erich_stlmo@yahoo.com: Hey Gordo I was wondering about your thoughts as far as Andre Smith. I'm reasing that his stock has went so far down that he might be a 2nd day pick up. Now if I was the Rams I would consider maybe drafting him if he's available in the lower rounds. What do they have too lose drafting him that low plus they need depth at the offensive line. I'm not too sole on Barron at left tackle...and if they do draft a tackle at the 2nd pick I figure that's who they are going too put at right tackle so why not pick up smith and if Barron fells put Smith at the spot and see what he can do. What's your feelings on that?
Jeff Gordon: Smith has slipped, but he hasn't slipped THAT much. I would expect the offensive tackle depth to make a good prospect available late in the first round (giving the Rams a chance to trade up from the second) or even at the St. Louis pick in the second round.
Nobody is that exciting about Alex Barron playing left tackle. Look for the Rams to create competition at both tackle spots during this off-season.
SoulknightSTL: Just like any winning organization, any team that returns to the identity that made them successful, usually start winning games or even Superbowls. Steelers,Giants and Bears are known for their defensive prowess and the Colts, and Rams were offensive juggernauts. ALL won alot games and Superbowls when they beame what they are historically known for. I feel the Rams need to return their "identity" that made them successful. Do you feel this is coincidental or has some merit to it.
Jeff Gordon: It's a reasonable theory, but that team is gone. Many things came together at the same time at once -- Warner's emergence, the arrival of Faulk, Holt and Timmerman, Martz's cutting edge offense, the fast track at The Ed -- to make that happen. Trying to replicate that would be impossible.
bob_n_weave: Jeff,
Where are they now ?
Claude Terell
Lawrence Phillips
Drew Bennett
Jeff Gordon: Claude Terrell: Home.
Lawrence Phillips: Jail.
Drew Bennett: Home
drelboc: Hey Gordo;
Is the fruit beginning to ripen down there in the Grapefruit league? Fruit as in Colby Rasmus? Now that you have had some time to check him out, whats your observations of the kid at this point in the Spring?
Thank you Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: He is physically stronger, which is a plus. He really looks like a player. Great defense, good wheels and gap power. It's possible he won't start the season with the team -- especially if Schumaker can't play second base -- but he will make an impact in St. Louis this season.
HiltonHeadMatt: The Peterson trade to Detroit opens up a number of situations. The Lions could now switch positions with Cleveland in which Detroit then gets Anderson and the Browns select Curry #1. Or, the Lions take either an OT or Stafford with their #1 and the Rams could then swap positions with the Browns and get Anderson and take either an OT or another LB. Or, Seattle flipping with the Rams ahead of Kansas City to take Curry and the Rams get the 4th choice (and still a very good OT or LB)and Seattle's 2nd round choice. What are your thoughts and can you think of any other possibilities? Thanks for the interesting discussions.
HiltonHeadMatt
Jeff Gordon: At first blush, the Peterson deal seemed to make Curry more likely for the Rams. Would the Lions really pour big dollars into a second high-end defensive player?
I don't see the Rams making the extra effort to get Anderson, but you never know. I still like Curry for the Rams. And if that doesn't work, then Crabtree is a possibility. I wouldn't take an OT second overall and trading down in the first round will be difficult.
marvin slay: Mr. Gordon
Now that the Rams have a fullback Mike Karney, I am betting that Spags expects Stephen Jackson to have an outstanding year next year.
My read is that if he doesn't do exceptionally well (however you want to define that) that Stephen will be gone the following year even if he gets injured (heaven forbid). In other words there are no more excuses...and another injury may mean he is accident prone...
Whats your take?
Marvin Slay
San Diego
Jeff Gordon: Next year is a huge season for Steven Jackson, yes. But I don't see the Rams blowing him out two years into that contract. Jackson is a rare talent, a game changer.
Mike: Alburt hasnt hit a homerun yet in spring. Is this usally how he starts off?
Jeff Gordon: Albert is fine.
Aloha Cards Fan: Tyler Johnson:
Good morning Mr. Gordon,
Young lefty reliever that experienced early success; overcoming surgery;contract not extended. Where is he? Have we no interest in him? If so,why?
Give us some juice, baby.
Thank you!
Jeff Gordon: Coming back from injury, he signed a minor league deal with the Mariners. The Cards must have been convinced he was toast -- since several of the lefties they signed this offseason offer none of Tyler's upside.
BillP: Hey Jeff, does the NHL have on it's agenda to review the topic of playoff format? I mean the current setup pretty much renders the current divisional alignments useless. I mean what's the point of divisions and divisional games when they basically mean nothing. Either go with what you had in the old days, top 4 teams in each division and have divisional playoffs or scratch the divisions and just have a Conference standings and have everyone play each other the same number of times. I mean personally I like the old divisional set up but the fair thing to do would be to scratch the divisions and go with the Conference standings, so that's probably what I would decide. What's your take and is the NHL looking at this? Thanks and Have a good week !
Jeff Gordon: I like the conference playoff format in a 30-team league, since it assures that the best teams will make the playoffs. And I still like the division-weighted schedule, especially since the NHL went back to having Western Conference teams playing all the Eastern Conference teams once a season.
