Jonny Faux: Hey Gordo,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question
It is becoming more obvious by the game that the Blues are sincerely lacking an offensive puck moving defenseman. If the blues are able to unload one of their overpaid defenseman ( Backman / McKee ) who would be available via trade or in this upcoming free agency? Thanks for taking the time to answer my question I greatly appreciate your info.
Jeff Gordon: There are a number of offensive defensemen in play -- T. Kaberle, Boyle, Blake, Stuart -- but I don't know if there is a great fit there. E. Johnson will grown into the quarterback role and Murray hopes Brewer will grow from a second power-play unit guy to a true first-unit guy.
If the Blues moves some salary from the blue line, I look for them to put the money into a forward. Don't forget, Wagner and Polak are front-burner prospects. They will be next year, if healthy. And Wagner could be a nice offensive defenseman.
Kevin Weber: With the word of the delay in Clement's rehab, do you think it will force Mo to reconsider signing another pitcher, ie Weaver
Jeff Gordon: Could be, unless Reyes, Thompson and Wellemeyer all roar to fast start this spring. Clement's potential April absence IS a concern, one that could change Mozeliak's outlook.
Wayne W: With the rumor that Walsh does have the tapes of the Rams practice, Spector not going away and the class action lawsuit filed in Louisana it looks like the NFL will have to act. Either the NFL,Spector,or the lawsuit will make Walsh show the tapes and unless its the NFL it can get ugly for the league. With the tapes on display what do you think the leagues response will be and is there a chance that the Rams will be given draft picks as compensation?
Thanks Wayne from San Diego
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't get your hopes up. Belichick's denial is interesting, because it suggest that Walsh acted on his own if he did anything. Arlen is working hard for the Rams and other impacted teams, but I'm sure Goodell wants to out this to bed ASAP. As for the lawsuit, that's not going anywhere.
Terry Griesenauer, Atlanta: Now that it has already been determined that Clement will not be available to start the season, is the starting rotation already falling apart? Will the 2008 starting pitching just be a replay of 2007 with a few different characters? Weaver seems like a logical addition and should come relatively cheap. Is he still available? Duncan had him pitching great at the end of 2006 and in the post season. Your thoughts.....
Jeff Gordon: The thing with Weaver, though, is that it took a LONG time to get him on track last time. Again, the progress (or lack thereof) of Reyes, Wellemeyer and Thompson this spring will dictate what happens.
drelboc: Hey Gordo;
From this fans standpoint, the 2008 Cardinal Baseball season will be interesting to watch due to the youth movment and the injured starting pitchers we hope to have back in productive form. But if the opinions ring true from the so called "expert" prognostigators and this 08 team begins to pile up the losses early and can't compete with in its division, do you think the teams psychy will be deminished to where it effects their fundamental play and overall hustle on the field? That would be TLR'S and the fans worst nightmare.
Thank you once again for your valuable time with us fans Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: If injuries mount and the team goes south, TLR would use the year to play as many kids as possible and get a head start on 2009. I don't believe he would allow dispirited veterans to drag the team down.
Paula Alexander: Jeff, I would like to know the up date on Issac Bruce, is he going to be released? I have been a Ram's fan for 49 years back to the LA days on my dad's knee at the 50 yrd line. I was at the Super Bowl when we beat the Titans and at the Super Bowl when we lost to the Pats I have been a Rams fan for a very long time and I have seen a lot of Rams games and I mean alot I try not to miss a one and that day in New Orleans I just knew something was really wrong and now 6 years later I finally know the truth.
Jeff Gordon: With Al Saunders as offensive coordinator, I see the Rams making every effort to keep Ike in the mix. Al uses more 3- and 4-WR sets than Linehan, so there will be room for Ike AND a new impact receiver.
Andrew: Now that Matt Clement isn't going to be ready and neither is Mark Mulder, what are the Cardinals going to do until May? ? ?
Could we see another signing now that they now that Matt isn't going to be ready or do we see what happens in ST.....
Jeff Gordon: With Clement, Mulder AND Carpenter all coming back as the season progresses, the Cards are in a funny spot. A free agent with options would be reluctant to sign here now, since he would be looking at a stopgap role. A FA with no other choices could emerge, however. Weaver is waiting for somebody to get hurt somewhere, but he's on the outside looking in now.
Danny: Jeff,
Concerning Pujols's elbow, how much power or bat speed is generated from that arm during the swing? I am under the impression that power comes from the legs. 32 homers (last year, a career low) with a bum arm and hamstrings? We should all be so unfortunate...
Jeff Gordon: He has played in a lot of pain and continued to hit HRs. The danger, though, is that the elbow ligament will just pop someday -- forcing him into ligament replacement surgery and a nine-month rehab.
Joe: Jeff,
I've heard Demarco Farr, Dick Vermeil, and Dan Dierdorf say that video-taping the Rams' pre-Super Bowl practice would not have made much difference. I'm confused - How could there be no value in knowing what plays will come out of particular offensive arrangement? Seems like gold to me! If there was not value, why would a team risk so much to do this? And if taping isn't such a big deal, why did the clowns who run the NFL give the Patriots the hefty penalty for taping defensive signals of a regular season game, a game that is unarguably less important than the NFL's premier championship game? What a league!
Jeff Gordon: If you are doing a walk through after photo day, you just assume the thing could be taped. You just do. Martz was paranoid about this stuff, which is why the screens were put up at Rams Park. I can't believe he would expose much in this venue.
