| Rob: Jeff, I have to say that i am extremely disappointed in the Rams front office. To let Bruce go over a couple million is just ridiculous and then for him to go to the 49ers is just unacceptable. I know that the Rams want to get younger but Bruce was still very productive as a wide out and it sure would have been special to see him retire as a Ram and having only played for the Rams in both LA and STL. I am utterly disgusted with the Front Office yet again and will not renew my Sunday NFL ticket due to their complete lack of regard for the fans of STL. Bruce to many of us was the original Ram here in STL as he was there the last year in LA and first in STL and to see them treat him and the fans this way is beyond comprehension. How special it could have been. |

| Jeff Gordon: The Blues will certainly have to look at the free-agent marketplace this summer. Adding Oshie and Berglund to the organization would next next year. So would the maturation of Perron. But this team could use another prime-age playmaker for sure. |

I am becoming more and more intrigued with Skip Schumaker as an every day starting OF and lead off hitter for the Cards. It seems he gets on base on a regular basis. Yet if Colby Rasmus continues to have the spring he has started out with, there may be no stopping him. And what about Juan Gonzales? His spring start leads one to think he could be that BIG RH bat that is so badly needed to protect the middle of the order. Jeff, It seems to me TLR may have a real "good" problem to sort out. Are you as optimistic or do you think I have been overcome by the "Spring Fever" otherwise known as "Cardinal Red"?

| Jeff Gordon: Barton can hit, too, although not for power. So this IS an interesting situation. Schumaker deserves to be in the bigs, but he is a less glamorous version of Rasmus. Juan Gone could be a unique addition, if, against all odds. he holds up. If he could just start against lefties, pinch hit and otherwise fill in, he could really help. |

I'm sick to my stomach today after finding out that number 80 is going to San Francisco to join up with Mad Mike! I just can't believe this. Would Jerry Rice have signed with the Rams? Never. It's Saturday morning and so far the Rams have done absolutely NOTHING in free agency! Oh I'll bet they'll sign a few guys nobody's ever heard of for alot of money. Guys who probably won't contribute anything more that a big appitite. Why didn't Mr. Bruce stay? This is truly another sad day for RAM FANS, but Issac deserves the money he is getting in SF. He may be 35, but he still is one of the top revievers in the game. As for Bennette the RAMS paid you good money last year, and you were a flop. You better step up and prove to RAM FANS that you deserve that kind of money. Ike sure does. |

I have two questions. Can you explain the reasoning behing the Blues trade of their best and most reliable defenseman in Salvador for a talentless goon? Was that the best they could get in return for a quality defenseman?
Why does Murray continue to Brad Boyes on the point on the first PP unit? I know he has a good shot but Boyes is not suited to play the blue line as evident in the short handed goal they gave up against the Sharks on Saturday. There have been a number of times that the Blues have given up a breakway or an odd man rush on the PP because Boyes is not a defenseman. |
Jeff Gordon: It is always tricky putting a forward on the PP point. A lot of teams do it out of necessity. Ideally, the Blues will develop somebody to play across from Erik Johnson on the first unit next year. Then Boyes could use that big shot curling into the high slot or off the half boards into the circle. Perhaps Wagner could fill that role next year.
As for Salvador, he WAS the team's steadiest D this year. But he was headed to unrestricted free agency. The Blues signed Jackman instead, largely due to their age difference, then moved Salvador for a useful hit man. Janssen will do a fine job in his role and become a fan favorite. |

I need a free agent update. Are the Rams coming close on offers and just not getting the nod or what? It seems like a lot of guys never make it past their first trip. So, do you see any signings probable? It would seem that a bunch of fans (or perhaps crazy dillusional message board posters) thought we were somehow going to pick up Samuel, Faneca, Smith, and Moss; now you'd think it was the end of the world that we didn't. All I know is that as bad as this team was last year, talent was not the biggest issue. We had tons injuries and more importantly horrible coaching schemes. | Jeff Gordon: I repeatedly warned Rams fans not to expect big free-agent scores. A lot of players were going to stay put (Lance Briggs!) and others were going to look for better situations (Samuel, Faneca. That said, the Rams will end up with more than an upgrade at kicker. There are still some solid possibilities out there. |

Jeff Gordon: Polak, just back from the injured list, is getting a look now. He is a big part of the future, as is Wagner. Perhaps Woywitka and Walker will stick around as well.