The division-weighted schedule creates easier travel and it does create the possibility for rivalries.
But here is what I would do: Take 10 teams from each side of the league in the playoffs and have a four-team play-in on both sides of the league.
In the old days, the NHL allowed 16 of 21 teams. Now 14 teams miss. As the NHL fights to keep its fan base, postseason expansion would help.
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
Should there be any amount of concern at this point in spring training that each of the Cards' top three sluggers - Albert Pujols, Ryan Ludwick, and Rick Ankiel - is without a home run and that they have just 17 RBI collectively in 16 games through Sunday? If that's not a concern to you, what would be from your standpoint?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick's struggle is a minor concern. If he doesn't loosen up and start stroking some shots, he could be uptight coming into the season.
Jason: Jeff, what was the deal last night with the USA pitcher throwing behind the Netherlands player after the guy before admired his homerun? Dunn just did the same thing, or at least similar, an inning or so before. The only difference in my eyes was the hop the Netherlands player did. Give the guy his 15 seconds and move on. I thought it was ridiculous how the commentators never even thought to compare the two and just picked on the guy. You would think MLB pitchers would be used to it by now with all the posing the hitters do after launching one (or at lease thinking they did, i.e. the Cubs' Soriano). I wish they all were more like Rolen (well, when he was hitting them). Your thoughts.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the whole home-run admiration thing is ridiculous. Rolen was old school, which was admirable. But if pitchers don't like the homer pose, then they shouldn't allow the long balls. Period.
Rey: If the rams draft a OT in the first, is there any chance that Laurinitis slips to to the rams in the second? He could be the answer at mlb. Wasnt he rated in the top 10 last year? What happened?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, he could fall. Let ESPN's Mel Kiper explain:
"Guessing where Laurinaitis will come off the board is tough. I like the way he plays the game, but he needs to be protected by quality defensive tackles and didn't perform this past season at the level of his junior campaign. Back in August, I thought there was no way Laurinaitis would be picked later than the middle of the first round. Now, though, he could drop all the way into Round 2."
ram4life: Gordo, how could this organization be looking in any direction but Curry's come draft time? We never address the linebacker position and Curry gives us three players in one. DE, OLB, MLB. I know most want CRabtree, and i think he will be good, but, we were blown out by the first quarter in most games last year, i think it should be defense, defense, defense with the first pick. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: I've come to agree. Earlier, I was all about the OTs. Then the mixed reports rolled in. I'm not sure any of those guys are worth the top dollars that the second pick commands. Curry appears to be a no-brainer -- if he is there at No. 2.
dixie2003: Hello Gordo,
Do you see Rasmus making the team if the Schumaker experiment doesn't work out? You got Duncan looking like he might be comeback player of the year and Rasmus not really standing out in my mind. Don't you think Rasmus will have to start looking alot better to make the team?
Jeff Gordon: Colby needs a big finish, yes, because there are many options in the OF. Rasmus hans't killed the ball this spring and he hasn't consistently killed the ball at the Class AAA level. Duncan will be difficult to keep for the long haul because Jon Jay is also pushing for a big league job, in addition to all those other guys.
dixie2003: Hey Gordo,
Do you think Oquendo is gonna give Yadi enough playing time? Getting 4 AB's isn't exactly getting your swings in. Has he even caught a game for PR? I got a laugh reading about Yadi offering to pinch run, not exactly the fleetest of foot. He must be desperate to contribute. Hope he gets the chance.
Jeff Gordon: I'd rather Molina not play a whole lot. It's a long year. Let Ivan use the WBC to campaign for work. Yadier still get some ABs in before the end of spring.
Rich: Good morning Gordo,
I have a couple of Rams questions.
1. Now that the Rams have a ton of cap space after releasing Pace and Holt, are there are any worthwhile targets in free agency for all that cash?
I realize the Rams were trying to get something for either one of them in trade; however, having all that cap space would have been a lot more useful at the start of free agency versus week three.
2. Any word on a long term deal for OJ?
Thanks again for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams will try to get the Atogwe deal done, since it makes sense for both sides.
Here is the deal with free agency: The Rams need many, many players. Look for the money to be allocated on a whole stack of guys.
Paul: My question is with all the outfield prospects in the minors and up in the majors, why not the Cardinals trade one off for a 2nd baseman. We do have 6 quility outfielders in Ludwick, Ankiel, Schumaker, Mather, Duncan and Stahovia. Plus we have up and comers in John Jay and a few others, we are loaded in that position so why not trade outfielders to get what we need? My other question is if you think that we will have Khalil Greene at shortstop and Tyler Greene at 2nd base? Can we have a Greene infield? Or are they trying to place a 3rd baseman that they are also loaded with at 2nd base to make sure everyone they want in the majors are up?
Jeff Gordon: An OF/2B is always a possibility. La Russa wanted to give Skip a full run at the job because he could fill the leadoff role and allow the Cards to start a power-packed lineup.
TLR would have a lot of fun with this product, double-switching a second baseman into every game. Skip would either come out or move to the OF.
