Michael Kent: Jeff ...

Of all the Cards' pitchers in camp, would you agree that Brad Thompson is the Rodney Dangerfield of the lot? To me, he just doesn't seem to get a lot of respect. Even after pitching 3 scoreless innings Saturday, the reports I read continue to have this underlying theme that Thompson is riding on the bubble.

I think I may have figured something out, so please tell me if there's any relevance. What's Thompson's fastball at best? Upper 80s, if that? I think if he were a low-90s fastballer, we wouldn't be reading all this doubt and speculation.

Your thoughts, please. Thank you.
Jeff Gordon: Brad's strengths are his durability and his willingness to pitch periodically in middle relief and fill-in as a starter. Many pitchers hate that role. Brad's best pitch is a sinker. His fastball is just average.

He is unexceptional but handy. I would be put him in a 12-man staff:

Carpenter
Wainwright
Lohse
Wellemeyer
Pineiro
McClellan
Thompson
Reyes
Miller
Kinney
Franklin
Perez/Motte

I would keep Thompson to protect the starting pitchers early on during the season and buy pitchers like Boggs, Todd and Hawksworth to prepare in the minors.

But, yes, Thompson loses out if both Perez and Motte earn jobs for Opening Day.

Fresno Ram Fan: Hey Jeff,

Please tell me the Rams are going to sign Butler or Karney? Why hz it been so quiet in Rams Park? When do you think Holt/Pace get cut or released? Inquiring minds want to know??? Thanx
Jeff Gordon: March 17 is the drop dead date for Holt, since the Rams won't want to pay him that bonus unless Torry is staying -- which seems unlikely at this point.

Once that money is freed up, then the Rams front office can be more aggressive with its bidding.

BillP: Hey Jeff, what's your opinion of Murray's treatment of Perron? Is it warranted, or do you think he goes a little overboard on him? I mean Perron barely touched the ice Saturday night. I mean the guy is a plus 7 right now, only him, Berglund and Oshie are fwds with a plus rating on the Blues, so Perron must be doing something right. I just don't know how the kid is going to develop if he keeps getting treated like a yo yo. Thanks - Have a good week!
Jeff Gordon: I hate to see this. And I hate to see Perron's name in trade rumors, although I couldn't argue against a Perron/Tkachuk for Kessel trade -- which was discussed in some detail before the deadline. Perron's got a little attitude, but that is what will make a great offensive player.

Griff21: Why is Franklin in the mix as closer? that was half our problem last year, Izzy and franklin could not close out games. why put him back in that situation?
Jeff Gordon: This is Tony's way of keeping Motte, Perez and Kinney from getting ahead of themselves. I'm guessing that all these guys will get a crack at closing games this season. I like Kinney because of his experience and Motte because of his command of that high-90s fastball.

Griff21: the blues have allowed something like 13 goals in the last 3 games. I know some Mason had no chance on. Is he getting worn out, or were we simply just outplayed.
Jeff Gordon: Florida really swarmed the Blues. The Panthers were all over the net, whacking away. The Blues suffered a total defensive collapse.

Fatigue could be a factor before this thing ends, but right now I believe the key is defensive zone play. This homestand will give the Blues a chance to restore order, admittedly against tough competition.

Rich: Good morning Gordo,

There are rumors that the Rams have stepped up efforts to trade Pace. Do you see either Pace or Holt released in the coming days to clear cap space?
Jeff Gordon: Holt will hard to trade, since other GMs know the Rams will release Torry rather than pay him the bonus. (That bonus could hire a decent player off the marketplace). Pace will have more value because potential Hall of Fame left tackles are hard to finds. O.P.'s injuries have been more freakish than chronic, so another team may be willing to pony up a pick.

virginiatom: Why has there been so little interest in Leftwich as a back up, potential starter for Bulger? He has a powerful arm and experience, and has proven he can win. Unless they intend to keep Ferotte on the bench all year they can't be serious about signing him.
Jeff Gordon: Gus lives here and he did fine with the Vikings. The Rams want a game manager, not somebody capable of competing with Bulger. Byron has the wherewithal to take over as a starting QB, but he isn't as accurate a Bulger -- so he might struggle to run some of what the Rams will design for Marc.

Jim in SW MO: Gordo thanks for your time. Watching World Baseball this weekend, what do you think about Pedro Martinez coming to the Cardinals? The announcers were talking about Pedro wanting to play for a "family friendly" town and team because his family time was very important to him. Albert I think could be a huge bridge helping the transition with him. I also think he would be an asset to help fill in the gaps that the rotation and bullpen might have.Do you think there could be any serious interest in him by the Cardinals? Thanks again.
Jeff Gordon: Pedro would be a nice addition as the No. 5 starter on a contender. But the Cards are committed to Pineiro (and/or McClellan as needed)at the back of their rotation.

KENO: 3 quick ones for ya Gordo.

1. What is your grade for Skip at 2B so far? I know it's way to early to tell if it will work out, just want an early grade.

2. What do you think the chances are the Blues win this Thurs. against the Sharks?

3. Oh... and... WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AT WITH MY BELOVED RAMS!!! I mean everyone drops all these bomb"Holt want's out", "Rams go after Butler", "Looking to trade Pace", etc., etc.... And then nothing happens. And if your wandering the answer is yes, I have no patience.

That is all.

Thank you Gordizzle
Jeff Gordon: The Rams got Bartell done, in time, and they upgraded their offensive line with an aggressive bid. But this franchise can't overpay to fill every need. And they can't deal Pace just to trade him. That could go on for some time. The off-season work will continue well into the summer. So your patience will be tested.

The Sharks are the NHL's elite team, but this will be a heck of a game. The Blues have piled up lots of points. The OT win in Tampa was huge. They have a better than 50-50 chance to win that game.

Skip at second base . . . C-. It is early, yes, but he has a LOT of work to do. Tony will see this all the way though, so Skip can use the next four weeks to clean up his defense.

virginiatom: Is it surprising that there have been no takers for Holt or Pace? Pace is an enigma because you hate to release him outright, but if the Rams are going to take a tackle in the draft they have no choice but to do that. It seems to me that to take a tackle is smart, but it also seems like with such a high draft choice and Pace already on the roster that they should just take the best player available with their first round pick. An impact player like Curry or Crabtree certainly wouldnt hurt this team.
Jeff Gordon: If you watched Holt play last season, you can't really be surprised by the lack of interest. Teams must wonder if he has the wheels or the heart to play at a high level still. The NFL is a cold play, even to a potential Hall of Famer who has handled himself with grace.

There is no reason to just ditch Pace and create a roster need. If the Rams can get back and draft pick and map out a free agent/draft strategy that includes beefing up that position, then great.

akaitori: Hello from exile in Thailand,

Probably many such questions, so ignore if it's redundant. Do you see Albert's near miss with this week's Rolen-like crash course in fielding as a warning that the Skip experiment brings more negatives than upsides? If so, what are the most likely responses from management?

Thanks, as ever, for keeping the home fires lit for those of us who are far away.
Jeff Gordon: Thurston also put Albert in harm's way with a throw, but this is a fair point. Imagine if the best player in baseball got wiped out while lunging for a novice second baseman's throw. Right now, I believe La Russa is willing to ride this out while expecting Skip to get more comfortable.

