DisCard: Good Afternoon,

Am I reading too much into the reports? It sounds to me like the 2nd base competition is already over.

Thanks,
Jeff Gordon: It sounds like La Russa has already penciled Schumaker into the lead-off spot. But can he play second base? That hasn't been determined. As John Mozeliak notes, the team has six weeks to assess the situation.

I could see Brendan Ryan and Joe Thurston both making the team as back-up infielders -- especially if Mather proves he can play third base.

drelboc: Hey Gordo;

Hey Gordo, have you migrated down to Florida yet? If you have what are you seeing down there that is an intriguing, intrigue? If you have not migrated, when are you going and what is it that intrigues you most that you are going to seek out for yourself?
Jeff Gordon: I'll be there next week. It will be fun to see how things shake down when the games start.

Aside from Schumaker's work at second base, the most interesting things to watch will be:

--Can any of these lefty relievers do the job? Right now, there is no reason to believe the current cast will be sufficient. I'm shocked the Cards haven't added a legit lefty reliever yet.

--Does Mather have the bat to fill in at third? Does Freese have the bat to replace Glaus for a month or more?

--Can Chris Perez gain the needed the command to close? Or must the Cards find a way to bring in, say, Chris Perez?

Brett: Alot of people talk about our OF surplus. I for one don't see it. We have a lot of quality OFers, but not many project as starters. I wonder if this thinking is what has stopped the team from pursuing an impact bat, likely an outfielder? Jon Jay, Shane Robinson, Brian Barton, etc. I think would be good 4th or 5th OFers, but they don't really impress. I do like Darryl Jones. What do you think of all this?
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick's 113 RBIs make him a starter. Rasmus is universally rated as a Top 10 prospect, so he will be a starter. Ankiel's 38 homers and 119 RBI in 672 at bats make him a starter, too. That's three, assuming that Skip stays at second base. Otherwise, the team has four starters plus the supporting cast.

Duncan, Mather, Jay, Barton, Daryl Jones, Robinson . . . that's a pretty good list, and don't forget Wallace as a potential OF. That is why outfield is the absolute last position the Cards should go outside for.

Flotrain: I had a quick thought while reading the article on stltoday.com and everything else about Skip and his move to 2B... To me, it just doesn't make sense that they would wait until right before Spring Training to move him there and to cut Kennedy after the whole deal with him last year, going into this year.. Seriously, TLR is one of the best managers EVER and always puts his team in a position to win, regardless of the talent level. Logic states building your team from C to SS and 2B to CF, or through the very middle of the D. Why would you take such a "risk" taking a gamble on such an important spot?
My feeling now is, this was in the works since the season ENDED. Coming out publicly now instead of October buys Skip some time to adjust. Think about it, with anybody starting something new, who wouldn't want a 5 month head start at a new job or position?... I'm in sales and I would LOVE to be 5 months ahead of when I had to actually make my monthly budgets!!!
I see this as more of a "crazy like a fox" move by the Cardinals...... I agree with your article last week about Skip at 2B makes this lineup even more dangerous because it opens a spot for Duncan or Rasmus, assuming Ankiel and Ludwick both are starters... AND you have to keep Duncan. With Glaus out, who spells Albert at first who has competent defense there?
Jeff Gordon: I see this as a worthy experiment, given Schumaker's offensive potential as a leadoff guy. But the "decision" appears to be the awkward by-product of La Russa's unwillingness to keep Kennedy and DeWitt's payroll scaleback.

IF Skip holds up in the field, all will be well. Even Aaron Miles' exit won't sting as much, since Ryan and/or Thurston could be OK in the utility role. Miles didn't steal bases or produce a lot of runs, although he did hit consistently well.

Taylor: Will you tell Mo to just sign Grudzy already? A great one year option for us if Shu doesn't pan out at 2B.
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak sees no reason to rush. Remember, other teams will be looking to move surplus infielders if the Cards get deep into March and still have questions about Skip's D.

BillP: Hey Jeff, what was you impression of the Nashville game Sat night? I was at the game and I was a little disappointed with their play. I thought we would come out and be more physical - didn't happen. No offensive pressure, most of the shots were harmless perimeter shots, no traffic in front of the goalie whatsoever. What did you think?
Jeff Gordon: Disappointing game, for sure. This was a great chance to step over a Western Conference rival, at least for the moment.

On the plus side, the defensive play has cleaned with Polak back on the mix and Strachan and Wagner back at Peoria.

BillP: Also I think the Blues could use a high caliber stay at home defenseman who's all about being physical and punishing the opposing team. I remember in the last draft, people had us pegged taking Luke Schenn, but I'm still happy we got Petrieangelo. But we need a player of Schenn's ilk. Do you see that void being filled next year?
Jeff Gordon: Ian Cole is supposed to be that guy. He appears to be progressing nicely, but he won't turn pro until the Blues believe he can play in the NHL.

Also, Polak is going to be a rugged Top Four guy for the long haul.

Andrew Sampson: For the Blues, wouldn't it be prudent to:
Split up McDonald & Berglund
Put Backes & Walt on the wings
Winchester on PP unit one when the opposition has a HUGE goalie a la Nashville?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, once Andy is back in stride, then he and Patrik will each anchor a scoring line. I don't mind Backes at center in the short term, but, yes, he should move to the wing -- especially if Tkachuk moves on at a trade.

I like Winchester in front of the net, but he needs to become more consistently tenacious. Lot of potential there, however.

BillP: Hey Jeff, are there any NHL cities in danger of losing their team? If so, is Canada (Winnipeg?) still the popular alternative for relocation? Or what about Kansas City with that new arena? Are they courting anybody? Thanks and Have a good week !
Jeff Gordon: Atlanta could easily lose its teams. Nashville is not solid. The Islanders could exit if a new arena isn't built. Florida isn't solid, despite having its own arena.

KC is a front burner destination, more so than Winnipeg.

OBIE 1975: Gordo-

Any rumors as to a legitimate 2B for the Cards or are we really stuck with either no experience or an experiment in terror (Shu)? Any bench help on the way?

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: If Schumaker can become another Kelly Johnson, then the Cards will be happy. And there are plenty of infielders on the bench.

If the Cards make a move, it will be land a starting 2B if they determine Skip just can't get it done.

