drelboc: Hey Gordo;

It seems that TLR believes Skip can make the switch to second base, else why put him there. I think Skip will have to prove to TLR that he can't make the switch and until he shows that he can't, the position is his for the taking. But thats my opinion. What is your opinion and insights of the chances of Skip Schumaker moving to 2nd Base and starting there on opening day?

Thank you Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: Our Joe Strauss has covered a LOT of baseball and he remains highly skeptical of the position change. But Tony enjoys being unconventional. Maybe this has the same chance of working as the Juan Gonzalez comeback, but it IS intriguing from the offensive standpoint. What about a Schumaker/Ryan platoon leading off and Rasmus batting second, getting lots of fastballs?

Michael Kent: Jeff ...

Give me your gut feeling here. Which Chris - Carpenter or Duncan - stands a better chance of a full rebound from surgery this season? And are the odds for either that promising? I know you've been hedging on Carp all winter long, but Junior Dunc had a more uncommon procedure done on him.

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Duncan seems fine, so right now there is no reason to doubt him. Carpenter has had so many different issues that it's to bet on him right now.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

I like to believe that I have enough happening in my life that the actions/inactions of St. Louis' sports teams do nothing more than provide a platform for conversations or fun-loving sports arguments. That being said, upon reading in Strauss' column on Saturday that the window for Izzy's potential return is still not nailed and painted shut, made my blood boil. Last year the Cards were comfortable allowing Eckstein, Edmonds, and Rolen to move on. All had been major contributors in the 2000-2006 era, all had experienced obvious decline. So why is it that this team cannot seem to move on from Jason Isringhausen? They guy is DONE. He has had some pockets of success, but ultimately injury derails him even if he looks good for spells. And even worse, the organization often has to forcibly remove him from the roster, as opposed to him bring honest with the club. The absolutely last thing this team needs as a storyline this spring is Izzy and his quest for 300 saves. Please, please, move on!
Jeff Gordon: I feel your angst. Izzy has prolonged a lot of baseball games in recent years. On the other hand, if he came in on a make-good deal with no promises, I could buy that. He is a good teammate. Maybe he could do what Percival did here a few years back. As for the closer's role, he would still have to earn it. Remember, TLR didn't rush him back into that role last year.

John Sheehan: Why has the PD not mentioned the addition of Josh Henson to Gary Pinkel's staff? The Columbia Daily Tribune has been all over this story, which many Mizzou fans believe is a significant positive for the program. Henson was an ace recruiter and tight end coach at LSU (which just happened to have one of the highest ranked 2009 recruiting classes in the country). Henson will be co-offensive line coach at Mizzou (he played O-line at oklahoma state, which Mizzou fans should not hold against him) and his recruiting connections will be a huge plus for Mizzou. Even though football and recruiting season are over, Coach Pinkel continues to improve our football program with a smart coaching hire.
Jeff Gordon: I'm all in favor of Pinkel getting some fresh blood on his staff. LSU's recruiting speaks for itself -- and recruiting to LSU is different that recruiting to Mizzou. The big bonus here is Henson's upside as a position coach.

akaitori: Bryan Anderson has all but disappeared from the radar of the Redbird press. Has his status been downgraded to irrelevant? I thought he was progressing at least to a back-up role.

Thanks for the posts every week. I enjoy the column.
Jeff Gordon: He is not going to come to St. Louis and sit around all season behind Molina. That is La Rue's job for another year. If Molina suffered a major injury, then he could move into play. Longer term, if he can play some other positions and become a utility guy, he and Molina could co-exist. Otherwise, he could become trade fodder.

DisCard: I since I don’t recall a case of an owner selling a team because the fans didn’t like his style, I won’t waste time on where the buck stops on this second base mess.

I thought the Baltimore’s signing of Wigginton was interesting. It made me think they were now willing to move Roberts. Surely they didn’t sign him to sit him and I don’t see them moving their affordable players from 3rd or left field (who they just gave up 2 pitchers to get). They need battery help.

They have this catcher Weiters coming fast in the minors, but Anderson looks closer to me. Clearly the Orioles are desperate for pitching. I’m not big on these fantasy trades, they are usually a waste of time, but I think the Cards have one or two moves in their bag. This would seem to be the best shot to me. There actually are some questions here. What do you think it would take? Would they include Wellemeyer or McClellan in such a package, maybe adding Thompson and a prospect? I know this would require an outfield or pitching move, but I haven’t given up on Ankiel to the Yankees. They can’t be happy with that outfield and he wouldn’t jar their payroll for this year; as if they cared.

BTW,wouldn't it be fun to have some real news to discuss?
Jeff Gordon: I can't see the Cardinals trading good, inexpensive pitching for a really expensive second baseman. I love Roberts and what he could do for this offense, but the Cards have already passed on more logical moves to keep their spending in line.

Tim: Do you think the Rams will have strong interest in Leftwich?
Jeff Gordon: There arean't aren't many decent back-up QBs floating around, so perhaps. But if the Rams are going to borrow heavily from the West Coast scheme, Byron may not fit that. Not sure he is accurate enough to do what the Rams want.

rockintheburbs: Jeff
Who do you think will be the next Rams player to get cut?
Jeff Gordon: I'd say Drew Bennett, but cutting him would create a $5 million cap hit. Keeping him costs just $100,000 against the cap. Cutting Torry Holt, by contrast, would create $8 million in cap space -- enough to take care of Crabtree and then some.

Tim: Is it possible the Rams could package up Pace and Holt for a firs rounder?
Jeff Gordon: They make $19.2 million, against the cap, between them. That's where it gets tricky.

Larry: Hi Jeff,

I'm optimistic about the Cards chances this year. They have plenty of offense; the starting rotation will fall nicely in place if Carpenter is healthy; and the bullpen will be stronger. But we still have a glut of outfielders and one or two of them will have to go. As spring training goes further do you see a trade involving one of the outfileders?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, unless Schumaker and Mather both move to the infield. Then the Cards could keep them all for a while longer.

Griff21: Tlr said Schu could be an "average 2nd baseman, at least." wasn't AK basically an average 2b also? what a commitment to win, when average is the best we can do. I'm sure Pujols loves to hear this stuff too.
Jeff Gordon: Skip could be a "plus" second baseman offensively if he can lead off against right-handed pitchers. As an outfielder lacking power or base-stealing ability, he doesn't help the lineup as much out there.