Mad Mike failed to adjust to the game. The Patriots got away with physically mauling the Rams receivers to take them out of their routes. They sat back in coverage and dared the Rams to throw underneath -- and then they tried to force fumbles. Mike's failure to adjust during the first half forced him into catch-up mode. His stubborn approach was a bigger problem than Spygate.
Jeremy (Denver): Gordo,
I have a question that is a little off-topic regarding the Rams. What happened to Aeneas Williams? Better yet, why did he have such a quiet retirement?
Jeff Gordon: Good question. He just sort of went away, without fanfare. We all kept waiting for him to try a comeback, but it never came.
Ramfan 1969: As you can tell by the name I've been around a few years. I played football I've coach football and there are a lot of question on this team, I don't think that Scott L is as bad as everyone else thinks he is and I like the fact that he went out and got help. My question is who and when, where do we go in the draft, my thoughts are talcke what are yours. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: If Jake Long was another Orlando Pace, I'd take him. But he's not, so the disruptive DE would be a better bet. The Rams have similar issues at both positions, but the C. Long appears to be the better pick there.
Gabriel to Snow: I am heartened by recent events. 30 days ago having Al Saunders as an OC & reeling in a LEGITIMATE personnel man in Billy Devaney seemed even less likely than the Pats stubbing their toe on the brink of immortality. I'm even enthused about Shea for a new QB coach. The offseason couldn't have gotten off to a much better start. Let's hope we feel the same after the draft, free agency & cap management. So far, so good. Do you see it the same way Gordo?
One other item. I believe J. Wade was a WR before switching to DB in college. Has anyone ever toyed with the idea of seeing if he is capable of learning a few routes? I assume he is a well known speedster, a handful of plays with him in the lineup could help cause confusion for the defense & actually create some gaps if he just ran some deep routes. I can't imagine what harm could come from the attempt. I'd love to know what Wade thinks of the idea. If he likes the thought, maybe he could ask Al if he is open to it. Any chance of contacting Wade to hear his input? I am sure he would not be another Roy Green. But why not explore versatility in a player who currently does NOT play every down. Am I nuts here?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams already have an explosive guy in Stanley to groom at WR. And they need Wade to grow as a cornerback. He is still raw, for the reasons you noted.
Justin: How goes it, Gordo? Well it's about that time of year - What can you tell us about potential free agents? Any idea who the Rams might be interested in, or who you think they should be interested in?
Jeff Gordon: Free agency is tough to read this year. The salary cap is expected to increase to $116 million, leaving no more than a half-dozen teams hamstrung. We're seeing some big names (Alge Crumpler, Zach Thomas) get released, but the most teams will have a better-than-usual chance to keep their prime-age free agents.
Leroy D. of Olpe, KS: Dear Gordo,
If and when the spygate tapes are revealed concerning Super Bowl 36, practice plays matched up with actual game footage, showing the Patriots WAITING to stuff the play. If this can be proven in a convincing manner, I believe the Rams organization should declare Bill Belicheck and the Patriots as thieves, and that the unstoppable Rams team of Super Bowl 36 as the real victors. Even with the cheating, that Rams team almost won, ANYWAY.
What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Had the Rams adjusted their offense to the officiating and the New England game plan, they could have won. Had they held onto more footballs, they would have won. They did not play smart enough or efficiently enough. Had they played to their full ability and lost because of espionage, then they should be outraged. But they played below their ability in the biggest game.
Tim: Just kind of a thought here. what do you think?
Move Carriker out to DE, Sign Corey williams and stick him in aT NT along with Clifton Ryan at DT, Draft Chris Long (if he's there) and I know this seems dumb but move Lenord Little to OLB.
Jeff Gordon: At this stage of his career, Little couldn't really play OLB. He has good cover skills for a DE, but he's no Will Witherspoon in that regard.
Tim: Do you thin David Perron has 40 goal potential?
WHat kind of stats do you see Patrik Burgland putting up?
Jeff Gordon: Perron is really exceptional. He could become a Dany Heatley type player as he gets stronger and continues to work on his skating. And I would expect Patrick Berglund to grow into a point-per-game role.
Tim: what do you think the Rams will do for OLB? Id like to see them sign Zach Thomas and move Witherspoon to outside. But Id like to here the wisdom of the greatest colmnist that ever lived?
Jeff Gordon: Thomas has stated that he does NOT want to go to a rebuilding team. And his age/injury history make him just a short-term option for a team trying to win right now.
Scott L: Assuming there is a trade, with Oshie and Berglund liekly on the roster next fall, do you trade for a top six winger, or ask for picks?
It seems like with those two adde dyou should have 8 or 9 guys for your top two scoring lines
Jeff Gordon: Berglund, in particular, will need some time to adapt to the NHL game. Stempniak and Backes are still defining their value. And Tkachuk is in his twilight. So if the Blues could make a move on a prime-age "top six" forward, I would expect John Davidson to go for it.
In the new NHL, coaches want to roll three scoring lines if possible.
Tim: Are you hearing any rumors on who the Blues might be taking a run at for trade?
Jeff Gordon: If the Flames want to move Tanguay's salary (and they do), the Blues will pay attention. If Marian Hossa goes up for sale, they will pay attention to that as well. But a lot of teams will be bidding for those guys.
Tim: Do you think Rasmus will be the starting center fielder opening day? What spot in the order will he most likley be at?
