| karmon: Good afternoon Gordo and thanks for keeping us informed. I have two questions. 1. If you have been at ST have you seen anyone that you see as a darkhorse that might surprise us that hasn't been on the radar so to speak. 2. The signing of the Navy pitcher Harris, In you opinion is that a good singing. I know it appears he has the talent to pursue him but since he has to serve out his military obligation (5 yrs) will he really be able to come back at that level. He will be 28 yrs old and really starting from scratch. That seems to be a long shot to me. I guess the upside is that he isn't costing a lot of money now. What is your opinion. |
Jeff Gordon: Justin Fiske, one of the extra lefty arms in camp, looked strong Sunday. He has an interesting delivery that ought to be tough on lefties. Whether he can get anywhere near the big leagues this year, we'll see.
The Navy pitcher is a physical specimen. If he can find the time to keep training and get some pitching in here and there, he will be worth a look down the road. |
|
Ray: Hey Jeff:
Great signing by the Rams. Brown will anchor our O-line. I am now on board the Curry bandwagon. I was on Crabtree, but after the combine I am now sold on Curry. With the No. 2 pick I believe BPA is the best strategy. There is no clear, dominant OT in this draft. Look what has happened when we picked for need (see Tye Hill, Carriker). And recall we selected Steven Jackson at No. 24, when we really didnt have an urgent "need" for a RB, but we took him becaused he was just too good to pass up. If Detroit does not select Curry, the Rams need to grab him. Then we either grab the best Tackle that slips, or grab one of the WR that slips into Round 2 (Nicks, Heyward-Bey, Britt). Thanks for your time, your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: There is much love for Curry at Rams Park. He could play inside or outside, which would allow the new staff to find the best way to use Witherspoon. You are right about the tackles; as this thing plays out, it seems less likely that one of this guys will be worth the second overall pick. |
|
BrotherBri: Gordo, thanks for all you do for all of us. We do appreciate you.
Blues: Like many on this site, I have a romantic streak, one that would love to see Chris Pronger return to St. Louis to (a) take us to the playoffs this year, and (b) stay here for the rest of his career. Given that the Ducks want to drop salary, is there any way that McKee, Pietrangelo and a pick other than our first rounder could get Prongs back here?
Cards: Carpenter's outing certainly has to give us hope, as does Mather's play at 3B thus far. Assuming those two solve some of our problems, we're almost set. That same romantic streak of mine would love to see Mark Buerhle play for his hometown team. Is there any chance of sending Duncan, Pineiro and some prospects (or the "future considerations" card, meaning Wallace when he is available to be traded) to get Buerhle here? Or would you guess that a Manny-less Dodgers, offering us a reliever of value, would be the best we could hope for in exchange for Duncan?
Rams: Way to go, Billy!! Brown is a HUGE step in the right direction. And if Butler and Bartell join us, we have another great step. Lots of questions left before we leave the free agent season -- do we cut McMichael, Becht, Pisa, Hall, Leonard, or even Draft for cap savings? And if we did, who would be our next target -- a backup QB like Carr? Chris Canty to beef up the D-line? Or maybe Khalif Barnes to replace Pace and/or Barron? |
Jeff Gordon: The Pronger stuff is interesting, but not if it also includes David Perron. This team needs more offensive firepower for the future, not less. Moving Pietrangelo is OK because there are so many other young D.
We got a lot of queries about Buehrle. With the Cards able to take on salary -- we didn't say willing -- that sort of deal could make sense. It would balance up the rotation nicely.
The Rams have upgraded nicely over Leckey, although tackle remains a more glaring need long-term. As for cap savings, I'm a huge McMichael fan. Don't cut him! Hall was OK last year, especially after he moved inside successfully. Draft is fine. |
|
| Tackleberry: Obviously Spagnuolo had multiple chances to see Lito Sheppard in the NFC East, so we can only assume with that asking price he would have made a push if he thought Sheppard was worthwhile. That being said, if the Rams don't get a deal done with Bartell, where does that leave them? Fans often point to the longtime void left at linebacker by Fletcher's exit, but when was the last time this team had a Pro Bowl cornerback? |
| Jeff Gordon: Bartell has great timing. He came free at a time when FA cornerbacks were scarce. Should the Rams overpay to keep him? That is a tough one. Ron is a solid player, but I'm not sure he deserves massive money. This team has so many needs . . . |
|
drelboc: Hey Gordo;
When did you arrive in Jupiter? Have you had a chance to see any Spring Training games yet? What are you hearing and how does that compare to what you are seeing? Anything there to pass that is of baseball interest?
Thanks Jeff! |
Jeff Gordon: Saw them play Sunday. Tough day for Skip, but he has great work ethic and a great attitude. He'll keep working through this.
Overall, this is a quiet camp. Most of the questions have already been answered. Barton made the OF battle more interesting with his two-homer, 6 RBI game, but Rasmus will get every chance to hit his way out of his early funk.
Pineiro seems to be getting over Oquendo's snub. But that will be worth keeping an eye on. |
|
| BillP: If the Blues do to trade Perron for Pronger, at 34, how much left do you think Pronger has to offer. You think he can play at a high level for another 4 years? Also if the Blues go this route, do you get the feeling that the Blues next move would involve Pietrangelo? Thanks |
Jeff Gordon: Chris would be fine for four more years. The game comes pretty easy to him, with his size, range and skating stride.
But trading Perron . . . bad idea. The kid has star potential. The Blues have missed on those type of players again and again -- including Filatov, who went to the Jackets. The team already moved Stempniak to get Colaiacovo. And the team already threw long-term dollars at Brewer and Jackman. And the already has Johnson, Polak, Pietrangelo and Cole stacked up for years to come. |
|
| BillP: Any chance the Blues may pull a surpise and make a pitch for Backstrom in Minnesota? |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd rather see that move -- a trade plus a contract extension -- than a big investment in a twilight-era Pronger. Bishop's play at Peoria this year left the door open for a big goaltender move. Mason has been great the last two months, but he is deep into his career. |
|
| BillP: Hey Jeff, you are right, Kessel out of Boston would be a hugh pickup. Any chance the Blues can swing that? Last I heard was a rumor of Kessel for Pronger, but Boston is feeling like that may be too much to sacrafice. It looks like Boston is looking for the right veteran defenseman in return and that may leave us out of the picture, but then again Kessel has been cold lately so maybe the Blues can still catch them at the right time and offer someone like Pietrangelo like you had said earlier? Got any feeling if the Blues are looking into this? Thanks and Have a good week! |
| Jeff Gordon: Getting Kessel would be difficult, admittedly. Boston wants to win now. If the Bruins deal Phil this season, then it would have to be a Pronger type. If this happened down the road, then perhaps the Blues could get involved. |
|
Fresno Ram Fan: Hey Gordo,
Please tell me the Rams are going to sign another FA? Have you heard anything regarding Leonard Weaver or if the Rams are even interested? How about James Butler? Is he or isnt he going to be a Ram? Thanx |
| Jeff Gordon: Too bad the Rams didn't lock up Butler on his visit, but they apparently didn't get close. Their approach will be dictated by their ability or inability to move Pace and Holt in deals. |
|
FloTrain: Honestly, I didn't expect MU to win but would've liked a better showing.... That was brutal! But the rest of the way they will NOT face an environment like that in enemy territory... Just A&M on the road and conference and NCAA tourneys. So, brush that off (as HARD as that will be) and I think they'll be good. CMA will have them ready to rock on Wednesday and you know Carroll and Lyons will be going gangbusters once both tournaments start....
My question, K-State and Illinois were one thing to brush aside but considering ALL the circumstances in this game today, how hard is it going to be to ease the psyche of the players? Also, I know you're probably going to answer this a hundred times today and even more later but realistically, what are the chances CMA leaves? That would hurt..... |
Jeff Gordon: Anderson's wife seems to be comfy in Columbia, according to reports, so that helps. He has a better chance to build Sweet 16 teams here than at places like Alabama, so that helps.
