Joan Hammond: I've always been told there is no such thing as a dumb question--so here goes.
When I'm watching the football game on TV, there is a colored line at the yard line that comes and goes. How do they do that?? |
| Jeff Gordon: The technology, "1st and 10," is offered by a company called Sportvision. It is a complex process, naturally, but here is a snippet from the Wikipedia explanation of it: "There are seven computers in total and a crew of 4 people. Two crew members, one inside the stadium and one in front of a computer, communicate the position of the real first down line to make sure everything is working. Another crew member is a troubleshooter. The last crew member monitors the various colors that will make up the color palette onto which the line is drawn." For more on it, Google up "1st and 10" on the Internets . . . |

David Cobler: Hey Gordo;
Thanks for responding to my question!
Just as "As The World Turns", may be the soap opra of choice to some, "St. Louis Cardinal Baseball" is the soap that consumes me. I pay for "Extra Innings" via DTV so I can watch the games here in Topeka, Ks. I rarely miss a game. I have been a Cardinal fan since 1964 due mostly inpart to my mother tuning them in on the radio in the town of Ottumwa, IA. I enjoy the regular season more then the post season because of the good stories (soap opras) that unfold. With that said, the 2008 season is shaping up to be an interesting one because of all the changes taking place on the field. I'd love to see Rasmus make the club and start. In your thinking, which player(s)intrigues you (performance wise) the most for the 2008 season and why?
Thanks for your thoughts/preview Jeff! |
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus is high on that list. So is Brian Barton, a Rule 5 pick-up from Cleveland. He has a similar skill set (with less power) and he will have to stick with the club or go back to the Indians.
Other questions that will define this team:
Is Brendan Ryan a real prospect or a Bo Hart-like flash in the pan?
Is Rick Ankiel a .260 hitter with 25 homers and 90 RBI, or can he improve his contact hitting and do more?
What could a healthy Chris Duncan do with 500 at bats?
Can Scott Spiezio bounced back from his personal problems and help the outfield equation? |
|
| Mike: It appears to me that the most important qualification for being hired as a Linehan assistant is to have been a Linehan cronie at some time in the past. Is that a common practice among head coaches? Martz sacraficed the 2004 and 2005 seasons to keep Larry Marmie employed, will we suffer the same fate with Linehan's cronies? |
| Jeff Gordon: It is common for coaches to hire their buddies, yes. In this case, with Linehan shaping up as a lame duck in 2008, he will have a tough time hiring somebody he has no previous connection with. |
|
| TAR: The trade deadline is 26 February. The Blues have four consecutive home games after the deadline, then go on a nine game road trip, then come home to play Detroit. That's not exactly a cake walk for a team in the rebuilding mode! What's their game plan? In other words, if they're x points out of the playoffs by the deadline are they sellers? |
Jeff Gordon: I don't see them going into "sell" mode, other than to jettison a veteran or two (Martin Rucinsky!) not coming back next season. The Blues will continue developing their team regardless of the standings. And that development will include cycling out some veterans to create room for younger players -- or dealing a veteran for another player will longer term value, like an Andy McDonald.
On the flip side, I don't see them going into "buy" mode and sacrificing prospects for short-term gain. That won't happen this year. |
|
hammer: Do you think the Cards should invite Reggie Sanders to camp? He could provide the right handed bat in the outfield and would be a positive influence in the clubhouse.
Are the Blues going to make a trade anytime soon? |
Jeff Gordon: The Cards need to add somebody to compete with Ryan Ludwick for ABs against lefties, since Ryan didn't exactly wear them out last year. Juan Gonzalez apparently meets that criteria. Reggie Sanders could fit that bill, too, given the leadership ability you mention.
As for the Blues, the team wouldn't mind moving Christian Backman if the opporunity arose. |
|
Nick: Hi Gordo,
As the Rams approach the draft with several major holes to fill, what are the chances they trade down in the first round? Since either Dorsey or McFadden will be available at #2, it seems like a lot of teams would be interested. Your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: That is a possibility, but probably only for a few slots. The Rams need to get an impact guy. Increasingly, I like Chris Long for that pick -- since others have comvinced me that Jake Long isn't a slam-dunk pick at tackle. |
|
| Big Thirsty: WOW, can things get anyworse for the rams. I mean what do we do now. We stink, The owner just died i mean give me a break. Is there any reason to think we can even be competetive next year. Or should i hold a garage sale and get rid of all my rams stuff and buy a head stone that says R.I.P Rams Nation... |
Jeff Gordon: Bernie's assessment of Chip Rosenbloom is encouraging, but it's tough to predict how long it will take him to change leadership. I'm sure he's put some thought into this responsibility, but we may not know his vision for the franchise for some time. The family needs time to grieve Georgia's passing.
This will be an intriguing offseason, for sure. But in the NFL, the future is never bleak. With good management, franchise's can turn around in a year or two. |
|
| Big Thirsty: Who are we going to get for offensive cordinator. I think Cam Cameron would be a great fit for us. Do you think linehan will hire another loser from his past. |
| Jeff Gordon: Trouble is, the in-demand guys like Cameron and Billick can be picky. They can sit back, collect their money from their old employers and wait for an ideal opporunity. The Rams, with Linehan serving as a lame duck, do not provide an ideal opportunity. So the team will likely get a position coach looking to move up to coordinator job. |
|
| Big Thirsty: Do you think we will make a serious run at Alan Fanaca in the offseason |
| Jeff Gordon: I'm sure Linehan will want to do that, but why would any top free agent pick the Rams right now? Again, the lame-duck regime is at a disadvantage. |
|
| Big Thirsty: What defensive free agents will we be looking at in the offseason. |
Jeff Gordon: The Rams still decide what the coaching staff will look like and what scheme they will play. Also, the front office must decide what to do with Little, Pace and Bruce -- three players eating up some cap space.
So it's tough to assess their FA game plan. But again, I wouldn't expect this regime to gain a whole lot in free agency, given the lame-duck nature of the coach. |
|
| Big Thirsty: So when do you think the Rams will relocate back to california. |
Jeff Gordon: Bernie cautions us not to presume a Rams move back to LA, since Chip Rosenbloom appreciates the support the franchise got here in St. Louis. But nothing is forever, especially with the potential of the franchise going up for grabs.
