The Emmys: ‘Mad Men’ yes; Jon Hamm no
Jon Hamm (left) whispers to Elisabeth Moss as Matthew Weiner accepts the Emmy for “Mad Men.”

I was probably more disappointed than Jon Hamm that he didn’t win the Emmy. He managed to look genuinely happy when they announced Bryan Cranston for “Breaking Bad,” and my bet is that he wasn’t faking it. And you have to admit that Cranston — reinventing himself completely from “Malcolm in the Middle” — is great in “Breaking Bad,” a show that didn’t become the phenomenon “Mad Men” did.
The Emmys got it more right than usual in major categories, though — and the result is a triumph for my predictions. Never have I come anywhere close to going five for six, and that’s what I did this year. I assume there will be celebratory champagne on my desk when I get into the office on Monday.
As for the actual Emmy show: Whew, what a time-waster. I never thought they were going to get to the end. My absolute final first-edition deadline for the story that will run in the paper Monday was 10 p.m., and I didn’t think I was going to make it, but the show (despite Don Rickles and a reality-host extravaganza) sneaked in just under the three-hour mark.

Josh Groban doing the 30 songs was the highlight for me!
Re: Groban
Who knew you could sing the theme from Law & Order?
Gail,
I was hoping you would have another Emmy pick game. Even if no prizes, it would be fun to see what/who other St Louisans thought would win. Next year?
Dom Perignon?
The Emmy show was almost completely unwatchable. If that is the best the TV industry can put together, that is embarrassing! To quote a saying my mother uses frequently, “I wrote better skits for the Cub Scout shows!”
I taped the Emmys to shuffle through to the highlights tonight (even though I already saw the winners in Gail’s column). I was so thrilled to see that Jeff Probst won the first Reality Show Host Emmy!! I don’t understand how The Amazing Race always wins for Best Reality Show and the host, Phil Keoghan wasn’t even included in the Reality Show Host nominees.
The Emmy’s this year were sooooooo BORING I almost gave up and watched something else. I wasnted to see the fashions though. That is the only reason that I stayed with it.
Leave it to Ricky Gervais to add some actual comedy to the show! His bit with Steve Carell was hilarious (”at least I watched all of “Evan Almighty”!).
Mostly, though, the show sucked big time. And you worried about the hour you lost watching Brad Garrett’s show…
At least “Heroes” begins again tonight. That’s “must watch” tv for many of us.
