Dan Galvin of Gateway Constructors and Linda Wilson of MoDOT will field questions about Highway 40 reconstruction.

Philip K: First, thank you for answering questions here. I have found it very useful and informative.
You have said elsewhere in these postings that the main line of the new interstate will be concrete instead of asphalt. I have noticed that between the old concrete construction at Ballas and the new concrete construction at Spoede there is a section of the main line that is asphalt. Why is this?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: The contract with Gateway Constructors stopped just west of Spoede Road. That is where you see the new concrete pavement stop. MoDOT had an older stretch of pavement between this point and Ballas Road. With our limited funding, we did a separate resurfacing contract to repave this section so that our pavement conditions on I-64 would be good from I-270 all the way in to I-170.

Dan Ruzicka: Have the traffic lights on the alternate routes from the first section of the 64 closure been re-timed now that traffic has changed again? Specifically, Lindbergh backs up more than it should at Ladue during the evening commute. It seems that this is because the light gives more time to Ladue traffic, even though there are significantly fewer cars on Ladue with 64 open. Clayton at Lindbergh is fine...likely because it was re-timed to match the new light at the interstate.

My guess is that there are other intersections similar to this in central-west county. (Warson and Olive for example seems to be hit and miss in terms of back-ups)
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: The traffic lights on the alternate routes west of I-170 have been retimed and continue to be monitored and adjusted since we opened the west half of I-64. This week we are just now seeing more normal traffic patterns after the holidays and the return to work and school. Our traffic engineers will continue to watch these. I will share your concerns about the evening timing at Ladue and Lindbergh so the engineers can look at that specifically.

gregl: I know this is a City question, but I wonder if you have the latest scoop. Any idea on when the Southbound Jefferson viaduct will be opening?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: The last I heard it would be another couple of weeks. So hopefully before the end of the month.

Kevin: The newly opened stretch of 40 seems very dark. Are there plans to add any more lighting to the highway?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: We do not have any plans for more lighting. The old highway was lit at the interchanges and so is the new highway. We do not provide continuous lighting on the interstates. The lighting is focused on the exit and entrance ramps and then large overhead lighting in the major interstate-to-interstate interchanges. The only place we have continuous lighting on the interstates is within the limits of the City of St. Louis, at their request and expense.

Another difference about I-64 compared to other interstates is that it is very residential. Without the commercial development lighting, it makes it darker.

Gil Estuary: Why is Boland closed at McCausland?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: I cannot find on the map where Boland crosses McCausland. Do you mean another location?