Why are the Rams trying to snow ball the fans into thinking they are making any of the right moves? They let go Isaac Bruce and cleared up all this cap space with other moves and they only thing they have done is get a kicker! They are trying to get us to buying into Bennett replacing Bruce. Anyone that saw the Rams last year knows Bennett was the biggest bust and moronic move the Rams have made since they came to St. Louis. I know Bruce was getting a little long in the tooth but he is 3 times better than Bennett ever will be. We already needed DE, LB and OL but now we need another wide receiver. There are not really any other free agents out there worth looking at and now management seems to have come to depend on the draft to be our savior. Even if they do sign any of the remaining free agents they are not really any better than we have now. The way most knowledgable football fans will have to look at it is the Rams are going to stink for the next 2 or 3 years because they are to cheap to spend money on free agents. Here we are 20 million under the cap and have not done a thing while other teams are making moves to improve themselves while we take 3 steps backwards! I am trying not to complain but BONEHEAD moves frustrate the heck out of us die hard Rams fans with nothing to look forward to but losing. |

Tackleberry: I have to imagine you will get flooded with questions/rants regarding the Rams inaction this weekend, as many players that were supposed "targets" seem to be headed elsewhere. It is odd to watch it all unfold especially with the numerous holes to fill.
When you look at our defense, it leaves you wondering "where are the playmakers?" Our secondary is second-rate, without any hint of an all-pro (sorry Atogowe,let's see 2008 before we cement him as a player). Witherspoon is the only decent backer we have, Pisa & Chillar make a lot of tackles but not a lot of plays. But everyone knows with our D-Line there were plenty of tackling opportunities, so ho hum.
I'll take health and maybe a vertical threat on offense, but where is the impact player on D? Please don't respond with Leonard Little, seriously, please don't. |
| Jeff Gordon: I expect the Rams to draft an impact defender in the first round. Also, Carriker and Ryan must make strides, along with Atogwe. The defense does need a big hitting safety and/or a big-hitting inside linebacker. Again, cornerback remains an issue. Wade didn't progress well last season as a rookie. Hill is OK, but right now the team has a lot riding on Brown staying healthy and staying out of trouble. |

I think he has been a very good receiver at times, but also they ignored some of the younger prospects for a guy who was Wilkins' favorite holder. If the Rams sign Jacob Bell, would the plan be to move Mark Setterstrom to center? Bell is a relatively light, athletic lineman. Linehan likes em massive. Will Linehan give Saunders anything he wants, even when it goes against the grain? Saunders likes his linemen to be good pass blockers first. Would this cause the run blocking to suffer? That didn't seem to be the case in KC. Thanks. |
Jeff Gordon: The Chiefs had exceptional offensive linemen. Assembling such a group here would be tough. Setterstrom could become an option at center, although the team is trying to add another veteran at that spot.
Will the Rams adjust their "mauler" emphasis on the offensive line? Perhaps, because Saunders does have some freedom here. |

Jeff Gordon: The Rams front office felt that $3 million was sufficient for a receiver at Ike's career point. It wasn't like the franchise was THAT desperate to create $2 million more under the cap.
As for Bulger, his turn to redo his deal could come in time. |

| Faris Chehabi: I have been thinking about the Rams in 2008 and I think what I came up with makes perfect sense. I say that we switch to a 3-4 defense and put Carriker and Little at the ends and Glover in the middle which means we don't draft Chris Long. Then for our linebackers we add Calvin Pace who is great in the 3-4 and won't be too expensive then Witherspoon beside him, sign Dan Morgan which won't be expensive at all and put him in the middle next to Witherspoon, and at the end put Tinoisomia. That defense would be so good and we would get many sacks. Then for the draft, we get Jake Long. We also would sign Jacob Bell who won't be that much money. Then that offensive line would be very good with Pace and Long at tackle. Then 2nd round maybe you draft Sam Baker at center or just try out the many options we have. We can also draft a Linebacker with our 2nd round. It makes perfect sense to me. What do you think? |
| Jeff Gordon: Ryan would play the middle in that scenario. I'm not sure about Little as a 3-4 defensive end. Carriker would be OK in that role, but not a big playmaker. As you're making a lot of assumptions about the cost and available of linebackers capable of playing this scheme. |

Jeff Gordon: The issue isn't the lost players. The issue is injured pitching. The Cards could have an elite rotation during the second half of the season. But how do they survive the first half?