As for the Tigers, they were lucky to survive a terrible first half against KU at home. The Jayhawks could have buried them in Columbia. That happens.
This beating could refocus the team for the games ahead. I don't think those guys have fragile confidence. This ought to toughen them up a bit. |
|
| Scott: Who are the LHP's going to be? Ostlund can't get anyone out. Ring and Manning have both been inconsistant. Miller seems to be the only lock but obviously we need more than one reliable LHP. Ohman? |
| Jeff Gordon: We keep pitching that, but so far we can't get Mozeliak to bite. |
|
Joe Stafford: Hello Jeff.
I want to be the first to personally thank Billy Devaney and Steve Spaguolo for doing the best thing for this team by cutting Loserhan's first class bust Drew Bennett! Finally some accountability at Rams Park. Who would have thunk it! |
| Jeff Gordon: Addition by subtraction. |
|
Ed in Vancouver: HELLO GORDO,
Who do you think would be targets for the Rams in free angency at the Middle linebacker position??? |
| Jeff Gordon: Not much there in free agency, which is why Curry is an appealing pick. |
|
Ed in Vancouver: HELLO GORDO,
I have a feeling in the second or third wave of free agency they will sign a 'new' starting right tackle, and gladly use Alex Baron as the 3rd OT.
Reason being in two folds A) power running teams gotta be able to run (normally to the right side of the OL) B) Baron isn't a good run block PERIOD.
Your Thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: With Pace apparently on the trade block, left tackle is a bigger concern. Barron could move there, but then it would still be a concern. There are a few decent tackles out there left in free agency and there many draft candidates. Expect change. |
|
| ram4life: Gordo, who do you think we take no. 2 overall? I hoping and praying its Curry. |
| Jeff Gordon: Right now he is the hot guy at Rams Park. Don't rule out Crabtree, despite the injury. But that might only happen with a trade down. |
|
| gerald: it seems to me that the rams are wasting time waiting for teams to trade for(holt and pace) when they should release them to clear cap space and try and sign some f.a. do u see it that way |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams weren't nearly as ambitious in free agency as fans wanted them to be. They made a big score for the O-line and would like to do the same at safety. But they don't want to just whack Pace and Holt without a return. Pace, in particular, could still be a difference maker here. If they can add picks and gain space at the same time, that makes sense. |
|
bss212s: I have this random question that I was curious about.
In the NFL is it possible for a team to win their division by going 6-10?
For example: The Rams beat SF twice, Seattle twice, and Arizona twice. Would they then be undefeated in their division and make the playoffs? Or would even though they beat all the division teams, they would lose out to a team that they beat who won more non division games? |
| Jeff Gordon: The division team with the best overall record would win the division and make the playoffs. |
|
Ed in Vancouver VCR: GORDO,
Do you forsee Pisa being cut??? If cutting Pisa HELPS keep Bartell they that is a no brainer, agree??? |
Jeff Gordon: Even Pisa's exit wouldn't guarantee Bartell's return -- since he could still get a totally out-of-whack contract elsewhere.
He is a good player, but the Rams went 5-27 with him the last two years. They could live without him, if the dollars got stupid. Too many other needs to fill! |
|
Rich: Good morning Gordo,
Regarding the on-going negoiations with Butler and Bartell, at what point do you see the Rams going in another direction?
Personally, I can't see them waiting much longer on either of them considering the ever dwindling number of starter quality DBs on the market. |
| Jeff Gordon: Billy and Spags have their own evaluation of what's left on the market. Billy weighs that against the dollars being asked for. It is a day-to-day process. |
|
| magiardino: Gordo, I don't understand why the Rams are so adamant about trading or releasing Orlando Pace. I read where the Rams don't believe he is a dominant blocker anymore, but I also remember reading that he was our best offensive lineman last year, and he got better as the year went on. Why don't the Rams keep him this year and sign Curry or BJ Raji with the second pick? This run-stuffing DT or LB will instantly give the Rams defense the stud/credibility/personnel they need. I would hate to see the Rams draft an offensive tackle who is not worthy of that #2 pick. We need an impact player at that #2 pick. And we need one more year out of the Big O. Thanks! |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams could move Pace and take something other than a tackle at No. 2. Right now, in fact, I'd be shocked if they took a tackle No. 2. |
|
Rambeast: How's it going jeff, I got a couple questions.
First why have the Rams not contacted Sean Jones, he seems to be the better SS between him and Butler and yet they are waiting long and hard for Butler. I know Butler played with Spags but Jones is a better all around safety, and Butler seems to be asking for too much.
Also why don't we just keep Big O? He only counts 6.5 mil against the cap, and he still plays at an elite level when healthy. Only 2.5 sacks allowed in 14 starts. we are gonna have to pay that much or more just to replace him. It seems like trading or releasing him would be counter productive. Torry is a different story. |
| Jeff Gordon: If the Rams can't get a decent pick for Pace -- and spend the money gained very well -- then the Big O may return. It's a two-part deal: Getting ax extra pick to use and extra money to spend. The Rams would like to add lots of solid players this offseason. They aren't looking to hit many home runs. |
|
netboy65: Hey Gordo,
Please tell me the Blues will just stand pat at the deadline. Personally I don't think that we will get enough for Walt to make it worthwhile, i.e. he's more valuable to us than what we would get in return. Plus the rumors involving Pronger are utterly ridiculous!! Why trade our future for a guy who's best days are most likely behind him? This team is on an incredible roll, let's not mess with it. |
Jeff Gordon: Agreed. Stay the course with the kids on hand and finish out with Walt. I'd only move Tkachuk for a first-round pick.
Pronger could help this team, of course, but the Blues should focus on developing Polak, Cole, Johnson, Pietrangelo, Strachan, Junland, Fairchild, et al. |
|
Zac, TN: Gordo,
I am an Ankiel fan and reaaly love that he is a Cardinal. I have a problem with his contract and what might end killing the Cardinals. He has one year left on his contract and his agent is Scott Boras. Ankiel is goning to want a high contract next season no matter the performance he gives this season. Would the smart thing to do is to trade him and pick up some pitching? I love his glove and bat, but sometimes you gotta go whats best for the franchise don't you think? Ludwick could also be tradebait don't you think? Thanks gordo! |
| Jeff Gordon: Trading Ludwick, a moderately priced RH slugger and good outfielder, would be silly. As for Ankiel, I've changed my mind. Keep him, play him, let him go crazy and try to win. If the team can re-sign him, great, but otherwise take the free-agent compensation pick and spend the money on pitching. |
|
| RJ: Gordo: What is your opinion of the signing of Brown to play center. Do you think he can help make a more disciplined player out of Incognito? |
Jeff Gordon: Adding a Pro Bowl type guy the middle ought to make the whole group better. But the need to get stronger at tackle is still glaring.