BillP: Hey Jeff, one more question. I was just looking to see if there was any info on the breakdown of NHL Rosters in terms on their Nationality breakdown. Wanted to see where the Blues fit in. The best I could do was find a site on nhlnumbers.com The Blues have 3 Europeans on their roster - Steen, Berglund and Polak. Compare it to some of the top teams like the Wings who have 11, and even San Jose and Boston have 7 each. Do you think the Blues organization pays attention to something like this? We should have Junland and Lars Eller next year right? So maybe the Blues are heading in this direction and will infiltrate more Europeans on the Roster? Your take? Thanks!!!
Jeff Gordon: Junland ought to play here a bit next year, yes. The Blues need to get Eller here, too, and get him acclimated. Defenseman Kristoffer Berglund and winger Simon Hjalmarsson will have a shot down the road, too.

But, yes, the Blues need to add offense to their organizational chart. And Europe is a great place to find offense.

vikelt: Can you solve the mystery? Going into the off-season the Cards had 3 second basemen, Lopez, Miles and Kennedy, any one of whom could fit the bill. One week into ST the Cards have none of the above and are trying to teach someone 2d base in 6 weeks! Alternatives appear to be off the table and no trade for an established 2d baseman appears feasible. What is it with the Cards and 2d base? A few years back they could have settled the position by signing Polanco as a free agent and did not do so. What is your take!
Jeff Gordon: The trade option is always there, so the situation is fluid. But, yes, it is weird that the Cards have treated this position as a revolving door, dating well back into the Jocketty Regime.

I scoffed at the notion of Schumaker playing there. Fans raised it last year. And here we are. Weird.

Rich: Good afternoon Gordo,

I realize there is a whole lot of time between now and when the Rams turn their draft card into the commish; however, I get the distinct impression they are less than overwhelmed with the OT prospects at this point.

Do you see either Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe as being worthy of the second overall pick at this stage?

Thanks for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: Monroe is a polished blocker, but his weight room work underwhelmed. Smith is a workout guy, but probably not a second overall pick. The positional depth at tackle might inspire the Rams to fill that need with their second pick, not their first.

MNCardsFan: Gordo, Is the fact that the Cards took a late look at Hudson any indication that "The Idea" at 2B is not going quite as well as hoped? I know that it was supposedly just a "passing interest", but it struck me as somewhat alarming. I hope that Schu can pull it off at 2B to make room for Raz/Dunc in the OF, but I am still skeptical. Have you heard encouraging/discouraging things from Jupiter? Thanks alot.
Jeff Gordon: Skip has a lot to learn. Too soon to rule him in or out. Hudson's sudden willingness to take a one-year deal piqued Mozeliak's curiosity more than his interest.

virginiatom: It seems with free agency right around the corner the Rams have done little, if anything, to clear the room necessary to sign new players, especially after tagging Asogwe and trying to workout a deal with Bartel. Are they behind the curve on this? Who does the actual meeting with the free agents that the Rams are looking to sign to tell them that we want them here?
Jeff Gordon: The coaching staff will do the recruiting.

If the Rams whack both Holt and Pace, that will create lots of cap room. But as I noted last week, don't expect a windfall in free agency. This team has a gazillion needs. Spending a huge chunk on somebody like Colts center Jeff Saturday would prevent the team from upgrading all the other positions.

virginiatom: I like the way the Rams seem to be approaching the draft, which is to get impact players with our first pick and not just attempting to fill needs as we have done in years past with disappointing results (Hill, Carriker, Baron, Thomas, etc). Granted we have so many needs its hard not to fill one with any selection we make, but the Rams do seem to be at least considering game changing players (Crabtree, Maclin, Curry) and not simply a tackle because we need a tackle, even if its a reach. There really does seem to be some football sense in the draft room this year.
Jeff Gordon: But when you pick second overall, it's easier to find an impact player regardless of position. And when you need help at nearly every position, it's easier to take the "best player available."

Justin: Hey, thanks for taking the time to answer questions.
First off it seems as though Holt and Pace are going to be on the way out here soon. With the Cap space savings with both of their releases would it be possible to sign Bartell, Atogwe (tagged), Baltimore's C Jason Brown, and either Gibril Wilson or James Butler at SS or is that goin to be a little over the limit?

Also, given the scenerio above what to you the of the possibility of the Rams drafting Aaron Curry with the first pick. With their second pick picking up WR Kenny Britt of Rutgers or Hakeem Nicks of NC (this would fill the spot left by Torry Holt). We then with the 3rd and 4th picks get offensive tackles. Although, I would like to see Pace get restructured I dont think that will happen, and im not sure throwing a Greco, Scheuning, or a rookie in at the Tackle would be the best option but didnt Denver do it with Clady and he turned out to be the best o-linemen this year.I also would like to think everyone with grow to be better under this new coaching staff rather what they dealt with the last few seasons.

Thanks for the time and sorry about rambling i just feel this is a very realistic Scenerio and was wondering your thoughts on if it seems possible.
Jeff Gordon: Lots of ifs there. Re-signing Bartell has become an if, due to the sudden salary inflation at his position.

Curry going first makes since, since he ranks well above other LBs in the draft and MLB is thin in free agent. Then I would go OT, though, and get one of the higher end guys capable of playing quickly.

newyorkram!: Hi Gordo,

Did Leonard Little have surgery to reattach his torn hamstring? If not, does he plan to?

Thanks,
NYR!
Jeff Gordon: The fact Leonard played with that torn hamstring muscle tells you it wasn't THAT serious. It was serious, but not reattachment serious.

smittywyo: Gordo, the Pokes fans from Wyoming are excited about Dave Christensen, how do you think he will fare as a Head Coach.
Jeff Gordon: He has a great handle on the spread offense. But can he consistently recruit players capable of manning such a system?

dave cobler: Hey Gordo;

As we all know, one of the benefits of Skip Schumaker winning the job at 2nd base is that it clears out a path to the outfield clutter, while giving us our leadoff hitter. What direction do you think the Cards will go if Schumaker does not cut the grade at 2nd base? Is there a package the Cards could put together that would net a 2nd baseman or do you think they will go after a pitcher and award the starting 2nd base job to one of the other guys in camp? I covet your thoughts on this very much and thank you for them!
Jeff Gordon: Ryan could fill the job and hit ninth, where La Russa likes him as a "second lead-off hitter." Brendan would do well enough in that role.