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus needs a remarkable spring to make the team out of spring training, since the squad has so many CF options. If he sticks, Barton and/or Schumaker would have to go. By giving Colby time at Memphis, the club could assess other players and perhaps build up their assets.
But if Rasmus is great, then he could become the most obvious leadoff candidate in camp.
Tim: What kind of role do you see Walters and Ottavino in when they reach the majors?
Jeff Gordon: They are being groomed as starters, but we'll see. Some scouts see Ottavino as a middle reliever.
Tim: Do you think Hoffpauir has the ability to be an everyday second baseman?
what about Joe Mather could he start of is he nothing more than a power hitting bench player?
Jeff Gordon: Both guys figure to start at Memphis, play every day and make their case. We'll see. Mather had a power surge last season, but now we have to see if it continues.
Jadey Ornelas: Who should the Rams get to back up Bulger. I know Trent Green is out there, is he a good fit? Any ideas?
Jeff Gordon: Saunders is a Todd Collins fan -- and we watched him do a nice job last year for him in Washington. That might be the way to go. Al obviously loves Green, too, and the back-up role might be better for him after all the abuse he took.
Frank: Gordo-
What is your take on this lawsuit being filed by the former Rams player against the Patriots?
Jeff Gordon: To me, it's silly. If the Patriots cheated, then the NFL should act as it did before. Fine them, take away a draft pick, whatever. But come on, it's like they poisoned the Rams and walked over their prone bodies to win. The Rams beat themselves in that game as much as New England did.
Jingles: Gordo: Is David Perron having the kind of season the Blues imagined he would? And what about the team's other two first round choices from 2007? When will we see them in the NHL?
Jeff Gordon: Perron is easily exceeding expectations. He was supposed to go back to junior hockey for a year, then need time in the AHL.
Lars Eller is having a nice year in Europe, but he missed some time with a wrist injury. It would be nice to get him to the AHL next season and the NHL the year after that. Also, defenseman Ian Cole could be two years away. He played at the World Junior Championships this year and showed well.
Hugh: Gordo-
What is the status of Isaac Bruce? Is he going to be in a Rams uniform next season? And, we keep hearing how Orlando Pace is working harder than ever to get back in form, but what about Alex Barron? Is he doing anything to improve his game? Shouldn't he be working out with Pace?
Jeff Gordon: Barron's physical conditioning isn't the issue. It's the mental stuff. He needs to come to training camp focused and ready to take Next Step. If he does, he will earn many more millions on his next contract.
Duncan: Gordo-
What kind of numbers do you think Rasmus will put up in the big leagues? I hope we're not getting excited about a guy that'll hit .280 with 10 HRS...Is he really as good as advertised? It seems like there is an awful lot of pressure on him, considering that he was basically untouchable as far as trades went this offseason.
Jeff Gordon: If he hit .280, 15 to 20 homers, lots of doubles, some stolen bases and a good glove in CF, he will meet expectations. He should become a very well-rounded, multi-dimensional player. He is NOT Ken Griffey Jr.
Marcus: Hey, Gordo!
Since getting the C on his Blues jersey, Mr Roboto (Eric Brewer) has been playing pretty steady. Do you think that we (as Blues fans) have been overly critic of Brewer (esp. so earlier this season) and what can we expect from him from here on?
Jeff Gordon: Fans were excessively negative, yes. Eric had a few rough stretches this season, but his overall play is MUCH higher than previous seasons. Coming in the Pronger trade put him on the hit list and he had trouble dealing with all the acrimony and expectations.
Henry: Hi Jeff,
With all the changes to the Rams staff, how much of a difference do you think it will make?
Do you think the Rams will be active in free agency?
Will the hiring of Devaney make much difference? And will his recommendation be overruled by Zygmunt? If so, there is no difference for the sorry Rams.
Jeff Gordon: Devaney will have a lot of say. Jay knows if gets too involved in the football side, Chip Rosenbloom may have questions down the road.
The Rams WILL be active in free agency, certainly, but this could be a disappointing market for a lot of reasons. As for the coaching changes, look for dramatic offensive improvement.
Michael McGuire: Hey Jeff! First off thanks for all of your great work over the years. Love your columns! My question is about the 100m lawsut filed against the Patriots. I have read a lot of opinion on blogs and such that this is just another frivolous lawsuit wasting time in America's courts and such. It seems to me, though, that it might not be about the money so much as getting the issue into a court of law where the lawyers can then subpoena the Walsh tapes and have them in the hands of actual authorities. This way they would not be subject to Goodell's evidence destroying whims and could be brought to light for EVERYONE to see. Also, the large dollar value of the suit assures that it will make headlines because, let's face it, nothing under 50m is even a blip on the radar nowadays. Have you heard anything on this or have any insights? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: We do need to hear what Walsh has to say. Maybe he saved everything, just as McNamee did. I believe Specter won't let up until we get the final word on this issue. Could this lawsuit help? Maybe, but it's still frivolous.
David Carriger: Any chance the Rams will inquire about the availability of Kris Jenkins again? IF we were to acquire him , How does it effect the Rams 1st round pick?
Jeff Gordon: Once again, Kris is on the block. But the Rams have Clifton Ryan in that spot. The Rams could use a third big body to rotate in, but I'm not sure that is Jenkins. And the Rams are looking at DEs and OTs high in the draft. Defensive tackle is actually a team strength.