Griff21: All the talk is about 2b, how is 3b looking? I know its early but how have Mather and Freese looked over there?
Jeff Gordon: Freese is an above average fielder. Let's see what he does in exhibition play, especially late, against big league pitching. Mather proved he can do some damage against big league pitching and he seems to be an OK fielder.

His challenge will be to hold up day after day after day. As TLR, he will split his defensive time between the infield and outfield so he doesn't break down.

rockintheburbs: Jeff
Who will be the first free agent signed by the rams not named Bartell or Atogwe?
Jeff Gordon: Haven't heard a good rumor regarding that. But I don't see this team making a huge free-agent splash, given the limitations.

Griff21: The blues are my team and i would love nothing more than than to see then win a cup or 3 or 4... we are a young team & lots of injuries( I think i saw a stat we have lost the 2nd most man games in the NHL.)Realistically do we have a shot at the playoffs ? or should we look to get a couple more picks again at the deadline?
Jeff Gordon: There isn't much margin for error. The Blues have given away some points recently to slow their charge. I seem them lasting in the hunt until the end, though. If the Note can get something good for Tkachuk, it might have to go there. Same with Hinote, since this team is building a surplus up front.

Griff21: I love Schu and wish him the best. I found it interesting TLR basically told him to buy a house in STL this year. I can't envision Schu as more than a spot starter/platoon @ 2b, and with Dunc, Raz, & other OF slated to be on the roster where does schu and the rest get their at bats?
Jeff Gordon: Skip does a lot of small things well and he has a great attitude. He also costs the Cards next to nothing and wouldn't fetch much in a trade, so it makes sense to bank on hims as one of the 25 this season. He could be anything from a 225 AB guy to a semi-regular, starting at 2B against right-handed pitchers or double-switching into games as Chris Duncan's defensive replacement in the OF.

If Rasmus has a great spring, then Skip's ability (or inability) to play second will become critical.

Griff21: How are EJ and DJ doing? I remember awhile back both saying they wanted to come back this year, obviously JD was more conservative in their return dates. EJ is a long shot, but King sounded like he was a reasonably good bet to return this year.
Jeff Gordon: Neither guy will play. King would love to come back, but the nature of his work puts him at great reinjury risk. Erik is early in his recovery. He suffered a massive injury and the Blues have to make sure he is REALLY strong when he comes back. If he loses a step as a skater, he may not be a cornerstone player any more.

Griff21: Just tossing it out there, I enjoyed the article on the "bearded birds." Cant recall another season when as many birds had facial hair. Too bad Raz is too young to grow facial hair or he might be guaranteed a spot next to Dunc and Ank.

& a Salute to probably one of the more colorful and creative cards ...Dustin Hermanson (sp?)
Jeff Gordon: Good one on Colby. The peach fuzz could cost him.

Weary of these third- and fourth-place projections, the Cards are trying to get their game face on early.

Rich: Good morning Gordo,

With free agency on the horizon, I expect the Rams to purging the roster of high priced veterans any day now. Chavous was just the first of many to come.

Who do you see being on the chopping block?

Personally, I think the next big name will be Pisa. He may have been the teams leading tackler; however, his undisciplined play cost the Rams dearly on more than one occasion.

Thanks for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, if the Rams moves Will outside -- which won't be easy, given the dearth of MLBs likely to hit free agency -- then Pisa doesn't have a job.

marvin slay: Mr. Gordon,

Would you happen to know how the progress is of that New York football player who had that horrific neck injury a year or two ago. They had done some state of the art treatment like injecting ice water into his spine or something like that. Sorry I don't remember the name.

Marvin Slay
San Diego
Jeff Gordon: That would be Bills lineman Kevin Everett, who is walking again after radical treatment allowed him to make an unlikely recovery.

COGzilla: 1)I know his play is frustrating at times, but is there any shot barron gets a shot at the left tackle spot this year or is he done in stlouis? I think it is his natural spot and i hate to see the team use the 2 pick in the whole draft for a future left tackle when ours might already be there.
I know you and JT have said billyd is down on his competiveness, but maybe the new staff can get him fired up. Not too many 6'7'' 320 pound first round tackles floating around...
2)who would you say is the next ram to go??
thanks
Jeff Gordon: Alex Barron could play left tackle if Pace gets clipped, but then he's in his last contract year. The Rams would have to draft a tackle and try to find free agent help as well.

Tim: I think Phil Loadholt is extemley underrated. Fromw what is see he is huge and a mauler. What the deal? Id like to see him picked at 35
Jeff Gordon: Some early projections had him sliding up into the late first round. The Rams might have to move into a late first-round pick to get a guy of this caliber.

ueaces: Hi Gordo,
Thanks for the great job you do on the chats.

Hard for me to imagine that the "real" second baseman for the Cardinals is presently of this roster...I just don't see it. Also hard for to beleive that Mo will not, at the very least, inqurie about Hudson. How much he will want is another question, but obviously his value has dropped significantly. Love to get him on a one year.
Jeff Gordon: One year at reasonable money would change everything, of course. But atter eating a $4 million deal at the request of his manager -- money that counts agianst his budget -- I don't see him rushing to spend money unless all other options fail.

Gmartin: The Blues are a still a relatively long shot for making the playoffs. Can we get a 1st round pick for Walt? If yes, I say make the deal. Does Mckee have any value or would it be simply a salary dump?
Jeff Gordon: If Jay had trade value, he would have been gone a long time ago.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if the Blues could get a No. 1 for Tkachuk. But with Andy back and Backes coming on, the Blues would be able to make this move without collapsing.

Gmartin: I believe the Cardinals will make a move or two sometime between now and opening day. My guess sign one of the remaining LHRP to a one or two year deal. Second trade an OF or two for an infielder who can play 2nd.

Do you see the Cardinals taking a shot on Izzy with an incentive ladden deal?
Jeff Gordon: Izzy is a maybe. I don't see a LH SP out there that is very exciting, so dealing for such a commodity at some point is more likely. And I don't see a deal for a 2B unless everybody fails. Which, or course, could happen.

Gmartin: Missouri basketball has made a great rebound from the Q. Snyder years. Hats of to Coach Anderson that is a great job in tough circumstances. Team may be able to make a run in the NCAA tourny. Seems like they match up well against most teams except perhaps a real power type team (Big East types Syracuse/CT/Georgetown). Will Missouri's guard play be solid enough for a run?
Jeff Gordon: Well, that's a concern. I did like the way Denmon played against the pesky Cornhusker guards. But Mike IS a point guard short this year.