Jeff Gordon: You are right about "age over performance" in the defensive movement. Fans assume the Blues could have gotten a bunch for Jackman -- but other teams DO scout this team. The offers weren't great. So the Blues are betting that Jackman will come around now that his future is settled.
As for adding more picks, they don't have much to trade. |

| Jeff Gordon: The Jets are pushing hard for Woody -- and they appear to have first crack. As for WR, there will be lots of options to beef up the unit behind Holt, Bennett and Stanley. What happens in free agency will dictate what the Rams do later in the draft. |

I think the Rams have been too passive in free agency so far. I'm not saying they should have given the kind of money Brian Kelly got in Oakland or Asante Samuel in Philly but there were definately deals that could have been made which would have improved the defensive line which really needs a run stopper. They wanted Kris Jenkins last year and could have had him for a 3rd and 5th round pick. Shaun Rogers the same thing. I know we have alot of holes to fill but I think we needed to get more involved. I see lots of Mike Martz in Andy Murray- I can see some of the genius, but... Maybe different assistants can round out his game?
I just don't understand the EJ- Woywitka pairing, using Eric Brewer on the powerplay (as good as a defensive force he is, he is not a pp guy- his numbers were way down on the pp under Kitchen, also- which created an opportunity for both Wideman and Dallman), using man to man coverage in the defensive zone, and the hero worship of Jamal by the coaching staff. |
Jeff Gordon: Mayers does his job. He checks, uses his speed to advance the puck and he hits. The staff works collectively on defensive zone coverage and the power play. We have seen some weird combos as the staff searched for workable pairings. Going forward, this will be a big issue. Does Walker stay/ What about Woywikta? Are Wagner and Polak both in the mix for next year? Will McKee move on?

And why isn't living with Nelson Ayotte preventing these situations about Perron? Please get someone to kill this teenage rebellion before he turns 21. |
Jeff Gordon: Perron will figure it out. But I'm guessing that he could spend some time in Peoria next year first.
As for the team missing the playoffs, that will be disappointing. But the team is on the right course overall. Several veterans are likely to move on as the team continues to stress long-term player development. |

I think Josh Brown is a good signing, paying him too much but his departure weakens the Seahwawks further so it's money well spent. We need to sign a couple more o-linemen before the end of free agency...other than the Titans' guard are there any other names being linked to us?
I have to say that I thought it was disgraceful the way Isaac was released. He's given his heart and soul for the Franchise and had the right to retire a Ram. We cut him for $2 million; money I don't see being invested in our team. He signed a 2 year $6 million contract in San Francisco which confirms he didn't leave because of money, instead it must have been the lack of respect that was shown to him from the organisation by releasing him twice in as many years. It's sad that his tenure as a Ram ended like this.

Jeff Gordon: Fans get gearing up for free agency. In this corner of cyberspace, we never believed the Rams would go crazy in the marketplace. Who wants to come to a 3-13 team and play for a coach in the final year of his contract?
The Rams do have tons of needs, which is why spending for the sake of it isn't smart. The team was willing to pay up for Faneca, but he preferred New York.

Instead they brought in Drew Bennett and Randy McMicheals, both of which aren't worth what they are being paid. Now with the release of Isaac Bruce the receiving corp is thin at best. I can guarantee you that it will be another bleak year for the Rams. I guess they will waste their #2 pick in the draft for another running back or possibly an undersized cornerback. Zygmunt and Shaw turned the franchise around before, so perhaps they can do it again. Bringing in Saunders and Devaney were big steps in the right direction. |

| Jeff Gordon: That is overly optimistic. There is power, for sure. I see Izturis starting at short and not doing much to excite us offensively. Kennedy could have a bounce-back year. Duncan will break out. Ankiel will tear up the ball in spurts. Rasmus could be the leadoff guy by mid-year, but this will still be a pretty stationary team. |

