Tackleberry: When looking at the current roster and trying to identify a pitcher to audition at closer, at what point do the Cards look at Joel Piniero? Piniero is easily the most unreliable pitcher eyeing a spot in the rotation, especially in innings 3-6 (pitches 51-75 opponents hit .343 in 2008), but in the 1st inning opponents only hit .256 against him. Utilizing Piniero in this role would allow for the Cards to address his vacated spot in free agency with a more effective starting pitcher (Sheets) on a short-term deal.
Jeff Gordon: It is an interesting idea. Both the Mariners and Red Sox took a good look at him as a reliever, for the reason you mentioned. His grasp on a rotation spot seems tenuous, especially with a big supply of starting pitchers still available on the market. As far the closer's role, though, I don't think he has the "out" pitch he needs to succeed there.
Tackleberry: Is it me or does it seem like Mozeliak (or Dewitt via Mo) is making a lot of personnel decisions somewhat on his own accord w/o consulting the man who will be managing this team? When the manager and pitching coach say that Motte and Perez are not ready to assume the role of closer, how is Mozeliak going to contradict that? I just don't remember a season under Jocketty where he was telling LaRussa how to operate.
Jeff Gordon: It is an interesting dynamic, for sure. Mozeliak, at DeWitt's behest, is placing more value on player development and growing players into big league roles. TLR has had more than his share of rookie-of-the-year players over the years, but he wants kids to really EARN then spots by beating out veterans. TLR puts a lot of stock in spring training competition. And Mozeliak can shape the outcome of this "competition" by diminishing it with player moves (and non-moves). The current bullpen situation is a great example of that.
Matt: Jeff,
Are the Cardinals currently working on anything on the trade or free agent front that you know about, and if you don't specifically know, do you feel they will get something done before the spring? Or are they really just sitting back waiting for spring training??
Thanks
Matt from Mass.
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak is sitting back, but there are a LOT of pitchers looking for work. If he is willing to buck up decent cash on a two-year deal, he will be able to hire some protection for the rotation. I believe he MUST do that. Now is not the time to get cute. There is a buyer's out there waiting for be exploited.
roger from lake tahoe: When I question the carinals' lack of activity, I keep hearing that no other team in our division has improved and some are sliding back. So what? To win the wild card we must play against the entire league. So to me, that argument holds no water. Free agent pitchers are getting down to slim pickings. Do you see the team making any move? And if so, who have they targeted? -
Jeff Gordon: I agree that the Cards can't sit back just because other NL Central teams are cutting back. There is an opportunity to beef up the pitching staff at a decent price this year. There is no excuse not to do that.
Philly Rams Fan: Hey Gordo. Have you heard anything about Josh McDaniel's interview? If the Rams were impresed or not? I just read Jim's article about Leslie Frasier being a finalist. Is McDaniel's?
Jeff Gordon: Josh never made it to St. Louis. Denver locked him up.
Dave: I'm really torn about as to 'who' and 'why' the Rams need to hire. I initially thought that Haz really deserves a decent chance and still do believe in him. And I also think as he said, those are not his hand picked players, coaches etc..
After listening to Dan Dierdorf a week or so ago describe how Mike Tomlin blew away those that interviewed him, makes things very interesting. Dan spoke how he came out of no where as the dark horse that nobody actually knew a whole lot about. And how knowledgeable he actually was by blowing people away with his football philosophies. Even Dierdorf said after talking to the guy for two minutes, you understood why he was hired for the Steelers.
I can't wait to see which direction the Rams go but my burning question is.. How often are coaches a victim of the players?? I mean, I think Martz inherited a GOOD team from Vermiele and went on a playoff run. I really, really think this Rams team is one of the most talentless teams I've ever seen. And I've been through season ticks with the Big Red and Rams since day one. The Rams have a mixed bag of players who are 'average' at best.
So how much does a coach influence them. The guy in New England is NOT a 'rah-rah' guy... at least during games ..like Vermiel. I really feel bad for Hazlet. I think he's football smart. I used to hate him in New Orleans like Fisher in Tenn but I always said I'd take either of those guys as a coach if we ever had the chance.
Jeff Gordon: There is more talent here than you would think. And former Rams, deemed not good enough for here, are flourishing in other situations. Take the same players you saw in '08 and put them in better situations and you will see better results. There are some exceptions, of course, but this team had enough talent to win a LOT more than two games, even with all the injuries.
brian robertson: hey jeff i was wondering if the cards will sign 1 more lefty for our bullpen? i would love to have will ohman. also are the cards going to trade a outfielder for a starting pitcher? i still feel like we should sign orlando hudson to play 2nd base for us. thanks
brian robertson
Jeff Gordon: IF the Cards could deal Kennedy's remaining contract and IF the team could sign Hudson for a lot less than $10 million a year, perhaps that could make sense. But I'm guessing that another team, like the Nationals, might step up to give Orlando a suitable deal.
I agree that the Cards need a quality lefty to go with the depth guys already signed. And, yes, the team IS likely to deal an outfielder for pitching help at some point in the spring. There are too many guys in the OF if they all stay healthy.
hezkev: Thanks for your time. being from ME. I was wondering if any of your local sports talk shows were accessable on line? will the head coach have to fit our talent or will we blow it up to get the right coach?
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: Check out "The Sports Edge" and other KFNS shows on-line, at http://www.kfns.com/, where we stream the shows.
Franklin: Oh Jeff,
Let's consider SLU a moment. Assets: big-name coach; new arena; talented (if shrinking) freshman class. Anti-chips: lack of major, long-term tradition; lack of NCAA/NIT runs in recent memory; local stars on squad not having definitive, break-out seasons. All things considered, why so little buzz in community and why such poor attendance in the new gym?
It's me,
Franklin!
Jeff Gordon: More than anything, SLU ticket prices are pretty stiff. There are no cheap seats. And Majerus is still looking to win some "statement" games that tells St. Louis that the Billikens are arriving.
Griff21: The cards don't really need THAT much work. position players are basically set( pick up another middle infielder or 2 to compete for the bench). So all we really need is 4(GOOD) pitchers... 2 solid starters, a spot starter/ long relief & a veteran short-term closer/setup guy. Plus we should sign some long shots , more competition the better. Between injuries & ineffectiveness Carp and Pinerio shouldn't/ won't be in the rotation. as it stands only Waino , Welle & Loshe are set in the rotation.
Jeff Gordon: I don't see them adding two starters and a spot starter, but adding at least one more strong starter would be wise. And it's doable.
Obes10: do you know why Rex Ryan was not chosen for the baltimore job when it was open last year?
Jeff Gordon: Harbaugh blew the Ravens management away with his interview. And the hire really paid off. The guy has lots of charisma.
karmon: Thanks for all your information yougive to us. I know you must get tired of answering the same questions so I am not going ask one that is so typical. I am convinced we will not do anything unitl early spring practice so I quit looking for anything. i do have a comment that will come across stupid but here goes anyway. Troy Glaus is always saying he can't get going until it gets warm so why not have David Freese start out at 3rd and Troy be a back up until it turns warm. We might find out that David is the one to keep and Troy to be the one for a trade bait. If anything would get Troy going maybe it would be someone prducing, if David did, and wake him up in the early part of the year. I am one that believes a pennant can be lost in the early part of the year. I remember a couple of yrs. all we needed to do after the break was play just about .500 and still win. Your can answer in a crazy way too so I won't feel so bad.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards aren't going to sit Glaus just because he tends to start slow. He is a good defensive player. And with some extra attention during the spring, perhaps he can get off to a better start. Freese will play every day at the Class AAA and prove (or disprove) that he is the heir apparent.
Griff21: The All-star game is here this year right? or next? obviously the ballpark village isn't happening. do the cards or the city have any special plans for the area or any other events than the usual all-star activities?
Jeff Gordon: There will be quite a baseball festival downtown. And the surrounding restaurants and bars will make this into quite a party.
Tim: I Rex Ryan is the new Rams head coach not just because hed be a great Coach especially with that bada** defense he runs but also because Lewis Suggs Scott and Landry are all free agents this year, and Id be willing to bet Ryan could lure at least one of those guys here Id take Suggs and Landry. Suggs is a Beast and Landry has upside. Then what id like to see happen. is to see them sign Vilma. I know hes not that beefy MLB everybody wants but hes proved that his size doesnt matter to him ever since hes been in the league. Then resign Atogwe and Bartell of course. Then, Last week I asked Jim Thomas what we could get for Holt and I was shocked when he said possibly a late first so why not do that and draft Terrnace Cody or Raji whoever falls to us and theres are beefy DT Paired with a Healthy Carriker and Long and Hall as the DE. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: If the Rams could get a late first for Holt, the club should jump at that. Maybe other teams really do believe he has something left. As for the free agents, Ryan could attract an extra player or two based on his credibility, but it's not like the Rams have a ton of money to throw into the marketplace. I do like Ryan as a prospective coach, though.
Tim: If Sanchez makes it to our pick in the second round do you think the Rams will jump on that?
Jeff Gordon: A QB in the second round? Hmmm . . . that seems awfully high, unless the Rams maneuver to get a second first-round pick to fill one of the many other needs.
Tim: Who do you think will be a better NFL OT Oher or Smith and why?
Jeff Gordon: Oher. Smith's body type suggests he could be better at guard. Maybe he could stick at RT, but he seems like a bad fit at LT. Maybe he could make the adjustment, but some scouts are skeptical.
