Anthony Azzara: Gordo,
Shouldn't the Blues just load the roster with the young prospects (i.e. Linglet, Wowitka, Polak, Walker, Toivenen, Bishop) for the remainder of the year and give the veterans on the team a big break? I think it would benefit the club for various meaningful reasons:
1) Although I don't condone tanking, we are currently the 4th worst team in the NHL right now and falling fast. It's obvious we won't be getting into the playoffs this year so why not see if we can maybe get that first pick and nab Steve Stamkos, a future stud?
2) It gives the front office a nice hard look at how the young ones will respond, especially during this absolutely brutal stretch of road games.
3) It gives the veterans a big, long breather so they can get ready to do some real damage next year.
Wouldn't this seem obvious to the team? We know they're rebuilding and they've shown they can really play on a part time basis. Why not pack it in and get some deadly firepower?
Thanks for your time. |
Jeff Gordon: I'm doing the best I can under tough technical circumstances -- literally working off the top of a trash can outside the Braves' spring training stadium, due to my computer's inability to cope with the ballpark's wireless system.
Sitting Rucinsky is a step in that direction. That should help Perron see more action. It's good to see Woywitka get to play a lot. And I would like to see Linglet get a look. But don't forget, the AHL playoffs will have some value, too. If the Rivermen make it, the Blues would like to load up that team for some extra work. |
|
drelboc: Hey Gordo;
Is Adam Kennedy pressing down there?
If Joe Mather's bat is ligit where would he play in the field as a "starter"? 3rd and 1st are not going to move. Does he have any experience at 2nd?
Thanks Jeff! |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes, Kennedy is pressing. And he can't afford to, unless he wants to collect the rest of his contract at home. As for Mather, he could be a Spiezio-type at some point, minus the ability to hit both sides of the player. Nice bat and he can play the corners, infield and outfield. |
|
| robert sanders: With as many unhealthy arms in camp as we have, at least giving Ponson a minor league contract might help. Looper looked BAD today. In my opinion Ponson would/could get us innings until some healhy arms return. I doubt those with arm trouble will all return to form quickly. SURRENDERING twenty runs should wake up team management.Maybe Lohse orhealthy arms can give competitive innings. |
Jeff Gordon: Signing another guy back in February would have been a good idea. But now it's not going to help much.
By the time you get Ponson is game-ready shape, odds are that Clement and/or Mulder could be ready. Anybody you sign now would have to start a throwing program almost from scratch. There is no reason to believe the team will need a Ponson-type pitcher for the last two-thirds of the season. |
|
| Tiger J: Good afternoon Jeff, think the rams could trade the 2nd pick for Roberson and the 6th pick in the draft. Then say pick up Gholston. Just imagine Robertson, Little, Carriker and Gholston. I like that front 4. Second round grab an OL, still good ones not great but good ones. Then say trade a 4th round pick for a receiver with some speed. |
| Jeff Gordon: Sounds like a plan -- but you have to convince other teams to play along. I do think that trading down would be a good idea for the reason you mention. But do other teams really value that No. 2? We'll see. If a team really fell in love with Ryan or McFadden, that would help. |
|
Gabriel to Snow: Gordo, I was heartened to see your comments about Saunders play book. Especially about his creativity in the running game. Jackson could have a huge year if we stay healthy. Saunders also made excellant use of his tight ends & McMichael could be key. Becht is a solid addition. Why we continually had Klop in there on running downs I'll never know. He was willing, but was constantly steamrolled. He was never expected to be a great blocker when drafted.
We are getting closer. Depth at OT, draft a WR, & there starts to be a reason for optimism. My big concern is Bulger. Can he lose the yips he developed last year? He is never going to earn his keep being a field general, he has always been the silent but deadly gunslinger. We can only hope his confidence in the upgraded protection allows him to return to form. By the time you answer this, Trent will hopefully be on board & I totally agree with our attempt to reel him in. Your thoughts?
