ctramsfan: Jeff, I was under the impression that the rams are about 6 million dollars over the cap. Will this hurt their chances to land potential big name free agents such as Bernard Berrian and Gibril Wilson or even mid level free agents such as Jacob Bell and Bryant Johnson, and what are they going to do to solve this problem? Also, which players do you see the rams making serious runs at in free agency? Thanks for your time.
Jeff Gordon: They are $7 million under the cap, but the Rams need to restructure Little's contract and either restructure Bruce's deal or release him to create even more room. As Jim Thomas noted, the club would like to lock in Atogwe and Jackson to longer-term deals.

As for free agents, the Rams certainly need a speed receiver. But their commitment to Bennett might preclude a big investment there.

As we noted last week, some of the more attractive free agents would come off the board. FS Hamlin and DT Corey Williams were among those stuck with the franchise tag.

drelboc: HEY GORDO;
Who in camp do you think has the best chance of being the every day starting RF? If it is a platoon situation who would you like to see out there?

As Jack Buck use to say oh so many years ago..."thanks for your time-for this time-til next time....SO LONG".
Jeff Gordon: I would park Ankiel in RF and leave him there for 500 ABs, unless he fell apart. In CF, I'd use Schumaker and Ludwick until Rasmus is ready. Colby is the future CF, so leave the spot open while seeing if Schumaker has more than you thought. Barton has a poor arm, which is why he mostly played LF in the minors. But it would be interesting to see what he could add offensively.

If Gonzalez stays healthy, send him to Memphis to see what happens. In my mind, he would have to kill the ball to take a spot from one of the younger players.

J. Murphy: I have been a Ram fan since 1949. You would think at 71 years of age I'd know better but here I am upset as hell about the miserable shape my team is in. There can be no excuse for the financial condition they are in as far as the cap is concerned. Not since Rosenbloom has the Rams had a hands on owner or anyone in top management that knows football. They got to the Superbowl in 79 from what Rosenbloom had done before and they just got lucky to get Vermeil who put them in the last one. What top management should do, if they want a winner and so bit of respect, hire Vermeil back and get rid of JZ and Shaw.Give him a free hand and let he build a dynasty. This draft is a no brainer 1st defense, pass rush in particular. The QB can't hurt you on his back. Chris Long may be gone but Gholston is more than capable. next look for a top ol.The Rams have a chance to recover if they know what their doing with 4 picks in the first 97. Having said that JZ may have something to do with draft and that would be a disaster.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are not in terrible cap shape. They have some older guys eating up some space -- and that has to change. Zygmunt has been able to work restructures in the past. If Little won't play ball, I'd cut him as part of the youth movement, switch to a 3-4, move Carriker to DE and take a long look at Dorsey.

tom: Is Tony LaRussa incapable of handling the press? Is it as Slaten as said in his latest argument with Tony, the press only lobs softballs at him? Are we seeing a personality change, from the time he started in St. Louis, in Tony LaRussa?

Lastly, does the management really care about these arguments that have become more common from TLR? Will they ever say that is enough and so "shut up" to Tony?
Jeff Gordon: La Russa deals with the media daily. He takes hard questions and easy questions. He's not hard to find. During the season, he is available in his office for long stretches before and after every game. He is easy to talk to at spring training as well.

concerned blues fan: Why do the blues announcers on tv keep talking about how great our defense is? The way I see it, they always look out of position, make poor clearing passes, and are getting drilled into the endboards. It is quite obvious if Manny wasn't back there we would be hanging out with the Kings in the standings.
Jeff Gordon: There is a lot of potential on defense, true, but some overhaul is needed. Veterans like McKee, Jackman and Backman can certainly do better -- especially since they are being paid as Top Four defenders.

John Sims: Don't you think it was foolish for the Cards not to bring back Edmonds and Eckstein for one last hurrah? Given the fact that they had no ready replacements, especially young ready replacements, and that both Brendan Ryan and Colby Rasmus could have benefited greatly from a full year in triple-A, this just seems like going cheap for the sake of going cheap. However, I think the Cards would have had a real shot at winning the Central this year, without really hurting their "youth movement" at all. Why go young this year, when you had a legitimate chance to win this year with those two?
Jeff Gordon: La Russa might agree with you, but at some point this team has to get younger. Had Edmonds returned, got hurt and been displaced by Rasmus, that would have been tough on him. He got to return to SoCal and start for a contender. I agree that Eckstein would have been good for one more year, especially since La Russa needs more convincing about Ryan. Izturis will be OK defensively, but he won't help much at the plate hitting ninth behind the pitcher.

ctramsfan: Jeff, if the Dolphins go with Chris Long with the number one overall pick, who do you see the Rams taking, (possibly Jake Long, Vernon Gholston?). Also, I have heard rumors about a possible trade: Jonathan Vilma and the number 6 pick to the Rams for the Number 2 pick. What can you tell me about this rumor?
Thanks for your time.
Jeff Gordon: The Jets are letting him shop for a new team. He could be a nice fit here, especially if the team goes to the 3-4. So the forums are on fire with the rumor you mention. It would make sense, since the Rams would have no trouble filling a need after moving down in the first round.

ctramsfan: Jeff, what positions are the Rams going to try to target in free agency? Also, will the Rams have interest in these names: Bernard Berrian, Bryant Johnson, Jerry Porter, Donte Stallworth, Lance Briggs, Gibril Wilson, Yeremiah Bell, Jacob Bell, Chris Myers, Deshaun Foster, and Calvin Pace.
Thanks for your time.
Jeff Gordon: The bidding will be fierce for Briggs and Wilson, for sure. It would take ungodly money to get them to jump to a 3-13 team. The Rams have some money, but the team also wants to lock in Atogwe and Jackson. Berrian and Johnson have attractive speed, but can the Rams spend money at WR? Even if Bruce redoes his contract or gets cut, the teams some dough tied up in Bennett and Holt. But we'll see.