Richie is Richie. Moving him to center might have settled him some, but that won't happen now . . . |
|
| Big Thirsty: WHAT IS THE FEELING AROUND RAMS PARK ABOUT MICHEAL CRABTREE |
| Jeff Gordon: Billy likes him. He doesn't need to seem him run at his pro day to draft him. Billy is more concerned about Michael being ready for all the off-season work, should the Rams take him. |
|
| Big Thirsty: DO RAMS REALIZE THAT THEY CANT WAIT FOR EVER ON THESE TWO GUYS OR THEY WILL MISS OUT ON DWINDILING FREE AGENT GROUP. BUTLER IS REPRESENTED BY THE POSTEN BROTHERS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! |
| Jeff Gordon: If he doesn't sign, he doesn't sign. The Rams are watching the market closely, watching to see if the right player shows at the right price. |
|
| Big Thirsty: WHY DONT THE RAMS TAKE A LOOK AT RAY LEWIS. I MEAN THE LEADERSHIP ALONE WOULD BE WORTH IT. THE RAMS WILL HAVE A YOUNG NEW TEAM AND RAY IN THE MIDDLE WILL BE A FAR BETTER OPTION THEN ANY ONE ELSE THEY CAN GET. WE BASICALLY HAVE 1 LINEBACKER WORTH KEEPING I MEAN THATS HARSH TO SAY BUT WE ALL KNOW ITS THE TRUTH.ARE THEY EVEN LOOKING AT ANY OTHER LINEBACKERS IN FREE AGENCY. MIKE PETERSON MAYBE? |
| Jeff Gordon: He is a twilight player demanding huge money. He is better suited to help a contender win a Super Bowl than a rebuilding team. |
|
| Big Thirsty: DO THE RAMS PLAN ON DRAFTING A QB, SINCE THERE IS A LACK OF INTEREST FROM THEM IN TERMS OF FREE AGENT POSSIBILITY'S. WILL THE STONGLY CONSIDER MATT STAFFORD OR MARK SANCHEZ |
| Jeff Gordon: They will not strong consider either QB. Later, yes, they could add somebody. |
|
TD51: I'm sure that updates will come as avail on Bartell & Butler. What do you think the odds are we sign Bartell? Butler?
Also, w/ noting that Garcia is a no go, are you aware of any word within the team that they have someone on the radar? And why not bring in Garcia, he is one of the better players out there avail to step in if Bulger still struggles.
Thanks! |
| Jeff Gordon: Interesting that the Rams want a pure back-up for Bulger, not a challenger. Jeff would not have fit that mold in any way. Most of the guys available have some upside . . . but most will also need some rebuilding. |
|
| Big Thirsty: WHO ARE THE RAMS LOOKING AT FOR A NUMBER 2 RUNNING BACK. WHAT ARE THOUGHTS ON CEDRIC BENSON |
| Jeff Gordon: An, Cedric the Entertainer. He finally looked like a possible No. 1 last year. Interesting guy. Tough to say what his financial clout is right now. |
|
| Dave C: Jim , now that Kitna has been traded from Detroit,do you feel that Detroit has tipped their hand a will draft a QB with the #1 pick?If that's the case, what do you place the Rams chances at taking Curry #2?Any chance the we bring in Dre'Bly for a look ? |
Jeff Gordon: The Rams would love to see Detroit go for Stafford and Sanchez and allow them to decide on Curry.
Bly is an interesting guy. He's earned big money in his career, but's tougher to set a value for him now. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
So far, I am impressed by 4 guys that I thought had NO chance of making the team coming into ST...Tyler Greene, Brian Barton, Jon Jay and Jarrett Hoffpauir. I understand it is only March 2, and the pitching will only get tougher by the end of the month.
I have to believe that Duncan and Rasmus would have to have unforgiveable springs to even consider giving Barton or Jay a chance. I could see Barton sticking if Mather wins the starting 3B/Utility role, however.
If Schumaker turns out to be a below average 2B, do you think this team is willing to exchange bad defense at second for a known leadoff quantity? If Skip takes a nose dive, do T. Greene or Hoffpauir have any hope at second/leadoff, or are they merely waiting for their ticket back to the minors? |
| Jeff Gordon: Jay and Greene have made huge impressions. Both could be with the team at some point this season. Maybe Barton starts with the team if Mather plays third, Schumaker plays second and the team goes with five other outfielders. Right-handed bats have value and the Cards know Barton can handle a part-time role. Hoffpauir is a steady guy, but Ryan's speed and Thurston's versatility keep them ahead in line. |
|
| Alex Alvidrez: You have to keep Pace. Stud lineman can be effective well into their thirties. Tell Holt to restructure his contract. Let him know that things are turning around fast for the Rams. This administration has them on the path to success and he'll reap the benefits. If he won't restructure his contract, then screw him. I think we would be alright with the young WRs we have right now. |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't see Holt buying that line of reasoning, but perhaps the fact the Rams are shopping him around will get him to change his view. What if he gets dealt to another bad team? |
|
Chris Moore: As the days go by and we don't get Ron Bartell re-signed, what are the Rams backup options for that position? We are VERY short at CB if we don't get him back.
Also, does the signing of Jason Brown change our strategy at the top of the draft? I realize he is not a tackle, but maybe we keep Pace, who I think has a couple good years left. Do we even consider Stafford at the top if Detroit passes him up? I know there are many more glaring needs but it really is fairly unlikely that we compete for a playoff spot this season, there are just too many holes. And we have NOTHING in place for our future QB. Or is Josh Freeman later a possibility? However, after watching him against Mizzou this year, I am not impressed. Thanks! |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't see anything prompting to go QB with first pick. Too much money invested in Bulger and too many other needs exist? |
|
| Dan: With the emergene of Tyler Greene's bat and his solid D what how do you feel about him starting at 2nd and how would that affect the rest of the team? I wish there was also had a question on the outfield but at the presnt time I don't think Tony even is sure what will happen with it. Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Tyler could be the 20101 shortstop if he has a big year. I'd like to see that big year largely occur at Memphis, where he could use some at bats. He just started to come around offensively last year. He has the tools to make it, though. |
|
RamFanNC: First, thanks for doing this. For us 'out of town' fans, it is my only link to trying to keep up with what is going on locally.
What is the date that we owe Torry Holt a roster bonus? Do you really think we will be able to get any draft picks for either Holt or Pace? I personally don't think so, because most teams are releasing better players. I wish they would go ahead and release them so we can free up some more cap room space and start moving forward in the post GSOT era. I am concerned that if we continue to wait, we might lose out on siging a few more FA's that we have targeted.
Also, what is the date we have to be UNDER the cap space limit? In other words, can we exceed it for some period of time as long as we get back under it by a set date? |
Jeff Gordon: The decision time on Holt is fast approaching, since he would more than $1 million more that would count against the cap. But there is still time to get picks for one or both guys. Now that the first wave of free agency has played out, teams have a better idea of who is worth what.
Iff hand, I don't know the date that the cap must be met by. But I don't see the Rams looking to really push up against that number. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
I watched the Cards and Mets on MLBN on Friday. It was my first chance to see Motte pitch, and the guy throws heat. I'm not going out on a limb by saying he throws straight darts, and that I saw MAYBE one breaking ball (not a good one) in the entire inning.
Are we really going into the season hoping that Motte or Perez will get the job done? A fastball alone will not fool major league hitters, and Perez has a sick slider...that he can't control.
I think the Cards are marketing these "flame-throwers" as closers because we the fans can't remember the last time a guy came from our system that threw more than 93mph. We are not talking about a Carlos Marmol here. What are your thoughts on the developing bullpen situation? Do Kinney or Salas look like the dark-horse closer? |
Jeff Gordon: Kinney is my guy. I talked to him today and he would not be afraid of that responsibility, if it came his way. The guy has pitched in the biggest possible games, so his poise is a huge plus. And he has a swing-and-miss pitch.
Early reports have Motte ahead of Perez, due to superior command. But he needs to do more with that slider than just show it. |
|
| Lawarence Marmie: So, what's your boy Jim Haslett up to these days? It didn't look like any NFL teams were the least bit interested in him- I think he might have had one interview with the Packers about the DC position there, but he was soon passed up on it. Talk about your stock falling quickly. I don't even think his son's Pop Warner team would want to hire him now- they'd be too afraid of him softening up the defense. |
Jeff Gordon: There you go, kicking a guy when he is down . . .