As I noted earlier, trading is always an option. The Cards would have a major OF logjam if Skip goes back there, but the team's lack of a lefty starter, quality lefty reliever and proven closer would seem to be bigger priorities for potential trades.

neil adams: If the man we got from San Diago for Edmonds can play the hot corner , why cant he play second base? Freese
Jeff Gordon: Second base requires a great deal more athletic ranges. Not many natural third basemen can move over. And this team needs Freese to develop at 3B.

Kevin: Jeff,

Why no Beimel or Ohman? If neither of them could we expect a deal for someone like the Pirate's Grabow?

Will the Cards sniff the Juan Cruz sign and trade deal? I hope we don't hear that about a "too late push" on this sort of signing. That makes Mo seem unable to connect on a reasonable deal. He might deserve more credit than that...then again...what gives?

Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: This team would be a lot better off with Cruz in the closer mix and either of your lefties in the bullpen. I agree -- to pass on these opportunities is foolish.

As for the 40-man roster, there are plenty of guys just taking up space there. Cards fans should fret about the bullpen more than they fret about "impact bats" or Skip's defense at 2B.

COGzilla: As of Monday morning what do you think will happen with bartell?
I am praying spags has been on the phone with Gibril Wilson after his crazy release from oakland.Young stud at ss.Has led all safeties in tackles since becoming a starter.
Jeff Gordon: Safety is shaping up as an area where the Rams can definitely upgrade in free agency. Bartell is a tough case, since he could cash in on hyperinflation at this position -- thanks to Oakland's move. That the Rams are Bartell were far apart is bad news. With so many other needs, the team can scarcely afford to lose one of its few above-average performers from a year ago.

adam_cruts: Jeff, thanks as always. Any clue where the Cardinals went wrong with the Juan Cruz deal? Seems like we're always a day late and dollar short (see: Aaron Miles).
Jeff Gordon: The Cruz deal is tricky, since his Type A free agency made his draft pick compensation too high. This created a unique sign-and-trade scenario for the MLB overloads to ponder. Then came the matter of what to pay him. The Cards saw him as insurance, but how much to you pay for insurance. And why would he take an incentives-laden deal here when this team seems headed toward a closer by committee approach.

Jeepster: Jeff: This is not meant to be rude in anyway but does John Mozeliak need some help with his job? He seems to really be in over his head pretty deep and we've now watched just about every decent free agent that he's pursued sign on elsewhere. We're now hearing there were talks for Hudson who was signed for right around 4 million. Can't wait to hear the excuse on this one. Are you now prepared to judge his offseason or should we still hold out hope that he's going to get off his $%& and actually do something?
Jeff Gordon: Did he pursue Hudson? No. He was curious about Hudson's willingness to sign a one-year deal with lots of incentives, but that was it. The one big free agent he made a play on was Fuentes and that guy signed in his native California for less guaranteed money.

As you may have read, Bill DeWitt changed his mind about budgeting a $100 million payroll. IF you're going to get mad in February, get mad at the ownership group.

Leecard: I am sure this question will be asked over and over today, but how is Schumaker looking at 2B? Does it look like it's possible he will be an average major league second baseman?
Jeff Gordon: You can't assess that until the end of spring training. He was a collegiate shortstop, so he can field grounders. He is a good athlete and a hard worker. But turning double plays, THAT is where the challenge will come.

Let's see how he reacts when runners come at him for real.

Leecard: I believe if the current 5 starters are healthy the staff will be strong (even with Piniero). If Schumaker can make it at 2B that solves a couple more problems - second base obviously and it takes off some of the outfield glut, and I like what it does for the lineup offensively. I also think the bullpen has the potential to be greatly improved.

If the starting pitchers are all healthy and Schumaker can make the transition to 2B, what is your prediction for the Cards this season?
Jeff Gordon: I'm not sure the bullpen is improved yet. I'll have to be convinced on the lefties and we need to see where Perez, Motte and Kinney at the end of the spring.

Trusting that Mozeliak will be able to make changes as necessary -- with the team well below $100 million in payroll -- I could see this team getting back to the mid-90s.

But . . . that is predicated on the GM having the opportunity to react quickly if additional injuries strike or if counted-upon players fail.

Spring training is just the starting point.

mitchem11: Hey Gordo,

What do you think the Rams are thinking with Crabtree getting hurt and the Smith kid going AWOL? Are any of the OTs really worth a #2? Heard anything about the Raji kid from BC? It would be nice to get a difference maker with the #2. I'm not sure any of the offensive lineman are that, no Orlando Pace in the bunch.
Jeff Gordon: As I wrote about elsewhere on the site -- and as Jim Thomas wrote about as well -- Curry could be a different maker at MLB, allowing Witherspoon to move outside.

It'll be fun to see if Andre Smith wins back the scouts at his pro day next month.

Cards4520: Are there any rumblings of a possible trade w/ the oufielders? Or are we just waiting to see if one of them will up their trade value through spring training or all the way up to the deadline?
Jeff Gordon: The OF issues is tied to third base, where Mather is trying to fill in, and second base, where Schumaker hopes to start. If those guys make the defensive transition, the need to move an outfielder decreases.

Also, can Duncan hit bombs again now that his neck is healthy?

And where, exactly, is Colby Rasmus in his development?

It's too early to move a player, particularly a potential offensive beast like Ankiel.

signed s. j.: Hey Gordo-- Thoughts on OJ & Bartell.

1.OJ is like a basketball player you scream at the TV set what a bad shot only to have it go in.I find myself yell & screaming at OJ when the offensive player has the ball & getting extra yards & then he strips the ball. His numbers & price to franchise makes the best sense. Can he still be traded though?

2.Ron Bartell has been better every year.Ram fans could see he was going to be a good one & is one of the better draft picks the team has had.Why in the world do you not sign him to an extended contract before he was a free agent? It would have cost nickles instead of silver dollars.Makes me real mad that the front office can not judge even there own players.

Did Billy have any say in these matters ? Lets hope he does not over spend on a questionable free agent again.
Jeff Gordon: I agree that it would have been nice to extend Bartell, but the franchise management was in flux during the season. Only recently did all the pieces come together.

