Dan Galvin of Gateway Constructors and Linda Wilson of MoDOT will field questions about Highway 40 reconstruction for an hour each Wednesday at 2 p.m.

RNC: Dan, quick follow up to my question from last week re. the exit signage at Hampton. As far as I can tell, there is only one sign that says 43B rather than 34B. It's the sign a quarter mile west of the exit (an eastbound sign that says Hampton Avenue/Oakland Avenue/ 1/4 mile). It's clearly visible from the Oakland bridge over 64 and it definitely says 43B. Maybe the numbers just got transposed on that one sign? Thanks for taking the time with these chats.
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: You are right. That sign is incorrect and will be fixed before we open the highway.
Dan
StlMax: Again, thanks for the weekly chats. They are always informative.
This question is related to land use and aesthetics. The northeast corner of the intersection of Brentwood and Eager roads, i.e. south of the eastbound C/D where it follows Eager as it juts south to meet Brentwood, is currently a lay down area for sewer piping and connectors. This area is not really used by the highway itself, but is included in the highway space. It does not seem to have any potential use either for the highway or as commercial space due to accessibility issues. What if anything is planned for this space other than as green space? Are there to be a number of trees planted here? Has anyone given any consideration to adding a fountain or sculpture, maybe even including a commemorative piece to the project, facing the Brentwood/Eager intersection? There appears to be sufficient land, i.e. set back a sufficient distance, to safely allow for a permanent statement piece. Granted, funding is always an issue, but this is very visible corner and I'm sure a lot of interested parties would be willing to participate. Thanks.
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: The City of Brentwood agrees with your ideas. MoDOT has been working with the city on a plan to enhance the corner of Brentwood and Eager by the highway. All the details aren't complete yet, but it will be a nice green space when we are finished.

stlroger: Great information every week and I'm glad to hear you will continue on with it, Linda. I'm submitting this early (Wed. night) in hopes you can get the appropriate person to answer it. The stltoday.com website used to have a link directly to this discussion. But now I can't find it. I have to go to the site map, then discussions, then this discussion. And if I want last week's discussion, I have to back up to the general I-64 Live page and choose the week I want. Am I missing something or is there no easy way to get to this discussion page? If not, can they put it back in?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: They have moved the site around on their website and I have had trouble too. Sometimes they have a link on the homepage in the top news items. This varies depending on the news of the day. If it is not there, the easiest way to get to the chat is to click on Chat on the top menu bar on the homepage.

Dan: I have a question about the new Hanley-Eager jughandle configuration.
Once the intersection re-opens, how will southbound lanes of Hanley access Eager Road? Looking at the map, it appears as though they will turn right on Meridian (as they currently do) and go around the Meridian Building, and then make a left onto Eager. The jughandle itself appears configured to only accept traffic coming from northbound Hanley.
Is my assumption correct, that southbound Hanley drivers will continue to access Eager as they currently do, by going around the back of the Meridian Building and turning left onto Eager? Or will there be a left turn lane to enter the jughandle?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: Yes. Your assumption is correct. MoDOT and the County worked on the design and we just couldn't get every movement accounted for at Hanley and Eager. Southbound Hanley is the only movement that will have to turn right on Meridian, which is now been named Musick Memorial Drive. From there you can get to Eager Road.

DogEatDog: Clayton/Warson: Where Clayton Road runs over a creek under I-64 looks pretty rough, especially the sidewalks. Does the City of Ladue have any plans for this?
Also, will I-170 ever be extended to I-44?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: Yes. The City of Ladue has a project to replace the old bridge and that includes the sidewalks. I think the work is scheduled for 2010. They didn't want to do this while I-64 has been under construction because Clayton Road has been such an important altnerate road.
As for I-170, who knows? MoDOT and the local transportation planning organization, East-West Gateway Council of Governments, studied the idea of extending I-170 to I-44 and to I-55 in the late 1990s. The idea was to build an interstate type parkway to relieve the congestion on roads like Brentwood, Elm, Hanley, Laclede Station, Big Bend, etc. The idea was met with tremendous opposition toward the idea of an interstate going through this area. The regional leaders who sit on the board of East-West Gateway made the decision in 1997 to not extend I-170. Perhaps some day in the future, this study can be looked at again, but I'm afraid that will be a very long time from now.