I'm Jim is disappointed, but look at how many Super Bowl-winning coaches are sitting out this year. This is the Year of the Hot Young Coordinator. |
|
| virginiatom: Are you surprised by the lack of activity on the part of the Rams in this free agency period? I would think a 5-27 record the last two years is a pretty good indication that the players you have are not very good. Does the new staff feel good about what is on their roster that they didnt make any additions other than Brown? |
| Jeff Gordon: All along, I've noted that this team won't be super active in free agency. There were too many high-priced veterans already in place. There was OK cap room, but so many needs. The Rams made one big hit and may make another, but otherwise the pick-ups won't be real flashy. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Right now, it appears the order of the rotation for ST will be:
Lohse, Wellemeyer, Carpenter, Piniero and Wainwright
Do you expect to see a lot of spot starts (like Hawksworth on Wednesday) from guys like Todd, Boggs, Hawksworth, Ottavino, etc., or do you think Tony and Dave will lock in on getting the starting 5 into action every 4-5 days?
Also, when will we start seeing some guys sent back to the minors camp? |
Jeff Gordon: Adam goes today. It will be fun to see how he does. Tony will focus on getting his big five ready to start while keeping McClellan and Thompson ready to stretch as needed. Ottavino gets a start with Team Italy in the WBC, so that will help him. Hawksworth passed up the WBC and threw well in his first go here, so I'd look to see him stay busy too.
With 35 games to play and TLR asking for more pitching help, don't expect to see many kids jettisoned any time soon. And call-backs from the minor league camp will be common and guys need time off. |
|
| PA Rams Fan: Assuming the Rams get done what they want in the defensive backfield and then take an offensive tackle in the first round, is there a behemouth DT that is worthy of the early 2nd round pick that should still be available? |
| Jeff Gordon: If the Rams did take a tackle first, I believe the team would at LB next. |
|
| Casey: With the impressive starts of Jay and Barton in the OF, are we looking at another inevitable demotion of Colby Rasmus? He just can't seem to step up his game even when he's basically been handed a job. What's up? |
Jeff Gordon: The Cards didn't hand him a job this spring. The fans may have and some media types may have, but this team has a zillion outfielders.
Rasmus has the tools. But if he doesn't hit this spring, he won't advance. He's just 22, though, and he is competing with guys in their late 20s -- and most of those guys were slow-developing themselves. |
|
Plant from Philly: Hey Gordo
Since we shopping Pace and Holt that means we are drafting a OT with the 2nd pick of the draft. Also dont you think it would be great if we signed Nate Washington to be our #1 Wr the would be amazing Washington Avery as our #2 and with Burton our #3? |
| Jeff Gordon: At this point, I'd be surprised if the Rams drafted an OT first or bid on a price free agent at WR. |
|
| Jack: Brown looks like a great sign. Do Rams still go OL with #2 or maybe Curry? Will Curry still be on the board? Is Crabtree completely out of the picture? |
| Jeff Gordon: No, Crabtree isn't completely out of the picture. |
|
Svengo: It seems that Curry is the hot name for many fans in the first right now. What do you think of the 2nd round OTs?
My favorite unless someone unexpectedly drops would be Loadholt. In footwork drills he might not excel but one the field he is huge. Might be best at RT but Barron seems more suited(body type and athleticism) as a LT and if he cant get his focus on he will be gone anyway. This would get us much bigger both on O and D like Spags want. Guessing Curry will never happen if Pace is gone though, or is there still a chance?
Thanks R |
| Jeff Gordon: If Pace leaves, the team could still go elsewhere will the first pick and rely on the OT draft depth to get somebody later. |
|
gnykin2: Hey, love the chats. Two questions from two sports.
1. From what you have heard/seen does skip pass the "eye test" at second base (aka does he look like he can do it).
2. Who is the better team in your mind (and who has the stronger tournament resume), the Illini or Mizzou? |
Jeff Gordon: Missouri is better, I believe, because of Mike has 11 guys going right now and kids maturing on the fly. But as we just saw, they can stink it up when they don't shoot it.
Skip has looked terrible at second base Sunday, but I'm told he has really progressed in the fielding drills. He is a great athlete and a hard worker. Don't bet against him. |
|
| Roger Schutt: What's the reason young Cardinals' catcher Brian Anderson isn't getting much in the way of playing time at Spring Training this year? It sure seems like the Cardinals are overlooking great potential here! |
| Jeff Gordon: Anderson is on the radar. The team know what is has there. But Molina and LaRue are the 1-2 for this year. |
|
Bluff Boy: Thanks Gordo,
I would like to see Ludwick with team USA. We need the outfield help. Is the roster set we have lost some OF's the last couple of days. I know the injury risk but could live with it if he got hurt playing for his country.
Being from Poplar Bluff we have loved watching Tyler Hansbrough. Where do us see him being drafted. I feel he will go mid first round. Thanks for taking the question hope u get a sunburn down there. |
Jeff Gordon: Psycho T ought to be a first-rounder, of course, but his draft stock actually slipped since his earlier days at N.C. Scouts do like guys with more athleticism.
Ludwick wanted to stay here and stay focused on keeping his job. This is a big year in his development. Is he a star or a one-year wonder? |
|
| Bluff Boy: When are we going to look at trading one of our outfielders. We have a bunch of good players and I think we still need some bullpen help and maybe a starter. |
| Jeff Gordon: True, but the brain trust is still sorting out what the Cards have and don't have. If Rasmus gets hot, the team will have to make a decision sooner than later. But if he struggles, then the team opens with Duncan playing most days. |
|
| Joe Stafford: Jeff, are the Rams really tinkering with the idea of a second day pick for either Pace or Holt? Neither one will redo their contract? Strange how a players career can nosedive. |
| Jeff Gordon: Both guys are potential Hall of Famers, but so is Marvin Harrison -- and we saw what just happened to him. |
|
Ed in Vancouver: hello Gordo,
Who do you see the Lions taking w/ the 1st pick in the draft? I really believe the Lions will mess us up by taking J-Smooth Jason Smith OT Baylor. Reason being at the end of the day teams build around QB/LT/DE thus were forced to take E. Monroe.
I hope we get J-Smooth he's the cornerstone piece we need, do you agree/disagree or thoughts??? |
| Jeff Gordon: Right now, I'd guess the Rams would take Curry instead. |
|
Ed in Vancouver: Hello Gordo,
How do you see Billy & Spags upgrading the DE/DL position??? The UFA's are a weak class unless they pull a magic trick and get peppers (can't see that happening at all, thats fan wishful thinking)
Do any of the RFA like a Jason Hunter Packer worth targeting??? |
| Jeff Gordon: Good question -- and I have answer. This situation explains why Little got retained, no questions asked. |
|
| Joe Stafford: Jeff, if the Rams trade/cut Holt, where is their #1 coming from? No disrespect but Donnie Avery is hardly a #1 yet! |
| Jeff Gordon: Burton has big upside, too. I like the speed/possession combo. But I would like to see another impact guy added one way or another. |
|
Ed in Vancouver VCR: HELLO GORDO,
PLEASE TELL ME REDOING HOLT/PACE CONTRACT "ISN'T" AN OPTION!!! CONCUR???