Bartell is a nice player, but there is also risk in overpaying. One reason this team got so bad was contract extensions to key players. Almost without exception, those players got hurt or got worse -- creating a huge mess.

Atogwe has flaws, for sure. He takes weird angles to the ball. But he fills a spot pretty well. The Rams have so many holes to fill -- why create one more?

BrandonRAMS: Hi Gordo,
Quick Question, Any super standouts at the football scouting combine? How did the MIZZOU players do?
Jeff Gordon: At the combine, tackle Jason Smith turned a lot of heads with his workout. He definitely moved up the list and furthered deepened the draft at that position.

Maclin was doing fine until he suffered a leg injury. He wasn't as fast as he hoped, however.

Daniel helped himself by improving his drop-back footwork, shedding some pounds and checking in at a legit 6 feet tall.

Lot of teams drooling over Ziggy Hood. Might he fill the new tap in Tennessee's line?

Brian: Don't get me wrong because I love the kid, but my prediction is that Jeremy Maclin's career will be plagued by injuries. The guys in the NFL are much tougher and stronger than the competition he faced in college. And in college whenever he received a hard hit, he would be slow to get up.

What are your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I'd hate to write the kid off. And I do like the fact he seems able to play with minor injuries and still produce. As you say, the NFL certainly IS a grind.

Brian: Any idea on who will take over the Mizzou Defense and what are your thoughts on the D-Coordinator jumping ship so late?
Jeff Gordon: Pinkel nearly lost him to the Toledo opening, so he had time to ponder his options. Dave Steckel could be the internal replacement, with Barry Odom joining the staff as safeties coach.

Tackleberry: Do you see there being "fall out" from this Piniero/WBC situation that lingers beyond spring training? The fact is, that he did not pitch anywhere near his contract last year and he often reminds me of Jason Marquis in terms of his lack of implementation of Duncan's game plan and his results. Until he shows anything further, to me he looks like a good expiring contract to shop at the trade deadline.
Jeff Gordon: Perhaps. This is a big contract year for Joel, who must show a lot more. Otherwise, he'll back in the pile of guys looking for invites to camp with a minor league deal. The Cards liked his early conditioning and early arm strength, but, as you say, executing the plan was the hard part for him last year. He kept getting lost, even when he had a lead to work with.

Brian: Do you really think the rams will let both Pace and Holt go? If I was the GM you keep Pace and let Holt walk. Either from Saunders game plan or Bulger's reads, Holt obviously wasn't a big part of the plan this past year.
Jeff Gordon: If I were to keep one, I would keep Pace. If you let O.P. go, you better be able to land a strong FA offensive tackle and a strong OT in the draft as well. Moving Barron from the right side to the left won't cure all his problems.

RealityCheck: Hello Jeff,

I was wondering if you have any projected salary info for what appears to be the 25 man roster this year. Team DeWallet promised a 100 million dollar roster going into this season and I thought I saw Bernie or someone say its going to be closer to 77 million, but that was a month or so ago. 23 Million could have bought a second baseman, a closer and an extra lefty reliever without having to trade anyone. Thanks for your time.

RealityCheck
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, an $80 million payroll looks quite possible. Here are the veterans signed:

Albert $16 million
Carpenter $14 million
Glaus $11.25 million
Pineiro $7.5 million
Lohse $7.125 million
Greene $6.5 million
Wellemeyer $4.05 million
Kennedy $4 million
Ludwick $3.7 million
Molina $3.25 million
Ankiel $2.825 million
Wainwright $2.6 million
Franklin $2.5 million
La Rue $950,000
Duncan $825,000
Thompson $650,000
Miller $500,000
Ring $475,000

Lots of room to spend, even if the budget is now $90 million.

Wiffleball: Do you get the sense that the Cardinals are complete as we see them in Spring Training or is there a sense of a move/trade impending? If so, what area do you think will be addressed with such a move?
Jeff Gordon: The team won't be a finished product until September. LH relief pitching, late-inning relief pitching and LH starting pitching are the biggest holes.

SCOTT RHEIN: Hello Jeff, and Thank You for taking my question. With the trade deadline comming up soon. I see the Blues being sellers. Not that they have not tried. I just think it will be too tough for them to make it. That being said, other than Tkachuk, who else do you see going? Also, after watching Pittsburgh and Washington play yesterday. It looked like Pittsburgh could use a beter goalie. Is there any chance Manny could land on another team to help in the playoffs? Thank you for your time.
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Buffalo needs to look at Manny hard, since Ryan Miller is out for a whole and the Sabres' AHL goalie was struggling this year.

Tkachuk could be a fit many places, including Boston and NY. Look for moves.

SCOTT RHEIN: Hello Jeff, I have anothe question for you. With the Blues starting to get healthy again. Is there any chance that they would trade a defensemen like, Wagner, Weaver, or Woywitka. I know they have been great back ups this year. I just do not see them in the line up next year. I think it would be great for them to get on another team and have a chance at the playoffs. Look at Wideman. He is doing great in Boston. Nobody thought he would do that well. I think Brad Boyes is the better player but still. He got a chance.
Thank You
Scott
Jeff Gordon: None of the guys you mentioned have trade value. They are just fill-ins.

gnykin2: What do you think about all of the "Mo" bashers... other then the fact that we now have two of the top five dumbest nicknames in professional sports (Mo and Spags), I think he has done a good job with a very limited payroll. I feel like the lack of activity was MUCH more a result of Dewitt's... lets say "fiscal responsibility." Do you agree?

Also, while I am disapointed with this offseason, I gotta be honest, I am pumped for this season. So much will play out in March and April with almost everything up for grabs.
Jeff Gordon: What will make or break the Cards is player development. If these young guys can play, the Cards will be fine. They will have money to spend and players to move. If the kids tank, there will be too many holes to fill.

Alan Lopez: Gordo

Who will be the Blue's goalie in 2011? Go!

