JohnnyN: Hey Gordo,
Congrats to the Tigers. How do you see this game going and will Mizzou's press D be able to contain Memphis' high octane offense? Thanks. J. |
| Jeff Gordon: After watching the Tigers struggle to defend the dribble drives of Marquette -- and struggle to keep the Golden Eagles off the glass -- I'd be pretty worried about this match-up. Poor Leo Lyons had issues at the defensive end. The Memphis Tigers like playing fast, their big guys can run and they have more depth than the Golden Eagles. In addition to forcing some turnovers, Mizzou has to goad Memphis into taking some bad shots. And Mizzou has to fetch those rebounds. |
|
DisCard: Having spent the last couple of weeks chasing the Cards around Florida, from Clearwater to Jupiter, I can tell you that this is the best set of athletes I've seen on this team since the late 60's.
Both Greene's look like winners and I expect a big year from K. Greene. The starting pitching has been extremely impressive. Loshe looks well worth the money. Pineiro looks poised for an excellent contract run.
The right handed relief is deep and Motte looks ready to close some doors. The Cards will need Reyes to be as advertised if the lefty side is to get the job done.
The youngsters appear especially talented and deep. T. Greene has a huge arm, plus range and hits line drives with authority. He looks like a muscular Don Kessinger. Jay & Craig seemed to hit everything thrown to them. Freese looks very comfortable playing defense, but it's a little early to judge his bat.
Finally Rasmus certainly made TLR think about his order with Rasmus' hitting display on Saturday. This guy would be a force hitting second and he has speed.
I see a legitimate contender. Do you see it that way? |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes, because the progress across the board has been good. A guy like Hawksworth could fill a rotation hole if somebody gets hurt. He wasn't there a year ago. When a guy slips, as Mather did at the plate this spring, then there are options -- such as Freese, who will get his crack at filling in for Glaus. That is the beauty of depth. The Cards haven't had this in some time. |
|
| Jim: Can Jason Motte solve our closer problem? |
| Jeff Gordon: He has the tools. He seems fearless. TLR can ease him in by splitting the role for a while between multiple candidates. (Even Reyes could finish a game or two, if the other side is lefty-loaded.) He is further along than Perez, who health (ankle, shoulder) and wildness are concerns. But Chris will become an asset sooner than later. |
|
dave cobler: Hey Gordo;
Here we are two weeks from the season opener. Can you tell me your thoughts on Skips progress? Is he trending up at a good pace?
TLR apparently has dished out a 3B opportunity and placed it on Freece's plate. Who do you see starting at 3B on April 6th?
Thank you Jeff!!! |
Jeff Gordon: Third base has been reopened. Mather can lock it up IF he can regroup and hammer some balls. Freese is better defensively, but he is just a year removed from Class A ball. He is still learning at the plate.
Skip is trending the right way. Remember, TLR can make 2B his double-switch position. Each game, Skip will either move to the outfield as part of a double swtich or leave the game. Either way, a real infielder will move to 2B to finish the game. |
|
Dave From Ohio: Gordo,
I was wondering if there is any news on Billy Bajema and if he is still expected to sign? Also, are the Rams going to get a receiver before the draft, or do they expect to go into the draft with Avery, Burton, and Stanley as there top 3 receivers?
As always, thanks very much for taking the time to answer questions.
Dave From Ohio |
| Jeff Gordon: Haven't heard about the tight end. Check back with our Rams blog for regular free-agent updates. As for WR, Billy Devaney has made it clear the team will address that position through all means possible. But Avery, Burton and Stanley is not a bad starting point at WR. |
|
| Alan: Gordon - If the Rams draft Curry, how much of an improvement will the Rams have made on Defense in addition to the free agents they signed and the the good defensive players they kept? |
Jeff Gordon: Curry would improve the Rams at the point of attack. His addition would make Witherspoon a better player, too, since Will could play to his strengths. The upgrade at safety is a big step, too. And if Carriker gets healthy, he and Long should take steps forward next season.
Don't write off Tye Hill, either. Butler's arrival will make him a better player. |
|
Stumped Mitchell: Jeff,
Has Jacob Bell ever played tackle in his life? Also, are the Rams bring in any wr's for visits in free agency? What wr's are they interested in the 2nd/3rd round?
HAve you seen the new cartoon handiquacks? |
| Jeff Gordon: He has filled in there. But the return of Adam Goldberg alleviates that emergency need. The FA receiving corps is pretty picked over, save for some older guys and some guys who got in trouble. I'd like to see a big guy like Hackett added to the mix, but we'll see. The draft is anybody's guess, but, yes, there will be a pile of guys to pick from after the first round. |
|
Buzz: Gordo,
If Marc Bulger gets his act together, how would you rate him as a potential West Coast QB? I'm speaking in terms of smarts, release and accuracy? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: The smarts, release and accuracy are all there. But can the confident and pocket presence return? The Rams need THAT guy to come back. The tools are fine, but his overall play regressed badly. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Opening Day is two weeks away! Who do you think will get the lion's share of playing time at 3B while Glaus is out? Is Freese healthy and coming on? Is Mather even a lock to make the bench, much less the starting lineup? As much as I am not a Brendan Ryan fan, he may be a temporary leadoff candidate (against lefties) if Skip can't cut it at 2B and Rasmus needs to adjust to ML pitching. |
| Jeff Gordon: Ryan is more of a No. 9 hitter when he plays. Right now Skip is still your leadoff batter and second baseman. I love Rasmus hitting second. Freese could take a run at 3B if Mather's offensive struggle continues. And if Mather's bat never comes back this spring, he could open at Memphis while trying to get that back. |
|
Manheim rams: With the Lions getting Julian Peterson in a trade, it looks like they may pass over Curry. The Rams need and OT, but many top teams have very good OT's that were not #1 picks. Wouldn't Curry have more of an impact this year and look for an OT with the 2nd pick?
Thanks
Jerry |
| Jeff Gordon: The Lions seem more likely to go tackle (J. Smith) or quarterback (Stafford) than Curry, but their contract talks with agents for the top few players could dictate the pick. If Curry is there, I'd take him and add OTs later. Goldberg's return eases some of the urgency at tackle. |
|
Kevin: Jeff,
If Reyes does not pass his physical would the Cards pursue a different lefty? Also, is it true that many on the Mexican team suffered from a viral sickness near the end of their part in the recent tournament?
Last week Hrabosky said about the 2nd base position that a lot can transpire between now and the end of spring training. Any idea what he could mean by that?