Also, I am looking forward to seeing Draft make us wonder why he wasn't starting over Chillar. My hope is we will see McGarigle earn a chance for some LB play. He is a tackling machine. He has always been great on game days & average in practice. You would think they would give the greatest tackler in the history of college football a couple of Sundays in the regular season to see if they have a gem hiding on their roster. Do you have any read on the staffs expectations for him? Thanks
P.S. Thanks Ike, you are one of the greatest Rams of all time. You should still be one. At least Bruuuuuuuuce will echo in the ED once this year! Let's just hope it's in an entertaining but losing effort for you & Mad Mike. |
| Jeff Gordon: Saunders ran the ball well in KC with different types of backs. Holmes was an all-purpose guy, like Faulk. Johnson was a pure power runner, a guy that grew into that role. Saunders could have helped the Redskins IF he had a QB and some freedom. Here, he has to get Bulger back to getting the ball out quickly with confidence. |
|
Tim: Jeff,
Thanks for taking my question. Why doesn't Andy Murray reunite the line of Tkachuk/Kariya/Boyes? This was the only line that clicked at any time this season. I understand that Murray wants to spread out the scoring, but every combination he has come up with doesn't work. I would rather have 1 line that scores instead of 4 that do not. 8 goals in 8 games is pitiful. |
| Jeff Gordon: He will keep shuffling and shuffling. Tkachuk helped fill the center void for a while and that was a good set up, since Kariya helped with the playmaking. But playing center is a chore for Keith. More recently, Murray like him as the power forward getting in on the forecheck. |
|
| mike: what are the chances that dallas trades their two number ones for ours to get mcfadden and we then have numbers 22 28 and 33 all still good picks mike |
| Jeff Gordon: In other years, trading way down for multiple picks might make sense. But this team would have to pass on several impact defensive linemen to go that route. Later in the round, they could get a WR and an OT. IF this team made a free-agent score to get a pass rusher, this scenario could look more feasible. |
|
| Tackleberry: What are the chances that the Rams at least consider Pacman Jones? I realize that with his recent legal problems this seems like a marginal idea at best. However, the Rams secondary is marginal at best and the last thing we need is another rookie to add to the quanity, not quality, of defensive backs on this team. I recognize the need to be fiscally responsible, but 3 wins usually justifies some carefree/careless spending. Unless of course that Haslett has ordered more smoke and more mirrors for 2008 and Linehan is ready to put his house up for sale. |
| Jeff Gordon: Desperate times call for desperate measures, but I believe Pacman need to go somewhere with a strong head coach and strong president willing to keep a thumb on him. |
|
Tackleberry: Don't
Expect
Wins
In
Two-thousand and eight
Thanks Bill! |
| Jeff Gordon: You have the signs painted up already? After getting a whiff of the optimism down in Florida, I believe this team could actually get to the high side of .500 with a break or two. But I still like the Brewers to win the division and the Cubs to take a big run too. |
|
| D. Ippensen: Should we be concerned about our middle infield as it sets right now ? Any hope for change ? |
| Jeff Gordon: Izturis can field. He's a veteran. He'll do that much, anyway. But I'm Brendan Ryan, I'm sniffing opportunity. |
|
DocHal: Jeff,
What's up with Dominique Byrd and Claude Wroten? Will either or both of these underachievers be traded or released any time soon? Also, how do you think the acquisition of Anthony Becht affects Joe Klopfenstein's job security?
BTW, I really enjoy your columns. |
| Jeff Gordon: Perhaps the best way to purge underachievers is to torment them on the practice field during camp, then send them on their way. That way you can at least make an example of them in front of the group. |
|
ctramsfan: Jeff, what are the Rams going to do with their linebacker situation? They have a hole with Chillar probably departing in free agency. I was hoping that they would sign Landon Johnson but that obviously didn't happen, so what do you see them doing?
Thanks for your time. |
| Jeff Gordon: Draft steps up to a starting role. I still see them signing and drafting depth there, with the hope of generating some competition. |
|
ctramsfan: Jeff are the Rams looking at any other free agent options at this point?
Thanks for your time. |
| Jeff Gordon: As Linehan always says, it's a year-long process. There are still some intereting guys out there and we could see second-wave free agents later this year when teams turn guys loose after the draft, |
|
ctramsfan: Jeff, do you see the Rams trading down in the draft to try and get Vernon Gholston or do you see them staying put and taking Chris long if he is available, Jake Long, or Glen Dorsey? If Chris Long is there, I would like the Rams to grab him. But if he is not I believe they should trade down, gather some extra picks and take the next best pass rusher in the draft because that is the Rams' most glaring need. I see Gholston turning into a DeMarcus Ware or Shawne Merriman type player which is exactly what the Rams need: a huge pass rusher.I am not a big fan of Dorsey because of his injury problems and because he does not fit what the Rams are trying to do defensively. If they drafted him, they would have to move Carriker over to end and he's not an impact end in this league. So the Rams would have the same glaring need next year and I'm not sold on him. Im not sold on Jake Long either because they already have Pace and Barron and the need for tackle can be addressed later in the draft. What do you see them doing?
Thanks for your time. |
| Jeff Gordon: Moving down to No. 5 or No. 6, for the right offer, would make sense for the reason you stated. It will be interesting to see how the market for that pick changes as teams get a better read on the top-of-the-draft prospects. |
|
| ctramsfan: Jeff, I have heard that the Rams are interested in trading for Lito Sheppard. Is there any truth to this and if there is do you see the Rams trading for him? |
| Jeff Gordon: Sure, that makes sense. But trading Torry Holt for him and a No. 1 pick doesn't make sense. |
|
| TennCardfan: The Cardinals are not really considering keeping Juan Gonzalez if it means losing Schumaker or Barton, are they? |
| Jeff Gordon: Excellent question. Now that Tony isn't using the DH anymore, Juan Gone must prove he can play the outfield. Is he competent out there? Can he do it without hurting himself? Barton offers speed and a right-handed bat. Skip offenss solid defense and lead-off potential while Rasmus learns. To keep Barton at Triple-A, the Cards would have to make a trade with the Indians. |
|
| cracengl: So are Kennedy and Izturis really that bad? Or is it too early in spring to tell? |
| Jeff Gordon: He is struggling mightily at the plate. He is working hard, so La Russa has no beef there. But Aaron Miles has to like his chances of getting some at bats. |
|
| Gabriel to Snow: Gordo, if Bulger was to suffer another concussion & retire due to it's effects, what % of his contract does he receive & how is it counted against the cap? |
| Jeff Gordon: There are a lot of ways that could play out. But the chances of Bulger being wiped out by one more hit are remote. usually it takes a series of injuries over a long time to convince a QB to pack it in. Marc isn't close to that. Heck, Trent Green is still going. |
|
Catman: Gordo,
THanks for your invaluable insight. I've got a few questions for you...
Who do you predict will bat leadoff on opening day...Schumaker or Barton, or someone else??