Griff21: Oshie is back and andy mac & Mckee are coming soon. we are currently 5th in the Tavares(sp?) lottery. Without a miracle we won't make the playoffs, but if this infusion of talent improves us we will miss out the on the best draft picks. Never would I suggest we try to lose, cuz losing sucks and is no fun. but should we just not try so hard?
Maybe Murry can help out by putting Jensen and Winchester on the top lines.
Jeff Gordon: The Blues could really benefit from one of those top two picks, but, then again, how much more losing can fans absorb?
Tim: Do you think thea Rams will make a strong push for Asomugha in free agency or is someone like Daunte Robinson more Likley?
Jeff Gordon: Landing a top-ranked free agent will be difficult. The only way to get those type of players to a 2-14 team is to overpay dramatically. There isn't enough cap room for that.
DBQIA: Does Chase Patton have a shot in the pros? Is he someone the Rams could consider signing as a free agent?
Jeff Gordon: He has the body type of a NFL quarter, but he did so little downfield passing that it is hard to tell. He ought to be a NFL camp somewhere.
Jason C: I seem to be in the minority by thinking that the Cardinals are doing the right thing by waiting for the market to shake out, but do you think the bargains they are looking for will still be found in spring training? I would be inclined to let Perez and Motte close out games this year and spend what money (if any) there is left on someone like Sheets. I know he's been injury prone, but he just seems to have the most upside and he could be had for a one or two year deal, which is what management is looking for (in reality, we fans have no idea what they are looking for). Of all the FA available, who would you like to have? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: I'd like to see the team buck up to get a lefty, either Perez or Wolf. But neither will come at a big discount, since the Dodgers like Wolf and Perez could still fall back to the Mets.
Larry L'Heureux: Cards need to show the fans some effort of a committment. Recently Tony and Mo stated they would like to sign a pitcher who could start or close if needed. The answer is Derek Lowe. If Carpenter is healthy and can start then Lowe can close while Perez and Motte continue to develop. Lowe had 40+ saves with the Red Sox a few years ago. If Carpenter can not start but is healthy enough to close then Lowe can start. Worse case Perez or Motte can close and Carpenter can start then we have a nice problem on our hands. What is the Lowe down of this happening?
Jeff Gordon: Lowe won't go anywhere where closing is a possibility. He has multiple suitors offering good dollars to start.
John W: Gordo,
There's been some discussion lately that the "Type A" status of some free agents may be making certain teams reluctant to act. Do you get that impression from the Cardinals management? I know they were willing to suck it up for Fuentes, but has the movement towards developing home-grown players made sacrificing that first-round pick a deal breaker?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards were willing to burn a top pick for Fuentes because he was a unique opportunity -- a lefty with closer stuff. They certainly aren't willing to take the same step for a guy like Juan Cruz, for instance.
David: Hey Gordo. Thanks for doing these chats each week. It's nice to see at least some of the local media connected with their listeners/readers.
Anyway, is the current Cardinals management team as shady as it's come off the past few years? I mean, it started with promises of increased payroll if a new stadium was built. I realize that they didn't get the tax payer revenue they wanted, but they never made that promise conditional (at least not at the time). Then they promise to build a small strip of business around Busch Stadium, and we all know how that turned out. Money issues set to the side for the moment, Mo was quoted when the season ended as saying that the Cardinals would be aggressive, whether it be through trades or free agency. A few days ago, he had a radio interview where he said that he'd be "happy" with the team as it is heading into spring training. Happy? Are you kidding me!? Besides Khalil, they've only detracted from their current roster. Is Khalil really enough to take an above .500 club that persuaded Mo to use the adjective "aggressive" when initially approaching the offseason enough to make him "happy" until the season starts?
I love my Cardinals Gordo. I always will. But I hate being lied to, and with so many previous examples of dishonesty, how is anyone supposed to trust what the Cardinals say anymore?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards did raise payroll after getting a new stadium and they did win a World Championship. So all this chatter about fan betrayal is bizarre, to say the least. Ballpark Village was always something of a pipe dream, given the state of the local economy BEFORE all the stuff hit the fan in 2008.
As for this team, I agree that more needs to be done. The Cards need to take the money Fuentes turned down and spend it on a left-handed starting pitcher. That will balance up the rotation a bit and protect the team from the inevitable injuries that will hit the rotation.
More changes are in the offing, even if Mozeliak expresses satisfaction with the current mix. Some of that is just posturing to agents and other GMs. Mo will have to convert some of his OF/3B surplus into other assets, preferably pitching.
BrummerStealsHome: It has been reported that the Texas Rangers are trying to move starting pitchers Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla. Either would fit into the Cardinal rotation nicely under the tutelage of Duncan. Are the Cards showing any interest? The Rangers need a 1st baseman (and a DH for that matter) so Duncan and a minor league starter could get the job done.
Jeff Gordon: That is the type of deal that could happen IF the Cards get their injured guys (Duncan, Ankiel) back to full strength during spring training. Scouts will follow this team closely, due to the obvious OF surplus.
eddog: i think the rams should take mark sanchez with the #2 pick.Look what it did for both the ravens and falcons by taking a QB with there first pick.
Jeff Gordon: True, but both teams had fewer immediate need than this team has. And neither team had enormous money invested in a veteran QB that can't be moved.
Tim: Is 35-40 Homeruns with 110-120 RBI's and a .290-.300 AVG legit for Wallace when at his prime
Jeff Gordon: Maybe the homer total is a little high, but the guy can really hit. The experts love him at the plate.
etp_stl: Hey Jeff, thanks for answering some questions for us. I know the Rams still need to find a Head Coach, but I have a couple of coordinator questions for you.
1) Are the Rams worried about missing out on the better coordinators out there if they don't get this search wrapped up this week?
2) What do you think of Mike Nolan as the DC?
3) What names do you hear for OC that believe in a Run-to-Set-Up-the-Pass type of offense? The West Coast has become predominant, but I would like to see an offense built around Jackson.
Thanks in advance.
Jeff Gordon: There is urgency to wrap this up ASAP, since the top assistant coaches ARE going off the board. Nolan is one of several interesting candidates for defensive coordinator this summer, depending on who gets the Rams job. (If Rex Ryan got it, for it, he would merely hire one of his Ravens staffers as the nominal coordinator.)
The offensive coordinator will depend, again, on the head coach. Had McDaniiels been the guy, he would have run his own offense with a nominal coordinator leading the meetings.
rmusgrav: Gordo - Do you thing ownership and management care/pay attention to the negative opinions on the Cardinal Blogs? Is there something to be said about a fan base that has been very supportive in the past, but lately seems to be turning?
Jeff Gordon: Cards ownership will pay attention if attendance plunge. Fans have been wanting to fire La Russa on the Internet since he got here -- and we saw how ownership reacted to that sentiment.
Frank Wild: I saw on another forum that the question was raised why aren't the old time Cardinals hall of famers on the outfield wall. Why are Frisch, Medwick, Haines, and Bottomley not on the wall with people like Sutter who was only here four years. I don't think they should retire a number for them but put them up like Hornsby with the old style STL. In fact why not put George Sisler and Cool Papa Bell out there too with the stl from theBrowns and Negro league Stars caps. How about starting a petition to get them out there.
Jeff Gordon: We'll throw that idea out there and see if people agree.
pat: Jeff,
Do you know the mystery candidate that Jim Thomas mentioned yesterday: "However, league sources told the Post-Dispatch that there apparently is an unknown candidate — a Rams mystery candidate, if you will — whose name hasn't been mentioned yet in media reports".
Jeff Gordon: If I knew who that was, I'd tell Jim. Knowing Thomas, he'll get to the bottom of that in a hurry. He has done his usual great job monitoring the search.
Jeremy: Hey Gordo!
IF Jake Peavy starts the year in San Diego, is there anyway ownership would consider a trade deadline move to get him? I just can't see how if a guy like Peavy is available, you don't make the move. The guy is downright nasty and I think he'd be a perfect fit in STL and no matter how much money the small bears spend, would put us as the front runner in the NL central instantly. Pitching and defense wins games....not keeping your powder dry.
Thanks!
Jeremy in P.B.
Jeff Gordon: It'll be interesting to see where Peavy goes. Apparently the Padres sale will be done on a time-release basis, so there could still be tough budgeting this year. The Cubs might have the best shot of reviving those trade talks.
ram4life: Gordo, i gotta know, is there any truth to this "mystery candidate" for our head coaching position rumor that's going around?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, there is truth to that -- because the preferred Rams candidates from other organizations are going off the board.
rich: Good afternoon Gordo,
Do you think Frazier is Delvaney's top target for the Rams head coaching gig?
I have say it has been very difficult to discern the exact direction of the Rams head coaching search. In fact Delvaney and company have been treating this search like the draft, keeping their cards close to their vest versus trumpeting their intentions from on high.
Thanks for these chats
Jeff Gordon: Frazier is the first outsider to advance to the finalist role, but I wouldn't make him the favorite just yet.
jlallgier1: Have you heard much around the league about Bartell? I was wondering if he was thought of as an up and coming DB? Or is he a one hit wonder? What FA do you think the Rams will try to target? MLB, RB, Safety?
Jeff Gordon: Bartell will get some play in the marketplace. He has made great strides. As for FA targets, let's see how the head coach/coordinator search plays out. Only then will we know what system the team will play on both sides of the ball and where the priorities are.
fletch32: Gordo,
The mystery head coaching candidate IS Jim Harbaugh. Have you guys been holding out or just behind the proverbial 8-ball?
Jeff Gordon: Jim has moved into play elsewhere, so there isn't a lot of mystery about him. His brother's fine work has helped him, no doubt.
dave cobler: Hey Gordo; Thanks so much for taking this time with us sports fans!