Gmartin: The Rams are in position the Blues were two years ago. Trade anyone we can for more draft picks/young talent. Do you see Holt and or pace being dealt? My guess could get a lot for Pace (injuries may make me wrong. Holt seems on his last legs to me.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but the team did have an early season offer on the board for Torry. And his play did improve late in the year.

Pace, yes, could have value. Potential Hall of Fame tackles appeal to contenders.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

It looks like you are going to get the LHP you covet...after 2011. Buehrle is saying he misses home too much and is considering walking away after this contract. Correct me if I'm wrong, but St. Charles isn't too far from Busch Stadium. Correct me if I'm wrong, but St. Louisans would love to see a home town player in uniform. And correct me if I'm wrong, but the Cardinal brass LOVES to pick up 32 year old pitchers who's best days are behind them but still have something to offer. And correct me if I'm wrong, but that might just be ONE way we can show Albert we want to win.

And I'm sure Kenny Williams wouldn't mind exploring some trade possibilities with St. Louis as we get closer to 2011.
Jeff Gordon: IF Dave Duncan is still here, that would be an interesting move. Mark may not be able to pitch up to his money with the White Sox, but the NL offer safe haven.

Petey123: Jeff, any news on the sale of the Rams and do you think the Rams will still be playing in St. Louis after the 2014 season?
Jeff Gordon: The offseason improvements on the Edward Jones Dome are a start. Now St. Louis needs a potential owner from this region to step forward.

John Erbe: Hey Jeff,

How was the relatonship between Plaxico Burress and Coach Spags?
Can Spags make a trade for Plax if we can't keep Holt.
Also, are they any rumors about the Rams signing any free agents from the Giants?
Jeff Gordon: Jabobs would have been great, but then he got franchised. And he is looking to be the man. A guy like safety James Butler would be a great fit. RB Derrick Ward will seek a starting job, but if the money is right here . . .

As for Burress, he kept getting fined last year and he hardly fits into Spags' team-first mantra. If the Rams dealt for a guy like this, other Rams would assume they can do whatever.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

As far as Spring Training goes, when can we start feeling optimistic about Carp's results? I know your regular season answer...when he's made 25 starts. But I'm talking ST...when will we have reason to believe that the Carpenter misery of 2007-08 MIGHT go away?
Jeff Gordon: I would remain skeptical until he is pitching pain-free halfway into the season. Nothing the doctors or trainers could say that this point has much credibility to me. Projecting recovers from pitching injuries is dicey, as we all saw last year.

Brett: Pujols' recent comments were good to hear. But I think he's wondering the same thing fans are: Is the front office dedicated to winning? Will Albert's comments "call-out" ownership and force them to make some moves and keep Albert happy? He's already been denied Manny.
Jeff Gordon: And this owner has already won two pennants and World Championship, making this owner heads and shoulders over the post-Gussie arrangement. DeWitt wants to win.

And I believe the idea of trying to develop 10 strong players than buy one really high-end free agent makes sense in the long haul.

If the top Cards prospects pan out, Albert will be happy.

BrotherBri: Gordo,

Thanks for all you do. As always, those of us in the far provinces are grateful for the insights we can't get anywhere else.

Saw the Blues game here in Nashville Thursday, and I have to say that I'm disgusted for many reasons: (1) There was more offense in the first minute of OT than in the final 12 minutes of regulation. Why on earth didn't the Blues finish? (2) Jay McKee. I don't know if it's a Nashville thing, but every time I see him on the ice here, I find myself wanting to shoot Larry Pleau. He's far too big and too experienced to get as badly outplayed for pucks, and the decisions he makes just don't fit his years, let alone his salary. (3) Weaver? We can't do better than that? Murray sat down Wagner for that? (4) And last on defensemen, I saw WAY too much of McKee, Weaver and Woywitka, and nowhere near enough of Strachan, Wagner and Colaiacovo. Murray may not agree, but I can't see how McKee, Weaver and Woywitka give us much of a chance to win each night ... they just don't add anything significant. Perhaps, with instruction and experience, Strachan, Wagner and Colaiacovo will.

Of course, I saw good things, too. Tkachuk was calm and smart on the ice, if not physical enough at times. McDonald's acceleration is almost all the way back. And though T.J. looked almost as tired as Berglund, it didn't keep him from trying to jump into plays. T.J.'s a keeper.

And now, a question ... or more accurately, a plea. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tell me the Blues can do with McKee what the Ducks did with McDonald -- free up salary for next year by trading the year-plus contract for a higher partial year contract. Take on the bigger '08-'09 salary, but dump the '09-'10 salary. Losing the salaries of Hinote, Legacy and McKee, and perhaps Tkachuk, might well allow us a shot at a truly skilled winger. And THAT, plus a healthy Kariya, might make next year a year to remember.
Jeff Gordon: Moving McKee will be tough. Management has been willing to do that for some time, but getting another team to bite on his salary is tough. That McKee got benched after your game doesn't help his value much.

I'm glad to see Wagner back in the land of the living. Loved him last year. But he does need to clean up this turnovers or risk falling out of the picture next season when Polak, Johnson, Brewer, Pietrangelo come back.

therealdealankiel: What is your gut telling you on Izzy? Would he accept a lesser role if he can't win back the 9th, or would he be a malcontent (Rolen/Kennedy) that would ruin the mojo in the clubhouse? As I read that Perez is still WORKING on different arm action and breaking pitches, I worry about the prospects of running him out there 3 times a week in the 9th...
Jeff Gordon: If there was any sense that he would dislike a lesser role, if it came to that, then Izzy won't come back.

You are wise to fret about Perez, who is still a work in progress. Motte is as well. That is why I pump up Kinney, who still must regain some durability.

If Jason still wants to pitch, he needs to get to camp and pitch. At the very list he can show other teams that he still has something. He can't do that at home.

ben battocletti: How do you think the rest of the missouri bball season will go with all their momentum?
Jeff Gordon: If they can outman Colorado on the road and keep their home streak alive against K-State, then they will really be primed to visit KU and host Oklahoma. There, the momentum may die. Then the Tigers would have to avoid a pretourney letdown at Texas A&M or in their first Big 12 tourney game.