Tyler Greene is making a move, but I believe his best spot would be everyday SS at Memphis. A full year at the Class AAA level would do him good.
I see Thurston making the team, given his ability to play everywhere. Ryan also makes the team if his wrist holds up. He can play three infield spots and he would add speed.
Zac, TN: Gordo,
With the spring schedule coming to an end and the season opener is appearing around the corner, we have got to come to our senses that Skip needs to be an outfielder. He would be a great bench player receiving the opportunity to play a game in each series. I do not think we need to trade him because he is has a very important role on this team. He is getting outplayed at second and the staff knows that. Tyler Greene was drafted by the Cardinals and he has patiently waited for his opportunity and I think the staff needs to give him a chance at second along with Brian Barden or Joe Thurnston. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Greene finally came around at the end of last season and he has continued that run. He is back on track to the majors. His time will come. Barden is a solid Class AAAA guy, a versatile fill-in. Thurston I like a lot.
If Skip can't play second, I'd go with a Ryan/Thurston platoon and mix Skip when the Cards double-switch some offense into the game while playing catch-up.
Tiger J: Good Day Jeff, just a few questions. Any word if Jason Brown's contract is correct? Don't mind Jason Smith if available but Monroe instead of Curry what do you think? Lastly probably have answered this but who in house is front runner if Skip doesn't workout? Thanks for your time
Jeff Gordon: Monroe is polished, but I'm not sure he is a No. 2 pick. Smith has a huge upside, but, again, he may not be a No. 2 pick.
Griff21: Is it time to start Bishop yet? Mason's save percentage has plummeted these last few games and hes starting to show some wear, looks a tad slower.
Jeff Gordon: Mason has looked a bit punchy lately, but, no, Bishop isn't the answer. He or Holt will fill in when games get out of hand, but otherwise it's Chris' race to run.
paceram: Two questions: 1) Who (Aaron Curry, Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe, Michael Crabtree) do you think the Rams will choose with their top pick and 2) I am hoping they select Curry but if they choose either Smith or Monroe can you tell me how you rate these players to Jake Long (are they as good or at least nearly as good as Long?)?
Thanks for your time!
Jeff Gordon: I don't think there is a Jake Long in this draft, based on what the experts are saying. So don't assume the Rams will take an OT just because Pace left. The team has holes just as big at WR and LB.
Griff21: Little disappointed in the new free food format, why did they have to change that?
Jeff Gordon: Economics. It's tough all over . . .
John W: Jeff,
Any chance we see OF John Jay in the majors at the start of the season? Its a crowded outfield, but its hard to ignore a guy hitting close to .400.
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: He IS a terrific prospect, one that makes the crowd much bigger. He is a better prospect than either Barton or Stavinoha. He can run, he can go get a fly ball and he has gap power. He can't throw like Ankiel, Rasmus, Schumaker or Ludwick, but could be a solid big league OF.
First, though, deals must me made.
Glenn: Blues question. Perron-Oshie - Berglund are going fine. The key seems to be more production from Boyes-Walt and McDonald? I believe giving Mason a game or two off is important. Bishop should play against Vancouver or Calgary I hpoe? The defense has been a little inconsistent. Perhaps playing them more evenly as far as ice time may help since we do not have a true #1 pair right now
Jeff Gordon: It'll be tough to start Bishop with each game meaning to much. Either he or Holt will sub in (as Bishop did Saturday) when Mason is having a tough night. That keeps Chris from getting mentally beat up.
It's tough to spread the defensive minutes because some of these guys are just getting by. That forces Murray to lean too hard on players like Jackman, who isn't really a top two defenseman.
I liked McDonald over the weekend, but Boyes and Tkachuk need to do more at even strength. That has been an issue all season.
Glenn: The Cardinals young pitching is starting to show some real promise. Motte and Perez are nice power arms in the pen. Boggs/McClellan/Todd/Ottavino/Walters and Mortenson is the best group of young starters at AAA/AA the Cards have had in a long time.
I say keep Perez and Motte on the team and let Thompson or Walters battle it out for the 12th pitchers spot. I like grooming McClellan as a starter at AAA?
Jeff Gordon: Interesting thought. I see McClellan staying because he proved himself under pressure last year. Thompson is handy for the long role, so that doesn't leave much room for newcomers. If Perez doesn't locate his command, he could be the odd guy out. The Motte/Franklin/Kinney/McClellan mob could close games, Reyes and Miller could do the lefty work and Thompson could go long.
Glenn: Missouri should be favored to get the the sweet 16 although the possible matchup with Marquette is no easy task. Possible matchup with Memphis will be tough. Will Missouri wear down Memphis? What do you see as the keys to that possible matchup?
Jeff Gordon: Missouri/Memphis would be fun. Memphis would want to run with the Tigers -- and I don't know if they can match Mizzou's 11-man depth.
You know the Tigers will defend. You know they will make extra passes and take pretty good care of the ball. You know they can be deliberate when they have to and execute their half-court offense.
