Tim: Well here we are. A few days away from spring training and we look back at another offseason filled with dumpster players and false hope. Now Im not going to be Immature or whinny here against Dewitt and Mozeilak even though it WILL sound like it I just want to state my thoughts.
1. We didnt trade for Holliday. Im sorry but that was stupid. Ludwick came out of nowhere and did what he did who knows if he can do it again no offense to him but hes a question mark. Schumaker is probably now a 4th outhfielder at best in a crouded area for the Cards so keeping him makes no sense to me and Boggs was just a throw in. So we basically missed out on an elite cleanup hitter to protect Pujols and for what. Because we didnt want to lock up long term an elite hitting outfielder. So basically .MONEY
2. Traded for Greene. Stupid in my mind. Another one year rental so now we need another SS for next offseason to add on to needs and we added a low average, low on base percentage, high strikeout guy to a lineup that already strikes out alot and needs some guys to get on base for Albert but dont have. And hes being paid 6.5 million for all that when we could of just forked an extra 3.5 million at Furcal. So again another Cheap one year fill in. But hey thats 3.5 in Dewitts pocket
3. Signed Miller and Ring. Seriously is this really an upgrade over Villone and Flores? Ones 35 and has shoulder problems and the other one had and 8.46 ERA. And why? They were cheap
4. We STILL need a SP, a reliable 2b, and and experienced closer and we dont have them because why? They cost money and they dont want to spend the money to have a good team
So my offseason outlook: F. They Apparently were aggresive with Rodrigez and Fuentes but didnt go that extra step to get them. They put a team together that competitive enough to keep fans thinking they might make the playoffs therfore fans would come to games and waste their money but they didnt take the incentive to get this team in the playoffs at all costs. One more thing. Does Dewitt not relize that if he gets this team in the playoffs that its more tickets that he sells and therfore more profit made? Um Duh. Hes a terrible owner and I wish he would sell the team and leave us all alone.
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt is a terrible owner? I guess a World Championship, the first since 1982, doesn't impress fans. Whatever.
If the Cards traded for Holliday, then the team would have had to extend him for HUGE dollars at the one position where this team has high-end, long-term talent. I'd rather keep Ludwick, Schumaker, Ankiel, Rasmus et al -- because that will be one of the most productive outfields in the majors. When it comes time to trade one of those guys, Mozeliak can fill a more pressing need.
Brett Wallace doesn't run like Holliday, but he might hit like him in a year.
Greene's shortcomings are obvious and I like Furcal well enough. But Rafael wanted to stay in LA. The Dodgers were willing to go long term with him despite his age/injury issues. Greene will offer an offensive upgrade over Izturis. You're right about the position, though -- the Cards will be back to Square One in a year, because Pete Kozma is still a ways off.
I agree on the LH relief pitching. That still must be addressed.
I agree on the starting pitching. That still must be addressed.
Kennedy hit .280 and played fine defensively last season. If he does that again -- and he has done it almost every year in the majors -- the Cards will be fine there.
The Cards offered more guaranteed money to Fuentes than the Angels did. He wanted to play in California. After Fuentes, the potential FA closers were pretty iffy.
This is another position that could be addressed if Perez and Motte struggle.
The unresolved issues will be fun to track, because a lot of good players are unsigned and a lot of teams are still looking to dump salary. There will be ample opportunity to adjust the roster.
BrandonRAMS: Hi Gordo,
With Warner uncertain in coming back and Haley getting promoted to HC of the Chiefs, leaving a spot open for OC. How about Martz getting the chance to reunite with Warner? It sounds like a good fit, back in St.Louis Warner put up the greatest numbers of his career. Plus Arizona is a passing team(even though they are not trying to be), and who wouldn't want a offensive passing guru in Martz. Would we be able to see "THE GREATEST SHOW ON TURF(Grass, AZ don't have turf)II". Whats your thoughts on this take?
Jeff Gordon: Martz also told the world that Kurt was finished. I expect Whisenhunt to keep that hire within his coaching family.
elvis26: are the cards going to bring in any 2nd basemen to compete with adam kennedy? also will the cards trade 1 of their outfielders for a starting pitcher? also what are the cards chances we will sign joe beimal or will ohman? thanks
brian
Jeff Gordon: I can't believe this team hasn't jumped at one of the better unsigned lefties. Fans can only hope that one of the current lefties comes up lame to force the team's hand.
At some point, Mozeliak will have to trade outfielders -- unless a bunch of players get hurt. And pitching is his obvious need.
Competing with Adam Kennedy: Skip Schumaker!
Tim: I read that last fall the Rams were offered a first rounder by possibly Tennesee for Holt. My first question is why didnt they take that? My second one is can we still get it? I would love to see it Tennesee is at 30 so I say we draft Phil Loadholt there and Herman Johnson at 35. The bot of them are monsters and very physical. Then If we could sign Jason Brown for center I like the look of our line.
Jeff Gordon: Tennessee offering a No. 1 pick for Holt? That is one of the most amazing things I have ever heard. If the Rams really passed on that, it was owing to the uncertain management structure. Now that Zygmunt is gone, Devaney has full control of the football operation and the new coach is in place, the organization is in place.
One popular theory from inside Rams Park has the team moving Holt's money, drafting Crabtree and then adding a later first-round pick to take a tackle or MLB.
Ray: Gordo:
I read Jim Thomas article regarding the cap. Bottom line is we have to trade Holt and/or Pace. I know it's easier said than done. But Jim mentioned that Tennessee had offered their first round pick last year for Holt. I would reignite that trade possibility with Tennessee. I would even take a second round pick for Holt, and I think a team might be willing to do that. With three picks in the first two rounds, we could draft Crabtree at No. 2, and could also grab an offensive linemen to replace Pace, and an impact defensive player. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Sounds like a plan. The tougher call is Pace, because left tackles are so hard to come by. What if O.P stays healthy and plays like he did at the end of last year?
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
Looking at the Cards' No. 1 picks from each of the last four annual MLB drafts, the only one not getting an invite to camp this spring is Pete Kozma (2007). This has to be a little bit disheartening for Kozma, considering at one point last summer he and Brett Wallace were sharing the same infield at Low A Quad Cities. Wallace his since leaped ahead of Kozma. (But I suppose to be fair to Kozma, he was drafted straight out of high school while Wallace had three years of college ball under his belt.)
So let me ask you a couple of questions. How critical will it be for Kozma to break out this season, wherever he may be? (Or maybe a fairer question to ask is what sort of offensive numbers will the Cards want to see from him in 2009?) And where will he be to start the season? Palm Beach or Springfield? Surely he won't start at Memphis ... or will he?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Kozma is a long ways off. He ought to start at Memphis and put up really good numbers before he tries to play at Springfield.
He is due to make the jump offensively, as Daryl Jones did last year. If he doesn't, then it might be time to adjust expectations downward for him.
That pick didn't excite me at the time because the Cards passed on high-end pitching to save money and fill a long-range need.
Brett: If you were in charge of the Cardinals, would you be happy with what you've done this offseason? Be honest. What would you have done differently?
Jeff Gordon: Right now I'd have Looper and Ohman under contract, shoring up the rotation and the left side of the infield. And I would be monitoring Chad Cordero carefully to see how his rehab from shoulder and arm surgery is going.
Otherwise, I agree with the concept of hanging onto the OFs and seeing how it all plays out. There are still moves to be made, but I would have done a few more coming into camp to create more competition and trade leverage.
Tim: So who,s you best guess on who will get released. Right now I would say Bennett, Chavous, Little, mabye even Tinoisamoa and outside chance of Pace. Although I think he got a few years left in the tank. he played well when he was on the field but he just needs to be on the field.
Jeff Gordon: The cap savings on Little aren't great enough to justify his exit. The cap savings on Pace would be great, but can the team find a sure-fire replacement. Pisa, Chavous and Bennett are all strong possibilities to go. Holt we've already discussed.
