Steve: Hi Jeff, I know you got a question last week regarding the upgrades to the Edward Jones Dome, but we've all "heard" the plans again and again. We want to "see" the plans. Where are the renderings/photos of what's to come? I mean, with these upgrades costing $30 million and having a completion deadline of July 31, 2009, you'd think there would be something given to the media/public to create some buzz!
Jeff Gordon: I couldn't locate any renderings with a quick Internet search, but here are the basics: New video board, additional luxury suites to replace the auxiliary press box, new video boards, lighter paint job, suite improvements.

DisCard: Hey from Florida,

They seem to be making your chat harder to find.

Put me on the side of the ledger that still believes this can be a successful off-season. I keep hearing about how the Cards paid too much for Loshe. He seems to be to be the first recent example of a guy smart enough to both learn from Duncan and stay. That's worth a great deal. With a better bullpen and a real spring training, I think he might have won 20 last season.

I see know reason that Loshe, Wainwright and Wellemeyer can't go +20 for W/L's. They have at least the same support as last season and maybe more to come. Even without Carpenter, this is a decent staff. Of course, another starter would be nice and I'm confident we will see one. It wouldn't surprise me if they wait until Carpenter throws. If he can start, the priorities might change. It looks like a buyers market to me, so play out the string.

Since the Cards still hold all their trading chips, don't you think it likely they still make a move and Mo is just posturing?

Do you think Duncan had any say in the lefty relief that was acquired?
Jeff Gordon: Dave's opinion carries some weight, but Cards scouts build a file on everybody in the game. That helps Mozeliak establish value for free agents and trades.

Lohse's signing was looking a bit high until Lowe got his money from Atlanta. That should allow Perez and Wolf to get more money -- and that will justify Lohse's deal.

Tim: Why not Ankiel for Matt Cain?
Jeff Gordon: Is such a deal really there? With the Cards unwilling to give Ankiel a long-term deal, that sets the stage for a possible deal. If somebody other than Ankiel gets traded, then Ankiel might get a long-term extension offer here.

Tim: So whos your best guess on OC and DC next year? What kind of relationship does Spags have with Romeo Crennel If any. Is there any chance he gets the DC job?
Jeff Gordon: Chris Palmer got some early mentions, but the competition for these coaches is pretty fierce. It'll be an interesting couple of days.

Tim: I really think the Rams should take Crabtree in the draft and heres to state my case. There is plenty of OT talent out there this year in the draft but not that franchise cant miss LT that jake Long was last year so unless we trade down I just think tackle we take would be a reach. Crabtree is going to be our next Torry Holt, a franchise offensive stud for many years that WR core woulbe be scary with Crabree Avery and Burton. Gross is looking like hes going to his free agency I say sign him mabye draft an OT Later in the first round if we can get one for Holt or in later rounds and have him compete with Pace Grecoo and Bell at guards then draft Mack in the second round and have him be our franchise center. Draft mabye Grahma harrel in the 3rd round and develop him and thats an offense that can really click in a few years. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: After watching Fitzgerald carry the Cardinals to the Super Bowl, the idea of drafting a bigger, more explosive receiver seem more appealing. I doubt the Rams will go this way, given their need to rebuild from the lines out, but it's a thought.

whirlwind31: Hey Gordo,
Devaney has spoken about filling the middle of the roster, in other words adding depth with solid players who aren't superstars. Are there any potential free agents who fit that profile and you think the Rams might be later interested in acquiring?
Jeff Gordon: The P-D will analyze the free-agent market as it pertains to the Rams once we have a better idea of which players on the list -- and which assistant coaches that Spagnuolo hires. I'm guessing that the staff will have a big say on potential mid-range gets.

Vinny: Gordo,

All around great job by the Rams Execs. This should make all us Rams Fans excited for the first time in awhile. Chip and Billy kept true to their words and I think they brought back honesty and integrity to this organization. Spags is the man!

Now, if we can only get rid of bulger!!
Jeff Gordon: Give Devaney credit. He assembled a nice list of candidates, then settled on his guy in a quick-yet-orderly fashion.

Billy S: I was wondering what day the Rams set aside to introduce their new coach to the media and fans. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: That news conference was at 11 a.m. Check elsewhere on the site for details.

Zac, TN: Gordo,

I like our GM we have now and he has made some decent moves since he took over the job. The thing I don't understand with him is that when Jocketty was on the job he would not sit back and let the Cubs take our former players that were fan favorites and still not attempt to sign anyone. Jocketty would have been deep in conversation with Ben Sheets right who is sitting back waiting. If Mo wants to be a hero he needs to sign Ben quick before the Cubs get him! What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Sheets has a long history of pitching injuries. Other teams have taken a look at him and passed. The Cards have been down this road too many times. Any deal with Ben would have to be incentive-based.

Tim: Any word on how Motte is doing with his second pitch?
Jeff Gordon: We'll see what he has in spring training. He'll have an interesting six- or seven-week stretch down in Jupiter.

ueaces: Hi Gordo,
Thanks for doing these chats...you do a great job with them!

This may seem like a strange thought, but if I had to decide whom I thought would have a better year this coming season between Russ Springer and Izzy I would chose Russ by far. Now, even though he doesn't have all the expereince that Izzy has as a closer, I just can't help but think he would be the more effective pitcher. My contention is if the Cards are contemplating in making Izzy the "bridge" this season as they await for Motte and Perez to assume the role as closer, I think they are looking at the wrong pitcher. Any thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I don't mind Izzy coming back on a make-good deal, an incentive-based deal based on his number of appearances. It would be interesting to see what he could do with a fresh start. But I agree: Springer would be a more valuable addition. He would be a great fit down there with the kids.

KENO: Hey Gordo. Three quick ones for ya.

1. Is it realistic to think that Spags can turn around Tye Hill like he did to Corey Webster?

2. In your opinion what can Spags bring to this young D-line? (I imagine Chris/Howie Long are excited about his hiring)

3. Will anything be done to the sound system in the Dome with the upgrades? Also is there anything that is being done (in the upgrades) that wasn't previously announced, or anything your excited about?

Guess that's actually four.

THANKS JEFF!
Jeff Gordon: I hope the sound is better. I haven't been convinced yet that The Ed will be significantly better, but we'll see.

Spagnuolo will make the "D" better by creating more ways to apply pass pressure. He is a pretty creative guy.

As for Hill, we'll see. That guy really lost his confidence. The Rams will make him earn his spot back. Look for upgrades at corner, as you will see at other positions.

ballhawk32: Gordo:
I'll start off by saying I don't mind the Spagnoulo hiring. I would have been fine with Frazier, Spag, or Ryan. However, given the big name coaches who will be available next year, I thought it would have been wiser to keep Haslett around for one more year. We give him a full year to try and turn this around. Odds are he probably wouldnt, and then we could go after either Shanahan, Cowher, Gruden, or Holmgren. I know its all water under the bridge at this point, but did anyone consider this????
Jeff Gordon: Given the uncertain ownership future with the Rams, Chip wasn't likely to attract one of the big guns lining up for 2010. I believe the team needed change NOW and he did well to land Spagnuolo, one of the rising stars of the business. Devaney's relationship with him was vital to getting this done.

drelboc: Hello Gordo;

I don't see how the Cards could break camp with six outfielders on the 25 man roster unless they have in mind to use Mather and Schumacher in the infield as well as the outfield. If Rasmus makes the club, TLR has said that he does not want him to sit. So it seems that most of the playing time in the outfield will go to Rasmus, Ankiel and Ludwick. If Duncan turns out to be healthy and has a good spring I think the Cards will make a deal. How do you see the outfield mix shaking out Gordo?

