‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ picks a St. Louis family
Earlier this year, the popular home-makeover show put out a call for local families that needed help but had also given help. Response was overwhelming. Now, one family has been chosen and will be notified, from a group of five finalists — all waiting on pins and needles — on Sept. 3. The news comes from the local construction and design (and PR?) firm chosen for the build. A website is already up; here is more info.
ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” Coming to St. Louis
Builders Callier Thompson Shea and Consolidated Construction Group call for building team and support volunteers
ST. LOUIS – Callier Thompson Shea Construction and Design LLC and Consolidated Construction Group Inc. today announced they will join ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” for an upcoming build in the greater St. Louis area.
The builders were selected to oversee and implement an aggressive one-week build that will change the life of a deserving St. Louis family. While the exact location of the project has not yet been disclosed, the builders look forward to taking on this incredible mission to give one of five families selected in the area a life-changing gift — a brand new home.
“A project of this magnitude and timeline is a challenge for any company,” said John Shea, president of Callier Thompson Shea Construction and Design, “and we are excited to partner with Consolidated Construction to lead this build. The citizens and corporations of St. Louis always rise to the occasion to help those in need, and we look forward to pulling the community together for this worthy cause.”
“Both companies have been blessed and believe strongly in giving back,” added Dave Dunlap of Consolidated Construction Group Inc. “We believe our project motto, ’People, Passion, Purpose,’ really exemplifies what this project is all about and encourages everyone to get involved. Every dollar, piece of material and hour donated to this project will make a difference.”
The building team is requesting volunteers to provide their time, support and resources to help ensure the success of this build. They have launched a dedicated website, ExtremeHomeMakeoverStLouis.com, containing information about volunteer opportunities, building materials and items needed for the project. Volunteer registration information also will be included, and interested individuals and companies are urged to visit the site to learn how they can help, show their support and register to volunteer.
In addition, Callier Thompson Shea Construction and Design and Consolidated Construction invite all volunteers and those who want to show their support for the project to a kick-off pep rally from 8 – 11 a.m., Aug. 26, 2008, at Manchester United Methodist Church, 129 Woods Mill Road, Manchester, MO 63011. This event will be hosted by Callier Thompson Shea Construction and Design, Consolidated Construction and producers and representatives from the Emmy award-winning television show. All those who are volunteering, donating time or materials, and those who want to support the build are invited to attend.

Nice, but I hope the family they pick is really really deserving and not some of the losers they have picked in the past. The ones who got their home done and then refinanced it and left it. Also, remember that the family that gets this done is responsible for the tax liability.
I wonder where these families’ homes are. Does the pep rally in Manchester serve as an indication? Not that there aren’t down-on-their-luck families in West County, but I would have an easier time justifying such grand assistance to families in St. Louis City, North County or even South County.
Im pretty sure the house is in Chesterfield somewhere, saw him out in CWE last night.
Does anyone know when they what time they will announce the family?
Believe it or not in this case the family is not stuck with a tax liability. There is a “loophole” in the IRS code. For example, if Hollywood is making a moving or tv show and they rent your house for 7 days or less you do not have to report the income to the IRS, these families fall under this category. This is why they make such a big deal out of completing the house in 7 days or less.
To Dave, If I recall the premise of the show was not a “deserving” family but just a family in need. You didn’t have to have your children’s leg’s chopped off or your husband in a serious car crash to have your house redone. You just needed to be someone who’s home was in need of help. It was also to make a person’s dream come true. Then the show became this dramatic “have to have serious problems” to get help. I liked it better when they just helped people for the sake of helping, not for the sake of drama. I agree that the family who refinanced and lost their home did a bad thing. It didn’t make them undeserving. They were deserving in the beginning, but became greedy in the end. I hope the familiy that gets picked here in STL just appreciates it and enjoys it. They are very lucky people to have that done.
kdunlap,
That is not the tax liability that is being refered.
Once they are done with the makeover the propery value is greatly increased. Thus more taxes. Lets just say the house that is torn down is worth 100K and the house and that is rebuild is now worth 500K. That means the property taxes go up 5 fold.
Thats a big jump!