Tackleberry: It will be very interesting to see what early moves Spagnuolo/Devaney make with regards to releasing players. There is a lot of dead weight (mostly players past their prime) on this team. That being said, do you think the lack of consistency displayed by the rookie receivers last season will weigh on the Rams decision to release or trade Holt? Even if the Rams draft Crabtree, they'd be relying on three WR's with no more than one year's experience, and that hurt them at times in '08.
Jeff Gordon: Holt's injury history, high salary and obvious unhappiness add up to a departure. At least one of the high-priced veterans has to go and Torry is the most easily replaced.
Tackleberry: Do you think the Rams will ever try and fill their need for a consistent kick & punt returner? The only position in Saint Louis has been more of a revolving door is the Cards 2nd basemen. And at least some of the 2nd basemen have been decent.
Jeff Gordon: There is some sentiment about trading back from the second overall pick and targeting Maclin.
gnykin2: I understand the Cardinals owners need to run a successful business. But do you think the Cardinals are waiting out the market, but are willing to add payroll, or do you think that this is it? I know Spring Training hasnt started, but the fact that so many Relievers are just dangling out there (See: Ohman, Will; Biemel, Joe) I am really starting to lean towards cheap...
Do you know if season tickets are down for this year compared to last?
Jeff Gordon: The team is projecting an overall attendance decline of 400,000, owing to the economic collapse. I'd argue that this franchise is strong enough to buck the national trend, exploit the depressed marketplace, add some more talent and head off some of that decline by winning more games.
I do think you will see other teams dump salary this year, more than normal. So there will always be opportunities to buy help as needed.
Mark: Gordo, At this point are the Cards satisfied going into the season with a cast of thousands as their closer. Any interest brewing Izzy either for Cards or anybody else? What's the latest on Carpenter? And chances Looper will resign as a Card? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Izzy is one of many former all-stars relegated to considering minor league offers. His best bet might be waiting to see if somebody gets hurt.
Looper's seems unlikely, since another team is bound to make him an offer soon.
Carpenter is ready to start spring training, but I wouldn't get excited about him until he has made 10 or 12 regular season starts without incident.
Tackleberry: Do you think that another season that results in missing the playoffs will completely sour a very loyal Cardinal fansbase? I mean how many times can we be Charlie Brown to ownership's Lucy. They hold that football every winter and we come running only to have them yank it away at the last second. Of course, this happens after they have our ticket renewals.
Jeff Gordon: Completely sour? No.
Make a dent in the fan base, in this tough economy? Yes.
But fans who base their satisfaction level on the Hot Stove League results won't like this regime. Much more emphasis is placed on player development, which isn't as sexy.
This season will be an excellent test of the new approach, given the need to find a short-term 3B, a closer and a starting pitching depth internally.
Tim: So do you think theres a remote chance we could sign Haynesworth? If things are done right this offseason we could get cap space of about 30-35 million. You figure he signs for about 13 million and we still have money to bring back Bartell and Atogwe, Sign guys like Jason Brown, Vilma, Ward and Butler. That might be a little too optimistic but if im Devanney I definitly look to sign Haynesworth. Hes a game recking franchise DT to build a defense around. Him Carriker(healthy) and Long could cause Meyham up front and could protect the LB's to make plays. Its fun to think about
Jeff Gordon: That is too big a ticket. A team with this many needs can't sink it all into one guy. To get to $35 million in cap space, a lot of vets would have to go -- leaving big holes at OT and DE in addition to WR.
MNCardsFan: Is it possible that we won't see a trade this Spring? I just read on MLB.com that Schu is planning on putting in significant time at 2B this Spring, possibly looking ahead to 2010. I know that his bat is much more valuable at 2B, but it seems like a long shot that convertion can be made. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: I've always dismissed this possibility, but TLR really, REALLY wants options to Kennedy. He will go to great lengths. Skip could put up Kennedy-like offensive numbers and add an option in the leadoff slot. But can he turn the double play?
Even if Skip plays there, you could still see an OF trade. Players are stacking up there in a hurry.
MNCardsFan: I have convinced myself that the Cards have enough depth at starting pitching, although largely unproven, to fill a competitive rotation this year, but I am very concerned about the lack of LHP. Because of Garcia's surgery, there will only be 4 LHP in camp and one is non-roster invite Ian Ostlund. Is Ostlund a viable option? Do you see an aggresive addition here if any of these LHP struggle this Spring?
Thanks for all the hard work Gordo, it is greatly appreciated up here in MN!
Jeff Gordon: To me, the Cards lack a real No. 1 or No. 2 option from the left side of the bullpen. Perhaps the current group will prove me wrong, but your fears are well-founded.
Timmy Z: Gordo:
Let's say the Blues jump over a couple of teams in the next coming weeks and we are in the thick of this playoff race. Hypothetically who is the one guy you go out and trade for? I'm pretty sure the Blues aren't going to be buyers but I feel like using my imagination today.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: I would a more experienced goaltender, just in case. It sounds like that Manny bridge is burning.
Ray Fields: Gordo,
Anyone catch yours eyes that has run out of options this year? Personally I like Barmes from Colo and Andino from Fla. I just wonder if there's even a possibility of either getting send down.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer our questions,
Jeff Gordon: Barmes comes up a lot -- and for good reason. This team has Brendan Ryan still, but something tells me The Skipper would like another middle infield option. Unless Thurston wows everybody this spring, I can see Mozeliak monitoring veterans on other teams.
John Bouhasin: How can the blues think about trading Tkachuck, when they have soo many injuries and soo little veteran leadership. Further, its Tkachuck's best season as a blue. He has finally turned into an all purpose, valuable asset. We don't need the pick, we need the continuity and leadership
Jeff Gordon: This team needs to make a run for it and finish as high as possible. At this point, getting one of the top two draft picks is a long shot. Keep Tkachuk and play on. The only way the outlook should change is if the team suffers another total collapse.
Tim: Who would you pick if you could to bring in as a developmental QB? My pick: Graham Harrell
Jeff Gordon: But I wouldn't make such a move on the first day. Too many needs!
John Bouhasin: Can the pick we get for Tkachuck be worth the asset he has turned into. Crombeen and Winchester do not equate to Tkachuck, no matter how well Backes is playing.
We need McDonald, Brewer, Johnson and Polak healthy, with goaltending, not more picks.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed.
IND RAMS FAN: GORDO HELLO from richmond, IN
My question is what do u believe of our chances of drafting crabtree?? My point is simple we have holes everywere and i mean everywere!! So why not take the best player available esp when that player is gonna fill a Hole. Torry might have 2 good years left in him at best and my belief is he dont wanna be with us anyway hes getting older and wants to contend right away for another ring. Crabtree would look great n a rams uniform... not to mention can u imagine avery and crabtree in about 2 to 3 years..greatest show on turf 2 with sjax in the backfield. Sign Birk in that takes care of the center, give pace another year...Pace bell Birk and Barron we should be much better than weve been in awhile...My point is Draft Crabtree i dont wanna see him tearing us apart in seayucks uniform like Larry FitZ and Boldin are now....
Thanks,
Mike in INDIANA
Jeff Gordon: Your position has some support out at Rams Park . . .
James. Bridgeton: Sign Manny! Sign Manny! Sign Manny! Sign Manny! Sign Manny! Sign Manny!
please?
Jeff Gordon: In St. Louis? Um, no thanks.
dixie2003: Greetings Gordo, I'm really looking forward to spring training. I like that we have prospects waiting in the wings. Do you think that we will be relying too much on the unproven talent in our system, like 3b, OF, and especially the young pitching? Thanks for your genius.
Jeff Gordon: Many fans would say the Cards are over-valuing their prospects. The beauty of this season is this: We'll see. The Cards broke in 10 guys last season and the trend will continue.
Is Freese the long-term answer at 3B?
Will Wallace become a big-time hitter?
Can Perez, Motte and Kinney close out games?
Is McClellan a blue-chip starting pitching candidate?
Is Mitchell Boggs viable starting pitching depth?
Is Colby Rasmus The Future?