Thank you Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: At the winter warm-up, both Mather and Schumaker talked about the prospect of getting infield work. Wouldn't it be wild to the towering Mather at second base? He played shortstop and third base earlier in his pro career and Skip played shortstop in college.

Tackleberry: Do you think having Spagnuolo as the Rams' new leader makes this a more desirable location for free agents?
Jeff Gordon: This hiring does add credibility, yes. He and Devaney will command respect.

Tackleberry: After watching Linehan tab Olson and Haslett as coordinators, a regime that failed mightily, how improtant is it that Spagnuolo make the right choice for these posts? Especially with the offensive coordinator?
Jeff Gordon: These are huge hires and the competition will be fierce. But Spagnuolo will still run the defense, but he if brought back, say. Peter Giunta, fans shouldn't lament that. In the Giants atmosphere, Peter was highly successful.

ctramsfan: Jeff, now that the Rams have their coach in place, are they going to make a hard push right now to re-sign Bartell, Atogwe, Craft, Romberg, and Goldberg? I believe re-signing these players is essential to keeping depth along the o-line and keeping our playmakers in the secondary.

Thanks for your time
Jeff Gordon: Craft was a Haslett guy, so we'll see what the new coaches think. Jason did play awfully well for a guy pulled off the street. We'll see what the next offensive staff thinks or Romberg and Goldberg. Of the the holdover coaches, by the way, Steve Loney might be one of the more likely guys to stay.

PolderBear: Hey Gordo,

Setting the clock to your chat again; thanks.

Some quick Rams questions about the business side: who's in charge of negotiating and setting up the salaries and contracts now? I'm assuming there's someone in place, seeing that the Spags contract got proceeded quickly, and that there shouldn't be any problems with assistants signings and any free agents? Any plans to bring in a cap person, or is there someone in house that'll take on this responsibility (like the "Throat slasher", or whatever he calls himself)?

Speaking of which, any ideas about who on the current coaching staff may stay, and how much dead money is tied up in assistant coaches who will get the axe?

Thanks,

PB
Jeff Gordon: We'll see what happens with the cap-management post. That is to be determined. A few of the coaches (Saunders, Valero, Loney) have deals beyond this year. There will be some deal money.

George: Hi Gordo. There has been so much speculation lately regarding how the coaching search went down, can you give us the straight info? Was Garret really Devaney's first choice? If not, was it Spags or someone else? How close was Garret to getting the job? Lastly, when do you think Spags will have his total coaching staff filled out?
Jeff Gordon: When you consider the professional relationship that Spagnuolo and Devaney had, it's hard to imagine that he was a No. 2 or No. 3 choice. The more you look at it, the more you think it was his job to lose. He was well-regarded by several teams.

Tim: Do you think the Rams could get sheppard for a 4th rounder? Id take it and plug him in with bartell and Atogwe(hopefully) and a free agent aquisition saftey mabye Jermaine Phillips
Jeff Gordon: I'm not sure this team will move picks for players. The Rams need to score big in this draft and build some numbers through free agency.

Tim: WHo would you like to see being our big run suffing DT next year? my pick Raji id we get the oppurtunity. Thats solid with a line of Long Carriker Raji and Julius Peppers(haha just kidding) but a combo of Adeyenju and Hall and Ryan subbing in. that would work out big time with the youth and our new defensive guru as a coach with his schemes
Jeff Gordon: I have no preference at the run-stuffing, just that the team add more beef. Glover hit the end this year. Maybe Adeyanju can keep eating and lifting and play a bigger role inside.

Donsods: Gordo--any handicapping on who Spags will choose as DC & OC? Does Saunders stand a chance? Also, BD interviewed the guy from SF for the Pro Personnel position--any word on that?
Jeff Gordon: I would expect Williams to get that job, but we have no official word on that.

Tim: How about Witherspoon At OLB with Karlos Dansby then Vilma at MLB I know I know he got in trouble but hes a pure MLB thats too good to pass up. Thats a young linebacking core with lots of promise.
Jeff Gordon: The linebacker corps has to be a top priority. Spagnuolo made his mark in Philly coaching that great group there. And this group here is a long way from that. Other than Will, I'm not sure there are keepers here.

Tim: This whole Cano thing, how long ago was this? Didnt Mo even try to offer Ankiel? Does he even know what hes doing?(lol just playing with ya Gordo)But seriously did his name come up Id still like to see maby Ankiel Todd and Kennedy for Cano and Hughes. Although Id still rather see Roberts I think he brings alot more to the table
Jeff Gordon: KENNEDY HAS NOT TRADE VALUE. He and his $4 million deal are here. La Russa will go to great lengths to get other guys at bats, as we'll see this spring when guys like Mather and Schumaker take ground balls. (I've always dismissed the notion of Skip playing second, but The Skipper isn't afraid to push the envelope.)

Jason: Hi Gordor, Do you have any idea who Spagnuolo might be choosing as his offensive and defensive coordinator?

Thanks
Jason
Jeff Gordon: Early speculation: Chris Palmer on offense, Sean McDermott or Peter Giunta on defense.

ramsfaninsteelercountry: Gordo,
Don't mean to play devil's advocate because I think the Rams made an excellent choice. But with quite a few holdovers needed from the current roster to make this turnaround, wouldn't frazier's experience with multiple defensive fronts have been helpful in utilizing Carriker, Long, and Victor in a 3-4 hybrid?
Jeff Gordon: Leslie would have been a great pick, too. Steve's challenge will making more from the current group, which bears no resemblance to what he had in Philly and New York. He must adapt to what he has.

Tim: Do you think the Rams might look at Vernon Carey? If Where gonna try to make a run based offense he would be a good fit the dude is a load, 350 pounds, not bad.
Jeff Gordon: Carey drove up stock, for sure, with a strong finish. But the Dolphins are said to be focused on re-signing him.

ramfan4ever: Gordo,
Any word on who Spags is considering for his Coordinators, haven't heard any word on the subject so far, and wasn't it great to see K. Warner kickin Philly's butt, awesome!
Jeff Gordon: How about Kurt? So much for being washed up . . .

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

What do you think Cashman is smoking and how much do you think he paid for it? I heard we are looking to trade Ankiel and our starting point is Sabathia and a prospect...
Jeff Gordon: Good one.

ramsfaninsteelercountry: Gordo,
It seems as though quite a few teams are attempting to mold themselves into power running teams. So don't you think that the choice of OC is crucial so that as defenses adapt and shut this down the rams are able to adjust creatively(anti-Linehan)and go vertical with the young wideouts they have in place?
Jeff Gordon: It's more than the tactics. The new offensive staff has to create better execution. Run block! Read the run blocks! Hang onto the football! Good execution puts the offense in favorable down-and-distance spots all day -- and that makes the play-calling much easier.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

I'm stuck up here in Wisconsin, thanks for the weekly updates. What is the general tone at the Warmup? It seems like Colby took his off-season very seriously, and sounds like Carp is working hard too. How do you see the pen shaking out? I'm not asking for your closer scenario, but with Kinney, McClellan, Franklin, Perez and Motte, it looks like there is no definitive closer, and most are too good to use in a 5th-6th inning mop up role. Who do you see as our primary 7th inning guy and who is our primary setup man?
Jeff Gordon: Those roles are are to be determined, for sure. Perez's ankle issue is a concern because if that does linger, it could really mess up his spring training. Keep an eye on that.

