The List

This year is shaping up to be a pretty good year for sin.

At least, that's what the research firm IBISWorld concludes in a recent report tracking industries that it has assigned to each of the seven deadly sins.

With more disposable income at our fingertips -- and with the help of new technologies -- IBISWorld said Americans will find more ways to indulge themselves in 2012. Apparently, this will be a bountiful year for envy, lust and sloth. Yippee! But it will be a bit slower growth year for those who peddle in pride and greed. Boo!

The firm does takes liberties with its labels. For example, I'm sure there are plenty of gun manufacturers out there who would object to being placed into the "wrath" category. But nonetheless, it makes for some colorful reading.

So without further ado, let's get to the list:

  • Envy: Jewelry store sales are projected to grow 4.5 percent this year. "Although consumers withheld extra sparkly spending in the wake of the Great Recession as status symbols took a backseat to paying bills, they are now making their friends green with envy," the report says.
  • Lust: Online dating sales are expected to grow 3.5 percent this year. Instant messaging, photo sharing, and smartphone applications have helped boost demand and growth of this industry.
  • Sloth: The "do-it-for-me" market made of up maids, nannies, personal chefs, gardeners, and butlers is expected to grow 3.4 percent this year. So much for DIY ("do it yourself").
  • Gluttony: Fast-food restaurants are expected to grow 2.6 percent this year as chains add new, convenient locations. And with more Americans finding jobs, they'll have less free time and so will gravitate more to this quick option, IBISWorld says.
  • Wrath: Gun and ammunition manufacturers are expected to grow 2.3 percent. Domestic manufacturers have apparently not been able keep up with the demand for Americans' love of firearms. So imports, especially from the United Kingdom and Germany, have been up in the last five years, the report says.
  • Pride: Tanning salons are expected to grow 2 percent this year. The tanning tax is expected to boost promotion of sunless tanning booths and airbrushing.
  • Greed: Commercial banking is expected to be up 1.9 percent this year.

As for how this list compares to more "virtuous" industries, I have no idea. But I'm guessing that list would not be as much fun.