Looking at the Cardinal roster as it stands, a "realistic" outlook for the team would seem to be that they will compete, but fall out of contention again, unless things really break their way, (ie.,...injuries to key players on other teams in the NL and the cards stay healthy all year, etc). I don't see the logic in counting on Carpenter based upon the perplexity of that nerve injury in his upper back. Without Carp or another solid arm to take his spot in the rotation it appears to me this team is destined to fall short. I think Motte and Perez need more grooming and that opinion is formed coming from what I hear TLR and Dunc saying, which the PD is reporting. I really appreciated the way the team busted their tails last year. They played like they had something to prove. If only they had had the pitching, they would have won the division. I do not think there is anything left to get (unless it be Derek Lowe) that can help the Cards this year unless it comes through a trade. What are your thoughts on the matter Gordo? For now, I am just not to optimistic about this season and I am not blaming the Cardinal ownership or the GM. The market is what it is. The big guys the Cards needed were just to much money and the others that are left fall off to much to help the Cards IMO.
Thank you for your time here Gordo! It is very very much appreciated!
Jeff Gordon: There lots of free agent pitchers capable of helping this team. And there could be numerous trade scenarios emerging this spring once everybody sees what Ankiel, Duncan and Rasmus can do.
It is way too soon to assess this team's chances for this season.
etp_stl: Jeff,
I have another one for you. Do you think the Rams Head Coach position is less desirable to some because the next coach would be saddled with the Bulger & Holt situations? Thanks, again.
Jeff Gordon: The next coach would have to have some belief in Bulger. Otherwise, why come here? Holt can be dealt with easily enough.
redbirdswin: Gordo,
Mozeliak hinted that the recent news he received on Carp was some of the best news he's heard in awhile. That's great and all, but it should not deter the Cards from pursuing another starting pitcher. That said, how long into Spring Training will we be waiting until there is an addition to the rotation?
Jeff Gordon: As I've said all along, all updates on Carpenter must be disregarded. When he pitches again, great, pay attention. Nothing else matters. The Cards need to add another pitcher, but the Carpenter "updates" are just part of the cat-and-mouse game Mozeliak is playing with agents. He would be crazy to pass on decent veteran starting pitching once the market comes down to two years.
redbirdswin: LaRussa and Duncan still think the kids should not assume the closer role in 2009. The Cards have not (yet) added a veteran closer to bridge the transition either. So what are the chances that Josh Kinney is the closer to begin the 2009 season?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards wonder if his arm will be strong enough for that, but he had a whole winter to gear up for the '09 season. To me, he is a real desirable option to at least share that role.
RamTough99: Hi Jeff,
Since the Rams players sent the petition to keep Coach Haslett, has Devaney or any of the management or owners met with any of the players to get their input as to why he should stay? It is a very touching statement but I think the Rams need to go in adifferent direction.
Thanks,
Ken
Jeff Gordon: I agree. When Devaney met with players, his only question should be this: WHY DID YOU LOSE WEEK AFTER WEEK AFTER WEEK? Petitions are like greeting cards. The sentiment is nice, but deeds are more meaningful.
Crazy_Legs: Gordo you recently wrote about Marc Bulger: "What if his teammates regained confidence in him?" . After two years of poor play is Bulger losing the confidence/support of fellow Ram players?
Jeff Gordon: When a team loses almost every game it plays with a certain quarterback at the helm, that becomes a problem.
Adam S. (Indy): Gordo,
Thanks so much for taking our questions. I don't normally ask questions because the majority of Cardinal fans know their baseball, so there hasn't been a need. Until I read about how M.Young (SS-Rangers) has requested a trade and says he is willing to move back to 2b. The Rangers want a 3b in return.
Riddle me this batman: Which of our young 3Bers would it take to get him? Could we put Freese, Kennedy, and name another prospect (Jones?) in a package for him or am I just living the dream? If that's true... I hope I don't wake up. I'm hoping we wouldn't have to include the Walrus, 'cuz that kid can mash, but it may be worth it. Your thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: The Rangers might consider a package of Wainwright, Freese, Jones and somebody else -- not Kennedy, who has less than no trade value right now. So that's not happening, especially since Greene is in place to play short this year.
Bruce: Jeff
I can't help but think the Rams will be moving back to Los Angeles. It just seems with the current state of the franchise along with the owners and head coaching interviews in Los Angeles along with Ed Roskis' plan to build a stadium in the LA area. The Rams always seem to come up as a possible team to relocate can you ease my mind?
Jeff Gordon: Let's see if anybody with local ties steps up to buy the team. That will decide it.
John: Mr Gordon,
Devaney has strong ties to Bethard. Bethard was in S.D. when their turn-around began, correct? Now we have news of a mystery candidate. All along the name that seems like it would make sense in this Rams coaching search...Marty Schottenheimer (sp?). Your odds on Martyball coming to STL as the mystery-man?
Jeff Gordon: Marty would be a better fit for the team president role the Rams apparently don't plan on filling.
terryr: Why don't they trade Brad Thompson,Chris Duncan,Ankiel for a good Pitcher and a good hitter,to back up Albert Puhol.
Jeff Gordon: Thompson has no trade value. Duncan, coming off two injuries, has no trade value. Ankiel, a year from free agency, has some trade value -- but not as much as you would think.
ljramsfan: Hey Gordo,
I have two questions. The first one is are the Rams going to get a quality backup i.e Leftwich, and/or get Matt Leinhart??
The second question is that do you really think they are going to clean up and cut a lot of veterans to get a lot new personnel??
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: I don't see Arizona pitching Matt. And if the Gridbirds did that, why would this team take on that salary for a guy who hasn't done a thing in the NFL.
And, yes, there will be a lot of change in St. Louis. A better back-up QB is one of the many needs.
ueaces: Hi Gordo,
Difficult to assess what the salaries are going to be like for the remaining free agent pitchers, but I am hoping they will be within striking distance of the Cards. Injuries are always a risk with SP's, but if Ben Sheets is given a clean slate by physicians, I really hope St. Louis will have him on the radar. Is this thought at all realistic?
Jeff Gordon: Trouble is, other teams are looking at Sheets and seeing damaged goods -- despite the fact he held up OK last year. Maybe Milwaukee will take him back, but the Cards won't gamble on him for big money.
isaacbrucefan: Ok Jeff...first off whats with the shroud of mystery over this new unspoken HC candidate with the Rams?
Looks like Spags is headed to the Jets today for a 2nd interview which means he is most likely the guy for them. If you had to guess today, who do you think will get the job for the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: Ryan needs to have his West Coast interview, which could be a problem with his candidacy. Everything that has happened so far has favored Haslett's candidacy.
Jeepster: Gordo: Care to rethink your earlier assessment of Mozeliak being a competent G.M. yet? "Aggressive" eh?
Jeff Gordon: Write back in August or so, after we've seen the team play some games and make (or not make) the needed adjustments.
Joey: A dream team of Haslett, Martz (Marx?) and Capers seems too combustible. I believe a fresh start is needed and Leslie Frazier seems like a good defense first guy.
1-Any word who the "secret candidate" is?
2-Are their any free agents the Rams want to bring back other than Bartell and Atogwe?
Thank you for the time you put into this Q and A.
Jeff Gordon: That Gang of Three would be entertaining to cover, though. So there is that. Bartell and Atogwe are the key guys on D and among the few Rams to play even above average football on that side of the ball this year. (The others were younger players like Long, Ryan and Adeyanju).
Kevin Kohler: There are still many big names out there on the free agent list. When do these big names (i.e. Lowe) become low enough hanging fruit for the Cardinals to become involved in talks with him or people of his caliber. We keep hearing the "be patient" speech but when will Lowe be hanging low enough for us if ever? What a great head line, "Lowe Hanging Fruit Harvested in St. Louis."
Jeff Gordon: Lowe is still up there on one of the higher branches. There is no chance to get him, given the front office's current mindset.
David McBride: Thanks for taking my question. I was wondering how you thought the outfield situation would be worked out. There is an abundance of outfielders in St Louis but also still several free agent outfielders. If no trade what scenario do you invision as far as who makes the team, how many OFers to have on the roster, or any position changes(etc). Also Amaury Cazana has really shown the ability to hit. Where do you think he will play next year and do you see a spring training invite for him?
Jeff Gordon: Amaury Marti has hit all over this hemisphere, but he isn't viewed as a big-league prospect this late in his career. Barring a trade -- which is still likely this spring -- then Ludwick, Ankiel, Schumaker, Mather and Duncan would make the team. If Rasmus has a great spring, he could muscle Schumaker into the fourth outfielder role. Mather will get a look in the Spiezio INF/OF role, since he can play 3B. But a more likely scenario has one of those guys exiting in a deal.
cardfanfromeurope: Good afternoon Mr. Gordon,
I'm a long time Cardinals fan. But from Europe it is difficult to remain up to date. Stltoday is to me a big help to find out all the news and rumors around my favourite team. Thank you for it.
Now to my question. Everybody speaks about pitching and how thin the cardinals rotation is.
Do we all have to wait until Lowe signs a contract? Or is there a chance Mo grabs a low hanging fruit. Looper, Perez, Wolfe?
And what about Hudson for 2b?
Thanks for your time and sorry for my English
Jeff Gordon: Hudson isn't a candidate at 2B as long as Kennedy is still here. Of the pitchers mentioned, it would be nice to see the Cards invest in either Wolf or Perez or balance up the rotation.
sweety60: Jeff,
The hysteria of Cardinal nation is crazy. Realistically...we're not that far behind the Cubbies and spring training has almost always produced a surprise or two that improves the team, right?