Rasmus and Ludwick muscled up over the winter, so let's see if that translate into more power come the exhibition season.

Eric: Gordo, What exactly happened with Garrett on Friday night / Saturday morning...? There have been reports that Garrett was actually Devaney's first choice but that his contract demands where too high and that tipped the scales over to Spags. Any truth to that...?

What exactly did Devaney see is Garrett that had him close to landing the Rams HC job...?
Jeff Gordon: Jason is making head-coaching money as the O.C. in Dallas, so I'm sure he didn't sign cheap. But he wasn't the leading guy. Just look at the background that Devaney and Spagnuolo share.

got2golfjk: It seems self-defeating to me that teams hire a guy for his " specialty " , be it Linehan for his Offensive creativity , or Spags , for his defensive prowess , and then , HE in turn has to go out and bring in someone else to perform those very duties HE excelled at. And, as H/C's, new guys are overwhelmed by the number of duties they are faced with , and find they don't have the time to devote to that particular area of their expertise.Isn't there some position that could be created that would take some of the seemingly mundane responsibilities off the incoming Coach's shoulders? ( i.e., Hotel reservations , flights , Camp locations ??) You would know far better than I about the number of " little things "that occupy a Coach's time that might very well be handled by another,Jim,
wouldn't it make sense to try to eliminate these things from the Coach's sched so that he could devote more of his time to the bvery thiong he was hired to do ??
Jeff Gordon: Good question. When Dick Vermeil was at his best here, he had Mike White handle many of these the extra duties that come with head coaching. Let's see what Steve does as a first-time head coach. How will he structure the job?

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Does Rick Ankiel have any opposition to moving back to right field (presuming Colby breaks camp as our CF)? Rick certainly has a chance to create some value as the only big bat in next year's FA class that could also play center...then again he can really show off that arm in right...
Jeff Gordon: Right field is the place where Ankiel could star for five, six years. His arm would be featured there, as would his range. In CF, he is still a little raw.

Bob Chappell: Congratulations coach. When do you think that you will have your coaching staff in place? Have you set a time table?
Jeff Gordon: Steve will work furiously on that this week. Step by step, he'll put his staff together. We'll have news soon.

Joe Stafford: Hello Jeff, Can you believe it, after all the nay-sayers spouting off the Rams wanted to go on the cheap for a coach, we actuaslly land Steve Spagnuolo? Finally a defensive coach that isn't going to put up with all the stuff that has been going on here the last few years! Kudo's to Chip Rosenbloom and Billy Devaney
Jeff Gordon: As Bernie wrote, Chip did right by St. Louis. He stepped up to the plate. And Devaney came through.

Aaron F: Pujols is under team control until 2011. Is there thought of locking him up now instead of waiting until 2010-2011? With huge signings like Texiera, Pujol's price tag will only surely go up between now and then.

I say we make sure he is a life-long Cardinal by locking him up with a 10 year 300 million dollar contract. Agree?
Jeff Gordon: A $300 million deal? Good luck getting DeWitt to sign off on that. He has made lots of long-term commitments in his time, but I don't see him signing Albert until 2021.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, What was that Jason Garrett friday trip? I have read reports that he was the first choice but priced himself out of a job. Any inside on that? I would have rather had Mike Martz then this guy, per our blowout of Dallas this year with his so called vaunted offense against our woeful defense. I think they got it right by hiring Spag's
Jeff Gordon: Garrett finished no better than third for this job. He wanted to take a look at the facility, so came in a got a look. But he was no more than a deep fallback here.

WPB Redbird: El Gordorino-

I'm going over the lineup for the 2009 season and I guess you could describe the emotion as uneasy. Yes STL LLC and Billy D have taken some shots from the fans and I think...rightfully so. (I won't even mention Johnny Mo because he's proven to all of us what an idiot he is)...I guess I did mention it, huh?

Anyway, this lineup, who's leadoff? Shu? His .359 OBP puts him in the top...60 of baseball last year. Albeit, 3 members of the Redbirds are ahead of him but obviously not lead off candidates in Pujols, Glaus and Luddy. Khalil's career OBP is an enemic .304 and not a base stealing threat.

Overall, I don't see this team as improved. In fact, I'm convinced they've got backwards. Obviously, they have to play the games in the 2009 season and I'm not writing them off, but based on what I see on paper, I'm not so sure.

Our outfield may be "balanced"...but what about health? Shu and Luddy played 150+ games last year...(first time for either). Duncan and Ankiel's health issues have been well documented.

Combine these factors with a WEAKER bullpen, another year of a bubblegum in the hole rotation...in addition to the streaky tendencies of our lineup, Glaus, Kennedy, Ankiel, Greene, Duncan...are they going to come through with a clutch hit when the offense requires it?

It just seems to me that there are too many gaps to be filled to expect anything more than an 83 win season.

Maybe we can put all our eggs in one basket and hope for Carpenter to be healthy again. Sounds like a flawless plan to me. Who needs low laying fruit when you can sit idly by and do nothing at all?

Not amused in West Palm Beach-

WPB Redbird
Jeff Gordon: There is still money to spend and multiple assets to deal moving forward. There are lots of questions, obviously, and that is why Mozeliak is playing it out. What, really, can Duncan, Ankiel, Carpenter, Perez, Motte, et al really do this year? We'll see. Lots of X-factors there.

EdTheRamsFan: Dear Jeff
I would like five names in the free agency even though (Haynesworth) will probably franchised. I would like to see a tough defensive front seven team and a strong center for the offense, get Napolean Harris (UFA, MLB Vikings), Albert Haynesworth (UFA, DT Titans), Matt Birk (UFA, C Vikings), James Butler (UFA, SS Giants), Kendrick Allen (UFA, DT Vikings) move Adam Carricker to DE (These moves would make us big and more athletic up front and move Little to Strong Side linebacker or backup DE and use the first pick on an OT. James Butler is a Giant and Kendrick Allen is an ex-Giant, this would help HC Spags alot! Do you agree or disagree?
Jeff Gordon: There are some ambitious notions, including playing Little as a stand-up player at this late point in his career. I'd be OK with Carriker as a 3-4 DE, but we'll see what happens with this scheme. And with so many needs to fill, remember that Devaney is looking to add depth in the free agent market versus spending lots of money on one or two guys.

1965 ram: WHAT IS THE # 1 PLACE YOU WANT TO ATTACK FIRST AS THE NEW HEAD COACH AND WHY
Jeff Gordon: Tough question. Needs everywhere! There are good players in every area and needs in every area. But you can never go wrong strengthening both lines.

PC-not: Thanks for taking the time for the chat. Even though Ludwick had a great year and good health in 2008, I am concerned about his durability due to the screws, etc. that apparently hold him together. His value likely will never be higher- do you think the team is open to offers for him?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, the Cards have pondered trade options for the reasons you mentioned. This is why the team is not going long-term on his contract, too.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, usually when a new coach is hired they get some of their previous team, who would be on your wish list from the Giants?
Jeff Gordon: Safety James Butler would be a guy worth targeting.

Cardinals101: Thanks for your time.

What is the odds that Rasmus makes it to the starting lineup after spring training? And could Wallace be up this year? Is it true the cardinals inquired about Cano? Do you think that Wainwright for Cano is a fair trade?
Jeff Gordon: Wainwright for Cano? Why would the Cards trade their ace pitcher for an infielder?

