The rehab project staged in June at Windsor Transitional House, a home for veterans in St. Louis, will be unveiled in the HGTV special “Change the World: American Heroes,” a Veteran’s Day special airing at 7 p.m. Wednesday on HGTV. Carpenter Carter Oosterhaus is host, joined by designer Monica Pederson and local volunteers. HGTV explains:

Veteran Hence Forland started the Windsor Transitional Home when he noticed veterans from the local community center living in an abandoned building near his home. He offered the homeless veterans a place to stay, despite the lack of electricity on the home’s first floor, no ceiling in several rooms and no running water in the kitchen. After Carter and the volunteers identified the areas for repair, the renovations to the 104-year old home began. New floors, ceilings and energy-efficient windows were added to reduce energy consumption, while the new ceiling fans help circulate the air and keep the temperature comfortable. For this home, Monica created a design plan that included soft, neutral hues to create a soothing feel and also included plenty of seating to encourage socializing. In addition, the residents received a surprise gift from St. Louis Rams football player Will Witherspoon.

Windsor Transitional Home, which is on Windsor Place in Midtown, near the Cochran Veterans Hospital, won the makeover in an HGTV competition. ReBuilding Together St. Louis led the effort, joined by Mosby Building Arts and a huge group of local volunteers.

“The HGTV people were genuinely impressed with St. Louis,” says Toby Weiss of Mosby. “They said they had never had so many volunteers show up, never saw so many donations, and were overwhelmed by the spirit of giving and hard work.

Everyone is invited to  a free viewing party Wednesday night at the Moolah Theatre, 3821 Lindell. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the special shown on the big screen beginning at 7. Info: 314-918-9918.
