ABC loads schedule with eight new shows
Courteney Cox, Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton will headline ABC’s fall schedule, along with new spins on the 1980s miniseries “V” and the novel and movie “The Witches of Eastwick.”
ABC announced eight new series for fall and midseason in advance of a presentation to advertisers this afternoon in New York. “Scrubs” lives, along with “Castle” and “Better Off Ted.” But “Samantha Who?” was canceled, along with the previously reported “The Unusuals” and “Cupid.”
ABC’s Wednesday will be entirely new. On Thursdays, “Flash Forward,” promoted with flashes during “Lost,” takes over the 7 p.m. slot, bumping the faltering “Ugly Betty” to Friday nights after “Supernanny.”
New fall and midseason series include “Cougar Town,” “The Deep End,” “Eastwick,” “Flash Forward,” “The Forgotten,” “Hank,” “Happy Town,” “The Middle,” “Modern Family,” “Shark Tank” and “V.”
Here are descriptions of ABC’s new series:
DRAMA
“The Deep End” — St. Louis native Norbert Leo Butz is one of the lawyers in a drama about first-year associates in a prestigious Los Angeles law firm.
“Eastwick” — Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price, Sara Rue and Veronica Cartwright headline a new spin on “The Witches of Eastwick.”
“Flash Forward” — A mysterious event causes the entire world to black out, giving a glimpse into the near future, in the series promoted during flashes in “Lost.” David S. Goyer (”The Dark Knight”) and Brannon Braga (”Star Trek: Enterprise”) adapt Robert J. Sawyer’s novel, with stars including Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Courtney B. Vance and Peyton List.
“The Forgotten” — Amateurs work cases involving unidentfied victims in a crime drama from Jerry Bruckheimer. Stars include Reiko Aylesworth.
“Happy Town” — Years after unsolved kidnappings, crime strikes a small Minnesota town again.
“V” — The 1980s miniseries about an alien race is revisited, with Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet on “Lost”), Scott Wolf (”Party of Five”) Morris Chestnut and Lourdes Benedicto.
COMEDY
“Cougar Town” — Courteney Cox stars as a recently divorced single mother and is also executive producer (with husband David Arquette); Bill Lawrence (”Scrubs”) wrote and directed. Christa Miller (Lawrence’s wife), Busy Phillips, Dan Byrd, Josh Hopkins and Ian Gomez also star.
“Hank” — Kelsey Grammer plays a businessman who finds himself out of work and almost broke, with a wife (Mmelinda McGraw) and kids he hardly knows.
“The Middle” — Patricia Heaton is a wife and mother of three in a comedy about “raising a family and lowering your expectations.” Neil Flynn (Janitor on “Scrubs”) plays her husband.
“Modern Family” — “Shot from the perspective of an unseen documentary filmmaker, this comedy takes a modern look at the complications that come with being a family in 2009.” Ed O’Neill, Sofie Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Julie Bowen star.
UNSCRIPTED
“Shark Tank” — Mark Burnett gives budding entrepreneurs the chance to make their dreams come true.
“Shark Tank” will premiere over the summer following the special 10th anniversary primetime return of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire,” and will then move to Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. Shows picked up but not listed on the schedule will debut later in the 2009-10 season.

scrubs “lives” but who is left in the cast? who is returning? if anyone? i really like how ABC righted the ship after the later seasons on NBC lost focus, but the current cast of underlings are not interesting enough to hold the spotlight on their own…
Yawn, not much to get excited about.
I’m glad “Better Off Ted” is returning. Every time I catch an episode, I end up laughing out loud more than once. I’ve been a huge fan of “Scrubs” since day one, but really. It’s time to let it go before it’s just pathetic.
So, when “Lost” returns in January, “Eastwick” goes on hiatus? Or will reshuffling happen when some shows get canceled? Elizabeth Mitchell is on “Lost”, but also on new show “V”? Or have they officially killed her off on “Lost”?
I’m Lost.
Too bad they cancelled Samantha Who… I thought Christina Applegate was pretty darn funny!
Castle has been a fun insert into this year’s schedule. Glad to see it will continue next year.
Looking forward to the V-reboot, but wish they were going to visit some of the original characters.
For Scrubs - it has been reported that Zach Braff will return for 6 episodes in the 9th season. I believe Donald Faison has said he would return for the 9th season if it was renewed. But with Neil Flynn and Christa Miller both taking spots on other series, you might see fewer scenes with the “extras”.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the show focused on Elliot and Turk. It really seemed to be set up in season 8.
I agree with Beth with my disappointment that “Samantha Who?” was not renewed. I thought the writing on the show, and Christina Applegate as the lead character, were superb. I hate it when networks put shows like this on long hiatuses, then bring them back on a difficult timeslot where they have little chance of survival. What a shame.