Thanks,
Kevin |
| Jeff Gordon: For a "lot to transpire" at second base, TLR would have to bail on his Schumaker experiment. And I don't see that happening now, especially with the team possessing so many other 2Bs to support him. As for Reyes, the guy pitched in the WBC, so you would expect him he to pass his physical. If he has suffered some previously unreported injury, then, yes, the Cards could void his contract and go another direction. Given Reyes' three-year track record, it would take something dramatic for the Cards to sour on him. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Prediction time. Who do you see being the:
*Breakout Pitcher of 2009 (ala Kyle McClellan)?
*Breakout Bat of the Year (ala Ryan Ludwick)?
*In-season call-up of the year (ala Chris Perez/Joe Mather)?
*"Where did he come from?" contributor of the year (ala Franklin in '07, Lohse/Wellemeyer in '08)? |
Jeff Gordon: *Breakout Pitcher of 2009 (ala Kyle McClellan)? Jason Motte
*Breakout Bat of the Year (ala Ryan Ludwick)? Colby Rasmus
*In-season call-up of the year (ala Chris Perez/Joe Mather)? Jon Jay, IF somebody gets hurt or traded in the outfield.
*"Where did he come from?" contributor of the year (ala Franklin in '07, Lohse/Wellemeyer in '08)? Josh Kinney. |
|
Rick: I would like to see the Rams pick up another 2nd or 3rd round pick in this draft. Are they inclined to do so and have you heard of any possibilities along these lines?
RS |
| Jeff Gordon: They couldn't get such a pick for either Holt or Pace, so now their only option would be to trade down in the first round. Doing that this year won't be easy -- and if Curry is there at No. 2, there would be less incentive to do so. |
|
Cards4520: Thanks for taking questions
Mizzou seems to be a team on a mission. What do you think their chances are (percentage wise) winning Thursday night?
Do you think that Memphis will follow Marq. strategy for beating the "40 min. of hell"? |
| Jeff Gordon: Memphis is deeper, so those Tigers will be able to play at that pace. The key for Memphis will be taking call of the ball as well as Marquette did for most of the second half. Mizzou will have to be better on the defensive boards, by a lot, and better at heading off the dribble drives that Marquette used so well on the open court. |
|
| LonghornRam: Gordo, any reason why the Rams haven't resigned Dane Looker? Are they interested in bringing him back? |
| Jeff Gordon: Dane would be OK depth, but the new staff sees a pretty thin track record there. As the Rams go to a new offense, there is less advantage in bringing back holdover depth guys. |
|
Ram_Malavasi: Gordo:
If Curry is not available when the Rams make their first-round selection (either at #2 or later in case of a trade down), or if they go OT in the first, is Rey Maualuga a likely option for the second round pick? I've heard that his stock has dropped somewhat so that he might fall out of first round contention, and I just feel like the Rams really need a difference-maker at MLB. While Maualuga might not be stellar in coverage, I definitely think he can bring it in run support. Your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes, he would add some beef at the point of attack. But could he play at all in passing downs? And could the Rams protect him in their base defense? It will be interesting to see if another team sees him as a full-time player and takes him in lower part of the first round. |
|
| Bill in Kentucky: Hi, love your column. 3 quick questions. Who do you think ends up with the left field starting job? Rasmus or Duncan. 2. Do you believe Glaus comes back at 100%? Thirdly, would you consider Kentucky to be part of the Cardinals primary market? I know this used to be Reds country, but I seem to notice a rise in Cardinal fans. Thanks for taking my questions and Go Cardinals! |
Jeff Gordon: The Cards still have lots of fans in Kentucky from their Louisville days. And the western side of the state has a lot of fans.
I see Rasmus playing most of the time, now that he has gotten over the hump at the plate. Duncan could platoon with Ludwick for a while, since Ryan is scuffling.
Glaus will be fine. This was not a major injury. His recovery is ahead of schedule. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
I live in Milwaukee and the general sentiment here (of course there are plenty of local homers, as anywhere) is that it would be a stretch for this team to finish behind the Cardinals. Of couse, they lost their 2 horses, but Gallardo will be a very good pitcher. They have a nice lineup, although it is feast or famine. What is your take on the 2009 Milwaukee Brewers, and do you feel they will be serious competition for our beloved Cardinals? If not the Brewers, is there reason to believe the Astros or Reds could overtake us? |
Jeff Gordon: The Brewers have bullpen issues, defensive issues and offensive inconsistency issues. Also, they can't match a Carpenter-Wainwright-Lohse-Wellemeyer-Pineiro rotation.
Barring devastating injuries -- which we saw last year -- the Cards have a shot to win 95 games. Look for a big-time offensive improvement as the year unfolds. Their overall depth is better, so they will be able to smooth out whatever rough spots develop during the 162-game grind.
The Reds could be fun to watch if that pitching takes off. There is a lot of talent in that rotation. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
As it stands right now, do you think Colby Rasmus will be in St. Louis on April 6? |
| Jeff Gordon: Sure. He has made progress at the plate and there is no denying his overall baseball ability. |
|
| Alex Alvidrez: The longer O. Pace remains on the market, doesn't the Rams chances of resigning him increase? |
| Jeff Gordon: No, I would expect him to move on to a contender. If every other team took a pass on him, then he might entertain this notion. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
The Cards play 16 games in April against the likes of the Cubs, Mets, Braves and D-Backs. The Cubs play 13 against the Cards, Brewers and D-Backs. The Brewers play 10 against the Cubs, Phillies, Mets and D-Backs. Bearing this in mind, who is in first, second and third on May 1 (when we hopefully have a healthy and productive Glaus back)? |
| Jeff Gordon: I would say Cubs-Cards-Brewers. When Glaus returns and starts hitting, this team could have a tremendous offense. Ludwick's poor spring is a bit of a concern, too, so April won't be this team's best month. |
|
| tom lyons: why would the rams announce alex barron as left tackle if he wouldnt be? I know the ram's need help at tackle but why would they mess with Barron's head and tell him that if it weren't true. It seems counter to what the coaching staff is going to do. Plus what is the offensive philosophy going to be?Lots of power running with a lead fullback and short quick strikes then play action deep ball? thanks, i really like what the coaching staff and administration have down so far. |
Jeff Gordon: Nothing is set in stone. Barron could play left tackle if he does well in the off-season stuff. If he doesn't, he could play right tackle again or sit.
If Barron is that easily rattled, then he shouldn't play pro football for a living. |
|
FloTrain: I almost threw up a couple times yesterday listening to the announcers lovefest over Marquette making their one-sided officiated comeback yesterday. That was downright ridiculous! I don't know what was worse: The officiating or the announcers. Actually they both were equally bad...
