Snoopy in the Macy's parade

Snoopy in the Macy's parade.

Specials, movies, marathons — just add gravy. I’ve omitted sports from this calendar, because people who want to watch football or basketball on Thanksgiving know where to find it. Think of this as a survival guide for everyone else. One disappointment: Although I find airings of the inferior 1973  “Miracle on 34th Street’ (1 p.m. on Fox Movie Channel) and the somewhat more charming 1994 version (7 p.m. on ABC Family), the original — set on Thanksgiving, for heaven’s sake — is nowhere to be found today.

SPECIALS

‘America’s Thanksgiving Parade’
8 a.m. on CBS
The parade airs from Detroit. Over at ABC, “Good Morning America’ (7-9 a.m.) will incorporate part of Philadelphia’s parade.

St. Louis Thanksgiving parade

Thanks, Santa (if that’s your real name). Even KMOV didn’t know listings were wrong on this til you left the news in our stocking.

‘Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade’
9 a.m. on NBC
Matt Lauer, Al Roker and Meredith Vieira are hosts of the 83rd Macy’s parade from Manhattan, including performancs by Andra Bocelli, Gloria Gaynor and Carly Simon — but not the kids from “Glee,” who were invited by parade organizers but nixed by NBC.

‘National Dog Show’
Noon-2 p.m. on NBC
Viewers get their first chance to vote (at NBC.com) for a fan-favorite Best in Show during this year’s competition, taped in Philadelphia and presented by Purina. John O’Hurley and David Frei return as commentators.

‘NBC’s People of the Year’
8 p.m. on NBC
NBC “takes a look at the most fascinating, inspirational, heroic and notorious figures” of 2009. Included: Taylor Swift, Nadya Suleman, Susan Boyle, Kobe Bryant and Capt. Chelsey Sullenberger. Matt Lauer is host.

Am I the only person who thinks that the Macy’s parade has become less of a parade and too much of a promotion for Broadway shows? Don’t get me wrong. I love musicals, but there’s really not much of a parade aspect to it any more. And I agree that the original version of “Miracle on 34th St” should be on on Thanksgiving Day. The Fred and Ginger marathon sounds great, though — and it’s on the one non-premium channel where a viewer can truly enjoy movies. No ads, no constant pop-ups (doesn’t anyone at these cable networks realize how annoying that is?), and you can actually read the credits at the end and savor the ending before moving on to the next program. Yey, TCM!

I’m just grateful we get the whole uninterrupted Macy’s parade without the break for the live parade downtown on Channel 5. Dear heavens, don’t make me watch the big Schnucks shopping cart, Soldan HS band, and some poor schmuck with a big balloon that is all of 8 feet off the ground! If I want to suffer through that, I’ll head downtown.

Gail,

You are naughty, what about the St. Louis Parade which will actually air on CBS (KMOV). You better correct and get the word out or you will be staying on naughty list. That mean’s no Elmo for you!

I agree that TCM is the best place for movies. I expect they will show the classic “Miracle on 34th street” soon.
Or course, it’s not expensive on DVD so I’m not too worried.

I like the Broadway shows preview at the opening so it works for me, however, I wish you hadn’t reminded me about the giant Schnucks cart because now I’ll avoid the local parade like the plague.

I completely am disappointed the 1947 Miracle on 34th Street was not on. That is a Thanksgiving tradition and the other versions and attempts to remake fail in my book. Seeing history in that movie is much appreciated and much desired during our Thanksgiving holiday. Hopefully someone will wake up as I turned off all other versions of that movie.