RamFanInPA: How much contibution can the Rams hope to get from Adam Carriker next season? If he will not be available until training camp, how much essential weight training will he be able to perform? I see next year as a possible "lost season" for Adam. Also, is Claude Wroten a lost cause?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: After his utter failure last year, I'd write off Wroten. As for Carriker, I don't know if the Rams are THAT worried. But weight retention could become a big issue, even if Adam ends up playing more DE.
Michael B.: I heard the Giants had a couple of Major League ready pitching prospects they were ready to trade for a 3rd baseman. Why didn't the Cards go for that when they traded Rolen knowing we needed pitching badly? Good pitching is a must and especially if they are young.
Jeff Gordon: That was an option, especially with Feliz out there as a FA, waiting to play third base for somebody. But Glaus adds a much-needed power boost from the right side. And I doubt the Giants would have gambled on Rolen's salary, given the state of their team.
Buzz: Gordo,
One thing bugs me about the Matt Clement situation. Didn't Clement and his agent say he was 100 percent ready to go, that he was no longer in the rehab stage? Didn't they say that if there was an issue, it was whether his arm would tire late in the season? The man should know his own body. He should have known if he had the arm strength to keep up with the other starters. Are the Cards victims of false advertising in an effort to get a contract? Or was Clement lax in preparing for spring training? Either way, this is very frustrating. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Frustrating, but normal. Shoulder surgery is dicey. The Cards knew Matt would be a reclamation project, which is why the franchise offered the contract it did.
NMBob: Why do I keep hearing Mo say things like they may need only 2 number five pitcher starts in april..and others say "with the days off in april" when the truth is the cards play 28 games in 29 days in april. How does Mo not account that to 5 starts for number 5 starter? Even with a rainout they are still at 4. What am I missing..all I can figure is it is misleading fans in Mo arguing to not sign another pitcher..which with the clement news..makes it all just another cards disappintment...
Jeff Gordon: I've always started that using a four-man rotation, if only for one or two times through, is a bad idea. It just adds wear and tear. If Clement really will need extra time and IF Wellemeyer, Reyes and Thompson can't fill in, then I agree -- add another hurler.
But as I noted earlier, who is to say a guy like Weaver could help in April? He would need a lot of work after failing miserably for Seattle last year.
Jack Cramond: Jeff,
We have been told that Rosenbloom may sell the rams. Since this is somewhat important to all ram fans, do you have any updates concerning this issue?????
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, he may sell - but there is no rush. Bernie Miklasz is close to the situation and he believes it could take years to get to that point.
Brian from Vegas: Gordo,
Even though I have to give the Rams credit for making changes in the offseason, I am concerned they have too many people involved in the final decision making on player personnel. My count is 5 people - President of Football Operations/General Manager is Jay Zygmunt, Executive Vice President of Player Personnel in Billy Devaney, a Vice President of Player Personnel in Tony Softli, Lawrence McCutheon is Director of Player personnel and Scott Linehan gets to vote on player personnel. If the Dolphins pick Matt Ryan, and the Rams 5 split 2 votes for Glenn Dorsey 2 votes for Chris Long and one vote for Jake Long, what do the Rams do, flip a coin? This organization is too unwieldy.
Jeff Gordon: Every football operation has a big crowd in the war room. As Devaney said, the staff will have the players ranked long before draft day. There may be spirited discussions, but a consensus will emerge.
Kevin: Jeff,
Clement and Mulder after the All Star break. Carpenter will be on the old Morris schedule after surgery - two innings every 3 or 4 days - in September. Reality sets in...why won't they deal for a healthy starter?
Sign Weaver, Fogg, Perez or Lohse. OR, trade for Capuano, Padilla or another. Why won't they just add a starter?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Clement after the all-star break? Mulder after the all-star break? Carpenter out until September? If all is true, the Mozeliak needs to sign three pitchers today.
Bob Huber: I am always amazed when i see Red Schoendienst still around hanging out with the players. I just seen a video of him at spring training dressed in his Cardinal uniform. I have fond memories of him from the 60s and i love the fact that he still enjoys the game. He must be around *!#? years old by now and still looks great. What is his secret to longevity and his role with the Cardinal's these day's.
Jeff Gordon: I wish I had his secret, since I'm feeling a lot older myself these days. As for his role, it's all about observing and teaching in spring training. TLR has always valued his opinion.
donald s box: Hey Gordo what do you think about the cardinals going a complete youth movement. Bring up some young pitchers and give them a urly break in. we are not going any place any how,so lets get a early start.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but if guys like Jaimie Garcia and Chris Perez get shelled early, it doesn't help. And Thompson, Wellemeyer and Thompson have lots of years left in their careers. Let's see what they do before calling for Class AA hurlers.
Will Patterson: I have heard that thier is a lefty starter in the minors who is legit. Is he good enough to make the team this year. When he does make it what can be expected from him. I just read that Clemet will not be ready to start the season, and I think that Looper will not even be an average starter this year. This rotation needs help.
Jeff Gordon: Garcia is legit. And, yes, he could even pitch in the bigs this year at some point. Had he not developed a sore elbow last year, he might have gotten a late taste in '07.
Terry: Jeff,
Considering all the speculation with Cardinal starting pitching, what are the chances of Cards bringing back
Jeff Weaver? I hear he is on the market & more importantly, HEALTHY!
Terry
Grand Rapids, MI.
