TCA press tour: Mad for ‘Mad Men’!
Day 2: TCA summer press tour
Los Angeles weather: 65 degrees and overcast.
Temperature in International Ballroom, Beverly Hilton: unusually comfy.
MTVĀ is presenting now, “The Gong Show” revival with Dave Attell, but a lot of people are still down the hall trying to get close to Jon Hamm of AMC’s “Mad Men.”
When I last saw him, our hometown boy was surrounded four deep by a mob with microphones. I didn’t want to interrupt the interviews, since I’ll be seeing him later at the “Mad Men” set visit, but I chatted with the show’s publicist, and she went on and on about what a great, humble guy he is. They (at AMC) are all on pins and needles about whether the show, and Jon, will get Emmy nominations, but I really think that’s a done deal.
I did talk after the formal Q&A with Matthew Weiner, theĀ creator, and asked him about Peggy’s “surprise baby,” a storyline even some of the show’s biggest fans found implausible. He told me he’d had that in mind from the beginning, but wanted to explore two issues. One: gaining weight at work, and the reaction from co-workers. And then: denial. The whole show is really about denial, he said, and compartmentalization. “Don compartmentalizes And Peggy compartmentalized this.”
Implausible? “No. This isn’t really that rare, even today. I knew someone it happened to” (giving birth without awareness of pregnancy). (I actually knew someone too, the daughter of a friend.) He said he had a file of surprise births, as reported in newspapers, and there are seven or eight a year.
Elisabeth Moss, who plays Peggy, said she wouldn’t miss wearing the prosthetics this season. “For the first few episodes,” Weiner teased her, getting a laugh.
Don’t look for developments involving the baby when the new season begins July 27. Weiner has tinkered with the time frame of the show but would rather not give anything away, so I’ll restrain myself for the moment.
Next up: David Alan Grier for “Chocolate News” on Comedy Central, followed by celebreality from CMT and TV Land and VH1. This afternoon: National Geographic and A&E.

I can’t wait for season 2. I’ve read that Weiner plans for five seasons spanning ten years of the characters’ lives. 1960-1970…very formative years for advertising and branding!
I love DAG!
I hadn’t heard about Chocolate News but will prep my DVR for this!
Mad Men - intelligent, entertaining television. I love this show.
Looking forward to more in season two, and really hope Matthew Weiner sticks to the plan for five seasons (garricks comment).
Jon Hamm went to high school with my nephew, in fact was in his wedding. Though I’ve never met him (missed the wedding), everything I hear reinforces the humble comments from the show’s publicist.