But . . . if they come out shooting rocks, as they have done too often this season, then storming back will be tough once they get past the first round. If the Tigers can knock down their first half shots and keep the game even (or better), they will be a nightmare to face in the second half.
Glenn: Rams have clearly made decision to turn the page. I agree with cutting Holt but Pace surprises me. Now we seem to almost be locked into drafting a tackle with our #1 pick and the best player on the board may be Curry or Crabtree. How do you see this? Any free agent tackles available so we can take an OT in round 2?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have a lot of holes. OT, WR and LB are equally big needs. The Rams could take a tackle, yes, but it would be very hard to pass on Curry if he is there at No. 2. Curry could become a 10-year defensive cornerstone.
dixie2003: Hi Gordo,
It seems like a lot of our inf/of prospects are swinging a good bat. Who do you realistically see making the team? Are there any infield prospects that are playing good offense and defense? I enjoy your chats.
Jeff Gordon: Ryan was limited for a long time because of his sore wrist, but I think he'll beat out Tyler Greene. Hoffpauir is making a case at second base, but I would expect Thurston to make the team as a utility guy. If Skip can't play second, then an extra infielder will make the group. Maybe Barden could stick as an extra guy. But they have all shown pretty well.
Kevin: Jeff,
Please tell us the Cards are going to add a real 2nd baseman before the end of Spring Training. A trade?
Any chance the Cards choose to go with 3 lefties in the bullpen?
Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: Three lefties? Very little chance of that. As it is, there is a tough battle for the 12th spot.
A 2B trade is always possible, but predicting the timetable of that is difficult. Will another team be looking to move a guy at the end of the spring? If not, the Cards have enough to stay in-house if Skip can't cut it.
Cardinals9: Hi Gordo,
Thanks for all your hard work and insights. It is appreciated.
My questions are on the World Baseball Classic. I know it has garnered a rather unpopular reputation among many in the U.S. However, if it was moved to the fall after the MLB baseball season and World Series was over, it would no longer interfere with Spring Training and more of the elite players might feel inclined to play (with exceptions, such as the insurance problems in Pujols' case). This is my biggest gripe that many marquee players sit it out and think that more fans would watch if those players participated.
I also think that the event is largely popular outside the U.S. and does very well to allow players to represent their countries and spread baseball's popularity on an international scale. The Olympics will no longer have baseball as an event from what I understand (along with softball).
So, given all of this, why do they not hold it in the Fall? I don't envision it any more problematic than having it in the Spring Am I missing something? Although some players may be worn down, if their team didn't make the playoffs they'd have a month's rest (or quasi-break) anyhow.
Is Selig the brainiac behind this one? And, if it was switched to where the WBC was in the fall, would you be on board for that?
Jeff Gordon: I agree. Hold it in the fall. You won't get World Series players, but you might get more good players than you get now. And MLB teams would have fewer reservations about letting players play.
Jayman: Hows it! Gordo which rounds in the NFL draft produce the impact players 1-2, 1-3, 1-4. Another question..what is it about Colby Rasmus that impresses people, Ive been hard press to find anything...
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus has speed, power and excellent throwing arm to go with solid outfield instincts. Like any kid drafted out of high school, he needs to adjust to each level of professional ball. He didn't stay healthy last year, which set him back. He might or might not need a little more time at the Class AA level. But he developed much fasted than either Chris Duncan or Joe Mather did.
You can find impact players anywhere in the draft. Or after it. Fletcher was an impact LB and he didn't get drafted. Butler has become an impact safety and he didn't get drafted either.
ballhawk32: Hey Jeff:
Would you agree that the Rams now actually have a bigger glaring need at WR then any other position? I think this now makes Crabtree the favorite again at No. 2????
I guess I'm just slightly suprised that the Rams released both Pace and Holt, thus creating two huge needs. I guess they were trying to trade them first, because the cap relief at this point is practically useless. And why even announce the Barron/Bell tackle plan at this point in time, if we're planning on taking at OT at No. 2?
Jeff Gordon: Again, no guarantee of an OT at No. 2. Again, there are holes at OT, LB and WR. So the Rams really do have the luxury of picking the guy they think will most live up to the big money that high picks get.
Look for the Rams to add an quantity of free agents. Other teams will be letting guys go or making deals still. The ability to take on money will really speed the rebuilding process.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Three weeks to opening day. Where do you think we stand at 2B? If Skip can't cut it, and we insert Ryan or Thurston, who is our leadoff man?
It seems Rasmus would be the only alternative, and since Tony doesn't seem to want to "give" anything to a youngster, I can barely see Colby in CF much less leading off in front of Ludwick, Pujols and Ankiel.
Jeff Gordon: Your assessment is right on. Long term, Rasmus would be the guy there IF Skip can't handle the D at second base. In the meantime, it could get interesting in the leadoff spot if Skip can't handle the new position. TLR could start Skip in the outfield, but keeping Rasmus out of the lineup for more than a few weeks will be tough.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Who are the next 2-3 guys you see signing an extension with the Cards and what type of money do you think they will get? (Wellemeyer, Ludwick, Ankiel, Pujols, Glaus, K. Greene, Franklin)
Jeff Gordon: K. Greene is an interesting case. If excels in this environment, he would be worth $30 million over four years, even in the new economy. Ankiel would be worth more. Wellemeyer might take a three-year deal, for less than Lohse's annual rate. Albert is is another universe, one the Cards don't have to visit until 2011.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Is Joe Mather really EARNING the 3B spot? A .250 OBP and .238 BAA doesn't show me that he is grabbing the bull by the horns. I understand the guy has power, but those are the kind of numbers I would expect to compete for a utility role on the bench, not the starting 3B job.