I don't see the Rams investing in a RB. Again, re-upping Jackson has to be a priority.

greg b: Hey Gordo,

Is it just me or do you think Bulger needs to hit the weight room and bulk up more, strengthen those little legs of his to add some mobility, because if that was him in that superbowl situation "THE GREAT ESCAPE" that Eli pulled off, Bulger would of prob went down fast. Also does Jay Z know how people feel about the way he's been running the Rams and is he really gonna do the right things, change his ways and get the Rams back on track to contend again? He gets slayed by the fans and media all the time.DO you think h'es finally getting the hint by now?
Jeff Gordon: Jay wants to win. Jay has always wanted to win. He took a beating before the team won two NFC titles and a Super Bowl and he is taking it now. The additions of Saunders and Devaney -- two strong football guys -- ought to really improve the football operation. Will we be praising these changes Jay made? Well, we'll see.

carpediem: Hey Gordo,

What's the story with Kyle McClellan? A first look suggests that he outpitched fellow reliever Chris Perez in the minors (by a large margin)... Now he's being converted to a starter, which makes sense given his repertoire.

My question: What's the MLB ETA on this guy, and do we have any idea on how the Springfield (AA) and Memphis (AAA) rotations are going to shape up?
Jeff Gordon: Memphis ought to have one veteran, Wasdin, along with younger pitchers like Hawksworth, Parisi, Boggs and perhaps Garcia. A healthy Dewon Brazelton would also figure in the Memphis mix. So would Anthony Reyes if he fails to make the Cards. Stu Pomeranz, coming back from repairs, could factor into the Springfield fight along with guys like Garcia, Norrick, Walters, Ottavino, Mortensen, Herron and McClellan.

It will be fascinating to see how the Quad Cities and Palm Beach guys progress. That is where the organization has some real pitching upside. McClellan is a good rotation fit because he is building a four-pitch repertoire.

R.Weyrauch: How can the cardinals justify passing on Fogg for 1 million dollars? Im tired of hearing about wanting flexibility. If we would end up with six sp available Im sure we wouldnt have any trouble trading one of them. If we would have signed Fogg then maybe we dont have to sign Politte,Villone and Brazelton. Those three combined probably cost more than Fogg. Im trying to stay positive about the upcoming season but its tough.
Jeff Gordon: I agree the Fogg investment would have been modest. It would have been more than a minor league invite -- the team's preferred route -- but it could have created trade possibilities for later. Why not err on the side of caution?

Right now, the Cards are placing big bets on Wellemeyer to repeat his '07 success and Reyes to pull himself together. Thompson ought to be a decent fill-in.

Matt: So Jeff, its NHL trade deadline time....

Is there any real possibilities the blues could make a splash? (whether its buy or sell) And what kind of deals if any can we expect to see? Does JD have any goals this deadline?

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: McKee is drawing significant interest, so the Blues may be able to offload that contract. If Davidson pulls that off, he would be able to re-sign either Jackman or Salvador, create an opening for a younger D-man and free money for off-season spending up front.

JD will also listen to offers for Jackman, but he wants a big return. He would also move Backman in the right scenario and Rucinsky as well.

But don't look for him to make a big killing selling off players. And I'd be shocked if he sacrificed much to get a short-term scorer.

robert sanders: After seeing how things went with Pettite and Clemens and hearings, McGwire's statements do not look so bad. Does this improve his chances for the HOF?
Jeff Gordon: In time, as Hall of Fame voters realize how rampant the steroid/HGH abuse really was, all these guys will have a better chance. How do you sort through it all?

But this process will take time. In two years, we'll know a lot more about what really happened.

Mike: If Reyes has a good to great sping do the Cardinals trade him or do they keep him?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards would have to keep him as the No. 4 or No. 5 starter. And if he held up in that role, maybe, just maybe, he could turn the corner here.

Jayman: Whats up Jeff! I was just reading an article about Izzy closing in on 300 saves. Do you think he could reach the hall of fame as a Cardinal and how many saves would he have to get to get there.
Jeff Gordon: He is a long shot for the Hall. There are a lot of modern closers piling up gaudy saves totals. Hoffman and Rivera are the modern relievers likely to get in.

Dominic: Hey Jeff:
Thank you for taking the time to answer all the same questions over and over, youre the best! Why dont the Rams just bite the bullet and release these players to gain cap space and move forward with new players? Little,Glover,Chavous, both Halls, restructure Bennetts contract and the malcontents,Bryd,Claude"Rotten" and the fringe players like Goldberg,Leckey etc..After all, with them we won a whopping 3 games! Can we do any worse?
Jeff Gordon: I would expect more than the usual one-third roster turnover this year. And, yes, you named many obvious candidates. Little is a tough call, but this could be the time to switch to a 3-4 and bid farewell to him. His age and injury history are big issues to a team coming back from 3-13.

Andy from Saint Louis: Jeff,

Do you think the Patriots will resign Randy Moss? If they don't what do think the chances of him signing with the rams are? Also, what free sgents will the Rams have the best shot of obtaning in?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: If Moss leaves the Patriots, I'd expect him to land with a contender with a strong coaching staff. To go to a 3-13 team, he would want silly money. Given his age and history, this team needs to spend its money elsewhere.

Terry Griesenauer, Atlanta: What is your projected opening day lineup against righthanders and lefthanders? Where do you project the Cards to finish in the Central Division and what will be their win/loss record?

Thanks. Always enjoy your column and Gordo Live Q&A!!!
Jeff Gordon: Could the Cards contend? If everything went well, yes. Realistically, we're looking at about 80 victories unless the Cards change course and add pitching help.

Here is my revised line-up (what I would want to see, not what I expect) against RH and LH:

VS. RH

Schumaker, CF
Ankiel, RF
Pujols, 1B
Duncan, LF
Glaus, 3B
Molina, C
Kennedy, 2B
Starting pitcher
Izturis

VS LH

Miles, 2B
Ankiel, CF
Pujols, 1B
Glaus, 3B
Ludwick, RF
Molina, C
Spiezio, LF
Starting Pitcher
Izturis, SS

I would rather just leave Ankiel in RF, but I realize that moving him to center against lefties makes sense. Ludwick can play there, but that is asking a lot. Ditto for Barton, who lacks a throwing arm.

If Spiezio can pull himself together this spring, he could help as an extra outfielder/infielder and get some ABs. Otherwise, Barton could earn some ABs.