Jeff Pan: Dear Jeff:

It was very scary to see Pujols got hit in the head during yesterday's game because of an errant throw to 1st by Skip. We were lucky to escape the diaster. Are we going to be that lucky next time when a simliar play happens? I don't think one spring training will be enough for Skip to be a MLB 2nd baseman. Our offense should be good enough this year even without Skip but our season will probably be over if AP gets hurt becuase of Skip's next error. Why can't we sign Mark Grudeniek Now(a very good defensive 2nd baseman and bat right handeded) which is cheap route OR the expensive option which is fand a way to get Brian Roberts, a true 2nd baseman who can lead off, steal, hit for average and with good slugging percentage, play gold glove defense and just signed a long term friendly contract? If we get Brian Roberts, the cards will be selling more tickets and go deep in the playoffs (which will pay for Roberts salary itself) and we will be the instant heavy favorite to go to the WS and possibly win it this year when we also have an All Star game here in STL. Maybe, Mr. DeWitt will at least consider this idea if he sees this email.
Jeff Gordon: Baltimore re-committed to Roberts, so I believe it is time to quit that chatter. There are a variety of things the Cards can do at second base -- including going internal with Ryan or Thurston, two potential No. 9 hitters -- if Skip can't get it done. I'm not sure a latter-day Mark Grudzielanek excites the baseball people.

Ken Ingham: Hello and Thanks for this outlet. My question is in your opinion ...Who would be the best fit in this year's draft for the Ram"s for the long haul,no matter who presently will or won't be on the team at the start of the season?
Jeff Gordon: The new clubhouse leader is Curry, an impact linebacker Spagnuolo would retool the defense around.

stlcardfan78: I understand TLR invented baseball, but is this 2B carnival necessary? Management is obviously forcing the issue...there is a difference between cultivating young talent and giving a player the opportunity because they've earned it...and forcing young talent on the field due to gaping holes unable to be filled otherwise within the organization.

I for one prefer a HEALTHY Albert Pujols and think it offensive that he's getting kicked in the face tracking errant throws. It doesn't make sense. DeWitt has hoodwinked Cardinal Nation.

If you need proof, just stroll around the stadium and dream up ways to make that green grass turn into revenue for the people of STL come the All Star game...because DeWitt obviously doesn't care.
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt didn't order La Russa to play Skip at second. In fact, DeWitt let TLR whack Kennedy (at a cost of $4 million) because Tony didn't want the guy around. Then DeWitt let Mozeliak fill the LH relief hole that was becoming apparent.

If Skip can't get the job done at second base, then Mozeliak will have options inside and outside the organization. As we saw last week, the money is there if the team has a need that can't be otherwise filled.

The Ironman: Greetings Great One:

The days of major league play aren't that far off. If Schumaker's play at second isn't up to TLR's standards, so be it. But who on' second? If Ryan isn't acceptable, or Thurston can't do the job. Do we again reach for the low hanging fruit? Namely Mr. Durham? He's still out there to be had. He's a super bench player, and he's a darned good second baseman. While the Cardinals front office says they don't want him, I'm thinking that's a bargaining quip. What is your take on the matter? By the way, great call on picking up Reyes last week. As usual you were right on.

Thank you,
The Ironman
Jeff Gordon: I don't believe TLR wants Durham at this point of his career. Ryan and Thurston are options. Hoffpauir and T. Greene are having nice springs, proving there is long-range hope for the infield.

dave cobler: Hey Gordo;

How many double plays has Skip had an opportunity to turn in game situations? I'm am not there watching the games, but based on the reports we are getting from the PD I think he's only had three opportunities. I point that out because his conversion to second base is going to require patients from everyone, especially TLR and the FO since they seem to have committed to him. Putting Pujols in harms way is NOT GOOD, but it seems even he blew off the throw from Schu that could have injured him. Finally, in your opinion how long do you think TLR and MO will be committed to this experiment? I would think they would at least play it out until the July 31st trade deadline. You cannot ask someone to make such a switch without giving them plenty of room to accomplish the task.
Jeff Gordon: It will take time, yes. If Skip doesn't do anything else to threaten Albert's well-being this spring, this could carry on well into the season. The Cardinals will only have more trade leverage as the season goes on, due to the development of the young players.

nightwatchman: So the Cardinals would rather be cheap and plug a bench outfielder in the 2nd base position than resign Aaron Miles or keep Adam Kennedy who ACTUALLY PLAYS 2nd BASE?!?!? This just puzzles the heck out of me.
Jeff Gordon: How is letting Adam Kennedy go, at a cost of $4 million, being cheap? That decision was made for the betterment of the team's makeup.

Skip at 2B is an attempt to upgrade the offense. He is a much better leadoff hitter than Miles.

But, yes, letting Miles get away was silly. He got decent money from the Cubs, but the Cards could have locked him in long before that.

steve: Gordo:

Simple question. Take a guess as of 9 Matrch at the 25 man opening day roster.

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: C: Molina, La Rue
Inf: Pujols, Mather, K. Greene, Schumaker, Ryan, Thurston
OF: Ludwick, Ankiel, Rasmus, Duncan, Barton
SP: Carpenter, Wainwright, Lohse, Wellemeyer, Pineiro
RP: McClellan, Thompson, Reyes, Miller, Kinney, Franklin, Motte.

Barton gets a reprieve with Glaus out; he adds a right-handed bat.
I took Thompson over Perez, for now, because Chris has a sore ankle. I can see that becoming a bigger issue. He should have gotten that fixed in the offseason.

Tiger J: What's Up Jeff, Let's see a maybe promising TE turned LT. A LT NFL ready but not much of a higher ceiling. A LT whomight just "get ghost"(ala combine) or the best linbacker to come out since Willis. Remember when we were soupset when the 49ers snatched him. The new "REMY" MUST PUT ITS STAMP ON THE TEAM. Plus what h.... keep Pace would Love to see him retire a Ram, unless he wants to play 3 yrs keep Big O
Jeff Gordon: It doesn't appear that any of the tackles rise to the level of second overall pick. If the Rams stay there, the team probably wants Curry.

Ram_Malavasi: Gordo:
What do you hear from Rams Park on the need to draft or sign a big, bruising fullback? Do they see it as a priority or are they thinking the answer is already on the roster somehow???
Jeff Gordon: The answer is not on the roster. This is not a high investment need, but one that could come on the second day of the draft or later in free agency.

cbc1b: thanks for takeing our questions, with the report of a possible move of Holt to Baltimore, what do your sources tell you in regards to destinations and odds for those for the following:

1) Holt
2) Pace
3) Incognito
4)kloffenstein
5) Pia

thanks for the help.
Jeff Gordon: I can't predict what other teams want to do. I can only see contenders bidding on Pace, since a rebuilding team would want no part of his age and injury history.

I can't imagine any team wanting the Klop, given his painful shortcomings. Many teams would want Richie, despite his temper, but Pisa's injury history, slight stature and lack of on-field discipline will make the more alert teams wary.

Tiger J: Jeff, can you please tell who TLR is going to start at second? Let's just go Durham, trade Duncan or Skip to the Braves for Kelly Johnson. We are the Cardinals Mr DeWitt. We Mr DeWitt trail only the Yankees in Championships. As a matter of fact Mr. DeWitt we have beat the Yankees three times to their two on us in the WS. I say this to say we support because we are a LEGACY it sure be nice treated as such. Mr.Dewitt please let MO go get us a second baseman
Jeff Gordon: Why would the Braves trade Kelly Johnson to the Cards for Schumaker or Duncan? And wasn't Johnson, like Skip, a converted outfielder who panned out pretty well?

