Beth: Dear Tom,
We are planning a summer vacation around a conference that will take place in Boston. We plan to fly into the area one week before the conference and spend some time in New England. Now, we're looking for the best options. We're both history buffs, and we'd also like something very relaxing with sitting on the beach or porches and reading to the sound of the ocean. Romantic would be nice too! On our list that we're considering: driving to Portland ME with stops along the way, visiting Lexington/Concord, beaches around Providence or Newport. What might you suggest?
Tom Uhlenbrock: Hi Beth. Marblehead, Manchester-by-the Sea and Gloucester are classic sea towns on the Atlantic. But, since you're history buffs, don't be so anxious to get out of Boston proper. Next to Philadelphia, Boston has more history than any other American city. You should visit Faneuil Hall, the Boston Massacre Site, Bunker Hill Monument, the USS Constitution Museum and follow the Freedom Trail up Adams Street to Monument Square. If you're a baseball fan, Fenway Park is a must. Cheers Beacon Hill also is a favorite with tourists. And I rate the New England Aquarium on Central Wharf as one of the top aquariums in the U.S. You might check out a Multi-Attraction Pass that includes admissions to more than 70 attractions (gobostoncard.com). Other helpful sites are searchboston.com and celebrateboston.com. With gas prices what they are, I'd just as soon spend my time walking around these historical haunts as in a car, although I've never done Lexington/Concord and hear it's a fabulous area. Have fun.
