‘The Lou’: Love it or hate it?

Steve Parker’s post today in the Editors’ Desk blog reignited a heated debate over whether it’s cool to refer to St. Louis as “the Lou.” Personally, we’re OK with it. Lots of people aren’t, though.

So now’s your chance to weigh in on a completely unscientific poll.

And while you’re voting, enjoy this video of Nelly’s “Country Grammar,” where he pays homage to the Lou at the 0:44 mark.

Is it OK to call St. Louis “the Lou”?

Anyone who’s actually *from* St. Louis would never refer to it as “the Lou”

I’ve been to the Lou once, and I’ve even used a loo in the Lou once. Who’s who to call it the Lou, it doesn’t matter to me, does it matter to you? Go Lou, you knew how we do.

My favorite view of the St. Louis area is always the one in my rear view mirror.

If the local paper is stupid enough and arrogant enough to use the nickname “the Lou” to refer to the city, it certainly has every right….

For the life of me, I do not understand why they cannot use “St. Lou”. Same number of letters, same number of syllables….

Do a news search for “the loo”. Twenty or thirty hits daily, every time I bother to look - most of the world thinks of the loo as the toilet. To me, that is not a pretty moniker for the home city…

To argue that Nelly used the word once in a song, so it is cool, is certainly a twisted argument. But do a search on his lyrics - he uses St. Lou many, many more times - doesn’t that make it even cooler?…

In the end, the Post can do what it wants. It is just another of the arrogant media that just cannot understand the huge loss in their subscriber base.

The lou was some ad stuff that they are still trying to push,
some ad firm thought it would catch and all the residents would
go around and tell people we were from toilet city???

Toilet references aside, “The Lou” just plain sounds ridiculous if you ask me. Might I add that your poll choices are somewhat lacking? I was looking for the “No - because it sounds silly” option.