Wallace ought to play in the majors this year, by September at the latest. And Rasmus, as a potential lead-off hitter, could make the team out of spring training IF he hits.

WPB Redbird: El Gordorino-

I think if you look at the hits and runs scored last year...STL was 2nd in baseball in team hits....but 12th in runs. Timely runs were not produced...and the bullpen couldn't go a day without giving up runs...

I don't see this year's team any better...

The strength is in our outfield? It seems more like smattering of talent that the organization has no idea how to use. Shu playing infield?

Speaking of not knowing what to do with talent/ lacking direction...what about a game 1 winner of the World Series for a struggling AA pitcher named Perdomo?

It is indeed a what have you done for me lately world. DeWitt has put an impressive string together and maybe he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I believe the benchmark to win the NL central to be 90 wins. I think if you win 90 games a year, you've got a pretty good shot at the post season, and it also says you're playing pretty good baseball.

In the last 10 years, DeWitt's/ TLR teams have averaged 89.7 wins a season. Maybe Dewitt deserves a little more support than what he's seen.

It may seem like he runs his baseball organization like it's an Arby's...but even in the last 3 years, the team has averaged 83 wins without the benefit of the services of Carpenter, Mulder and others...

1999- 75 wins
2000- 95 wins
2001- 93 wins
2002- 97 wins Division Title
2003- 85 wins
2004- 105 wins Division Title, NLCS title, WS appearance
2005- 100 wins
2006- 83 wins NLCS & WS title
2007- 78 wins
2008- 86 wins

So while I remain convinced that this team might look more like a 75 to low 80's win squad...the organization has been faithful to prove me wrong. I hope that trend continues.
Jeff Gordon: That is a fair assessment of DeWitt. The idea of building a better farm system is to gain more consistency from year to year. The better the organization, the less a GM has to rely on free agency and dealing with other teams. A good farm system protects against injuries, too.

It'll be fun to see if Jay and Jones take strides in the OF this year. If they progress, then the team really does have assets to build on.

Remember, there are moves to be made yet. How many teams have the money and the prospect surplus to work with as the spring progresses?

robnoshanks: hey jeff, am i missing something here. all these teams want linehan?i was hopeing the 49ers would take him.whats going on here.also i would like to see one of you guys interview him and see what he has to say about the rams.
Jeff Gordon: Scott didn't return any STL calls after his exit. Pity. But good for him that several teams are fighting for him.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, can you give me 3 or 4 names of malcontents that are out the door now that Steve Spagnuolo is our Head Coach.
Jeff Gordon: The coaches will look at guys like I high-priced guys like Holt and Bennett and iffy young veterans like Cogs and Klopfenstein for sure.

Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff, I have some questions for you. I can not believe the Blues lost another defensemen. Do you feel the poor play of Legace and Mason are due to the players or defense? Are there any big name goalie in this years free agent market? Were do you see the Blues heading with its goalie situation concidering this is a problem for the Blues? Thank You for you time.
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Tough question about goaltending. There will be lots of mid-level guys available for a deal, guys like Auld, and older guys like Khabibulin. Mason is under contract for next year, but, yes, he has disappointed. Both goalies can do better. The injury-riddled defense hasn't helped, but both can still be better.

Some on the organization believe Bishop will need a full second AHL season, but Ben still has time to progress this year.

Big B: So was Spags Devaney's first choice or was it Garrett as other have reported?? Any ideas on who the OC might be? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Spagnuolo was the first choice.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, Iam really happy for Kurt Warner and will be rooting hard for him in the Superbowl. Do you think he will make the HOF after he retires? I think he should!
Jeff Gordon: Out at Rams Park, Frank Cusamano is arguing "pro" and KFNS cohorts Bob Fescoe and Howard Balzer are arguing against. That sums up the way the Hall of Fame voters will look at it.

Warner's lack of overall career numbers will hurt him, but the postseason stuff is huge.

Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff, I have a question for you about the Blues. I am having the hardest time understanding the salary cap and injured players. I know injured players still get paid but how does an injured player make cap space? Is it so teams can have money to get another player? How does it work?
Thank You
Scott
Jeff Gordon: A player on long-term disability does not count against the cap. The Blues have lots of cap room as a result, but not enough revenue to spend that money.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, what is your impression of Spag's? I know you wanted R. Ryan, but I think the Jets would have run up the money on us.
Jeff Gordon: I championed Ryan, but Spagnuolo was a strong get.

WPB Redbird: Regarding the Miles/ Kennedy/ Greene middle infield debacle. Am I the only one that remembers Eckstein was the WS MVP? I suppose the fact that he signed for 850k in SD is meaningless huh? Maybe we could pay Jim Edmonds to play for the Cubs this year too. Jimmy E must still be laughing...what was it, 2 years 36 million? And now they're handcuffed by Kennedy's salary at 2b...maybe we could sign Mulder, I hear he's a free agent. Or for laughs and giggles, lets bring back Donovon Osborne, since we're reminiscing about contracts gone awry.

I think the voice of critics is well founded. But that's the world we live in, isn't it? Even when you win you have to find something to complain about. I just don't care for the GM and owner to be so put off by the fans remarks...when there's validity to their argument. Truth hurts I guess.
Jeff Gordon: Whenever DeWitt feels gets in a huff over fan hysteria, he can go back and polish up his postseason hardware.

Brian: Gordo,

Do you agree or disagree with the tactic of bringing in Jason Garrett for a Stl visit when Billy knew all along he wasn't his choice?

A little to busch league for me.

Thanks,

Brian
Jeff Gordon: Jason wanted to take a look at the complex. And until a coach is signed, sealed and delivered, why not keep everybody in play.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, 3-4 or 4-3 that is the question. Wouldn't Julius Peppers look good in a Rams uniform?
Jeff Gordon: In the right circumstances, sure. Not sure the Rams will go there, though.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, what kind of offense will the Rams run this year? I am a little weary about Steven Jackson with his injury history. I hope we get a good backup if we are going to feature a running attack.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed.

Carlos Galvan: Hello Jeff,

Now that there is a coach... Any insight as to how the negotiations are proceeding with Atogwe / Bartell?

Cheers,

Carlos
Jeff Gordon: We'll see. Devaney will want to keep both. He and Steve have already gone over all the potential FAs.

Jeff: Whats your opinion of the Cubs player moves they look like team that could be real old in a hurry with a bunch of dead payroll
Jeff Gordon: Maybe. And their defense isn't great. But they ought to score runs and make another big run at the postseason.

Petey123: Jeff, does Chip have to sell or could he hang on too the Rams as long as he wants?
Jeff Gordon: At some point, he'll have to deal with his inheritance issues.

David: What happened to Andy McDonald? A couple of weeks ago, I heard he was close to coming back.
Jeff Gordon: But, like Oshie, he found out he wasn't THAT close. He is still feeling some discomfort. The all-star break will help.

Livingbehindenemylines: This is an odd question but is there a reason AM wears a light blue dress shirt for every single game. Is this a lucky shirt or does our coach only own one color?
Jeff Gordon: Maybe that's his look. I don't believe the man is superstitious.

marpdagn: Hey, Gordo. As the hot stove season winds down, can you give us an educated guess on what the Cards' payroll will be after raises to Ank and Luddy and Welly, and also what the Cubs' payroll will be for this year after they complete the long rumored Jake Peavy deal? It looks like it is gonna happen now that they have traded for Olsen, who the Padres coveted.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards are threatening to NOT spend $100 million this year. If the team comes well under that, then, yes, DeWitt Care should take some heat for using the economy as an excuse to go conservative.