With Juan Gonzalez most likely making the 25 man roster, which young player(s) who played a lot last year will be sent down? They wouldn't send Ludwick to Memphis would they?
I think Brandon Ryan should be given the starting SS position? What do you think?
Thanks O Wise One... |
| Jeff Gordon: If Juan Gone made the team -- a big if -- that could come at Ludwick's expense, since both guys are power guys. Barton offers speed. But I think Skip is the logical leadoff guy if Rasmus isn't ready. |
|
Superjim: Hey Gordo,
These Torry Holt rumours...I think they might be true. I know it sounds crazy, but releasing Isaac probably riled Holt and as he was clearly already disenchanted with the organisation (Steelers game) he may want to leave, giving him another shot to win the Superbowl before he retires. Cincinnatti are one team who have been linked, is a possible deal Torry plus our 1st rounder for Houshmandzadeh and their 1st rounder? We then try to draft Gholston and get a terrific receiver in return. Sounds at least feasible?
Thanks Gordo |
| Jeff Gordon: Saunders ought to fix Torry's unhappiness. A bigger issue for the Rams or any other team is the knee problem, which will only get worse. If you want to be callous about it, this might actually be a good time to move him. |
|
| Geno: Do you think any trade talks for either Holt or Jackson are in the works? |
| Jeff Gordon: Trading Jackson would be nuts. The Rams need to lock him into a long-term deal and let him run behind a much-improved line for a coordinator capable of maximizing his potential. |
|
Cole Kutz: Jeff....
With Barton apparently getting better, and Mather and Schumaker each having a good spring, who do you see as the outfielders on the roster on opening day?
Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: It may be early for Mather, since he could benefit from more time at Memphis. But he is becoming a front burner guy in the case of injury. There is more urgency to check out Barton, because of the Rule 5 draft rules. |
|
| mr. starks: If we could get a trade for Lito Sheppard, what do you think we would have to give up? |
| Jeff Gordon: That's a hard deal for the Rams, since their top draft pickk have such value. Other teams might make a better fit. |
|
Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff, I really enjoy your Monday chats. I have some questions about the draft and junior guys in the system.
1. How deep is this years draft.
2. I know we have one first round pick, with the way the Blues are playing now, will we get another one?
3. Do you think we will be in the top 10 or 5?
4. Will the Blues draft by position or top pick?
5. What is our top need at the draft?
6. Is there a player in this years draft that stands out to you as some one we need to get?
7. Do you see use trading away Martin Rucinsky or any other player that is not performing?
8. What are the rules as far as bringing players up from the farm team? I read that we are limated now after the trade dealine.
Thank You for your time.
Scott |
Jeff Gordon: The trade deadline is gone, so Rucinsky has no value as a chip. And he has no value as a player, since he is just getting in the way at this point.
This is a deep draft and the Blues will get an impact guy in the first round. Given their organizational depth on defense, I would expect them to take a scoring winger, if possible, or a potential No. 1 center. It's a little early to project that -- and as we saw last year, most of the expert projections missed by a lot. |
|
sean: Gordo,
So what next, the Draft? Are we looking for a veteran at center, Receiver, and Quarterback? Or relying on the Draft.
How do you stack the Rams top five picks as of right now for that #2 pick? I like C. Long, V. Gholston, J. Long, S. Ellis, then Dorsey (injury history). |
| Jeff Gordon: Still looking at all available means, free agency, draft and trades. There is a lot that could happen. |
|
| Jeff Wade: With Bruce gone the Rams now need WR bad in draft. Picture this, Jackson out for a game and Holt double teamed,or Holt out and Jackson running every down with 7 in the box. Saunders is good but he needs tools. |
| Jeff Gordon: And there is still plenty of time to add those tools. |
|
Organic Meatbag: Jeff,
Based on the story from Sunday shooting down any trade rumors involving Torry Holt, is it fair to speculate that Torry might be going into the new season somewhat disgruntled? I know that he certainly deserved to be upset about last year and the release of Issac isn't going to make him any happier, but with Al Saunders in the fold, and things finally looking a little brighter for the Rams, I sure hope that he'll go into the new season a little refreshed and ready to roll. |
| Jeff Gordon: If the Rams can add another weapon or two and get Bulger fired up this off-season, that should help Torry believe again. After last season, who can blame him for being frustrated? |
|
| ted: hey gordo, whats the latest scoop do u think anthony becht could line up on the other side of mcmichael and be effective. I know when he was drafted by the jets they expected big things from him and he didn't really pan out. With the schedule for this year i know it's probably to early to tell but do u think they can be contenders again. I think and hope they can. thanks Gordo |
| Jeff Gordon: They could get to 8-8 because any team can get to 8-8 by staying reasonably healthy and making a few breaks. Becht will certainly shore up the blocking and he's not a bad short-yardage target. |
|
| petey: Is it just me or has the rams only really upgraded the OG spot and the back-up TE spot so far in FA? Why was there no moves for a FA DE since we cut Hall? Do they really see Adyenju as the starter or are they set on someone in the draft to fill that need? |
Jeff Gordon: Odds are, that top draft pick will go for a defensive lineman. And don't forget, the Rams did upgrade at kicker. So there's that.
But it's early folks, it's early. |
|
James Griffin: hey jeff,
with chillar likely gone, do you see the rams drafting a LB high, or are they sold on culberson and draft to fill that spot?