| Jeff Gordon: I'd worry about Vrbata being a one-hit wonder. He is a solid supporting cast guy, but I wouldn't pay him based on this season. He has bounced around too much for that. But I do think another mid-level scorer is needed, especially in that age bracket. |

| sean: i watched tape of allot of antonio pittmans runs last year, and they lacked the vision he had in college. he seems to run stright forward, and if theres a hole, so be it. he had maybe 3 instinctive runs all year--why is he running so tight, if he relaxes hes a playmaker, who can help pittman be instinctive again? |
Jeff Gordon: Running backs need work to find their rhythm. He had to pick up the offense on the fly and play as a fill-in behind a makeshift offensive line.
Pittman might have been a great pickup for the Rams. So even in this deep RB draft, they may not take another one. |

- Chris Long will probably go #1
- We don't have a need for Matt Ryan or McFadden
- Glen Dorsey is rumored to be damaged goods, and DT is actually a strength now so he doesn't fit a need (neither does Ellis)
- If we sign a G and C in FA, Jake Long doesn't seem to fit (unless we trade Barron...hmmm...)
- Vernon Gholston seems too high for #2 (not to me, I'd take him, but the draft "experts" seem to think so)
- There doesn't seem to be many players that teams want to trade up for

Jeff Gordon: The Rams will get offers at No. 2 if Chris Long goes No. 1, leaving Ryan and McFadden there along with Dorsey. As for Dorsey being damaged, we'll see. He has some stress fracture issues earlier in his career. The Rams know about defensive tackles with chronic injuries, eh?

Jeff Gordon: To get Bay, you would have to trade good young pitching and one of the top young outfielders. Duncan and Ankiel are ready now. Rasmus will be the CF at some point this season. There is your '08 outfield, with Schumaker, Ludwick, Barton and Gonzalez (a short-term guy if ever there was one) fighting it out for jobs.
There is plenty of young pitching, too, with several prospects (Perez, Mortensen, Garcia) moving onto the front burner at the same time. |

AM claims the blues will play hard-which they do. Do you want to work hard and stupid or do you want to work hard and smart. Dump and chase with a little forecheck is not playing smart hockey. It can generate a ton of SHOTS but what about SCORING CHANCES. Go ahead a watch any other NHL team you will not see them getting to centerline a dumping the puck to create scoring chances. THIS SYSTEM IS OUTDATED LIKE AM. I like the coach but if you could let me know if higher up's have any plans to bring in any imagination or creativity in the off season. thanks Gordo |
Jeff Gordon: Personnel and chemistry mean more systems.
Next year, when Erik Johnson is rushing the puck with confidence and Wagner is making terrific outlet passes, the Blues will be able to generate more speed and creativity on the rush. Also, both those young D will be able to join the rush. That component is missing from the current team.
Also, another let offensive center would allow the Blues to carry the puck into the offensive zone more often. You can't expect Ryan Johnson to serve as a No. 1 or No. 2 center.
The Blues could use a bit more heft up front, too. McDonald, Kariya and Boyes can stake, but aren't so good at breaking tackles. Backes and Stempniak need to get into the scoring areas and cause more havoc. |

Jeff Gordon: To go after Scott's money, the team would have had to await the outcome of his legal situation. A good lawyer could press for a jury trial and make that take all summer. The Cards didn't want to deal with all that.

I was interested to hear what kind of a leash, if any, that Andy Murray has for the rest of the year. I know that he's done a great job in turning this team around, but with 17 games left, it's starting to look like this team is going to have trouble scoring 20 goals for the rest of the year. Just like any Blues fan, I hope that they will turn it around tomorrow night. This team, however, is looking as bad right now as it has in the past three years and with a lot more talent. Pretty soon they've got to look at the coach. He continues to juggle lines every game in a sport where chemisty is a very important part. This "balanced line" stuff is bogus. You need to put your scorers and playmakers together and your energy guys and enforcers together. Yet, Mayers and Ryan Johnson continue to find themselves on scoring lines while Boyes, Stempniak and Perron are on checking lines. I don't think that Andy Murray is the guy to bring us to the next level. He's done a great job until now, but this team is good enough to be a playoff team right now, maybe not a cup contender, but they should be in the playoffs.