Jeff Gordon: We're a long way from playing actual games.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
How frustrated is BD3 with the Cardinal fan base? MLB Network just replayed Game 7 of the NLCS...which led to a 10th WS title if you recall....in 2006! I'm all for criticizing bad moves, or non-moves. But it is January 12. If this is the team we take into the season, I think BD3 and Mo deserve some criticism. This ownership group has had a great run, and I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt here. Mo has made one questionable move, with Joel Piniero. The farm looks promising for once. Does BD3 have a choice to have sour grapes (cut payroll down to $80 million and sell the team) or is he stuck with us and forced to continue to spend?
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt could care less that fans whine in the chats and forums. If fans quit coming to the games for whatever reason, then he will scale back the payroll accordingly. I believe he has legitimate concerns that a grim 2009 economy will cut into the team's revenue this season, even with the All-Star Game guaranteeing good season ticket sales.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Assuming Pujols has his typical first half, do you think he is going to get the respect he deserves and get voted in by the fans/players, or is he going to be another coach's choice? Aside from injury, is there any way MLB allows an all-star game to be played in STL in which AP is not a part of it?
Jeff Gordon: Well, he has to get voted in. There is no way around that. Coming off a MVP season, he ought to get some love outside of the STL.
Kevin: Do you think that the cards ownership is maybe feeling a little pressure from the fans to get at least SOMETHING done here soon?
You agree that by having signed milton bradley, the cubs have now one of the worst fielding outfields?...haha the flubs
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, we're sure Bradley is a National League player. Soriano is in the same boat.
tc22: Gordo,
Just WHO are Mozeliak and DeWitt waiting to sign? The Cardinals need at least one starting pitcher on the back end of the rotation. No, I don't believe that Chris Carpenter will ever be the pitcher he was or that he will even pitch more than 50-60 innings this season. I see P Kenshi Kawakami was signed by Atlanta. Why did the Cardinals quit on him? Only Wolfe, Perez, Looper, and Sheets remain (unless you count the unaffordable Derek Lowe) as semi reliable starting pitchers. None of them appear to be even considered by the Cardinals. Is this team really satisfied with the group of starters they curently have? Are they nuts?
Jeff Gordon: There are plenty of potential double-digit winners unsigned, besides the guys you mentioned. I do believe they need to sign one of them. And I know they have the money to make that happen.
Cards4520: Where do you see Maclin going in the draft? Does he have a desire to play for Saint Louis at some point in his career?
Jeff Gordon: I'm sure he'd love to play here, but he will go somewhere in the middle of the first round -- after the Rams fill another need.
redbirdswin: Gordo,
Fuentes chose Anaheim, where he wanted to be. The Cards did, however, make a decent offer to him for around $8MM per season. So ideally, the Cards "should" still have $8MM to offer to another free agent (a starting pitcher) now, correct?
Jeff Gordon: Correct.
tc22: GORDO,
The Yankees appear to be obsessed with acquiring a quality CF to their stable of stars. What are the chances of the Cardinals trading Rick Ankiel for one of their young starters like Ian Kennedy or Phil Hughes? Statistically, they both stunk last season, but they both have a very high ceiling. Sounds like the Yankees are getting rid of some of their OFs as they continue to search for an answer in CF. We all know that Ankiel will be a free agent after this season and the cheap skate Cardinals certainly won't re-sign him!
Jeff Gordon: Since the Cards have Rasmus waiting to play CF and guys like Duncan and Mather rather to play some corner OF this spring, dealing Ankiel (a free agent in a year) for a young pitcher makes perfect since. The Yankees aren't worried about re-signing the guy. Obvious the Cards ARE concerned.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, I do like that Billy Devaney is dotting the I's and crossing the T's in his coaching search, but Are we going to have a coach before free agency or the draft? If Devaney doesn't speed it up just a tad, our assistant coaches might come from the high school ranks. I'm not complaining, I just want the best available of the assistant coaches.
Jeff Gordon: There is plenty of urgency in the search. But the Rams have to get in line behind Denver (which signed McDaniels) and the Jets.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, in your opinion who is the favorite right now for head coach?
Jeff Gordon: Only Frazier and Haslett have gotten to Round Two, so it's impossible to say. I'm stick with my support of Rex Ryan.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, can you tell me anything about coach Fraizer? I don't know much about him other then he coaches for the Viqueens and I personally don't think much of Brad Childress. Maybe Fraizer would be a better coach for them then Childress.
Jeff Gordon: Don't know a lot about Frazier except his pedigree, which is fine. I know that John Harbaugh has given him a ringing endorsement, which counts for something. I can't predict whether he would have the leadership chops needed to run a whole operation.
Armen Dacity: I'm sure 99% of your questions will be about the Head Coach position, so I'll go in another direction.
As bad as his behavior was, and as mediocre as his play was, I can't see any logical reason not to tender Richie Incognito at a contract level that would bring the Rams a 3rd round pick if he is signed elsewhere. I suspect some other team would likely offer him a better deal, and the Rams could use the extra pick. Agree?
Jeff Gordon: Absolutely. Letting this asset go would be foolish. Richie is goofy, but there is still a chance he could become a powerful NFL offensive lineman.
Tshow: Any info on how the "hurt" Rams rehabilitation is going?
Hill, Bennett, McMichael, King, Setterstrom, Leonard, etc.
Jeff Gordon: Will Bennett even come to camp? Good question there. Haven't heard of any concerns about the others seven months out from camp.
marpdagn: Hey, Gordo. Do you think the Cards brass has a real grasp on the feelings of the fan base? Do you think they really care? I for one am tired of their excuses for not spending what it takes to make this team better. You know, if they only said "we are not going past 100 mil", that's one thing. But to continually promise the fans that they will be aggessive in pursuit of free agents and do what's necessary to upgrade this team is a disservice to their fans if they don't really mean it. Barring some MAJOR acquisition this offseason, I won't be going to any Cards games next year.
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt cares if people buy tickets or not. And the approach he is taking -- investing more player development, retaining key players -- gives this franchise the best opportunity to remain competitive year after year. If the Cards contend year after year, then fans will buy tickets.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, why was it reported on the post dispatch that Josh McDaniels was interviewed, and now we find out that he just got on the phone with Devaney and no interview actually happen?
Jeff Gordon: They talked, but obviously the Broncos made a strong play to lock up Josh before he got out of town.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, is there any chance the mystery candidate could be Dick Vermiel or Mike Martz? I fully know the reasons against both, but I havn't seen anyone else blow us away to hire them.
Jeff Gordon: Vermeil is too far down the pike to coach again. And Mad Mike is still Mad Mike -- an unlikely person to lead the whole operation after his disastrous personnel decisions while coach.
zuke354: I keep reading how the cards have not signed any players this year. Am I the only one who sees value in Lohse.
Had Lohse opted for Free Agency, how do you think he would have ranked amont the free agent pitchers?
Jeff Gordon: Lohse would have fit in after Lowe and ahead of guys like Perez and Wolf, based on his durability and the way he threw last year.
Mike Menozzi: So when are the Cards going to "be aggressive" this off season, as they stated they would be?
Do you think this Cardinals team is ANY better than the one that finished 4th last year?
Jeff Gordon: Just with the team in place -- which will change, mind you -- the Cards will be better than fourth place. Greene will add 15 to 20 homers to the offense, upgrading over Izturis. Project the numbers Perez, Motte and Kinney posted late last season over a whole year and you see where bullpen improvement is likely. The team has developed some power pitching for late-inning work. The Cards have far more position players on the cusp, which provides insurance against injuries.
And this team still has money to spend and players to deal. It's January, people. JANUARY!
Joe Stafford: Jeff, any news on a sale of the team yet? Frankly I wish someone would buy the team and move them back to Los Angles. With St. Louis really being a baseball town and my own selfish desire to be able to drive down to LA and see them several times a year, and for the betterment of the team in being able to produce more revenue in the second largest tv market in the U.S. I am suprised CR just doesn't move them himself. Beside that, all the Finalest interviews are being held there anyway.
Jeff Gordon: If LA finally builds a state-of-the-art stadium, there would be candidates more likely than the Rams to move there. The only way the Rams return is if nobody with Missouri ties steps up to buy the team. If that happens, then, yes, the Rams could move to the front of the line in LA.
Cameron: With the talk of Michael Young wanted out of the Rangers' organization, does this at all open up the possiblity that the Cardinals could make a trade for him and shift Greene over to second, thus having Kennedy as one of our top bench guys for the infield? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: It would take a lot to get Young. A LOT. Texas ought to ask for elite young pitching to start with. The Cards have some plusses in their farm system, but there aren't a lot of on-the-cusp starting pitchers. Jaime Garcia's injury was a big setback on that front.
I advocated the exploration of this deal back in the summer, but the addition of Greene makes it less likely now. Greene is an excellent defensive SS. If all goes well, he might be a good candidate to stick around for a while.
Jordon W.: Thanks for the chats, Gordo. With Michael Young willing to move to second base, does Mo even contact the Rangers about a trade? With them looking to get a Major League ready third baseman in return, would Freese be a good enough player to center a package around? Who else would have to be included?
Jeff Gordon: I assume the Rangers would want pitching. I assume Wainwright would be their starting point. Young is a unique player, a capable SS with huge offensive production. I can't imagine Texas taking back just position players in return.
deebox: Hey Gordo iam back again the cardinals need to sign Hudson Kennedy is not the answer for the cardinals. He will not hit consistent for along period of time. We need more offense, and guys that make contact. Have you ever watched Albert standing on base with glaus comming up, he dropps his head and looks discusted. And rightfully soe glaus dosent make contact very much and it hurts the team. And if the front office is hoping on carpenter to save their season, the they better pull their head out of the hole that their in.
