Dan Galvin of Gateway Constructors and Linda Wilson of MoDOT will field questions about Highway 40 reconstruction for an hour each Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 02:00 PM CST
Ryan: Once the C-D roads are open, what will the the "signed" way to get from northbound Hanley to 170? With the jughandle open, it's usually very quick to get on 170 from Eager, but the C-D road will also have a connection.
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: You could go either way. The jug handle will get you to I-170 north via Eager or you could take the north CD road from Hanley and use the ramp to I-170 that's just before you get to Brentwood.

Dan

cdawg63026: Why werent there any 'connectors' to hwy's 44 & 55 downtown as part of this project?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: Because this project went from just west of Spoede Road to just east of Kingshighway Boulevard, or almost 10 miles. That's about five miles west of downtown.

Dan

Jeff: When the hwy 40 shutdown originally occurred, a concerted effort was made to synch traffic lights to ease flow on the major roadways (Kingshighway, Hampton, Hanley, etc.) that would be handling a higher traffic volume. Once 40 is reopened, will the lights on these roads remained synched in the current manner?
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: There are no plans to de-sychronize the traffic signals. They will remain synchronized the way they are now.

Dan

gregl: Please don't take this as being critical of the project -- to be able to complete it on-time and under-budget is a major accomplishment.

But, I am curious why the eastern half of the project took a week LONGER than the west half (the work on the east half started in 12/15/2008, it would have completed by the end of November if it took 11 1/2 months like the western half) considering 2008 was the wettest year in the history of St Louis and you didn't face something as complicated as the Clayton/Warson bridge.
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: They were two different projects. While they were about the same in length (miles rebuilt) there were additional structures on the second half and different grading and drainage requirements. We didn't build the same thing twice. We built two different five mile segments of highway.

Dan

Ed: From what I can tell from your maps, if I am going North on Hanley, getting on northbound 170, if I do not want to use the jug-handle, from what I can tell I can keep going over the overpass, and make a left on to some type of service road it looks like. Is that going to be the best way to get to northbound 170 going north on Hanley? That way, one would avoid Eagar.
Dan Galvin and Linda Wilson: Yes, there is a ramp from the collector distributor road along the north side of the highway to northbound I-170. Going north from Hanley you would turn left and keep to the right to use the ramp. You would get in the left lane of the CD road to get to Brentwood.