TAKE ANY PICK IF THAT MEANS SUCKING IT UP AND TAKING A 5TH PICK WE GOTTA DO IT OR CUT THEM!!!! |
| Jeff Gordon: Many fans feel just the opposite. I believe the time to rebuild is here, but I could see a scenario where keeping Pace makes sense. |
|
| Joe Stafford: Jeff, The Rams did a great job by signing Jason Brown! Finally a 3oo + lb center that can stand up to the biggest nose tackles! |
| Jeff Gordon: Even when Nick Leckey was standing up, it didn't seem like he was standing up. |
|
| Big Thirsty: EVEN IF WE SIGN BARTELL WHO WILL THEY START OPPOSITE HIM |
| Jeff Gordon: Comeback player of the year: Tye Hill! |
|
| Big Thirsty: ARE THE RAMS SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING GOING INTO THE SEASON WITH INCOGNITO AND BARRON STARTING ON THE RAMS LINE THIS SEASON...I MEAN IS THERE NOT ENOUGH TAPE OF THE THESE MORONS GETTING PENALTY AFTER PENALTY COSTING US CRUCIAL FIELD POSTION AND LOSING US GAMES. PLEASE TELL ME THE NEW BIG DEAL FRONT OFFICE ISNT THAT STUPID |
| Jeff Gordon: Both guys are huge talents, though, and the team can't send everybody packing. |
|
| Armen Dacity: If the Rams obtain additional draft choices by trading Pace and/or Holt, have you heard anything to indicate that they might try to use the extra picks to trade up and obtain an additional (late) first round pick. I think there will be some very good values between picks 20-32. |
| Jeff Gordon: There will be great value there. But getting into the late first round might be tougher than trading up to the top of the first round. |
|
| Lawarence Marmie: Can you squash or verify the rumors about Scott Linehan's power in Detroit? The latest buzz is that they are scheduling 8 free agent visits- all of which are tight ends and also that they are seriously contemplating taking Brandon Pettigrew with the #1 in the draft. |
| Jeff Gordon: Bam! |
|
| Aaron: I know it is still Spring Training, but if the Cards are doing well at the trade deadline, is there a chance that they will make a big move. Maybe they could go after Matt Holliday if the A's are out of contention. The club didn't really make any moves this offseason, and they give me no reason to think they will make any in season moves, or even next winter. |
| Jeff Gordon: I believe they will make in-season moves as needed, but not for an outfielder. There are SO many outfielders stacking up. |
|
| kat89447: I know it's still pretty early, but how is the Schu experiment really going. I do believe if anyone can pull it off, it would be Skip, but is it still looking doable? Also, why isn't Thompson getting a start or two? I think I would rather see him in the 5th spot that Joel. He seems more consistant and definately has better focus. Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Your opinion on Thompson is not shared by the Cards brass. Brad is seen as a useful guy, but McClellan would get first crack at beefing up the rotation. |
|
Gary V.: Gordo
What do you Believe the RAMS top Priorities are for the rest of Free Agency? (In order of Positional Needs). And are they close on any Deals?
Thanks
Gary |
| Jeff Gordon: Safety is still the priority. If Bartell leaves, then CB becomes priority. |
|
| john from nj: do you think the rams will swap bulger for cutler and is there any free agents coming in this week thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Bulger for Cutler? Why would Denver do that? |
|
Aaron Curry: Hey Gordo,
St. Louis hasn't really been looking for linebackers in free agency this offseason. Makes you want to believe that I might be joining the Rams on April 25...unless Detroit has something to say about it. |
| Jeff Gordon: Hope you like toasted ravioli. |
|
| Nathan in MN: Do you think a very good spring by either Barton or Jay will push Mozoliak to work a trade to eliminate the outfield jam they have? Even if Skip works out at 2B, you have Ankiel, Ludwick, Duncan, Rasmus, Mather(once Glaus returns), Barton, Jay, Stavinohva. Something has got give right? |
| Jeff Gordon: In time, yes, something has to give. |
|
| Big Thirsty: WILL THE RAMS LOOK AT ANY OTHER FREE AGENT O-LINEMAN |
| Jeff Gordon: They are still eye-balling tackles, in case Pace exits. |
|
| Big Thirsty: ARE THE RAMS CONFORTABLE GOING INTO THE SEASON WITH CHRIS LONG AND LENARD LITTLE AS THE STARTING DE'S |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes, but depth is an issue for the whole D-line. Victor Adeyanju and James Hall were OK last year, but both are one-dimensional. |
|
| Big Thirsty: HOW SOON CAN WE EXPECT THE RAMS TO CONTACT JERMAIN PHILLIPS, ALSO WHEN WILL THEY MAKE A PLAY FOR A FULLBACK... |
| Jeff Gordon: Fullback is a need, but not an area that will involve heavy bidding. |
|
| Joe Stafford: Jeff, how come the Rams havn't had any defensive tackles visit yet? Are they planning to get one in the draft? They need to do something, they are way too soft in the middle. |
| Jeff Gordon: They need to get more stout, yes. Fans actually pounded the Haynesworth drum right up to the point where he broke the bank. |
|
Tim B: Thanks for taking the time today, Mr. Gordon.
Regarding the Rams #2 overall draft pick, I really like Justin Smith OT from Baylor, but am I crazy? DON'T WE ALREADY HAVE TWO OFFENSIVE TACKLES? I am fully aware that clearing some cap space by dumping Pace would be helpful, but we haven't done that yet!
Why doesn't the discussion start and end with Aaron Curry -- the most talented, most upside, most charismatic, and safest choice in the draft? Enlighten me, Jeff.
-Tim B |
| Jeff Gordon: I think Curry is No. 1 on their board right now. |
|
Ram Fan in Alabama: How is it that a team like Washington who was at the BOTTOM of the league in cap room at the start of free agency was able to sign over $150 million in new contracts? The Rams are in the middle of the league with cap room and so far all we can muster is overpaying for 1 offensive lineman? I really hope that Bell eventually works out at guard for us, but we did the same thing with him... I do think that Brown will be a solid center, but will he be worth all that money we just shelled out???
I guess I am just scratching my head as to how Washington (and these other teams) with WAY, WAY less cap room seem to always find a way to sign players that we "can't afford"... and yes, I know you can't "buy" a championship team and I'm not necessarily in favor of Washington's recent signings, I'm just confused about the cap I suppose. |
| Jeff Gordon: The Redskins make insane decisions that leave gaping holes all over their roster, which explains why they can't get back in the title hunt. I can't believe they just made that guy the highest paid defensive player ever. |
|
chrisdavidg: El Gordorino,
Ok so I am sure you are tired of hearing the Pace/Holt questions, I am sure something will happen this week. As far as Michael Vick being our backup, what are our chances of landing him. What is the cap hit for bringing someone like Vick into Ram Nation. |
Jeff Gordon: I don't see any team taking on that salary. So he will likely become a free agent at some point. And I don't see him getting premium money to go anywhere.
Can he play quarterback in a conventional offense? Maybe, maybe not. The Rams are looking for a pure back-up for Bulger and Vick seems not to be that guy. |
|
| Tackleberry: Where do you think the Rams organization is on Barron right now? If they trade Pace or draft someone other than a OT with that first pick, Barron becomes a very large part of the future of this club, right? And if that happens, doesn't that sort of create an Adam Kennedy-esque scenario for the Rams? |
| Jeff Gordon: If Pace, Barron has value next year. After that, it will depend on how he plays. Either he wins over the New Regime or he doesn't. |
|
| Obes10: Do you think there would be any interest in the Rams trading Bulger to Tampa Bay? They need a QB and have plenty of cap room. Rams could then sign Garcia as a short term fix and a fresh start for Bulger. |
| Jeff Gordon: Don't see mutual interest there, no. |
|
Michael Scriven: Hey Gordo,
Does it really look like an open competition at second base so far or is the club just hedging its bet on Schumaker in case he isn't good enough defensively at second base? |
| Jeff Gordon: Hedging the bet. You get the distinct impression TLR wants Skip in that role hitting leadoff. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
What kind of contract do you think Ankiel would command (assuming a healthy season) and do you think it is worth the Cardinals money?
I understand our outfield depth, but a LH bat with power and a cannon for an arm are pretty valuable. Assuming Rick is gone after 2009, does Ludwick move to right? If so, who are we looking at in LF? |
Jeff Gordon: Given the economic decline generally, prices will come down. Instead of $8 million a year, Rick may command less.