-Alan
Jeff Gordon: I'd still bet on Ben Bishop for 2011. He needs work, but he is a physical freak.

gmdarby: Hello Mr. Gordon,

With David Freese battling a sore Achilles tendon, does that help Brett Wallace's chances of making the opening day roster? Who do you like better at this point starting at third base in Glaus' absence? Does either of them have a good chance at staying on the 25 man roster even when Glaus returns from rehab?
thank you
Jeff Gordon: Freese's injury is minor, so it is no real setback. I'd say he and Mather are front-runners. Wallace needs to keep hitting in the minors. If Freese is the guy, he would likely go back to get ABs once Glaus returns. He is just one year removed from A ball.

Chocolate Thunder: GORDO,
I took my son to the SLU game Saturday night. Overall a very good basketball experience. Reed and Mitchell looked very good for being youngsters. The offense opens up a bit when Reed is in there because you actually have a big man in there instead of 6-4 to 6-6 guys running around setting screens and trying to get free.
Tommy and Kevin of course looked strong. Kyle Cassidy looked shaky in his few minutes on the floor.
The only thing I would question is the lighting, why do they use spot lights on the side during the games?
The lighting also changes when the advertising ring changes around the arena. It's very annoying, why can't they just keep the lights on the whole game?
Not really a SLU fan but it's nice to finally have a nice place to see some D-1 college ball that's close to home.
SLU is heading in the right direction.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the lighting change IS weird and notable. I'm guessing that SLU gets used to it, but opponents must notice it.

billyh072883: With Albert's contract coming up for negotiations next year what can we expect to happen? Should St. Louis fans be worried about a Yankee or Boston coming along and offering him a outrageous contract and stealing him away. There is no way St. Louis can compete with the offers that those juggernauts. Will Albert retire as a Cardinal in your mind? Thanks and keep up the good work.
Jeff Gordon: You should be worried. That is a lot of money, $25 million. On the other hand, if the economy has healed, the Cardinals will easily be able to afford Albert by cycling in young players around him.

Bluff Boy: You the Man Gordo!

Thanks for taking my question. This is how I think and some of the other guys in our Season Ticket Group. We are not going to Busch do to the front office note spending any money, not the economey. I know some will not go as much but there are a bunch of us who are upset with the front office and do not wan't go due to them. We bought our season tickets due to the all-star game so they still have our money. I still think we need help with our pitching depth with or with out Carp. Our bull pen still scares me a bit. When are we getting rid of one of these outfilders we have some great depth there. We need to flip that for some pitching. Get DeWitt going Jeff.
Jeff Gordon: Lower attendance can become a self-fulfilling prophesy IF the Cards allow holes to go unfilled and the team to struggle this year.

Armen Dacity: Gordo,

Have you noticed the Rams showing interest at the Combine in either of the two Boston College DTs, B.J. Raji or Ron Brace? I think either would be a good fit, though Raji would have to be taken in the first round, while Brace could be there in Round 2.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams like a lot of guys, but I'm not sure about a DT going that high -- especially if Holt and Pace both depart. Also, MLB looks thin in free agency, so they may draft there.

Mike: I see that the Washington Nationals have released Odalis Perez. What are the chances pick him up at a relatively cheap price and throw him in the mix of starters? He could be a good insurance policy who is lefthanded and throws lots of innings.
Jeff Gordon: Weird deal with Perez. He didn't show up to work in some sort of dispute with the team. He is working looking at, but not worth guaranteeing a lot of money.

Dan the Man: Mr Gordon,

Be realistic now, what are the odds of our current lefties being able to retire say an Adam Dunn type hitter with two outs in the Seventh inning of a tie ballgame with runners on? My thought is 50-50. We might have a better shot with one of our talented righties!! (Kyle M.??) Enlighten us all with your thoughts. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: I am not excited about that prospect. I can't believe the team hasn't upgraded that position, with good pitchers still unsigned.

Ed C: Gordo,

Good point about the shifting favorites for the Rams #2 pick and so it always goes. I'm guilty, I originally favored Bradford but when he didn't come out...now I would say hang on to Pace and go defense defense, defense with first 2 picks. Don't know who the picks should be but I vote for defense. One question, what about Pat White in the 3rd round (if he makes it that far)? He seems to be an ideal fit for a developmental guy in the West Coast offense. Montana, the best ever, wasn't a big guy and didn't have the greatest arm. I'm not comparing their talent just size and arm. If that doesn't work out he can be moved WR.
Jeff Gordon: White apparently ran a 4.5 in the 40, which makes him a candidate to go into a Brad Smith third WR/third QB role.

nicksmynick: Why would the Cardinals let Rasmus make the roster out of spring training instead of keeping him AAA for at least 6 weeks as to control his contract for an extra season? If LaRussa sees Duncan as the typical #2 hitter, and is going to play him in LF if healthy, how can there actually be room for Rasmus if he makes the club Ludwick has to move to LF and Ankiel to RF. Wouldnt it make more sense to bring him up next season when one leave via free agency, or is an outfielder trade in the works? I cant see Duncan getting any playing time with Ludwick in LF. Thoughts on this situation?
Jeff Gordon: If Rasmus kills the ball this spring and still goes down to Memphis to delay the start of his contract, then that sends a terrible message to all the young players. The Cards can't afford to play that game.

There is still lots of time to sort all this out.

kingoftruth: Hey Jeff,

Aside from Richardson, this group of Mizzou recruits seems to be average at best (on paper).
Doesn't it seem like Mizzou should have landed more 3 & 4 star rated recruits given the recent success of the team?
Or was Pinkel looking to bring some guys in who can be "coached up"?
Jeff Gordon: Recruiting experts put this class on par with earlier Mizzou classes. Getting to that four- and five-star level is a chore for a program like this. OU and Texas are in a different world. If Mizzou can start drawing 90,000 a game, maybe it can get there, too.

Griff21: Glaus is gone for at least a month of the season and now I saw Freese has an achilles injury, whats his outlook?>
Jeff Gordon: Not a serious injury at this point.

Tom: Two teams but same question: Blues and Cards, who is most likely to be traded and when? Do you think the Cards will go into the season stocked with outfielders? Likewise, do you think the Blues will wait until the trade deadline to deal their valuables, or get started early?
Jeff Gordon: Trades could happen at any time for the Blues. If another team wants to pay the price, the GM should call JD.

I see the Cards waiting this out to see how the pieces fall. Too soon to make a call.