Also, What does the signing of Becht mean to Klop? Byrd must be out....
Any news on Trent Green? |
| Jeff Gordon: Culberson and McGaricle showed that young LBs can come develop when given time. I see the Rams adding a couple more guys like them -- perhaps a bit higher in the draft -- to make sure there is competitive depth. There are also depth guys remaining in free agency. |
|
| Bryan: Any word on what the Rams are going to do about the WR position. Do you know if they are going to trade for anyone? If not do you know who they are looking at in the draft? |
| Jeff Gordon: Free agency for receivers was nuts. The money Walker got in Oakland was crazy -- and that does make it a bit harder. As for the draft, I'd rather see them take a OT with the second pick, unless all the top ones are gone. Then WR becomes a priority. |
|
| ramfan njersey: with the rams moves they are taking a d linemen over jake long in the draft i want glen dorsey and move adam over to de with c.ryan and doresy in the middle are run game would be tough and big. im hearing the gholston kid from miami i say take doresy would do you think they would and should do |
| Jeff Gordon: Dorsey is exciting, as long as you are 100 percent sure he is healthy. But I'd be concerned about the outside pass rush with Carriker and Adeyanju playing DE. A pass-rushing DE is such a big need. |
|
| Scott L: The Doug Weight trade coincided with the beginning of the end of the Blues playoff run. Clearly as players MacDonald was the better near and longer-term option, but it has been suggested that Weight’s locker room presence was significant. Is there something about the room that is worth noting, the slippage in their game both defensively for a long stretch and offensively for much of the year, their later quest for a captain, and not to mention Bernie’s comments about Murray and the locker room, all appear to suggest a possible issue? |
| Jeff Gordon: Weight was pretty unhappy, so I'm not sure his exit was negative that way. Had he stayed, his negativity could have become an issue. He wanted a bigger offensive role. In Anaheim, he is more content to play a role on a team with a chance to repeat as Cup champions. |
|
| LindaLou: Is there any hope for the Cardinals' infield (other than Albert)? I wish we could convert Shu or Barton to second or short but I guess there is no hope of that! |
| Jeff Gordon: Schumaker is an old shortstop, but he isn't moving to the infield. As I noted earlier. Ryan needs to keep grinding away -- good things could happen for him if he sticks with it. |
|
Ray: Jeff, thanks again for answering our questions.
With Chillar probably gone, are the Rams looking at any free agent LBs? I know the free agent market is slim, but a guy like Takeo Spikes could be a short term fix.And what are the chances of OJ Atogwe coming back? I really think they should hold on to him and not make the same mistake as in the past of letting good, young, defensive guys go. And last, any news about WRs, trades or maybe 2nd round of draft? the thought of going into the season with just Looker and Bennett alongside of Holt scares me.
Thanks again |
| Jeff Gordon: Linehan has worked hard to keep key players. He pushed for Pisa's new deal and he wants Atogwe. The Spikes thing reminds us that seeking personnel is a year-round endeavor. You never know when guys might become available one way or another. Fans shouldn't assume the Rams are done shopping. |
|
Brian from Vegas: Gordo,
I thought Incognito played well at center. Why not move him there and play Setterstrom at right guard? That gets the 5 best offensive lineman on the field. |
| Jeff Gordon: Richie could be a fine center, although that position doesn't allow him to use his aggression. This team needs Richie's toughness at guard, but with fewer personal foul penalties. |
|
Buzz: Gordo,
It's happening again! Players like Vernon Gholston are moving up NFL draft boards after great performances at the Combine. How often have players disappointed in the NFL after being drafted higher than expected based on a workout? To me, a 40 time can be used to see if a college corner has the minimum speed to make it in the NFL at that position. But you should never move a guy up your board after an impressive workout if his play on tape doesn't merit it. Maybe use Combine performance as a tiebreaker. Can you help stop the hype? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: I agree totally. Players also fall because of their combine showing - and then they turn out to be productive players. Why? Because they are good football players. They compete. They are instinctive. They are tough. You can't learn this stuff in a workout. |
|
Dave Pietrowski: Jeff:
More great columns as always.
It may be too soon to ask this question but here goes any way. If Adam Kennedy does not improve at the plate do you think the Cardinals will eat his salary and release him rather than bring him north after spring training ?
Thanks for your time.
Dave |
| Jeff Gordon: His contract will buy him a little extra time, because Ryan can go down to Memphis. But he won't get extending playing time if he's not hitting. La Russa is not going down that road again. |
|
Chris: Gordo:
As always, kudos to you for answering our questions. For myself this morning, I have two:
1) What are the viable options at backup QB if Trent Green doesn't sign with the Rams? Do we look at FA or the draft?
2) There's a lot of talk on the boards about us drafting a Wide Receiver with our 2nd round pick - what about the rookies we drafted last year? I don't feel they got a legit chance to show their talents on game day(s) - is there one or two of them that are ready to move at least into the #3 or #4 spot (I'm thinking Hagans and Stanley - possibly Dane Looker as well - I know, he's not a rookie) that would allow us to focus on a safety or linebacker with our 2nd round pick (maybe grab a raw speed guy in the 4th or 5th round and develop him)?
Thanks again! |
| Jeff Gordon: The QB class of free agents was thin, which is why Green got such great play. Collins was the other guy Saunders really liked. At WR, Stanley will get a good look based on his late success last year. But the team does need to beef up the position, perhaps with one solid veteran and one draft pick. |
|
YoMurphy: Hi Gordo, Thanks for the chat.
