St. Louis remains Nielsen’s 21st largest TV market
We’re No. 21!
With 1,249,450 TV homes, St. Louis is holding on as the 21st largest television market in the country, the Nielsen Company estimates. The ranking was unchanged despite a loss of 370 TV homes from last year. Kansas City, with 941,360 TV homes, fell to No. 32 from 31 — despite a gain of 3,390 TV homes. Nielsen’s “designated market areas” (DMAs) encompass a city and the surrounding area that can receive the city’s television signals. Kansas City was leapfrogged by fast-growing Salt Lake City, which moved up two spots.
Just above St. Louis are the Orlando, Fla., metro area, at 19, and the Sacramento, Calif., area, at 20. Portland, Ore., is 22nd, with Pittsburgh at 23.
The Top 10 are unchanged in the new market ranking: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas-Ft. Worth, San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, Boston, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and Houston. Like Salt Lake City, Denver moved up two spots (from 18 to 16). Columbus, Ohio, fell two spots, to 34 from 32. Nielsen says:
“For the 2009-2010 broadcast season Nielsen estimates that the total number of television households within the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii) will be 114.9 million. This is an increase of 400,000 homes from last year and the smallest increase in the last 10 years. Nielsen also estimates that the number of Persons age 2 and above (P2+) in U.S. television households will increase slightly to 292 million.”

What about a ranking on books purchased per household?
This isn’t a comment on how much tv we watch, it’s a comment on population, and as long as we stay out of the top 20, we will remain an afterthought in the national media.
TV is for people who can’t read.
i wish we were last because it would mean all of us were spending less time in front of the idiot box……..i never replaced the analogue antennae with a digital one, and i have to tell you i don’t miss television one bit……..good riddance to bad news…..
Well, thank heavens you people saved enough time by not watching TV to read and comment on a blog ABOUT TV. We also have a Book Blog (www.stltoday.com/bookblog), you know.
Question 1 - how does a city move UP two spots to 18 from 16? Also, with 400,000 more households, sounds like illegal immigration is alive and well.
Good point Gail. I’m not sure why all the people who are so down on TV spend their day on the internet. It’s not much different. I guess they couldn’t feel self important if they didn’t let us know how they felt.
All this study shows is how many housholds have tv’s. It’s more indicative of St. Louis as the 21st biggest city in the country. Nothing to do with how much television St. Louisans watch
postcard, sorry to disappoint you, but its not a function of “self important”…..i have over $20,000+ more in my pocket since 1997 by not having cable/internet at the house, some great hobbies, and a clear mind.