Rocco Steo: Gordo what are the chances of reviving the SLU vs Mizzou
Rivalry?
Jeff Gordon: It's about the money. If the schools could generate a big enough guarantee up for the Dome or Scottrade, I think Mike would be more inclined to do this than Norm was. And Majerus likely would love such a high-profile opportunity.

But is the money there?

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Albert came out with some pretty strong comments about PED's yesterday. How much stock do you put in what he said? I'd love to believe him, and for the most part I do. Comments like yesterdays make me think he must be telling the truth, otherwise he is digging his grave even deeper if something ever were to come out. What are your thoughts on this?
Jeff Gordon: Albert got dragged into this stuff before, after a false internet report. He was adament then and he is now. That is good news. A lot of other ballplayers (i.e. Pudge Rodriguez) are hemming and hawing.

Colin: Is Tkachuk going to waive his no-trade clause and accept a trade to a Stanley Cup Contender?
Jeff Gordon: The Bruins are struggling on offense now. He's a big-time Boston guy, so it would be shocking to see him pass up a shot at that -- if the Bruins came calling.

Mike: It appears Pujols has put ownership on notice. If they continue with the status quo and don't start bringing in proven players, especially pitchers, he will depart STL for the Yanks or Sox. I believe Albert is sincere and won't try to break the bank if ownership does what is necessary to put a winner on the field every year. Gordo: whats your take on Alberts comments?
Jeff Gordon: I'm glad he make those remarks. The guy plays to win, period. And he doesn't want to be insulted financially. If the Cards do their player development right, the franchise should be able to win AND pay Albert and the other key home-grown players their money.

Brian: What are the chances of Perez or Motte not just getting the closer job, but even of being on the ML roster when the season opens?
Jeff Gordon: If they don't make the roster, then this team has huge problems. At least one of them has to contribute unless the Cards bring in some additional late-inning guys.

Brian: what's your take on the rumors that the Cards have been in contact with Izzy's agents? Just talk, or is there a possibility of seeing Izzy this spring?
Jeff Gordon: Tony and Dave have great fondness for the guy. If he still wants to pitch -- and is willing to earn whatever role he can -- then it would be a great fit. Who knows, maybe he could come back strong and relocate his stuff and command. On an incentives-laden deal, why not look?

Brian: we've been hearing about trading away an outfielder, is that actually going to happen?
Jeff Gordon: Eventually, yes, because even if Mather and Schumaker move to the infield, this team will have a surplus as Jay and Jones improve. And I would hate the Cards to take the mindset that Ankiel is destined to move as a free agent after this season. If stays healthy, he is a 30 HR/100 RBI guy.

Jeepster: Jeff: If the Cardinals fail to contend again this season do you envision an entire shake up in the front office? Personally, I believe the team needs to find a competent General Manager after this season who will concentrate on rebuilding a nucleus around Pujols before they can hope to renegotiate an extension for him. Not sure if this is their current direction due to their lack of activity this offseason but it sounds like Pujols has now put them on notice that he wants to play for a contender and Mozeliak has not done his job this offseason.
Jeff Gordon: I believe DeWitt is into the whole player development thing for the long haul. If Rasmus, McClellan, Perez, Wallace, Motte, et al pan out, the Cardinals will be positioned to contend consistently. And if they pan out, Mozeliak will be gold with management.

There are three years to go. We'll know long before then if the new approach is working.

Ross: With Joel Pinero looking to be the 5th starter, are the Cards testing the waters on any remaining free agents? Or is it totally dependent upon the health of Carpenter?
Jeff Gordon: I'm sure Mozeliak is keeping his eyes open, just as he did last year when he insisted he wasn't looking for pitching . . . right until he signed Lohse.

Ross: Has there been any discussion of bringing in Ray Durham? Or would that be an end of spring training move?
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak said no - and Tony apparently isn't pushing for him.

rockintheburbs: Jeff
I dont know if you give predictions or not but.... what is your prediction for the blues-rangers game this evening?
Jeff Gordon: After watching the Rangers play yesterday, the Blues ought to win this game 3-1 or so. With tough games looming, they need to bank this one.

Cards4520: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions...got a couple
1.) Cards record: above or below 80 wins
2.) Do you think Mizzou will decide to start richardson at D tackle rather than Tight End? Honestly, could he play both? (I doubt it at the college level)
Jeff Gordon: Cards: More than 80 wins.
Mizzou: Richardson at DT.

Ross: Is there a front runner from the young arms to break into the rotation?
Jeff Gordon: Well, it's not Mitchell Boggs -- starting the spring with a stiff shoulder is SO Cardinals. That is a setback. Perhaps Fernando Salas, a non-roster guy, could breakthrough in the pen and free up McClellan to start.

mike: HI GORDO, How is Rob Ramage doing these days? He was always one of my favorite players. If he would have spent the majority of his time with one team his number would be retired. I don't condone what he did, but in the past it could have easily have happened to me. A terrible tragedy for two families.
Thanks
Mike
Jeff Gordon: Haven't heard much about Rob. What a tragedy, as you said.

RCJ: I would like to know what the market is for three players. How much money do you think it would take to sign Hudson? I know what he just won in arbitration, so do we have pieces to trade for Dan Uggla? Where does the salary for Brian Roberts stand and do we have pieces for a deal there?

I had argued with friends for awhile that the Cardinals would maintain the regular salary level this offseason, and with extra room being afforded by disappearing contracts we'd make a few decent moves. Turns out ownership has made me look like an @$$. I want to know what sort of numbers we're talking about to slot on of those three into our lineup. Just how cheap is ownership? Without adding one of these guys where will our salary be to start the season?
Jeff Gordon: I, too, expected the Cards to keep their salary level. And that was their original plan. Had Fuentes taken the money, that's where the Cards would be.

The economy has worsened, which is legit. However . . . anticipating much lower attendance could become a self-fulfilling prophesy. in this depressed market, the Cards could have really cleaned by spending to the limit. Who knows, that could still happen as other teams try to move salary.

RCJ: On another note, do you get the sense that management is willing to make some moves, are they in wait and see mode? If Carp can't go during Spring, if no one excites at second - will they make a move? If so, how long are we going to have to wait before they make a choice?
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak expects Skip to make it at second, so he will ride it out unless the guy is a stumblebum at second. The Braves had success doing this with Kelly Johnson, a player many fans want.