Jeff Gordon: He is earning it for a few weeks, then he reverts to the utility role. Meanwhile, Freese can play every day at Memphis and try to prove he can replace Glaus next year.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
I know the competition isn't fierce, but I think it should be noted that in 10 innings, Piniero has not given up an earned run and has compiled 9 K's versus 1 walk. Have you seen him pitch yet? Is there reason to believe he can actually carry this over into the season?
Jeff Gordon: I saw him throw and he did look sharp. He appears ready to make the most of the "walk" year of his contract. If he reverts to his '08 form, he will head into 2010 looking for a minor league deal and a spring invite. His stakes are very high. After washing out in Seattle and Boston, he can't afford to wash out here.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Hawksworth or Thompson? Blake is outperforming Brad and he is still getting good innings in major league camp as of March 16.
Jeff Gordon: But . . . the Cards aren't going discard Thompson unless there is a decent trade out there for him. Hawksworth could return to Memphis, put up numbers and stay in line. He, Ottavino, Todd and Mortensen need to get ready for recalls at some point this season. Injuries will hit. They always do.
Jerry from Memphis: How do you feel things are working out for Schu at 2nd base? He had a poor games recently but since then has turned a couple of double plays and seems to be handling more chances successfully. Do you still see him as our starting 2nd baseman?
Also, how is Perez? ankle? Do you see him beginning the year in the St.Louis bullpen? How about Mott? Is he ready?
Jeff Gordon: That Perez has had to pitch with discomfort is alarming to me. He will need a strong spring finish to make the team. Motte has looked better.
I still think Schumaker will get a real shot at 2B this year because TLR loves his bat. TLR doesn't surrender easily.
slapperloon: Hello Jeff,
Not to focus too much on the negative, but I was wondering if you think the Blues might have any luck buying out Jay McKee's contract in the offseason. I like the effort and experience McKee brings to our team, but in my opinion, he simply doesn't have the mobility to play a regular shift at the NHL level anymore. Your thoughts?
slapperloon
Jeff Gordon: It may get to that point IF everybody comes back healthy next year and IF Pietrangelo is ready to play. McKee is putting himself in harm's way every night and trying to play physical, so he IS making every effort to earn his money. But mobility is an issue, yes.
Ed C: Gordo,
Nice article on Mizzou's seeding, I agree. However, I can't agree with Bernie that they got a good draw with Memphis and U Conn. - that could be the toughest region.
Shifting gears, do you agree with the following scenario; 1) the Rams would love to trade out of #2 but likely won't be able to 2) at #2 they need a game changer 3) unless you can get an Orlando Pace, Joe Thomas or Jake Long I wouldn't take an OL that high and pay a guy that maybe plays RT that kind of money. And the Rams may not grade Smith or Monroe that high (on one of the chats it was mentioned that the Rams weren't at Smith's pro day, not sure what that means) 5) that leaves Curry, Crabtree, Orakpo or Raji as potential game changers. You favor Curry in that situation, correct? 6) say the Lions take Curry then who?
Jeff Gordon: Agree with you wholeheartedly. There are first-round OTs, but not second overall OTs -- according to many experts. So I'd go Curry or Crabtree and then look to get an OT later.
owen: I HAVE READ WHERE JASON SMITH DOES NOT HAVE LONG ARMS WHICH IS A MUST AT TACKLE AND HE IS A ONE YEAR WONDER WITH A LOT OF UP SIDE.EUGENE MONROE HAS EXPERIENCE AND IS THE SAFEST PICK OF THE TWO BUT MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HIS KNEE AND DOES NOT HAVE KILLER INSTINCT.I SAY DRAFT CURRY AND TAKE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE IN SECOND.HOPEFULLY BEATTY OUT OF U CONN.IF HE IS NOT THERE I SAY TAKE BRACE DT OR DONALD BROWN RB.HE WOULD BE A CHANGE OF PACE BACK AND IF WE ARE GOING TO RUN AS MUCH AS I THINK STEVEN JACKSON IS GOING TO NEED A CAPABLE BACK UP.I THINK WE SHOULD PICK UP A VET OT.BARNES IS STILL OUT THERE AND WE MIGHT CAN GET HIM CHEAP AND SIGN HIM BASED ON INCENTIVES.WE ONLY HAVE ONE TACKLE ON THE ROSTER NOW WE GOT TO GET ONE OR TWO FREE AGENTS AT THIS POSITION BEFORE WE GO INTO THE DRAFT.IF NOT,WE WILL DEFINITELY TAKE ONE WITH OUR FIRST PICK.