Obes10: If the rams were going to take a ledft tackle at number 2, which guy would you draft?
Jeff Gordon: Too soon to say. Let's see what Andre Smith weighs at his workout and how he looks in pass blocking drills. Eugene Monroe is more polished, but he must get stronger.

smmiller00: Jeff, Is Mo really serious about saying that he is open to making a deal within the next 6 weeks if there is a need. Sometimes this guys statements are so stupid that you have to ask if he is serious.

If he still is looking to see if we have a need, then this guy is freaking blind. I think the only way for this ownership to show a little love to Cardinal Nation is to hit them where it hurts, in the pocketbook. We need to stay away from Busch this year and drive our point home, your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: If the team loses games, stay home. If cost-cutting leads to a mediocre, then DeWitt's vision of lower attendance will sure come true.

If the team wins, come to the games. That simple. Writing off the team in February is silly. Mozeliak has always made deals to fill holes.

Joe Stafford: Hello Jeff, Any chance the Rams do draft Aaron Curry with the #2 pick? I do think that linebackers have not been a priority in the draft in the last few years. Yes,Curry is a possibility.
Jeff Gordon: But now there is a new management team and coaching staff in St. Louis.

Chris: Can you tell me why the Cards or other clubs have expressed no interest in former ATL brave Chuck James. He is a lefty, and used to be pretty good. Seems like this would be right up the Cards alley.
Jeff Gordon: They have lefties who are projects. They need lefties who are a sure bet to succeed.

Mark in NY: Gordo, what is the deal with Orlando Pace? Can he still play at a high level? Does he want to finish his career with the Rams? I know that is code for "big pay cut", but I hope the Rams make him a fair offer in return.

If they lock him up, they can focus on defense first and draft BJ Raji the tackle, or Curry the linebacker. Either player would give our defense a huge boost at stopping the run and, if you remember, teams ran all over the Rams last year. It was ugly!
Jeff Gordon: Curry fills the bigger need on D. As for Pace, his injury history and age make him a tough guy to keep if he won't restructure his deal. 5-27! That forces a lot of change.

Joe Stafford: Hello Jeff, if the Rams go o-line with the #2, which one would be a better fit at left tackle, Jason Smith, or Eugene Monroe?
Jeff Gordon: Monroe is polished, but he must get stronger. Smith was a workout warrior, but he is still a little raw.

jwl6f8: I am excited to see what the Cardinals lineup and bullpen can do this year...Two young guys battling it out at closer, schumaker making the transition to 2nd and potentially leading off for a powerful lineup, ankiel continuing his career transition, and of course watching the greatest hitter in the game right now. My reservation with this team and in previous years is our lack of starting pitching. Now that edmonds, mulder, encarnacion, and others are off the payroll, the projected numbers for payroll in 2009 are actually lower than in '08. With our current pitching staff's track record of either injuries or lack of experience, I have to question why Mozeliak doesn't buy an innings eater starter with a proven record of success and reputation. As opening day nears, asking salaries for any unsigned pitcher, I imagine, lower as well. Plus, you have an uneasy Pineiro. Do you see the Cardinals acquiring any such pitcher prior to the beginning of the season?
Jeff Gordon: The payroll is looking a LOT lower for this year, perhaps $20 million lower. Not much pitching is left now, however, so the big change would have to come in a trade.

McClellan is a solid No. 6 pitcher. Boggs is No. 7, IF healthy.

Joe Stafford: Hello Jeff, Any news on the Ron Bartell contract? The Radiers cb who got the crazy 45 million over 3 year contract just might have priced Bartell out of the Rams Lineup next year.
Jeff Gordon: No kidding. That was sick money.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, I know I'm beating this to death, But will Steve Spaguolo please CUT Drew Bennett already! I understand the cap hit, but he hasn't done anything to deserve one more dime from the Rams.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, there is no cap savings. But there are saving savings. Maybe the staff hates to eat $5 million right away.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, Does it look like that both Pace and Holt are now goners? It's too bad but if they are headed out the door, I wish the Rams would just get it over with and be ready for the 27th for free agency.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, if they're gone, let 'em know so they can get ready for the next move.

k.meadows: If Colby Rasmus does not start on opening day, who do you think would bat in the first 2 spots of the order ahead of Pujols then?
Jeff Gordon: Duncan would likely be the guy, if Colby doesn't make the team.

Griff21: I've never seen Pj Walters but always hear good things about him. his array of pitches sounds like hes ready for the bigs. whats your take on him? whats his chances of making the team?
Jeff Gordon: He doesn't have a fastball, which is the stumbling block. If he can't set up big league hitters, it's tough to win up here.

chattylicker: is jeff saturday on the rams radar?
Jeff Gordon: That's a big, big ticket. A HUGE ticket. Getting a leader in the middle of the line would be huge, but there are so many needs. It's an interesting thought, but . . .

RealityCheck: Do you think there is any chance the Rams trade down and draft Maclin and address the OL need through FA? Also, any chance the Rams going after Chris McAllister of the Ravens who was cut? Thanks,
Jeff Gordon: The Rams could trade down and take an OT later. Free agency is an option and the Rams may have to do that, too, if Pace leaves. McAllister is interesting, but where is he really at and what does he want, money-wise?

justin: So we all know TLR signed his 2 year contract last season. We know that he only did it under the impression that the team was willing to do whatever was needed to make another run the a championship before he contract expires. Because of the lack of adding strength this off season and only slight improvements in the prior off season, will TLR be our skipper next season? If not, is John Mo to blame?
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak doesn't set the budget. That would be the issue. If the Cards are needlessly thifty this year -- and that costs the team -- then TLR won't be excited.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, can you tell me which restricted free agents the Rams will tender an offer to, if any? And if already done, what level did they get?
Jeff Gordon: Nobody in the group merits the highest compensation. Setterstrom is coming back from a major injury and Incognito has emotional issues. Adeyanju I would keep, but he is a utility guy. He lacks the pass rushing skills to get big money.

illside43: If Skip starts the year at second, do you think they will start a right handed hitter like Ryan against Lefties?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, that is a possibility.

illside43: It seems Duncan will get the nod in the OF and the 2 spot in the lineup. Could Mather and him be platooning or do you think Rasmus as an everyday player is more likely.
Jeff Gordon: That hasn't been decided now. Duncan could share with Mather . . . unless Rasmus forces his way in. And even if Rasmus starts in Memphis, he is not likely to be down there long.

illside43: Could Molina be a possibility as a #2 hitter since he is a .300 hitter who does not strike out, or will his lack of speed and power prevent him from hitting there?
Jeff Gordon: Can't put a guy that slow in front of Albert. You would hate to see him stop at third on every one of Albert's doubles.