As you can tell, I don't expect Rasmus or Juan Gone to open with the team. If they did, then Barton heads back to Cleveland as a Rule 5 reclaim and Schumaker could hit the trade block.

Dl Lundstrom: Does any body see a conflict of interest developing? La Russa has long favored playing vetrans, now has come out favoring the signing of Barry Bonds when the team direction supposedly wants to play youth. Conflict? Tenure?
Jeff Gordon: Not really. He will manage what he is given -- and it's clear that Mozeliak wants to see what the young guys can do before revisiting trade and free agency for '09. La Russa has played kids before -- like in the '06 playoffs -- and done quite well.

Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff, after watching the games this weekend. I think it is a wake up call for the Blues. I think we need to either cash in and get some good draft picks or pick up some other people and cut off the dead weight. I have realy enjoyed watching the Blues this season. This on and off winning is killing me. If you were running the team. Which direction would you go? Draft picks or veteran help?
Thank You
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Keep going with kids. Move McKee's salary. See what Backman and Jackman could fetch in a trade. Bring back Woywitka. Promote Charles Linglet to see if there is anything there. Play Yan Stastny and David Perron. Sign Oshie this spring and take a quick look at him. Promote Polak from Peoria when he is back to full speed.

Justin: Hey Gordo,

I am guessing that most of evaluating players comes during the games at Spring Training, but I am willing to bet that they are still being observed heavily at this point in the process.

With that said, have you heard how Rasmus is looking down there so far? Expect him to make the team out of camp?

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Too early to say until he sees a LOT of big league pitching. That will come late in spring training. But independent talent evaluators rave about his potential. I see him starting in Memphis unless he crushes the ball this spring. But we'll see him as a Cardinal at some point this season.

john: Hi Jeff,

The 50th anniversary tribute to the Saint Louis Hawks is coming up. I hope this stirs up more interest in pro-basketball in this town.

What would it take for Saint Louis to get the NBA to this town? The Memphis Grizzlies are for sale, and I believe Dave Checketts or some other big money person around town should pick up the tab.

I just don't believe the prevailing wisdom that Saint Louis couldn't support four major sports franchises. I think the money & support would be there if the teams are run competently. Having all 4 major sports (or even 5 with soccer) in town would help put Saint Louis back on the map in the national scene, which has an energizing effect on business, commerce, downtown, the baseball village, etc.

A lot of people who like basketball would never go to a hockey game and vice versa.

When do you think the NBA will take a look at Saint Louis for a franchise? I think we're a ripe market just waiting to be found.
Jeff Gordon: The corporate dollars hold the key. And the corporate dollars aren't there for four teams, plus Division I basketball and the MLS. St. Louis may be hard-pressed to keep three pro teams in the decades to come -- unless this region sees major economic growth.

cora behnke: several nice articles from fox sports, mlb, and toronto papers why do you think no articles from stl media? you guys were very hard on him during the off season. could this be the reason?
Jeff Gordon: Are you talking about Scott Rolen? We all hope it works out for him in Toronto. The guy helped the Cards win two pennants and a World Series. It's too bad he couldn't play for La Russa anymore, but that was his decision.

George: Jeff, Do you believe the Blues should try and make a deal for a number one Center or wait until the off season to address their offensive woes? What do you think about the possibility of trying to deal for the center Jokinen (sp) of Florida, (if he is available)? Would a package of say, Backman, Stempniak, McDonald, Eller, and a 2008 2nd Rounder (we have two 2nd round draft choices this year) get it done or would it take even more than that? Jokinen would replace McDonald's minutes and we would have a number 1 center for the rest of this year and next and we will probably have Bergland as the number 2 next year. It should make the Blues very strong up the middle for the next few years and as an added bonus Jokinen has 14 PP goals this year, which might be more than the Blues have as a team. kidding of course, but you know what I mean.
Jeff Gordon: Jokinen is a power player, which is why so many teams want him. But the package you propose is much to big. McDonald is a point-per-game center under contract for $3.5 million next season. He stays. The center I love is Brad Richards, a player the team could get for the mentioned package minus McDonald. But Brad makes nearly $8 million per season, which is a killer.

The Blues do need another center for next season as Berglund and Eller develop. And they will have the money available to make something happen.

petey: If the rams were to take J.Long, what do you see as the future of Barron or Pace....would they dare cut O. Pace? move barron to guard? I think Long will be good but we have 2 first rounders there and we aren't going to give another one a HUGE contract to ride the pine.

Gholston is my personal favourite pick....who is yours?
Jeff Gordon: I still like Chris Long. The Rams like Dorsey a lot, assuming his leg is OK. As for Jake Long, the Rams could draft him as a third OT and let him either beat out Barron or replace Pace when O.P. got hurt. If all three made it through the season, then Barron could also get a look at guard while the team decided to re-sign him to replace Pace in '09.

StL fan in RI: What are the chances of both Bruce and Little restructuring their contracts to help with cap room? I would really like to see Ike finish his career in a Rams uniform. And, is there any interest in aquiring Hall in free agency from Atlanta?

Thanks for answering our relentless questioning. Usually agree, sometimes don't, but always interesting.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have been able to restructure in the past. Little and Bruce would have to play along. And the team would have to decide that both still have something left. Tough calls all around.

DeAngelo Hall has made it very clear he wants out of Atlanta. Devaney knows him well, obviously, but he has a year left on deal. The Journal-Constitution reported that the Giants and Redskins may both want to deal for him, offering first-round picks.

ted: Hey jeff, whats going to happen to little and bruce do u think that little will work with the rams to get the situation resolved. Who do u see the rams drafting 2nd overall.
Jeff Gordon: I think it's a coin flip on those two right now. What are they willing to play for? Should the Rams go to the 3-4?

I still like C. Long with that pick, but I can also see the Rams moving down a bit to add something else.

Kevin: Jeff,

No Weaver? No Morris? No Wells? No pitcher?

No Bay? No Stewart? No batter?

What say the Cards?

Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: Stewart didn't excite me. Bay is interesting, but I'd rather see what Duncan, Rasmus and Ankiel really have.

Weaver I'd take, on a minor-league deal. Same with Wells. If Pittsburgh wants to dump Morris' salary at the end of spring training, Mo ought to jump at that.