Jeff Gordon: THE RAMS WILL ADDRESS TACKLE BEFORE, DURING AND PROBABLY AFTER THE DRAFT. BUT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THEY WILL TAKE SECOND OVERALL.
donkellybb: What second base free agents are a possible deal for the Cards? Is Adam O. a potential player for the big club this year?
Jeff Gordon: There is nothing fresh left on the free-agent marketplace at second base. The club will go to internal candidates or make a trade if Skip can't finish up strong in the field this spring.
Ottavino is one of many pitchers who could position themselves for recall by throwing well in the minors this year. For first time in a long, long time, this team has real prospect depth. Mitchell Boggs is in that mix as well, since he has bounced back from some earlier shoulder stiffness.
Dave From Ohio: Gordo,
As always, thanks for these chats. My question is are the Rams prepared to go into the season with Avery, Burton and a rookie as there top three receivers? Also do you think the Rams are done in free agency, or do you see them picking up a couple more before then?
As off right now, what is the teams biggest need in your opinion?
Thanks again
Dave
Jeff Gordon: I see them adding at least one veteran receiver. Teams need a big number at that position going into camp.
By no means are the Rams done in free agency. They may not make another splashy move, but I definitely see them adding additional players.
The Pastor: It would seem that halfway through Spring Training, the Cardinals still have two primary questions (the same questions that they had at the start of Spring Training): Second base and closer.
For second base...In your opinion, is Schumaker a good option--and if not, what is the realistic answer (realistic meaning what the organization is truly willing to do).
For closer...In your opinion, do we really have a good option, period? All I can see at this point is potential and untested considerations. Once again, what is the realistic answer to this quandry?
Thanks for your time.
Jeff Gordon: I like Motte in the closer role, but he'll have to earn the opportunity under fire. That is why Franklin will get some early closing assignments. Kinney seems slotted into the Springer role, but if he keeps throwing well, he could close games. Perez has the most to prove right now, due to his struggles with command.
David: Gordo, I know Billy Devaney is keeping his cards close in terms of their approach to filling the void at WR - Do you see anyone who is still on the market that may fit what they're looking for? Under 30, affordable, some experience... thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Most of the good remaining free agents are really older, like Holt. That doesn't make much sense for this team. A guy like D.J Hackett would make more sense. Devery Henderson would have been a nice fit.
Joe Stafford: Jeff,
Forget the cap ramifcations, would you do a Bulger for Cutler trade?
Jeff Gordon: Sure. Jay still has a future and Marc is pretty beat up.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, now with Holt released, who can replace him as our #1? A second round pick, Donnie Avery, or a Free agent?
Jeff Gordon: I could live with a Burton/Avery tandem to start. There isn't a whole lot left in free agency besides depth. So the draft becomes important.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, if it was possible, would you trade for Boldin from the Cardinals to be our 1?
Jeff Gordon: I probably would, but the Rams front office sees a LOT of holes. Arizona should demand multiple assets for him -- and that is where it gets tough. Getting Anquan the money is not the hard part.
James: Gordo,
Should we be getting excited with the starters that will be in Memphis this year? Ottavino, Hawksworth, Boggs, Mortensen, and Todd seem to have done a pretty good job in spring training so far. Are we finally producing our own starting pitching or will they die on the vine waiting, while we scour the cast off barrel for a former 10 game winner who might get it to 80mph with a good tail wind. What say ye?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the Cards have had some real suspects at Memphis over the years. Finally it appears there may be some real alternatives. Add Walters to that list -- and Garcia will be back next year.
Curt: Gordo,
Where is Brian Leonard in all this? Is he the #2? Are the Rams still looking at taking a complimentary "big back" as was the plan before Spags was hired?
And why on earth would they not be re-signing Goldberg, especially after Pace's release?
Jeff Gordon: I agree on Goldberg. I'd overpay him after the solid job he did last year. And, yes, the Rams need a better No. 2 back, given the ground emphasis.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, I like the Karney pickup, I just hope that Jackson can stay healthy, with no 1 reciever, looks like the Rams will be 3 yards and a cloud of dust team this year.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams will need a stronger second back to run this offense. At WR, I believe either Burton or Avery could put up the numbers Torry did last year. Both have huge upside.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, who is left on free agency as a big fat run stuffing d-tackle the Rams can sign for a 1 and 2nd down player?
Jeff Gordon: There's Tank Johnson, but I don't see the Rams going there. Mostly back-ups after that. This would be a good time for Clifton Ryan to excel.
Ed Johnson: Dear Jeff
I have two questions first is there are two players that could fill a depth and starting need for the Rams Napolean Harris (6'3"/255) MLB and Kendrik Allen DT (6'5"/325) both are free agents (not restricted), have the Rams considered both or either one?
Second question, Is Jim Thomas on vacation? Is he alright? I know we had some fans that were very harsh with Jim. Jim deserves better than that from True Rams Fans!
Jeff Gordon: Allen is big, but the scouts aren't in love. Don't know that he could start here ahead of what is in place.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, would you be in favor of drafting a mlb with the second round pick to improve our defense and try to get by with whatever recievers we can get later and maybe improve the recievers next year?