Jeff Gordon: I'd rather have Ludwick hitting clean up against lefties and Ankiel the rest of the time, assuming Rick isn't traded. Hudson is a nice player, but I don't mind Kennedy hitting .270 or .280 for another year. If Adam fails, there will be less expensive options than Hudson moving forward.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, how do you feel the interview process is going? Who is your own personal favorite to get the job?
Jeff Gordon: I've been in the tank for Rex Ryan -- and the playoffs haven't changed that a bit.
Kevin: Hi Gordo,
I've been a Rams fan since I was very young. Since 1990, with the exceptions of a few years (great years I might add), it has been very frustrating to be a Rams fan. Particularly, the last few. I am wondering if you personally feel that the changes the Rams have made in the front office will help this team become more competitive more often? I know every teams has their down years, but this teams down years just seem to keep dragging on and on. It would nice to see their down years be fewer than their up years for a change.
Thanks for your time!
Jeff Gordon: What we're seeing now are just stopgap measures. The real key for this team is the next owner -- and the front office the next owner installs. What we're seeing now is just an interim management situation.
gnykin2: Do you have any idea where the Cardinals currently are in season ticket sales (compared to the last few years at the same time)? This would be something really interesting to know. I am curious if all of the fan frustration has resulted in a drop in sales.
Jeff Gordon: With the All-Star Game here, season ticket holders get a crack at that. So there is no chance for a big falloff there. It'll be interesting to see how the single-ticket sales play out, especially with those folks coming a distance (or not) to see the team play this summer.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, I see a report that Rex Ryan is now the Jets front runner. Did a Rams interview actually happen Sunday Morning with Devaney, or was this just another Josh McDaniels phone call? The Jets have interviewed 8 coaches, I believe the Bronco have interviewed 7, and we are at maybe 3? Are you kidding me? Are the Rams ever going to get it together? If Devaney keeps dinking around, we are going to get stuck with another Loserhand! If this keeps up, we are going to be Begging for Mike Martz to Please come back. (Frankly not a bad Idea to me)!
Jeff Gordon: Billy went to Baltimore to talk to him, so Rex would still have to do the LA thing -- IF the Jets don't hire him.
kozel: People are buzzing about Michael Young today, and some are even suggesting the Cards as a longshot suitor(!), due to the handful of promising 3Bs in our farm. Any chance they would look at it, and do you think it's worth a look? As nice as it would be to have Young as an SS option for the next few years, I can't imagine he would take precedent over our remaining pitching needs, especially considering his pricetag.
Cheers!
Jeff Gordon: It's hard to imagine making that deal without sacrificing pitching. But this is a deal I chatted up last summer, when it became apparent that Texas had another SS on the rise.
Cards Fan: Gordo,
Report out of TX is that Michael Young is available. Any chance a combo of Ankiel and AK to TX for Young works? I am sure they will want pitching in return, but a middle infield of Greene and Young sounds pretty good to me.
Jeff Gordon: Repeat after me: ADAM KENNEDY HAS NO TRADE VALUE! If another team wanted him, he would already be gone.
steve: Thanks Jeff,
I don't understand why the Cards only want to sign everyone (except the core) to only one year. Won't we be in the exact same place in a year if we do that? Are they planning to sell the team or something? What's the matter with having a good releiver or second baseman or SP for that matter for 2 years? The price is always going up.
Jeff Gordon: They are willing to sign another starting pitcher to a two-year deal. But with Wainwright, Carpenter and Lohse getting long-term dough, Mozeliak doesn't want to commit longer money to a fourth starter.
With so many players are the rise in the farm system, it's wise to keep some flexibility with contracts.
rams26: Hello Jeff -
Thanks for these chats. Do you think this so call "coaching search" is just an act. I get the feeling that the Rams want to hire Haslett all along, but are concerned on how to sell it to the fans. There are far better candidates than Haslett. Also, do you think the Rams leaked out the bringing back of Martz with Haslett so see how the fans would react, hoping we fall for it?
Thank you in-advance!
GO RAMS!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Haslett floated the Martz thing himself, hoping to get a favorable PR push. As for Haslett's candidacy, I think he is a solid fallback if the guys Billy really like go elsewhere.
Jack Clark: How can Haslett say he wants to focus on a power running game and then throw out Martz's name as a possible OC? Does that make sense? I gotta think the Rams would be better wiping the slate clean and starting fresh.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed. I wrote a column to that point last week.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, the biggest thing that really burns me up about this coaching search is that the Rams won't get to coach in the Seinor bowl again this year. We should have done it last year as well, but Loserhand fired some coaches. With the complete lack of talent on this team, coaching your possible draft picks for a week could and should give the team inside knowledge of who to pick in the draft, and again this year, our head coach is stuck in the stands hiring assistant coaches, if he is even hired at all.
Jeff Gordon: That's not a big deal, IF your scouts have done their job. The Rams are better off making sure they get the coaching decision right.
Joel Koch: If Michael Young is actually available, what are the chances that the Cardinals try to pounce on him? DeWitt has said he would raise payroll for the right player, and Young is game changer. Sure, he plays in a band box, but he's still a solid hitter. What about a deal involving Freese, Jay, Jones, Mortenson, McClellan/Boggs/Walters, Kozma/other player, and Kennedy (Kennedy thrown in to move Kinsler to LF or RF to hide his bad defense). If the Rangers would kick in $22.5 million ($7.5 million of the deferred, and $3 million a year of his annual salary), I would be fine with that above deal. It sells the farm, but for the right player who is already on a long term deal and would plug an organizational hole.
Then there's Jon Garland. Any chance we sign him? He's a good pitcher that reminds me a lot of Suppan. He could stabilize the rotation.
Jeff Gordon: Why would the Rangers pay Young, their franchise guy, to play elsewhere? That would be the first question to ask. Your package is closer to what it would take, especially with McClellan and Jones in the mix with Freese and others.
steve: Gordo:
Should the Cardinals come clean with the fans about the money problems and join the small market concept like the Twins?
Should the team trade Rick Ankeil now to try to get something?
Does this mean that Albert is out of here after this contract?
If ALbert goes; it would like trading Stan the Man in the 1950s like Trader Lane wanted to do.
Why can not Cardinals just tell it like it is and the fans would not be so upset?
Jeff Gordon: What money problems? The Cards have money problems?
My guess is this: When it's all said and done, the Cards will rank about where they always rank in team payroll.
Ron kinder: Why is this general manager acting so passive? To make a statement that our bullpen is ok and because of his inaction during the baseball meetings, to say we will now fix our problems internally is ludacrous! This guy needs to be replaced immediately! Either he is being dictated to by ownership or he is living on another planet
Jeff Gordon: I would be shocked if the 40-man roster is exactly the same at the end of spring training. I'm willing to assess the team after it has actually played some games.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, If you had one free agent that you could sign, from who's pontenially a free agent right now, who would it be? Mine would be Jordan Gross, LT Panthers
Jeff Gordon: I would draft my tackle this season and see which safeties, linebackers and NTs become available.
apstl187: Hey Gordo,
Can we just Hire HaZ, get Martz in here, Hire a good D coordinator, and move on? We need to have this thing together by Senior Bowl. MARTZ MARTZ MARTZ is key, its a joke he gets fired for making teams better. EXP. The Rams, Detroit and I can alomost garuntee San Frans O falls back to last in NFL in 09. Numbers dont lie!!!
Jeff Gordon: Martz is a bad fit for the his offense for reasons that have been carefully articulated elsewhere on this site.
Harold: Hi Jeff,
Do you know who the Rams mystery coaching canidate and can you tell us who it is? So far we have people guessing that it is Vermeil, Shannahan or Shottenheimer. Do you think the mystery canidate their first choice? And if Rex Ryan is the choice, can he bring in his brother Rob even though he's going to Cleveland but haven't heard he signed a contract yet?
Jeff Gordon: Guessing from Devaney's wish list to date, it's hard to imagine an old-timer getting a serious look.
alex from mexico: hola gordo ( the only fan of the rams here)
in my opinion the problem with the rams is the Defense.
Marc Bulger has 2 Pro Bowl soo this guy it's good, the O-line in my opinion has to be Orlando Pace, Greco, get a center in the draft or Free agent, Incognito, Barron., and get rid of Bell to have more cap room... ive seen all the year and its to smalln like tinoisamoa.
So the next year with Holt, Bennett, Avery and Burton, (Leonard FB) it's a good ofensee.
THE DEFENSE its the problem we need a true MLB, Witherspoon OLB, Tinoo OLB but with a little more pounds. D-line more heavy, we need a guy like Casie Hampton or Shaun Rodgers, alsoo a SS... Corey Chavous and Todd JONHSon are not the solucion i run faster than him. Corners are good with Bartell ( Pro bowl for me ) and we need to se Justin King. We dont have to draft a corner tye hill its good belive me, (all the pases that burned him its with closer reciver).
graciaas y cual es tu opinion Gordo. what its your opinion?
Jeff Gordon: Can't get rid of Bell one year into the contract.
Why bring Bennett back? Why pretend Leonard is a fullback?
Why pretend Hill is headed for the Pro Bowl?