Left field . . . Jon Jay! |
|
steve: Gordo:
Early impressions of the back-up infielder competition? Looks like Barden and especially Tyler Greene are opening some eyes. Can Tyler force his way onto the roster? |
| Jeff Gordon: He is turning heads, but it might be too soon -- unless somebody else gets hurt. Thurston's versatility (not a bad outfielder!) makes him a solid bet if he hits. Greene could position himself to replace the other Greene at SS in the long haul. |
|
| pdub: Aside from signing Brown and hopefully signing Butler in free agency - as well as re-signing Bartell - what other needs to you realistically see the Rams addressing with FA's? |
| Jeff Gordon: WR is an area the Rams have worked at. DTS is a need position. There are tackles still there, too. |
|
| FloTrain: You know, looking at that pic of Piniero on STL website, he looks like he's in good shape compared to last year.... And with that chip on his shoulder from the WBC snub, I'm thinking maybe 10-13 wins out of the guy. I'll probably get ripped on that, but as a former college and now rec league athlete disrespect works WONDERS! Thoughts on Piniero making most everyone look foolish with a solid, respectable year for a #5 starter? |
| Jeff Gordon: He threw well yesterday and seemed willing to move past the Oquendo snub. A double-digit win total is possible. |
|
Luke: Gordo:
So far which young player has impressed you the most and do you think there are any under the radar prospects like Jon Jay or Tyler Green that have a chance of making the team or being called up sometime before September? |
| Jeff Gordon: Jay, Greene, Wallace, Todd, Hawksworth -- there are plenty of new guys who could make the team by September. You could see why some of these guys were top picks and regarded as top prospects. |
|
paceram: Jeff,
Thanks again for taking time to answer questions about the Rams! My question(s) is in your professional/personal opinion will the Rams end up restructuring, releasing or trading Orlando Pace and/or Torry Holt? Personally, I would like to see both Pace and Holt restructure but if that is not possible then I would like to see the Rams get something in return for them by way of trade. With all the veterans being released can the Rams really expect to get much for them? |
| Jeff Gordon: They took a stance against restructuring and got put on the trade block as a reuslt. Not sure if they have really softened their contract view since then/ |
|
Luke: Gordo:
Do you think that Skip can play 2B this year for the whole year or do you think that this is a move that will not really come into play until 2010? I hope Skip can handle 2B defensivley. |
| Jeff Gordon: Every effort will made to make that work this year and going forward. |
|
pdub: Gordo..
Which of the two top linebackers - Curry or Maualuga - would you prefer the Rams to pick if that's the direction they go with the #2 overall pick?
What's your |
| Jeff Gordon: Curry by a mile -- not even close. |
|
| Trainwreck: Who would the Blues haave to give up in your opinion to even have a shot at Pronger? My guess is Peitranglo and Perron. |
| Jeff Gordon: Anaheim would likely want a No. 1 pick, too, and possibly a mid-priced veteran. |
|
Luke: Gordo:
Joe Beimol and Will Ohman are still out there and our lefties to me have been very unimpressive. I think Ring gave up something like 4 runs in one inning and had trouble throwing strikes. I am fine with Miller but Manning, Ring, and Ostlund really dont seem to cut it. What do you think the chances are of signing one of Beimol or Ohman. Surely by now they are ready to sign and would do so now for cheaper than before just to get into camp. One of these two pitchers could be "this years Kyle Lohse" for the bullpen. |
| Jeff Gordon: I'm talking to Mozeliak tomorrow -- and once again I will make a pitch for one more addition. |
|
| Nate B.: Where do you think Paul Kariya will fit in next year? Which of the forwards do you think will get the boot in favor of Kariya? |
| Jeff Gordon: Will Tkachuk play one more year? That seems to be the most obvious opening. |
|
pdub: Gordo
Curry or Maugaluga - who fits the Rams needs better at linebaker iyo?
What would you address first - LB, OT, WR?
Thx |
| Jeff Gordon: Curry. If he is there, then that would be a great direction for the Rams to go. |
|
chicagoblues: Gordo, is it possible to land Pronger without giving up Perron? (Or Oshie and Berglund)
What do you expect to see the Blues do in the next few days? Predictions please.. |
Jeff Gordon: I predict . . . no major deal. Just a guess. The Ducks will want the world for Pronger and a contender will pay more. Going the other way, does another team want to a No. 1 for Keith.
The Blues management team will be aggressive, but now may not be the time for that. |
|
cards27: hey jeff,
With mather playing 3rd (and doing fairly well from what I've read) and Freese out with the achilles tendon problem, does mather have the upper hand for the opening day spot at 3rd? personally, i'd love to see what Freese can do there but I'm wondering if he can make up the ground he's missed from his minor injury or if Tony seems to be favoring Mather already.
Secondly, is there any chance Kyle McClellan pushes Pineiro out of the rotation with a strong spring? I know Pineiro's making a ton of money so i doubt it, but what would you say the percentage chance of McClellan being in the rotation on Opening Day would be if, say, he has an exceptional spring and Pineiro struggles?
Thanks Jeff! |
| Jeff Gordon: Mather has the upper hand because he has hit at this level and shows no indication of being unable to play there. I love McClellan, but Joel will have to pitch his way out of the rotation. Kyle didn't start well with his first appearance, but it is a long spring. |
|
David: Hey Gordo,
What % chance do...
The Blues have of landing Pronger?
The Rams have of going into the draft with more than 1 first round pick?
The Cardinals have of signing/trading for another SP before Opening Day?
Brandon Marshall and Pac Mac Jones have of sharing the same prison cell in 2009? |
Jeff Gordon: Hey Gordo,
What % chance do...
The Blues have of landing Pronger? (I'm not a proponent, so I'll put it at 10 percent.)
The Rams have of going into the draft with more than 1 first round pick? (20 percent.)
The Cardinals have of signing/trading for another SP before Opening Day? (zero percent.)
Brandon Marshall and Pac Mac Jones have of sharing the same prison cell in 2009? (zero percent._ |
|
Fred Wied NJ Ramfan: Jeff,
I like the approach the Rams are taking by going after younger players with upside and many years of quality football ahead of them. If they sign Butler & Bartell to go along with Brown then I would consider the FA period a success. They could still go after some lower priced players. My question though is why not call in the Raven safety Leonard or Mcfadden the corner just in case, as fall back options? Butler & Bartell are shopping, why aren't the rams? Wouldn't that increase the Rams bargaining power? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams are shopping. They don't advertise every call they make. |
|
| Chris: Would JD and co really trade away Perron or Pietrangelo for Pronger. I'm all for getting Pronger back, but is it worth losing some of our most valuabe young players? Would the Ducks ever trade him if we didn't include these players in a package? And if not them, then who would go? |
| Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't deal Pronger without getting both those players and a top pick, too. If I'm the Blues, I pass on that. |
|
Kevin: Jeff,
How close are the Cards to signing either LHR Ohman, Reyes or Beimel?
If no signing then how close on a trade for LHR Scott Downs or Grabow?
Are the Cards considering offering a contract to Odalis Perez?
Will the Cards consider a trade for a legit 2nd baseman? Signing Grudz?
The apparent defiance to adding quality pieces is mind-blowing.
Thanks,
Kevin |
| Jeff Gordon: No, no, no, no . . . and they would note they have quality pieces in camp. I agfee that another lefty is needed. |
|
tmp0708: Hi Gordo,
In your opinion who is the leader at this point to play 3rd while Glaus recuperates?
Ted |
| Jeff Gordon: Mather. |
|
Scott: Hey Gordo thanks alot for takeing my questions. I have a couple for you.
(1)With the signing of Brown does this mean we wont draft Offencive line with the 1st pick??
(2) I read that brown didnt wanna play for the rams but they offerd him so much he took it. Do you think he'll bring negative energy to the locker room with that?
(3) And finally If the rams trade tory and pace is there a chance we get another 1st round pick and could possibly draft Curry an dpossibly Maclin or maybe even Crabtree if no one drafts him? |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't see the Rams getting a second first-round pick that high. |
|
Canram: Hi Gordo,
Two quick questions;
1) What could we expect if we trade Torry Holt and Orlando Pace?
2) What players and positions are we going after in F.A.?