We'll see . . .
Griff21: Consider someone takes Lagace on re-entry waivers... our depth chart of goalies goes... Mason, Holt, Bishop, ...Who??
Jeff Gordon: If Legace leaves, I would expect the Blues to add one of many available veteran goaltenders on the market.
Griff21: Despite Legace's sour attitude and self pity he still has a good record while Mason even with his hot play, is still well below 500. was the record differential more due to the caliber of the opposition each goalie faced or was it team confidence( legace was the veteran starter goalie, Mason was viewed as the backup) or what was it?
Jeff Gordon: Mason is quickly fixing his record. Some of his early trouble was his own doing, but he always suffered from poor support. His results in '09 are more indicative of what he can really do.
Griff21: can we please please sign a starter? I know the market was slow but it seems players are starting to land with new teams. maybe not the top names but serviceable players are getting signed to decent amounts. As of now we have 3 starters waino lohse and welle. Carp and pinerio will not be in the rotation the entire season if at all. thompson, boggs k-mac & walters are ok for 5th starters but if we have to plug 2 of them into the rotation, that would be less than impressive.
Jeff Gordon: I would sign another starter, yes. You can always trade pitching if you have too much of it. How often does that really happen?
Griff21: there are at least 3 or so backup goalies that were on waivers recently. are we more likely to see one of them picked up or a trade for a goalie or hope we can get decent performances from holt/bishop/legace for the stretch run?
Jeff Gordon: If Legace and his contract exit, then the Note will go get somebody. If he stays, he will be insurance and Mason will start almost every game.
Holt is just an emergency guy at this point.
Rich: Good morning Gordo,
With the Rams having relatively little room under the cap, do you forsee a purging of the roster in the near future?
Even if the Rams cut/trade Pace and/or Holt, they still have a lot of holes and a lot of under achieving players on the roster.
Thanks for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: A fair number of guys will depart. But I've always argued that the key to next season is getting more out of the players still here. There is only so much to be gained from the draft and free agency.
Zac, TN: Gordo,
What is going on with the front office? Why can we not sign the positions we need? It bothers me that they are not taking a chance and trying to make this team better. There is nothing better than Cardinal baseball and I love it deep down. But when I see this GM trying to get by with what he has and he has told Cardinal nation that the he has a good payroll then what he is doing? I drive all the way from Tennessee for about 6 or 7 games every year to see the cardinals and if he wants to sit back and enjoy his money job than I will just stay at home and listen to Shannon on the radio. Never in my life have I seen a GM so scared to make a move. Instead of signing a SECOND baseman he is going to let an outfielder play it that played it 7 years ago! Geezzzz! Thnaks Gordo.
Jeff Gordon: He is not scared to make a move. Our nation's economy worsens by the week, so Cardinals ownership has closed the vault until further notice.
A lot has happened in our country since the end of last season.
Griff21: I listen to most of the blues games on the radio, for the first time this season I got to see the Col. game in person. That was a sweet game.
Crombeen has grown into one of my favorite players but the fight he had was pretty awful. having not seen him fight much how does he usually rate as a fighter? i thought he picked up a few more tips from his dad in that department.
Jeff Gordon: He is actually a pretty good fighter, for a guy not employed for that skill. He has turned into a handy third- or fourth-line guy, like Winchester.
Monty: Gordo, with only a couple days left before camp opens, any rumblings about Braden Looper? I still can't understand why we would not want to bring him back, given the current economics of the market, surely he couldn't be too expensive and it would appear he is one of the next FA starters who is likely to sign. Why would Mo wait until someone scoops him up, because then anyone else we pick up is presumably less desirable than the guy we could have had from the get go. It makes no sense to me not to take out the Carp insurance policy now, plus when has having excess starting pitching ever really turned out to be a problem. Who's to say someone else won't go down with injury other than Carp.
Jeff Gordon: I agree totally.
Tm: Your best guess right now who is the Rams 2nd overall pick?
Jeff Gordon: Crabtree, unless the Rams trade out of it.
Jesse: I'm not pushing for Manny or anything but why have we not ever got a big bat behind Pujols. Management said they would only spend the money if there was a guarantee it would help the team. Well everyone knows if would greatly benefit. Someone said it a week or two ago, and I agree, it seems like we are wasting the talent of Pujols because Dewitt doesn't want to spend the money. We have the best player in baseball for the past 5 or more years and all we have is 1 championship. That's riduclous. La Russa and Duncan can only do so much with what they have. I will always be a Cardinals' fan but it's hard to see a great franchise finish 4th with best hitter in the game. That's poor ownership.
Jeff Gordon: Actually, last year, that was an obscene number of injuries. The ownership had $30 million sunk into players not on the field.
Tm: The Cards are obviuosly starting to loose fan support. To me Dewitt seems like he is ready to blame the absence of fans on the economy and not the lack of free agent activity going on. So either was he wins, he gets his money and doesnt have to spend for free agents. Im just kind of stood out to me what do you think.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards aren't the Blues. They don't have to make splashy free agent moves to keep fans interested.
If the team plays well, fans will come. Maybe they won't come in peak numbers, due to the economy and the outrageous ballpark prices, but they will come.
If the team languishes, then fans will bail. The horrible economy will definitely speed that decline.
Emphasizing player development never made more sense for the Cardinals. If Rasmus, Perez, Motte, McClellan, Mather, Wallace, Boggs, et al bring new life to the team -- as expected -- then fans will shrug off the lack of free-agent activity.
redbirdswin: Gordo,
Has there been any talk regarding Carpenter's tentative throwing schedule for Spring Training? Usually starters are pulled after four innings or so at the beginning of camp, but will Carpenter be given even shorter stints, like an inning or two at a time? I know he's been deemed to be "on schedule" and "fully ready to compete", just curious if there will be any caution with him at first.
Jeff Gordon: He will be treated gingerly, yes. April is still a long ways off.
Jeepster: Jeff: Remember these comments?
"Last year, I thought the only way we could improve was through addition by subtraction. This year is different. I think we will identify holes and aggressively pursue closing them in a number of ways.
I believe we look at it as having a lot more flexibility going forward.
We're younger. There are still some things we need to do. This isn't a team that was able to sustain its early success for a variety of reasons. Without going into specifics, I expect those needs will be addressed.
I said from Day One we wanted to know exactly what we had. Today, we have a much better idea about players like (Skip) Schumaker and (Ryan) Ludwick.
I don't think that should be my compass. There is always going to be people who want you to do more. I want to see us stick to the plan and how we accomplish it. I know a lot of people interpret that as 'play the kids and do nothing more than that.' I can assure you that is not my position.
We didn't have a strong agenda in free agency last year because, frankly, there wasn't a strong free-agent market. This agenda is going to be different. We're going to have to address specific needs either through the free-agent market and the trade market. The impact that will have on payroll is significant."
What happened? ...and please don't throw out the excuse of "the economy" because Dewitt made a similiar comment after January 1st, the stock buyback took place last August and the Cards also supposedly offered close to 18 million for Fuentes. What's their excuse this week?
Jeff Gordon: Not to use the economy as an excuse, but the club is budgeting for a 400,000 drop in attendance.
But here is where I would agree with you: The depressed market for free agents has created an unprecedented opportunity to load up, particularly with rotation and LH bullpen depth. The gamble on, say, Looper and Ohman would be small.
There are plenty of guys on the current 40-man roster just taking up space. By being more aggressive now, the Cards could give Mozeliak tremendous leverage going forward.
On the other hand, the Cards will always have the option of adding talent by spending money. That will be the case all year, given the financial concerns of other teams.
Given that, DeWitt's stance isn't as offensive as many fans believe.
jccardinalfan: I am still curious...why not Manny?? I know we have a ton of outfielders, but that could open up some trade options and make us a team to beat in the league with just that move alone! I know we want to build from within, but with our pitching the way it is...and I think it still will be a nice staff. Everyone would stop worrying a little because our offense would be able to shoulder a little more of the load with Manny in the lineup.