If Stan Kroenke could get the team, that would help St. Louis a lot. But the NFL would have to change its rules to allow that. |
|
| Garin: Hi Jeff , I am curious as to why Linny did not sack Wayne Moses and Willy Robinson at the same time he gave Paul Boudreau the boot and removed Greg " predictable " Olson from his title , seems like more sense if you are cleaning house to do it all in one fail swoop and not leave a pile of dust laying around. |
| Jeff Gordon: Well, the running backs were fine. I especially like how Antonio Pittman got worked into the mix, giving the team three quality backs. And the secondary held up most of the year despite losing top cornerbacks Fakhir Brown and Tye Hill for big chunks. Atogwe has become an impact safety and Ron Bartell progressed well. |
|
Jim Glines: What happened during the Linehann meetings with Shaw and Zuggy in Los Angeles. I think fans expected to see 'major shakeup' in the coaching staff, yet nothing real has been forthcoming. Now with Georgia's death, how will that impace the ability of the Rams to act decisively on their selection of a new Offensive Coordinator and other major coaching needs?
So many questions; so few answere! |
| Jeff Gordon: This is Chip Rosenbloom's team now. And it may take him awhile to get involved, for obvious reasons. So, no, the LA summit was not going to generate major change under those circumstance. Shaw is likely on his way out -- and Shaw is the guy that forces major change. |
|
| Tim Leahey: Did anyone notice that old Mizzou roundballer, Linas Kleiza dropped in 41 pts for the Denver Nuggets the other night? I am not sure if that is the game where Iverson got kicked out or not, which would be the reason why he got so many touches. 41 pts might have matched his cumulative pts for his career. That was one decent recruit for Coach Q. |
| Jeff Gordon: Linas has developed into a nice player for the Nuggets. Stan Kroenke looks for smart for taking care of his old Tiger . . . |
|
| Tim: HOw would you rank the blues top prospects 1-5 and how much of an impact will the have on the league when they get there? |
Jeff Gordon: Top five Blues propects:
1- Steve Wagner, D: Already proved he is one of the top six defenders here.
2- Roman Polak, D: Another top six defender.
3- Patrick Berglund, C: He should be a solid No. 2 center in two years.
4- T.J. Oshie, W: Versality Brad Boyes-type player.
5- Ben Bishop, GT: Potential long-term solution in goal.
|
|
| Tim: Is Kenny lofton an option for centerfield? We can sign him to a one year deal, theres are leadoff hitter and then Colby can spend the season in AAA so hes not rushed? |
| Jeff Gordon: It's a thought, but Ankiel, Schumaker, Ludwick and Barton can all play center field too. So Rasmus isn't going to get rushed. |
|
| Francisco Prado: Gordo, My condolences and sincere grief goes to Georgia's family. I knew that day would come and my heart goes out to her loved ones she left behind. St. Louis fans should appreciate that Georgia brought them a team to the Gateway to the West. I've been a Rams fan since I knew a thing or two about football. Trough good times and bad times I have always been there with my Rams. I've been to games at Anaheim and St. Louis to root for them. Now for the first time I have doubts who will be or what will it be for the future of the ownership of this franchise. I never knew another owner other than Georgia for the Rams. I just hope that the next "true" owner is a football person with passion that will lead this team to better results. Like they said, It all starts at the top. God bless Georgia, and thank you for the memories. |
| Jeff Gordon: Thanks for your thoughts. We must remember that this is a difficult time for all of Georgia's friends and family members. |
|
| donsods: Gordo--any reason for the assistant coach firings this week? I never quite understand that--do they not teach well or is it something else? |
| Jeff Gordon: After a 3-13 finish, change is inevitable. None of the coaches did a good enough job, obviously. Are the ones staying lucky or unlucky? |
|
| Tim: If you could how would you reconstruct tis rams offenive line? |
| Jeff Gordon: To me, having Pace, Setterstrom, Romberg and Incognito healthy automatically reconstructs the line. The Rams should add a strong third tackle -- a potential starter, given Pace's injury woes and Barron's issues -- and enhance the interior line depth as well. But the big investment should be made at tackle, for obvious reasons. |
|
| Tim: How long do you think it will be before Cole and Eller are wearing bluenotes? |
| Jeff Gordon: Ian and Lars are probably a couple years away, at least. Eller missed valuable playing time this year with an injury and Cole could probably use a second year of college hockey and a solid year in the AHL. |
|
| Tim: Are the Cards still shopping Duncan at all? |
| Jeff Gordon: It would take something really compelling to make the team change its mind on Chris. His power upside is immense -- and his ties to the current staff are obvious. The fact Ankiel hit lefties pretty well does ease some of the concerns about a left-centric OF. |
|
carp fan: Hey Gordo,
I know that the Rams have a lot of improving to do, but could some of their failures in both the running and passing game be attributed to NOT having an actual fullback? I look at the playoff teams, with Lorenzo Neal, Heath Evans... the fullback has been sorta phased out in the last few years, but to not have one on your roster at all? |
Jeff Gordon: The Rams need somebody better than Owens as a lead blocker in the run game, yes. Brian Leonard is fine as the pass-blocking back. A run-blocking FB is going to get limited work in this offense, so that guy needs to be inexpensive and outstanding on special teams.
The big problem this season was the obliteration of the offensive line. When overmatched players like Nick Leckey are starting, it doesn't matter who is playing fullback. |
|
| Tim: if you had a choice betwwen Jake Long, Chris Long or Glenn Dorsey who would you tak at No. 2 or would you take anyone else for that matter? |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd take Chris Long, on a flip from Jake. People who follow this stuff closely say he is the better player. He is ready to help right now, which is what the team needs at that pick. |
|
| carp fan: Just one more... I've heard that Bruce and the Rams are discussing bringing Ike back as a slot guy. Does this mean that they would look to draft a wideout... say in the second round? What would this mean for Drew Bennet? |
| Jeff Gordon: Bennett's contract will earn him another chance. Derek Stanley's strong finish will earn him a look, too. But I could see the team drafting a WR -- although it may come later, since Holt/Bennett/Bruce is a pricey top 3. |
|
| Scott L: Would Wagner be an upgrade over Backman? |
| Jeff Gordon: Absolutely. |
|
| Scott L: Top pair defenseman seem to get around $4 million, is Jackman a top pair defensive defenseman? If not then isn’t he destine to leave? |
| Jeff Gordon: An agent told Rutherford that Jackman might be a $5 million guy. But he won't get that here. If the team moved Backman, I suppose Barret could return -- but not a premium dollars. Salvador is playing much better and both Wagner and Polak will need to graduate by the end of this season. |
|
Scott L: The Blues have ceded a lot of points to teams that will be playing for the 8th playoff spot, practically keeping Edmonton and Columbus’s playoff hopes alive by themselves while tormenting the higher seeds and stealing a few points. When is it time to bring up more bodies from Peoria and go for a lower pick in a deep draft class?
Isn’t it odd that the big club cant score while the minor league club is one of the tops in scoring, and yet we haven’t seen a recall designed to assist the offense or PP? |
Jeff Gordon: I'd like to see Linglet get his shot. Glumac was recalled to fill a fourth-line role, something he can certainly help with.
