‘V’: your verdict?
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
ABC’s new spin on the ’80s miniseries “V” made its debut Tuesday night, and I like it even though I’m not a huge science fiction fan. The opening was riveting, I thought, and I’m interested to see how the characters deal with the arrival of the alien visitors who promise such great things. (Here’s my full review from Sunday.) Did you watch? Will you watch again?

My take on V: As a new idea, it would be fantastic. As a retread… it’s merely interesting, and I don’t see it lasting beyond the four hour November set.
It’s generally well-made, and the details of the production — the camera angles, the sets, etc. — were interesting and placed it as a decidedly modern creation. It’s hard not to see parallels to our modern political culture.
That said, the big “shock” of the original miniseries is missing. There’s no gee-whiz big reveal that they’re basically big lizards in human skin. Notice that there were no rats in the bunker? That made me laugh out loud, because every other suspenseful show would have that canned squeak-squeak in the halls.
It was definitely worth sticking with for a few episodes to see where it goes. I couldn’t help shaking the feeling that I could predict everything that happened before it happened — and I hadn’t watched the original V series. I thought Anna’s manipulation of the TV journalist (can’t remember his name) was lazy writing. Maybe his lack of integrity will be an important later on; they just didn’t telegraph that at all.
I thought it was pretty decent so far. I did like how they gave a nod to my great movie, “Independence Day”, and also subtly dinged how it was just like “early 80s alien invasion movies”.
We watched. Not sure yet. Story line is good and it could go on for years. Acting was a little poor. Dialog could stand some improvement.
I started out watching, then sort of watched, then didn’t much care. It’s nowhere as good as “FlashForward” which to me has a really unique premise and which just keeps getting better and better in how layered it is and how the relationships keep getting more and more complicated. Every week there’s something new that adds another twist — which is how it should be. I don’t usually watch sci fi type stuff, but I am really hooked on “Flash Forward”. As for “V” — not so much. I should have known — I rarely agree with Gail and am sort of proud of that.
I usually agree with Gail (I hope she caught Monday night’s “Heroes”!) but I have to agree with KiKi and Rich on this one.
It started out well but too predictable. Maybe that’s because I watched the originals. When people remember the reference to “Independence Day” and other early sci-fi movies and not the name of a main character, you’ve lost them.
Even Elizabeth Mitchell might not be enough to carry me through this series.
I enjoyed the show and it held my interest for the whole hour. I plan on tuning in every week to watch!
I actually liked it, while it’s a re-telling i think they added their own spin and perhaps changed the story itself as in telling people (in the show, not us) about the visitors. I’ll keep watching because i actually liked the story they are giving us. It’s not flashforward, but then again FW to be is lost with a twist. So, yeah…
I felt it was rushed and lacked that big AHA! moment. (Of course I missed the last 10 minutes because our stupid 4th rate mid-MO station lost its signal!) The characters, too, just didn’t really grab me. I’ll probably give it one more chance but that’s it. As cheesy as the original was, I liked it better than this week’s ep.
I’ll wait for the DVD if it gets good buzz. I’ll let other viewers waste their time deciding if this is worth watching or not.