I know it is a pipe dream, but give me a reason that we shouldn't at least feel out the situation and see what happens.
Jeff Gordon: Hiring an aging, emotionally erratic player for $10 million more than your best player at a position stacked with top prospects makes no sense.
If this team is going to spend more money -- and it may not -- then it should spend on pitching.
Mike P: Mr.Gordon,
Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.
Do you believe Hall of Fame voters will continue to shun the "steroid group" as time marches on. With the recent A-Rod allegations, along with Bonds, Sosa, Clemens etc. becoming elegible will the voters hold to their guns or pick and choose which ones are enshrined?
Thanks so much,
Mike P
Jeff Gordon: Excellent question. It's one thing to keep McGwire and Sosa out, but what about Bonds, Clemens and A-Rod -- three of the all-time greats? Palmeiro, too, has the credentials to get in.
In time, voters will have to realize that abuse was prevalent and MLB chose not to contain the problem. But some voters may try to keep the whole lot of them out of Cooperstown, so it'll get interesting.
frankelsigep: Whatever happened to the rumors about Dan Uggla being on the market? Any chance the cards can trade one or two of their surplus outfielder for some consistency at 2nd base and an impact bat. I mean the Cards have gone through more second basemen, then Cub’s fans have excuses for not winning the World Series.
Jeff Gordon: Florida put the brakes on its sell off, but that could be revisited soon enough. Adding power at 2B would really help this offense, just as adding power at SS this year will help.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
How long until my nightmare comes true and I am sitting at home watching MLB Network on a Saturday morning and a breaking news story interrupts regular programming...you know who I am talking about?
Jeff Gordon: At this point, every major league ballplayer from the Home Run Era is a suspect. How can we sort it all out, with the bits and pieces of info we have? We know there is a big number of unnamed players who tested positive for 'Roids -- and there has to be a large number of players who managed to avoid detection.
Fans have to have to realize how widespread this is. I'm guessing most "guilty" ballplayers only experimented with the stuff because everybody else was doing it, since what Bonds did to himself has to scare people.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
In light of today's story, what does Skip bring to second base and what does he take away? I understand his bat will be more productive than Kennedy's, and he can fill the leadoff role and take some heat off of Colby...but what about range, arm, etc.?
Jeff Gordon: Skip is a great athlete and a training maniac. It will be fun to see what he does at the position. I never believed it would come to this, but now I am intrigued.
Bluff Boy: Yo Gordo,
Thanks for taking the time to take these questions. We were going to spend 13 Million of Fuentes correct. Since where is that money going now. The front office has people alot smarter then me running the show and I'm sure they new where the economey was headed before the offer to Brian. That being said why are we not spending that money. With the all-star game we are going to bring in a lot more money for this team. We are all still buying our season tickets just to get all star game tickets. Will they pick up some pitching help? They need it at both ends.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: In fairness to DeWitt, a LOT of damage to the economy has occurred since the offer was made to Fuentes. I don't accept that as a reason to scale back the payroll, since a front-running team would draw well even in tough times.
But DeWitt does have an argument for backing off his projected $100 million payroll.
CardsRedOctober09: Hey Gordo,
I read in another article on this site that Duncan said Kinney is not in the closer mix right now. Tony has stressed during the offseason he does not like the idea of Perez and Motte in the closer role just yet. If these are the cases, then is Franklin the 2009 closer or going to get alot of save opportunities? Should we start bracing for another 32 blown saves? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Let's see how everybody pitches. This this is wide open. Also, a wild card (Chad Cordero? Jason Isringhausen?) could still enter the mix if the early results aren't encouraging.
CardsRedOctober09: O wise and gracious Gordo,
It seems to me that the saying, "you can never have too much pitching" does not take into account realistic calculations. It seems to me the Cardinals could have a real problem if Carpenter is healthy and the Cards sign another starter. That would mean Pineiro is in the bullpen, pushing out either Motte or Perez (Franklin, Kinney, Miller, the second lefty, and McClellan are all locked in pretty much if healthy). La Russa and Duncan are going to use the closer-by-committee system and Kinney is supposedly not in the mix right now so that could mean Franklin gets alot more save opportunities. Could La Russa fall into the same trap this year because of his veteran preference? Are my fears justified? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Last year, the Cards didn't have a lot of options until Perez, Motte and Kinney arrived at the end. This year there are more options. I don't see any one guy getting the job by default, young or old.
Jayman: Hows it. Gordo how much of a hit against the cap would it be to cut Bulger? My feeling is that the Rams are not going anywhere next year any way.....so use that year to cut the crap from the team. I mean he's so beat up mentally its going to take a couple of years for him to get back where he was 5 years ago.....your thoughts......
Jeff Gordon: It's just not feasible, due to the length of his contract and the guaranteed money he is owed this season. Next year will be a different matter. In the near term, look for the Rams to add a better back-up, add a developmental quarterback and build the ofense around the ground game and play-action passing.
deebox: Hey Gordo some time back i told you that glaus had shoulder problems, and he had it when he came from toronto. But less move on we need a impack bet,and odog would be a good pick up. If the cardinals would offer a two year deal for 6.5 million a year i believe he would except. Everyone keep saying he wants eight to ten million ayear, but no one have heard him say it. Kenedy will dissapoint just watch and see, and Albert seem to me to be getting tied uf the support he is getting on this team.
Jeff Gordon: The Cardinals made a big jump in homers (141 to 174) and RBI (690 to 744) despite having lots of injury woes. There is a chance for more growth there this year, even with Glaus missing time in April. I would expect even more power in the outfield (Ankiel and Duncan returning from injuries, Mather and Rasmus fighting for roles) and a lot more power at SS.
After the 2007 season, I understood the cry for more help for Albert. Last year he had lots of help and had to rally to catch Ludwick in the team RBI race.
redbirdswin: Do you think Joe Thurston has a good chance at winning the Aaron Miles utility infield spot for 2009? It looks like he's put up decent numbers in the minors, but will it be enough to stand out among the likes of Barden, Ryan, and T. Greene?
Jeff Gordon: Barden's asset is his ability to play third, but necessity may force the Cards to develop Mather there as a back-up. Thurston could win the middle infield role if Ryan doesn't win back TLR's heart.
Greene could get there someday, but his offensive track record is still thin.
randy grossman: I would like to thank Mo for not caving in to quick fixes for dubious free agents. Stick with the development from within plan, spend the money on the farm system. In the long run we will have consistent winners and a steady stream of reasonably priced talent. This is the only way to keep pace with the big market teams.
During spring training good players will be cut and Mo can get what we need on reasonable terms. If $ 25 mil aint enough for Manny in LA what can we offer that is better?
Jeff Gordon: Did a fan really write those words? Or did Mozeliak weigh in under an alias?
Nathan: With all the talk about who the next closer will be, I remembered a guy who seemed like he might be ready for the job a few years ago, but I haven't heard his name in a while. Whatever happened to Dennis Dove? Is he even still in the organization?
Jeff Gordon: He washed out -- a reminder for all us to temper expectations of young hurlers.
Jerry from Memphis: Ok, who, in your opinion, will be our second baseman? Personally I am guessing Freese but do you think Wallace will pass him by? Also, do you see any real chance that Mather could start there? I love his bat and enjoyed watching him play here in Memphis but could he play third every day?
Also, do you see much chance for a trade this spring for more pitching? If a trade happens which of our player(s) do you feel most likely to be traded away?
Jeff Gordon: I assume you mean third base. Freese can supposedly do the job now with his glove. His approach at the plate still needs polish, but he is a big league talent. That said, I like the idea of trying Mather there for a month to develop his utility skills. He has already proven he can do some damage here with his bat.
Wallace would be a longshot to start the season with the team, but his bat should get him to St. Louis in some role by season's end.