Steve o' the north: Gordo

Pardon me for giving a crap about Haslett. As far as I could tell, he was a good coach, just maybe not the right coach in the end. While I am excited about the direction the Rams went, I wonder where Haslett will end up. Any info? Any chance he'll stay in St. Louis?

Steve
Jeff Gordon: I thought he was the front-runner for the Packers defensive coordinator job, but that didn't work out. So we'll see.

Cards4520: Do you think with the hiring of Spags Rams players will buy into his philosophy? Have you heard any reaction from any of them yet?
Jeff Gordon: A few players were on hand for his news conference and they seemed excited. Let's see how they feel when he raises the bar on them.

Antonio: Now that Spagnuolo has been named HC what the chances to stay are for the following players:

Atowe
Bartell
Holt
Pace
Little

What changes you see on defense and offense?
Jeff Gordon: The top two guys are critical, for obvious reasons. The latter three are pricey and in their twilight. Tough calls for the new guys.

1965 ram: FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THE ROSTER, WEAKNESS'S YOU WANT TO CHANGE FIRST?
Jeff Gordon: Spagnuolo wouldn't touch that . . .

Kevin: During winter warmups, did anyone mention any possible moves. I saw some interviews with players and even they were saying there are some holes to fill!
Jeff Gordon: Yes. there are holes to fill. And some of the guys at the warm-up could exit in a deal to fill them.

h2o_jd55: Hey Gordo - Since Devaney and Spags will be spending most of thier time at the Senior Bowl interview coaches, who from the Rams organization will be watcing practices & players?
Jeff Gordon: Softli is still leading the college scouting front. And Devaney will be able to be involved there, since Spagnuolo will lead the coaching search. And remember, other coaches are there to watch players, too.

fletcher: Ok, we have a HC I can respect(asifitmatters) walking thru the door. More importantly one that the players must can and must respect. My question now is who are the coordinators? I guess I trust his opinion on defense (but I want Romeo at least interviewed) but I wonder about his choice on offense. I remember when Martz was mentioning coming back with Haslett. It really wasn't the worst or best idea because it is still Martz but you knew they would be aggresive. Now I am not sugggesting that with Spags but we do need an aggressive OC. A team needs to be able to score 35 points in order to be successful in this (new) division. So I would hope Spags gets some help from Devaney on this and not just bring in one of his pals. With the release of so many head coaches this year there must be plenty of proven coordinators out there. Who are the best names out there, in your opinion and who do you think will be picked for OC and DC? Either way I hope they get it done fast so we can get focused on the draft and free agency.....Oh 1 more thing....KEEP LITTLE, especially O.J. AND BARTELL...if possible Holt. and CUT CHAVOUS Thx for da Luv!!
Jeff Gordon: Don't expect a high-flying offense. Spagnuolo and Devaney are on the same page -- this will start with power running.

Clark Young: Jeff,
Can you offer some insight on what the difference in philosphy Spags may bring to the Ram's defense from what we saw with Haslett? Also, based on what you know about his football pedigree, who do you think most influenced his fundamental football philosophy??
As always, thanks for your insight!!
Jeff Gordon: Working under Jim Johnson gave Spagnuolo his philosophy. He brought that approach to New York. He will try to bring it here, too. If you like creative blitzing, you will like this guy.

Flotrain: Barring any deals in the next few weeks leading to Opening Day, and this won't go over well with most bashers here in STL land, but the lineup looks decent. 2-6 in the order have the ability to hit over 20+ homeruns. 9-1-2 can all get on base and steal a few. Molina continues to hit over .300, hopefully last year was a fluke with Greene and NOT with Ludwick. After writing this down, I see some potential. And please everyone, stop with the Kennedy bashing! I'll take a 2B who can hit .280+, play solid D, get on base and steal a few any day of the week! What are your thoughts on the lineup sir? And, yeah a HUGE IF, but Carp, Wainright and Lohse is a solid 1-3. I also believe Wellemeyer could be a 15-18 game winner this year. Thoughts on those too?
1. Schumacker
2. Ankiel
3. Pujols
4. Ludwick
5. Glaus
6. Greene
7. Molina
8. Pitcher
9. Kennedy
Jeff Gordon: Don't rule out the new and improved Rasmus in the leadoff spot. Sounds like is ready to get back to work.

Mr.Bad to the Bone: Gordo I'm of the belief that the Rams should trade out of the #2 spot in the draft. My belief is that the Rams need a lot more help than the 2nd pick in the draft can provide. My question is do you think the Rams can trade down 2 or 3 times and gain extra picks and if so who are some teams you think would be willing to trade with the Rams. Thanks for taking my question.
Jeff Gordon: There may be a chance to trade down, if some team really wants Smith or Crabtree. There may be a chance to get an extra pick, but the Rams will want to get an OT at some point in the first round.

captain hero: I suppose this is a dead issue, but was anything serious ever discussed between the Cardinals and the Padres concerning Peavy, in regards to specific players? Do you think it is more an issue of the Cardinals not seeing much value in having another potential Cy Young winner on the staff, or not wanting to give up what the Padres wanted? And if the latter is true, who were they asking for?
Jeff Gordon: There wasn't a great fit there because San Diego wants quality young starting pitching coming back. Other than Wainwright, who fits that mode here.

Rita from South County: Hi Jeff,

Thanks for taking our questions today.

With Spags on board, what's the thinking at Rams Park? Is it "we'll build a team with the draft", knowing that will take time. Or, is there a "win now" sense of urgency in the building?
Jeff Gordon: Spagnuolo said it will be a process and he is right. This is just a beginning. There is no shortcut here. The goal is to improve quickly, of course, but don't look for a Jets-like splurge on veteran FAs.

ColtsOriolesBullets: I have been a COLTS FAN since 1971. I am STILL a Colts fan. I hate The Ravens. I always stay loyal to my team, even if they leave town. Yesterday, there were quite a few CARDINAL FANS that continue to root for the Cards, EVEN THOUGH they left St. Louis. On the other hand, VERY FEW Baltimore Colt fans continue to root for The Indy Colts. They jumped on board with The Ravens. Do you have any idea why so many St. Louis Cardinal fans stayed loyal to the Cards when they left St. Louis, while so few Baltimore Colt fans stayed loyal to The Colts when they left Baltimore? As much as I hated to see them leave Baltimore, I could NEVER root against my Colts.
Jeff Gordon: I worked in Baltimore when the Colts left and I worked here when the Cardinals left. In Baltimore, the sense of personal loss was much greater.

captain hero: Is it time to start speaking of the Pronger Curse?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the Blues go through defensemen the way Spinal Tap went through drummers.

bjf: If the Cowboys are down a bit on Garrett right now, would they give permission for the Rams to interview him as their o/c?

I didnt want him as h/c but I think he would be a good choice as o/c. And if Dallas is going to keep T.O. it might be a good move for Jason.
Jeff Gordon: That would be a huge paycut for Garrett. Devaney liked him well enough to make him a finalist, but he isn't Spaguolo's top pick here.