Do you think this years NFL draft is deep enough with Al Saunders "type" of receiver? Does he have a specific type? Most importantly, is Will Franklin his type, and is round 3 too soon to take a receiver like Will who has the tools, but not the production?
Finally, I think everyone in the league expects us to take either Jake Long or the best D-line player at #2 overall, with most leaning toward the latter. If this happens, I see us pigeon-holed by a need to take the best OT available. There are a lot of team who really need OL help, so this could mean are left with the 7th or 8th best OT in the draft at #33 overall. If Carl Nicks is one of those, great, otherwise, I have seen a lot of "zone blockers" at this level, like Sam Baker from USC or guys with college production who flopped at the combine like Gosder Cherilus.
My point is that #33 overall is a great chance to get first round talent at a bargain price, and OT does not seem to be a position where this will happen.
Are we in deep trouble if we pass on an OT in the first two rounds? |
Jeff Gordon: There is definitely a cutoff at OT in this draft. The Rams can't reach for a guy with that second-round pick if the top guys are all gone. They need to take a WR instead.
And as for the WRs, a speed guy like Franklin could help they mix. The Rams have a big guy already with Bennett. And Holt runs routes as well as anybody. |
|
Loren: I cannot believe Isaac is a 49er. My worst nightmare has come true. I was really hoping he would retire a Ram. First and foremost this is a business and I understand that. I still love you Isaac good luck except against us. What I want for Christmas is a DE that can produce sacks and a wide reciever that can stretch the field. I would however bolster the line of scrimage with the first pick. Either side of the ball is fine with me.
Boiseramfan |
| Jeff Gordon: It's hard to argue with that! |
|
Zac- Humboldt, TN: Gordo,
Do you see Jamie Perez making the team at the end of spring training? I have noticed how much he can help our rotation. Nice fastball reaching the low to mid 90s and a hard breaking curveball. I hope the Cards front office does not waste the opportunity to win some games this season with this kind of pitching doewn in the minors. |
| Jeff Gordon: Jamie Garcia is the pitcher you're thinking about. Chris Perez is a relieve with potential closer stuff. By 2009, he'll be a factor. Garcia could move onto the front burner with a good start at Springfield or Memphis. He is a Duncan-type pitcher, capable of getting groundouts. |
|
| Randy F: With Izturis hitting below 200 while committing errors and Kennedy continuing to play like he did in 2007 can we afford to keep both of them on the team although Izturis is guaranteed 2.8 this year and Kennedy is getting around 7 mil over the next two. What do you see happening at these two possitons? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Cards will eat salary if they have to. Izturis will get every chance to stick because of his career defensive achievements. But if he fails, he fails. Kennedy has a shorter leash because of his season-long failure last year. |
|
Zac- Humboldt, TN: Hey Gordo,
Do you have any idea if the Cardinals will have the Prime Seat Club again this year to purchase tickets from season ticket holders? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes, the Cards will remain in the secondary market for tickets. I'm surpised it took so long for teams to tap this market. |
|
| Randy F: Can you see the outfield shaping up as Ankiel, Schumaker,Duncan,Barton,Ludwick and with his versatility Joe Mather? Is Juan Gonzalez chances to make the team slipping away with the good play of the others? |
| Jeff Gordon: Mather is really helping himself, but I don't see the team rushing its decision on him. Ludwick should have an inside track on one of the five jobs, because of what he did last year. Juan Gone has a big job ahead because the Cards aren't eager to lose a younger player to make room for him. |
|
| Francisco Prado: Gordo, My opinion on the Rams 2nd overall pick all depends on what the Dolphins do with the 1st pick. For example, they chose QB Matt Ryan and that gives us the opportunity to select Chris Long, since DE is our most preesing need. If the Dolphins select Chris Long then I think the Rams should pick Jake Long, which OT is another need that we have. Either way we fill a need in the 1st Rd. with an impact player that we need. There is no doubt that this is an important draft for the Rams, which is why you build a team through the draft instead of overspending in free agency on players that many times do not live up to the money they're given. |
| Jeff Gordon: If Chris Long goes, there would be great consideration to moving down a few spots and taking the next best available defensive lineman. |
|
Jeremy (Denver): Gordo,
Really appreciate the chats, especially during the Rams off-season. 2 parter here...
1) Any idea what the Rams plan to do at C?
2) If they had to pick one, do you think they prefer: Incognito or Setterstrom at C?