Thanks Andrew from Toronto, Canada |
Jeff Gordon: They could get mid- to late-round picks for those guys, but every little bit helps.
Free agent tagets: Just about everything. |
|
Mark from Michigan: Jim:
How well did Chris Long progress during the season. Should we expect him to be a future Pro-Bowler, or a bust? |
| Jeff Gordon: Given his tools and work ethic, he is way more likely to make it big than wash out. |
|
EB: Gordo,
Looking at trying to afford Pujols after his contract expires, do you think the Cards might be willing to consider some sort of ownership stake instead of paying $20M+ a year? In addition to helping keep the payroll down, it might also allow Albert to be involved in some of the big picture planning, which could help alleviate his dissatisfaction with the short-term direction.
Thanks,
EB |
| Jeff Gordon: Others have suggested such a thing. It that came with a lifetime organizational role, that would really work. |
|
John B: Gordo,
What is with the rumor about Perron being apart of the package for Pronger? Doesnt that go against everything the front office has been telling us the last few years about building from within? Also, we need scoring and Perron is someone that can hopefully bring that the next few years and we are loaded on defense the next few years without Pronger. Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Perron hasn't been Murray's favorite player, but I'm with you. Keep him. build around him. Get more like him. Find another stud goalie. The Pronger thing doesn't excite me. |
|
J.Brad: 2 quick questions:
Who is the backup catcher with Yadi at he WBC?
Who are some free agent pitchers as yet unsigned that the Cardinals could go after at this point? (If they did)
Thanks, Gordo, good stuff as always...
Brad in TN |
Jeff Gordon: Pudge, who is campaigning for work, and Soto of the Cubs. Nice group!
There are pitchers available, including working out across the way here at Jupiter: Pedro Martinez. But right now there is no interest in adding anything. |
|
John B: Gordo,
What do you think Rasmus's chances are of making the Cards even with a not so great spring, like he has started off? Also, i know a lot is based on if skip can play second. Also, why isn't larussa playing rasmus in center? I know he loves Ankiel, but Ankiel was ranked no better than average by almost all metrics in center while people say rasmus is already an above average center fielder. Thanks. |
Jeff Gordon: TLR is trying to establish Rick in CF this season. And he is trying to see if Rasmus can handle the other spots.
He is also a sending message to Colby - nothing comes for free. If Colby hits, he'll be on the team. If he doens't, he will have to kill Class AAA pitching and wait for his call. |
|
| jakestuh: Ray Lewis, Too old and expensive for the Rams? |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes and yes. |
|
JusticeBrian: Hey Gordo,
If the Rams turn their losing ways around in the near future and once again become a strong force in the NFC, do you believe Chip and Lucy will still look to sell the team?
Justice. |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes -- this is a tax issue, not a competitiveness issue. |
|
daddonator: Gordo -
What can you tell us about the status of Justin King, last year's CB draftee who hurt his knee at the start of training camp and missed the entire season? Is he fully healed, and has he progressed in any way past the pure rookie status? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: We won't know about him until the team starts working for real this off-season. |
|
daddonator: Gordon -
What's the deal with guard Setterstrom? He looked like a starter in '07 but missed '08 with injury. Now the Rams don't even give him a tender offer? Is the knee never going to be right, or do the new coaches think he's sub-par? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Mark has had a couple of really bad injuries, so that may be the drawback. Plus they like Greco and Schuening. |
|
| Bermuda Rams: If the Rams fail to sign James Butler do you think they will target Cleveland's Sean Jones or look to get a safety in the draft? |
| Jeff Gordon: I see them adding a veteran, one way or another. |
|
Brendan: I have always subscribeed to the theory of by low and sell high. I always criticized the Yankees because every year they overspend for the best available player that year via trade or free agency. Right now is the exact opposite. I would think a team who has the money such as the cardinals would give out some two to three year deals at low salaries to get value at the end of those contracts. It seems like the perfect time to take advantage of guys getting low dollar one year deals and parlay them into multi year deals now?
By the way I get a smile every time I hear your boy's (J.C.) name... it's never good.
Brendan |
| Jeff Gordon: Interesting dynamic these days. Many players gambled on one-year deals hoping things will be better in 2010. In fact, things might be worse when all the corporate money dries up. Players might be willing to take security and forget going for the real big money. |
|
daddonator: Gordo -
Any inkling as to who is talking with the Rams on trading for Torry Holt, and what level draft pick they may be offering? Thanks. |
Jeff Gordon: They'd love to get Tennessee to pony up a No. 1 again, no?
A team like the Giants would be an obvious fit for one year. But you're looking at a second-day pick, in all probability. |
|
| lloydsugarbear: What's up Gordo. Just wondering if the Rams renegotiate Holts contract due they still get the salary cap relief if they trade like a sign and trade, or does the whole deal counts toward this cap this year, same thing for Pace. What possibly can the Rams actually expect to get for two players the whole league know they are going to release? I hope they can resign Bartell even if they have to overpay him a little. It seems a shame that we couldn't make the Holt trade last year. Anyway thanks for the Q & A sessions. Do you see a conspiracy left by Zygmut concerning the Bartell issue seeing as though B D wanted to do this last year before he hit the open market, and are their any other things left be Z before he left Rams park that might undermind B D and Spags? |
Jeff Gordon: Bartell didn't get signed because nobody was running the franchise. Zygmunt got clipped, Shaw moved aside and the new team wasn't assembled until the off-season. Zygmunt could have done something, I guess, but he was a dead man walking. Nothing more than that, I believe.
A salary renegotiation is done to create more cap room. |
|
| DALE JONES: HI Jeff thanks for the chance to ask questions . why is it every year the Rams only try to get one or two free agents? I know we have cap issues this year but it seams other teams always have money to spend and do it(Giants ,Redskins New England)Thanks for the answer. |
| Jeff Gordon: New England also unloads lots of players, as they just did in the giveaway with the Chiefs. And the Redskins have made huge mistakes. |
|
Corey: Hey Gordo,
Do we know what type of defense Spags will be running? Will it be a 3-4 or the 4-3? Also do you think its a good idea to release or trade holt? I mean we do need a vet who can help these young WR's and Holt really hasn't lost a steep we just played very badly these last couple years. |
Jeff Gordon: You're going to see the Eagles/Giants defense. That will put a premium on linebacker play, which is why the Curry thing is taking flight.
As for Holt, was there any evidence of his leadership last year? |
|
Cards4520: Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.
What do you think are the chances of:
1.) Keith Tkachuk staying with the blues? If traded, chances he would be back here next year.
2.) Pronger returning?
3.) Fued b/t cards front office and TRL getting worse throughout the year? |
Jeff Gordon: I believe Tkachuk is more likely to finish this season with the Blues than leave. But then he might be done, period.