Tacleberry: Is it fair to say, pending any unforseen acquisition, that the Cardinals have the worst pitching staff in baseball as of today? Seriously, we have 3 starters in place and two of them are average at best until proven otherwise. Then you have Wellemeyer, who despite a high winning percentage last year, was used only when it was very necessary. Brad Thompson is a guy who you wouldn't mind as your #5 if Carp/Mulder/Clement/Wainwright were in place. And finally you have Reyes, who nobody thought would even be in camp let alone competing for a starting spot. All hail the Re-tread Redbirds. If only we could find a consultant role for Dennis Green with the team, hmmm?
Jeff Gordon: Yet if Clement, Mulder and Carpenter all return this year, the Cards could have one of the elite staffs in August. Hence the hesitation by Mozeliak to go overboard now.

It's an odd situation, having three high-end hurlers healing at the same time.

Dave Mustain: Hi Gordo,
It's been stated several times on STL that perhaps the Cards were being stingy concerning their lack of pursuit in obtaining the likes of Colon, Weaver, Fogg, and the like. Not that I totally disagree, or for that matter have a need to defend management, but that is a hard call for me. I am kind of curious to see how a Wellemeyer and some others might do as oppossed to plugging in a retread. I, for one, am not going to lose much sleep over not trying to sign the pitchers I just mentioned...there are valid reasons why they are still unsigned. Any thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Supply exceeded pitching demand this year, since many GMs wisely decided to take a look at their own hurlers before overspending on marginal free agents. Fogg settled for one year and Colon settled for a minor league deal. Weaver will have to do the same.

Reyes gets another chance because of all this. And if he pays off, that really changes things.

bornramfan: I think the rams should seriously think about trading a draft pick for johnathan Vilma! Maybe switch 1st round picks,or giving up our second.Vilma would be perfect in the middle. This would move Will Whitherspoon to outside where he had seven sacks last year! this can help out our pass rush when L.Little gets back and we draft the 2008 Grant Winstrom Aka Chris Long.Linebacker core would be outstanding with Vilma,Spoon,Pisa and when they switch to haslett sometimey 3-4 Def you can put Draft on the feild!
Jeff Gordon: Vilma is interesting, for the reasons you mentioned.

Fletcher: Wow! Jeff I have been watching the combine on the NFL network and I must say I am impressed. Which is making the decision on what to do with our pick so much harder. At first, I thought trade it, but now not so much. My decision comes between the two Long's, I favor Chris (defense 1st)but, Jake has made such a strong case. I need to know a few things:
1. During last seasons carousel of offensive lineman was there any young unknowns that stood out, you know a diamond in the rough? I feel like if there is then we can pass on Jake and still get a good tackle in the 2nd round.
2. What happened with James Hall a.k.a. (savior on the other side)? We just spent $ on getting him, is he now expendable? Seeing how we need a starter out of our pick would he hit the bench after all that $ he got?
3. My last question is most important. Do we have the kind of coaches that can make a good o.lineman great. With all those lineman we bought in last year the coaches should have raised someones game. Can we coach people up?
4. Who would you pick second why?
Jeff Gordon: I'd take C. Long, given the uncertainty with Little and Hall's age/injury issues. Long could be a better version of Wistrom. There ARE other OTs in this draft and perhaps one of them could be there in the second round.

The O-linemen the Rams brought in last year were rejects. The key will be making Barron, Setterstrom and Incognito click this year.

jim: will the blues have any interest/chance in someone like Marian Hossa? i thought that i read a rumor where he may be available. any truth to that?
Jeff Gordon: He's very available, but richer teams are making a move on him as a rental. The Note should wait until the summer and bid on him as a free agent. He seems intent on testing the market.

zn2003: This question is so narrow it's possible no one could answer it. So I will either be taxing your memory or asking you to ask around among football contacts, if you can. The question is for someone who (1) saw a lot of Jumbo Elliott back when he was Parcells left OT, (2) remembers what he saw, and (3) has seen Jake Long play. So, now, the question: is it possible J.Long could become a kind of Jumbo Elliott style left OT? Cause remember, Elliott was supposed to be a pure right OT also. What's the difference? (That's a legit question, not rhetorical.) Also, do football people (ie, the Rams) think it's possible J.Long can play guard in the NFL? (If so, then, they could draft him without benching Barron.)

In a sense that's all academic, though, because unless there is some terrible medical revelation about Dorsey, I assume he's the pick. The fact that he played hurt for most of the last 2 seasons and STILL managed to impress people as the best prospect in the entire 2008 draft class says a lot. It means that he can play with pain (duh). It's also of course significant that he could rate that high even though he was banged up. I mean---imagine how good he'll be healthy, with NFL coaching and training. I wasn't put off by the injury comments---they convinced me he's a sure bet.
Jeff Gordon: Dorsey does intrigue the Rams because he was a game-breaker in college. He played hurt and still made himself noticed. There is concern about a previous leg fracture. Some teams may sour on him because of that.

I can't help you with a Long/Elliott comparison. But drafting him as a guard would be silly. The team already has young guards. If the Rams really want another one, the team can nab one in the second round.

Matt: Jeff- Most of the mock drafts have the Rams targeting DE Chris long or OT Jake Long with the second pick. Wouldn't it make more sense to draft DT Glen Dorsey if he's available and just move Carriker out to his natural position? Then Carriker could play opposite Little (with a renogiated contract) and Dorsey could pair up with DT Ryan who I hear they're pleased with anyway.
As far as the O-line goes I know Pace has been injured the past 2 seasons, but he should still have several good years left in him negating the need for a stud LT right away. Since the draft is risky anyway, wouldn't it make more sense to bet on players like Little and Pace returning to form rather than replacing them at this point in time?
Jeff Gordon: Dorsey is fascinating, but the Rams are better off at DT than they are at DE or OT. Hence the dilemma!

Eddie D: what's up gordo? I just heard from the NFL network that the cowboys were willing to trade 3 of their top picks to Miami for the number one spot. What are the chances of the rams getting involved in that? Or at least trading down to 5 or 6 to aquire more picks?
Jeff Gordon: A trade back is real possible, especially if teams are moving up to get Ryan and McFadden - two guys the Rams don't want.

cyclone77: JG,

Thank you for your time and input in regard to informing us die hard fans.