Matt: Regarding the recent criticism of Cards Managementy by Cardinal Nation, I believe we are caught where both parties are right. Cards fans are right to criticize false hopes of "aggressive", "creative", etc.. dedication to building a winner. At this point, management is clearly valuing long term flexibility and talent over short term competitiveness. Saying anything else is misleading. Yet they seem to try to always say something else over the last 12 months. At the same time, $100 million is a good payroll (read "not cheap") for this market and especially in these economic times. We are potentially in the middle of a sports "bubble" where player salaries will have to yeild to the financial instability of the present. having the Cards sign someone just to placate fans at what they deem to be an inflated cost would be irresponsible. So management is right to be methodical. To me the issue is why the Cards keep floating higher expectations. Why do they not just come clean? I believe they would be surprised by the support as most people I know actually applaud the youth movement... if it were justed openly stated as such. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see where the Cards have raised expectations with wild proclamations. Mozeliak traded for a starting shortstop and offered a would-be closer more guaranteed money than he actually got. He made offers to several lefty relievers and signed a couple of them. He is not done spending and he is not done looking at deals.
David: Hey Gordo,
As a sportswriter for the Post, do you have quite a bit more inside information (that you can't reveal) on the things the Cards are doing right now with trades and free agency, or are you in the dark on these issues like most of us?
Is it safe to say STL fans are going throwback and referring to the Arizona Cardinals as "our team?" (Keep it going Kurt!)
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak is telling it like it is. The marketplace right now is at a virtual standstill. A lot of agents shot down his earlier offers, so he is sitting back to see how it all plays out. He knows he will have a contender this season, so he sees no need to act rash.
dakelaw: Re: Juan Cruz and other type A and B free agents. If no one wants to make an offer on these unsigned guys because the team does not want to give up a draft pick, does there reach a point where these players can be signed without losing the pick? Or, are they in limbo forever? Is there an incentive for their old team to sign them to avoid this problem?
Jeff Gordon: You can get another team like the Yankees, which has spent is high compensatory picks, sign the guy and deal him to you to get around the draft pick thing.
dcrams20: Gordo, now that another job has come open in Indy, do you see the Rams Brass speeding up process for a new coach?
Jeff Gordon: I'd go with with whatever guy the Jets don't want and roll from there. Make it happen!
Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff and Thank You for taking my questions. I want to know what you thought about last nights game against Edmonton. I did not see us making good passes and we could not cotrol the points the whole game. Is there anything the Blues can do to get better at this? Is it because we are a young team?
Thank You
Scott
Jeff Gordon: That, and they still miss the skill of Erik Johnson, Andy McDonald, Paul Kariya, et al. That is a fast opponent and you need to have quick and accurate puck movement to counter it.
Kevin Kohler: How long until a big name free agent starting pitcher like Lowe will qualfy as "Lowe" hanging fruit? Fruit that hangs low on an apple tree is not less quality or even less in price, it is simply easier to get to. I believe a vote of the fans would be in favor os such a move. A big move would show Cardinal Nation that ownership appreciates 3 million in attendance for several years in a row. Some of us remember the seventies....oh my!
Jeff Gordon: The '06 World Championship was a nice sign of appreciation, no? And people whined about that team right up until the final out of the World Series.
Scott Rhein: Hello again Jeff, I have some more Blues questions. Next year when everyone is healthy again. What dirrection do you see the Blues heading in with their Defensemen? What is going to happen to Polak and Colaiacovo? Will Alex Pietrangelo get a shot? What is the status of Ian Cole. Is Wagner, Weaver and Woywitka doomed to Peoria? I am just curious how this is going to play out.
Thank You
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Polak is a keeper. Carlo appears to be a long-termer as well -- which is a happy surprise to me. Alex is a long-term, as is Erik. I like Jackman this year. After that . . . we'll see. Cole is a few years off. Woywitka and Weaver are depth guys. Wagner has fallen back.
Thom Snell: I see on MLB.com that Carp is talking to the Boston Globe about his pitching status?! Uh, why isn't he doing that interview with the PD?
thanks,
Just curious
Jeff Gordon: We've had a steady diet of Carpenter medical updates. None of them matter. Actually pitching - that matters.
Matt: Mr. Gordon:
In a recent PD article, you and others commented on how much it would cost to sign Pujols to an extension ($25 - $30 million in general). What is the probability that we resign him? If he is signed, what is the success history of similar teams investing so much in one player (would be about 25% of the budget at least)? Given that amount, wouldn't it be prudent to consider trading Pujols (despite angering the fans)? And if a trade were considered what kind of talent would this bring back assuming he was performing per usual? El Hombre is so unique that even considering this makes me gag, but there seems to be merit for consideration.
Jeff Gordon: If Albert becomes determined to test the market, then, yes, the Cards would have to trade him to get something back. That is why a contract extension should be offered after this season.
bowman1429: Any chance Tony Dungy is the "mystery" coaching candidate for the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: If Dungy exits Indy, it's to go home and spend time with his family.
Chris: Hey Gordo, hope you had a happy holiday season.
Here we go, Oddsmakers!
What are the odds the following guys are playing full time for the Blues next year?
Keith Tkachuk 50 percent
Andy MacDonald 90 percent
Paul Kariya 100 percent
Lars Eller 10 percent
Manny Legace 10 percent
Jay Mcclemment 80 percent
BJ Crombeen 90 percent.
DJ King 90 percent
As always thanks for the chat!
Jimmy M: I might be the only one but dont you think a Nomar Garciaparra type of player would fit well here in st. louis?? verteran, plays multiple positions.
Jeff Gordon: But the only place he could possibly get at bats is second base.
Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff, I have one last Blues question. I am want to know if I am a bad Blues fan if I do not want us to finish well this year. I would love to see John Tavares in a Blues uniform. I know the organization would love to make the playoffs and it would be good for buisness but I do not see us making it. Also, if the Blues do not go number one, how deep is this years draft? Is it worth trading some players away for picks?
Thank You for your time.
Scott
Jeff Gordon: I don't know if the draft is all that strong after the top two picks, Tavares and Hedberg
Flotrain: I would rather NOT listen (read) all the whining from most people about the (in)activity by MO. Still over 100+ free agents out there, some players like Michael Young are requesting trades, and OH YEAH it's not even mid-January. I don't think anybody saw Rolen for Glaus or Lohse coming in February last year... Who'd a thought Carlos Silva could get 4 yrs. $42 Mil, and Lohse got 1 yr, $4.2 mil. Crazy!... Anyways, LOT of time left, many transactions still to be done. Hate to see Miles go, but if Ryan/Barden/whoever can fill his role for millions less, so be it. Fuentes NEVER was going to come here. That was obvious from the beginning... Personally, I think if Kennedy is given the chance to JUST GO OUT THERE AND PLAY, he might give a solid (WALK) year effort. And, I still want to see Barton given a chance. I like that kid.....
Jeff Gordon: Big potential walk years for Ankiel, Greene and Kennedy. That bodes well for the offense.
James. Bridgeton: gordo! Out of all the remaining free agent starters out there, who do you think would be/could be in a red birds uniform this summer...if anyone.
Jeff Gordon: I'd like Perez, for the upside.
ramsfanfrom the bay: Good afternoon Gordo
I was wondering if we go after Rex Ryan, would it be possible that Terrel Shruggs come alone he is a free agent.....Spend some money Rams....
Jeff Gordon: Ryan may get some Ravens. Not sure about the top ones . . .
BillP: Hey Jeff, if the Cardinals make the Super Bowl (gulp), don't you see them getting blown out? I still can't believe this, but the Cards should send Plexico a "Happy New Year's Card" cause the Giants never did figure out how to continue on without him.
Jeff Gordon: Who knew losing a top receiver would gut a team, but apparently it did.
bay area RAM: Hola Gordo,
so, who is the mystery coach? i know, i know, it wouldn't be a mystery if you told me.
in your opinion (you may have already answered this question), don't you think bringing Haz back with Martz and Capers sound very intriguing? i think Martz won't have the ego trip after his first stint as HC since the FO personnel has changed. i also believe he can devise excellent ground games.
keep up the good work,
BAR
Jeff Gordon: I don't see Martz making this offense, in its current state, work the way he wants it to work. And Mad Mike would bring too much baggage with him.
MontanaCardinal: Michael Young?
Jeff Gordon: Longshot.
Christiana: why wouldnt we signs ben sheets to a one year, incentive laden deal? or is there any Kyle Lohses going to be hanging out there come spring training?
Jeff Gordon: Ben might do better than that, especially from Milwaukee -- which is hurting in the rotation.
Lt. Picklesnaps: Hey Gordo,
When you talk to Mozeliak do you get the feeling he actually believes in what he is saying or do you think that he is being 'handcuffed' by DeWitt or something/someone else?
Also, why is it that when Mozeliak is asked about the fan unrest that he comes off sounding like we are the problem since we have "high expectations?"
Are WE the problem?
Jeff Gordon: Not at all. The Cards want to contend every year. That is a fair goal for a team with good resources. And that is what Mozeliak is trying to do. He can't go out and spend silly money -- he is handcuffed to that extent -- but he really does see the value of playoff development.
ballhawk32: Hey Gordo:
Who would you like to see named as Rams next head coach? Also, who would you like to see them draft at No. 2?
Thanks for your input.
Jeff Gordon: Rex Ryan for coach. And rather than take Smith at No. 2, as I said earlier, I'd trade out of that and try to get two good first-round players -- a LB or CB, then an OT.
Lt. Picklesnaps: About the Rams coaching search;
Did Haslett ever try to help his friend Scott Linehan when the world was falling down around him or did he play spectator?
Jeff Gordon: Of course he tried to help, but they didn't always see eye to eye . . . to say the least.
Mike: If we were fortunate to get Spags from the Giants, who do you think he would pick for OC and DC?