I absolutely HATE the fact that MU is in for the same if not worse treatment against Memphis. Not trying to be a homer myself, but playing 5 on 5 will be hard enough. They don't need to play 8 on 5.
With that said, how does MU beat BOTH Memphis and (more than likely) UConn this weekend? Does any other team have a harder road to the Final Four? As soon as I saw the brackets I thought, "WOW, CMA should be given a BLANK CHECK if he makes it out alive to Indianapolis!" |
| Jeff Gordon: I didn't see any problem with the officiating. The Tigers got caught playing tag on the Marquette drives. They weren't even slowing down the assaults at the rim, so they couldn't get a second defender in position to draw charges. |
|
| Gabriel 2 Snow: Hello Gordo, we all want Bulger to just tear up the league the rest of his career. But I am wondering how the Ram decision makers are viewing this draft based on Marcs contract. We all know Bulger was a lock this year due to his deal. I am wondering what the cap hit is if the worst happens, Bulger tanks, and they want to part with him after one year. Are you aware what his 2010 cap number is? I assume they will draft a QB who they think has a chance to play in a year or two if+need+be.+Thanks+Gordo |
Jeff Gordon: The cap number is manageable next year because he has no guaranteed money in 2010 and the pro-rated remainder of his signing bonus shrinks, too. So if he flops this year, he could be done.
As for the draft, the Rams are likely to add a young guy. This won't be a huge priority, however, given the remaining needs. |
|
Ed C: Gordo,
At the end of the 1st half Marquette had 17 foul shots to Mizzou's 3. Don't you think that advantage kept Marquette in the game in the 1st half? It seemed to me the game was called one way for Marquette and a different way for Mizzou. That coach had alot of nerve complaining about the officiating at the end, IMO Marquette wouldn't even have been that close except for the officiating. And evidenced by replays really the calls that went against Marquette were correct. I'm a homer I know. |
| Jeff Gordon: When you let guys drive that easily, fouling is inevitable. Mizzou will really have to focus on their ball defense the next few days -- because you know how Memphis will attack. |
|
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
There are 10 official ST games left. Who, as of today, do you think has a ticket to St. Louis with the biggest chance of losing it? On the other side, who is ticketed for Memphis that has the greatest chance of gaining the call to St. Louis? |
| Jeff Gordon: Really, the only thing in play in the fill-in third base role. Mather had it and let it slip away, due to his offensive slump. Freese is getting another look today. The Mather/Freese equation is about the only debate point left. |
|
| mike in PC: Jeff, I know we have a couple of weeks before the season starts, but do you think that Tony and Dunc might be leaning toward Motte as the closer at least for the beginning of the season. He has been lights out. Eight appearances/innings, 13 strike outs, four saves, not to mention 1.08 era. If he continues at this pace, it should be a no brainer that he would be the closer. Thanks.... |
| Jeff Gordon: Motte clearly has earned some late-inning looks. He shouldn't get the title of closer any time soon, but TLR is positioning to be one of the guys he leans on to start the season. And rightfully so. |
|
| Anderw G Teutopolis IL: With all the lack of aggressiveness by the front office, are we saving money to throw at Pujols when his contact is up? |
| Jeff Gordon: Let's see the world is in another year or two. That is when the Cards will have to decide whether to really buck up for Albert. The economy is so bad now that predicting that situation is impossible. The whole baseball industry is in for a big adjustment. |
|
ncdc: Dear Gordo,
Have you heard if there is any interest on the Rams part in free agent DT Shaun Cody? As a three+ year starter for Detroit, he hasn't quite lived up to the USC and 2nd round hype, but at 6-4 308 would be very good as Carriker's backup/rotational player, IMO. Your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: I would check with Jim Thomas to see if there is any interest there. |
|
| PossumBoy9: If Matthew Stafford is available with the #2 overall pick, the Rams would be crazy not to draft him. Do you concur? |
| Jeff Gordon: Nope, not at all. The Rams will NOT pay another QB big money this year. |
|
Greg: Greetings Gordo...interesting win for Mizzou over Marquette. It appears Mizzou was too syccessful too early and let up or maybe Marquette adjusted better than Mizzou expected. Tremendous matchup coming up Thursday against Memphis. Loyalties aside, a prediction (from you).
Greg |
| Jeff Gordon: If Memphis watches the game video, those Tigers will attack the rim all night. If Memphis plays smart, it wins. If Memphis throws the ball around and hikes up stupid shots, Mizzou has a chance. But it's tough not to pick Memphis, since Calipari has been there before. |
|
cmbaskerville: Hi Jeff,
There's been a lot of talk about the Rams drafting Aaron Curry in the first round. Do you think it's likely the team could do this and pick-up a starting OT through the draft or free agency?
Thanks,
Chris from San Diego |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't see any starting-caliber OTs left in free agency, but the Rams are almost certain to take an OT at some point early in this draft. |
|
| Tackleberry: Do you think that the "uncertainty" of this year's line-up, a lot like last year's, creates too many opportunities for LaRussa to constantly tinker with it and thus the players never develop the defined roles and the team lacks a cohesiveness? I'd just love to see the batting order be set, boom, boom, boom, with maybe a change here or there based on a player getting a day off. |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't much uncertainly -- and I see a much more potent offense. The only questions are Schumaker, who is progressing at this point; the closer role, which ought to got to Motte; and the two- to three-week replacement stint at third base. Once Glaus returns, the lineup is largely set. We might see a Duncan/Ludwick split if Ryan doens't find his stroke. Other than that, the rotation is set and the bullpen ought to come together. |
|
Adam: Gordo,
Thanks for taking my questions.
1.) I remember Luis Alicea booting balls left and right in 1996, ultimately being benched in favor of the .200-hitting Mike Gallego. What's your sense of the contingency plan should the "Schumaker at 2b" experiment fall on its face? Do you feel the Cards as committed as they say they are to the Thurstons/Ryans/Bardens of the world, or is there interest in going outside the organization?
2.) McClellan has had a remarkably poor spring. Given his work last year (excluding the last 6-or-so weeks), I assume he's got a spot on the big club locked up regardless, but is there any organizational concern that he's not up to the task? The Perez injury opened up a spot for Thompson; at what point is McClellan in jeopardy?
3.) Haven't been back to StL since college (2002), but I'm going back for a week this summer for the ASG. Any recommendations you can make?
Thanks for your time. |
Jeff Gordon: Bring your wallet for the All-Star Game. Downtown will be on fire, but nothing will be cheap.
If McClellan continues to labor, the team will have lots of alternative if he can't get anybody out. Thompson's strong spring is reassuring.