Jeff Gordon: They will have to improve the position this year. So much work to do . . .
SCOTT RHEIN: Hello Jeff and Thank You for taking my question. I would just like to say that I love the way the Blues are playing. The fact that we have a chance at the playoffs and not looking forward to the draft. It is awesome. I also love the fact that we took 3 of 4 games this week. My question is about Patrik Berglund. How is he doing in the rookie race? I know he is getting a lot of chances with the kids line. They are on fire.
Thank You
Scott
Jeff Gordon: I don't think he has scored enough to take that prize. But he might be the best overall rookie forward over the long haul.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, what do you think of the Jay Cutler situtation? Did the Broncos screw up with that Conference call, or is Cutler just a spoiled brat?
Jeff Gordon: Spoiled brat! Maybe Mel Kiper was right about this guy.
Emerson on 94: If the Blues do make the playoffs, what are the chances that Erik Johnson and Paul Kariya are available to play? EJ said before that if they make the playoffs then he would like to play, but then management said that the plan was to hold him out until the start of next season. Kariya's yahoo sports player profile has a note on it now saying that he has resumed skating and plans to be ready to play in the playoffs, if the Blues make it. Do you think that either or both realistically would play?
Jeff Gordon: Kariya could play. Johnson could not. The Blues will take no chances with the cornerstone player.
Jeff Storey: Jim.
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us.
1. While I agree the Rams are thin on the OL, I would rather see the Rams build up the defense early in the draft. What do you think of taking Curry with the #2 pick, taking either Ron Brace or Ziggy Hood in the second round, draft a ORT in the third round (I like Fenuki Topou at RT) and look at either Patrick Turner or Louis Murphy in the fourth round? This would address the defense, and give the Rams an identity of a running team on offense. We cannot fix all of this teams problems in one year so start with basics of building the lines and get stronger.
2. What do the Rams think of Joel Filini, Quentin Culberson, David Vobora and Roy Schuening? Do these guys have any potential to contribute to this team next year?
Jeff Gordon: I was a Culberson guy until next season, when he really failed to get it done. Schuening . . . we didn't see much of, although Loney is back and he liked him well enough. David V. is a nice special teams guy, but not good enough to help at LB, I think.
As we've discussed, the Rams could take Curry first and fill other needs later.
Matt: Hi Gordo-
I'm from Kansas City and I made the weekend trip to Oklahoma City. Even though they might not have beat the best to get it done, Big XII Champions can only help recruting and getting a new deal for MA. Two part question. Does Alden give MA new deal before the end of the year and far can the Tigers go in the Tourney?
Jeff Gordon: Missouri can get to the Sweet 16. As for Anderson, people in the know believe it is 50-50. Maybe Alabama will hire Hamilton and help the Tigers out.
Wild Bill: Hey Gordo,
Thanks for the chat.
From what I can tell Lil'Dunc seems to be fully recovered and ready to contribute, while Ank and Ludwick are showing more disapline at the plate so do you think Rasmus would be better off starting the season in Memphis until needed on an everyday basis.
Also now that Manny knows where he stands with the organization why not let him come back after the Rivermen are done and let him be the backup? Big Ben looks alot like Brent Johnson did when he was rushed into service too soon (NOT READY).
Jeff Gordon: Ben is just an emergency guy. If Mason really wears down, the Blues might have to suck it up with Manny. Otherwise, the team has done better in his absence.
If Rasmus hits the last few weeks of spring, he should be here. He is talented. Make room for him. If he struggles, then there are many options.
Jason O.: Gordo -
How do you see (who is on) the cardinals 25 man on April 6th?
Jeff Gordon: Molina, LaRue
Pujols, Schumaker, K. Greene, Mather, Ryan, Thurston
Ankiel, Rasmus, Ludwick, Duncan, Barton
Carpenter, Wainwright, Lohse, Wellemeyer, Pineiro
Reyes, Miller
Thompson
Motte, Franklin, Kinney, McClellan
redneckburd72: Éirinn go brách Gordo,
I have my green hat ready to go and was just wonderin' if Mr. Freese is feelin' a little better and if he will be showin' up with some corned beef n' cabbage and a pitcher o' green brew or if he be needin' some lass to aid in his recovery. Also what's the skin n' bones on Donovan Solano..I haven't heard of him before, what level o' ball did he impress the lassies last year? I thank ya for your time....as it is.
Happy St. Patty's Day
Jeff Gordon: Solano, 15 pounds. Yikes! But he has hit enough to progress. Let's see what a whole year at the Double A level does for him.
Poor Freese. He doomed himself to start a Memphis with his off-field injury.
Chris: In 2009, the Blues have been one of the top teams in the league, with Mason stepping up in a big way, and the kids really coming into their own. I love the Perron, Berglund, Oshie line. Will Murray keep them together and let their chemistry develop? Also, will the Blues be able to keep it up and make the playoffs? It seems Mason may be getting a little worn down...
Jeff Gordon: Murray will use them together a lot, but there is no such thing as a set line in the NHL any more. Very, very few of them.