Ryan: Gordo,

Could you explain why (if) you think Pineiro is a better option as our #5 start than McClellan? It's hard to buy the "we need him in the pen" argument, since he's been preparing as a starter. Seems to me his up-side is far beyond Pineiro, and his likely contribution would be 12-15 wins with a healthy offense. If it's a matter of being sort of stuck with Joel, I think that kind of belies Tony's overall m.o.

Gracias.
Jeff Gordon: Pineiro's work in the rotation two years back showed his potential. McClellan is a top prospect, but first things first. Let's see what he does with the spot starts likely to come his way.

illside43: I have not heard much about Kahlil Greene, how is he swinging the bat so far in Spring Training?
Jeff Gordon: He seems to have a better mental outlook with his new scene, but we'll see. I'm looking forward to getting down there next week.

Slim: Even if Schumaker can handle 2B defensively (a big if), the Cards have a serious glut of lefthanded outfield bats. Ludwick is an everyday starter, as is Ankiel, and Rasmus and Duncan have great cases for starting against righthanded pitching. Add Schumaker into that mix and it's nearly impossible to get playing time for very good hitters. We kept hearing all offseason that Mo was going to use this depth to deal for team needs. Did he make a mistake in not using one of those assets to get a more established closer, starting pitching depth, or a second baseman? Or was he wise not to make a move as of yet and keep those assets for a future deal when team needs become more apparent (whether Carp can stay healthy, whether Schumaker can play 2B, whether a closer can emerge from within, etc.)
Jeff Gordon: At some point, somebody will get traded. The team has other OFs on the climb, besides the glut you mention. At that time, we'll be able to assess where Mo made the most of that surplus.

jimbyrd: The Cards have assembled quite a few young starting pitchers ticketed for Memphis to start the season. Are any of these guys possible for San Diego in the Greene trade? What is the date that player has to be named?
Jeff Gordon: San Diego still gets to pick a player this spring. We'll know soon enough.

schronote: Lars Eller's current team Frolunda has only 3 or 4 more regular season games left. Since Lars contract with them ends this year, could he choose to come finish the season with either Peoria or skating with the Blues after his team is completely done? I know he signed some contract last summer with the Blues, would the leagues allow him to do this, would there be a way to have him play of course while avoiding any losses in years on his contract with us. Just curious how the NHL and teams handle European prospects whos teams finish early and the players themselves have intentions to play in N.A. I don't know what everyone else thinks but I think it would be great for Lars to spend this time of the year in either STL or Peoria to experience the media hype and craziness of playoffs, trade deadlines, and get a sneak peak for what its going to take this summer to make the big show out of the gates...
Jeff Gordon: I believe guys like Lars have to wait until the summer to come over. The Blues need to get him to North America so he can start adapting to this world.

billyh072883: What is your prediction for what will happen to Brian Barton. From what I saw last year he had better defense than Duncan and better speed. I know he fell into a slump with the bat but didnt all that bad. Do you feel that Duncan is a liability in the outfield? He never has really been comfortable out there and has had, what looks like a hard time judging the balls. Thoughts? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Barton offers a right-handed bat, but he lacks base-stealing ability and power. And his throwing arm is terrible. So it will be hard for him to land a gig here until the outfielder clears out. He could be a good No. 4 or No. 5 outfielder.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

When will the Rams be announcing there cap casualty cuts or was Chavous the only one?

Also, what's your feel for resigning Bartell?

Thanks,
Jeff Gordon: Many more cuts to come. As for Bartell, I'd re-sign him -- but not for Pro Bowl money.

Roger Schutt: 1) Colby Rasmus’ Knee?? We lost him at AAA for a couple of months last season, when his KNEE buckled on him at home plate.
It’s my understanding he wasn’t even swinging (a check-swing did it??). So how’s that knee holding up now? Could it “give out” again at any time?
2) Cardinal Lefty Relievers. How ‘bout an update on each of the three (?) lefties trying to join T. Miller in the bullpen! Please include their major & minor league stats, if you will… please!
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus is healthy after an off-season of weight work. That was probably a better way to spend his time than Winter Ball.

The lefties appear to be underwhelming, but let's see what happens when the games start.

hugeCardfan: Gordo,

I don't know if you're down at Jupiter or not. If you are, talk a little about Hawkesworth and Ottavino. Both guys struggled last year, but it sounds like they've looked pretty good this spring. Any chance they're turning a corner here, or is this just, pitchers ahead of hitters time?
Jeff Gordon: I'll be there next week. Derrick wrote encouraging things about Ottavino, who quit screwing around with his mechanics over the winter and got physically stronger. Sounds like he is back on track. Playing in the WBC will give him a head start. Blake could have been another WBC guy. It's make-or-break time for him after a terrible '08 season. Other prospects, like Kyle McClellan and Jess Todd, flew past him.

ueaces: Hi gordo.
Thanks for the great job you do on the chats.

One question...yes or no. Do you take the Schumaker "experiment" seriously? Personally, I just can't.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards are taking it seriously, so we must take it seriously as well.

Bruce Weber: Do you think you could gather up 5 guys from your neighborhood and score 33 points against Penn State?
Jeff Gordon: Against Penn State? Probably not my neighborhood.

billyh072883: Another one for you, Why did the Cards opt not to sign Aaron Miles, for the money he got with the (s)c(r)ubs one would think the Cards could have and should have signed him. Wasnt TLR a big fan of A.M.? Is there something more to the story that I am missing?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the Cards should have just eaten Adam's contract at the end of last season, then signed Aaron. That would have made perfect sense.

kevin reed: Mr.Gordon,
Recently Albert stated money really wasn't an issue, it was about winning. On MLB network they spoke as if he ( Albert) was drawing a line in the sand, as if the Cardinals were not trying to win and he was willing to walk at the end of his contract. Do you see any possible way this could happen and he does'nt sign a long term deal?
Jeff Gordon: Sure it could happen. If this team isn't contending, then there is no reason to finish a career here.

bobbyballgame: Mr Gordon,

A question about the Cardinals outfield if you would. I've been putting some combinations together and seeing how everyone fit lately, and I wanted your thoughts. It seems it's a foregone conclusion for many that Barton will be in AAA. The only way that I can see that happening is if Rasmus earns a starting job, and Duncan is a reserve. I don't see any way they would bring Colby north and have him sit on the bench.