This team has the talent to stay in the playoff hunt to the end. I don't see Davidson, Pleau or Murray conceding anything in the weeks ahead, even as the schedule gets tougher. |
|
Jack Cramond: Gordo,
having been a ram fan for 40 years, I do not feel that I have ever felt as much despair and uncertainty I do now. The rams are in bad shape with practically no hope for the 2008. It looks like a 3-13 season will be the best that the team will do next season. with the same people running the show, nothing will get better. Can you tell me when and if the rams will have new ownership. Will anything happen before the start of the 08' seson?? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams could do a lot better than 3-13 by simply getting healthier on the offensive line and by fresheningly up the supporting cast. It's time to cycle out the Claude Wrotens and Dominique Byrds and cycle in a few more Clifton Ryans and Adam Carrikers. |
|
Brian from Vegas: Gordo,
What are you hearing about the chances of a full recovery by Orlando Pace? With all the problems the Rams have on the Offensive Line, can they count on Pace coming back at full strength next year and then pass on Jake Long to take someone like Chris Long? I prefer the Rams take Jake Long, just in case Pace cannot come back, but even if he does, at least there is a succession plan in place and big Jake can help on short yardage. |
| Jeff Gordon: Pace should recover from this injury, but you do have to wonder about his durability for the rest of his career. For that reason, the team does need to add a tackle. But is Jake the right guy, at that pick? Many expects are dubious. |
|
Mitch From San Diego: Oh the humanity! I was listening to NFL radio the other day when someone listed all of the qualified former head coaches available it occurred to me that with all these guys are out there and we get to look forward to another year of losehan.
Do we need anymore evidence of losehan's incompetence than the hiring of FOSL Steve Loney. A year ago Jerry Jones was criticized for signing the massively under achieving Cardinals T Leonard Davis (who was often referred to as a first round bust) to a huge contract. Now Davis is a Pro Bowler. He must have learned something in Dallas that he did not in Arizona. Who was Leonard Davis' position coach while he was under grossly achieving in AZ? None other than our new OL coach, STEVE baLONEY. Go Chargers. |
| Jeff Gordon: Right now, FOSL are about all the Rams can hope to attract to the coaching staff. Again, this regime has "lame duck" stamped all over it. |
|
| Jacob Frierdich: Hey Gordo, Do you see the cards adding any more hitters through free agency or trades and what do you see happening with the 5th starter spot. Also if we stick with the outfielders we have now who makes the roster? |
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will almost certainly add a RH outfielder of some description, just to ramp up the competition. The x-factor is Scott Spiezio, a switch-hitter capable of playing a corner OF spot and adding some offense . . . IF he gets back to his '06 form. The Cards infield depth could free him up for more OF work, if he shines in the spring.
Right now I see an outfield of Duncan, Ankiel, Schumaker, Ludwick and Barton -- with Spiezio also available. Barton would be the defensive replacement for Duncan and Schumaker and Ludwick would both get lots of ABs.
|
|
George Hoffman: Gordo,
So here we are about a month from Spring Training and we haven't completed the rotation yet. Are the Card's starting to zero in on anyone? Names like Jeff Weaver, Livan Hernandez, Bartolo Colon, and Kyle Lohse are still out there but do they improve the team?
Thanks again. |
| Jeff Gordon: Right now, the Cards are counting on Wainwright, Pineiro, Looper, Clement and Mulder. Wellemeyer could be the fifth guy (as needed) in April and Thompson and Reyes are still around. I'd like to see Mozeliak sign one more pitcher or swing a minor deal (Morris) just in case -- but it appears the club is willing to ride this out and see how Mulder, Clement and Carpenter progress physically. |
|
Darin: Gordo,
Is this all we can expect from the Cardinals this off season? Troy Glaus is, I guess, a fine player, but we are at LEAST one healthy starter and an outfielder away from being a .500 team. Please tell me that Mo isn't done. |
Jeff Gordon: Mo would like to have one RH outfielder and another LH relief pitcher/swing man before the start of spring training, but he is willing to see how the young players and the healing players look before making another major move.
If everything falls right, the Cards would have enough to last this season. But that is a big if -- and the Plan Bs on the farm (Jarrett Hoffpauir, Joe Mather, Jaime Garcia, Chris Perez, et al) may not be ready. |
|
glenn: Hi Gordo,
Thanks for the great job you do. Really enjoy your work a great deal.
Do you expect Brain Barton to break camp with the Birds and stick the whole year? |
| Jeff Gordon: There is an excellent chance of that, given the team's need for a Taguchi-type OF to sub in. If Barton has made a full recovery from his knee injury -- another big IF -- he could be a nice get. |
|
Buzz: Gordo,
Do you know what the injury situation is with kicker Jeff Wilkins? I gather it's not something that will heal with time. Do we need to draft or sign a new kicker, even if Wilkins doesn't retire? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Jeff is considering retirement. That, plus his mediocre performance and high contract, opens up the job for next year. |
|
Matt Durocher: Hey Jeff,
A quick comment and a question. First, all the bashing about Linehan hiring his friends (F.O.S.L.) is out of hand. Linehan certainly knows he is on a very hot seat, and is doing what he feels will best save his job. It's his call to make, sink or swim.
Also, do you think Chip will have the stomach to make changes at the top? If so, when? This management has run it's course and a new direction has to start at the top.
Seems a good time to turn this thing upside down. Your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: Chip has to deal with the passing of Georgia. In time, he will make his mark. The fact that Shaw is likely to depart creates that opporunity. Bernie says that Chip takes the Rosenbloom legacy seriously, so he won't want to be in charge of a clown show. |
|
| RCJ: Has there been any indication that the Cardinals will spend more money in the draft than they usually do? I've read articles discussing the more conservative player picks the Cardinals have made because they don't want to give the large signing bonuses guys like Phil Hughes would want. Since we're moving toward a youth, farm system sort of club I want to know if they've given any indication of changing their ways. |
Jeff Gordon: I agree that DeWitt needs to open up his wallet at the draft. This team is no position to pass up top pitching prospects for financial reasons. The Tigers have benefited from spending. In five years, the Cards could become conservative again after restocking the system.
I'd rather see the club wager millions on a top prospect than some middle-run veteran. But it doesn't appear that Bill agrees with me on this. |
|
| RCJ: In light of Georgia's passing I wanted to know if there is any indication of the Rams leaving town. There have been suggestions that Mr. Rosenbloom wants to make it work here, but I thought I heard rumblings to the contrary. I know Kroenke has first rights in a sale but that is not a guarantee that he will take full ownership. Obviously the NFL would like to see a team back in LA and I don't think they take St Louis seriously as a market. What have you heard? Have you been able to gauge any idea of what Rosenbloom wants to do? Is there any slight rumbling of outside ownership groups in case Kroenke doesn't buy the team, and a sense of what they would do? Would Kroenke keep it here? I'm incredibly nervous. |
Jeff Gordon: It's too early to tell. Chip has his own career in Hollywood and he is quite busy. Would he rather cash out the team than run it? And what would the new owner do?