1nOnlyMrTroupe: Hey Jeff,
thanks in advance for taking the time to do this. My question is in regards to the STL Rams.
1)With the draft and 2nd round of free agency quickly approaching is there anymore information out there on the potential prospects that the rams are having interest in bringing in for a work out or face to face meeting to get more insight before the draft?
2)as far as free agency do you see any potential Spags and Billy D type player(s) that they might have interest in bringing in for depth?
3)What are the overall views with the current situation with the lack of depth/talent at OL,QB,WR,LB,CB.
-Thanks again
Jeff Gordon: Look for many top prospects to make their Rams Park visit. The team needs to leave its options open right to the draft, in case a deal comes their way.
So many needs . . . the Rams will work right up through training camp to fill all those holes.
Mark in NY: Gordo, 1) if Terrell Ownes can get 6 mil from the Bills, why hasn't Torry Holt signed a big contract yet? 2) Why would Spags cut Orlando Pace, when he is the type of tackle we would seek in free agency. Did his skills deteriorate that much, or was his asking price simply too high (is this why he hasn't signed with anyone either)? And 3) Where the heck is Jim Thomas? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Both guys are used to getting top dollar. And I would assume both want to win. So now they can be selective. They won't rush off to Buffalo, as T.O. did.
JeffInColorado: Gordo,
I was curious how you feel about the NHL giving out 2 points, but *sometimes* 3 points a game. I have done the math and really the only changes in the standings (if 1 point was not given for an OT loss) is that Vancouver is out and Nahsville would be in. At this current point in time.
Jeff Gordon: The three-point thing makes it hard to play catch-up. Teams have to finish way over .500 in a season like this in the Western Conference. And that is a shame.
Gabriel 2 Snow: Hi Gordo, is there any news on the Goldberg front? His versatility has become even more desired due to Paces release. At least he didn't sign quickly in Cleveland. Do Rams even have an offer on the table?
Jeff Gordon: I'm a big Goldberg fan. As I said earlier, I'd overpay to keep him.
JerrythePro: Hey Gordo-
I know Spags is sensitive to the whole issue surrounding a player's willingness to work hard, be the best team mate and carry of good code of conduct. That said, the Rams can get recently released Matt Jones on the cheap. What say you?
Jeff Gordon: Nice talent, big problems. Wouldn't go there.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
I've liked the moves that have been happening this off season but when will, or will we, hear about free agent DT's coming to visit?
One in particular piques my interest, Dewayne Robertson. Granted he bombed out as a NT in Denver's 34 alignment but he put up somre real good numbers his first 4 or 5 years in the league with the Jets when they ran a 43 defense.
Jeff Gordon: Here is what ESPN.com says:
"After five seasons with the New York Jets, where he was on the verge of being declared a first-round bust, Robertson signed with the Broncos prior to the 2008 season. He started 15 games for the Broncos but never really lived up to expectations. He was not a good fit in Denver and is not quite as big and powerful as you want your nose tackle to be. He also lacks the explosiveness and acceleration to come off the edge as a defensive end. He has struggled with a consistency and competitiveness, but to his credit he has been willing to play with minor injuries over his career. He is not a great knee bender and tends to loose leverage on blocks as he starts to bend at the waist. He will probably find a better fit with a team that runs a 4-3 defense and if he is willing to take a pay cut that allows him to be a backup."
cards89: Thanks for fielding some questions Gordo.
What will happen to Brad Thompson if he didn't make the team when camp breaks? Minors/release/trade? It just seems that McClellan is going to be more likely to take on that long relief role at a minimum.... or would they even dream of putting Motte, Perez, or Kinney in the minors because of the number crunch?
Thanks again!
Jeff Gordon: There is room for Thompson, with Boggs, Todd, Ottavino, et all at Memphis. Perez could be the odd man out if he isn't sharper the last few weeks.
Kyle has late-inning value.
RXBluejay25: Thoughts on the following:
1. 1st- Curry 2nd- Loadholt 3rd-Macho Harris 4th- Javon Ringer 5th- Rhett Bomar
2. Should Creighton be in over Arizona?
3. Blues....In or out?
Jeff Gordon: Ah, Bomar again. Lot of love out there for him as a project QB.
Creighton has a case, but Arizona played a challenging non-conference schedule. That decided everything.
Blues . . . out. I love the charge, but all those road games at the end is tough.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
With Holt now gone any word on any free agent WR's like Engrim or Harrison being brought in to take a look at? I know we're in a youth movement but I'd think they could serve as a mentor to the young guys like Avery and Burton.
Jeff Gordon: Not sure I'd go that old, since this rebuilding will take a couple of years.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
How do you see the Rams draft going if it was held this weekend?
I'm hoping something like:
1-Curry
2-Loadholt a roadgrader for the RT spot
3-Francois DT from LSU
Jeff Gordon: Sounds like a plan . . .
That's it for this week. See you next Monday!
Mike: Scratch that Gordo he hit his 1st one today! Just like you said he'll be just fine
Jeff Gordon: I feel pretty good about the offense. Let's see about Skip's deal still. . . .
See you next week.
