Dan Galvin of Gateway Constructors and Linda Wilson of MoDOT will field questions about Highway 40 reconstruction for an hour each Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Ryan: I'm not sure whether this is a MoDOT or a County issue, but even though Richmond Heights has made all of the neighborhood streets around Big Bend 2-way once again, the arrow to turn left from Clayton to Boland has not been activated. Can you guys look into this?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: This is a County issue. I will ask them to look into it.

Joe: Why or why wasn't consideration given to adding bike/jogging lanes to accomodate bicyclists or other alternatives to auto traffic along the new I-64 corridor? Is it possible in future MoDot projects? Missouri seems to be years behind other states in this area.
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: Missouri does not put bike lanes on interstates because it is not allowed by the federal government. Interstates have a minimum speed limit and therefore bikes are not allowed. This section of I-64 is signed for 60 mph with a minimum speed of 45 mph.
The state property along I-64 is too narrow to have extra space for a separate bike/ped path away from the pavement. Typically our interstates don't have extra room for this and the high speed of interstate traffic is not an environment safe for cyclists or pedestrians to be close to. We are providing sidewalks at the interchanges and on the cross street bridges along I-64. We also worked with Forest Park to improve the shared path in the park. We built a new pedestrian underpass under Hampton at the north end of the I-64 interchange and also a new underpass under I-64 just east of the Science Center to replace an old tunnel just west of the Science Center.

cats: Last year around December, the Post-Dispatch ran a story about the County redoing Hanley & Manchester into a Michigan Left turn intersection. Do you know if this plan still in the works?
Also, you need to adjust the timing of the electric signal for NB drivers on Brentwood Blvd. wanting to go WB on I-64. Why do we have to wait over 1 minute at 6:15am (on a weekend) when no cars can be seen coming all the way to Clayton Rd.?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: The County's project is in the design stage right now. They are planning for construction in approximately 2012.
I will have the traffic engineer check the signal on Brentwood on weekend mornings. Typically, our signals are on cycle starting at about 6 a.m. every day. The signals are linked together with all the signals along a road, so they work together. A typical signal cycle is 2 minutes, so it is not uncommon to wait a minute or two for the signal to recognize that a car has pulled up to turn left and cycled around to give you a green.

Kurtis Jr: Hi folks,
Why was it necessary to resurface Kingshighway? The bridge was built just two years ago, and yet the entire bridge is being resurfaced.
Thanks.
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: The pavement we're replacing at Kingshighway was temporary and was always intended to be replaced. At the time we finsihed the second half of the bridge the temperatures weren't right for the type of asphalt we're using so we postponed the final paving operations. They ended up being postponed a couple more times as other priorities came up, such as the Hanley Road bridge, and now we're getting it done. We'll move that operation to Eager Road next. Starting tomorrow night we'll mill off the surface of Eager between Brentwood and Hanley and then repave it next week.

dweebe: How is the construction of the Big Bend overpass coming along?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: It's going well. We are scheduled to begin paving the bridge deck Friday. The completion date is December 1 at the latest.
