What are "Laws of Life" Essays?
spacer
"Laws of Life" are universal ideals expressed in aphorisms, familiar sayings and wise quotations. CHARACTERplus and STLtoday.com invite middle and high school students to capture, in their own words, the ideals they choose to live by and why. Ideals like:

You are only as good as your word.
You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
Let peace begin with me.
To have a friend, be one.
Never give up, never give up, never give up.

Based on the international Laws of Life Essay guidelines, this initiative focuses on reflection, the writing process, and the moral leadership of students by:
spacer
publishing quality essays about the laws of life that guide the authors' life choices and actions
spacer
providing a way to search for essays by title, name, school, topic and tone
spacer
encouraging teachers/advisors to register and submit qualifying essays
spacer
allowing the flexibility for individual students, classes, grade levels or entire schools to participate.

Students from several St. Louis area schools have participated in the Laws of Life writing process in recent years. They are founding contributors as we launch this site and open it to all public and private secondary schools in the metropolitan region. Your school's name will be added to the "search by school" list when a teacher/advisor registers as a Laws of Life Coordinator.

LAWS OF LIFE ESSAY CONTEST
Laws of Life
The international Laws of Life Essay Contest, founded by Sir John Templeton in 1987, has been generous in its support of this project and our use of their writing tips. They also offer excellent guidelines to a contest. This is a community-school partnership opportunity you might want to explore, but a contest is not required for submission of essays to this site.

I believe that each and every one of us can identify the set of principles we want to live by if we reflect on the events we have passed through, the people we have known, and the lessons we have learned. By discovering and practicing these values, we have the power to transform our lives into more deeply useful and joyful experiences.