Kroenke would be the ideal owner, of course, but the NFL will have to change its rules to make that happen. |
|
Zach: Hey Gordo,
I read an article on ESPN about Georgia Frontiere and you would not believe the blogs under the article from people in Los Angeles. It made me sick that people would say the things they said about someone who just passed away. I am out in Scottsdale and there is a lot of talk out here about the Rams one day coming back to Los Angeles. Why would her son ever want to bring the team back to LA after hearing all the things they are saying about her mother? Is there any truth to the Rams ever returning to LA? Thanks Gordo! |
| Jeff Gordon: Until the NFL has at least one LA team, anything is possible. Chip would be quite the hero in SoCal if he did bring the team back. As for the abuse Georgia took, that is to be expected. She moved the team. Bill Bidwill isn't a popular guy here. |
|
danielc: hey gordo,
I was just wondering what the cardinals organization has planned at this point for Anthony Reyes? If he does have a good first half and gains value then would the team still look to trade him or would he be a keeper?
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Teams have called about him. And they continue to call about him. He isn't much of a trade chip and the Cards can't just give him away. Nor can the team move him without replacing his depth. So he is in limbo. Mozeliak realizes he could use a fresh start, but he also has to ask "what's in for me"? |
|
danielc: Gordo,
What do you personally expect from Mulder this season?
Wins-
Losses-
ERA-
Thanks |
Jeff Gordon: A realistic guess:
Something like 10-9, 4.50 ERA. If he makes 23 or 24 starts, the club should be thrilled. |
|
danielc: Gordo,
I believe there is no way Ankiel can lead-off for this team if they want to have any success!! I have heard talks of this and it scares the bleep out of me!! I really like Ankiel, but I like him as a guy who drives in runs, not sets the table. I would go with Barton or Rasmus depending on how they do in the spring, and my third option would be the Skip. Your Thoughts?? |
Jeff Gordon: Can Skip hit over the long haul? He has come a long way. Barton has decent on-base numbers in his history, but limited exposure to pitching above the Class AA level. La Russa will pick the best on-base guy available.
I'd rather see Ankiel hit two, getting fastballs ahead of Albert. |
|
| wade: SPORTS FUTILITY- see Arizona Cardinals, last home playoff game 1947. Bill you should be ashamed,NFL you should be ashamed, milking so many fans for so long. SELL Remember "If we could build a dome in St. Louis we could get a Super Bowl? HA! |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams built their dome before the NFL starting offering Super Bowls as incentive. The league didn't even want St. Louis to have a team. So we can't be jealous of the Super Bowl in Glendale. |
|
| Ray: Gordo, this may seem crazy, but I think the Rams need a new head coach and I think we should try and hire Bill Cowar out of retirement. For a number of reasons. The Rams need some new energy and excitement and Bill just might do it. |
| Jeff Gordon: No, Bill Cowher will not come out of retirement this year to coach the Rams. He turned down much better jobs to stay in TV. |
|
| Mike Holmgren: I'm glad the Rams have decided to keep Linehan around another year. Now why did the 49ers have to bring that Martz character back? I used to have four games every year in which I didn't have to think quite so hard - now I have only the two Rams games. I mean those incessant, futile runs up the middle on first down, the running plays on third and extra long. Man, those Ram Sundays make for some easy pickings. But I'm gonna actually have to do some real hard thinking on 49er Sundays, now that Mad Mike is back in the division - what with things like motion before the snap, play action, and complicated offensive things like that. Gee, this really might just leave those poor ol' Rams in the cellar all by themselves, won't it? |
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, old Mike might want to retire now that Mad Mike is in SF and Arizona is turning the corner. The NFC West could be a lot tougher next year.
Not good news for the Male Sheep, BTW. |
|
Ryan: Alright Gordo, question of the day.
Do the Blues make the playoffs? Yes or no. |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes -- Despite what we've seen lately, I believe they can generate the offense needed to get there. I like Murray a lot. |
|
Tom: Hey Gordo,
TLR recently said that he feels the Cards can compete in the NL Central, but that the margin of error for this team is smaller than that of others.
Looking at the other teams on paper, it looks like the Cubs and Brewers have us. But the game isn't played on paper, fortunately. A lot of ifs on this team, but a lot of players with a ton of upside.
What are your expectations of a full year from the following players:
Thanks,
tom |
Jeff Gordon: Good question -- and one that will likely come back to bite me if I guess wrong on players!
And these are just guesses:
Brendan Ryan: Solid utility guy, hits .260 or .270, no power. Minor league numbers indicate he'll hit some.
Ryan Ludwick: Tom Brunansky Lite? Maybe. In 637 career big league ABs, he has 28 homers and 98 RBI. Needs to wear out lefties to break through this year.
Rick Ankiel: Young Musial could break out this year and break the bank on his next contract. Even with all those strikeouts, 30 HR and 100 RBI are quite possible.
Chris Duncan: If he's healthy, he becomes Adam Dunn.
Adam Kennedy: He can't possibly be finished, can he? How did he get old all of a sudden? Maybe he'll get back to .255 or .260, playing just well enough to stay in the mix.
Matt Clement: He'll get fatigued at some point, but he could start 25 or 26 games and win 10 or 12 of them. |
|
| paul smith: explain to me why the rams let madison hedgecock go he seems to be a great blocking fullback for the superbowl bound Giants. To me its just another example of how out of touch the front office and coaching staff are. |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams let him go because his blocking regressed here and he wasn't making a difference on the special teams. I suppose you blame the coaches for that. |
|
| NMBob: Since the Cards Troy Glaus is a 5 year guy traded during contract..he can file for free agency at the end of the season...despite the fact he implemented the 09 player option. Correct? |
| Jeff Gordon: No, he had to agree to the second year to make the deal happen. The Cards don't make the deal otherwise. |
|
Tacleberry: San Diego really moved the ball well yesterday, especially considering their personnel situation. Too bad Turner was channeling Linehan in the redzone.
