‘Sex and the City’: movie review preview!

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

sjp2_opt.jpgI’m just back from seeing the “Sex and the City” movie at the first St. Louis screening; I’ll be reviewing it in Friday’s Post-Dispatch. First impressions — if you’re looking forward to seeing it, by all means see it. Super fans may even want to see it twice. There’s a lot to like here, expecially the first half (or third, maybe; the first segment), which is snappy, very funny and completely a return to the “S&TC” we loved. And the end: A lot of people in the audience (only about 160 seats) I saw it with liked the ending enough to applaud. I’ve heard of other audiences giving standing ovations.

HOWEVER. It is way too long at 2 hours and 20 minutes. And it seems even longer because the second half is meandering, sometimes draggy, and much more serious than the beginning, with some nice moments but a lot less fun and fewer high points. People who have been dragged along, or are at all lukewarm about the whole thing, will get fidgety here. A firmer hand in the editing booth could have made this a great movie. As it is, it’s just a good movie.

I agree with Gail. The first half is really good, but the second half is too long and drawn out. Editing would have helped. I also would have liked to see more of the guys, especially Big, Stanford and Harry. That said, it sure was nice to watch a new “SATC” instead of condensed reruns on TBS and Channel 11, though I’m not knocking those.

I was forced to set through this absolutely terrible movie by my girlfriend. It’s about 4 hookers or something like that. Not exactly a family movie. If I was dating any one of these sluts I probably would have dumped them quick.
Yeah, I smiled and grinded my teeth throughout this thing. What a waste of film.

I agree, the movie was rather boring to me. And Sarah Jessica kinda looked a mess to me. She has never been pretty but now she’s pretty ugly. The movie could have been condensed into 1hr and 45 minutes with most of the later parts excluded. All in all, it was ok but not worth the much anticipated wait

I saw it last night, the first part was great, but it did drag in the middle. I had no doubt about the ending so I wasn’t surprised or upset, though I noticed a lot of the women in the audience were. Also how did Jennifer Hudson win an Oscar? She. Was. Awful. Her charactor could have been completely cut out and it wouldn’t have made a difference at all to the movie.

Wake me up when the Sopranos movie comes out.

Why is SJP so sad in this movie? Someone should ask her, “why the long face?”

Giddyup, girl!

Unbelievable that this garbage is one of the headlines on St. Louis Today.

I really hope that picture is not from the movie, otherwise Gail did a great job of ruining it for me already.

WOW .. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I do want to say, in response to Matt Hower’s comment:

First off, if you cannot express yourself with proper English, then you have no right to bash this movie. Secondly, the four “hookers” you refer are strong, independent women who have helped re-shape social norms around what it means to be a woman in the 20th and 21st century. For 10 years, SATC’s themes have stood up to our politically correct society and have showed us that as women, we can, and should be, expressive sexual beings.