I'm a big fan of special team play in the NFL. From field position to exciting scores.

I am not in favor of spending a high day 1 draft choice on a returner mainly due to risk vs reward.

I do not want the # 2 WR returning kicks, mainly punts, looking skyward while some head hunter closes in drawing a target on the returners chest.

In the GSOT days the Rams had it set up perfectly with # 3 or 4 WR Hakim returning punts while #'s 1 and 2 were not exposed. When Az went on to the big payday he discovered he was not a # 1 or 2 WR.

With this in mind do you think Stanley and / or Williams can be the Rams next Az Hakim?

Stanley with limited opportunities had very positive results the end of 07. Williams was a day 1 draft choice cut after the start of the season to clear room for another needed then when he gets into the horns he injures a ankle.

Seeing these on the practice field do either of them show enough to use on KR / PR so that we do not expose the next T Holt or I Bruce who I think will be the Rams # 1 and 2 WR's in 08?

My 08 Ram WR's:

1 - Holt
2 - Bruce (with a reworked contract)
3 - Day 1 draft choice eventual Bruce replacement.
4 - Bennett if healthy in 08 showes drastic improvement.
5 - Stanley # 1 KR.
6 - Williams # 2 KR / # 1 PR.

PS Hagans.
Hall no cap hit due to aquiring in trade.

GO RAMS !!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Stanley earned a look for next year. Let's see what Saunders thinks of him, but he did look better returning kicks than the others. And he has some burst.

Tom: Hi Gordo,

At this point, who is the leading contender to hit leadoff for the Cardinals this season? If Izturis, what is his career OBP? Is he a threat to steal a significant number of bases?

Thanks,
Tom (Cedar Rapids, IA)
Jeff Gordon: Izturis bats ninth. Ryan, if he can knock off Izturis, Schumaker or Rasmus as the best lead-off options. Miles could do it on occasion as well.

sean: Gordo,

Regarding the Rams

Have you heard anything regarding the possibility of trading down and accumilating extra pics on the first day of the draft? We have too many needs compared to picks and no cap room currently for impact free agents. Any news in regards to the salary cap figures, such as letting Leonard Little go or restructuring his deal, or any news about the futures of I. Bruce, J. Hall, L. Glover, P. Tinoisamoa, O. Pace, or C. Chavous about their contracts (restructuring) or letting go?
Jeff Gordon: I expect them to gain more cap room, one way or another. I could see the Rams moving back a few spots, but this franchise needs to land one of the top five or six guys. The Rams need impact players.

Dan: Hi Gordo

It seems that the Rams will select Jake Long and many "experts" believe he will be a Right Tackle in the NFL. If so, do you think the Rams try to move Barron to another team? Or is he being groomed to replace Pace?
Jeff Gordon: Barron could replace Pace some day if he learns how to play at the NFL level. My guess: Another team dramatically overpays Barron next year as a free agent and he leaves.

Eric Smith: Now that Georgia has passed, what happened to her share of the team? Who is majority owner now? How has that changed things for the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: Chip Rosenbloom controls the team now. In the near term, John Shaw steps back and Jay Zygmunt does more. Long term, who knows?

craig matson-wilson: Hi jeff long time Ram Fan e-mailing you all the way from Pasadena ,Ca here, and wonder if the Rams have the Iowa St LB Alvin Bowen rated high enough to select in say the 4th round as a replacement for Chiller?

Can you also please tell me if Devaney and the rest of the Ram team 'Brain Trust' want just speed at wideout without respect to size or can we fans pencil in 5-9 recievers as equal to 6' plus wr given and equal dash time and other ability ??

Are They high on the Mich. St. reciever Devin Thomas ,or the stout wr-rb Marcus Smith from New Mexico who can both run 40yds at 4.4 at aprox 6-1,215lbs as picks in rounds 2-5 ??
Jeff Gordon: What happens with Chillar? Tough to say. There are free agent options as well. The Rams want speed at WR. They have size with Bennett. They have a great route runner in Holt. But I don't see this team spending big to get that speed at WR, given the other needs.

Rey: Gholston had a monster workout at the combine. Which player is higher on the Rams list, Gholston or C. Long?
Jeff Gordon: Long, but the development you mention would allow the Rams to slide down a bit and still get an impact guy.

zn2003: Upon review, looks like Loney was a good hire.

Some testimonials:

Wagoner, Nick’s Mailbag - February 24, 2008

From the people I have talked to about new offensive line coach Steve Loney, I believe his addition alone will improve the play of the offensive line.

Jim Thomas Live, February 5

I know Loney and Valero are FOSLs (Friends of you know how) but I've heard good things about them from players and coaches.

Bernie Miklasz, 02/02/2008

"Gil Brandt, the personnel guru who helped build the great Dallas Cowboys teams of the 1960s and 1970s, is a big fan of new Rams offensive line coach Steve Loney. 'He's one of the best young offensive line coaches in the league," Brandt said. "He can really build the camaraderie.'

Howard Balzer 24 Jan 2008

Loney was successful in Minnesota, and he had better players than he did than the one year he was in Arizona. Loney didn't control who the Cardinals signed for the line. Dennis Green had that control. Art Valero was a very respected coach in Tampa Bay. So was Loney in Minnesota. I have said several times that I don't believe Boudreau was fired based on the line's performance. If that was the case, the assistant line coach would also have been fired. He has a chance to get Loney now, so that's what he's doing.

Len Pasquarelli, Jan-17-08

During Loney's tenure as line coach in Minnesota, the Vikings led the league in rushing offense in 2002 and in total offense in 2003 and set a franchise record for total yards in 2004. He is highly regarded for his emphasis on technique work and for his design of the running game.
Jeff Gordon: Timmerman's words meant a lot, since he wasn't thrilled with what happened here before. This line could really turn if Incognito and Setterstrom return healthy and ready to work.

Ryan: Do you think Spiezio has a guaranteed spot on the 25-man? If players like Barton, Schumaker, Ryan, JuanGone, etc all produce at a high level, could Spiezio potentially miss the cut?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, he could miss. But if he hits this spring, works hard and proves his life is turned around, his versatility and power would make him hard to let go. He can play five positions and hit both sides.