Speaking of Linehan, how do you view his early moves, in terms of getting this thing turned around? I have to say that I am jealous of Miami, Baltimore, & Atlanta fans who get a chance for a fresh start in '08. If I had to bet on the Rams 2008, I'd be inclined to go with the "more of the same" line. There is nothing about Linehan that gets me excited. His offense is bland, his leadership is bland, and his personality is bland. Ironically, his record as a head coach, bland. |
| Jeff Gordon: Until the Rams get new, dymanic leadership at the top, it will impossible to expect huge improvements for '08. |
|
| Tom: What is your crystal ball telling you about Bruce Weber's future in Champaign? |
Jeff Gordon: He has to win next year with that recruiting class making a difference. In today's college game, back-to-back bad years aren't tolerated. He needs to make his own mark as a recruiter.
Mike Anderson is doing somewhat better, but he needs his first big recruiting class (in numbers) to make a mark. |
|
Andy K: Dear Sir,
Thanks for taking my question.
It strikes me at this point that our team is filled with many good but not great players in the outfield and in the middle infield, a great first baseman and a catcher, a pitcher who may one day be great, and a number of pitchers who may or may not be great again. I am still puzzled that we are not trying to sign a pitcher who can be an innings-eater. Do we really not have the money? |
| Jeff Gordon: Oh, they have the money. They argue there isn't quality out there. I would have signed either Lieber and Jennings just in case, then dealt from depth later on if necessary. |
|
| Jimmy: lots of free agents out there still without a home, anyone moving to st louis? think we are done? thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Again, expect a RH outfielder and/or a LH reliever still. Nothing big, but just guys to create more competition. |
|
| James: Any truth at all to the Kenny Lofton rumors? |
| Jeff Gordon: It makes sense, although the team does have a LOT of CFs. Kenny is a leadoff guy and there no current candidates on hand. But what if Rasmus comes to spring training and plays lights out? |
|
| CJ: Garcia, Colon, Weaver, Benson, Traschel, Fogg, Tomkow, Perez, all pitchers still looking, lets get one! any chance? |
| Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak is showing no outward signs of interest. Now, if he could get a guy on a no-risk minor league tryout, maybe . . . |
|
| Chris S.: With Paul Stastny out of the All Star Game, will Boyes get the call? Or does each team have to be represented? |
| Jeff Gordon: I would assume Marek Svatos would get the call from Colorado to replace him. Each team is represented at the game. |
|
| Tacleberry: I am not inspired by the Cardinals off-season moves, but I will tip my hat and say a job well done on getting this team headed in a new direction. I really feel like Mo trimmed the fat nicely. He didn't add any significant meat (especially pitching-wise) but at least we will see some different baseball next year. No more multiple pop outs to the infield by Rolen with runners in scoring position, no more Edmonds' afternoons of K's against lefties. |
| Jeff Gordon: But can the young guys do better? The idea IS to get better, after all. |
|
| phil: What are the chances of the cardinals inviting Juan Gonzalez to camp and if so do you think they will trade one of our outfielders to make room. |
| Jeff Gordon: If Juan Gone shows up, he will be there as a minor league invite. Then he would have to play remarkably well to make the team. Only then would the Cards have to decide what to do to make room for him. |
|
Pat: Jeff,
With the passing of Georgia do you think the hiring of a new offensive coordinator will be delayed? And of the realistic choices of coordinators available who do you see them hiring?
thank you,
A Ram's fan in Patriot country |
| Jeff Gordon: It would appear that none of the top offensive coordinators want to come here, so Linehan is likely to hire one of the young position coaches looking to move up. |
|
stevew: Jeff,
Wouldn't Encarnacion, if he cannot play, be on some kind of insurance program, and his pay not going against the Cardinals? What happens to him? How is he doing? Will he play again?
thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Juan E. appears to be done. You just hope he recovers sufficiently to live normally. I'm not sure how much, if any, contract relief the Cards will get for him -- and whether DeWitt will count his salary against the budget. |
|
Chris: Jeff,
If the blues continue on there current pace in 2-3 weeks they will be 10 pts out of a playoff spot.
If that happens..which players can you see them dealing at the deadline? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Blues won't make a bailout deals. But they could move players not fitting their future plans, such as Rucinsky. Backman will be shopped, for sure, and Jackman is a pending UFA who may not return. |
|
Tyler Durden: First of all...Nice job Eli! I have always rooted for him because of the younger brother thing (i can relate) and seeing him win last night was great. Now to more important things (baseball)...
Why don't the Cards at least see what Ryan Franklin can do as a starter in '08? Kinney will fill the hole in the pen...and its not like we don't need him. I would feel better about him as a starting pitcher than Mulder. |
Jeff Gordon: Franklin excelled as a set-up guy. Wellemeyer did surprisingly well as a fill-in starter last year, so he is positioned to take another crack at that.
If Kinney makes a full recovery, he could fill the role Percival filled last season. |
|
Bob McCabe: Jeff- Would it be crazy to bring in McFadden for that 1-2 combination or is that something Jackson wouldn't go for?
Also- Is Timmerman still in the area? Wouldn't he be a no-brainer to come in and help the O-Line a bit as a coach or is there something between him and Linehan? |
Jeff Gordon: I know if Timmerman wants to coach -- but that wouldn't happen here.
Drafting McFadden would be overkill. The Rams have an elite back in Jackson. The club needs to extend his deal and fill other needs. |
|
| Adam: Why do the Blues play so bad when there is a sell out crowd at the Scottrade Center? |
| Jeff Gordon: Andy Murray would love to know. |
|
jrocke217: hey gordo,
so how did you like the talk about jose oquendo recommending juan gonzalez & alex cintron to the cardinals managmemnt after seeing them play in puerto rico? some people compare it to the situation the cardinals had with greg vaughn in 2004. if signed to a minor league deal & he doesn't work out he can be cut, no loss or no gain. but if he's picked up he could take at bats away from other outfielders coming up.
thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Exactly. Juan Gone has some baggage, but he would be worth a no-risk look. And with Rolen gone, the Cards wouldn't have to worry about Cintron crashing into him. |
|
jrocke217: do you see maybe cesar izturis getting a shot at leadoff in the batting order sometime this season? he didn't do to bad of a job in venezuelan winter league play when stuck in that role.
thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: But his big-league OBA is abysmal. So, no, that would be setting him up to fail. |
|
| jrocke217: what is the real reason for the hiring of mike aldrete? just seems like a questionable hiring to assist with the hitters. is hal mcrae not holding down the job very well or is it more of a position to look deeper into the hitting stats? |
| Jeff Gordon: I like the move. I'm a McRae fan, but Aldrete is an old on-base percentage guy. He could be a new-age coach, using computers and such. Perhaps he bridges the gap to the "analytical department" that Jocketty didn't like so much. |
|
Dave: Gordo:
I made my first trip to Mizzou Arena this weekend for the KU game. It seems like Mizzou can't win the close games this year. Have you noticed this trend? My annual frustrations with the football program have been passed onto the basketball team. What do you think the biggest factors are? Anderson's coaching style, the team's lack of size, not getting to the free-throw line, all of the above??? |
Jeff Gordon: KU is about twice as good as Mizzou, so that was the big problem in this game. Free-throw shooting IS an issue, since the team's best player, Carroll, is a liability at the line.