That said, the Cards will never stop looking, in a sense. They do have the resources, in money and trade chips, to make adjustments.

superjim: Hi Gordo,

I have what I believe is a better way of getting more cap space than by cutting some of our best players. The first thing I would try to do is restructure Holt and/or Pace's contracts. Little's had this done already, it isn't fair to him to do it again, with him I think the only options are to cut him or to keep him. Say one of those two deals gets restructured, it saves roughly $3 million for example. I would try to trade Tinoisamoa for a 3rd rounder, settle for a 4th, and I'd cut McMichael whose contract must be massive for this season (in regard to performance in particular). I would also cut (or not re-sign) Incognito, Leckey, Pittman, Wade, Wroten, Fakhir Brown, and Trent Green. By my maths, that gives us around $25 million, and we either get out underperformers or guys being overpaid. Any thoughts?

Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: It takes two to restructure. If Holt is unhappy here, will he play along. And given the scarcity of good tackles out there, would Pace want to? Interesting that they are comparing notes now on the business side.

I'd move Pisa, as well, but I don't know what he would fetch.

superjim: Hi Gordo,

It occurs to me that to get the most out of Torry Holt, we'd be better moving him to being the slot receiver next season. He still has arguably the best hands in the NFL, and a terrific understanding of the game. By not having him on the field all the time, and largely running short or intermediate routes, he'd be fresher deeper into both games and the season in general. In this scenario we'd have Bennett as our number one receiver, Donnie Avery as number 2, Holt 3, Burton 4. Do you think this is a possible scenario?

Thanks Gordo, from a cold and wet London!
Jeff Gordon: Bennett No. 1? Yikes! And I don't know if the Rams can justify paying Holt all-pro dollars to be a slot guy.

Wyoramsfan: Gordo,
PFT is reporting that the Jags are going to release Fred Taylor today. Do you think he'd fit in as a backup to Steven Jackson?

Thanks, as always, for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: Nah, I'd go for another power guy. Fred's had a hell of a career, though.

Bob: Jeff,

Now that Skip been working with The Secret Weapon, how's he looking? Do you think he has a legit shot at being our every day second baseman? What do you (realistically) think of our chances this year with a healthy Carp?

Thanks,

Bob
Jeff Gordon: Skip is early in the process. Joe and Derrick will have regular updates elsewhere on this site. I'm looking forward to getting down there is a few weeks for a first-hand look.

BleednRed: Gordo...

This offseason, Mo keeps saying that he wants to wait until Spring Training to gauge the team and if need be, he will just go out and get somebody. From the dismal attempts to sign FA's and make trades so far during his tenure, who does Mo think he can just go out and get if he wants? Even if he decides to finally improve the team through a trade or signing, why is so confident that he can get the deal done? Who possibly could he think he has lined up in his back pocket? I am afraid that at the end of the day, he may fail and then tell us "well I tried."
Jeff Gordon: Well, he got Lohse last season and that worked out. And this spring, more teams than usual are looking to off-load salaries.

Matt: Gordo,

Have you heard anything from outside the Cardinals' organization about how Adam Kennedy's release looks? I would think that some organizations view this as letting him go because there weren't any takers, but I'm sure that there are others who feel the same as us fans do, that the organization looks clueless based on the timing of this whole thing.

Is there any chance the we sign a veteran if none of the current 2B candidates step up in spring training?
Jeff Gordon: The timing was awkward. Maybe some GMs assumed the Mo waited as long as he could, hoping to get something done at that spot -- but this appeared to be the manager winning a tug of war.

sjd: Gordo--Alot of the fan base is ready to trade Ankiel for much needed pitching. I don't see a big glut of extra players in the outfield .Ludwick/Ankiel/Duncan all have a long history of injuries. So the likelihood of one going down to injury is good. Then there's Schumacher and Mather who will likely be part of the infield and outfield. Finally , the 6th outfielder Rasmus is unproven at the major league level with 0 at bats.Barton is expendable but not good trade bait and doesn't have enough experience or power. So I say don't trade Ankiel it will leave us vuleranable in the OF. What do you say Gordo?
Jeff Gordon: If Skip is going to the infield -- and possibly Mather, too, -- suddenly the outfield isn't as deep.

Right now, it appears the Cards will need Ankiel's power more than it could use a middle-of-the-rotation starter or another reliever. I didn't see it that way a few months ago.

broglio4brock: I remember back when players used to be awarded beer distributorships in this town back when Busch ran the club. Is it customary or even legal nowadays for an MLB team like the Cardinals to award stock equity or even partnership to a special player like Albert Pujols to say thanks and seek their help in advising/running the franchise?
Jeff Gordon: I believe the Cards could sign him to a contract that includes a marketing deal and a post-career role. It will take something like $100 million over four more years or $130 million over five to get it done.

Alexa: Do you think my favorite player Josh Kinney could be put into the starting pitching role as a sixth man? and also where do you see Joe Mather playing outfield or third base and why not give Brendan Ryan a shot at starting at 2nd base?
Jeff Gordon: Now that La Russa ran off Kennedy, he may have to put up with Ryan's manic behavior. If Schumaker becomes the primary 2B, then Brendan could take the starts against lefties and sub for him.

Kinney lacks the stamina coming off surgery to start. But he could be very valuable in late innings.

art #44: Can we please look at getting some big inside d line help to improve our run & overall defense. ( we are way to small upfront )
Jeff Gordon: Easier said than done, price-wise. But it will be one of the points of emphasis.

Brian W.: Hey Jeff,

Thanks again for holding another one of your insightful chat sessions. I have a Cardinals question, and I'll try to keep it short. The question surrounding the Cardinals OF has been brought up time and time again, and will continue to be on the front burner until the mid-season trade deadline. If Rasmus and Duncan both show they are healthy and ready to rake, what direction do you head with your OF situation? Ankiel and Ludwick seemed poised once again to have solid offensive and defensive years. I realize Schoo is probably the most likely man to go if he doesn't stick at 2B, but what about everyone else? One more seemingly HAS to go... If you were MO, would it be Ankiel, Ludwick, or Duncan? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick has the most trade value, given his distance from free agency. But the Cards need his RH bat.

Ankiel has some trade value, but he hits the market in a year.

Duncan is coming back from surgery. Hence a lack of value . . . for now.

The Cards could hang onto Chris for year, then move him and Mather into a platoon replacing Ankiel.

beast39: Hey Jeff,
People have been saying that the Rams will get FA SS James Butler from the New York Giants. This seems realistic because Spags was Butler's former coach, and really helped improve Butlers defensive play. Have you heard anything to lead you to believe that this could happen?
Jeff Gordon: A good fit, as I mentioned earlier.