Thanks! |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd pick Setterstrom and keep Richie at guard. The Rams may still put a natural center into the mix to maintain competition. |
|
Jeremy (Denver): Gordo,
Just wanted to share an observation...everyone says how St. Louis is a baseball city...and maybe it is, I obviously don't live there...but it's interesting to me that when you do these chats, the number of Rams questions/comments far outweigh the other sports in your town. I'd bet if you went back and counted, you'd find that all of the other sports combined don't equal to the number of Rams questions/comments you get. Rams nation is alive and strong baby! |
| Jeff Gordon: True, but Joe Strauss gets crushed with baseball questions on his chats. He could spend all day on them. The interest in these teams is equally strong. |
|
| Chris van Ooyen: Now that Boyes has his contract, what kind of numbers do you see him putting up through the life of the contract? Also, is it just me or is seeing a possible number one pick make losing all thses games seem some what bearable. Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: This is a deep draft, though, so the incentive to keep losing isn't that great. With so many young players on hand for the Blues. they need to learn to win. As for Boyes, he ought to be a steady 30-goal guy. |
|
| Mike in MD: I like the signing of Bell and I'm glad they got him instead of Faneca. He's younger, is still growing as a player and comes quite a bit cheaper. Since it looks like the O-line is shaping up nicely (other than the center position), how does that effect the Rams draft plans? Will the d-line be the focus? I can see them using their first two picks in that area to really shore up that unit. What do you think? |
| Jeff Gordon: OT is still a possibility with either the No. 1 or No. 2. But defensive line is now the No. 1 need. |
|
Armen Dacity: Gordo,
While I don't think the Rams should get into a bidding war or overpay for Brandon Chillar's services, it seems like they have not even made him an offer. Am I right about that and, if I am, why not at least put an offer out there? He's not a world-beater, but he's a solid performer and the Rams are not all that deep at LB. |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams sensed early on that Chillar would get offers exceeding their opinion of him. And it appears they are right. I didn't mind him last year, but I don't know that he merits a big investment. |
|
Todd: Do you think the Vashon basketball program should have to bus in only white players for their basketball team next season? That would assure them a losing season.
I hope they don't punish the current program there for past infractions by the coach.
Webster Groves did show that it is possible to shut down a couple great players for at least 1 game. I was suprised McCluer didn't run more low screens to get the big fella open, they just collapsed on everyone that went into the paint. Do you think if they played again, it would be the same outcome? |
Jeff Gordon: There are plenty of good players in the county, white and black. Irons would appreciate the busing reference, because he objected to county schools getting to poach city kids. In his mind, he could justify adding kids from around the area.
The state association will punish past teams for past crimes if it takes away titles. If those teams used ineligible players, then they should vacate the crowns. |
|
| corey: play gm.what would you do in the offseason if you were the blues. |
| Jeff Gordon: Overall, stay the course. Play the kids. Try to move McKee if another team would take him. Find a capable backup goaltender to push Toivonen. Add a mid-level scorer in free agency to replace Rucinsky. Draft scorers. |
|
Randy: Hey Gordo,
I love these chat sessions!!! With the NFL draft approaching and the Rams in ability to attract decent free agents, here is how I personally would draft for the Rams. With the #1 pick take Gholston from Ohio State. He seems to have more ability and a better athelete than Chris Long. With the second pick we need to find a replacement for Bruce which I would select WR Hardy from Indiana. He is a big stong wide out the Rams have not had in awhile. I personally think he would be a Placixdo Burress type of receiver. With the 3rd pick they need to take the best OL out there. After that just draft the best available that you can find. What are your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't take your DE with the second pick. I would move down for that. I don't see him going No. 2. |
|
steve: Jeff,
What exactly to you think we can expect from Ankiel and Duncan this year? |
| Jeff Gordon: Duncan could have a huge HR year, with solid RBI. Ankiel could hit 30 homers with a ton of doubles and a few SBs. Rick will strike out a lot, but he should still hit .270 with some infield hits. Both will get into funks, but their bottom line ought to be good. |
|
| Eric Mayfield: Is the organization still looking into signing any more starting pitchers, and if so, is Kyle Lohse on the list of pitchers being pursued? |
| Jeff Gordon: He went from being an overpriced FA to an overpriced FA unable to help a team until May. The Cards exp3ct to be fine by May. April is the hard part. |
|
| Mory Mickens: Why arent the rams interested in obtaining cornerback D'angelo Hall from the falcons . He's probably going to end up being traded for little or nothing ! |
| Jeff Gordon: Atlanta's original asking price was quite high, a No. 1 pick. |
|
Chris: Hey Gordo!
What do you think of the Rams taking Gholston in round one, their highest rated WR in round 2, and an OT in round 3? Do you think they'll get better value taking an OT in round 3 than round 2? Do you think Early Doucet or Limas Sweed might be available in round 2? |
Jeff Gordon: The dream is to get a first-round caliber guy with that No. 2 pick. After that, the value drops/ You could probably land some depth later.
|
|
| Web in Spfd: Apologies if you've answered this: Any predictions on where we'll finish in the West? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams? Right now it's hard to see better than 8-8, given the Niners upgrades and the Cardinals progress. |
|
| paul jazz: Why did the Rams over pay for a guard the way they did, if he was the second coming of John Hannah maybe? Also if he was that good Jeff Fisher would have kept him. |
| Jeff Gordon: Did you see the free-agent pricing? It was nuts. That was not a terrible price, compared to what Walker and Berrian got at WR. The Rams got a useful, prime-age lineman with some upside and versatility. They did pay premium, but such is life in the NFL these days. The huge salary cap makes bargain hunting tough. |
|
| El Centro Ram Fan: Thanks for taking the time, Gordo. I was listening to Marshall Faulk on the NFL Network the other day when they did the Rams' "State of the Franchise". He echoed what I've heard from a lot of fans and media that Witherspoon would be better suited for the outside. Have you heard any discussions on what the Rams' plans are in this area? Are they looking for a run-stuffing middle linebacker at all? |
Jeff Gordon: There's no question the Rams found something with Witherspoon's outside pass rush. Yet Haslett still defends his work on the inside. Ideally, the team would add some beef in the middle - but that may not be possible this offseason.
Haslett may have to get creative and move Will around, like last year. |
|
Bob pokey: Jeff: Do you think there is any chance that the Cards could go north with 5 outfielders, with the shape the pitching is in???? Was just wondering about infield depth and an outfielder being that player.