At second base, Ryan would be an OK fallback batting ninth as the second leadoff guy. |
|
Matt from Atlanta: Hi gordo
In your opinion why do you think they continue to scratch Tyson Scrachan for Woywitca. I think Scrachan makes better decisions with the puck and is a better skater. To me he seems to be a better pick. What do you think?
Thanks |
Jeff Gordon: But . . . Tyson has had his share of meltdowns, too. His limited experience is probably the X-factor here. Woywitka has the wheels, but his decision making leaves much to desired.
Next year, this should be a moot point as the Note gets their guys back. |
|
Ed Johnson: Dear Jeff
Since we need a MLB and if we drafted Curry we could move him to SLB, why not sign Napoleon Harris at MLB? His size (6'3" and 255 lbs) and age (30) would fit as a veteran to help the younger guys and the guy still has range! What do you think? |
| Jeff Gordon: Even if Curry comes here, I'd like to see one more LB come aboard. Not sold at all on this group. |
|
Ray Ram: Is there any chance that the Rams will get rid of the boring Blue and Gold and go back to the Super Bowl winning Uniforms?
They are so much better looking and besides, what have the uniforms gotten us but Misery!
The Blue and White would be an upgrade as well!
Please get rid of the Notre Dame Gold and bring back the Real Uniforms!
I know they are wearing them a few times this season, but would the management team ever send out a poll to see what uniforms the fans would prefer?
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: No change. It's all about the marketing. This is a more modern look. |
|
Leecard: Thanks for taking the questions, I look forward to the discussions.
Recently LaRussa used a lineup of:
Schumaker - 2B
Rasmus - CF
Pujols - 1B
Ankiel - RF
Ludwick - LF
Greene - SS
Molina - C
Freese - 3B
9 - Pitcher
At this time, with 2 weeks to go until the start of the season, do you think that lineup is possible during the regular season? I like that lineup. Of course that means that Rasmus makes the team as a starting outfielder - does it look like that will happen at this time? I also like how Duncan has been hitting this spring. Those 4 outfielders offer some good offensive potential. All 4 could get plenty of playing time.
Also, since I haven't heard much about it lately I have to think Schumaker is doing OK at 2B. Is that accurate? |
| Jeff Gordon: I like that lineup, but, of course, the pitcher will hit eighth. If Freese gets a two- or three-week run at 3B, he would be a natural No. 9 hitter. But when Glaus returns, I don't know how he could put any of those guys in the No. 9 spot. |
|
Brian: Would you consider Curly (Marquette's coach) a sore loser or a nut job? My favorite part was at the end of the game he was cursing like a sailor but had his hand over his mouth.
In all seriousness Marquette had several calls go their way in the beginning of the second half. |
| Jeff Gordon: I thought Marquette earned those breaks by playing a step quicker. But, yes, those end-of-the game hysterics reflected poorly on the coach. He had no beef. And the baseline call was a great call. So was the 24-second violation. |
|
Coins: Thanks for taking my question. Mines a quick one.
Yes or no. Do the Blues make the playoffs?
Thanks Again! |
| Jeff Gordon: No. The Calgary win was huge, but there are too many road games and too many teams in the mix. |
|
| Brian: What happens if once the regular season starts and the Schumaker experiment fails right off the bat? What would the Cardinals do? |
| Jeff Gordon: First, I'd expect the Cards to be patient. Schumaker is a worker, so I'd be surprised if he really blew up. If he does, that is what Brendan Ryan is there for. |
|
| Leecard: I wanted to make a comment about Freese. He has proven nothing yet but right now the Cards are fortunate to have him. I am anxious to see how he performs - assuming he makes the team. How many people are giving credit to Mo' for making that deal? It seemed more like an Edmonds salary dump (which played a role, no doubt) and Mo' took some heat for trading Edmonds at the time of the deal. Looks like a big win for the Cards right now. To me it looks like another under appreciated move by the Cards' GM. |
| Jeff Gordon: Freese really made an impressive jump from A ball to AAA ball last year. That made it a good deal. That he could fill in so quickly, due to Glaus' injury, makes it even better. |
|
| Herron Rowland: What is the report on Lance Lynn the rookie out of Ole Miss? Any Chance for double A or does he have a ways to go? |
| Jeff Gordon: The last Vuch report I saw on him was positive. Stay turned to the Bird Land blog for more. |
|
stlcardfan78: How many wins would you guess the Cardinals would have with Carpenter in the line up everyday? Without Carpenter?
Since the 2002 season, Carpenter has been out 4 and in 3. I know the guy is absolutely electric when healthy, and I know he wants to be healthy, and the Cardinals want him to be healthy...but by counting on him to be healthy...isn't that kinda reckless?
Any big league team must have the backups and minor league talent or the ability to acquire new talent to account for injuries during the season. No team is immune.
Wouldn't it then be negligent NOT to count on injuries as part of your business model? You KNOW they will occur. How do the Cardinals stack up to fill those holes that are going to present themselves? I know they say we have a strongish rotation in Memphis, but we're talking about filling some pretty big shoes. Somebody has to step into and play that same role successfully in order to win those games...and then to be a shut down guy like Carpenter is capable of...it's an almost impossible shoe to fill.
I don't think the Cardinals have done enough to hedge against the upcoming season. That's my opinion. Maybe they can count on "over achieving" again...but how long will St. Louis allow its baseball town to be labeled as over achievers?
Do or do not, there is no try. Win or win not...but you won't fool Cardinal Nation...for long...I hope. |
Jeff Gordon: Your concerns on Carpenter are well-founded.
Trouble is, if they signed a sixth starter and then put him in the bullpen, that might not work so well. Right now they have a five-man rotation here and a solid five-man rotation in Memphis -- plus Thompson or McClellan to fill in for the short term. I think that's OK. If they need to trade, they have tons of chips now. |
|
Bruce Bourquin: Jim,
If the Rams are going to stick with drafting an offensive tackle in the first round, and only if Detroit drafts Stafford at No. 1, don't you think it'd be wise to trade down with the Cleveland Browns at No. 5 overall and pick up a third-rounder? That way, assuming Cleveland is hoping to draft Michael Curry, St. Louis could still get its tackle, either Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith. I am guessing Seattle would pick either Monroe or Smith and Kansas City won't pick a tackle. The risk is another team trades up with either K.C. or Seattle and drafts a tackle, but St. Louis could go with Oher from Ole Miss.
What do you think?