The bigger issue with this team is its inability to play better on the road. With experienced guards, the team need to play better at places like Iowa State.
Next year will be big for Anderson, since he will finally bring in enough size to compete. |
|
Gerry Dangerfeld: GOrdo,
IS there a problem in the dressing room, possibly lingering from the Weight trade? Or from trade they may end up happening? |
| Jeff Gordon: McDonald energized the offense since coming for Weight, so that isn't an issue. Doug lacked confidence this season in this system, so thta's not it. I do think the defense needs some freshening up. Wagner's puck-moving skills are missed. |
|
STL Mike: Regarding the Rams' Offensive Coordinator job:
1.) Who do you THINK will be hired? And...
2.) Who do you WANT?
Chow is going to UCLA and Cam Cameron probably to Baltimore, so I think that leaves Ken Zampese and Brian Billick as our two best remaining options.
I really hope it's Ken Zampese. He would be a great fit... the guys liked him, and he did well with Palmer in Cincy. His play-calling would be so much better! He has good ties with the Rams. Bring him in, Linny! |
| Jeff Gordon: Of the likely choices, Zampese IS a good fit. Experienced coaches aren't coming in here. Zygmunt is a fan of the kid, so that helps. Maybe, just maybe, he could energize the offense and salvage next season. |
|
Wes: I think the Cards and Blues both still have moves to make in my opinion...
The Blues could use another scorer. Are they looking at anyone that you know of? Any news on the trade front?
And the Cards should still sign a pitcher and another outfielder (either a power bat or leadoff man)... do you know who they would be interested in?
Thanks, Jeff. |
Jeff Gordon: The team needs a more assertive player for the power-play point. Otherwise, I think the pieces are in place. With all the big-name offensive injuries in the NHL, the Blues aren't in position to add another shooter of consequence.
The Blues need to get their younger veterans -- Boyes, Stempniak, Backes, McClement -- scoring at the same time. The third line has good chemistry, it seems, but it hasn't produced. |
|
| Steve Kaupas: What kind of moves do you think the blues will make towards the trade deadline. Considering they seem to lack a leader on the ice to push them a little harder. Once Weight left leadership is at a minimum. LETS GO BLUES! |
| Jeff Gordon: There are many potential leaders. The team hit a rut and got bad goaltending for two games. Let's see which players respond in the game at Nashville. |
|
| Jerry Venteicher: When we will get a Rams coach that can win? |
| Jeff Gordon: In due time, you will get to raise that question with Chip Rosenbloom. |
|
tc22: Hey Gordo,
The Birds get Glaus for Rolen which I think was a great deal considering the circumstances. However, our starting pitching remains troubling. Mulder and Clement are reclamation enigmas and Carpenter will take a month or so to get going even after he returns in July. With only Wainwright who can be considered a good pitcher (though a 2-3 at best), how can Mo and the rest of the gang believe that Pineiro, Looper, and a collection others possibly compete in the NL Central, let alone be a .500 team in 2008? Is Wellemeyer or Thompson due for a breakout season as a starter? Are Mo and LaRussa still looking for a 2-3 starter in a trade or are they waiting for 2009? I don't think Tony would have returned if that was the case. Speak O Wise One! |
Jeff Gordon:
Cards expectations for Mulder and Clement are much higher than yours. At least one of them has to pitch well. Also, Pineiro is a huge factor. The club believes he can regain his old form in Seattle -- where he was better than, say, Carlos Silva or Kyle Lohse, two of the pricey '08 free agents.
I agree that one more starting pitcher would help. But the Cards seem ready to roll with what they have. |
|
tc22: Gordo,
Who in the Cardinals farm system appears to be a real contributor in late 2008 and/or 2009? It appears that our overall farm system is NOT a strength of this organization like it was years ago! |
| Jeff Gordon: But the organization has made great strides the last two years. Any of the stars at Springfield last year -- Rasmus, Mather, Anderson, Garcia, Perez -- could become factors in the near term, one way or another. |
|
Mike K: Gordo-
Sure seems like the sky is falling at Scottrade Center. Looks like us Blues fans are getting a hard reminder that this is still a team going through a rebuild. Early season success sure seemed like the team had found some magic, but this string of really bad games leaves lots of doubts and questions about Hannu, Marek, and quite frankly the coach. How can the PP be this bad every year?
But it's more than that. Those "Blue Note Code" ads are a joke right now given how badly outworked the Note was on Saturday and the game before in Chicago. Sloppy passes, defensive lapses, etc. Is the sky really falling or is reality just coming back that this is a rebuild in it's early stages? |
Jeff Gordon: Teams hit ruts. In this case, the Blues may have to freshen up the mix a bit. The McDonald deal was a big, positive step. I expect the team to make a move or two before the trade deadline to free up spots for younger players.
This IS a process. E. Johnson and Perron are kids and Stempniak, Backes and McClement are still young.
|
|
Gabriel to Snow: Hello Gordo, first I'd just like to say "Thank you Goeorgia". Perfect she wasn't, but whether by plan or happenstance, she was at the helm for the most improbable, glorious & fascinating cinderella season in history. I loved the charachter of the coaching staff & players on that team. They were easy to root for. I also was VERY thankful for the St Louis fans. Been a fan since early sixties, but never lived near the franchise. She took my team to a venue with genuine screaming fans! I loved her for that. My main squeeze Kelly, who does live in St Louis, knows almost zero about football, but she knew something about Georgia, & was saddened by her passing. To me, the 99 Rams & the move to St Louis validated her ownership, & to me, she went out a winner.
On the practical side, is the timing of Georgias passing going to further hamper a OC search due to even MORE uncertainty around the clubs future? I believe Zampese is about the best we could hope for at this juncture. Any inside info. on his coming here? Thanks Gordo |
| Jeff Gordon: The fact that Linehan is entering the final year of his contract limits the OC search. Who wants to move here for a year? |
|
Marty: Jeff:
How much longer do you feel John Shaw will stay on
with the Rams?
Haz back as our DC in 08'?