Josh Otto: The negotiations between the Rams and Bartell along with Atogwe were supposed to heat up last week. Any update to the current situation with them?
Jeff Gordon: Stay tuned . . .

Art #44: I really hope our new leadership can give us the swagger needed to become champions again & reach our potional.
Jeff Gordon: It'll take a couple of years.

Tom B: I was sorry to see Julius Peppers wants to play in a 3-4. Considering what Spags did with the DE position at NY, I thought the Rams could move down to Seattle or Oaklands spot in the draft (they both covet Crabtree) and gain some picks. I think their #1 and Little to the Panthers might then get Peppers and team him with Long on the outside. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: This team has to rebuild with draft picks and younger free agents, like Bell -- but better than Bell.

Nathan in MN: Hi Gordo, I'm concerned that the Cardinals didn't pull the trigger on a deal for Ankiel when the Yankees were reportedly interested in him. We could've got another starter for depth in case Carpenter suffers a mishap during spring training. Do you think it was smart to keep Ankiel or do you feel we should've traded him when we had the chance?
Jeff Gordon: Earlier, I might have agreed. Now I believe the Cards need all the offense they can't get.

Longball24: Albert Pujols indicated that he won't be ready to commit to the Cardinals beyond 2011 until he sees what direction they're going in for the future.

"I want to win, like our fans want to win, just like our manager wants to win, our coaching staff, everybody in this clubhouse, the front office," Pujols said. "If they change their strategy then I'm going to have to change mine, too."

What is going on with the Cardinal front office? We have the best player in the league, MVP, and he is in his prime but the front office is not spending any $$ to go after much needed support. Closer, 1 starter and a second basemen for starters. Is the Cardinal organization in the much of a financial hurt?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards are trying to develop that sort of talent so the club can afford to pay cornerstone players to stay. If that happens, the Cards will be better off than other teams that spend on the fly, as the Mariners have done in recent years.

beast39: Hey Gordo,
I think the release of Chavous was a good start, hopefully others will follow him out the door. I heard that Chavous really helped with the progression of Atogwe & Bartell. If thats true, than that is great to hear. Just wondering, if Chavous doesn't land a spot on another teams roster, any chance the Rams bring him back in some sort of coaching role?
Jeff Gordon: This coaching staff doesn't have that sort of relationship with him. And he is young to cross over.

Will: I, like many other fans, have been upset with the teams lack of offseason movement, but I think that I may have been wrong. There are too many questions on this team for one player to fix it. It is impossible to predict what this team will do with so much young talent. My question is what if all of the possibilities turn out to be positive? What if Perez turns it to the lock down closer that he very possibly could be? What if Rasmus is as good as the scouts say, and what if all of the other young players from last year progress this year? Will the club make a big midseason move, or can we expect more of the same old lines from team ownership?
Jeff Gordon: I would the front office to stay on the prowl all year, as it did last year. Lopez was a great pickup, for instance. As for big moves . . . well, let's see how it all shakes down.

BillP: Hey Jeff, why are the Penguins struggling so much this year?
Jeff Gordon: Boy, the Pens wish they knew. This team subtracted a lot of grit from last year's team. Also, they had to play young defensemen this season. And Gonchar's return helps the offense, but not that defensive end.

BillP: Hey Jeff, do agree with locking up Andy McDonald for 4 years? Thanks and Have a good week !
Jeff Gordon: That was a good move, since this team could use the speed and skill during the next few years while transitioning in more skilled guys like Perron and Oshie.

JOHN HAMPTON: what is mizzou ranking
Jeff Gordon: 10th in the coach's poll.

Reading Ram: Ok, so we have a new coaching staff, that is a great start, released Cory another good move. Coaches typically bring not only coaches they know but also players. I am looking at Perhaps James Butler, Derrick Ward etc.. What players do you think that Spags has a connection to that may convert itself into some help for us?

Also I believe that if we can fill the OT spots in FA and trade Holt that we should draft Crabtree. Between Crabtree, Curry and Monroe(or other OT) what is your belief for the biggest need for the rams in the draft this year? Also I am praying for Unger in the 2nd round!!
Jeff Gordon: The Rams may be able to trade into a second first-round pick, which could go for a tackle IF the first pick went for Crabtree.

Butler is a guy we've mentioned here. Ward too.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

Happy Monday. The Rams have made their first cut of the off season. Any idea when they will announce more cap casualties and will they be announcing them before February 27th?
Jeff Gordon: Next week could be busier on that front.

beast39: Gordo,
Have you heard if there has been any progression in resigning Atogwe & Bartell?
Jeff Gordon: They are working on it . . .

Entreri10: Hey Jeff,

Who would you rather have on the team next year, Pace or Holt?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Pace.

Jason Winders: So, how do you think the Cards will opt to pitch to Pujols in a couple of years? Try to jam him inside or just walk him to get to the next man in the order.

Seriously, how would you feel? You defer significant money WITHOUT INTEREST from your salary to allow the club greater flexibility to make in-season acquisitions. But no deals are ever done inside or outside the season. And I'm guessing we're not talking signing Kyle Lohse here.

No impact bat to protect you. (No, getting Chris Duncan back from injury isn't "just like" making an significant signing.)

No LOOGY to hold the lead you gave them.

No second baseman.
Jeff Gordon: Geez, Albert didn't catch Ludwick's RBI total until the end of the season. Last year's offense was better than the year before -- and that could happen again this year with added power at SS and the OF.

Ryan Miller: Do you know if any other current Rams are on the chopping block right now? Also, do you think that there could be some guys cut that would be a shock to us?
Jeff Gordon: We've talked about all of them -- no shocks. Bulger and Bennett are hard to let go because of their contracts. Little, Pace, Holt, Pisa -- some pretty big players are in place.

Randy: Why aren't the Rams looking to trade down. There does not seem to be a concensus choice as to who is the best left tackle in the draft like last year with Miami's number 1. Crabtree will be enticing to several teams in that 10 to 16 slot which could land us an additional mid to late number two pick?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see Crabtree falling that far. Trading down that far would be problem.

Joe Baccamazzi: Hey Jeff,
What teams, if any, are looking at potentially making an offer for either Torry Holt or Orlando Pace? Also, what do you expect each is worth to another team?
Jeff Gordon: If Tennessee was really going to spend a No. 1 on Holt, then Pace would get the same, right?