Bruce Bourquin
Yorba Linda, CA |
| Jeff Gordon: Who says they will take a tackle? It's still quite possible they will take Curry. |
|
| saintlooney: Gordo, any chance DeWitt can get his buddy George W to throw out the first pitch for our new softball field? But seriously, do you see the Blues recalling Legace should they make the playoffs? Personally I thought that bridge was burned, but it does make some sense. |
| Jeff Gordon: Manny is playing really well at Peoria, so I would hope the bridge isn't burned. He could still come in handy. Mason isn't Superman. |
|
Rich: Good afternoon Gordo,
There is a rumor the Rams are interested in trading for New Orleans restricted free agent WR Lance Moore.
Do you know if there is anything behind this?
Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: That's a thought, but the Rams aren't in position to give up a whole lot there. |
|
| YoCards: Do the Cardinals think Luis Perdomo will be returned to them by the Giants? |
| Jeff Gordon: Early on, he was pitching well enough to stick with the Giants and the gamble didn't look so good. |
|
| Chris Graff: Gordo, do you see the Rams taking a quarterback in this years draft? Personally, I dont see how they can't. What are your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: They'll take somebody at that position. Funny, but Josh Freeman has gone from a middle round guy to an upper first-round guy. That position is interesting this year. |

-LEADING: Leading After 1st Period Blues are 13-5-4, Leading After 2nd Period, an amazing 22-2-2.
-TRAILING: When Trailing After 1st Period Blues are 7-15-2, Trailing After 2nd Period, an alarming 4-21-3, although we just hit 4 with that awesome comeback vs Calgary who I believe lost 1st time this season when leading after 2 Periods.
-SCORING FIRST: When Blues Score First:18-7-4, When Blues Get Scored on First 15-23-5
-SHOOT-OUTS: Blues 2-2 in Shoot-Outs at HOME, 3-4 in Shoot-Outs AWAY. Overall Blues have scored 12 Goals on 31 Shoot-Out attempts. Ironically Blues have had 12 goals scored against on 31 Shoot-Out attempts |
Jeff Gordon: Your assessment is right on, although Detroit could pack it in a bit as the playoffs near.
Going forward, the Blues have to clean up their defensive play. Replacing limited "D" with more skilled "D" --Johnson, Brewer, Pietrangelo, Cole -- will address that.
The team also needs more 5-on-5 firepower. The Blues cant' live or die on the PP. The development of Perron, Oshie and Berglund is vital, along with Kariya's return. More offense would make this team more capable of digging out.

superjim: Hi Gordo,
I'm probably the only one, but I'd like to see Alex Barron at left tackle. Two years ago he had his best season at LT (3.5 sacks in 15 games), and I think he can replicate it. I also think that him being in a contract year is an extra incentive for him to play hard this season, so we should see the best he can do I believe. As for Jacob Bell at RT, i'm sceptical at best. He isn't even close to being the right weight. These two facts in mind...I still wouldn't draft a tackle 2nd overall. I would take curry, let's get some presence on the defense and solidify what would then be a good linebacker core. The d-line should take strides this season (Carriker, Long, Ryan are all better for their experiences, Long in particular could have a breakout season a-la Mario Williams' 2nd season), and with an improved safety group this season, we could become a top 10 defence (with Spagnuolo's leadership). Then in the 2nd round, let's take a RT and I suggest we trade our 3rd round pick for a WR who can start. What do you think of that as a potential plan Gordo?
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: I can live with Goldberg at RT with a second-round pick fighting for that gig. So I have no beef with your scenario. |
|
| YoCards: Pirates and Padres both need pitching. Will the Cardinals trade Brad Thompson or any other bullpen pitcher? |
| Jeff Gordon: With McClellan scuffling, Brad is a valuable guy -- and he is short-term rotation insurance. |
|
| HEG: Gordo the Mizzou basketball team has surpassed any expectations I had for them going into the season- congrats to them up to this point- their match-up with Memphis will be very difficult to say the least-they find it difficult to match up with a huge presents inside-ex.- Dozier for Memphis- Mizzou would have to play a near perfect game much like Villinova did when they won the championship- Re; the Rams- I feel they need to draft a skilled position player with their 2nd pick- the cards need to start Carp on opening day. Agree or disagree on these comments. |
| Jeff Gordon: Disagree on the skilled position statement, but otherwise I agree. |
|
| YoCards: Schumaker seems to have settled down at second base and he continues to hit. Do you think he will be successful at that position? |
| Jeff Gordon: He's survive defensively and do enough offensively to keep the leadoff gig. |
|
STEVE: Gordo
Is it time to worry about 3rd base? |
| Jeff Gordon: No. Glaus ought to be back before the end of the month. Worst-case scenario has Freese, a good defender with some pop, filling in as the No. 9 hitter. The only way this really gets ugly is if Freese's ankle injury prevents him from playing. |
|
Ineeda Hammer: Have you noticed that we only have 1 NFL quality RB on the roster?
Do you think S. Jackson can go through the entire yr without missing a game? He never has, as far as I can remember.
Isn't our new team focus now going to be "Running the Ball"?
Did you notice the difference in our offense last yr without Jackson?
Am I the only one in panick mode about this? Have you heard anything from the team indicating that they have realized the Black-Hole that exists? |
| Jeff Gordon: Running back is just one of the many positions the team still has to fill. |
|
| RamsLife: Hey Jeff whats up man? As of last night and today there have nbeen rerports that the Lions are going to take OT Jason Smith with there #1 Pick. I know it is just a rumor but if they were to do that who do you think we will take with our #2 Pick? IMO if Eugene Monore's knees are healthy and he is all good to go I would defiently take him over Aaron Curry. Curry scares me because one he is not a True MLB and two for some reason I have this feeling he is going to be the next Veron Gholston who had a great Combine but sucked in his rookie year. What do you think? |
| Jeff Gordon: Curry could play outside, too, and still help this team. Witherspoon is the only strong LB on the roster as we speak. |
|
Matt R: Gordo,
Random question.......do you see Motte changing his number (from #60) when he makes the team for opening day? Thanks!
Matt from Massachusetts |
| Jeff Gordon: He may wait a year before he goes there, but we'll see. |
|
gpm: 1. What about moving Shane Robinson to 2B? Offensively, he seems to resemble a right-handed hitting Skip.
2. I think Mike Anderson is a great coach. I hope he stays at Missouri for a long, long time. He's somewhat of a well-kept secret for now, but as time goes forward, he will become well-known for developing young men and players. |
| Jeff Gordon: Schumaker's college background and famous work ethic made him a good choice for this experiment. Given the other infielders the organization has, more experiments shouldn't be necessary. |
|
| Jan Braden: I'm still concerned about second base and the Skip experiment. Seems like we have an abundance of left hand hitting outfielders and two second basemen(Schumaker and Thurston). Anyone out there and available to the Cards in a trade? And with this scenario, I don't see how Rasmus breaks camp with the big league club. I still think the Braves could be an option with their need for younger, proven outfield help! |
Jeff Gordon: Why trade for a converted outfielder, Kelly Johnson, when you have one of your own.