Bud Floor: Hi Jeff, I am sitting here thinkinking of how appreciative all those who follow the Cardinals must be! The 21st largest market and the 9th highest payroll; what a benevolent group of owners! Then I think if the cost of pitching in 2011 is $75,000,000.00 which might be conservative without change and the team wants to keep Albert Pujols? The roster would be Albert another veteran, pitching and rookies and the Cardinals will still have a higher payout than marketshare! How many readers will lose money every year to support a game??? If we want to keep the Cardinals viable, would we not trade Albert as soon as possible to a large market team? Pitching is, has been, and always will be more than 90% of the game! Kudos to Coach Duncan!!!
P.S. What could we get for Albert?
Jeff Gordon: If it ever came to that -- and I don't believe it would be necessary, given the resources here -- the Cards could get four or five high-end young players for Albert and ride Wallace at first base.
Bud Floor: The Rams have rated the roster from the best player to the worst. Do you have enough insight to mimick their ratings? Could you make some good guesses(wearing your gm hat) as to what trades might be available to the Rams? Plus, talk is Richie is the offensive lineman with the highest grade for the past season. What have you heard about player grades?
Jeff Gordon: At times Richie might have been the best line performer, but everybody's play fluctuated. Any ranking would have to factor in age and competitive drive (to Richie's benefit) to professionalism (to his detriment).
I have to believe the rankings would reflect both potential, based on pure athletic skills, and actual execution. That is the tricky part and I could only guess.
Trades are rare in the NFL, but if Tennessee really wants Holt, that would be worth pursuing.
Bluesier1: Gordo,
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions. Who guards Cole Aldrich in tonight's game against the Jayhwaks? Seems to be a match-up nightmare for a lot of teams with his length. Also what is your prediction for the game? Should be an intense battle
Jeff Gordon: That is also a matchup nightmare for Mizzou, since the rugged Carroll likes to jump out high to pressure and trap and the longer Lyons has to stay out of foul trouble. The only good news for Mizzou is their increased depth up front. Safford has moved to the edge of the playing rotation, but he has the bulk to park behind him on the block. He could have a big role in this game. Ramsey and Bowers lack that heft to defend the post.
Mizzou can win this game by knocking down threes and taking care of the ball. Those two things would negate potential trouble in the paint. The Tigers have grown up on the fly this season, learning how to slow down and hold advantages they gain. That could make the winning difference.
Hoolie: Gordo
Why would the cardinals pass on the one year deal for Wolfe. I believe you should have at lease one LHP in the rotation. Oh, I know, their waiting to see how Carp does. Must be slow learners, remember last year? fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice....
Jeff Gordon: I can see passing on Perez for those years and dollars, but why not add Wolf? Unless this team can deal for a lefty starter, I see it having some matchup troubles in the pennant race.
B-Ball Fan: Every spring it seems there is at least 1 player that forces their way on to the MLB Roster ? Who will be that candidate this year besides the obvious choice in Rasmus ?
Jeff Gordon: Freese gets his chance at third. Todd could fight for a middle relief role. It's probably too soon for Wallace, but he could set the stage for his later arrival.
COGzilla: Just wondering if you heard any rumblings about some rams that might say 'adios' today??
Jeff Gordon: I'd be a little surprised if Wroten was still on the books . . .
Will: I know the economy is poor right now, but I am tired of the Cards using it as an excuse not to spend money. I think that it is a reasonable excuse for some teams, but not for the Cards. We have the all-star game, and some of the most loyal fans in the country. I believe that if the organization puts out a quality product people will come out to the ballpark inspite of the poor economy. We (fans) have been told for the last few years that 2009 would be our big off-season. All of the money in came off the books, and thus far we have been given excuses not big name free agents. The New York teams have not slowed down any. I am not saying that I believe that our payroll shoud be comperable to theirs, but I don't think that 110 mil would be out of line. I would like to point out that I do not blame the general manager. I personally think that he has done a very respectable job. I feel that his superiors want to field a team with more cheap home grown talent, but they don't want to have down attendence years when those teams are going through their growing pains. If you want to build from within thats fine, but be honest about it. I think that the Cardinals organization needs to remember that you get what you pay for, or should I say don't pay for in this case.
Jeff Gordon: The Mets and Yankees are opening new ballparks with enormous revenue potential. They have massive TV deals. And teams in a city that size isn't as susceptible to an economic downturn.
Kyle: Hi Gordo,
Do you agree Schumaker's greatest value is with the Cardinals, even if he loses his starting position? Given his defensive abilities for late innings and high avg vs righties coming off the bench, plus the fact he could learn 2B by 2010.
How many years do the Cardinals have Schumaker under control?
Thx!
Jeff Gordon: His MLB service is listed as 2.051, so he should have at least more years under DeWitt's thumb. That gives him great value, since he can do a lot of things to help the club.
Griff21: Schu... 2b or not 2b? that is the question...
Schu came up as a SS correct? what were the scouting reports from back then say about him? he transitioned to an outfielder and if you follow tlr philosophy, anybody can play the outfield.
Jeff Gordon: It's not unusual for a good athlete to move from SS to CF. Not everybody can play center field. Not everybody can cover both gaps and make strong, accurate throws.
The challenge at 2B will be turning the double play. The rest of it should be easy enough for him. He's a worker. He'll be out there all day taking grounders, if that's what it takes.
Griff21: What ever happened to Brendan Ryan? is he seriously so deep in the dog house would look at guys who have never played a major league game at second over this guy? I root for him and want him to do well but it seems like he is always overlooked
Jeff Gordon: Last year was a wash for him, for injuries and other reasons. If he comes back strong, does a good job at SS and handles his bat, he could earn a big role. It's up to him.
Griff21: say we bring in freese to fill in for glaus. how many games can he or another rookie play before their clocks start running. in the nhl kids can play up to 8 games(?) before they are officially rookies. otherwise they can be sent back to the juniors.
Jeff Gordon: It's time in the majors that is key here. Given his advanced age, I don't think the whole clock thing is a big issue. If he's the next 3B, it's in the Cards' best interest to find that out.
On the other hand, it makes sense to let him build confidence at Memphis and let a guy like Mather man the post on an interim basis -- unless Freese just kills the ball and forces TLR's hand.
Griff21: Its pretty clear if/when andy mac & PK come back they have a spot. but with the team rolling along like it is when statsny comes does he have a spot to come back to ?
Jeff Gordon: I think there is always a place for a versatile checker/penalty killer. Andy likes having competition.
Griff21: yet another question. Oshie missed considerable time earlier in the season, and he was a little banged up again recently. it leads me to wonder whats the max # of games a player can play and still be a rookie into next season?
Jeff Gordon: This will be his rookie year.
Greg G.: Greetings Jeff...Bernie M. points out that the Cardinals project 400,000 fewer fans for 2009. At a conservative estimate of $50 each, that translates into a $20 million shortfall in revenues. As a result, do you think the organization will "stand pat" on adding players until the season starts?
Jeff Gordon: I believe the Cards will be careful spending this spring, unless there is an emergency.
karmon: Good afternoon Gordo and thanks for your discussions. Last yr about this time I sent in a comment to Joe Strauss about how I felt the Cards of 2008 could very will get up to 90+ wins and I based it on the fact that I didn't believe we would have two pitchers (Reyes & Wells) lose 32 games between them as they did in 2007. If we would have just cut those two pitchers loses by 25% that would have done it. I did ramble on about some of the seasons in the late 40's and the 50's and he told me I was living in the horse and buggy days (lol). If it hadn't been for injuries and other things (blown saves) we would have made that easily. Well I feel the same way about this yrs. team. I do not believe we will have that kind of season out of the bull pen no matter who we have closing with the group that we have now. Again all we have to do is cut those blown saves by 25% and we are in the playoffs and I will predict we will not have over 16 blown saves out of the existing pitchers we have right now and just maybe we will have some one else come in before it is over. I am ready for the season to start right now. I feel pretty good about what we have on the field. I am sure you and others will find some real fallacies in this e-mail and I respectfully accept that but I AM READY.
Jeff Gordon: There are a lot of ifs here, but the Cards do have the ability to trade and spend to fill needs. That is huge -- many other teams have no such flexibility.