Jeff Gordon: I'm sure he would prefer one of his assiztants to be the DC. As for the offense, he might be open to suggestions outside the Giants family. But it would be a ground-first guy.
Lt. Picklesnaps: About the Blues;
Is there any animosity within the Blues org. building towards Kariya because to this point he has been a bust of a FA signing?
Jeff Gordon: Disappointment, for sure, but I don't know how you could begrudge a guy for getting hurt. He was playing great this year until then.
Chris: I don't think the Blues have the consistency (or the healthy bodies) to seriously contend for a playoff spot this year. If Tkachuk is dealt, is it unreasonable to expect a first round pick in the 20s?
Jeff Gordon: That would be a great get for Walt, but it may optimistic. Look for a team like Boston to take a shot at him, though.
Mike: If Brian Dawkins is a free agent, we should pay him whatever it takes. He is the force of the Philly D and could teach our guys to play with passion and actually tackle...Your thoughts...
Jeff Gordon: Would he fill a need or what?
Chris S.: I think everyone would agree that Adam Kennedy needs to be gone. So, why aren't the Cards willing to trade him in a Tina Martinez-type trade, in which they basically give him away for a meaningless minor leaguer and pick up most of his salary? I'm to the point that I'm ready to start a website to raise money to pay his salary, just so the Cards will have no excuse to not release him.
Jeff Gordon: Kennedy isn't THAT big of an issue. He just wants to play everyday. And last year, his numbers suggested he should play more. All the guy did is hit .280, as he usually does.
erich_stlmo@yahoo.com: Hey Gordo what your thoughts about Warner making another run at a Super Bowl. I hate the Cardinals but I'll sure be rooting for them just because of Warner as I'm sure a lot of fans in St. Louis feel the same way. It's like 2001 again facing the Eagles again in an NFC championship.
Jeff Gordon: Good for Kurt. Class guy -- and he keeps proving skeptics wrong.
jon in kentucky: In your opinion don't the Rams need to be naming a coach now if it is going to a coach other than Haslett? The names will start dropping like flies if the Rams don't act quickly. It seems to me that Leslie Frazier and Haslett are the only serious candidates.
Jeff Gordon: Ryan is a serious candidate, too. But, yes, things have to happen quickly now -- and they will.
sam: Gordo, I've heard that the price for Ben Sheets has come down alot. Any chance our Cardinals make an offer?
Jeff Gordon: Unlikely, due to his medical history.
Hoolie: Gordo
Just wondering if you were still on Mo's bandwagon (or is it Curly or Groucho). He sure brings up memories of Dal Maxvill. Looks like Walt Jocketty can still get some things done. You can have all the Ivy League
boys, just give me a good baseball man that doesn't have to be the owners mouthpiece.
Jeff Gordon: Go out to the ballpark this week, tell me how the team looks on the field and then get back to me Monday.
larry wilson: Jeff
I personally feel Haslett is a viable candidate as the Rams next HC. Maybe we wouldn't be where we are today if the Rams brass had selected Haslett over Linehan as HC. But I completely understand how many Rams fans feel he's not the answer to getting this ship righted...that its time to clean house.
My question is whether Billy DeVaney - in light of the other coaching candidates from outside the organization - can really afford to hire Haslett based on the fact the he was part of the Rams downward spiral of the past few years? And do you really think DeVaney would EVER sign off on Mike Martz coming back here under any circumstances? Feels like he'd be playing Russian Roulette with his own career if you ask me.
Jeff Gordon: Haslett has a plan to turning this thing around and he could certainly make things better. He is not a terrible candidate. I would just prefer a new face.
ronjon: Will the cardinals at least sign one of the many rehabbing pitchers this off season? The mulder seems intriguing once again and at least if the cardinals signed him my wife would come to some games with me cause she thinks he is the hottest man in the world.
Jeff Gordon: On one level it is intriguing . . . but would the Cards really do that to poor Dave Duncan?
mikew22: Is there any chance the Rams have interest in drafting Chase Coffman in the second round given their glaring need for a tight end who can run routes and catch passes?
Jeff Gordon: With McMichael coming back, that may not be a good use of the second-round pick.
Lt. Picklesnaps: Hey Gordo;
In your opinion is the Lohse signing looking alittle above market value now?
Also, assuming the answer is Yes, then could it be possible that that is the reason Mozeliak keeps saying that this market is hard to read and is causing them to approach other FAs with some apprehension now?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, it does. Imagine that, the Cards getting needled for overspending.
michael: I realize second and short have been low priority positions for this team in the past. Having to fill both positions on an annual basis seems to be a constant struggle and thus counter-productive. Why doesn´t STL commit to a multi-year contract for someone who is willing and can play the position for years to come? Especially since there is no one in the minors that seems to be able to fill those roles in the near future.
Jeff Gordon: Fair 'Nuff. Kozma may not be the long-term answer at shortstop. If Greene comes around at the plate, the Cards would be well-advised to extend him. He has a nice glove and the team will have internal third base candidates going forward.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
What's the insider on Jose Oquendo as a manager? Would he be considered a players manager? A thinker (La Russa) or let his guys play? If TLR moves on, what are the three names (depending on firings, etc. I know) that we will hear most often?
Jeff Gordon: Jose is tremendous respected, but managing the Cards is a HUGE job. Can he handle being the face of such a prominent franchise? The baseball stuff he can handle.
Jason: Greetings Gordo,
Any thoughts on Ron Rivera being the mystery canidate? Or why his nmae has not been out there for jobs around the league?
J Gray
Jeff Gordon: Ron got some early interviews, didn't wow teams and then saw his career slide back a bit. Now he is back on the way up.
Moleebo: Hi Gordo,
What do your investigative instincts tell you about who is going to end up where in the NFL coaching version of musical chairs?
Jeff Gordon: If Ryan lands with the Jets, that leaves Spags, Frazier and Haslett as the frontrunners here. My crystal ball is pretty cloudy.
Kiko Sanchez: Glad the Rams aren't rushing this interview process.
Do you know how the interviews work? Who besides Devaney is in the room?
and Why doesn't he interview in Saint Louis?
Jeff Gordon: There are two stages. Billy leads the first stage, then the second stage is in LA with Chip, Lucia, John Shaw and Stan Kroenke weighing in. That does slow it down a bit.
Todd from Michigan: Hi Gordo I was wondering if the mystery coach was Jim Harbaugh did he sign the extension for 3 years at Stanford? Thank you Gordo.
Jeff Gordon: Harbaugh had reportedly agreed to a contract extension, but I don't know if that has been finalized.
justin: When will STL people realize that Warner is no longer here? He had some good years here and some not so good years. Please move on!
Jeff Gordon: I, for one, will not.
branimir9000: And now for something completely different: will the Rams make any uniform changes for 2009? I'd like to see the old white and blue for a game or two.
Or for kicks, red on white to give it to the Bidwells.
Also, could someone suggest that they put the whole horn logo on, and not have it broken off under the face mask wire near the eye line?
I figure any other question about coaching I ask would be redundant.
Just hire someone before they are snatched away!
Thanks Gordo and STLToday.
Jeff Gordon: I'll pass that along . . .
ramsfaninsteelercountry: Gordo,
I wanted to get your take on the possibility of Martz coming back as O-Coordinator...I happen to be in the minority it appears of thinking it would be tremendously successful. Here's why...
1)Martz would help the offense's confidence by instilling the fear of being able to strike from anywhere on the field. I realize there is a risk- reward to this point but i also believe that it's time for bulger to earn his money and prove that given the right tools and play-calling he can start leading this offense to touchdowns and not field goals.
2) With the rams certain to draft a quarterback of the future no one is better at developing and demanding precision from a QB than martz.
3) After shortened stays in DET and SF, i think Martz realizes the importance of establishing the run and he does possess one of the more creative set of running plays in the league. His problem has always been ratios not whether he can develop the run game.
4)Salary, performance, value-wise I think he the rams would be better off trading holt and signing bruce to a one year contract to help the young wideouts develop their route running and give them a reliable possesion reciever.
Let me know what you think?
Jeff Gordon: Unfortunately, I don't know that Mad Mike would the tools here to go all out on offense. I believe a more basic approach would be better in the near term.
branimir9000: I see Lawrence McCutcheon was part of the search team. Speaking of ex-Rams, any chance of old QB James Harris coming aboard in some capacity since his departure from the Jags?
Jeff Gordon: Let's see what happens with the coaching search.
Todd from Michigan: Hi Gordo and thank you for taking the time.
Jeff I was wondering what would make Rex Ryan pick the Rams over the Jets(brand new stadium , great fanbase, more attractive job.)Secondly I have heard Spags has interviewed poorly twice and should we be scarred if the Lions turn him down to coach here?
Jeff Gordon: I worry about a guy interviewing poorly -- here he would have to command the attention of a whole organization.
Todd from Michigan: Gordo was wondering in your estimation if you give us your percentages on possible coaches for Haslett, Spagnola, Ryan, Frazier, Harbaugh. Thank you Jeff
Jeff Gordon: That's impossible to do. Right now, Frazier is in great shape. Let's see if Ryan is still on the board after his chat with the Jets.
branimir9000: Byron Leftwich.
Worth a shot?
Jeff Gordon: Yes.
Joel Koch: Just caught your answer to my question on Young. Why should the Rangers pick up some of his contract? Teams may not be inclined to deal a good package of players for $62 million and $15 million deferred. If they would pick up enough to make him a $10 million annual player and only $7.5 million deferred, teams would be able to deal a better package of players.
And Jon Garland? Yes or no, or will we Lohse him?