I agree that something needs to give in the outfield. I agree that there are too many lefty-hitting OFs.
Rasmus got his numbers up by pounding the Nats one day, but he is a legit big league outfielder. Unless this team gives up on Schumaker at 2B, I can't see them holding Colby back. |
|
| jyhenders: Seeing that this week is the owners meetings, what is a possible trade you could foresee the Rams making to better their draft positioning? I don't think we have anybody we could afford to give up besides Pisa or Little. Is there a team willing to take either in exchange for #1's and their #2? Also, do you think K. Darby is ready to back up jackson at RB? |
Jeff Gordon: Pisa can't have much trade value and the team needs Little. The Rams draft position is fine as it is. I'd take Curry rather than move back for an OT and another pick, if that chance arose.
No, I don't see Darby as a legit No. 2. |
|
| tom lyons: I would like to know about defensive tackle depth is glover gone? when i looked at the depth chart on the rams web page it shows Carriker, ryan and glover. It seems to me this area is just as important as any othe position |
| Jeff Gordon: It is a concern, like so many. Just one more hole to fill. |
|
Todd from Michigan: Hi Gordo
Great job as always and thank you for your time.
Gordo any possibility that the Rams would trade WLB Pisa for SLB Bobby Carpenter since Dallas has him on the trading block. I know a lot of money for Dallas to absorb but a good fit for both teams. |
| Jeff Gordon: If somebody wants to trade for Pisa, great. I can't imagine it, but great. |
|
BrandonRAMS: Hi Gordo,
You think there will be anymore FA signings before the draft?
Anybody we are trying to sign now?
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams are shopping, but what's left on the market isn't great. Most of what is left is depth. The older name guys left are better suited for contenders. |
|
| Jerry from Memphis: I just saw that Glaus will be out until May. Is that the real reason Freese was returned to the MLB camp? When do you think Glaus will return? |
| Jeff Gordon: Freese returned because Mather couldn't hit a lick. Whether Glaus misses two, three or four weeks -- which would be the worst-case, right now -- his successor will have to hit at least a little bit. |
|
| BillP: Hey Jeff, just a comment here. Can you imagine the Blues going into the last game of the year needing 2 points and the game goes into a shootout? The whole season could come down to a shootout...........ouch........Have good week ! |
| Jeff Gordon: Ah, the post-game skills competition. Whichever team gets the No. 8 spot will get it in shootouts. |
|
| Nick: I have not heard anything about Jim Edmonds. Is he going to retire? Are there any teams interested? Any news at all??? |
| Jeff Gordon: No teams interested, hence the lack of news. |
|
Lance "Big Seed" Goldberg: Hey Jeff,
Why does every single mock draft have the Rams taking an offensive tackle?
All the Rams writers (except JT) and a lot of their fans want Aaron
Curry, or even Crabtree. It seems to me that the Rams have MANY holes to
fill, so why not take the best player available? Also, picking more of
a skill player will sell more seats !!! What do you think?
Thanks, Lance aka "Big Seed of the Melonheads" |
| Jeff Gordon: OT is the logical choice, but, again, that second overall pick is precious. The player taken there will HAVE to be a stud. OT is the safe, logical choice. And maybe the Rams do it. But why not take a chance at getting an OT later? |
|
Dan: Jeff,
Any chance that the Rams could trade for Jay Cutler? Could we package Bulger and a draft pick (a 2 or a 3, both are high picks)? I know that the Rams will take a beating in the salary cap, but could they make this work? None of the teams that I see in the running for this guy are offering a QB, only draft picks. Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: If Denver would do that, great. But Marc would be hugely uncomfortable in that market. That is a brutal job. I don't see the Broncos going there at all |
|
donnie avery: gordo, do i have the talent to be a number one for 10yrs or so?
do you still think i was a bad choice last year in the draft?
did i deserve to be picked before desean jackson and all the other recievers i was picked before? |
| Jeff Gordon: Avery showed his potential. He is a big-play guy. But . . . he must refine his route-running and master this offense. |
|
| Mr.Bad to the Bone: Thanks Gordo for taking my questions? First off on the Blues what do you see as their greatest off season need(s)? and on the Rams what are the chances of them taking Aaron Curry or possibly trading out of the 2nd spot and getting additional picks. In my opinion the Rams need players and trading down from 2 to say 6 or 7 might be a way to do that. Your thoughts and thanks again. |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams could get an OT later in the round, so that would make sense. An extra pick would help. But . . . I'm digging in on Curry. He and Long would be great building blocks. |
|
| donnie avery: i was playing madden when brian dawkins caught a pick over me, then i hit sticked him and made him fumble, should i get some work at corner? i have the size right? and will justin king be any good? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Rams really liked King before he got hurt, so if he heals, he will be a big piece of the rebuilding process. |
|
Dave Hafner: Gordo, Please show a little love for my Arizona Wildcats making it ti the "Sweet Sisteen". Not bad for a team that most people thought didn't deserve to be in the tourney.
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Arizona played a real non-conference schedule, so it earned the shot -- and that experienced paid off. |
|
| J. Long: Hey, Gordo just wondering, Im a big Marc Bulger fan and want him to do well but I don't know if he has it in him anymore. Do you think he has what it takes to help this team to the playoffs or the Super Bowl in the next 2-3 years? |
| Jeff Gordon: I'm skeptical of that. |
|
BradV: Hey Gordo! Tipsheet is one of the main reasons I log onto the Post Dispatch sports page every day... love it!!!
With Duncan, Ankiel and Ludwick a lock to go North, and Schumaker still listed as an outfielder, do you see Mather making the trip as a 5th outfielder, or does Rasmus still have an outside chance? Has Freese taken the lead in the 3rd base competition, or will we see Mather in that spot a few more times in the next couple of weeks? |
| Jeff Gordon: I'm a big Mather guy and had him locked in as the fifth outfielder/extra corner infielder. But . . . he has to hit to do all that. I see him offering great value long term because he has power and can play so many places. |
|
Jim H: ok first time post with a question, please don't throw me under the bus if i ask something stupid.
glass half full:
3 best surprises this spring training that nobody saw coming? (provided there are 3)
glass half empty:
3 biggest disapointments this spring training?
thanks! |
Jeff Gordon: Good surprises: P.J. Walters (success without a fastball), Blake Hawksworth's bounceback and Chris Carpenter's strong showing.