Now, if the team develops needs and management STILL stands pat, that will be an issue.
Andrew: Gordo. Love reading your chats. DeWitt owes us all an explanation.. or at least an apology. For lying STRAIGHT to our faces in the beginning of the off season and even a couple weeks ago. Our payroll last year was over 105 million.. it sits at around 92 million right now.. And yet we're out of money. Let's not forget he told us the payroll doesn't really have a limit if the right deal comes along.. and that it would slightly increase as it has the past few years.. and that the cardinals would not be affected by the economy because of the All Star game.. And if the new stadium is really dragging him down that much then why did we build it? I think I speak for the majority of Cardinal Nation when I say that I'd rather have seen a winning team at an old ballpark than a 3rd or 4th place team in new busch.
so.. Explain to me.. After having 3 million fans show up last year, AGAIN (in the top 5 of attendance of baseball I should add), how is there a 13 million dollar payroll decrease? Oh wait.. I think I do know why.. DeWitt got a 13 million dollar raise!
I guess the dry powder blew away? What gives?
I've given DeWitt and co. the benefit of the doubt this off season and have even stuck up for him to the other fans.. but this is ridiculous. There are still LOOGYs and starting pitching out there.. both of which we need desperately if we are to compete.
Jeff Gordon: Cot's Baseball Contracts, an independent site, had the payroll at $99 million last year. It may be lower this year, but the economy HAS literally worsened by the week. Layoffs keep piling up. A projected loss of 400,000 fans is no small matter.
iowacardsfan: Hey Gordo,
Thanks for taking my question. I've noticed the tough early schedule, particulary in April as the Cards face the Cubs seven out of the first 20 games. Given the need to stay competitive in the early going, what is the liklihood that a surplus outfielder is dealt prior to the end of spring training for some sort of pitching help, whether it be starting or LH relief?
Jeff Gordon: That could happen, but not just because the Cards face the Cubs early.
estretch80: if the rams cut or trade pace and holt that whould mean , we got rid of 3 future h.o.f. in two years! that is very dishearting and shows the rams have no loyalty what so ever! please start rallying for the rams to keep two main PILLARS of the rams.thanks gordo roy from jersey.
Jeff Gordon: Loyalty is great, but those two Hall of Famers contributed to a 5-27 finish the last two years.
Brian: Jeff,
I understand if you want to make Mason your #1, but what good does it do the Blues to send Manny down (obviously the goal is for someone to claim him, taking on salary)? Don't they still have to pay him the same salary, and it wouldn't they have been better off making him the #2?
What if Mason all of the sudden falls apart? Are any of these minor leaguers going to step up to the plate?
Jeff Gordon: They wanted him out of the dressing room. There was an outside chance that somebody would claim him and take some of his money, but just an outside chance.
They wanted him gone.
Brian: Hey Jeff,
Obviously it was huge for Mizzou to get Richardson, but to me there are still a large number of kids from STL that are getting away. Every year it seems that Wisconsin and Minnesota are pulling top talent from this area.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but Mizzou is getting good kids from KC, Texas and elsewhere -- moving the talent level upward.
mars: Gordo, I understand the fans outrage directed at players for being on steroids. The feeling is that it clouds records, achievements, and taints our national past time. A-Rod is the latest certain hall-of-famer to be trashed by fans and the media. And now, he may end up never sniffing the Hall along with Big Mac and possibly Clemens. But why do the players ONLY get this treatment? Why is it these players are the ONLY ones going to suffer??
Major League Baseball benefitted greatly from the "steroid era", did they not? Attendance figures soared along with offensive statistics, making the league a TON of money. The League should be getting trashed as well for ignoring this problem and turning their heads while it was going on, shouldn't they??
So because this was going on at a time when the problem was being "ignored", I have a hard time placing the blame solely on the players. And I have a hard time with the exclusion of Mac, Clemens, and possibly A-Rod from the Hall, when they played in an era that basically "allowed" this to happen.
These guys may have cheated to get their big statistics, but for all we know, the guys they were playing against were ALSO cheating, so wouldn't that even the playing field in terms of HOW the stats were achieved??
What are your thoughts? Are the players getting too much of the blame? And shouldn't the League also be getting equal blame for benefitting from this era??
Jeff Gordon: I agree 100 percent. The folks running the game let this happen. In fact, they encouraged it, despite all their denials. So the players ARE taking too much heat.
kickin it: will the cardinals have any one in attendance when mulder throws?
Jeff Gordon: I'd be shocked. He drove management crazy last year.
Cards4520: How much room do the rams have w/ signing free agents? Who do you think they will release for cap room if they have to?
Cards question:
Does this ownership remind you of the last years of the AB ownership? A GM who they control, fielding a mediocre team (at best), and basically taking advantage of the loyal fan base. Do you think they will be selling the cards in a couple of years? (God willing)
Jeff Gordon: As outlined by Jim Thomas, the team only has $14 million now -- of which $6 million would go to the rookie pool. So Holt, Little and Pace are among those who could go.
I don't see the Cards being sold. DeWitt enjoyed that World Championship two years ago.
Jeff in KS: Gordo-
I'm so glad we didn't go after Sheets the way a lot of people wanted us to! Anyway on to my question. What is the status of Pedro Martinez? Is he only interested in starting? He could make an interesting addition to the rotation/bullpen, if and only if, the Cards can sign him to an incentive laden contract. If he makes appearances and is effective we pay him, if not then we don't. Thanks for responding!
Jeff Gordon: Pedro could make somebody happy with a deal structured the way you mention. He may not have a whole year left in him, but he competes.
Bill: Jeff,
Do you believe after resending their offer to Fuentes, the Cardinals decided to reduce payroll 10% (or more) this season in anticipation of fewer ticket sales? This would explain the lack of activity this off-season. Do you also beleive that they will get their anticipated lower ticket sales only because of the fan's perception of DeWallet because he lowered payroll?
I believe if the Cards had spent what was necessary to field a very competitive team this year, Cardinal Nation would flock to the stadium even in this economy. I believe by angering Cardinal Nation, DeWallet has cost himself more money than had he followed through with his statement that the payroll "would be around 100 million again". Comments?
Jeff Gordon: First, I do think the economy has worsened. A lot of people have lost their jobs. And it keeps worsening That is a fact.
But . . . I believe if DeWitt lets the product really slide, then the lower attendance could become a self-fulfilling prophesy.
At the end of the day, most fans won't care what the payroll is if the Cards are fighting for a playoff spot in September.
BillP: Hey Jeff, I read in the Sporting News last month that they claim the Rams have a history of drafting the wrong player because they put too much stock in the NFL Combine workouts. Do you see this philosophy changing with Devaney?
Jeff Gordon: Devaney's last draft was stellar, so I can only speak to that. He did a nice job getting character guys and not going for the pure athletes with issues.
BillP: Hey Jeff, what's this about the Rams having the opportunity to trade Holt to Tennessee for a number 1 last year during the regular season? Who the heck in the organization decided against that and what's more frustrating is that the Rams didn't seem interested in utilizing Holt last year anyway so what gives? I was shocked to read that in Sundays paper. Your take on this?
Jeff Gordon: I was shocked, too. But nobody was really in charge of the Rams at the end of last season.
BillP: Hey Jeff, where do you rank the Blues in the NHL in terms of team speed? Top 10 team? Middle of the pack? Bottom Half?
Jeff Gordon: If Andy McDonald ever plays again, this team has at least middle-of-the speed. Erik Johnson is a "plus" skater from the blue line. He is missed.
I thought the Blues skated up and down with the Oilers quite well. That was a positive indicator.
BillP: Hey Jeff, one more thing, do you see Quenville taking the Hawks to the Stanley Cup during his tenure there? Personally, I'm going to say "Yes". What do you think? Thanks - Have a great week !
Jeff Gordon: Great coach. Will he get the goaltending he needs long term? That is always the issue with him, isn't it?