Jeff Gordon: It took months to rehab Weaver last time. If he is coming here, he needs to come soon and get to work. I wouldn't be shocked if the Cards gave him a minor league tryout, but anything more than that would be silly. The guy blew up last year.
ramhntr: Jeff-
Can you give us any insight to the players reaction-namely Bulger, Bruce and Holt-to the hiring of Al Saunders? I am hoping with a better offensive scheme and production, it will take alot of pressure off the defense. Haslett and the rest of the defensive coaches have taken their share of heat for poor defensive numbers-but I think it was clear that many times they were put in poor positions due to turnovers, etc. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Saunder's hiring was met with enthusiasm. The outlook is much brighter.
Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff, I was lucky enough to go to Thursday nights game. I like the direction that the Blues are heading. My questions are.
1. If things don't change between Jackman and the Blues
what do you see the Blues doing?
2. Who do you think we could get for him?
3. Do you see the Blues keeping Salvador?
4. Do you think the young Blues defensmen could make up for the lose of both?
Thank You for your time Jeff and
Let's Go Blues!!
Jeff Gordon: Could the Blues replace both? Sure. Walker can play. So can Woywitka. So can Wagner. So can Polak. I do think the best decision would be to keep one and trade one. Jackman might fetch a prospect and a draft pick.
Jim: Hey Gordo, we are about 2 weeks from FA. Have you heard any potential FA names floating around Rams park? I would like to see the rams go after Justin Smith and Jacob Bell. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Too early on FAs, still, since a lot of these guys will resign. Few teams have cap problems right now.
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
I guess I must have been sleeping underneath a rock these past few months. Why did the Cards' suddenly give up on left-handed pitcher Troy Cate? I see he's now a ron-roster invitee with the A's.
Cate showed promise last year during his call-up. If you toss out one bad outing against Atlanta, his ERA was someting like 1.15. Though he was used soley as a reliever while he was in St. Louis, Cate also showed promise as a starter when he played winter ball in Mexico in '06. Even if he couldn't make it as a starter, didn't he prove his worth out of the bullpen? Besides, don't the Cards need another left-hander in the bullpen?
It just doesn't make sense that Cate is cast away so suddenly while Anthony Reyes continues to be given opportunities in the organization.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards may add an experienced LF reliever if Duncan doesn't like what he sees from the current group. Cate was OK, but now the team is stacking up prospects for the bullpen. There seems to be plenty of competition for long-relief help without Cate.
Todd Fechtman: Gordo,
It always amazes me that diehard Mizzou basketball fans want the current coach to recruit from within the state of Missouri. The bottom line is there just isn't enough D-1 talent in the state of Missouri to compete nationally or in the Big 12 for that matter. Why don't we go to the Chicago area or the great state of Indiana?
You know the other definition of a Hoosier, it's called an actual basketball player.
Do you think Majerus has a SLU turtleneck instead of the black one he wears every single game? It is a very slimming look.
Jeff Gordon: There is plenty of talent in Missouri, but no coach can keep all of it. And, yes, you have to look all over for players. Chicago is dicey because of the, um, recruiting expectations.
MRR: OK-As much as I hate to admit this, it looks like it is time to call Scott Boras and see if Weaver would like to have a job for the summer.
I was hopeful that Clement would be ready on Opening Day and then Mulder and finally Carpenter would follow. Instead it looks like we need Jeff Weaver!
Jeff Gordon: But if Weaver needs two or three months to find his groove, what good is he?
Matt: Gordo, I have two questions.
1. Given Glaus is a short term solution to third what does the Cardinals have planned for the hot corner in the up coming years?
2. Duncan scares me defensively in left field any thoughts of moving him to an Amercian League team for a prototype outfield lead off hitter? Both Ankiel and Rasmus seem more suited for the two slot.
Jeff Gordon: Duncan could move at some point, sure. Or if can play OK in left, his power will really help the middle of the batting order.
Glaus is here for two years, at least. After that, Freese and Craig are the two players in line. Neither is a sure thing, though,
jrocke217: with clement's arm not working out like it was expected for mozeliak. where do you see the cardinals going with options wise now? i don't see the cards making moves to acquire a starter via trade or free agency, even though i wouldn't mind seeing a push for josh fogg now. and the options being thompson, wellemeyer, parisi, boggs, & mcclellan. reyes looks to be a lock in the rotation. i know it's a long shot for garcia, walters, & the various others. how bout tossing kelvin jimenez into the mix, he's got past experience.
Jeff Gordon: As the spring evolves, the picture will clarify. Unless there is reason to believe that Clement will need more than a few rehab start at Memphis, I don't see much urgency right now to make a deal.
jrocke217: with the talk of albert pujols & his elbow. let's just throw out a scenerio here. he opts to take the surgery this season & sit out. are 1b options look like this: duncan, phelps, speizio, mather, jimenez, & washington. do the cardinals take a chance at moving duncan back to first to later next year move him right back to lf? i think it would be a mistake to move duncan around after having him make the transition to left already(and that has been quite a move for him).
Jeff Gordon: It wouldn't kill Chris to split 1B with Phelps if Albert went down. This guy has more mental toughness than, say, Todd Zeile.
Jim Glines: Thanks, Jeff for all of your patience answering our unanswerable questions about the Rams. Who do you see the team looking at in the way of Free Agent signings and how far will they go protect our own Free Agents. Also, are Gus F. days numbered and will the Rams attempt to sign a better #2 for Mark?
I like the direction this team took after the seasosn. It looks like they are really trying to right the ship!