I touched on Chris earlier. The TLR/front office thing will be fine if the new emphasis on player develop pays off. |
|
| sltest: Question about the NHL regarding players, RFA and UFA status. When does the clock start ticking toward RFA and UFA status. For example, in the case of Petroangelo is his clock already ticking towards UFA or does he have to play past 10 games or 40 games for the clock to begin. In other words, can he go back down to juniors next year, and Peoria the year after without the clock starting or once he’s signed to a pro contract like Sonne just was does it start then, or does it start with time in Peoria or on the Blues? |
| Jeff Gordon: If Pietrangelo isn't competing for a NHL job next year, it won't matter when his clock starts -- he will be a major bust. |
|
| Armen Dacity: Any substsance to the Raiders' rumored interest in trading for Pace? |
| Jeff Gordon: If they are interested, they know who to contact. |
|
Bill: Jeff,
I enjoyed your article this morning on the staste of the Cardinals. Is there you get anyone within the organization to answer your question about the bullpen, "Why is the Cards organization leaving itself exposed at this position?" They already know Miller has a partially torn labrum, he should be the second lefthanded option, not the first. Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: That will certainly come up when we talk to Mozeliak Tuesday. |
|
| Darren: Seems the free agent market for wide recievers is far less valuable than was initially thought. There is still a lot of free agent WR's available without a whole lot of interest. How do you see things with Holt playing out based on the lackluster results free agent WR's have been getting so far? Looks to me he'll either be back or the Rams are only looking at a 4th round or lower draft pick for him. |
| Jeff Gordon: That wasn't the best class of FA WRs ever. That had more to do with the activity than the teams not wanting WRs. |
|
| frankelsigep: With the Rams still needing a back-up QB, any chance they try to sign Simms? He is familiar with the west coast system, and is still young enough to be the QB of the Future. |
| Jeff Gordon: Interesting candidate. But mentally and emotionally, can he still play football. |
|
Thumper: Jeff,
With SF signing the WR (Jones) from Tennessee, any chance that Bruce could be in play? This is selfish, but I'd love to see him end his career back where he belongs. He could still contribute as a WR3. I realize this may not make complete sense in the Rams current plans, but it would be the right thing to do for a future HOFer. |
| Jeff Gordon: With the regime change, the odds of that happening really got worse. |
|
| gnykin2: Any chance we sign another lefty, or is the chatter essentially mute? |
| Jeff Gordon: If none of these guys come through, then, yes, you would expect an addition. |
|
| kingoftruth: Has this latest run by the Blues turned them from sellers into buyers as the dealine approaches?? |
| Jeff Gordon: I'm not sure they will either at this point. Sacrificing future elements for a rental would be a huge mistake. |
|
| alrealramfan: Gordo: Please let rams fans know it would be stuip to cut Incognito ,,,,he us the best run blocker on our line ,,,,He firery little of a head case but we need his nastyness and with the signing of brown it will make him and the other gurad bell better and greco will be a soild back up |
| Jeff Gordon: His upside is really up there. I would not give up on him just yet. |
|
| BBFAN: With Jay Cutler unhappy with the Broncos organzation do you you think we have a chance to make a trade and sign him? |
| Jeff Gordon: That is a lot of money to throw at the QB of the Future while the QB for Now is still here. |
|
Bonehead: Gordo
If Holt and Pace don't agree to restructure, what happens to them if:
1. They are traded? Does the new team take on the present contract? Re-negotiate?
2. They are released? Does any team then just have the right to negotiate from scratch with them? Would they be so mad at the Rams that they wouldn't listen to an offer from them? |
| Jeff Gordon: If the players are released, they start from scratch with their next team once they clear waivers. If they are traded, their contracts go with them -- but the new team and rework them. |
|
| John: So when can we expect Bartell to sign a contract and if not with us then who? It would be a shame to see him go after he just started showing some potential considering he was a 2nd round pick and with being our best corner last year. |
| Jeff Gordon: The Saints seem willing to pay more. That is a shame, but what's the way it is. |
|
Free Spirit: Hi Jeff !!
Rams had a defensive lineman that was given a 1 yr. suspension for substance use. I think he's due back next month !
Can you find out if the Rams are gonna try to bring him back, or throw him on the trading block .
He's still a Rams property & was a pretty decent player. 3rd rounder that rated 1st. round.
Also do you know how he's doing & if the Rams did spot checks on him to see if he was staying clean & in shape... |
| Jeff Gordon: Anthony Hargrove blew up his career. Not sure the new coaches want to go there. |
|
heartbreakkid123: Gordo-
Blues chances of getting Chris Pronger? And, would you give up Pietrangelo in a possible deal?
John |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes and yes -- but I wouldn't give up Perron. |
|
Dave C: If the opportunity arose which scenario would you take :
#1)Curry at # 2
#2)Trade down and take B.J. Raji at say #6 and pick-up a early 3rd. |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd take Curry and move on. I might trade down if Curry goes No. 1 overall. |
|
Will: Afternoon Gordo,
1. Minus the penalties, how would you rate Alex Barron's play on durabilty, pass/run blocking skills.
2. If he were to concentrate and not get the false starts would he be an obvious heir-apparent to Orlando once the big man heads off the the sunset.
3. Is there a possibility that Andre Smith of Alabama could drop down to us with our second pick. He played a full three season's without injury in his career at Alabama-issues or not it seems that he is a very durable tackle who could shore up the right side for quite a long time should Pace depart.
Thank you so much and have a great week-Will |
| Jeff Gordon: Barron rates as better than OK, but not so good that you would trust left tackle to him for the long haul on a large new deal. |
|
Luke: Gordo:
Other than the #2 pick which I assume will be Curry if he is not taken #1 who elso do you think the rams could draft that would have an impact this season or the next? Any specific names? |
| Jeff Gordon: Crabtree has their full attention. |
|
Luke: Gordo:
I am glad to see that the rams will be drafting a defensive player and especially a linebacker with the skill set of Curry. Do you see any other key defensive moves this year. Also I just want to throw this out there do you think tennessee would trade a third rounder for Holt? |
| Jeff Gordon: Expect more defensive moves, yes. |
|
RamsCanDoIt!: Jeff,
How do you feel the Rams did this weekend comaparitively to the Denver Broncos? Seems like the Broncos really focused on the 2nd Tier guys and got most of their Christmas shopping done early?
Your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: But the Broncos have a massive advantage going after free agents. It is a destination franchise, even without Shanahan. |
|
Stafford Ram: Gordo,
I have never seen or read about Pace stepping up as a leader for the line. Granted he had injuries but I expected him to be more of a force with the younger guys (e.g. Richie). Did you see anything different? I
think Brown is already trying to step in as the leader. |
| Jeff Gordon: O.P. doesn't have that sort of personality. We'll see if the new guy can pull off the leadership thing. |
|
| lloydsugarbear: Do you see Philly as a possible destination for Holt being that McNabb wants them to upgrade their personal before he resigns. What about Pace going to Philly also, they need a LT since they didn't sign or franchise their tackles. Maybe we could get a second round pick from them. Is that possible in your opinion? Also thanks for taking the time on Q&A's. |
| Jeff Gordon: Maybe Pace is a fit there, but Holt's doesn't project as a long-term WR upgrade to make Donovan happy forever. |
|
| TD51: profootballtalk.com states that the Saints have made an offer to Bartell, do you have any awareness of this or if the Rams intend to fight to keep him here? |
| Jeff Gordon: We've heard the rumblings. Jim Thomas might update you on this issue elsewhere on site. |
|
grimmsta642@yahoo.com: Unless we plan on drafting a running back, do you see any reason why we aren't strongly pursuing a free agent back? Or, did I not catch a story where we may have missed out on one?
Also, I think shipping Holt would be a mistake because we don't have any wxperience at the position when he leaves. Looker is cool, but he's no HOF'er.... Your thoughts on this? |
Jeff Gordon: Holt's cap number is a big ticket to pay for experience at a position where second-year players can star.
I think free agency could be a better bet at RB. |
|
| The Rookie: What does League sources mean? |
| Jeff Gordon: Somebody in the inner circle. |
|
| ramsfaninnc1963: jeff, i think the earlier post was about Claude Wroten, any news on him? |
Jeff Gordon: Oh, Wroten. Same deal. Hard to imagine the new coaches getting involved there, but you never say never.
Hargrove just got over his 1-year ban, so he is looking for a gig. |
|
zuke: Pronger Possiblity:
If the blues could acquire pronger, do you think it would make more sence to lock him up longer than 1 year.
I see this team ready to make a statement and long run 2 years from now, but its hard to do while losing a top Dman.
It seems the blues for the first time have a sound plan and a good thing going. I would hate to break that up this soon. While its not on the level of the butcher deal, I see some similarities. |
Jeff Gordon: Any team getting Pronger would want to lock him up. Trading future commodities for a one-year rental would be stupid.
That looks like it for now.
Talk to you next week. |