On the other hand, I'm shocked the Titans made that offer.

gianni: Gordo---I assume you talk to MO. Can you ask him why he doesn't sign Rick Ankiel (the greatest cardinal story since Grover Cleveland Alexander)to a 3 or 4 year contract LIKE NOW DUDE! After Ankiel has a big 2009 season Boras will leverage Mo's behind into paying double what he can sign him for now---Gordo use your influence and get him to throw out this years salary to entice a deal now! Also I like Mo and the Lohse deal but the Diamondbacks wanted Kennedy 3 months ago---why didn't Mo pull the trigger back then? And lastly wasn't Mike Liut the best Blues goalie ever?
Jeff Gordon: I'd agree on Liut. And I agree on Ankiel. But I have no pull -- my pleas to keep Aaron Miles and overspend on Ankiel fell on deaf ears.

jm: do you think we are waiting to see what will be available in freeagency before we make any drastic salary cuts? for example , the situation in carolina w peppers and gross . also can we afford to make a serious push for peppers or gross if 1 or both become available ?
Jeff Gordon: Is there enough money for that? Not now. I'd be surprised of the Rams can aim that high.

jm: is their any realistic scenario where we would trade , not release , but trade bulger ?
Jeff Gordon: What team would take that contract?

Kim Miller: Hi Jeff, thanks for your time. After Albert's comments yesterday, what is your feeling that management is trying to do. To me the Cubs haven't really improved with their moves, but we have not really closed the gap with them. We read that management has no more money for Free Agents, is that true. Albert should and needs to be a Cardinal for life. He is the face of the franchise and city. I know he is 3 years away from possibly leaving, club option 2011, but news like that sends shockwaves through Cardinal Nation. The Central Division is weak, and with a couple of the right moves, this team can be right there at the end.

Thanks Kim Miller
Jeff Gordon: I do agree that the Cards could really help themselves with a few more additions, filling needs that become apparent later on.There is damage to be done in this division.

saintlooney: Hey Gordo- thanks again for the forum. What's your take on Legace? Even if he plays great in Peoria, do you really see him back in a Blues uniform this year, or is it all about someone claiming him on re-entry? I think he left the bridge in flames behind him.
Jeff Gordon: If Mason got hurt and there were no other meaningful options, then maybe he could return. But that is not the team's preference.

Josh: What are the chances Flajole convinces the rams to make a run for Julius Peppers?
Jeff Gordon: He can try, but there are so many team needs and only so many resources.

CardsRedOctober09: Overlord of the waves,
Do you think DeWitt has told management that not another cent will be spent this offseason? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: I can't believe Mo would be handcuffed if an emergency developed. If they let the team tank, that will really cost the franchise money this summer. In this economy, fans won't support mediocrity.

Zuke: How realistic are the following statements:

Shumaker is the starting second baseman opening day.
Carpenter holds up all year.
Kinney becoms closer.
Jeff Gordon: They could all happen. Kinney I love, but insiders warn that his elbow is ready for day after day work.

CardsRedOctober09: Gordo of the waves,
There is a rumor out there that the MLB may help with sign-and-trade deals for Type A free agents. If anything official happens in the next few days, do you see the Cardinals reconsidering signing Hudson if his deal would be cheap enough? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: No . . . again, a lot of money for a second baseman. Skip can approximate his offense if he can handle the D.

george: Gordo,

I have heard any news about NHL prospect and native St. Louisian Patrick Maroon who is in the Philly Flyers minor league system right now? Can he make it to the NHL?
Jeff Gordon: At 6-4 and 225 pounds -- with skills, too -- he seems to be a mortal lock to make it.

Mike: Remember the Saint Louis Stallions idea of a Open-Air Stadium in Earth City, Man I wish the Rams would revisit that idea.
Jeff Gordon: Ah, the Stallions. At one time, that seemed like a slam dunk.

Josh: I see that Jason Smith is edging the other OT prospects lately. Do you know where the rams stand in terms of tackle rankings at this point? Also, if nobody separates themselves on the o-line, is there any chance the rams reach for Aaron Curry or Crabtree?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, if the Rams believe there could be more-then-expected depth at tackle, the Rams could go WR or LB. Maybe they trade for a second first-round pick is possible and maybe a trade down is possible, for the reason you mentioned.

jm: concerning holt and pace . when do decisions need to be made by ? can we wait till the draft ? possibly make a draft day move ?
Jeff Gordon: Holt has a roster bonus coming up, so that may make the team move on him sooner than with Pace. If somebody goes, it ought to happen before the draft.

Fred Wied NJ Ramfan: Jeff,
Thanks for taking my question. We have many holes to fill so what 2 positions would be best to fill in free agency, that would help us make the most of the draft?
Jeff Gordon: Free agency: I'd look at safety, for sure. The MLB crop looks thin . . . maybe DE, if there is an up and comer.

The Pastor: Hi Gordo!

Bottom line - What's going on with the Cardinals front office--at a minimum, it would seem that the front office and LaRussa are not on the same page. LaRussa's priorities: Add an impact bat--nope. Add a top of the line closer--nope. Add another quality starter--nope. Beyond the Lohse and (Greene??) signings, have there been "impact" signings, or have I missed it? It would seem like we're lagging behind in putting ourselves in a position to win a division or wild card berth into the playoffs. (And just now I read the article on Pujols saying "I'll stay if the organization is committed to winning") Hmmm. What say you?
Jeff Gordon: Tony and Mo/DeWitt had some differences, for sure. If the kids development, that will be mostly forgotten. If not . . . well, then Mo will have to get busy or face a watershed moment with this franchise.

Jacob: Do you believe that the Cardinals' front office has showed a lack of planning considering they let Miles walk, and then fired Kennedy just before spring training, leaving us with a team that has little to no players with Major League experience at second base?
Jeff Gordon: Ryan has experience at second base, but, no, they should not have let Miles go knowing that The Skipper didn't want Kennedy.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

I keep seeing fans say we should trade down for additional picks, isn't this easier said then done with the way the NFL uses a point system where they assign points to each draft pick and then the points need to equal out?
Jeff Gordon: But if a team really wants a guy, that can change. Not sure this draft has those players.

superjim: Hi Gordo,

Last season I was pleased that we went with someone other than Jake Long as I felt we needed a defensive playmaker more than an OT (although I'd have selected Dorsey). This season there seem to be 3 o-tackles who could be the first selected o-lineman, so does that make one of them less likely to be picked 2nd overall? If there isn't much to separate the three, is taking one of them a reach at 2nd overall? If this is true, which is the most likely event in your opinion: 1. we draft one anyway, 2. we draft Crabtree, 3. we trade down

Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: Smith's body type scares some scouts. Can he play left tackle? Is Monroe better? That second overall pick will make lots of dough. He has to be an all-pro some day.