Jeff Gordon: Saunders' view of the back-up QB differs from Linehan's view. So, yes, Gus could exit. The Rams will certainly look at an assortment of free agents, since their needs are many. But several interesting FAs have already come off the market, since most teams have the cap space to keep key people.
Tom Peinemann: HI, I was curious what kind of direction the Rams will be going in free agency and the draft. It would be great to pick up a guy like Alan Fanaca. Also, would the Rams go for a talent like Dorsey falls into our laps or do you think they'll take the conservative approach and Jake Long from Michigan? I know we picked Carriker last year, but moving him back to end and sliding Dorsey inside mite not be a bad Idea...I'm also hearing good things about Chris Long if Miami doesn't take him.
Regards,
Tom
Jeff Gordon: Dorsey would be interesting, since I'm not sure Carriker could be an impact DE. That is why Chris Long is so interesting.
Elliott: Jeff,
Thanks for the forum. I don't believe the Cards are contenders this year. Too many things would have to go right for that to happen. That being said, I see the Clement issue provides Wellemeyer, Reyes, and Thompson effectively an extended Spring Training in order to compete for a true starting role. This could increase the trade potential (particularly for Reyes) for after Clement and Mulder are able to return. I also see the development of Perez possibly allowing the Cards to move either Thompson or Wellemeyer at the deadline. Do you see this working out this way? Thanks for any comments.
Jeff Gordon: There is the cup-half-full approach -- the Cards will have a chance to develop some pitching depth while the veterans heal. If all goes well, they WILL be in position to deal. And that is a good thing.
David from Columbia: Will the setback of Clement finally urge the Cards to go out and get somebody we know can at least eat up innings? We all know what you get from Weaver, but he pitches instead of sits. Wouldn't it be fairly easy right now to sign a guy to a cheap 1-year, incentive laden deal and get an innings eater? Fogg? Lohse? Odalis? Thomson? Anybody?
Jeff Gordon: Lohse still assumes he will strike it big. Fogg is holding out for a multi-year deal, something that doesn't interest the Cards right now.
John: Thanks for the weekly Q&A, Gordo. My question has to do with the outlook of pitchers coming back from major surgeries nowadays. What's the overall success rate (excellent, good, fair, poor) for pitchers getting back to pre-injury form after 1) elbow ligament replacement surgery, and 2) major shoulder/rotator cuff surgery? Do the Cards take more gambles on surgically repaired pitchers (Carp, Mulder, Clement, Politte, Kinney--all just this year) than other teams?
Jeff Gordon: What is unusual is having two top-of-the-rotation guys coming back at the same time, Carpenter and Mulder. That is tough. But every spring training roster features repaired pitchers of some sort.
Pitchers are much more likely to recover fully from elbow ligament replacement than from rotator cuff surgery.
G. Robert Turner: I have been a Cardinal fan for over 60 years and I can't believe that the new GM is this bad. Clement was to be our savior. Now he may be on pace to come back with Carp. or not at all. I don't like the lies coming out of the front office. Maybe hillary should be in charge. At least we know not to believe politions. What do you think.
Jeff Gordon: Clement was always going to be a rehab project. He was never going to be a savior. And it's WAY TOO EARLY to write him off for four months.
danielc: hey gordo,
What are the cardinals plans with Anthony Reyes up to this point? I would love to see him win that 5th spot or maybe 4th spot now that Clement may not be ready opening day!!
Jeff Gordon: He has every chance to earn that spot now. There is nobody in his way. It's up to him. If he throws well, he's in.
Jeff Krause: Jeff. what are Lohse's salary demands? are they just way too high for anyone to give him a shot? Could the Cardinals sign him if need be? Finally how outfielders do you see making the opening day roster? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Kyle was looking for $40 million for four years. Which explains why he remains unsigned.
danielc: Gordo Projection time
Avg-HR-RBI
Duncan,Pujols,Ankiel,Glaus,Molina,Rasmus,Izturis,Kennedy, -and whoever else you want to add
-Thanks for Responding
Jeff Gordon: Off the top of my head . . .
Duncan .280, 35, 92
Pujols .330, 32, 115
Ankiel .270, 28, 85
Glaus .265, 31, 104
Molina .270, 10, 51
Rasmus .275, 4, 17 (late call-up_
Izturis .255, 0, 15
Kennedy .270, 8, 35
That's pretty optimistic, obviously. And there will be a LOT of strikeouts in there, even if it goes well.
Buzz: Gordo,
In order for the Blues to play each game like the seventh game of a playoff series, Manny must play each game. With Chris Beckford-Tseu or Toivonen in goal, it would be like playing the seventh game of the exhibition season. Can Manny's knee possibly hold up to that kind of wear and tear? Is a trade for a decent backup feasible? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Could the Blues add a better back-up? Sure. Toivonen needs to straighten out in a couple of weeks or that might be necessary.
Brian: Cardinals, Cardinals, Cardinals.
I would like to use your forum for a fan revolt. Bernie hit the nail on the head in this morning's column. How long are we going to let these owners lie to us?
1. Weak free agent market, so we aren't spending (every year)
2. Hurt players that will be ready by spring training
2008 Predictions:
Albert is done and on the DL by June
Todd Wellemeyer is the ace of staff
Mulder comes back and gets blown out
The outfield is a major disaster with errors and no hitting.
Thank you very little.