Thanks for your time...Sure enjoy your column...
Bob |
| Jeff Gordon: Mather could help the equation, since he can play the corner infield spots, ala Spiezio. But I like the five-man outfield, since Barton and Ludwick/Juan Gone would add good offensive elements behind Duncan, Schumaker and Ankiel. But what about the infield? Interesting dilemma. I like Ryan as a utility guy, but the team may want him to get a bunch of at bats at Memphis. In reality, the answers may still lie outside the organization. |
|
| Lenn from Miami,Fl: it looks to me that the rams are setting up to pick chris long with the first pick do the rams go wr with the second pick and who will be there @ that pick? |
| Jeff Gordon: Hardy, the 6-5 1/2 receiver from Indiana, is on the bubble at that point. Maybe he goes at the end of the first round, maybe not. OT Samuel Baker is in the same spot. Do the Rams go OT or WR here? There out to be good players in both positions. |
|
| Aaron: How many extra infielders/outfielders will make the team? Who do you see making it? |
| Jeff Gordon: Really tough call. I agree that taking 12 pitchers is wise, given the rotation uncertainties. Even with a few off-days and rainouts, the bullpen could get worn. Today, I like a five-man outfield (Duncan, Schumaker, Ankiel, Barton and Ludwick/Juan Gone) and a six-man infield (Glaus, Izturis, Kennedy, Miles, Pujols and Ryan.) Duncan backs up first base. |
|
ec: Hey Gordo,
Do you know what this year's NHL draft is like this year. I'm wondering if I should be hoping that the Blues tank so they can draft a Patrick Kane type player.
Also, it seems like the Blues started to fall apart after the Weight/McDonald trade. Do you think the leadership/intensity of team suffered with the loss of Weight.
Thanks |
Jeff Gordon: I address the Weight thing earlier -- to me, he was an unhappy player not adding much at the time of his exit. I'm not sure how much leadership he could have provided down the stretch because of that.
Here is the International Scouting Service top 10 prospects:
1.Stamkos, Steven C 5.11 178 R 2/4/90 Sarnia
2.Filatov, Nikita LW 5.11 159 L 5/25/90 Moscow CSKA-2
3.Doughty, Drew RD 5.11 213 R 12/8/89 Guelph
4.Hodgson, Cody C 5.11 182 R 2/18/90 Brampton
5.Pietrangelo, Alex RD 6.03 192 R 1/18/90 Niagara
6.Beach, Kyle C 6.03 202 R 1/13/90 Everett
7.Bogosian, Zach RD 6.01 185 R 7/15/90 Peterborough
8.Schenn, Luke RD 6.02 210 R 11/2/89 Kelowna

10.Boedker, Mikkel LW 5.11 196 L 12/16/89 Kitchener |

| RamFanInPA: What is your early impression of Bill Devaney? Does his hiring make it more likely that the Rams will draft for the best player long term instead of an immediate impact "need position" player to try and help save Linehan's job? There is a difference im my opinion. Thanks. |
Jeff Gordon: No, the focus will be on making the Rams better for the long haul. However, the NFL does stand for Not For Long. There is urgency to make big strides right away. Chip Rosenbloom wants it and the business side of the franchise wants it as much as Linehan.
In this sport, quick turnarounds are commonplace. |
|
Rick: Gordo,
Thanks for fielding my question.
Why has not more discussion been made of Coach Murray's commment made earlier this season regarding a "losing culture"? (much courage goes to him for touching upon a sensitive area, an indication he cares more the organization than what might meet the eye) I recall way back a media comment involving Wayne Gretzky's impending signing questionning why anyone of his stature would ever consider the Blues, it's just a convenient stop between East and West coast road trips. It seems this type of mentality has permeated but people seem to be ignoring or discounting it. Productivity of some players, once doning a Blues jersey, seems to fall off as compared to career projections (there are exceptions of course, Boyes, Lagace, etc.) Some teams just seem to be at or near the top year after year. Let's at least put it all on the table and see if what we are looking at is as bad as it looks. |
| Jeff Gordon: John Davidson's job is to create a winning atmosphere, from the top down. The Blues used to be gunslingers, assembling ever-changing rosters through trades and free agency. Now JD wants to build an organization, as the long-woeful Devils did under Lou Lamoriello. It takes time. It also takes the right sort of young players to build around. Erik Johnson is a good start. |

Chris Scruggs: Hi Gordo,
Long time Rams fan here. When I look at the Rams wide receiver list for this upcomming year I am not encouraged and I was very sorry to see Bruce go; his shoes will be hard to fill. Holt, of course is a rock, but I hear it takes the typical reciever at least 3 years to develop into a dominant starter. When I look at this roster and ask myself what prospects are there for three years from now, I am greatly concerned. I see a lot of development slots being wasted on a variety of talent that looks like one collectively large shot in the dark. Let's hope at least the Rams have figure out that somebody other than Looker can hold for the kicker. Do you think the Rams should be spending draft picks now for the receivers they will need? Anyone on your radar screen look like a great buy at wideout?
