‘Sex and the City’: movie review preview!

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

sjp2_opt.jpgI’m just back from seeing the “Sex and the City” movie at the first St. Louis screening; I’ll be reviewing it in Friday’s Post-Dispatch. First impressions — if you’re looking forward to seeing it, by all means see it. Super fans may even want to see it twice. There’s a lot to like here, expecially the first half (or third, maybe; the first segment), which is snappy, very funny and completely a return to the “S&TC” we loved. And the end: A lot of people in the audience (only about 160 seats) I saw it with liked the ending enough to applaud. I’ve heard of other audiences giving standing ovations.

HOWEVER. It is way too long at 2 hours and 20 minutes. And it seems even longer because the second half is meandering, sometimes draggy, and much more serious than the beginning, with some nice moments but a lot less fun and fewer high points. People who have been dragged along, or are at all lukewarm about the whole thing, will get fidgety here. A firmer hand in the editing booth could have made this a great movie. As it is, it’s just a good movie.

Matt–based on your comments, I am shocked that you let your girlfriend out of the house to see this…”hookers?” Really?

I don’t believe ANY of them charge men money to have sex with them…they all take care of themselves quite nicely.

I won’t argue the merits of the film (or even the show) because I think it is very over-rated in terms of quality–but your sexist and inaccurate comments are pretty sad because I am sure if the film was about four dudes banging chicks and partying like frat boys, you would have no issue with it.

Haven’t seen it, probably will eventually, but was disappointed and a little annoyed to see this article headlining stltoday. This movie is ridiculously overexposed. Is there NOTHING else going on in the world?

Maggie…I am not agreeing with Matt’s comments, but if these 4 women helped ‘re-shape social norms around what it means to be a woman in the 20th and 21st century’ then I guess they are to blame for Britney, Lindsey, Kim Kardashian et al. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt for women of all ages to have better role models than the tv characters from SATC. These are not strong women any more than the guys from Entouarge are male role models. If people stopped looking up to fictional characters and found real role models the world would be a better place.

I have to laugh, SATC is entertainment; correct? I do know believe these women are hookers or reshaped anything. I enjoyed the show and will go see the movie……but really stltoday.com, front page news?????

I just returned from seeing the SATC movie and it was fantastic! Ladies..the ending is all we dreamed of and more..And my more critical friends, we are not reviewing Hamlet here; sometimes we all just need a bit of fun, love and friendship. Not every movie has to be deep, dark and disturbing! We have life for that.
True fans will not be able to breath, it is that good. Think of an entire season of SATC in one movie - that is what you will get. SJP is brilliant. The writing, however was not as sharp as in the series and it did seem as if MPK was struggling with that..but in the end and especially at the end of the movie, we can forgive them..because it is a moment that the audience I was seated with, literally jumped to out of the seats and applauded..tears, and applause.
Carrie is truly the sum of her parts..and while it is not the men in the lives of the ladies that have to accept this fact, it is the ladies themselves that do..I have a full review on my site, just click the link and GO SEE THIS MOVIE..bring a box of tissue and your friends..

I have to agree with some of the comments on here that discourages the view that the women of SATC are role models for women. I absolutely adore their characters, but that is all that they are for me: fictional characters.

The movie was pretty predictable, and somewhat long. I am glad that I went to see it.

I just returned from the movie and my friends and I are extremely disappointed and we all loved the series!!! The movie lacked the heart and soul of the series and just droned on and on…………somethings are better left as they were………..the end of the series was perfect, but this movie was superficial and empty……..

this movie is the worst thing to happen to relationships in years. i’m prob one of 50 million guys that just had to deal with a “relationship status” argument. others out there, beware. and i love how today yahoo featured an article explaining why most men avoid marriage…and NO, women, it doesnt have to do with a “fear of committment” that you love to throw around.

Was I the only one or did anyone else see that in one scene, Cary’s mole went from the right side under her lip to the left side???