Thanks! |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd like to see Haslett return. He is one Rams coach with some presence. Shaw figures to exit sometime this year, as long as there is a smooth transition. He seems ready for new challenges. |
|
tc: Jeff:
The Rams O-line has proven to be a serious weakness in the last 2 seasons. Do you see the Rams picking up a free-agent or using that Number 2 draft pick to bolster this sack-prone unit? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams will add invest in a third tackle one way or another. And the team will add interior depth. But the return of Pace, Setterstrom and Incognito from the injured list would go a long way towards fixing things. |
|
| Neil W.: Jeff, I will leave the ranting about the Blues current poor play to the other fans. My question deals with the league in general and the franchise in particular. Every year, the Red Wings run away with the division, if not the league. What is so special/different about their franchise? From their front office, to their drafting, their player development, their trades/acquistions/free agent signings, to their system of play on the ice? Every year they are a contender, regardless of how far they go in the playoffs. Is there not a model here for other fanchises to follow? I hate to brag about a team I don't like, but watching them play most nights is like a hockey clinic. Sure the Blues own the series right now, but their 2 loses have been blowouts. I understand that finances and personnel differ from franchise to franchise, but it seems to me the Blues and any other NHL team could learn a thing or two from them. Thanks. |
Jeff Gordon: The Red Wings have continued mining Europe for skilled players. And they take their time developing kids.
Did the Blues find similar gold with Berglund and Eller? Time will tell. |
|
JC: Hey Gordo,
I was just looking at the Cardinals projected line-up for next year. I guess it could be worse, but one thing that really stands out to me is that this team has absolutely no speed whatsoever. The Pujols, Glaus, Duncan, Molina, Kennedy stretch is brutal. It's sad when the starting pitcher is one of the faster players in the line-up. It's going to be a long and definitely SLOW season. |
| Jeff Gordon: The team needs speed, which is why kids like Ryan, Barton and Rasmus could become part of the mix in time. Ankiel has decent speed as well. |
|
| Josh: So, I'm assuming that Molina for four years precludes the idea that Bryan Anderson will do any catching for this club, despite being one of the highest rated catching prospects in the minors. Yes, there are some questions about his defense, but not nearly as many as some make them out to be. So packaging him off in a trade or shifting him to a different position seem the likely options. The first option would be acceptable, for the right player of course, but the second would be beyond foolish, unless he can play the middle infield. Which do you think is more likely? |
| Jeff Gordon: I see him getting traded at some point. Molina is an elite defensive player and an excellent manager of pitchers. This is huge. Anderson can hit, but can he play anywhere else? |
|
Kyle: Hey Gordo,
Thanks for taking my question...After watching all of the Blues games this season either on TV or in the ST Ctr. I'm still wondering when Eric Johnson is going to show some grit. All of the footage I've seen of his college career shows him plowing guys over and scoring with the big shot from the point. Game in, game out the rookie is getting mauled in the corners and has yet to let that 6'-4" 220 lb. structure do some talking for his game. Is this the EJ that the press was accustomed to during his draft run-up and his stint at Minnesota? I understand he's going to make some rookie mistakes over the course of the season but I'm totally seeing a different player that what the club had touted him to be. What's your assessment? |
Jeff Gordon: The kid has made huge strides playing his position, playing the puck and moving the puck. He is light years ahead of a young Chris Pronger in that department. As for the physical stuff, that will come as he matures. The Blues have lots of guys to bang. The team needs somebody to make good plays in his end and create plays at the other end.
It starts with the puck. Just ask Barret Jackman, a tough guy struggling to make plays on the puck and with the puck. |
|
Steve in Rochester, NY: Gordo,
Any news from the meeting of the minds last week, specifically on the OC position? As usual the Rams seem to be wasting a lot of time and have only interviewed 2 candidates so far. |
| Jeff Gordon: It doesn't appear major changes will occur, since Shaw is on his way out the door. So Linehan will take what he can get at OC and take one more shot at being a head coach. |
|
mr. starks: Hey Jeff,
Do you believe that if and when the Rams are sold that they will remain in St. Louis? I'm sure nothing will immediately happen but I live close and really enjoy a 4 hour drive to a game each year and don't want it to be a trip across the country. |
| Jeff Gordon: St. Louis is a decent NFL market, but its stadium could be obsolete within a decade. As long as LA lacks a team, Rams fans should fret about the long term. |
|
| JD Clark: Gordo, thanks for the great forum and your insight. Any word on the OC position. It seems that many of the candidates are getting locked up quickly by other teams. Also, with the draft being so deep in quality RBs, do you see the Rams drafting one in the middle rounds? Finally, do you hear any rumours about possible trades involving the Rams such as trading for a quality #1 or #2 receiver? Thanks again! |
| Jeff Gordon: With Jackson, Leonard and Pittman, the Rams have good young RBs. As deep as the draft is, I look for the Rams to fill other needs high in the draft. On the second day, anything is possible. |
|
Jeff\San Jose: Hi, Jeff,
I did some rough calculations regarding the tax implications of Chip Rosenbloom and sister keeping the Rams following Georgia's death (no, I'm not a finance guy). Given that the Rams are worth around $900 mil, with their stake at around $550 mil. Current tax law, I believe, would leave then liable for something like $200 mil in estate taxes.
How can the Rosenblooms possibly keep the team with such a debt?
Thanks in advance. |
| Jeff Gordon: We'll see soon enough if the implications are really that severe. Early indications are that Chip won't be forced to make a quick sale for the reasons you mentioned. |
|
jeff pan: JG:
what is the chance for us to get Bay and Morris from the Pirates for Duncan or Ankiel + a few AAA prospects? This will great ly enhance our chance not only to win the central but also compete in the playoffs. Please comment? |
Jeff Gordon: Fans seem way more interested in those Pirates than Mozeliak at this point. He doesn't seem inclined to deal either Duncan or Ankiel at this time, despite the left-centric outfield.
A minor deal for Morris could make sense if the Cards get to spring training and realize they are really short on starting pitching. |
|
Nick (Cal): Hey Jeff, with free agency still a bit off do you see the Rams making a play for either Asomugha or Samuels at DB? I know we have Brown for a few more years, but he is 1 bad night from the Pacman vacation. One of these two players and a solid Strong Safety could provide a huge boost to a developing secondary. Add a solid edge rusher and you have what could be a top 10 defense.
On the offensive end, I think making an all out run at Faneca or Lija (in that order) would be a two fold move. One it shores up an ongoing weakness. Second I have a feeling the Cards (with Wiz and Co trying to get their former palyer) and Seahawks (trying to replace Hutch who they sorely miss) will be at the top of the bidding for these guys.
Any rumblings of if these guys will be on the radar of the Rams? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams will have to dramatically overspend to get an elite free agent at any position. This is a 3-13 team with a lame-duck coach and uncertain ownership. So I would be stunned if they got out on the front lines of the shopping. |
|
| john: will saint louis ever get a NBA team |
| Jeff Gordon: Only if one of the other franchises left. And even then it would be very difficult in this market size. |
|
Pete Wilson: Is there any rumblings on t he Jeff Weaver front or are they content with what they have in the rotation?