As for Mr. DeWitt, he won the first World Championship here since 1982. If you want to complain about owners, complain about what A-B did to the franchise after Gussie got shoved aside.

Team First!!!: Thanks once again for taking the time to answer these questions. Everyone says Holts large salary is what is keeping him from being traded. If I understand this correctly his cap hit is $8.85 mil but his salary is only $6.65 mil, so if he was traded the team he's traded to would only be responsible for the $6.65 correct? Any chance the Rams pay his $1.25 mil roster bonuse in hopes that with a lowered salary some team will trade for him? And if he's traded he would likely sign a new deal right? So couldn't the Rams trade him for a low round pick with escalators? Like if Holt does restructure it gets bumped from a 5th to a 4th and if he goes to the probowl it gets bumped to a 3rd. I just can't believe that there is a market for TO who got a one year deal worth $6.5 mil but there is no market for Holt. Am I off on this?
Jeff Gordon: Torry's next team will have to redo the deal. I would expect the next team to want that re-do agreed to before the trade is made.

Holt's declining production makes him a tough call. Some teams would rather the Rams just release him. Some teams would rather start from scratch with him as a street free agent. But there may be a team or two willing to play ball this week, rather than risk letting Torry call his own shots later.

Joe Stafford: Hello Jeff,

Any news on the James Butler front yet? What is taking so long to sign this guy? Is he wanting to hold the team up, or are the Rams dragging their feet?
Jeff Gordon: The player holding the team up, the team dragging its feet -- the marketplace in action! It's all in the art of the deal. When several teams get involved, it gets interesting. But St. Louis does offer a chance to play a big role in the planned defensive turnaround. Spagnuolo's rep with defensive players will help him get a lot of the guys he wants over the long haul.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, Are the Rams going to wait until Holt's bonus money is due before releasing him? I have alot of respect for him, but the Carolina stuff last season rubbed me the wrong way. If they are going to get rid of him anyway, I wish the Rams would just get it overwith. No team will trade for a player that knows he is going to be cut anyway.
Jeff Gordon: Maybe a team will, maybe a team won't. Most teams would be willing to let him hit the pavement before taking a look. But there is always the chance that a GM won't want to take that chance. For the right team -- a contender looking to win right now -- Holt could be worth a second-day draft pick.

The Rams don't have much leverage, but the team must play it out anyway.

Crazy_Legs: What LB slot do you see Pisa playing if we draft Curry? Otherwise who will be our starting LB's and what position do you think they will be playing?
Jeff Gordon: If the Rams draft Curry, moving Will over would make sense. But I believe this team would need still another LB to fill the void on the other side. I like Draft as an extra LB, but not starting.

I'm more than ready to move on without Pisa. Even when he was healthy the last few years, which was not often, he wasn't consistently good.

Gabriel 2 Snow: Hello Gordo, been quite some time since you've heard from me, hope all is well with you & yours.
A few Ram questions please.
1. I thought Goldberg was perhaps our most valuable offensive lineman. His versatility, playing every position but center if needed, seemed to be something any team would covet. Last I heard, he was still unsigned. Is it likely he will be back?
2. It seems that nobody considers Greco a viable candidate to push for playing time. Is he considered just a backup, or will he be in the mix?
3. Any clue if the new staff is considering trying Bell+at+tackle?
Thanks+Gordo
Jeff Gordon: I, too, am a big Goldberg guy. He may have hit the market looking for a chance to start, but to me he is an ideal sixth or seventh guy.

Greco will compete for a starting job, I believe. He finished well last year and his position coach is back.

Bell is an option at tackle, due to his athleticism, but team would be better off beefing him up this off-season and making him a better guard. If he was too small to power block at guard, how can he handle tackle?

Joe Stafford: Jeff, any chance that the ohio state mlb James Laurinaitis could fall to our 2nd round pick?
Jeff Gordon: But if the team takes Curry first, then that's where the Rams add an OT or WR.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, what would you think about this draft in the first 4 rounds.
1. Aaron Curry
2. James Laurinaitis or Patrick Chung if we don't sign Butler?
3. Paul Kruger de or William Beatty ot
4. Rett Bomar QB
Jeff Gordon: I would be surprised if they took two LBs off the top, although I do see a need to add two to this lineup. I'd want to go higher for the OT unless the team opted to keep Pace for another year.

Rhett Bomar is an interesting kid, but I don't know about going that high for a QB project.

Martin: I think its entirely possible the Rams could draft Curry then Hakeem Nicks in the 2nd, but the problem would be O-Tackle. Is Kalif Barnes a possibility for the Rams at the right side with Barron moving to the left? Have you heard anything on the inside re: Barnes?
Jeff Gordon: The team has to make its call on Pace before looking at other FAs there. Folks are Rams Park seemed intrigued by Jonathan Stinchcomb, but he re-upped with the Saints. Barnes grades out as pretty ordinary.

ramfaninbmore: Hello sir,
I am not sure but dont we need (not want) a starting SS? why are we waiting for butler? is he that good? does spags want him that bad? why havent we moved on to the next best option (roy williams)?
Is it safe to assume that bcause pace didnt ask to be released that he wants to stay? also if he did stay and was healthy all season what would happen to the Tackle everybody predicts we will pick.
My vote is keep pace and pick curry because he is the safest pick, best overall plus he fills a need. not to mention there will be other OT's in rnd 2 but not another Curry. and keep holt too unless his $ is really NEEDED elsewhere.
Jeff Gordon: Butler was the guy Spagnuolo knew and wanted. Too bad that agent Carl Poston is known for dragging things out. There are some interesting safeties still on the market, but, yes, the Rams will have to move on from Butler at some point if the guy's agent won't let him sign.

ramfaninbmore: better yet why not tender an offer to landry?
Jeff Gordon: That is just one of the better names still out there. In the end, the coach will make the call on whether he wants the guy.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, How about starting Barron at left tackle this year to see if he is worthy of a new contract, redo Pace's contract and use him at RT, and draft heavy on defense this year. That way even if we have a bad record and need to replace Barron/Pace, there should be some good draft prospects next year. This team can't be rebuilt in 1 year. Way too many holes to fill.
Jeff Gordon: If Pace is here, he plays left tackle. Period. If Barron wants to earn the big money here, he has to take whatever assignment he gets and excel with it. If he can't learn the right-side footwork after all this time, then he is unworthy of further investment.

David: It looks like Jason Smith is making a push to go #1. If that is the case, are the Rams still looking to fill a tackle position? Is the Pace situation going to affect their move? If the Rams go with Aaron Curry, can they find a tackle with their 2nd pick?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, the Rams can find a tackle with their second pick. They would be quite comfy taking Curry at No. 2 overall.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, man is it slow in free agency or what? I'm happy about the Brown and Bartell signing, but I sure do hope that Devaney and Spags doesn't think this team is already fixed. Otherwise their in for a rude awakening.
Jeff Gordon: This team has many holes to fill. Hence the need to be deliberate and make some value signings. If the Rams were just a few players away, the team could be more aggressive.