Jeff Gordon: Garland could still be there, IF the Dodgers don't go get him.
Ed H: Any update on Rex Ryan and Sapag's..Any update on the possible hiring of Mike Williams as V.P Pro Personnel? What is Mike Williams thought of in league circles? Any details would be great. Thx
Jeff Gordon: Williams is viewed as an up and comer. For Devaney to interview him, he would have to be. Billy is all business.
Petey123: Jeff, do you know the what the plans are to upgrade the dome?
Jeff Gordon: Better sound, better video boards, natural lighting through windows by the roof - there are some things in the works.
Ed H: Does Rex Ryan have to lose in the playoffs before confirming he has agreed to become a HC???
Jeff Gordon: Officially agree or agree to agree? That could be the important distinction.
bobincorona: Jeff,
Any idea who this "mystery" candidate is? Seems like some smoke and mirrors to me.
Also has Martz interviewed for a OC position with any other team?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: I don't know of anybody else looking at Mad Mike right now. As for the mystery man, I expect there is one. Jim Thomas is a great reporter.
BluesCardsTigers: Hey Gordo!
It seems like clubs throughout MLB are taking it easy this offseason to lower the price on most of the players still available. Good news for the Cardinals, right? Could a lot of the available free agents fall into the price range of the Cardinals in the next two months? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Yes, guys will fall in line.
Ray Ray Rockafeller: Gordo,
Do you think the Cardinals will pursue any of the plethera of young pitchers on the Yanks and Sox that have been push further down the depth charts with all their signings? i.e. Clay Buckholz, Phil Hughes, Ian (some last name,) etc.
thanks,
Ray
Jeff Gordon: Ankiel for Hughes?
dropzonefastpitch: Gordo, ...Haz has said he has a plan to turn things around, ..with a few free agents, and a solid draft..Do the Rams have the Cap space for the free agents to make a difference and do you think he could make this current team a contender next season?..Thanks
Jeff Gordon: They don't have a great cap situation, which is why it's so important for the next coach to get a lot of out of the returning players.
dropzonefastpitch: Your around the game, and you hear alot regarding these up and coming coaches, ...in your opinion, give us the best guy for the Rams...
Ryan, Frazier or Spags?
Jeff Gordon: Ryan.
HEG: Gordo earlier you responded to one of my statements about the Mizzou basketball season & your statement was that Mizzou would win 20 games & make the tournament; if they play the rest of the season the manner they played Saturday they would be hard pressed to win another game this season- they settle for a perimeter game and are terrible shooters; they are lacking a point guard and inside game. Re; the Rams I hope they will draft a player in the skilled positions- they have wasted so many choices on lineman, LB., corner's. Re; the baseball cardinals: I go along with their approach on waiting to see how the young players respond in spring training; hopefully they have addressed the left side of the bullpen. Do you agree with any of these statements?
Jeff Gordon: We hit the other subjects. As for Mizzou . . . yikes! That was a terrible first half. I did like the comeback, which showed character, but that was a scary. There won't even be a NIT if that keeps up.
bobincorona: Hey Jeff,
Not questioning JT's reporting skills, maybe the mystery man is Russ Grimm.
Why haven't the Rams talked to him anyways. He's a future HOF'er, was voted to the 80's all decade team while playing for Joe Gibbs and comes from the coaching tree of Bill Cowher. Seems to me the guy would be a natural. He'd command respect in the locker room and bring a no nonsense approach to the team.
Jeff Gordon: Russ is getting some more play right now. His head coaching stock is back up - and good for him.
dropzonefastpitch: Hi Gordo, ..what's your thoughts on the rumor that was going around regarding a potential coaching candidate not wanting to interview with the rams due to the feeling that everything was set up for Haz to return?..Any ideas on the truth? and where that might have came from?..Thanks for your time, ..
Jeff Gordon: Haslett IS a legit candidate. That could have been a turnoff. I know that at least one candidate was turned off by having to interview with the owners in LA.
donaldworrell: TLR does not want a base stealer (like hundson, roberts) to lead off. Reason Pujouls bats third. If you had a base stealer in the lead off postion you would need to move Pujouls to the 4th spot. TLR will not do that.
Jeff Gordon: Tony wouldn't mind getting the leadoff guy to second for the No. 2 hitter. Then the other side has to pitch to that guy or face Pujols with two guys on.
ronjon: Leslie Frazier is my pick for the new head coach. I think he can get the most out of atogwe, bartell and little tye hill. He seems to have great success as a DB coach. Has anyone else brought this up?
Jeff Gordon: He is getting good reviews from inside and outside the organization.
Jeepster: Jeff: So you're no longer prepared to assess Mozeliak's job at the beginning of spring training? You're no giving him "August or so" eh?
Jeff Gordon: The roster will keep changing between now and August -- and beyond. It never stops. Some changes will happen during spring training, once the staff sees what it has or doesn't have. Then the season starts and more changes will occur, based on injuries, player progress or regression, the success or failure of prospects on the farm and so forth. Then other teams start to fold, opening up other opportunities.
jackrabbit: Do you have any thoughts or speculation on who the Cards offered (2 pitchers and 1 position player)in the Greene transaction? I understand that the Padres have until April 1 to make their decision.
Jeff Gordon: It was nobody on the big league roster at the end of the season, apparently.
ronjon: Jeff you need to show jim and joe how to answer questions. You are like henry ford cranking out these answers
Jeff Gordon: Let's hope the wheels don't come off.
Alex Ferrario: Hey Gordo,
What is your outlook next year for the Blues in between the pipes.
-thanks
Jeff Gordon: Pull for Ben Bishop, because what we've seen this season hasn't been good enough.
roger from lake tahoe: Gordo, all this talk about not going to cardinal games because of unhappiness with management is just silly. It's cutting off your nose to spite your face. Of course they will still go to games. Never the less, the management seems to not all be on the same page, therefore contradictory statements like TLR wanting a closer and Mo saying the pen is fine the way it is. Do you think they need a change in their PR dept? Do you think the fans simply want a plan? This team should clarify their strategy much better than low hanging fruit. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: The owner and the GM are on the same page. They are going with player development over free agency. It's up to Tony to adapt to that.
ronjon: Ok since you are going thru the questions so fast. What are your thoughts on glavine to the cardinals.
Jeff Gordon: After Smoltz left Atlanta, anything is possible. If he is throwing well, though, I have to believe Atlanta locks him in.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Is this close to what these guys are looking at?
Ben Sheets...1 year, $9 million
Randy Wolf...2 years, $16 million
Oliver Perez...2 years, $19 million
Derek Lowe...3 years, $40 million
Jon Garland...2 years, $15 million
Given those numbers, who are YOU most likely to sign?
Jeff Gordon: Those are decent rates. I would take Wolf or Perez at those bucks.
James H.: Will the Cards go after a power hitting OF next offseason with Ankiel and Glaus likely to depart? We'll need to make up for hat lost power, right?
Jeff Gordon: The team will need more power in 2010, yes. I don't see either of those guys here.
therealdealankiel: Russ Springer...any chance he's back?
Jeff Gordon: I'd love to see him back, but the team is stacked up at RH relief right now.
Big B: Mr Gordon, What is your best guess on how soon the coaching search will be concluded and their is a new man at Rams Park?
Jeff Gordon: Unless the choice is Ryan and his team keeps winning, I can see the Rams moving quickly.
Ken Keutzer: I am curious as to how good Coldby Rasmus is supposed to be. Rick Ankiel & Ryan Ludwick had very solid years both offensively & defensively. Is he supposed to be better than either of them?
Jeff Gordon: Different, but in the same category, Fewer homers, better D, more stolen bases.
grwlvster: Hi Joe,
Do you think our new GM is in over his head? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: No.
Matt: Congrats to Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice! I don't want to rain on Rickey's parade.. and I don't have any reason to think he shouldn't be in the hall of fame, but why hasn't there been speculation as to whether or not he did steroids? The guy played until he was 45 or 46 and all the while was a brick house. He did play on the same team as Mac and Canseco for a number of years.. Mac is being persecuted for his perceived guilt, but yet not a peep from the media who is doing this to him about Rickey. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: If Rice gets in, why not Dawson? To me, he was a better player.
therealdealankiel: Will agents even consider letting their guy sign a two year deal right now?
It seems they would rather go Jeff Weaver/Kyle Lohse and take a one year gamble.
Jeff Gordon: Some guys will be left standing when the music stops, so they will have to take short money and hope for better days.
BluesCardsTigers: Is Petro a concern for JD? He couldnt get very good ice time at the WJ's... And the Blues seem to play well for a few games and then fall off again. What do you think is more likely: The Blues put things together and play well the rest of the season and get close to making playoffs, or they put up the white flag soon and play for Tavares?
Jeff Gordon: They won't "play for Tavares" with Murray coaching.
therealdealankiel: What is Colby's upside/downside, assuming he spends some time in the majors?
Can he become a 35/100 guy like Jimmy? Or is he more of a 20/75 guy with 20 SB's?
Jeff Gordon: Somewhere in between -- 25 homers, 90 RBI.
Kevin: Jeff,
On a 1-no to 5-likely could you tell us the odds..
Ohman to Cards?
Springer to Cards?
Lyon to Cards?
Jon Garland to Cards?
Ankiel for Phil Hughes?
Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: The first four are 1s, the latter . . . maybe a 2 or 3.
dropzonefastpitch: Gordo, ..I just saw on another site that the Rams will meet with Spags on Thursday, ..it said it came from St Louis Post, ..any confirmation?..Thanks
Jeff Gordon: that is being reported elsewhere on our site.
That's it for today. See you next Monday.