Cards314: With the outfield getting more and more crowded, when are they going to start trading some of these players like Duncan and other players who they know will not have a long tenure with cardinals because of players such as Colby Rasmus? Whats the likely hood of jarret haufpouir making a run for a spot on the roster and what are they going to do with bryan anderson who is stuck in AAA because of Yadier
Jeff Gordon: Hoffpauir isn't likely to make team, regardless of what he does this spring. He needs to play every day while Kennedy plays out his contract. He is a solid prospect, but he doesn't offer unusual speed or power.
Duncan could get moved once he creates more value for himself this spring. Or he could move into a platoon if Ankiel goes. Rick's inability to come to terms without arbitration this year is an indicator of how tough he will be to sign next year.
BillP: Hey Jeff, what's your take on Mike Keenan over in Calgary? I guess he's been doing so good, that we don't get to hear anymore good stories on him. Has he really uplifted his marketability as a coach around the league to the point that other teams maybe interested in him in the future as their coach?
Jeff Gordon: Darryl Sutter keeps him in line. There aren't many GMs who can do that, but they go way back together. His value is up, for sure.
Flotrain: Oh Jeff, here in KC we're counting down the minutes until tonight's game!!! FINALLY a time again when both are good at the same time.... Enjoy watching this team, my biggest problem is the lack of a back up point. Paul is NOT going to get it done facing better comp than Iowa St. The team just doesn't seem to rally around him like Taylor.... Ok, question is what are the chances Anderson jumps to Alabama or elsewhere? I was thought with him that year 3 would be the year when the Snyder mess was mostly behind and only Lyons and Lawrence were left. Losing Lyons and Carrol is going to hurt, but I like Ramsey and Safford and supposedly that DeWitt kid is supposed to be a stud... Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Anderson has a stellar class aboard this year, which would make it easy for him to wave off SEC offers IF he gets taken care of after reaching the NCAA Tournament this spring.
But it wasn't that long ago that Tigers fans were wondering if Mike was the right guy to get Mizzou back to its desired level.
Griff21: hypothetically say we are 6 points out of a playoff spot and the trade deadline is this week. what moves would you expect the blues to make? move KT, Hinote or other FAs? bring in a backup goalie?
Jeff Gordon: I would see the Blues standing pat. The back-up goaltender thing should be addressed sooner than later, unless Holt is really that good.
Lance Kille: With A-rod one of the 104 that was linked to steroids....what are the chances that Pujols is also one that would be linked?
Jeff Gordon: Albert was implicated, incorrectly before. The the substance issue was so huge in the game that almost nothing would surprise me.
jmfrank1: What do you make of this Adam Kennedy release? Doesn't seem to make any sense. The Cards won't spend any money on a decent free agent yet they release a guy who is owed $4 million and who was going to be the starting 2B??? Please explain this to me.
Jeff Gordon: Chalk one up for The Skipper . . . and disregard my earlier answers regarding Adam.
I surprised La Russa didn't play along for a while. Maybe Ray Durham really come here.
Brandon: With the club set to cut Kennedy, Are they going to bring an outside canidate in? Or go with essentially a rookie second baseman? Also I think Hoffpauir gets lost in the discussion a lot. Can you describe his strengths and weaknesses and handicap his chances.
Thanks
BK in AZ
Jeff Gordon: Hoffpauir does get lost . . . The Skipper probably is beating the Ray Durham drum. Not to mention Skip.
Andrew: hey gordo.. another quick question for ya if you don't mind.
Why don't we sign Durham? He isn't receiving offers.. he had a good year at the plate last year.. and it'd only be a one year deal. Him and Kennedy could platoon 2nd all year? We have to be seriously considering one of the FA MIs at this point if we are seriously considering moving an OF to 2nd, right?
Jeff Gordon: It's a nice thought, given Ray's power. And now that Adam is gone . . .
Brad: I've read that Chris C. is suppose to be able to have a normal spring training and be ready for the start of the regular season, is there any concern with him throwing to much and aggravating the nerve problem again. He hasn't thrown that much of the last couple years.
Mo has mentioned waiting until spring training to possibly make another move what pitchers are going to be available when teams figure out there rotations just seems we will be getting less then what we could have already recieved
With all the talk of Skip playing some 2nd base is this going to show Adam that the club doesn't trust in him and cause some early problems that the team doesn't need.
lastly, I'm ready to start watching the birds in action and love seeing some of the rookies getting the chances they deserve.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, it's evident the club didn't trust Adam.
With Chris, the Cards want to build up his endurance. But he will be handled gingerly, trust me. He wants to plow on and test himself, but the team has to be careful.
redbirdswin: I was a little surprised/intrigued to hear Skip will get a look at second this spring. Keeping Skip at leadoff and having Rasmus - possibly - in the lineup as well without the pressure of hitting leadoff can only help things in my mind. Not to mention Rasmus would look pretty nice in the 2 hole getting pitches to hit in front of Albert.
Do you think Skip will get some time in the regular season at 2B or will things in the outfield clarify a bit once Mo deals an OF or two?
Jeff Gordon: The Schumaker thing is intriguing. I kept dismissing it last year, but I forgot how little faith TLR has in Kennedy.
If the team kept Skip's spark and added Rasmus' power to the outfield -- in addition to Greene's power at SS -- then this could become a formidable lineup, even without Matt Holliday.
redbirdswin: Gordo!
Joe Strauss just reported that the Cards are RELEASING Adam Kennedy today, and eating his $4MM salary. What's in the works? Orlando Hudson? A trade for Brian Roberts? Or is Skip just gonna get a REAL good look at 2B now?
Jeff Gordon: I'd be surprised if there was a big-money solution here, especially with the team eating Adam's $4 million. So a guy like Durham makes sense.
Brent Williams: Gordo,
What are the chances that the cardinals could sign Hudson now that they are going to release Kennedy or what are the chances that we will see the Greene brothers up the middle? I know skip is getting a chance to show his work at second but he hasn't played infield since college. If you don't like any of these situations then who do you see playing second base?
Thanks
Brent
Jeff Gordon: It's probably too soon for Tyler Greene. Could Brendan Ryan come out a winner in this?
t-tal: From past interviews and such i read that Adam Kennedy was thee man for the job at second base and it was his job to lose. So, as you can understand my shock when i read this morning that Adam was being released. I at first liked the confidence we had in him in letting him feel secure of knowing he had the job but i also like the fact that Skip might get an oppurtunity. MO has made some moves and although other than getting Khalil, nothing spectacular, but these little moves i think help us in the long run. i think the biggest reason of kennedy's release was the idea of him not keeping the job and the effect on his attitude in the clubhouse.
Jeff Gordon: La Russa hasn't gotten his way on much this winter, but give him the won here.
Luke: Gordo:
WOW I cant believe the cards just released Kennedy and couldnt get one single thing back for him. I for one am glad but I would like to get your thoughts on this. Do you think that they were that impressed with Skip so far or just tired of Kennedy? Also who do you think you will take Kennedy's spot at second and should we consider Skip the leading candidate?
Jeff Gordon: I figured Adam would hit .280 in 400 ABs, then head to the sunset. His lack of zeal really rubbed the Skipper the wrong way.
Luke: Gordo:
Now that Sheets is having surgery and Perez signed with the Mets who do you think if anyone the cards should think about adding to their rotation? I just read a rumor that said it looks like Looper is headed to the Brewers I think now is the time to add or at least in by the time pitchers and catchers report. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I agree, but now the team will have to eat this Kennedy dismissal. That doesn't make it easier.
David from Columbia: Since, I'm sure......, Skippy will not be a starting 2B in the bigs, what about a deal for Seattle's Jose Lopez. They have next to nothing and are heading nowhere. Maybe big Dunc could fill their 1B hole? Only downside is he is cheap, so the Ms may not want to deal him. Thoughts O Sports Oracle?
Jeff Gordon: We know this team has OFs to move, so, yeah, maybe it's time to explore deals for a 2B with a real bat.
greg: What is up with larussa? He could have traded Kennedy and we would at least got something for him other than just letting him go. Either way we would have had to pay Kennedy's salary.