Jesse: I'm pulling for Shu as much as the next guy but really this doesn't look like it's going to work no disrespect to Shu but more to the Cards for expecting him to be able to do this in just a few months. So with that said the Dodgers according to other sources are thinking about moving Blake Dewitt for right hand bullpen help looks like a good trade partner to me, cheap 2b, local guy, plenty of upside, maybe our 2b for the next 10 years. What do you hear and do you think there is any chance in bringing this Missouri boy back home?
Jeff Gordon: But I don't see where the Cards have the right-handed relief pitching to make that deal. The Cards need to set their bullpen before considering any subtractions from the group.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, are the Rams kidding about signing Ferotte? Bulger is the starter, but he does need some stiff competition. Sims was available, Garcia is out there, The old Jacksonville qb, his name I cant remember. Billy, you might as well have kept Trent Green if your going to sign Ferotte!
Jeff Gordon: Gus wasn't great here two years ago, but he certainly won some big games in Minny.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Please tell me TLR is not seriously considering using Franklin in the 9th. He has proven to be a great setup man and gets rattled when he is moved around to pitch in the 7th or 9th (see 2009). If they are not sold on a definitive closer, doesn't a closer by committee sound more attractive than Franklin? I think TLR and Dunc would be on the something if they used the hot hand or the more likely out in the 9th than a "defined closer."

Between Kyle Mac, Kinney, Perez and Motte, it seems we could get some 9th inning outs. In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing Reyes or Miller get the 9th if the numbers are in the favor. In other words, I'd rather see Reyes closing a game in which Prince Fielder or Ryan Howard is due up...
Jeff Gordon: Tony is just sending a message. He is boosting Franklin, who needs it after a rough patch last year, and he is keeping the kids honest.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, with our parkay butter soft middle on the defensive line, why didn't the Rams even try to talk to Grady Jackson? I know he isn't the greatest, but he is fat enough that even if he fell down he might be able to trip a running back.
Jeff Gordon: Somehow I don't see Spagnuolo looking to add mere fatness to his defensive line.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, Kudo's to Will Witherspoon for going to Iraq. Are the Rams going to move him outside still, cut Hawaii 5-0 and get a real MLB? With all due respect to Spags, this fan base does need a little info to get excited about this team again, you know, maybe buy some team gear or season tickets. I'm not asking for their #2 pick or anything, but some general info on their plans would be nice. Spags doesn't have Bill Belechicks record, and shouldn't act like Bill Belechick when it comes to some team info.
Jeff Gordon: If Spags wants to keep to himself, fine. That's not good for the media, of course, but fans only care about results. Now, if he runs Rams Park like the Kremlin and doesn't succeed, then I'll echo your chorus.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, I want to compliment Billy Devaney and Steve Spagnuolo for not falling in the trap and signing that Moron T. O. I am so sick of hearing about that Clown on tv and nfl radio, you would think he is the only player in this league. Good luck Buffalo, cause your going to need it.
Jeff Gordon: I didn't see a love connection between Spags and T.O. -- who goes against everything the new coach stands for.

RamDynasty: Gordo,
What is the contract status of Alex Barron. Is he a free agent after this season?

Team needs to decide NOW if he is the future left tackle (he has been playing out of position on the right side) or if they want to go a different direction. They cannot wait to decide, if they keep him around he will only cost more to extend if not done now while his value is lower.

He is more of a finesse pass blocker which is fine for a left tackle, a right tackle needs to be a power run blocker especially with the new system.

Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I see Alex playing out his contract and moving on. Based on everything we've seen from him to this point, it's hard to imagine this regime offering him long-term money. He is just buying the organization time to find somebody better.

He could have become a fine right tackle, but he still makes fundamental errors that should have been corrected as a rookie.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

How much of a wakeup call was Skip's game yesterday? Nobody wants this to work more than me, and I'm willing to ride him out for another 2-3 weeks.

There would be a serious hole in the lineup if Skip can't hack it, but putting our franchise player in danger every day doesn't seem worth it. But then again, I maintain that Rickie Weeks would make the same errors. Are we just spoiled with sound middle-infielders here in STL? Let's keep in mind, we were all willing to accept DAN UGGLA at second!
Jeff Gordon: As mu friend Drew says, it's all fun and games until somebody gets hurt. I still expect the Cards to ride this out a while. TLR is pretty stubborn and Skip is a really hard worker.

#1 rams fan in pgh: Gordo,
I'm sure they're exploring it, but shouldn't the rams make it a priority to get atogwe into a more cap-friendly long-term deal? IMHO this is crucial to afford a possible fullback or vetern NT signing! Or does the new regime have some questions about his long future with the rams?
Jeff Gordon: Fullbacks aren't expensive, so don't worry about that. For a lot of reasons, the Rams will want to sign Atogwe long-term into the right deal. The franchise tag can be a bad deal for both sides. Atogwe wants security and the Rams want to pay a more reasonable '09 price for him.

Dixie: Hello Gordo, Which prospects do you see making the team? With the logjam of OF prospects, do you think any will be moved for some infield depth? Thanks for doing the chats, I enjoy them.
Jeff Gordon: Infield depth isn't an issue. 2B could be an issue, if the experiment fails. Unless a team makes a strong offer for Duncan -- giving Chris a chance to DH or play some first base, with lots of at bats -- I see the Cards riding this out a while. Their trade level will grow as more of these players grow.

marctheram: How could the Rams possibly consider Ferrotte? Didn't we go down this route before? What's wrong with Garcia, who has more gamesmanship in his little finger than both Bulger and Ferrotte combined?
Jeff Gordon: Garcia has a history of creating locker room drama. The Rams aren't interested in that.

Phil Berg: Jeff,
What do you realistically see the Cardinals doing this? Given what pitching we have and to hopefully stay somewhat healthy.
Jeff Gordon: If the Cards stay reasonably healthy, they could win in the mid-90s. They already have the Glaus thing to deal with.

I like their ability to spend as needed (as we saw last week) and trade from their surplus as needed. That is a hidden strength, one that few experts will factor in while predicting this team finish fourth again.

Mark in NY: Gordo,

What's with Torry? By telling the media that he wants out, isn't he also telling would-be trade partners that they should wait until he gets released? And why isn't Jerry Jones calling?
Jeff Gordon: Torry has wanted out for a long time, which is why I wasn't among the media types campaigning to keep him. Holt wouldn't mind being released, since he could chart his own course. On the other hand. he may take huge pay cut if he goes that way.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

I'm following up on my question from a month ago (I'm considering MLB Extta Innings, will the Cards be worth the $200?).

It's March 9. Ankiel appears to have brought his bat. Rasmus is gaining confidence. I'm not even going to name names with starting pitching, but you know what is going on. Duncan should be strong off the bench and Mather appears to be the leading candidate at third.

On the other hand, the bullpen is developing very slowly. Nobody is grabbing the 9th inning by the horns (or the 5th, 6th and 7th innings for that matter). Skip continues to do well at the plate and his struggles are more apparent in the field. I'm not excited about the bench players we will be bringing to St. Louis next month (yet).

So a month later, are the Cards worth the commitment?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will be interesting. And if they get a bunch of injuries, at least you will see young prospects filling in as opposed to the Miguel Cairo types.

I like the bullpen now that the lefty thing has been fixed through free agency. As we saw Sunday, Kinney, Perez and Motte are on track on the right side of the bullpen. And I would take an Opening Day bench of Duncan, Barton, Ryan, Thurston and LaRue. Once Glaus returns, Mather would probably bump Barton from that pile.

diggity: Status of Berlin?
Are the RAMS going to bring in a quality QB instead of an automatic back-up. Do the RAMS feel it necessary at all to have Bulger challenged for the starting job?
Jeff Gordon: Apparently the Rams don't believe Bulger needs that challenge. Berlin? Shrug. He barely made the team last year and he is viewed as a No. 3. It's time to draft a No. 3 to develop.