Michael Kent: Jeff ...

How much progress to you think Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick will make this season on cutting down the strikeouts? How close can they get to Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina in terms of plate discipline?

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Ah, a $10 million question. Both guys will make eight-digit salaries if they can cut down the Ks and put that power to more consistent use. Plate discipline! Ludwick has come a long way, but he can still improve. Ditto for Rick, who is still raw.

Armen Dacity: Gordo,

Who are the Rams sending as reps to the NFL Combine?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams will have 20 to 30 guys -- assistant coaches, scouts, scouting director, a lot of people.

Cards4520: Mu is good at basketball this year...but do you think they are really w/i the top ten? (right behind duke?)
Jeff Gordon: The fact they haven't faced Oklahoma helps. And they haven't played at KU. But, 17 wins in a row at home is really something.

eternalramnation: Thanks for these chats Gordo,

Any word, or rumors, coming out of Rams Park about other cap casualties that may be coming before February 27th to clear some additional cap room?

Also, are the Rams in negotiation to restructure Pace or Holt's contracts?
Jeff Gordon: Holt would be easier to restructure, either by the Rams or a team acquiring him. Pace has extra year.

There may be a few more cap hits before the end of next week as other teams let go players and set the marketplace.

therealdealankiel: All things considered, is Brett Wallace as highly touted 8 months into his career as Colby was? I understand he is not the 5-tool player Colby is, but he most definitely has the bigger and more consistent bat.
Jeff Gordon: Wallace proved himself at a high level in college. Rasmus is a better rounded player, but he is still making the climb from high school and is still maturing physically.

Frank Wild: Has there been any talk about Mark Gruzalanek (pardon the spelling). If he is healthy he would seem like a perfect fit if Schumacher made the move to second. Mark could play against the lefties that Schu can't hit plus could be a late inning defensive replacement. How is his health and is there interest. I thought LaRussa liked him.
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak's initial reaction was no, he wouldn't go back there.

jm: do you think if we move pace and holt , we can afford to make a high profile signing in freeagency , such as peppers , gross ?
Jeff Gordon: Well, sure, if you can move both. But can you replace both? That is the gamble.

Andrew: Jim, Thanks for your Time, Who Are some free agents the you see the Rams Going After? Are we in the market for a Jordan Gross? Or a Terrell Suggs?
Jeff Gordon: The Ravens really want to keep Suggs, even if it means letting Lewis leave. (Gasp.)

TONYBUS: GORDO,
WHO DO YOU FEEL CAN CHALLENGE BULGER OR AT LEAST BE READY TO TAKE OVER ONCE HE HAS HIS 2009 CONCUSSION(NO ILL WILL)? HOW MANY GAMES INTO THE SEASON WILL S.JACKSON COMPLAIN ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see Spagnuolo putting up with a whole lot of that, especially since the whole gameplan this season will be feeding him the ball and improving the blocking in front of him.

There is not a great group of available QBs. Teams were fighting over Bruce Gradkowski, for goodness sakes. A guy like Anderson would be interesting.

Drew Brucker: Gordo

Will the Rams make an effort to grab a playmaker on the special teams side of the ball (via the draft or FA)? Gary Stills made an instant impact with his tackling, but what about a returner that makes teams sweat?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams keep drafting and acquiring would-be kick returners . . . and they can't find the home-run hitter. Maclin, anybody? if the Rams move back in the first round, maybe that could happen.

Jackker: Gordo, any report on how Kahlil looked today in ST?
Jeff Gordon: Check with Joe and Derrick elsewhere on the site. They are working spring training 24/7.

J.Brad: Hey Gordo!
thaks for answering questions and not making everyone grovel like "Chatmeister" does over at JSL...
I have a feeling Izzy will get a minor league deal and if healthy possibly help groom the youngsters. am I off the mark here or is everyone who will be at camp already there?

J.B. in TN
Jeff Gordon: Something else can always happen, especially for an old friend.

Unn: Hi, Jeff!
Where is Mike Martz? Is there any chance of him landing a job in St Louis this year or next? Thank you
Jeff Gordon: Mad Mike is telling people that Rams people (RE: Jay Zygmunt) are having him blackballed from the league. This guy is crazy.

elikim353: Hey Gordo,
Any interest in released Leigh Bodden?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Good question. He's there now. Not sure what Devaney things of him.

Michael: Just started thinking to myself bout the 2nd base situation...Is a sign and trade legal in baseball? Could a team such as the Yankees sign an Orlando Hudson (Type A) free agent and then trade him to the Cards for a prospect?

Seems to make a little sense, but I don't know what the CBA says about it. I use the Yankees because it seems they would have the least to loose. The Yanks have already surrenderred their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounders with Type As. What does a 4th rounder cost?
Jeff Gordon: There is a lot of talk about such deals, especially with guys like Juan Cruz

jm: do you think there could be interest in freeagent ot k barnes from jacksonville?
Jeff Gordon: Sounds like a depth guy.

From the Sporting News: "Barnes is adequate in pass protection but is not a strong run blocker and simply hasn't developed into the player Jacksonville expected. With the eighth overall pick in the draft, the Jags are in position to grab a top-flight tackle prospect. Translation: Barnes might not be back."

MRR: Jeff,
I've been reading Joe Torre's new book. He talks about the change in the Yankees philosophy to a more statisitical analysis of players as being one of the things that made his moving on inevitable.
It seems to me that the Cardinals front office is also making this change. Here is the question: Where does LaRussa fall? Can he make the switch? Can the Cardinals mesh the best of both worlds? I hope so.
Jeff Gordon: Good questions. Old schoolers bristle at this stuff. When a guy with a calculator vetoes a trade or a free-agent signing, guys like Torre, Piniella and TLR go nuts. That said, if the star nerds help secure a bunch of top prospects, then you get more open minded.

Thanks for all your questions today. See you next week!
