After the Post-Dispatch wrote a story about the difficulty of collecting from drivers caught by cameras in traffic-light violations, I thought it would be interesting to see how many people blogged about it. Turns out, there were several. People just love the law-and-order stories, don’t they?
And many of them picked up on the quote in Jake Wagman’s story by St. Louis Alderman Freeman Bosley about the tickets: “If you threw it in the trash, nothing would happen.”
Writes the Saint Louis Conservative, “Now that the Post-Dispatch has picked up on it and basically told everyone in town to ignore the tickets without consequence maybe the trend will shift away from these cameras but I doubt it. They’re too big of a moneymaker for municipalities and too many gullible folks are paying their tickets without a fight.”
Miss Behavin’ describes her blog as a place to “point out all the incredibly stupid federal and state legislation that invades my privacy and restricts my rights.” She reveled in the Bosley quote, but noted, “BEWARE: Other cities are resolving ’shortcomings’ in the plan by creating yet more stupid laws to penalize not responding to the ticket. Apparently the government still doesn’t understand that ‘two wrongs don’t make a right.’”
Well before the P-D story on Sunday, BrianJarrett.com posted about his own experience with a red-light camera in St. Louis, “That one cost me $100 and I didn’t even run the light. I turned right on red without coming to a complete stop. I said then that I thought it was a scam and from what I’ve been reading it seems I was right.”
He links to a report on LeftLaneNews.com that says some cities have been caught tampering with the length of yellow lights in order to catch drivers going through lights.
“As more people have figured out that the tickets are easily ignored, cities have become more aggressive (and arguably unethical) in their quest to extract money from motorists,” writes the blog of the National Motorists Association, quoting from the version of the story that ran in the Columbia Missourian.
Got your own blog item that I missed? Let me know about it here, please, and I’ll be sure to add it.
And for your reading pleasure, here’s the red-light camera map we ran with the story on Sunday.