Wade Greenfield: Mr. Gordon,
Respecting the fact that all players have their good or bad days, do you see a recurring pattern of mistakes by Barret Jackman that's hurting the team? Is a plus/minus rating of -16 unusual for a defenseman?
Thank you.
Jeff Gordon: For a Blues defensemen, no, we've see that before. Barret isn't quite a Top 4, Pronger-like workhorse. Matching up against top lines at even strength night after night is tough for him. But I do believe he'll have a place in a defensive unit that will feature Polak, Johnson, Pietrangelo, Colaiacovo and Brewer next season.

Jeff Storey: Hello Jim.

I have a few questions that I would to get ask you?

1. If Detroit does not draft Curry at #1, do you see the Rams seriously drafting Curry at #2 or looking at one of the offensive tackles?

2. If Curry does get drafted #1, do the Rams still look at drafting a OT at #2 or wait until later round 2? On a related note, how does Orlando Pace's future figure into this situation and what is the future of Alex Barron? The Rams have alot of queestions to answer at tackle.

3. Do you think the Rams are consider trading Pisa T. and moving Witherspoon to the weak side linebacker spot? I believe Pisa makes around 4 million dollars which is to much money for a back up linebacker.
Jeff Gordon: We've touched on most of this. If Curry is gone, the Rams might not take a tackle, based on the current evaluations.

adam_cruts: Gordo - thanks as always. At gunpoint, if you had to make your guess today as to who the Cardinals closer is on opening day, who is it?
Jeff Gordon: Opening Day it could be Franklin. Long term, I like Motte the most. He is fearless and has great command. His slider is progressing. But TLR doesn't want to overwhelm the kid on Day 1. He'll get plenty of chances to pitch with men on base.

ballhawk32: Hey Jeff:
Which option do you prefer?
A. Lose Holt (trade or release), keep Pace and draft Crabtree.
B. Lose Pace, keep Holt and draft OT (presumbaly Smith or Monroe).
C. Lose both, and draft Curry #1, OT in Round 2.
D. Lose both, draft OL #1, WR in Round 2.
E. Keep both, and draft Curry #1, OT Round 2.

Thanks for your time.
Jeff Gordon: I'd pick C.

adam_cruts: Jeff, do you think that Schumaker's early misplays at 2nd are making LaRussa reconsider, or do you think that LaRussa already has it ingrained in his mind that Schu is the opening day 2nd basemen pretty much regardless of how he plays defensively, based on the choice of having Schu's bat in that leadoff spot? Having (potentially) that much of a defensive liability to a team of pitchers that are taught to pitch to contact is a real concern, isn't it? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: He wants to see the Skip thing play out. He expects hiccups. Fortunately, this extra-long spring training buys Schumaker more time.

Armen Dacity: What do you think the likelihood is that another team might sign Richie Incognito to an offer sheet and, if it does happen, do you think the Rams would match. In my opinion, if the Rams could get a third round pick for him right now, I'd make that swap. Between Greco and an extra draft choice in the Top 100 picks, I'm sure the Rams could come up with a suitable replacement who does not eat snickers bars during games.
Jeff Gordon: Richie has first round talent, but he is another one of those players who failed to meet their full potential during the 5-27 free fall. He could go someplace else and shine. On the other hand, it's hard to justify paying him large dollars right now -- before he responds to the new coach.

Given Greco's potential, the prior commitment to Bell and the big commitment to fill the center void, your scenario makes sense.

vikelt: Gordo, what do you hear about Jim Edmonds? He made a significant contribution to the Cubs last year. Tho he hit only .256, in 250 ABs he had 19 HRs and 49 RBI, with a .369 OBP and a .937 OPS. Also he is a good tutor for young outfielders. I would have thought that Walt Jocketty would have taken a run at him. For his part, Jimmy Ballgame needs 18 HRs for 400 and Cincy might be a park that would work for him. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: It's a hard world out there. There are a lot of great players on the sidelines. Pedro Martinez, Pudge Rodriguez . . . a lot of guys went unsigned. Jimmy Ballgame might be done. Walt knows that Edmonds needs just the right situation to succeed, as the Padres saw.

Chocolate Thunder: GORDO,
In my opinion Anderson might be better suited going back to the great state of Alabama.
If Mizzou is losing by 8-10 points in a game you can't keep playing the same style of basketball and expect to climb back in the game, that is apparent.
There is also no way you play that style consistently for a 6 game stretch against the best in the country unless you somehow have the best player in the country on your team. It only ever worked for UNLV and yes they had the best player in the country at the time. So Mizzou wins by 10 or loses by 20, you pick. Do you really want another UAB, I don't? I would like a balanced attack myself.
Mizzou is fun to watch when they win and not fun to watch when they get destroyed. I also don't see a bonafide big man coming to Columbia anytime soon either. Run and gun 6-6 to 6-7 guys all day long, not my cup of tea. Do you like this style of play even though it's weaknesses out weigh the positives.
Does coach truly believe his team can play like that night in and night out consistently? I think he honestly does, that's why it would not be such a bad thing to see him go back to Alabama or another opportunity somewhere else..
Can you win the dance with this style?
Thanks for taking my question.
Jeff Gordon: First the Tigers have to get to the dance, which Mike is doing. Given the fact Mike cleaned up a huge mess in three years, I'm shocked fans don't embrace.

If you run Anderson off, after he worked a miracle, which coach would you hire to win Missouri's first national championship?

Missouri will have to become a better road team to contend for bigger things. That is true. But he is using a lot of kids, plus a flighty senior (Lyons) who needs constant attention. If Mike keeps recruiting tough-minded kids willing to compete for playing time, he can run out 10 or 11 kids a game and win.

The Tigers still feed the post. They run a good half-court offense.

airgunner: I am a huge hockey fan and even bigger blues fan. I am enjoying watching all the young talent and the rebuilding our franchise is doing. My question is with all this young talent in our organization, Do you think that the Blues should look to a new head coach next year? I don't think Andy Murray can get this team where it needs to be. He has hit a plateau with his players, and I think that bringing in someone new could better benifit the developement of our young team. Better goaltending has been the key for a lot of our recent success, but I dont see this team being a stanley cup team under andy murray.
Jeff Gordon: I don't know how you can look at what this team has done in the new year -- despite a massive number of injuries -- and draw that conclusion. Andy has clashed with Perron, for sure, but I love what he has done with Berglund, Oshie and Polak. His special teams have been very good. When he has gotten competent goaltending this season, he has gotten results despite missing a big chunk of his talent base.

therealdealankiel: Assuming we take 12 pitchers to St. Louis, and assuming our starting 5 is in good health (fingers crossed), it looks like the BP isn't going to be as cut and dry as some thought.

With 7 BP spots, I presume Kyle Mac, Reyes, Miller and Franklin are locks. 3 remaining...Thompson, as usual, will take the mop up role. This leaves 2 spots for Kinney, Motte and Perez, assuming that guys like Hawksworth or Boggs eventually fall off.