| Jeff Gordon: Going from dead last in the NHL to 95 or 96 points is quite a journey. The Blues are falling short this year, but overall progress is good. This team just needs to cycle out more veterans, cycle in more young players and keep going. The Blues hoped that McKee, Rucinsky and others could help this team contend while it was still building, but that is tough to pull off. |

| Jeff Gordon: Fry is iffy. A lot to prove there. I liked Romberg well enough -- he could be a good value guy. I'd rather move Setterstrom to center if another guard signed, since Richie can use his aggressiveness better at guard. |

| Mike: Someone posted about Maurice Williams being available, and I'm confounded why someone like this isn't brought in for a closer look. Former 2nd round pick, whose played og and tackle, and seems to have performed very well. I bet he signs a more reasonable contract than Bell and seems about as good and as versatile. Shouldn't there be competition in FA signings as well. Also, are there any plans to bring back R. Smith? If not are the Rams looking at lb depth, as with Pisa's tenuous health, seems that there a little thin. Gabriel to Snow: I am so sorry to see Ike go, but I think he really wanted to reunite with Mad Mike. The numbers he should garner if he stays healthy will put him in good HOF position, and I'm sure he will enter as a Ram.
It's obviously make or break for Drew Bennett, as it should be.
I have 4 questions if you don't mind.
1. If we draft a DT but get no DE help, will Carriker be moved to end?
2. Do you think any college player is worth $30 mil. guaranteed? I don't. I hope we trade down & land 5 or 6 of the first 100 picks, rather than the 4 we stand at now. Your thoughts?
3. Any word on WR free agent possibilities? I think Javon Walker & Bryant Johnson are very attractive.
4. Finally, I love the Josh Brown signing. I am also happy we haven't thrown stupid money at marginal players. How much of our lack of free agent signings is good fiscal responsibility & how much is players avoiding the Rams?

Jeff Gordon: Carriker could move to end, or to a swing role. Good question about the guaranteed money to high picks, because that is silly. Many free agent wide receivers hit the market - and you mentioned two good ones.
Some players won't come to a 3-13 team with a lame duck coach. As for the Rams, they won't dramatically overpay other players when they need to get Atogwe and Jackson locked in. |

| RamFanInPA: The Rams are going to have to pay a great deal of money to the #2 pick no matter who it is. But, everything considered, I feel T Jake Long is the safest pick. I feel he has the least bust potential of the guys in the top 5. What are your feelings about the #2 pick? Thanks. |

In regards to Pujols' elbow...is surgery a matter of time or is there a chance that he will never have to get it. Does it have any possibility of self healing. I hate to say it but if surgery has to happen I would rather lose Pujols this year then next year when we should have an extremely strong ball club. At least if we choose to have surgery rather than waiting untill it blows out, we can plan for it. |
| Jeff Gordon: There is some damage there. At some point, it will needed fixing. The ideal time to fix would have been last September, once the team went under. Then the 2008 could have been the Rehab Season -- get it all over with at once. |

| Rich: Last year during spring training, it seemed that the Post-Dispatch avoided publishing individual Cardinal player stats during spring training. I understand that these stats may be less revealing than they seem because of B-games and such. But individual player stats are the only thing that counts to a fan trying to come to some independent appraisal of management's decisions. Is it ridiculously conspiratorial of me to assume that the Post is bowing to LaRussa, who would certainly prefer that stats not appear so he can face less resistance to his brilliant decisions, like his plan to keep Bobby Bonilla and send Pujols down to the minors? If that's not the explanation, why does the Post not serve us better with an ample presentation of player stats during spring training? |

You know, with all the changes done until now, Linehan is yet to participate in something, and if he is waiting to the start of the season to make decisions on the field (that he won't do by himself neither), than why have him? Sincerely, I will always be a Ram fan, I am one since 1979, and whith these slow start on free agency it is clear that all our good expectations are tu be put on the fridge for a long time.
That being said, I am not going to ask you to support my comments. Please just evaluate in a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is the best and 1 is the worst.