Jeff Gordon: No hitting in the outfield? That's not going to happen. Duncan can mash the mall. Ankiel can run hot and cold, but he'll put up some numbers.
Wellemeyer is the ace of the staff? Why no love for Wainwright?
Could it be a tough year? Sure. Could Albert go down? Absolutely. But they play the kids, see where Carpenter, Mulder and Clement are by the end of the year and retool accordingly.
DeWitt has been very honest in his approach. There is no BS there. He may not spend to our liking, but I don't see where the lying comes in. And the guy DID deliver the city's first World Championship since 1982. So there's that.
Landon: Do you think the Cubs or Houston is that much better than the Cards? Are the Cards going to make any other deals? I think they are in good shape as long as everyone stays healthy.
Jeff Gordon: The Cubs and Brewers are much better, yes. Milwaukee will learn from last year's fade. The Astros I'm not sure about. Their inability to get young hitters over the top is baffling.
Gabriel to Snow: It will be interesting to see if Devaney tries to use Wroten & Byrd in any way. The obvious choice is to cut them. But I am not familiar with Devaney's track record on dealing with troubled players. Do you know of any examples that would correlate to the Byrd & Wroten situations?
Jeff Gordon: Anthony Hargrove, for one. Cut bait!
B: Are the Cards even enertaining the option of trying Skip Shumaker at second base. This makes alot of sense in my humble opinion. If I have to watch Adam Kennedy bat 220 again just because they are paying him much more...i will really be ticked off.
Jeff Gordon: If Kennedy hits .220 again, it won't be for long. TLR will cut him, contract or no contract. But then Miles would play and hit .280.
Andrew: GORDO! What is going on with Clement? How did we NOT know he wasn't going to be ready Opening Day?? BS! We as Cardinal fans deserve another SP signing. What's the chances of Mo going against his word and picking up a guy like Fogg or Weaver?? And just how good does Rasmus have to perform this Spring for him to get the starting job? He's the one thing i'm looking forward to this year.
Jeff Gordon: We'll see Rasmus at some point, but probably not to start. Too many other guys to sort through. Fogg has turned down $5 million per year, so that is a bit pricey for stopgap help.
Glenn Turner: What is your take on the front office and coaching moves made by the Rams so far? I hope Miami passes on Dorsey. he seems the best player available.
Jeff Gordon: Trouble is, drafting Dorsey would might Carriker to play out of position. He plays one of the few positions that went well for the Rams last year.
Glenn Turner: The Blues need two more legitimate goal scorers. Do you believe they already have drafted them and we just need to be patient? Will/can the Blues get another goalie to help Legace down the stretch?
Jeff Gordon: They have one of those guys in hand, Stempniak. He just went cold. But the Blues will look for a prime-age scorer at some point, given Rucinsky's exit after the year and Tkachuk's year-to-year status.
Ted: Jeff - Let's speculate for just a moment. Suppose that it is proven that the Patriots DID tape the Rams walkthrough before the superbowl and Billichick had knowledge of this and adjusted his game plan accordingly. Now what? Does that mean the Patriots will be stripped of their SB title and given to the Rams? I do not see this happening. I would hope that if proven, the Patriots get stripped of their title and severe fines and or inprisonment happens to all involved. Just my opinion..... Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Ah the hysteria . . . look, in the NFL, you should be able to invite your opponent to the walk-through, give them all video cameras and still execute your offensive gameplan. Once you see how the opponent reacts to plays A, B and C, then you show A, B and C and change your progressions.
Once you leave your complex, a team should always assume the other side knows what you do. That's just the way it is.
big ben: how come we're keeping linehan???? i mean is he the long term answer? do you think we shoud draft mcfadden how awesome of a 1---2 punch would he and jackson be? that seems to be the nfl trend now a days..... your thoughts
big ben from yonkers ny and yeas kennedy was horrible in hs at roosevelt i know i played there ...keep up the good worl gordo
Jeff Gordon: If you draft McFadden, then you lose the opportunity to keep Jackson long-term. And we know Jackson is an elite running/receiving threat. RB is one of the few things the Rams don't need.
Trevor: Hey Gordo - Assuming the Rams go with Howie's kid in the draft - where do they go in free agency? If we are going to 'spend to the cap', how much $$$ does that give us to spend? I would love to see help for the OL, specifically, Alan Fanica along with a center. What are our options in free agency? Any big splashes you forsee?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams won't spend to the cap, unless Chip Rosenbloom decides to go nuts. A few thoughts about potential free agents:
Lance Briggs: A huge impact linebacker and his eagerness to leave Chicago is well-documented. But why would he come to a 3-13 team?
Ken Hamlin: A big-hitting safety? That has been a novel concept with the Rams since Archuleta broke down. A guy like this would change everything.
Antwan Odom: The Titans may not be able to afford this DE and he CAN rush the QB. But what if the Rams believe Long will be there?
Randy Moss: Talk about a huge risk -- only a contender should go there, and only with a strong head coach. He ought to stay where he is.
Justin Smith: Solid DE, local-interest player -- but, again, could the Rams fill this need in the draft?
Alan Faneca: A 31-year-old guard isn't a great fit for a rebuilding team with two young starting guards coming back.
Flozell Adams: If the Rams bring Pace back, why would they spend big for a third startin-caliber tackle? The Rams need younger player here, as long as Pace IS going to play.