How do you see this shaking out? Even if Motte doesn't pan out as the closer, it's hard to leave a 100mph strikethrower behind. At least with Motte, you know he will throw a strike when one needs to be thrown (see Chris Perez in Boston, June 2008). Perez has exciting stuff and Kinney has proven himself, albeit pre-injury, as a big inning guy with solid stuff.

I know Opening Day is 4 weeks away, but how do you see the BP filling out?
Jeff Gordon: With Perez playing on a bad ankle and demonstrating less command that Motte, he would be the odd man out today. But that can change.

Brian: Jeff,

With the Dodgers being the only team interested in Manny Ramirez why on earth would they continue to offer him that kind of money? Wouldn't they have some kind of leverage since nobody else wanted him?

I was hoping they would stand their ground and in the end making both Boras and Manny look like idiots.
Jeff Gordon: But . . . the Dodgers wanted the guy. He gives them a big hammer for the lineup. If they took a pass, they would take a pass on all those homers and RBI.

So, yeah, Manny won -- although he didn't get the long-term deal he was demanding.

rockintheburbs: Jeff,
Here are the Blues next 7 games in order
At home we play: Dallas-San Jose-Detroit-Minnesota
IN Canada we play: Edmonton-Vancouver-Calgary

How many wins do you think we can get out of these 7
Jeff Gordon: Tough road, for sure. If they win four games, they should feel very good.

Brian: If the hockey season were to end today what draft pick would the blues end up with, and are there any potential stars in the beginning of this draft?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, there are stars in the first round. The Blues are in the process of playing their way into the teens, which makes it harder/

The first overall pick, John Tavares, just set the career OHL goal-scoring record. It would have been nice to get him.

Joe: Gordo,

Thanks for your time. The Rams new brain-trust haven't had a lot of time for the media. Do you think that this is an indication of a hostile approach to the press, or are they just too busy to take the time?
Jeff Gordon: Hostile is a tough word. They are pretty busy and they keep it close to the vest, which is why our beat guys don't have a lot of gossip.

rams26: Hello Jeff -

Any chance we will trade Holt as to just releasing him? Wouldn't it be better to get a 5th rounder rather than just to release him without some sort of compensation? Is our asking price too high right now?

Thanks!

GO RAMS!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Agreed, but that may be easier said than done.

Petey123: Jeff, what's your guess on how ticket sales will be the Rams this season? Will they be able to sell out the home opener this year, after two terrible seasons in a row?
Jeff Gordon: Let's see what they show during camp and the preseason. All the new faces might excite fans.

Jeepster: Jeff: Let's get this out of the way. In regards to Schumaker and secondbase, when will the Cards make a committment to acquire an actual secondbaseman? ...and wouldn't ya know it, they've once again sat around in an attempt to go cheap by attempting to make a 4th outfielder into an infielder and there's not a lot of options left for second since Roberts has re-signed and Hudson has signed on in Los Angeles. What does Mo now do?
Jeff Gordon: If Schumaker can't play second base, then the Cards could play any of the various second basemen they have under contract -- or they could deal from the outfield pile for a guy.

SCOTT RHEIN: Hello Jeff and Thank You for taking my question. What are your thoughts on Tkachuk returning to the team next year? I think he has played great this year and I would like to see him come back. It seams like he likes St. Louis. What are your thoughts?
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Given his willingness to play a blue-collar role, yes, I'd take him back.

cmbaskerville: Hi Jeff,

Do you think that if the Rams pick a OT like Monroe in the draft he can step-in and take over for Orlando Pace? Doesn't it make sense to hold onto Pace for next season until a new rookie can learn the ropes.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, the team could find a starting LT at second overall. Whether that happens, well, we'll see.

gnykin2: I know everyone is rooting for the skipper, and I don't want to get to caught up in a few errors in mid-march, but I want to know what have your reports been? In practices, is he showing consistant improvement?
Jeff Gordon: He's fine in practice. The hard part is reacting under fire. That is the tricky part.

curtism1234: Thanks for taking the time to answer questions

Everyone is talking about the Blues picking up a young backup goalie in the offseason. What happens if Mason gets injured at some point next year while we're competing for a 4th or 5th spot in the conference?

What are the chances the Blues will pick up someone like Kolzig? At 38 years old, Olie the Goalie might be what we need while we wait another year or two to see if Bishop could find himself on this roster full time. Being injured for the rest of the season and never having played a game for Toronto, we might be able to get him at a reasonable price.
Jeff Gordon: Kolzig doesn't excite me. I'd rather see somebody on his late-20s with upside.

sjd: Gordo, I like reading your articles but lately you seem to have some kind of pro-DeWitt agenda and you are not objective. How could a sports writer tell the public that the Cards ownership is not poular but his running of the team is working? The last 2 years the Cardinals have finished under .500 (2007) and 4th place(2008) in a league with 6 teams. This year the verdict is definitely out with no proven 2nd or 3rd baseman and no proven closer. So, with absence of positive results how can you tell the cards fans DeWitts' plan is working?
Jeff Gordon: When you shift gears in 2004 -- and the gear shift is toward player development -- it will take time. As we've seen, the 2005 draft was very good. The young players began arriving last year.

This year you will see pay-off -- unless injuries decimate the team again.

Fans will have a lot less to whine about.

SCOTT RHEIN: Hello Jeff, I have a question on the Blues. During the trade deadline, there was some talk of moving some assests. There was talk of moving Ian Cole or Alex Pietrangelo. Are these guys are ready busts? The Hockey news ranked Alex Pietrangelo number 5 in draft picks. I thought the Blues were looking forward to a powerplay of Erik Johnson and Alex Pietrangelo. What are your thoughts on the future of these guys?
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Pietrangelo has a large upside, but the Blues have a lot of guys coming at the same position. Cole is an offensive-minded guy, too, but not a true PP QB.

There won't be room for everybody at the end of the day.

zenonator: Hi Gordo, Always a pleasure reading your answers to many of our questions. Could you please advise me why the Rams would even remotely consider Ferrotte to fill the shoes of our alterante QB.

Why does the Rams organization settle for clipboard QB's that really can't perform anymore ? Please don't say that they know are "system".

Visions of Ferrotte and Green on our sidelines brings back painfull memories.( If your going to pay someone 2 million to essentially carry a clip board-See Green-Why not allocate this money to groom someone ? We should IMHO draft or aquire a REAL prospect that can compete with our underperforming Mr. Bulger ?
Jeff Gordon: Frerotte was underwhelming two years ago, but he did a real nice at Minny last year. So let's give him that.

Bonehead: It is looking more and more likely that the Rams will just have to release Holt and Pace. Is this true, or is it likely that some team really wants one or both, but is just making the Rams sweat?
Jeff Gordon: It's a game of chicken. And that game with Pace could play out for some time.

mizzourah1986: Hey Gordo,

How come the Big 12 Tourney is starting on Wednesday this year? It always used to start on Thursday and end on selection Sunday.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but I hated that. And when Big 12 teams were on the selection bubble, that was a detriment.

a redbirdfan: The bullpen issue has been somewhat addressed. But now 2nd base seems to be the biggest question mark. I know it is still early, but fans have to be concerned with Skips play at 2nd base.

If Skip just can't make the pivot and play reasonably well, what would be the next best option with the current players? Is MO prepared to look for outside help if needed? If Skip returns to the outfield, who will end up as the outfielders when the team heads north?
Jeff Gordon: Next best option: Ryan, batting ninth.