Along similar lines of thought, do you see any good QB prospects the Rams could take in the middle rounds to help backup Bulger? This also looks like a serious weakness to me. |
| Jeff Gordon: Receivers can help right away, as Holt did. The Pro Bowl may take a few years, but the Rams have that guy already in Holt. Saunders has a demanding offense, so the team needs to add veteran help in addition to young help. |
|
| Brad: It seems obvious that if Chris Long is not available at No. 2, the Rams should trade down for more choices to fill more holes. Will they? |
| Jeff Gordon: Yeah, a move down to No. 5 or No. 6 make huge sense. Vernon Gholston should be there. |
|
Steve: What is the contract status Of David Backes? Is he a favorite of management?
Thanks
Steve |
| Jeff Gordon: If he bounces back with a big 2008-09 season, look for the Blues to lock him up with a longer-term deal. |
|
Nick: Hey Gordo,
What are the chances that the Rams will pick Vernon Gholston with their #2 pick? His draft stock has been soaring and he seems like the fastest, strongest DL in the draft. I think he would be great opposite Little, if Little can get healthy. Thanks for the time. |
| Jeff Gordon: It would be tough to take him that high, unless he just blew away the coaching staff with his individual workout. |
|
| Jeff Dameron: What are the chances the Rams take Chris Long if Miami doesn't. |
| Jeff Gordon: Very, very good. |
|
Nick: Hey Gordo,
How much do you think Will Franklin did for his draft status with his performance at Mizzou's Pro Day? Would the Rams be intersted in drafting him as the speed receiver for Saunders offense. Thanks for the time. |
| Jeff Gordon: Scouts knew he could run. But his overall athleticism wowed them. Next up: A national tour of individual workouts. The Rams are intrigued. |
|
| Will Patterson: Can you give me some examlpes of players who Rasmus compares to? Thanks for your help. |
| Jeff Gordon: Tough to say. If his power develops, he could hit like Justin Morneau (one of the projections from experts charting this stuff.) But the Cards need him to be a lead-off guy with some speed and power, plus a strong defender. |
|
nick: Ok, Jackson is a stud....BUT AGAIN...is there going to be a serious attempt and priority on extending him before his contract year and before we pass on McFadden? Extending now gives us leverage and (should have) given us the possibilty for a Jake Long...probably the surest pick in the draft at the best position to predict.
Why does this team seem to have created as many holes as it has filled? Free agency seems to be deemed a success if all you do is tread water. If we can not sign our own, we will never improve.
Plus, we greet Trent Green as a savior and "have no health concerns?" Even without his concussion history, his age should be a major concern, but odds are we'll take a cap hit compared to Ferrotte and be no better off if either tackle goes down or fails to improve/recover. Instead we box ourselves in at #2 in the draft by releasing last year's dissapointing savior James Hall.
Next we'll end up with another DT and what...decide carriker was drafted for the wrong position and move him after one year?
Would any of these GM's, coaches, or scouts be so inept if they were indemnifying even the signing bonuses?
Someone's head should roll. |
Jeff Gordon:
I share your concerns about Green. Once a player has multiple concussions, what the doctors say doesn't matter. That player is a concussion waiting to happen.
I don't mind the defensive end chase, because Hall is no kid and Little is old. The Rams had to get younger there, one way or another.
I would definitely want to lock in Jackson if I'm running the Rams, since this team could pass on a LOT of great RBs in this draft. To do that and lose Jackson down the road would really hurt.
Jake Long would be a solid pick, but your starting tackles return. Draft an OT a bit later, to get somebody to groom, might make more sense. |
|
Ryan Sullivan: Gordo,
With all the lefty starters in the NL Central, especially on the Cubs and Pirates, does Juan Gone have an edge on making the team?
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Let's see if he can actually play the outfielder. Otherwise Barton and Ludwick would stick as platoon OFs. |
|
| nick: Any possibilty of the Rams being compensated with draft choices directly if Walsh shown to have video taped walk-through b4 Super Bowl and hence Belicheck further shown to be the liar that he is? |
| Jeff Gordon: Perhaps, but the evidence would have to be damning. Remember, the Jets caught the Patriots red-handed. |
|
| Tom Boeckelmann: What do you think is the main reason for the Blues inconsistent play this year? Would you attribute it to young players or a lack of a consistent lineup from game to game? Thanks for your thoughts! |
Jeff Gordon: It would be nice to fob it off on the kids, but too many veterans were unsteady this year. McKee and Rucinsky are just two examples. Toivonen failed as the backup goaltender and guys like Kariya and Jackman needed to do more.
It's on the veterans, really. And Murray has some reflecting to do as well. |
|
ken: Hi Jeff,
I like what the Ram's have done with their front office and coaching staff and by adding Brown and Bell!
Hopefully they're not done and are looking to add a WR (Drew Carter ?), LB, S, and C.
Do you have any new insight as to what is next for our beloved Rams?? |
| Jeff Gordon: So many holes, so little time -- actually, there is a LOT of time. The Rams have enough flexibility to add help at OT, WR,CB, S, LB -- pretty much everywhere. |
|
| Kevin Weber: Is there any chance izturis could be somehow moved to AAA or released if we feel like he is not needed at some point in the year. Especially so we can free up a roster spot |
Jeff Gordon: Last question of the day -- sorry about the choppiness, but I had a little technical woe.
I figure Izturis will get a good run at this job, given the financial commitment. At worst he should be a solid defensive replacement. I want to see Ryan on the team because I like his energy, but I also see the need for more power and the need to keep Miles busy . . . if Kennedy hits at second.
It's so fluid right now. The competition is fierce. Tony would just like to see that reflected more clearly in the infield play.
Thanks -- see you next week! |