Bad surprises: Mather's wayward bat, Freese's lingering ankle injury, McClellan's struggle. |
|
| Jeepster: Jeff: Has McClellen pitched his way back to Memphis? |
| Jeff Gordon: Not yet, but he needs to get some results. No need to fail here and set his career back. |
|
| lstein: Thanks for taking my question. To have some perspective on who the Rams should take in the 1st round, how do you compare the top OTs in this draft to Jake Long? |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't think any of these guys are instant Pro Bowlers, so this is why I'd hesitate to go there with the second pick. But we'll see. |
|
| ritawharri: How does the NCAA tournament committee decide which teams go to which city? Do they decide whose going where and then rank them 1-16 or do they rank all the 1's, 2's etc and then divide them up? |
| Jeff Gordon: There is a massive process in choosing cities, something that St. Louis has had some success with in the past. And the placement of teams is whole other massive process. |
|
robert harris in California: Barron at left tackle.
I saw a brief note the other day with analysis that Barron had done a much better job at left tackle rather than right. Was there enough of difference when Alex went to the left side to believe now, he might be our guy there moving forward? Too big a risk?. I am hoping so - so we might be able to pick a true game changer (crabtree or curry) with #2. Bringing the excitement back into the stadium has to also be something that might inspire this team..Lastly, whats your reading on the players responding to the new regime? thx for your work Gordie |
| Jeff Gordon: The left tackle sample is pretty small on this guy, so I wouldn't get excited about it. He could play either side very well if he would really dedicate himself to fulfilling his huge potential. |
|
| RamFanNC: I noticed that the RAMS have no FO reps on any of the league committees. I could assume that this is simply the fact that they are all new and busy fixing the RAMS. However, I have felt that ever since Georgia moved the RAMS to St. Louis (against the leagues wishes) that there has been some prejudice against the RAMS. Something simple last year really drove this home for me - that was when we requested league approval to wear our throwback uniforms to honor Georgia. How difficult would it have been to bend the YEAR IN ADVANCE RULE to honor her? Do you and your peers or other contacts have any thoughts on this? or is discussing this taboo? |
Jeff Gordon: I'm on record as noting that the NFL has dissed the Rams at every turn. Tagliabue didn't want St. Louis to get an expansion team and Goodell was his point man in that process.
That said, to get representation on the committees, the owners have to stick around a while and get involved. This ownership group won't be around long enough for that.
|
|
| Bill Schmidt: Why did the Cardinals let Aaron Miles get away, and then release Kennedy. Miles was a good hitter, and utility man, who hustled and seemed to be a team player? |
| Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak hoped to keep Kennedy and make him earn his $4 million, but the manager wasn't interested in that. |
|
| Marco: Who would you like to see the Blues acquire via trade or free agency in the off season? |
| Jeff Gordon: A second goaltender would be nice -- maybe a guy like Halak in Montreal. Other than that, just getting back the injured guys will make the team better. |
|
Todd from Michigan: Hi Gordo and thanks for your time.
Gordo any news on Rams interst on Kassim Osgood. Big tall receiver Rams are looking for and special teams ace. |
| Jeff Gordon: I would check with the Rams' blog for updates on that. |
|
Desean Jackson: why didnt the rams take me in the 2nd if they wanted a wide reciever?
the rams didnt think i was the best of the pack? |
| Jeff Gordon: There were very specific reasons why Jackson wasn't picked -- person issues more than skill issues. |
|
Glenn: Gordo:
If healthy, I like Perez starting the year with Motte in St. Louis and send McClellan to AAA to work things out and get starters innings. I like Boggs in relief more than McClellan based on his college career. Do you agree?
Thompson as the long guy is ok. I like Walters there also because he is a big change from the power arms in the pen. Is he better off at AAA than as the long guy in STL |
| Jeff Gordon: McClellan was awesome last year until he got worn out. I like him in the set up role when he can command his pitches. |
|
Griff21: Hey gordo
whats your take on the wbc? I think its a waste of time and is just pointless. it keeps players away from their teams, major risk for injury and theres always the dreaded visa problems. |
| Jeff Gordon: Agreed totally! |
|
Glenn: Two weeks to go who of the three makes the team:
Rasmus/Mather/Freese
I see T Greene at AAA to start with but he and Jay both have looked like they will be MLB players soon. Any chance T Greene makes it now?
Heard any trade rumors involving the Cardinals? Duncan or Shumacher |
Jeff Gordon: Greene, no. But . . . if Khalil goes down, Tyler might take over.
Rasmus should make the team. Then it comes down to the Mather/Freese battle. |
|
| Butch Egan: Gordo- I applaud the job Andy Murray and the coaching staff have done thus far and all should be complimented for keeping the team focused and playing well through all the injuries and adversity. It seems that after 70 games, the coaches should have a better feel for pairing lines and special teams units. I realize injuries and certain roster changes mandate flexibility, but it seams that every night each line has multiple changes, and power play units are unable to fully gel, which I think, creates uncertainty and inconsistency. Would you agree? |
Jeff Gordon: Butchie!
Most NHL coaches play the line shuffle game. And with so many kids -- who tend to be up and down -- some of that makes sense. But I agree that the Blues will be better when the team can at least identify some two-man center/wing combos to build more 5-on-5 chemistry.
This team won't make the playoffs until it gets better 5-on-5. |
|
| Griff21: disappointed to see Greene get sent down. I didn't really think he had a shot when ST started but he played as well defensively as anybody on the team, Imho. I thought he would was either going to make the bench or be the last cut. |
Jeff Gordon: He needs to play SS every day, get 400 ABs at Memphis and make a case for everyday play next season.
He has skill -- that is why he went so high in the draft. |
|
| Rampage2K: Who is a better OT in your opinion, J.Smith or Monroe? |
| Jeff Gordon: Smith has more pure upside, Monroe is more polished. |
|
| Rampage2K: who should the Rams pick at #2? |
| Jeff Gordon: Aaron Curry |
|
| Griff21: Can you tell us some about the kid gregson we sent to SD. how did he project in our organization? |
Jeff Gordon: He wasn't one of real elite prospects. He had been a reliever of the year earlier on and saved some games in Springfield last year, but he wasn't on the radar screen for the immediate future.