Bluesier1: Gordo,
Tough stretch coming up for the Blues. They have Dallas, San Jose, Detroit, and Minnesota this week! However, all at home and though they are all good teams, they have not been playing great hockey of late compared to their standards. What do you think the chances are that the Blues get 6 points out of this rough home stretch?
Thanks for you time!
Jeff Gordon: Six points would be great, because getting even two points on the road trip will be tough.

deebox: Hey Gordo how much longer is this stupid idea of making skip play second base. Is it going to get albert hurt or cause the cardinal a important series,or aileantnate the pitchers. This could cost us the division or wild card, i know thats kind of stretchhing it but you get the idea.
Jeff Gordon: Or he could do a solid job, hit .300 and allow the Cards to put more power in the lineup. The experiment isn't over yet.

I might tell Albert that there is no need to dive for balls when the real games are a month off still.

ramholio: Any updates on Ritchie Incognito and Victor Adeyanju's status? Have they taken visits to other teams ?

Thanks,
Brad
Jeff Gordon: Check our Rams blog for updates on that.

eternalramnation: Hey Gordo,

I was looking at the Rams current roster and there's a name listed, C. J. Ah See. He's listed as a DE but who is he? I he just a roster filler who'll be gone by July or is this someone we should have our eye on?
Jeff Gordon: C.J.Ah You's scouting report, from Scouts Inc.

"He comes off the ball high with adequate quickness. He will jump outside to hold the force, but is not in control and can get pushed to sideline. He lacks good strength to shed and can get driven back on run blocks. His first movement is up on pass rush. He has active hands and will slap a lot, but he doesn't really have moves and lacks ability to clear. He will stall versus counter moves. He plays out of control when pass rushing. He is a try-hard camp guy."

Bluesier1: In the last 10 games, has TJ Oshie been the Blues best player? (not counting Mason)
Jeff Gordon: You could make that case. Love that kid!

BillP: Okay Jeff, I just read your artice where you said the Blues had a chance to trade Tkacuck and Perron for Kessel????? It sounds like the Blues passed on this deal, is that true? Again, I don't get it. Here you got Tkacuck, who might very well retire after this season, a guy who conceivably may never score another NHL goal in his life, and Perron, a talented guy yes, but a guy who hasn't turned the corner yet either. I mean Perron just can't escape Murray's doghouse. Up one day down the next. The thought of the Blues passing on this deal is killing me. He would of been a hugh addition to this franchise. Oshie and Kessel on the same line????? I was eating my lunch here at work while I read that, and suddenly I don't feel so good.
Jeff Gordon: I would have made that deal -- and I love Perron. I don't know exactly why it broke down, at the end. Kessel will command a big salary on his next contract, which is a consideration.

BillP: Okay, since you got me here, I got one more question for ya. What does Hockey Guy think about the Penguins? They're hot now and Kunitz and Guerin look like good additions. I think the Pens are back and they have a chance this post-season to repeat as conference champions. What do you think? Thanks - Have a nice day!
Jeff Gordon: I have Marc-Andre Fleury on my fantasy team, so I'm riding high with the 8-1-1 turnaround. They are more explosive now, with Gonchar back and these two new wingers.

Gabriel 2 Snow: How concerned should we be that neither of the Rams new coordinators has held that position before?
Jeff Gordon: There is some concern, but Spags made the jump, did well and became a top head coaching candidate. So we'll have to see how it goes.

Devaney's Brother: Are the Rams and Billy D going to just let Pace and Holt walk without any type of return compensation? On a team that is severely lacking in capable players, it seems these two are definitely still NFL worthy.
Jeff Gordon: But they are eating large dollars. Those large dollars could buy players -- several of them, in fact. Hence the possibility that both could go.

Kevin: Jeff,

Any chance the Cards add another reliever? 3 lefties?
Any chance the Cards pursue Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy?
Any chance the Cards add a 2nd baseman before heading North?

Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: Looking at the current pitching miss, Reyes and Miller would be plenty from left side. That would leave Thompson and Perez gunning for the final bullpen spot.

Kiko Sanchez: Do you think the Rams release Holt before they have to pay his bonus or they pay him hoping they can still make a trade? What would you suggest they do?
Jeff Gordon: If the Rams pay him, that costs the team cap room. So I would expect a decision before then.

Dave From Ohio: Gordo,
Thanks so much for these chats.

Trying not to sound like a homer, but i really thought the Rams would be much more active in FA then they have so far. Brown was a big signing, but that is it. Bartell and Atogwe have been there 4 years so keeping them isn't going to make the team any better.

Do you see anymore FA signing if(after) Holt and Pace are released. Also, when can we expect those 2(holt and pace) issues to be resolved?

Thanks again,
Dave
Jeff Gordon: Remember, the team will keep making additions through the summer. There are still guys out there and there will be second-wave guys out there.

Jayman: Hows it!! Gordo when is the collective bargoning contracts up for baseball and football, and how will the down turn in the economy effect the two agreements?
Jeff Gordon: Let's see what the NFL does with the next CBA. But the cap system works in this scenario, since the cap will come down when revenues shrink. Baseball has no such cost controls. What you would see in the baseball CBA is more teams declining to offer arbitration to some of the older players. And as we've seen, more teams are going are passing on free agent. That market really shrunk.

Lawarence Marmie: Does Tye Hill make the cut as a db for the Rams this year or can we ship him off to Detroit to be with his boy Linny?
Jeff Gordon: Ah, come on, Tye just needs a bit more confidence.

Actually, he is a rehab case. If King can play, that will help. Right now he is just a depth guy.

Go Blues: Hi Gordo-

Thanks for the chat.

Saying what you can, what was the best package offered by the Bruins or any other team for Tkachuk? Should the Blues have taken it?
Jeff Gordon: That Kessel for Perron/Tkachuk was interesting. I would have done that.

Lawarence Marmie: Why is everyone so bummed over the Rams not signing Heath Evans as our fullback? Shouldn't they just count their lucky stars that a talent like Rich Owens is still somehow available?
Jeff Gordon: You are in midseason form!

jpalms11: Gordo is it just me or are you sick and tired of watching Jackman continue to turn the puck over in key situations? It just seems that when we get scored on there is old #5 on the ice. Will this guy ever live up to his lofty contract? Personally I feel he may be the most overrated D-man in the league (certainly well overpaid). I know the Blues have had a lot of injuries on defense this year (EJ, Brewer, Polak, McKee) and Jackman is getting a lot more time than he would otherwise but I think he is no better than a solid #3-4 D-man in the NHL. Looking back I think the Blues should have locked up Salvador and let Jackman walk. Salvy was not as flashy and not as much of a fan favorite (BTW Jackman ROY award was so long ago, enough already) but he was steady and did not continuosly commit costly turnovers like Jackman seems to do almost every game. Thanks for reading my rant Gordo, keep up the good work!
Jeff Gordon: The Florida game was most unfortunate. Barret needs to pull himself together -- the next seven games are rough.

tbux: Gordo- I think we need a DT more than most do- much more so than WR- even if/when Tory leaves- do you agree, and when will be addressed in draft? I think round 2- 3 at the latest.
Jeff Gordon: I like Clifton Ryan's effort, so I'm not sure I'd take a DT over a WR at that point in the draft.