Tacleberry: Does Linehan's job security beyond this year hinge on this team making the playoffs or just being a contender in 2008?
Jeff Gordon: To get a new deal, he would have to REALLY turn things around. Playoff contention is important, but so is the overall organizational vibe.

Ryan: What is your take on the Cards' cleanup spot for 2008? Is it a good bet that we'll see Glaus there against lefties and Duncan there against righties?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, that makes sense. Glaus doesn't righties for a high enough average to stay in the No. 4 spot.

Nick J: Hey Jeff,
What do you think the chances are of the Rams acquiring Asante Samuel? I think he would be a tremendous addition on defense and put to bed any concerns at the CB position--we could stop worrying about whether Fakhir Brown will show up or whether Ron Bartell will develop in time. With Samuel, the younger corners will benefit in the long run. And if not Samuel, what about DeAngelo Hall? I think it would be a wise investment. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Why would he come to a 3-13 team when many contenders covet him?

Clyde: Just a couple of comments. I loved what Marshall Faulk said about it doesn't matter what New England did. The NFL is not going to let it get out and they are not going to take away their trophy or their rings. Marshall is one of NFL Networks favorite sons and for him to say what he did on his SPRINT site makes a great point and is a stab at the NFL and the Patriots. We all know they cheated. I would like your comment on my take on something you wrote last week. I believe the main reason New England won that 1st Super Bowl is the refs and thus the NFL allowed the Patriots to mug the receivers. Marshall got tackled more on pass routes than running plays. I disagree that the NFL changed due to that game. It wasn't until the next year after they did the same thing to Saint Manning and the Colts that they changed the "emphasis"... Thanks for your time and your comments from a long distance Idaho Rams fan. Clyde
Jeff Gordon: True, the NFL didn't truly reform pass coverage rules enforcement until another round of playoff muggings occurred. The Rams did plant the seeds for change after Super Bowl 36, but the league took awhile to really change things.

Adam G: Sundin elected to not waive his trade clause. Thoughts? Does this impact the Blues in any way?
Jeff Gordon: This impacts Cup contenders like Detroit, teams willing to spend big on a rental. Now we need to see what Forsberg wants to do. If he doesn't play, then you will the bidding on Jokinen and Richards intensify.

This doesn't really impact the Blues.

Hang Time: Any chance the Rams will draft a QB?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, later in the draft.

jrocke217: with the recent signing of denes simonyi, does this open a door to maybe trade one of our prospect catchers in the system? maybe a bryan anderson, depending on how simonyi does this spring.
Jeff Gordon: Anderson is a nice hitter, but can he catch? If his defense doesn't improve dramatically, he won't stick here. And with Molina locked in, Anderson is more likely to be traded either way. I don't see him playing another position for this team.

keith krewson: Can we get the young forward Bergfolder from the Devils for Mckee since they have some interest in him
Jeff Gordon: The Blues are just trying to dump McKee's contract. Bergfors is regarded as the top New Jersey prospect. I don't see the Devils giving up much more than a draft pick for Jay. They are much better players on the trade market.

Dave: Gordo-

Please tell me that the Rams are going after FA DE Justin Smith. I'm already reading up that the 49ers are pursuing him heavily.
Jeff Gordon: He isn't a big sack guy, so I don't know how much interest the Rams have. If they are going to invest in a DE, it will have to be a sack guy.

jrocke217: does mozeliak really even know what he wants? first he says their not looking at pitchers, next it's well we been in contact with weaver & colon, then they shoot down wells. what's the deal here, are they talking to free agents or are they gonna go with what they currently have. i would prefer to stay with what we got right now, giving the prospects a chance to crack the roster or rotation. but if we could snag a free agent for a cheap price(minor league deal) then i'd go for that also.
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak might offer a minor league deal to the right veteran, depending on how spring training is progressing. Colon took a minor league deal in Boston. I assume Weaver would do the same here, since nobody else should want him.

jrocke217: so larussa hasn't made up his mind yet on the cleanup hitter yet. say if gonzalez hits real well in camp, would he be considered the bat in the lineup to protect pujols instead of glaus, duncan, or ankiel?
Jeff Gordon: Juan Gone would have to have the BEST CAMP EVER to end up with a regular job and the No. 4 spot. He hasn't been a viable big league hitter in a long, long time.

Kevin: Jeff,

What has to happen for Josh Phelps to make this team?

Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: I think he has a real shot to be the RH pinch-hitter. It would help him if Spiezio did poorly. Also, it would help if some of the OFs fade, since Duncan could also offer Pujols Insurance at first base -- IF there are plenty of outfielders.

Dan: Gordo,

What kind of shot does Anthony Reyes have in being this years version of Fausto Carmona?
Jeff Gordon: If he keeps pitching well, he opens the season as the No. 3 or No. 4 starter. And he stays there if he pitches well.

Farbod: Hey Jeff,

What do you think are the chances of the Rams taking Vernon Gholston at #2? I mean if Chris Long gets taken at #1 then that leaves us with the best DT...isn't our need still at DE? I'd just love to see Gholston in a Rams uniform tearing it up at end.

Thanks Jeff!

this was my first post btw :D
Jeff Gordon: I don't see the Rams taking him at No. 2 if Ryan, Dorsey and McFadden are all on the board and making other teams drool. Somebody would want to deal.

Tom: Hi Jeff! There has been a fair amount of press concerning Dorsey's injuries which appear aimed at leading one to believe that he is possibly damaged goods. Naturally Glen has downplayed these reports as being exaggerated given that if substantiated they could cause his stock to tumble. Can you help us to see through the smoke? Are the Rams still high on him?

Also what is your take on who Miami will select at #1 overall barring a trade down? Lately some mock drafts are projecting the Tuna selecting a qb with the first overall pick.
Jeff Gordon: Projections for Miami are all over the map. A trade would not surprise me. As for Dorsey, the Rams love his talent. The leg is another matter, though.

Vince B.: Gordo,

In your opinion, who are the odd men out in the outfield? It would be nice to keep Gonzalez and Rasmus instead of Schumaker and Barton with the big club.