Glenn Turner: Clement will likely not be ready come April 1. Mulder (May Maybe???) Carpenter (August???). Do we sign another starter (Weaver/Fogg/Lohse)or are we just as good/bad off going with Reyes/Wellemeyer/Thompson and pray one of Boggs/Garcia/Hawkesworth/Ottavino/Pomeranz can help sometime this year if ready?
Jeff Gordon: This could be the year to break out the souvenir Cardinal rosary.
Denny: What is up with Tkachuk? Is it just me or is he not skating as hard as the rest of the team? He seems to be "waiting" for the puck to jump out at him, for a big play or something. The thing that really drives me crazy about him lately, is that every time an opposing player gets near him, he throws his hands up in the air like "Where is the call ref!?!?!?". You watch him, it happens several times a game. I have been a Tkachuk fan for many years, but it hasn't been looking good...
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but Andy Murray went out of his way to praise him Sunday night. And Walt did score. He is near the end, for sure, but I'd be more concerned about getting tounger players like Stempniak and Toivonen on track.
Glenn Turner: The young talent in the NHL is the best I can remember for a long time. I hear this years draft is very deep also. Any chance the NHL gets a back on ESPN or a similar type network so we can see more of these toung players?
Jeff Gordon: Bettman went back to Versus, so the NHL will remain out of the limelight for the near term. Thanks, Gary.
Ron: Jeff, First off I'd like to thank both you and Jim very much for holding these offseason chats. I look forward toward them every week and it's very appreciated. My question is what was the real deal with Madison Hedgecock? Did he really play his way off the team or was it (as he claims)a case where he was playing hurt and taking one for the team and the Rams cut him anyway despite knowing that was the case. I've heard conflicting reports both ways and I was hoping you could clear this up for me once and for all. Thanks again Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: I talked to Madison again at the Super Bowl. Did the Rams really dislike his attitude? If so, that is ridiculous. The kid did play hurt here. For the team to cut him and keep another kid with a poor work ethic, Dominique Byrd . . . well, that is outrageous.
matt"mvp"stroehmer: I've heard that TJ Oshie is a potential 70-goal scorer. that's a lot of goals. is he? or is this just hype? what player in the nhl would you compare him too?
Jeff Gordon: He'd love to become another Brad Boyes. He has great instincts, but I don't know if he has Boyes' pure scoring ability. Brad was a phenomenal junior scorer.
okdaniels: since it is getting to look like we have the #2 pick but there really is not a player that is worth that pick with chris long being the safest pick out of dorsey, ryan and jake long. i believe we need to trade down, even if we lose out value wise but if we say pick up dallas's two 1st rd picks this year , their 2 and 3 this year and maybe their 1st next year i do not see how we could just let that go.i like chris long.
Jeff Gordon: Long would be an impact DE. It's tough to pass that up.
Gabriel to Snow: Gordo, do you agree that if Roy Williams is attainable for anything less than a #1 pick, we should snatch him?
Jeff Gordon: Detroit wants a second rounder, but the Rams can get a very good player with their high second rounder. And then there is the matter of re-signing him to a contract extension. Saunders would have to be in love.
Dennis: Mr. Gordon if you were responsible for the Rams free agent acquisitions, who would you Target?
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th
Jeff Gordon: Hamlin, Briggs, Berrian, Gabril Wilson, Bryant Johnson. (Saunders would have to move in with him, though, and work on those hands.)
Kevin Weber: Cardinal offense question since there aren't too many out there. Does it worry you that the line-up will have a very large amount of strikeouts potentially ending or not even starting a lot of scoring chances.
Jeff Gordon: This is a very large concern. This lineup has power, but little speed and not so much ability to build innings.
Jeremy: You can't honestly believe Carpenter will pitch in '08 can you. It takes at least 12 months to come back from Tommy John and most people take 15 months. That puts it right about October. Hmm, to little to late. Isn't this his second Tommy John? isn't that what he had when we sgned him back in 2002? I can't see him doing anything more than Matt Morris did in 2000 as a long reliever. For all we know, the amount of work done on Carpenter and his arm, he may never pitch effectively again. On another note, Looks Like Reyes is a lock for that 4th spot now. Do you see him, Thompson, or Wellemeyer getting the bulk of starts in April. Since they don't need a 5th start that much, who gets the bulk of the work?
Jeff Gordon: Carpenter should be fine, unless he develops a related injury (as Josh Kinney did). The only shame with Chris is the amount of time the team wasted with its initial treatment plan.
Jeff\San Jose: Jeff, You've mentioned on several occasions the "the NFL hates the Rams." On the other hand, I've also heard John Shaw is held in high regard in league circles.
Can you give some background on that?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Again, Goodell did not want St. Louis an expansion team. Tagliabue intervened to get Jacksonville back in the hunt after Wayne Weaver decided to bail. Then the NFL was horrified when the Rams left LA for St. Louis. I haven't see the NFL look at the Rams favorably since. Heck, I had people totally convinced that Super Bowl XXXVI was fixed BEFORE the game was played.
cole hoppmann: I think the cardinals are going to have a nice spring training but they do have some open spots,at 2B/5Th Starter/Cf could they trade for players that are fA's that could play better than the guys that we have going for these
spots.
Jeff Gordon: Out of the pile of 2Bs and CFs, the Cards will find somebody capable. They could sure find better fifth starters than what they have. Could they still make a trade or add a free agent?
At pitcher? Yes. At the other spots, I'd be surprised.
That appears to be it for now. Thanks for all the questions!