FloTrain: Concerning CMA, I like most people believe that he does in fact leave, this will set the program back pretty far... Not as far as Snyder did, but you almost think some of the Freshmen this year might follow him, just like Tiller did. But honestly, besides leaving to maybe go back his home state, why leave? He built the program in only 3 years and continually improving, getting in all HIS players and their buying in, great facilities, great support from administration and from the sounds of it even State of Missouri politicians. I was shocked when Bernie wrote that Gary Link, a man around the program alot, thinks it's "50-50" he stays or goes, however you look at it.
To me, the fall out would almost be point of no return. What fan/alumni/supporter REALLY wants to deal with this sort of thing again concerning the basketball team? Finally feeling good again about the team and this (potentially) could happen. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I can see the appeal of going back to Alabama. And I can see going some place where he won't feel much heat, ever. He did feel some resistance early on. But I would agree that Mizzou is a great job. Mike has gotten some outstanding recruits pretty quickly. He could really excel here. The upside is limitless. Can say the same about Alabama.

tbux: Most mocks have us taking a OT in round 1- I think if Curry is there, that he fills a greater need and is a safer pick- do you agree?
Jeff Gordon: Agreed.

MT from Pitt, PA: Hello Gordo;

Are the Rams waiting for day of the roster bonus to release Holt? Why are they not trying to restructure his contract? Isn't this as a big hurdle to signing other players like Butler to strengthen the team? What is going on?

Thanks.

MT
Jeff Gordon: They are trying to trade him. He wants out and he refused to redo his deal.

Lawarence Marmie: Has not getting the Rams head coaching position or any other position on an NFL team in any way decreased the fieryness of Jim Haslett?
Jeff Gordon: No! Never!

BBKingBlues: Does Raz make the team if Schu is not a 2nd baseman on opening day?
-Adam
Jeff Gordon: Maybe -- IF he crushes the ball all spring. If Skip goes back to the outfield, that is a heck of crowd. That could change how the team starts the year, while looking to make deals.

BBKingBlues: Watching the WBC really highlights the difference between major league pitching and everything else. It all starts with pitching. Carp sure does look promising, what is your take on his comeback? Can I get excited yet?
Jeff Gordon: Until he stays healthy for a few months, don't get too excited.

John: When are the Rams going to bring in a backup QB that can challange Mark Bulger. There is no competition they just hand it to him? I know you are paying the guy a ton of Money but C'mon ! If he cant get it done find someone who can!
Jeff Gordon: I agree - but the coaches just want a pure back-up. Why?

Curt: Gordo,

How does Barron fit the "4 Pillars"? Being lazy and apathetic does not fit. Are you sure he is on this team after the draft?
Jeff Gordon: Barron sticks, I think, because he provides coverage at a hard-to-fill position. He could still end up on the bench, however.

Jay Zygmunt: Do the Rams miss me yet?
Jeff Gordon: No.

Tim: Do you see the Rams tryining to trade for Shaun Rogers? It would cost draft picks but the dudes a load and exactly what we havnt had and have needed for years. I say do it.
Jeff Gordon: A lot of fans want that element, but I'm sure that's the guy (at his price) for this team.

Tim: Do you see the Rams trying to sign Kalif Barnes?
Jeff Gordon: Maybe . . . but he grades out as just a guy.

Ramfis Benigno: Aloha from Hawaii Gordo... I am just wondering being from Hawaii if The Rams do draft Curry with the second pick, do you think our ex-warrior Pisa Tinoisamoa will get cut or maybe traded? What are your thoughts Gordo? Mahalo, Ramfis
Jeff Gordon: Pisa may not be long for this group either way.

Tim: What sounds more attractive to you?

A,Take Curry in the first Heyward Bey in the second

B,Crabrtee in the first and Larunitis in the second

I heard Larunitis's srock has really dropped so he could be there and Bey might not be there but we may be able to work a deal to move into the first. I thin I like A better
Jeff Gordon: I touched on this earlier -- can't see the team taking two LBs to start the draft.Too many needs.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

How much of an impact does a new defensive position typically have on a guy's offensive performance? Would a guy like Skip really be thinking about those two errors to the point that he whiffs on his next AB?

I love what he brings to the table for the lineup...but if we lose some of that because of poor defensive performance, I'm not sure it's worth it. This isn't a Dan Uggla that guarantees 30 HR's.
Jeff Gordon: Good point -- a defensive struggle can carry over. That is why it will be interesting to see how his spring progresses.

asoprano: Hey Jeff - When are the Rams going to bring in a QB that will give Bulger a little competition they keep bringing in these tools and just handing the job to Bulger. This guy has lost all his confidence and I am not sure he will ever get it back? I know they are paying him a ton of $ but C'mon
Jeff Gordon: C'on indeed. Can't argue.

David Gibbons: Gordo-
If the Rams select Curry at number 2, do you believe that he will play MLB? If they don't take him, who do you see playing MLB next year?
Jeff Gordon: Will could still play MLB in that scenario, since his coach believes he can excel there. But I'd rather see him outside.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

It's reported that the Rams want to trade Holt and Pace. My question is, is there a real market for them? If there is are we asking way too much in return? Any idea what we're looking to get back in compensation?

Reason I ask is that it was reported over the weekend that the Rams are shopping Pace hard yet no one is interested. Then Buffalo signs TO, and the circus that goes with him, rather then looking into Holt.
Jeff Gordon: At this point, a late pick for Holt and a mid-round pick for Pace would be good gets.

rockintheburbs: Jeff,

From a fan to a fan question...... Do you care if basbeall players use steriods or have you become immune to it like i have... I mean A_ROID i saw that one coming. I think it just sucks that these guys have cheated while the old timers worked hard with their natural god-given talent.. Its just a shame i've had to grow up in this greedy chix dig the long ball roiding era
Jeff Gordon: I'm more concerned about play health, and needless health risks, than the purity of the game. I don't want to see guys dying because of this.

Brian White: Jeff, I saw you said earlier that the Cards might not have interest in Durham at this point in his career. I would hope they would take a 2nd look at that; Durham hit .290/.380 in 128 games between SF/MIL. I don't know if he wants an assured starting position but, we don't really have a 2b.
Jeff Gordon: I like Durham, but Tony didn't show much interested in that before spring training.

Ramfis Benigno: Aloha Gordo, Do you think there is still an outside chance we could sign Jeff Garcia as our backup? I think he would definitely be a great addition and make Bulger think twice about someone taking over if he screws up.
Jeff Gordon: No chance. Jeff would not sit quietly.

RamRugger: What do you make of the long history of WR's drafted in the first round not being substantial helps to their team? Torry Holt is the only one out of the last decade or two (I don't remember) to win a Superbowl with his original team. Wouldn't adding help at another position do more good?
Jeff Gordon: Like LB? If Curry is there, I'd do that.

Brian White: What is your opinion on Phil Loadholt, OT from OU? It seemed like every game I saw him play in, he was dominating but he doesn't get much talk. Do they fear he is too slow for the NFL?
Jeff Gordon: Scouts haven't been overwhelmed. But he could be a great later pick.

JerrythePro: Word is Torry may be headed to the Jets. why haven't we even nibbled at a free agent WR..I can't imagine going with Avery, Burton and another rookie. what say you Gordo on the WR front?
Jeff Gordon: They have to do something with Torry before they add any depth there.

Unn: Hi, Jeff,
Do you know anything about Maike Matrz or Jim Haslet employment?
Jeff Gordon: Other than they aren't likely to work this year, no.

That's it for this week. See you Monday!
