Billy Mays

A marathon of the Discovery Channel series “Pitchmen,” which began at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, July 1) and continues through the series finale at 9 p.m., has been dedicated to iconic pitchman Billy Mays. Mays, who starred in the series about TV’s infomercial kings, died Sunday at 50. Earlier this week, some of Mays’ ads, including those for OxiClean, were still airing.

I found that honoring a huckster that pawn a bunch of over-hyped junk kind of repulsive. They even had the 911 calls when the ambulance was called for him. What a bunch of huey!!!

Frankly, I’m very happy to know that I won’t be hearing any new commercials with this guy barking at me to buy the latest miracle cleaner or gizmo I can’t live without.

Steve - get off the meth before you post.

Skippy - The fact that you think the death of Billy Mays means the end of bombastic pitchmen suggests to me that you should avoid sharp objects and fire.

Seriously, were either of your posts in any way necessary?

Sorry, Incredulous, but I have to agree with Steve and Skippy. Sad he died, but people die every day. “Honoring a tv pitchman?” More like ratings and money.

Are you sure it’s a series finale? Discovery’s web site still says season finale. I realize that there’s a good chance that his passing will mark the end of the show, but I’m curious if you’ve been told that definitively or if Discovery is still considering whether they’ll continue with Anthony alone or with someone else. I thought it was a cool show.

I knew Billy personally and he was a genuinely nice, friendly guy. Remembered every face and name, even if he didn’t end up doing business with you. A very real person. Be thankful salesmen like him exist; there’s a good chance your livelihood depends on somebody with Billy’s talent - like it or not. I know too many back room tools who bellyache about the loud, “obnoxious” salesmen in their companies - Get over it, those guys pay your bills.