Jack Youngblood: Hi Gordo,

Was leaving the Rams was one of the best things that ever happened to Kurt Warner?
Jeff Gordon: Yes. His family loves the Valley of the Sun and he found another starting job.

jchapp44: Thank-you Mr. Rosenbloom....I since a new beginning...and a guarantee I'm occupying my PSL's this year.....
Jeff Gordon: He will appreciate that.

HORNHEAD13: While it sounds like there is a good chance that Bill Sheridan will be the Rams new defensive-coordinator, is it a near-sure thing that Pat Shurmur will be our new offensive-coordinator?

I wish that they'd bring in Clyde Christensen, Ray Sherman, Wade Wilson and Jimmy Raye in for interviews.

And what about special-teams? Who are some prospects for that position?

Thank you for your time, Mr.Gordon.
Jeff Gordon: Haven't heard any names on special teams.

Rambunctious: Hi Jeff! Couple of questions. How is Billy D's last name correctly pronounced? Is it Devainey - Devonney - or Devanny? Radio and tv folks have been all over the board on this one. Then there's Spags - want to clarify that pronunciation as well? Thanks in advance!!
Jeff Gordon: Spag-no-lo.

markcutshall: Another feel-good story featuring Kurt Warner. I myself couldn't be happier. Go Big Red!
Jeff Gordon: Many St. Louisans concur.

Wyoramsfan: Gordo,
Do you think we can expect a complete overhaul on the defensive side of the ball? There really are only a few players to be excited about (Atogwe, Bartell, Long- maybe, Carriker- maybe) and we know that he likes to get pressure on the QB. What kind of free agent acquisitions could we be looking at this offseason?

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Don't expect a lot of big-ticket FAs. This team needs to be rebuild in numbers.

Armen Dacity: Who do you think might be in line for the OC and DC spots? I'm assuming that Saunders and Venturi are not going to be retained.
Jeff Gordon: No, they are not being retained.

Fife: Gordo,

Spags is the guy I wanted all along. Do you think any of the current staff will be kept? What do you think that their strategy for the draft will be...I would go Oline..oline..Linebacker..QB.. in that order. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Quarterback will get picked at some point, but perhaps not that high.

Mike: What are the chances of bringing back Mulder for a really cheap, one-year contract? If not Mulder, who?
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't expect Mulder, no.

Wade: What do you think the possibilities are for signing Mark Grudzielanek (sp?)? Can we really afford to put up with another year of Adam Kennedy?
Jeff Gordon: No and yes.

rampage: Whats is the status of orlando pace, how much will he make in 2009,how long is his contract. Will they cut him or make him take a pay cut.And if they take a tackle in the first round can pace play guard? Finally if they were to cut pace could he help coach like jackie slater did.
Jeff Gordon: He signed a seven-year, $52.8 million contract in 2005. If the Rams try to cut and resign him, I'm guessing that contenders will come calling.

paceram: Hey Jeff, Thanks again for taking time to answer our questions!

Do you have any ideas on who Steve Spagnuolo is hoping to bring on as his Offensive & Defensive Coordinators and do you know if he will be announcing his choices anytime soon? And, do you think it is pretty safe to say that the Rams will be picking Andre Smith if Detroit doesn't take him with their #1 pick in the upcoming draft? Personally, I am kind of leaning toward Aaron Curry but I will not be disappointed if they take Smith. Lastly, when can we expect to see Spagnuolo begin making player personnel moves?
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't bank of Smith just yet. The Rams can get an OT later in the first round and get a guy that may fit more naturally in the pro game. Spagnuolo won't rush his coaching search, but the process is underway. Expects news soon.

ramsfaninnc1963: hi jeff, can't believe we actually got "spags" to be our coach. do you have any idea who might be hired to run the offense and defense? also i was surprised Haslett didn't get the Green Bay job... any idea where he might end up. and i have to bring up reports that say Ryan might bring in Linehan in New York. Does that change your opinion of Ryan and his judgement?
Jeff Gordon: Oddly, Linehan is in great demand. Tampa Bay could be another option. Teams that want to run a safe offense like him. And his track record as coordinator is fine. But as a head coach, no.

Todd from Michigan: Hi Gordo thank you for the time. Is NY Giants LB coach Sheridan Spags #1 choice for def Coordinator and secondly is Spags just looking for a familiar face so he can call his defense kind of like when the off Cord. from the Lions (can't think of his name)but held the title and Linehan called the plays.
Jeff Gordon: I don't know if the coordinator will call the plays, but it WILL be Spagnulo's defense. He will call people he knows so he can get the program in place as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Encino: The Rams spent a first round draft choice on Tye Hill. Do you think this was a wasted choice? In other words, when Hill comes back next season, do you think he'll develop into a better-than-average defender?
Jeff Gordon: Hard to say. He went from being not good enough to being absolutely terrible.

Todd from Michigan: Hi Jeff Do you think there is a good chance that James Butler will be playing SS for us next year. I see he is a free agent and a Spags guy with nice size at 6'3" 215. Thanks Jeff
Jeff Gordon: That would be a good call.

Todd from Michigan: Hi Jeff
Jeff do you think with the Packers hiring Dom Capers that will hurt Spags chances of bring so of his people (like Sheridan to run the def) because the Giants will hire from within.
Thank you Mr. Gordon
Jeff Gordon: We'll see. The competition for coaches will be fierce.

CoachVH: Gordo

I have 3 Rams questions: What is Softli's current role; who is primarily responsible for the Bennett & Bell FA signings; and what role has Devaney had in constructing the current roster?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Devaney has been here for less than a year, so judge him on guys that arrived within that time frame. So Bennett isn't his fault. Softli is preparing for the college draft and he works well with Billy.

BillP: Hey Jeff, lets hypothetically say the Rams win Super Bowl 36. Do you think the downward spiral that the Rams have taken since that game would of happened regardless, or do you think a victory there would of actually changed course of history for Martz and Warner here with the Rams? Your take. Thanks and have a good week!
Jeff Gordon: The loss got to Martz and caused some of his madness. The impact of that defeat was huge and it accelerated the deterioration always threatens top teams.

Peter J.: Good Afternoon Jeff,
Some good news for all of us Rams fans!!! It's nice to see that Chip honored his word and allowed Billy D. to get who he wanted as coach; Chip's stock just went up a few points in my book.

On to the questions: Do you have any idea what changes Spags may make to the coaching staff? Does he have any friends in the NFL who might follow him here? Lastly do you think there will be any holdovers from this past year?

Thanks for taking my question and Go RAMS!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: I agree on Chip. His stock is higher now. Same with Billy.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

I know you and I share the same sentiment on Carp's status. He's here when he's here and winning games. In light of everything being said, do you see Carp winning 5 games, 10 games or 15 games in 2009?
Jeff Gordon: I'll believe he will win 15 again when I see it. I can't predict it.

Todd from Michigan: Hi again Jeff
Last one I promise Jeff where can we see Steve Spanuolo's press conference, and what time is it at. I heard 11:00am but haven't seen or heard anything been watching NFL Network.
Jeff Gordon: I don't know if the video will be available on Rams.com or NFL.com. I'm sure the NFL Network and ESPNNews will have big chunks.

rockins104: My 1st Question for Coach steve is
does he truly believe that the ball running control offense is the perfect fit for the rams. thats exactly what Jim Hasslett was running and it didn't work how can it work for him.

and also wouldn't it be better to get michael crabtree in the draft to replace Isaac bruce on our offense. then get julius pepper in the free agent to replace grant wistrom.
Jeff Gordon: Jackson was hurt a lot after his holdout and the team lacked a powerful back-up. Still, Steven is the team's biggest offensive asset. Crabtree is obviously appealing -- to replace Holt.

