‘Lost’: a little slice of heaven

The official title was “Something Nice Back Home,” and it made me wish, hopelessly, for a happy ending for Jack and Kate (and Aaron). Seeing that little window of sweet, normal family life — and a pretty great sex scene, plus an engagement ring — was so poignant, I could have cried. The episode did, as promised, show us how strong Jack on the island degenerated into weak Jack on booze and Valium. We also know, if we didn’t before, that at least some who didn’t leave the island stayed by choice, or so Jack said. I hope that applies to Jin, because I’m fighting the idea that he’s dead.

Of course, the episode also left questions hanging. Why isn’t Jack supposed to raise Aaron? (Claire was warned not to let her baby be “raised by another” — or was that “an other”? And why would that apply to Jack, her half-brother, especially if she’s, uh, gone?) What’s up with Dad Shephard roaming around? Hallucination, ghost or brought back to life by the island? Or was that a pre-dead Dad who teleports through time and space the way Ben could be doing? Is Hurley right that they’ve all been dead all along, and if so, why didn’t Charlie himself show up to deliver his messages? (I miss Charlie.) What’s the mysterious errand Kate is doing for Sawyer, and why as soon as she got engaged to Jack? I’m exhausted just pondering, and this was far from the most frustrating episode of the season.

I really felt like we learned quite a bit from this episode. I’m still upset about Kate choosing Jack (Skater 4ever!), but I have to admit, their little family looked so cozy. Maybe Jack isn’t supposed to raise Aaron since he is Claire’s half brother?

And what the heck happened to Claire??? Is she gone for good? I loved Sawyer being so protective of her.

As far as them being dead as Hurley said, that would really anger me. JJ and Carlton have said that is not it. Well, maybe they just said they aren’t in purgatory, but still. That would be a copout. I kind of thought maybe the funeral that Jack went to in last season’s finale was Hurley’s. And if that is so, maybe Jack is the next of the 6 we will see die? Perhaps that is it, if you leave the Island, you die? Well, now I’m just being silly and probably reading too much into it.

Oh, and I miss Charlie too! He looked so dang hot in the Hurley-centric episode! Yum!

BTW Gail, I love reading your columns. I am always saying to my husband “well Gail said…” And he just laughs at me. Keep up the excellent work!

I’m wondering how Jack’s chest hair became “Lost” in the future…They didn’t shave all that off for his appendectomy!

If anyone has the last episode recorded, could they go back to when Jack got out of bed and wrapped the towel around himself? Any scar from his appendectomy visible? From where he was shaved, I would expect some kind of scar around his waistline.

Normally I don’t watch for continuity errors unless they just reach out and grab you (like on “House” the other night - big one at the bowling alley scene!), but this one makes me want to go back and look.

I think they showed a scar at one time… I think he was in the kitchen. Not 100% positive, but I remember making a mental note of a scar on Jack’s stomach.

I do think it’s funny, though, how all of Jack’s chest hair magically disappeared. Hmm…