Also, is Ryan the odd man out in the infield considering the number of pitchers on the 25-man roster? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Unless Izturis is terrible this spring, Ryan could return to Memphis as the regular SS. This is not the end of the world for Ryan. Also, Kennedy's hitting has something to do with this. And Spiezio's play factors in.

Barton intrigues me because he can hit. It would be tough to give him back to Cleveland without taking a good look at him.

Nick (Cal): Thank for taking the time to answer some more questions!

Assuming C Long is available at #2, I am guessing I am guessing the Rams staff will play it safe and draft him as they did Carriker last year. If that were the case, how does the 2nd round pick shake out? Maybe Dorsey falls a la Branch from last year. Do the Rams grab him and hope he is good to go or will they play it safe an go with the best need pick? I see DT as a mediocre need versus DB and OL, but Dorsey at (essentially) 33 could be a tremendous steal. It almost reminds me of a DT steal from a few years back when Detroit snagged S Rodgers when he slid. Speaking of which could we give up a #2 for him or is he worth it?

I know its all hypothetical but hey thats the only ammusement we have in the off season...
Jeff Gordon: Dorsey won't slide far, unless all the doctors freak out after looking at his x-rays.

Richie: Gordo,

With the trade deadline approaching and the Blues current losses, are they going to be more of a seller than a buyer? Have you heard any recent rumors?
Jeff Gordon: More likely they will sell, to gather a few picks, maybe a prospect or two. Mostly this team needs to clearly budget space for more spending this summer. Also, the team needs to make way for some kids.

Armen Dacity: Gordo,

Apart from the obvious (C.Long, J.Long) are there any prospects that the Rams seemed to have demonstrated a particular interest in during the Combine?
Jeff Gordon: Dorsey could still end up No. 1 on their draft board.

Will Patterson: What is the potential for Anthony Reyes if he pitches to the best of his ability? Where would he fall into a rotation 1-5? Do you belive that he can realize that potential as a Cardinal? How does he look this spring?
Jeff Gordon: The reports from our beat guys are good, but its early. At his best, he would fit in as the No. 3 guy behind Wainwright and Pineiro to start the year. At his best, he could fight for the No. 5 spot after Carpenter, Mulder and Clement return.

scott /la.: Gordo-How is Josh Phelps doing in Spring Training?I haven't heard any reports on him---is he spending most of his defensive work at catcher /first base/or outfield? How does Phelps look in the hitting cage?Does he have a shot at making the Cards?
Jeff Gordon: He is a first baseman. Can he catch in a pinch? Yes. But LaRue is the No. 2 catcher. Basically he has to make the team as a pinch-hitter and go from there.

Stu: The trade deadline is tomorrow. Where do you see Jackman, Mckee, Salvador, or Rucinsky going? I've heard Mckee and Jackman going to either Devils or Pens, but I don't see us trading both. Rucinsky should fetch a decent return, although his recent performance has been sub par to say the least. I'd say a third to fourth rounder at best. Finally, Salvador... I'd like to see him stay with the club. He's really shown that he has game the past couple of years. I think the blues could get him to stay at a cheap price (2-3 mil) over a couple of more years. What do you think about these players and their destinations?
Jeff Gordon: I'd deal both McKee (Devils or Penguins) and Jackman, since I don't see investing big FA dollars in Barret based on his play for Murray. Davidson wants to get a lot for Jackman, so the deal might not happen. You're right about Rucinsky's trade value and Salvador's value to this team.

jeff0120: What would you deem an acceptable package in return for Barret Jackman?
Jeff Gordon: A second-round pick and a forward prospect capable of competing for a spot next year.

Don: Gordo--I don't understand the deal with Chillar. He is a good OLB. Are the Rams not intersted in re-signing him becuase they don't have the cap room? Will he really command a high price in free agency? Seems that the Rams have let some good players go at this juncture in the player's career and now regret it. Big Grease Pickett and Kevin Curtis immedialty come to mind. I know there have been others. I would hope that Devaney would reaxamine this "let'em go as they enter their prime" policy.
Jeff Gordon: They have the cap room to keep Chillar. There is some discussion about whether better players are available in free agency or the draft.

matt"mvp"stroehmer: hey gordo, asking from my high schools pc.

I'm becoming nervous, more and more so as the combine goes on that the Rams won't take DE Long from Virginia.

Not that we won't pick him but that the Dolphins snatch him up. Should I be concerned?
Jeff Gordon: That could happen, but the Rams would move into a great position to move down to No. 5 or No. 6 and come out fine.

Ty: Whats the Early read on Brain Barton? Is he healthy? Does he have a good attitude and work ethic? How has he looked in the drills and in the Cage? What is your early prediction on him making the team?
Jeff Gordon: Barton has put up decent minor league numbers, but he did so as an older, more mature player at the Class A and AA levels. So he has a big jump to make. He hs the wheels to play all three outfield spots, so I'd expect him to get a very long look.

Rick: Gordo,

Do you think that the Blues are dissapointed in Kariya's offensive contribution. I thought he would be the go to guy when the team needed a goal, but I have been very dissapointed. I know it's not just him, but he is making the big money and he needs to produce. Your thoughts.

Thanks, Rick
Jeff Gordon: I certainly am surprised he hasn't done more on the play. He can still skate, handle and pass the puck -- but this team needs a finisher.

Big Thirsty: So when can we expect the rams to start making moves to clean up there cap situation?
Jeff Gordon: Very soon, so they can decide where to go with free agency.

Big Thirsty: are the rams interested in Shaun Rodgers
Jeff Gordon: Clifton Ryan does he does, and for small money.

Big Thirsty: do you think the rams might make a run at jeff faine/alan fanaca/larry allen
Jeff Gordon: If the Rams keep Romberg, they will have their starting five back with Pace, Setterstrom, Incognito and Barron. I see them adding depth in free agency, not a starter. The draft could be a different matter, with Jake Long in the mix.