Jack Youngblood: All hail the new deciders! It's been a long haul since 1979 when the last deciders took charge. Let's review some of the decisions:

Worst:
-Mike Shad of Queens University Drafted #1 in 1986. Can you say reach?

-Jim Everett was named as the franchise player even though he wasn't a free agent - then the team lost their starting left tackle Gerald Perry as the first free agent signed away under the new system. This eventually lead to Everett's demise as a starting QB and multiple concussions for Chris Miller. Someone didn't understand the rules of free agency.

-Rich Brooks was named head coach. Mike Belotti has been a great coach at Oregon ever since.

-Scott Linehan was named head coach. Could someone not tell that this guy didn't have the right stuff?

-Dieter Brock was signed as starting quarterback. Sports Illustrated puts him on the cover with the caption "Madam Ram Gets her Man". This isn't the CFL. The SI cover curse found its legs.

-Eric Dickerson was allowed to leave to the Colts and in return the Rams received several first round picks. These picks were squandered on draft reaches and busts.

-After numerous holdouts over salary with star players in the 1990's the Rams developed a reputation for being cheap.

-After developing the team into a Superbowl Champ in 1999 the Rams let many of their best players leave to other teams via free agency.

-Numerous Draft busts in the late '80's and early '90's. Cleavland Gary, Gaston Green, Aaron Cox?

Best Decisions:

-The team hired Dick Vermeil. The Rams gave Vermeil the power to act as coach and GM. He made some amazing deals such as picking up Marshal Faulk and fining little known performers such as Kurt Warner and London Fletcher.

-The team hired John Robinson. Robinson provided leadership that had been missing under Ray Malavasi.

-The team fired John Robinson. The roster was awful and someone needed to take the fall for that.

All hail the new deciders. I hope they make better decisions than the last group.
-
Jeff Gordon: Well, Devaney wasn't involved in any of that.

rockintheburbs: Jeff,
When is the NHL trade deadline? And do you think the Blues will move Manny since we have Bishop waiting in the wings
Jeff Gordon: It's probably too soon for Ben, but Holt could move up if Manny is dealt. But I don't see a rental market for Manny. Lots of goaltenders out there.

Jerry the Pro: Gordo-

Rumors are swirling already about Spags' potential Offensive Coordinator selection. Do you see Mad Mike returning to the sidelines with the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: No.

cardinal269: update on chris carpenter?
Jeff Gordon: He says is healthy, but let's see what his innings pitched totals look like in July.

CHUCK H.: JEFF, WAS SPAGS THEIR GUY OR WERE THEY AFRAID THEY WOULN'T GET RYAN ?? ALSO I THOUGHT THEY WERE VERY IMPRESSED WITH FRAZIER ??
Jeff Gordon: Frazier was No. 2. Ryan never got to that final stage because of the timing. Garrett was just a fall back.

RXBluejay25: The one thing you had to notice when listening to Spags today was his team first mentality which takes me back to the Super Bowl in which the Patriots were introduced as a team. I think this was the moment which changed the Rams up until this point. I think there may be an offensive lineman (Richie)who will quickly be buying in to this philosophy. Who can not be excited at this point?
Jeff Gordon: I like his approach. Very direct. Now let's see which players buy in.

Jayman: Gordo....When is the contract up between players and owners? Do you think there will be a salary cap in baseball, especially if the down turn in the economy continues....
Jeff Gordon: I don't see a cap, ever, because the revenue gap between the haves and have-nots is so enormous. Look at the ticket prices at Yankee Stadium.

russell: I have one small question. I see the rams signed a few players to the roster while they were looking for head coaches, was wondering why they would do that and who made those decisions bd or haslett. shouldnt they have waited till new head coach was picked.
Jeff Gordon: Devaney needs to make sure he has his camp numbers. The big decisions will come now that the coach is on board.

Jbry06: Do you think that the new coach will want to bring in or draft his own quaterback?
Jeff Gordon: That is a need position, but not THAT big of a need with Bulger making so much and the emphasis on running the ball in 2009.

Jumbo J: I know FA could change things, but do you feel we still go OT? I think Birk will stay and Gross could be expensive. Will he be more than a #2's base salary?

Or does Spags/Devaney go in another direction? Maybe Curry or Crabtree?

Fresno State QB, Brandstater looked pretty good in the senior bowl. Possibly a future replacement for Bulger.
Jeff Gordon: If the Rams move back, they could fill another need and still get an OT, given the draft depth. That will be a thought.

Franklin: Oh Jeff,

Mentioned several times during the presser today was Stan Kroenke. His role and "juice" in this whole Rams operation is...?

It's me,
Franklin!
Jeff Gordon: Chip is running the show, with Shaw's guidance. Stan is a successful and well-respected guy, but he is just an adviser.

Justin Byrd: Gordo,

Earlier this year, I heard Billy Devaney talking about taking a Offensive Tackle in the late first round, early second round.
Does this mean that the Rams are not looking at one of the top Offensive tackles with the number 2 overall pick?
If so, what are the chances of the Rams drafting Aaron Curry or trading down?
Jeff Gordon: There is a chance to go elsewhere, especially LB, early. Remember, Spagnuolo really values LBs.

ramsman77: Hi Gordo DO YOU SEE THE rams getting any of the good free agents this year? They really need a big linebacker in the middle how about Suggs?
Jeff Gordon: Devaney is warning us to think mid-level FAs.

Jumbo J: Early Mock

BusinessSocks!: Hi Gordo,
Any word on what will be the Rams priority order for Re-signing free agents?

Any chance of getting Pierce from the giants? and would you like that move?

Thanks for your time,
BusinessSocks!
Jeff Gordon: Interesting passage from the New York Times:

"Pierce is the middle linebacker and a captain, a key spokesman. But his performance sagged noticeably after he was with Burress in a Manhattan nightclub when Burress wounded himself in the thigh.

"Pierce was at the team meeting Monday, and Coughlin said they spoke. “He’s sorrowful, disappointed, probably a little bit discouraged,” Coughlin said. “How many times are you the No. 1 seed? I’m sure he’s reflecting on that today.”

"Pierce said often in recent weeks that he was tired. He is 30 and has played eight seasons. It is not out of the question that the Giants would use free agency, trades or the draft to seek out another middle linebacker."

So there you go.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

How much, if any, was Chris Mortensen's report that Devaney wanted Garrett but when the money was too high that Shaw was able to tilt the table towards his first choice, Spags?
Jeff Gordon: This is a surprise to Devaney, who wanted Spagnuolo all along. Remember, he worked with Steve twice. He just wasn't sure he could land him.

jwl6f8: Your prediction: Who is more successful in turning around a sorry state of affairs...Spagnuolo or Obama?
Jeff Gordon: Spags can use free agency. Obama has no such option.

Dave W.: Hey Gordo - Thanx for fielding our questions....
My question - and I know it's a long shot but with Coach Spags now on board, what do think about signing Brandon Jacobs who is UFA to play along side Jackson?
Also I heard earlier in the season that the 49ers would probably cut Alex Smith due to a roster bonus - he could make for a good young back up to be coached up for the future. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Alex will be looking for a new start. I don't know if there is much there, but at least he would bring youth and mobility to the spot. And he is somewhat battle-tested.

Another power RB would be nice, all things considered.

