‘Sex and the City’: movie review preview!
I’m just back from seeing the “Sex and the City” movie at the first St. Louis screening; I’ll be reviewing it in Friday’s Post-Dispatch. First impressions — if you’re looking forward to seeing it, by all means see it. Super fans may even want to see it twice. There’s a lot to like here, expecially the first half (or third, maybe; the first segment), which is snappy, very funny and completely a return to the “S&TC” we loved. And the end: A lot of people in the audience (only about 160 seats) I saw it with liked the ending enough to applaud. I’ve heard of other audiences giving standing ovations.
HOWEVER. It is way too long at 2 hours and 20 minutes. And it seems even longer because the second half is meandering, sometimes draggy, and much more serious than the beginning, with some nice moments but a lot less fun and fewer high points. People who have been dragged along, or are at all lukewarm about the whole thing, will get fidgety here. A firmer hand in the editing booth could have made this a great movie. As it is, it’s just a good movie.

I LOVE MR. BIG & CARRIE - ALL THESE YEARS!!!! But when I went to the movie I felt “jipped”, cause I wanted MORE TIME WITH MR. BIG and CARRIE TOGETHER ONE-ON-ONE AS A COUPLE, and their relationship. It was NOT enough (just a couple minutes in the beginning and a few minutes at the end). I did cry at her heartbreak. At first you feel mad at Mr. Big, but at the end I was actually mad at Carrie. Because she did not check her phone or emails and she was being “selfish” not to try and see what happened. I can understand feeling scorned and him being too stubborn to come inside to the wedding I know Mr. Big has big ego too. Will they make another movie????? (Yes, I know it is only entertainment and fictional)
I saw the movie last Friday and enjoyed the movie as a whole. I am not sure if I actually saw the finished movie. About 1 hour into the movie, almost every scene had the microphones in view. THIS WAS SO DISTRACTING and made the movie seem very cheap. I have not seen this discussed in any of the reviews and wonder if anyone else has seen this version????
The film premiered in the U.S. on May 30th. I saw the film on the evening of Thursday, May 29th…but at midnight (so techically the 30th). In other words, I saw the first released version. I also saw the film last night (June 7th) with a friend. It just occured to me I saw two slightly different versions.
Version 1: Uncut version (about 2 and a half hours)
Version 2: Cut version (can’t recall length, but parts were left out)
Loved it bc it was true to the tv show.
Pissed that it made me teary in a couple of places…
Funny thing though - watch Carrie’s pen in the scene by her closet - it disappears for one shot and then reappears (my girlfriend spotted it! funny!)
A+