Jeff Gordon: There wasn't much the Cards would have received for Kennedy -- and eating the salary would have been a factor.
frankelsigep: With Kennedy's release, any chance the Cards trade for a 2nd baseman? Maybe Uggla? We have gone thru more second basemen, than Cub fans have excuses for not winning the world series.
Jeff Gordon: Something like that makes a whole lot more sense now . . .
Mark: Gordo - What are the chances the Cards will bring FA Mark Grudzeilanek back on a one-year deal to provide a veteran presence at second? I know he is 38 and has back issues, but he still has the skills.
Jeff Gordon: That's another good name . . .
Luke: Gordo:
Do you think the cards will add another piece to the bulllpen by the time pitchers and catchers report. I like Beimol or Ohman but what do you think they might cost and what are the chances one of these could be had on the cheap?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see something like that happening that quickly. Now the 2B thing is on the front burner.
Joe R. from Pa: Would it be fair to assume that the Cardinals front office, knowing they can't keep up with Chicago financially, base what they do or don't on what moves the Brewers and Astros make?
Jeff Gordon: I believe they will go the player development route regardless of what any other club does.
timkrumm: Is this another Cardinal front office joke? Let Miles go and then release Kennedy and eat the $4 mil! "There is no-one worth signing" Annual Joke.
Skipper's want list? Forget it. They know that I'll still go along with 3 million of other fans but someday we'll say enough!
Jeff Gordon: Actually, paying to make Kennedy go away -- and make La Russa happy -- showed some commitment to success. Baseball was put ahead of business.
Too bad this couldn't have been done before Miles left.
LOUMAR: Is Kelly Johnson of the Braves still a trade possiblity?
Jeff Gordon: Johnson would cost some pitching, I believe. There is none to give.
Kdaddy: this question may have been asked, but in regards to Kennedy....if another MLB club picks him up are we off the hook salary wise or do we get extra/ or their draft picks for the next season? What is the rule on this if any?
Jeff Gordon: Cards are on the hook, expect for the minimum.
Brendan: For as tight as the Cards are with money I am surprised they wouldn't accept a trade that the other team paid any of Kennedy's salary. Unless it is just posturing. Seems like a waste to me. I am hoping it is a precurser for a deal either a trade or Hudson signing about to take place. BTW at Fandango's WEd night if you want to meet us.
Brendan
Jeff Gordon: I got a SLU game that is a late one, so I may not be at Fandango's Wednesday night.
I, too, am surprised by the Kennedy thing.
Brian Hindman: Are the Cards getting ready to announce they signed Hudson to play second...seems extremely odd to release Kennedy at this point in time
Jeff Gordon: Yes, it is odd. It would be incredible to sign Hudson after eating the $4 million Kennedy makes.
Luke: Gordo:
I have read all winter that Uggla is upset that the Marlins wont go long term with him and that he wants out. Right now they have Cantu who can play second and they just traded their first baseman to the Royals and an outfielder to the Nationals. Duncan could fill those needs and replace Uggla's power. Would Duncan plus a low level pitcher be enough to get Uggla's 30 bombs in our lineup.
Jeff Gordon: Adding Uggla . . . that would make fans drool. And that would really change the offense.
Bill: Jeff, I think there was more to this Kennedy thing than most people realized. Even his teammates didn't seem to like him. I chatted with one of them after the LaRussa ARF event (a starting pitcher who will remain nameless) and when I asked him about Kennedy, he didn't hesitate and said, "We should get rid of him. F-- him, he doesn't want to be here, and we don't want guys around who don't want to be with us."
Jeff Gordon: First Legace, then Kennedy. Tough business, sports.
Roy from Wentzville: I know TLR didn't like Kennedy, but eating $4m seems bad. I would like to think we could have traded him for almost nothing and only eat $3m???? Maybe not. Have you heard anything heating up again with Atlanta? Maybe an OF for K. Johnson? Or with Fla for Uggla? Seems like Atl and Fla have traded with us a few times before.
Jeff Gordon: Every effort was made to deal Kennedy. Nobody wanted him -- probably because GMs figured this could happen.
Jerry from Memphis: Kennedy released? I am in shock! Who will be the Card's second baseman?
Jeff Gordon: TBA.
Griff21: After Bishop and Holt, what other goalies do we have in the minors that might amount to anything?
Jeff Gordon: The next best is in junior hockey, Jake Allen.
Flotrain: Don't know if you've covered this or not, but why wait til now to dump Kennedy? Obvious, TLR didn't want him and he didn't want to be here. Really wasn't looking forward to Miles or anyone else still in house to play there..... They eyeing Hudson or a trade? And, I hope moving Skip to second and Stavinoha to catcher opens up time for my man Barton.... I really believe this guy could be special under the right circumstance...
Jeff Gordon: Barton could make it if enough things happen, but his lack of power and base stealing ability (and lack of throwing arm) work against him.
Luke: It is official this offseason is already improved and the buzz around the cards just on this chat has gotten more exciting. I am glad kennedy is gone but I dont like eating the salary part but they offset for me. Uggla, Schu, Hudson, Grudz, Durham. Of these who do you think is most likely to start at second for the cards.
Jeff Gordon: Knowing the Cards' budget, Durham and Grudzielanek seem like more likely options.
Kdaddy: do you think we could bring Stubby Clapp back to cover 2nd for us?
on a serious note, what are your thoughts on this move making a trade before the season starts, that much more likely? The list of teams that are wanting to "clean up" is growing....I keep going back to Toronto, all the lefties in that bullpen, Aaron Hill at 2nd, they have plenty we could use in a reasonable trade. I've asked this before but it's never been answered, have we burned a bridge with the Jays after the Rolen/Glaus deal?
Jeff Gordon: I don't know that the bridge is burned. If they need an outfielder, they know who to call.
tb23: Nick Stav as a catcher?? I see the move of Anderson to the OF, but this seems a little risky. He has'nt played there since HS. What are your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: He has the body of a catcher. And it would help him stick as a utility guy. It would be a stretch to get him into a back-up role.
estretch80: gordo im sorry but i no longer have respect for you, if you are going to turn your back on pace and holt.
Jeff Gordon: Five and Twenty-Seven will make you willing to turn the page.
Luke: Thanks for answering my questions Gordo I know they are redundant but I am starting to get excited about this new 2B situation. Now all we need is a LH reliever and in my mind we can contend if Carp is healthy.
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Lot of ifs. Let's see how Mozeliak moves all the parts around.
roger from lake tahoe: I cannot believe nothing could be obtained in a trade for kennedy. if the team was willing to eat the salary, why release him instead of trying to get at least a prospect while eating so much salary?
Jeff Gordon: Adam has been available since the end of last season . . . so that option was exhausted.
Tonyhan: Who wins tonight? Mizzou or KU?
Jeff Gordon: Mizzou convinced me at Texas. They ought to hold serve. But KU will fly and down, too.
roger from lake tahoe: gordo, do you see kennedy catching on with another team? kennedy could end up the big winner here. do you smell a trade? thanks
Jeff Gordon: Adam hit .280 last year, his career norm. On the other hand, his unwillingness to compete for work would hurt him at this late stage.
Paul: How big a factor could Jose Oquendo play in helping Skip become a solid defensive second baseman? Is his coaching invaluable at this point?
Jeff Gordon: If anybody could do that, it would be Oquendo.
estretch80: it was because of guys like holt and pace , that this city got any joy from football. gordo im sorry but guys like you are the reason why st louis can lose another football squad. thanks a lot bud!
Jeff Gordon: Five and twenty-seven . . . even Joe Montana for traded.
roger from lake tahoe: freese at second, wallace at third to start the season? could freese make the move easily and has he played second in pro ball? barring a trade or signing, how do you see this lineup shaping up?
Jeff Gordon: That would be a reach, to say the least. But at least this team does have some prospects.
Gotta run -- this is a busy sports day!
