Neal E. Boyd: secrets of the ‘America’s Got Talent’ finalist

The $1 million question is: Will Neal E. Boyd win “America’s Got Talent”?

But while we wait for the finale tonight (8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, on NBC), here are some things you might not know about Neal,  based on a long and enjoyable phone conversation Monday. You can also click on this link to read my front-page story about Neal that ran today.

His uncle is former Boston Red Sox pitcher Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd. Neal and his brother, Michael, both wanted to play baseball, but Neal says: “I could pitch and I could hit. But if I didn’t hit a home run, I was out. I was slow getting down to first.”

Neal sang a lot of karaoke in St. Louis at spots like Syberg’s. He also did comedy at the Funnybone.

The backward gray cap is something he owned for years before starting to wear it. Now it’s his signature.

He sang at Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan’s funeral and was recognized and rushed on stage by Billy Bush of “Access Hollywood” to sing for California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger at a Hollywood event the other day.

Neal is a supervisor for Aflack in Valley Park, and the company has been supportive of the competition, even flying his brother and family out for a show. Also, Neal says, “I know the duck really well.”

Everywhere he goes, people want to hug him. “Sharon (Osbourne) hugs me every time she sees me.”

Many of the “Talent” contenders have become close friends during the show’s run. The Wright Kids (who will join the rest of the Top 10 in a medley tonight) love to imitate Neal.

We’ll be watching the final tonight. We usually skip watching after the initial tryouts, since we think the show runs way too long getting to the finals.

The only guy I hope doesn’t win is the guy with the spray-on tan, Donald Braswell. If any of the other four win, I’ll be happy. Of course, I’m always pulling for the local guy, Neal. I’m glad they didn’t stretch the finale show to 2 hours. As it is, I’ll be TiVOing it tonight. Too many commercials.

Congratulations Neal!! I have backed you from performance #1. You have a beautiful gift in your voice, your hugable personality & your humility. The combination of these is palpable through the TV when you sing. You are the new Pavarotti, and I look forward to owning your first CD & DVD. Until then I am saving pre-recorded performances on my computer, but I so long to hear you sing for an hour!! God Bless You and your career!

The two best things about Neal E. Boyd winning America’s Got Talent are not his obvious singing ability, but 1) the fact that he is a genuinely great guy and nice human being and that 2) he can serve as an example to both our teachers and young people. My cousin has been lucky enough to have been dating him for a few years and from the first moment I met him (before all the AGT brouhaha) you could tell he was a great person. He embraced my family and amused and charmed my four daughters. But there is something more to Neal, as a teacher I have shared with my students pieces of Neal’s story that go beyond the overnight sensation aspect. Neal’s hero is a teacher. Growing up a poor, big, mixed race kid yet having within himself a potential that no one, even he, could have imagined. Yet a high school chorus teacher heard him fooling around “pretending” to sing opera and saw in this kid a real talent. And today that teacher’s vision and faith has paid off. To all of the teachers out there who every day encourage our students to keep on trying, to do everything it takes and who look for, and see, the potential in all of those kids that other people don’t even see remember Neal E. Boyd. He is just one more example that it IS all worth while, It truly can work out. Congratulations Neal!