What's going on with the Blues? When Murray was hired we saw that initial bump in level of play but after a few months it seems that the intensity is gone. I question how the power play is being run. It's the same thing every single time. Other teams realize this, the Blues refuse to shoot the puck and put a man in front of the net. Should Murray be concerned that his coaching days are numbered? I think the players are starting to tune him out. |
| Jeff Gordon: It's a little early to run off Murray. And some of the lagging veterans are headed our the door anyway, as part of the ongoing youth movement. The power play is a mystery. Some of that creativity has to come from McDonald and Kariya doing special things with the puck. And some of that has to come from improved play on the point. The Blues need to upgrade there. |

| Ken: I can't believe the Rams will actaully sign Trent Green as a backup Quarterback since he is only one play away from another end of season and end of his career concussion. And even if they do, it shows how pathetic the the rams are. So let us assume they don't do that; Who might we get at quarterback and who might we draft in the later rounds and doesn't this make Offensive line a huge priority to protect Mark Bulger. And by the way who will be the other recievers after Tory Holt and Drew Bennett, now that Bruce has left this sinking ship. What are our chances of drafting Will Franklin from U of Mo. |

| George: Hey Gordo....thanks for taking our questions. I am a huge hockey fan and will be the first to admit, I am not an expert regarding the techniques of the game. After watching the Blues all year, it seems we rushed into the zone, run behind the other teams net and start cycling the puck. If this was working, fine, but is there something I am missing? Watching other teams play, it seems they come across the blue line w/ people in position for better scoring opportunities other than cycling hoping to get a shot off. Is there any light you could shed on our philosophy w/ this? Is that the system? Appreciate your time and hockey lesson. |
Jeff Gordon: Most teams want to generate chances on the rush AND sustain pressure down low by cycling the puck. These are not mutually exclusive philosophies.
They Blues struggle to finish either every which way -- on the rush, while cycling, on the power play or while shorthanded. |

| Mike: Jeff, what are your thoughts on Antonio Smith of the Cards? I remember asking you previously about Pace and you didn't think much of him as game changer, so I'm not optimistic about Smith. Understanding the limited funds and other needs, Smith looks to be a nice mix of youth, expense and production...had 5.5 sacks in limited action, which is only one behind Pace, who appears to be on the verge of 20 mill in guarantees. Can you plant one in the suggestion box at Rams park. I'm from AZ and the Cards are very much hoping that Smith goes unnoticed! |

| Jeff Gordon: He worked in relief last season while continuing his recovery from elbow surgery. But he has the pitch assortment to start -- and that may be his ticket to the bigs eventually. He reached Class AA Springfield last year and could move onto the front burner this spring. |

| Jeff Gordon: Garcia is more likely to start in the Springfield rotation and try to work his way up to Memphis. The Cards have plenty of depth for the LH relief role, even if Tyler Johnson goes down with shoulder problems. |

| Bill: Jeff, back in October, I was very confident about the Blues future. Now, not so much. We need a playmaking center badly, it's almost unfair to put criticism on the front line scorers because you basically got 6 wingers on the top 2 lines. We really need a top line center and a decent #2 Center as well. Kinda like the old Oates and Zezel combo we once had. But how the heck are they going to come up with that? Plus we need an offensive defensemen very badly as well. I'm not sure it was worth spending that kind of money on Barrett Jackman when we definitely need to go out in free agency and address these other needs. (I won't even get into the goaltending picture) Plus I wasn't happy with Larry Pleau's answer on the day of the trade for Janssen when he defended opting for Janssen over a 3rd round draft choice for Salvador. He said it takes 4 or 5 years to see that player versus getting someone like Janssen who can play right now. First off the Blues are all about getting picks and continuing to build for the future ( and this yr's draft is deep ) and then he goes and makes a comment like that? I could tolerate his comment if it was a guy who could muster 15 goals, but for Janssen? Just cause he's a St Louis kid? Give me a break. Someone should tell Larry about the Scott Cooper experiment..........Bad Trade and a bad answer by Pleau. Jeff, what about the center icemen, what do you think the Blues can do to address this? thanks |
Jeff Gordon: Berglund will be one of the cornerstones at center, but perhaps in 2010. So there IS a need there. Re-signing Jackman was an iffy call, given his play this year. But spending $3 million plus on Salvador would have been iffy too, given all the young D the team has. As for Janssen, I'll take him instead of a third-round pick. Why wait three or four years for that payoff? The Blues have plenty of prospects coming.