JB: Do you think that this coach will be more focused on the Def. and more likely to draft the linebacker from USC.
Jeff Gordon: He'll have a voice in the draft and he will want to upgrade the LB corps some how, yes.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

If the Rams are going to go with a run first attack, will they be looking to pick up a running back in the first three rounds? Jackson may be a beast but he's a little fragile IMO to count on for a 16 game season.
Jeff Gordon: How about picking up Ward as a FA?

rich: Good afternoon Gordo,

Do you see any of the former Rams assistants being retained?

There seemed be a lot more churn among assistant coaches NFL wide this year than most with a lot of teams making changes.

Thanks for taking my question.
Jeff Gordon: We've mentioned a few names of Rams staffers who could stay. Thing is, a lot of coaches are trading places. The competition will be fierce.

dogeatdog63775: What free agent starter do you see the cardinals most likely getting if any?
Jeff Gordon: Kris Benson? Actually, I'd like to see them buck up for Jon Garland if they won't spend on Perez or Wolf.

Matt: Gordo,
I have to echo all my fellow Rams fans in their surprise and excitement of the Spags hire. What a great message to your fans and players. On another note, not many people seem to be talking about this, but it seems like the Cards have quite a few players in contract years or arbitration eligible next year (Ankiel, Glaus, Greene, Ludwick, Kennedy.. to name a few). How does this situation compare to Cards teams of the past? This seems like a good thing for next year (players motivated to cash in = better stats / more wins), but what is your take on the real life effect of this based on past experience? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: The walk year usually produces big numbers. And the Cards aren't as concerned about having so many guys up at once, due to the improved organizational depth.

Jumbo J: If we were to trade down, who do you see as possible trading partners?

Or what will we trade away to move back into the 1st or 2nd? Holt, Pace, Pisa or Little?
Jeff Gordon: Other than maybe Pace, I don't see first-round draft potential from those veterans. They have big contracts and declining production. Trade-down possibilities usually emerge late, after free agent and all the sorting occurs.

Tim: Hmmm.. you know its funny I havnt heard once the Rams crying about the economy the wat Dewitt has. In fact It was said money isnt a factor to pick a now head coach and the Rams arnt anywhere near as good a financial statud as the Cards. Guess Dewitt found another scapegoat to not bring in top FA talent
Jeff Gordon: What does the Rams coaching search have to do with free-agent spending?

eternalramnation: Hey Gordo,

Thank you for your answers and for hosting this forum. If we are looking at Ward how about Sproles? A nice change of pace RB to Jackson and can return kicks.
Jeff Gordon: True, but the Chargers may keep him and move L.T. instead. All the injuries have taken a toll on the league's most productive back.

ramsfan: I thought Rex Ryan was one of the favorites. Why wouldnt they have waited for the results of yesterdays game and then had all their choices available? Although Iwatched the conference today and Spagnoulo is very impressive.
Jeff Gordon: Other teams were sniffing around Spanguolo. It was fish or cut bait time. And the Jets had a step on the Rams for Ryan.

rockintheburbs: Jeff,
I'm tryin to follow the blues game online today and i noticed that Manny had a couple saves and allowed a goal and now Mason is in net. Did Manny get injured or was he pulled due to lack of focus?
Jeff Gordon: Not sure what happened there. I've been busy at Rams Park with the coaching hire.

HugeCardfan: Hi Jeff,

You seem to be sanguine that Rasmus will start the year in St Louis. Since there is a logjam with outfielders, Ank, Ludwick, Schu, Joey Bombs and Duncan, who isn't on the roster? Looks like the FA market really hampered Mo's ability to get fair value from his ML ready outfielders.
Jeff Gordon: Many teams showed an interest in Schumaker, so he could become an odd man out. Or Ankiel could become trade fodder, if a great offer came along.

Leecard: Do you think the Cards will do anything about another starter until they know for sure Carpenter's status? I think they should go after another good starter and treat Carpenter as a bonus if he can come back. I also am not happy with Piniero in the rotation. Can't they package him up with a player someone wants and make a deal?
Jeff Gordon: Why deal Pineiro when his trade value is low? Duncan still believes he can make some headway there.

bhfudbal99: Do you know what happened to Juan Gonzalez? He was playing real well at spring training last year, but then got injured and haven't heard about him ever since.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, well, welcome to Juan Gone's world. When he gets hurt, he stays hurt. Albert got him a look-see, but it was inevitable that he would get hurt and disappear. Thank goodness the Cards didn't trade somebody to clear a spot for him.

HugeCardfan: Matt just asked you about players ready to enter FA but included Ludwick. I think he is in his first year of arb and has a couple years before FA. However, Wellemeyer should be a FA at the end of the year. If he continues to pitch this year like he has for us the past 2, shouldn't he be locked up a while?
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick is controlled for three more years, I believe. That is why he has value to other teams in a trade. I believe the Cards will lock him up after this year, if he duplicates his success and stays healthy.

Wellemeyer is a good case. This team has bucked up before to keep guys out of free agency. With the market softening for lower-end FAs, maybe Todd would be willing to look at an extension later this year if all goes well. He fits well here. If he stays healthy, he could turn into a strong No. 4-type starter.

stan's-my-man: Has Coach indicated whether he plans to live in St. Louis or will his family remain on the east coast?
Jeff Gordon: This is a year-round job. The family comes here.

Kevin: If the cardinals have a season like last (good, but miss the playoffs-3rd year in a row) what are the chances % wise that larussa will be back? If they make the playoffs what are the chances?
Jeff Gordon: Make playoffs: 90 percent.
Miss playoffs: Depends on how close the Cards are and how the kids are progressing.

Kevin: A what if senerio...if Ryan was hired here would he have maybe chosen linehan to run the offense?!?!...( I would hope not...but it looks like he has interest in linehan)
Jeff Gordon: Something tells me that would have been too awkward to try.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

I'm seeing a pitching market that may actually play into Mo's hands (not offering 3 years or more) long enough for Carp's deal to come off the books. It looks like a lot of this years guys are going to have to settle for 1-2 year deals, and they will join next years market that should include Bedard, Lackey, Myers and Wellemeyer in addition to others. Suffice to say, it looks like St. Louis might be bargain hunting for a few more years (not that there's anything wrong with that)....fair assessment?
Jeff Gordon: Fair enough. In that time, the Cards would also hope to find some more Kyle McClellan types to fill slots at a modest price.

ActionJackson39: Gordo,

Why can't the Rams go out and get at least ONE big free agent (Gross, Peppers, etc.)? Mid-level guys to me seems cheap.
Jeff Gordon: At the end of the day, the same amount of dough will be spent. I like going for quality, but this team needs some quantity.

Steve (Roch. NY): I haven't heard anything from Marshall or Dan Dierdorf about the hiring of Spagnuolo, any idea what they think of the new HC?
Jeff Gordon: Haven't heard, but this guy is pretty well-respected. How could NFL insiders not like him.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

Supposedly Spags wanted say on the 53 man roster. Any idea how that was settled between Devaney and Spags?
Jeff Gordon: The coach always has say on who plays and who doesn't. Devaney's job, as he explains it, is to get as many good players as he can for the coach. Then it is up to the coaches to make the final call. Billy has no issues with this.

I believe we have officially beat this horse dead.

bhfudbal99: Gordo,

Who wins tonight; Cavs or Lakers?
Jeff Gordon: Lakers. That is a shout to Coach Wilson, my favorite Kobe lover.

Thanks for all the great questions and comments. See you next time!