PS
You the man! |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd take a Weaver on a minor league deal, but he tends to need some ramp-up time to pitch well. And the Cards hope to add Mulder in May and Carpenter in July. Where this team may need help is early. |
|
| john: is saint louis too "hick" to get an NBA team? |
| Jeff Gordon: No, it just isn't rich enough. Selling lower-bowl tickets NBA tickets in this market would be tough. Just ask the Blues about that. Corporations have left, the economy isn't great. It's about money, not demographics. |
|
Tom: With the announcement of Yadi's extension, should we be looking for a trade involving Anderson that would bring in another arm?
Thanks,
tom |
| Jeff Gordon: If Anderson keeps hitting the ball, he becomes a trade chip. He falls into the Daric Barton category. |
|
| jn: I think this town / media is very tough on goalies. Everybody has a bad game, like Marek Schwarz. Look at Osgood here vs. now in Detroit and Lalime in Stl vs before and after. Sometimes too much credit / blame goes to the goalie, when it is such a team sport. |
| Jeff Gordon: True, but it's also up to the goaltenders to stop the puck. Neither Ozzie or Lalime got it done here. Neither was a positive difference maker. I like Legace and I still think Toivonen could pan out. Schwarz has come flaws that could doom him in North America. |
|
| Chris S.: I'm planning on buying season tickets next year. Do you know if the Blues plan to bring back the $7 seats? |
| Jeff Gordon: Too soon to tell, but the team does need to generate more revenue. The heavy discounting of lower bowl seats during the season has to be a big concern. |
|
Tacleberry: Gordo,
Please stop even hinting at Matt Morris! He is the pitching equivilant of Jim Edmonds, why would we want him back? He has gotten worse every year since he has left and he gives up a ton of jacks! |
| Jeff Gordon: Well, he would still be an upgrade from what we saw from Wells and Maroth last year -- and he would offer some insurance. I'd take him working with Duncan for one more year. |
|
| Jon: I loved the pick of Carricker by the Rams last year, and by season's end, he showed to be a great player this year. Plus, Ryan may have been the best "value" pick of the 07 draft. That being said, it is looking like a strong possibility that Glenn Dorsey could fall into the Rams lap. In my opinion, he is too good a talent to pass on, and I think Jake Long is much less of a sure thing, or impact player for that matter. What are the chances the Rams ask Carricker to drop the 20+ pounds he put on last year, in order to be around 280-285 and move back to to end? A young line with Pickett, Dorsey, and Carricker could strike fear into QBs and RBs a like for years to come... |
| Jeff Gordon: It's a thought. Carriker may be better at DE, especially in a 3-4. But if the Rams went 3-4, where would Dorsey fit. In a 4-3, the Rams would really lack edge rush with Little aging and Carriker and Adeyanju as the two young DEs. |
|
| Glenn Turner: Any word on the Cards adding another starter. I do like J Affeldt. He is a lefty. He can provide some starts and is a rubber arm in the pen. Any news on Weaver? Good news with signing Molina. Does it seem salaries are flattening out for your good to avg players but still flying for the really good players? |
| Jeff Gordon: Affledt would have been a good pick up, but the Reds made the move on him. I sure hope that didn't come down to just money . . . |
|
matt: What's a realistic prediction of a Full Chris Duncan Season?
.265
25 hrs
70 rbi
?
god i hope the avg. goes up. |
| Jeff Gordon: A full season would be much better than that. In 665 major league at bats, he has 44 homers and 116 RBI -- and he played hurt for a chunk of last season. |
|
| JT: Superbowl prediction?.. Giants or Patriots? And what do you think the socore will be? |
Jeff Gordon: The Patriots ought to win. But will the Giants power running game and strong "D" keep them from covering?
I haven't thought much about the score. Maybe 27-20 Pats in a pleasingly competitive game. |
|
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
Two Cards-related questions for you.
1) Should Troy Glaus' noticeble improvement in fielding percentage the last two years (almost equal to Scott Rolen during the same period) be attributed to Toronto's artificial surface, or do Cards fans have real reason to believe that the defensive dropoff at 3B won't be as big as some may think?
2) What's more likely to happen: Yadier Molina progressing into a legitimate No. 4, 5, or 6 hitter in the lineup, or Bryan Anderson becoming Molina's defensive equal behind the plate? (Can you see where I'm going with this?)
Thank you. |
| Jeff Gordon: Anderson will never have Molina's arm. He can get better defensively, but asking him to control the running game is too much. Glaus didn't get raves for his overall defensive prowess in Toronto, so we're reminded that improved fielding percentage doesn't reflect improved range. |
|
| mr. starks: Hey, do you think Chillar will be resigned, they will pursue a FA, or draft someone? If he doesn't come back, I heard Vilma isn't happy in New York... |
| Jeff Gordon: Chillar would be OK if the Rams go to the 3-4 and need more LBs. As for other free agents, again, expect the Rams be back at the end of the line for most of what's out there. |
|
| RamsDraftGuru63: If you had the final call on this years 1st round pick - and you only had two choices DE Chiris Long or DE Vernon Gholston - who would you pick and why? |
| Jeff Gordon: The people I trust rave about Long. But if the team moves down a few slots, the equation could change. |
|
| dan: care to comment on the $$ given to the Red Birds Catcher? Seems like he could have broke the bank if he had a great year hitting, but if he stays the same he makes more than he might have otherwise? Agree? |
| Jeff Gordon: Good assessment. He will never become a "plus" offensive player that commands huge dollars, but his value to this team is high. La Russa and Duncan can finish their careers here with a great catcher. |
|
| Tony: Hello J.G. Do you know If Chip has any idea on how unhappy we are w/Loseahan, or the horrible coaching and horrible personel decisions that were made for his team. And why is this H.C. hiring offensive assistants w/out any input from a not hired O.C. who is supposed to have complete control of the offense. I wish he would atleast put Kroneke in charge of making the team decisions until a true GM is hired. And do you know if Kroneke likes the present front offce. Thanks for your time. |
| Jeff Gordon: Kroenke can't be happy with the results. His role (or non-role) in the transformation will be interesting. Stan is a smart man, so Rams fans can only hope that Chip listens to him. |
|
| Theslider: Jeff: Do you serioulsy believe the Cardinals are better off this season after the acquisitions of Clement and Glaus or are you just being overly optemestic? |
Jeff Gordon: These are nice additions, but they won't make or break the team. The key factors are Mulder and Carpenter getting healthy and the younger players coming through. If those two things happen, the team has a chance. If they don't . . .
That is all for this time. See you next week! |