In fairness to him, though, the Cards have few top-of-the-rotation arms and few end-of-the-game relievers. They have a lot of depth, but few power pitchers. |
|
| Griff21: Reyes has visa problems, Rincon and others before him did as well. how do these come about ? Who is responsible for the paperwork; the players , teams Government? |
| Jeff Gordon: It's a hassle for the players to deal with, but I believe some players milk this situation to get a little extra down time. |
|
| Mike: Hye Gordo thanks again for takeing questions. How will Tye Hill be this year? |
| Jeff Gordon: Better -- because he can't be worse. I believe he really did lose some confidence in addition to being hurt, but the Rams should be able to ease him back in this summer. |
|
Maggie: Jeff,
If the Cardinals are not in contention at the trading deadline, do you see them trading Ankiel and or Glaus in advance of Free Agency?
Maggie |
| Jeff Gordon: IF they out of contention -- and I think that is unlikely -- than such a deal is possible. More likely are moves to add players if the team has trouble. |
|
| illside43: I am definently not in the camp of drafting Stafford, but i was wondering if he is viewed as being as good as Matt Ryan and if he is, will clubs be more willing to trade up since this is such a copycat league? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Jets might trade up, but they like Freeman. They won't have to go all the way to No. 2 to get that done. |
|
| Panda: Frerotte is garbage, please tell me it isn't true that Devaney is planning on signing him. |
| Jeff Gordon: He was better than garbage last season in Minny, hence the the interest. |
|
| Griff21: it was reported Perez lost a good 10-20 lbs over the offseason. does his mechanics & injuries have anything to do with that. such a chance in a players body can effect power, mechanics & more |
| Jeff Gordon: Perez needed to get in better shape. Unfortunately, he also had ankle injury from the off-season and that could have been part of his spring issues. When I saw he had that bone chip, I immediately wondered if his mechanics would suffer. |
|
| Griff21: Is KT gonna play tues? I know he has looked a little worn down in some recent games, so this time off should do him wonders. |
| Jeff Gordon: He didn't practice today. The Blues will assess him Tuesday. |
|
JeffInColorado: Gordo,
What are the chances the Blues make a big splash in free-agency this off-season?
Im sure it will depend on how deep we go into the playoffs, if we make it there. And just from what I have heard before this trade deadline, it seems like the Blues want a big name D man. Yes, I know EJ is coming back. But could you imagine EJ, Pronger, Cola... We could be set for a few more years.
That would cost us though, and we would have to be sure we could re-sign Prongs next season. |
Jeff Gordon: Getting E. Johnson, Kariya and Brewer back -- plus adding Eller and Pietrangelo to camp -- will make the team better. They need a goaltender. Another mid-level scorer would be nice.
As for Pronger, I'd rather see this team get more from its investment in Jackman, McKee and Brewer than throw more big money at a D-man. Why not invest more in the offense? |
|
Jumbo J: Do you see any possible scenario that could get the Rams an additional pick in the 2nd and in the 3rd?
I would give up our late rounds to get 5 picks in the first three rounds.
Aaron Curry
Brian Robiskie, Clint Sintim
Dorell Scott and Fenuki Tupou
Pipe dreams, I know... |
| Jeff Gordon: Teams don't give up the twos and threes easily. That may be a pipe dream. |
|
| keith: Jeff, any news on the Rams being sold, or is chip in this for the long haul? |
| Jeff Gordon: He's not in it for the long haul, but selling a team in this economy is pretty tough. |
|
Rambunctious: Hi Jeff,
1) Will Pisa be wearing horns this year, or will we try and trade him?
2) Do you really believe Billy and Spags want Barron to be our LT this year? |
| Jeff Gordon: Barron is on the radar for left tackle, but he will have to earn that. As for Pisa, I'm guessing the team will look hard at upgrading there. This is a process. |
|
donnie avery: Am i the best reciever on the rams roster?
am i better than torry holt?
do the rams have THAT much faith in me?
am i the number one reciver going into this season?
do i make an impact? |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes pretty much across the board. It will be fun to watch what happens with Holt. What does he really have left? |
|
Cardinals9: Hi Gordo,
Thanks for these chats. It's great that you take the time to answer our questions.
Simple question: Do you think that the Cardinals took a big hit losing Gregorson to the Padres as a result of the K. Green trade or that they got off lucky in not losing an even better prospect? (And given Green's likely upside compared to last year, of course.)
Thanks! |
| Jeff Gordon: Not a big hit. The Cards have Motte, Perez and Kinney for late in the game. That could be the formation of the back-end of the bullpen for some time. |
|
Tom Smith: Hi Gord
Will we be holding our breath every play that Bulger gets hit this year? What are we going to do for depth at the quarterback position. Are we expecting to hang our hats on Berlin and (gulp) Otis as our saviors if Bulger can't pick himself off the turf? DO you think they will look at a free agent veteran or possibly look at taking a quarterback in the 3rd or 4th round as insurance and possibly for the future? Where do you think Chase Daniels will go?
Thanks Gord |
| Jeff Gordon: Otis is worth a look, but the team does need to add another kid with some upside. I like the mix of a No. 1, a No. 2 vet and a kid with potential. |
|
Carlos Galvan: Hello Jeff,
Realize it's a tad early... Regarding MU basketball 09/10. Anderson has built a marvelous program to date, but where is the size next year? How does he keep the Griffins and the Aldrichs off the boards? Marquette had an 11 rebound advantage yesterday WITH Lyons and Carroll participating. We keep reading about the terrific freshmen guards...but where's the beef? Is there something we don't know about next years recruiting class?
Cheers,
Carlos |
| Jeff Gordon: Ramsey, Bowers and Moore (assuming he sticks)have heft and Anderson is recruiting another big. And, yes, this team needs to have real muscle to win in the Big 12. |
|
limas sweed: how high was i on the rams draft board?
why was donnie avery the 1st reciever taken?
i know you have a very specific description on why the rams picked donnie avery? did they feel he had the best character? or the most talent? or why? |
| Jeff Gordon: Speed, character and the ability to comprehend the offense. But . . . he did have trouble performing within the offense in real games. |
|
Alex Ferrario: Hey Gordo,
Will Tkachuk be in the line-up this week, and how do you see this weeks span of games going.
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Murray just said that Keith will be evaluated again Tuesday, so we'll see. The Blues haven't had much luck with LA, so if he can play, he will. |
|
Griff21: next year PK , king will be back.
TK is Iffy
hinote is gone
Eller, Mcrae, Sonne, Palushaj could push for jobs
Realistically who will make it & what happens to guys like Crombeen, Winchester & steen? |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't see any of those kids ready to start the season with the team, so there is work for the vets you mentioned. |
|
RamFan in CAnton: Hi G.
Are the Rams favoring a QB in this years draft? If so whom and can he run? |
Jeff Gordon: I think the Rams are more interested in improving their blocking than adding a mobile QB.
That's it for this week -- see you next time! |