So, to my question. Who are the five outfielders you see breaking camp, and who starts.

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: I would start Ludwick, Rasmus, Ankiel and have Duncan on the bench. I would keep Mather, too, but start him at 3B for the first month. Schumaker would start at 2B. I would keep Ryan and Thurston on the bench to cover the infield. In that scenario, there might be room for one more INF or OF until Glaus returns.

eternalramnation: Jeff,

Thank you for your answer. I don't know if you know the names that will be on the cap casualty list, or would want to share them even if you do, but will there be any names on it where'd a Rams fan would say "wow didn't see that one coming"?

Also any idea on who the Rams plan to tender before Friday?
Jeff Gordon: If both Holt and Pace go, that would probably surprise some.

RealityCheck: Thanks for answering my earlier question about the new 80 million salary Team DeWallet is going in with, since they are taking a 20% savings in team payroll, does that mean they are going to pass that savings on to the consumer and lower concessions and ticket prices 20%? Didnt think so. I guess I will be putting my name in the company fish bowl for baseball tickets this year and spending my concession money at local restaurants instead. I really just hate the lies that they say, if they plan on cutting payroll be open and honest about it and dont say that they are saving money to spend at the trade deadline and then dont make trades to save money for free agency and on and on and on.
Jeff Gordon: Again, if the team isn't good, don't come. That is fair enough. If the kids win, then I can't see why you would boycott the games over the payroll.

billyh072883: What is the status of Juan Encarnacion?
Jeff Gordon: He's done.

Cadynce1: Why wouldnt the Cardinals go with someone like Mark Grudzelianek as a possible emergency 2nd baseman If Skip doesnt work out?Thans a Bunch, JRB
Jeff Gordon: If Skip falls apart, that could still be an option.

chicagoblues: Gordo..the other day JD was saying in an interview that it's about time to start using some of our assets to pick up a player via trade (most likely a winger who can score).

Do you think JD would package Perron in any trade to obtain a top winger? If you look at all the talent that's in the pipeline, it's obvious someone has to go. Both Pulushaj and Eller are expected to compete for a roster spot next year and I know the front office is really high on this Pulushaj kid. He could take Perron's spot and we could probably fetch a pretty good forward for him. He seems to always be on the outs with Murray and I know he's young, but he continues to be in the doghouse.

Anyway, thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Perron has a huge upside, so that wouldn't be an asset to move. Overall, though, I agree with that assessment. This team needs another late-20s type offensive player.

jimbyrd: Once Glaus returns, I expect Freese to be sent to Memphis to play every day. Wallace may be there at 3rd. What plans do the Cards have long term?? Wallace to the outfield? Freese somewhere else??
Jeff Gordon: Freese plays third at Memphis. I see Wallace at third at Springfield, then perhaps the outfield or first at Memphis as he progresses.

Can Wallace play 3B well enough in the big leagues? Not sure. But he can hit well enough to play here at some point this year.

jtynes: Jeff,

Not really a question, more of an opinion. I have certainly never played at the major league level, but its fairly evident that of all the positions, second base is not the most difficult. We need someone to make the routine plays and turn the double-play with relative ease. It's not beyond the realm of possibility that a professional athlete, who did play infield until he was drafted, can accomplish playing average to above-average defense at the position. He has good reactions and a strong arm. The coaches position these guys very well. He'll be fine.
Jeff Gordon: As long as Skip can make the double play turn, he'll be OK.

Bleacher Fan at Center: Mr G,

If both Rasmus and Ankiel are starters, which one starts at center? Ankiel seems more fitting for the corners but he has more experience at center than Rasmus. Would Rasmus be ready for a starting gig at center?

Thanks a bunch!
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus will be the better center fielder. Ankiel has wheels and the arm, but he is raw.

PujoDawgz: Do you think Kinney will be a factor this year?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, and that is very important. He has the big-game experience to help in the late innings. And he has the strikeout pitch to get it done.

billyh072883: As a season ticket holder to the Cards and Rams I was hoping you could shed some light on what the time table is for Ballpark Village. Originally it was going to be done by the All Star game and now we will have tents and vendors out there. Any new news on this project? Also what kind of remodeling is going on the The Dome?

Thanks again, your doing a great job.
Jeff Gordon: The dome stuff is mostly cosmetic -- lighting, paint scheme, video boards, that sort of thing.

In this economy, don't expect Ballpark Village to go up any time soon. If you built it now, business will not come.

eternalramnation: Jeff, thanks again, last question for this week.

Any idea which RFA's the Rams plan on making a tender offer to before Friday?
Jeff Gordon: Incognito is the interesting call. Victor Adeyanju is a no-brainer, but Setterstrom is coming back from a tough injury. We'll see.

Blues Fan: Hey Gordo:

Hope all is well in the Lou. Assuming KT is not retained by the Blues, what top 6 FW FA would you like to see the Blues go after?
Jeff Gordon: If Jordan Staal had hit the free agent marketplace, that would have been my guy. As it is, I don't know if there is a pending free agent that I'm in love with.

Perhaps the team can add a mid-level veteran that becomes a cap casualty elsewhere.

Cadynce1: What is your opinion on the pitcher batting eighth? If this is so successful why isnt anybody else in the Majors doing It? Thanks Again, JRB
Jeff Gordon: I love TLR, but I don't get this at all.

PujoDawgz: Anthony Reyes had a 1.83 ERA for the Indians in 6 starts last year. Is he going to start this year and what do you think of his potential.
Jeff Gordon: I think I could become a Pineiro-type or better. Here, he just wore out the staff with his injuries and inconsistency.

That appears to be it for this week. Thanks for all the questions. Next week I'll be live from Jupiter. Florida, that is.