Big Thirsty: what are the rams plans for wr drew bennet
Jeff Gordon: Make him useful in 2008.

jccardinalfan: So, who are the Rams going to draft #2 overall and why?
Jeff Gordon: Chris Long, if he is there, because they need an impact DE give the age and injury history of Little and Hall. Carriker and Adeyanju could be run-stopping DEs, but Long could be more disruptive.

bjwstl: hey Gordo,
Any news on how pujols is looking? If we have any chance of staying competitive until our big name pitchers come back we need have to have a start like '06, not '07.
Jeff Gordon: Albert's elbow is OK, which is good. Can the Cards stay competitive until they start getting pitchers back? Yeah, but Duncan and Ankiel will both have to hit well. Kennedy will have to bounce back and Molina must avoid a terrible start.

Steve C.: Hey Gordo,

Looks like Jackman is going to be traded. What, realistically speaking, can we get for him? I hate to see him go. He's not having one of his best yrs but the guy is a warrior. He's not afraid of any situation and is by far our most physical defenseman.
Jeff Gordon: Again, I'd want a second-round pick (in a deep draft) and a AHL-level prospect capable of bidding for work next year.

Superjim: Hey Gordo,

I heard we're negotiating with O.J. Atogwe over a long term deal with a view to avoiding restricted free agency. Is it looking likely to be done in time?
I was also wondering if Kenny Phillips could become this year's Alan Branch and drop into the top of the second round. Any thoughts? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Mel Kiper Jr. has Phillips dropping, so, yes, it could happen. And I'm pretty optimistic the Rams will get Atogwe locked in long term. He is on the cusp of being Pro Bowl-caliber.

Dave: Jeff,

With all the GM's that have decided not to throw big money at some of the marginal free agents, how long before the player's union starts to scream collusion again?
Jeff Gordon: Enough money got tossed around to eliminate that concern. Collusion requires orchestrated effort. I think we're just seeing common sense prevailing for a change.

Ryan: It's early, but - any word on who's looking real solid in camp right now (fielding, hitting, or overall effort) among the following roster hopefuls:
Barton
Rasmus
Phelps
Ryan
Schumaker
?
Jeff Gordon: There were interesting early stories on Schumaker's hard work in the offseason and on Ryan's need to tread a bit more softly in the big league clubhouse. But the real fun is about to start.

So far all the news about the position players has been encouraging. It's the pitchers who all need more time to get ready . . .

Kyle: Hey Jeff,

Thanks for taking my question or perhaps questions...

Do you think Boyes has what it takes to come alive again and put this team on his shoulders and take them down the stretch with a respectable push or has he plateaued this season? Secondly, who do you think is worth more to this organization moving forward past the trade deadline, Jackman (and his lack-luster all-around play in a contract 'option' year) or Salvador (and his downside on the offensive side of the puck)? Third, do you think Perron was 'punished' per say by Murray for his tenacious play early in the first period of last night's game by limiting his ice time? What does that mean for the dynamics of a team that will put increasing pressure on it's prospects to maintain their talent prowess and be expected to perform for this team in every game they're in the line-up?
Jeff Gordon: I don't mind Murray's unyielding approach to the young Blues. In Perron's case, he reached the NHL after playing just one productive year of major junior hockey. He beat long odds to get this far this quickly -- and he still has to get stronger. Stuff like grabbing the puck and heaving it down the ice doesn't really help.

Boyes has reached his potential. He has become a 30-goal player, which is a heck of a step. I see him as a Cory Stillman-type, a good additional scorer but not a perennial all-star. He is a very nice player, but not a high-end scorer.

Jackman hasn't played well for Murray. It's that simple. He hasn't been great with the puck and fast skaters turn the corner on him. I would not give him, say, $14 million over four years. I'd keep Salvador, deal McKee and line up Woywitka, Polak and Wagner to play next season.

Fabian: Hey Jeff, there has been a lot of talk about not wasting money on "marginal" free agents and spending wisely. There has also been a lot of talk about the class of free agents coming up at the end of this season. I think a lot of people are willing to give the organization the benefit of the doubt, and believe that the club will finally have an active winter. That being said I heard that the Yankees have in the neighborhood of 86 million in contracts expiring at the end of the season. SO we KNOW that there aren't afraid to overspend for free agents, don't you think its more than likely that we are going to be on the short end of it again this winter? And once agian Dewitt will have an excuse not to spend.
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt is never going to outbid the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets or Dodgers for players. That won't happen. Could the Cards buy some players after seeing where they stand this season? Sure. But something like the Santana contract won't happen here.

That is why he has directed Mozeliak to focus on player development. That is why the team wants to see what Duncan, Ankiel, Rasmus, Reyes, Thompson, Ryan, Garcia, Perez, et al can do. That is why the Cards didn't package up a bunch of players for veteran help.

I can't argue with that approach, as long as the Cards follow the Molina deal with long-term deals to lock in Wainwright and (if they hit this year) Duncan and Ankiel.

KW: Gordo,

Do you think the NHL has reached that point in the evolution of the 'new' rules implemented in 2005 where the referees are migrating away from what defined the game of the 'New NHL' to one that's more characteristic of a pre-lockout style of play? I say this because I think there's several recent instances or behaviors that support this, a few of which are: league-wide escalation of increased obstruction on the forechecking player off the dump in; the completely missed call of Giguere playing the puck inside the corner goal line area in Friday night's game and the lifting of the stick by Stempniak in front of the Anaheim goal (whereas the opposing player was not in a position to score or move the puck to scoring position) where he clearly displayed an effort to generate offensive play. Regardless of these specific examples, I'd appreciate your opinion on the evolution of play in it's current state as it relates to the league's expressed objectives.

Thanks for your time Jeff...
Jeff Gordon: I believe the officials are still trying to call obstruction penalties. But there are so many really close games. Look how many games are going to OT and the shootout. I believe a lot of these referees are shying away from deciding games with their calls. This is a natural tendency, one we saw in the NHL forever.

The league is just so close now, with so many teams fighting for playoff spots in hard-fought games. It's like the playoffs have already started.

Danny: Jeff,
Where does Josh Phelps fit into things. When he signed it was played up pretty big in the papers but now it look like he might not even make the team.
Thanks, I enjoy your chats.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards need a RH power-hitting first baseman. The fact he can catch in a pinch helps. But he can't play the OF and either Spiezio or Duncan could replace Pujols at first if Albert's elbow flares up. And there are many candidates for the limited DH at bats. So the roster competition is pretty intense.

That looks like all the questions for today. Thanks and have a nice week!
