Rich: Good morning Gordo,

Any word on negoiations with Freotte, Craft, not to mention getting OJ a long term deal?

Thanks for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: Atogwe's long-term deal is inevitable, since it serves both sides well. Jim Thomas has reported that Frerotte and Craft are likely moves to occur before the draft.

Rich: Good morning Gordo,

Any thoughts to who the Rams may be targetting as the QB of the future?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see the team getting the "QB of the Future" in this draft. They may take a young guy and see what happens. But it would shock everybody if the Rams used one of their top picks to fill that void. Spagnuolo is committed to building from the lines out.

#1 NEW JERSEY RAMS FAN.: WHAT'S UP GORDO! RAMS 2ND OVERALL PICK AND 4TH ROUND PICK, IN EXCHANGE FOR THE EAGLES 21ST PICK, 28TH PICK AND 53RD PICK, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?
Jeff Gordon: That doesn't excite me. Perhaps the Rams could get both an OT and a MLB later in the first round, but moving out of the No. 2 spot for THAT seems counterproductive. At No. 2, the Rams are guaranteed a high-caliber starting OT or MLB. Trading down only makes sense if you don't like what's at the top of the draft and don't want to pay second-overall money to somebody you don't love.

Zac, TN: Gordo,

Who do you see as our closer April 6th?
Jeff Gordon: Jason Motte

Bob Turner: I enjoy your Q and A program. My Q is What has happened to Mike Parisi>
Jeff Gordon: Like Jaime Garcia, he headed off for surgical repairs last summer.

BleedBlue24/7: Gordo, Have you ever seen a more talented trio of Oshie Berglund and Perron come to this franchise and make a bigger differance? And with that being said do you now think we will make the play-offs? Thanks Gordo..
Jeff Gordon: I kept dismissing this team's playoff chances, due to the brutal closing schedule, but these guys keep proving me wrong.

In my time, I haven't seen a young trio like this come along. I wasn't in St. Louis yet when the Federko/Sutter/Turnbull group came along.

DisCard: As the end of the beginning draws near, I just don't see Duncan hitting cleanup, even against right hand pitching. He certainly won't convince anyone not to walk Pujols. The lineup that works for me would have Rasmus hitting second with Ankiel and Ludwick platooning in the cleanup slot. How do you see it?
Jeff Gordon: I agree with you. Hitting clean-up is a beast. Troy Glaus didn't like doing it, for good reason. Ludwick can't do it full time, but I like him against lefties.

To me, Ankiel is the natural there. To put Duncan on the spot is unfair, since he is already forced to play out of position defensively. The combo of the two could kill his season.

John W: Jeff,

Reading the box scores, I'm amazed how well Khalil Greene has been hitting throughout spring training(.413 AVG, only 3 SOs in 63 ABs as of March 30th). I was expecting a spike in his performance given it was his walk year. But is this some kind of mirage?
Jeff Gordon: He can't hit like that in the real games. But if his bats .265 with 15 to 20 homers and 70 to 80 RBI, that would help offset the loss of Glaus.

stlcardfan78: Gordo-

In 31 spring training games the Redbirds have given up 20 runs in the ninth inning.

I know Spring Training doesn't "count", but if you've watched this baseball team this spring...its much of the same from last year so far.

Can I count on STL Dispatch to unabashedly tear JM to pieces with his lip service lying BS to the fans? I hope you make his job impossible and run him out of town. I don't root against the home team...but JM is not the answer...he's a mainstay of the problem.
Jeff Gordon: It's a little soon to write off the GM, especially when the youth movement has produced spectacular progress at every level of the organization.

As these kids hit the big leagues one after another, fans will find it increasingly difficult to crush Mozeliak.

When it became obvious the team needed another lefty reliever, he went out and got one. If another need arises, he'll have to address it. If he doesn't address it, then he'll have to answer for it should the Cards struggle.

Donnie: Thanks for taking my questions. Two things:
1) With the Blues pushing for the playoffs (which I believe they will make), what are your thoughts about Keith Tkachuk returning to the Blues next year. Do you think he will? Does he want to?
2) Same questions about Dan Hinote.
Thank Jeff & Go Blues!
Jeff Gordon: Hinote is doing a fine job, but it would be tough to pay a premium for a part-time fourth liner when so many young players are making progress. Guys like Crombeen and Winchester need to stay and play. Kariya will return next season and fit somewhere on one of the top three lines. King will return to add a heavyweight fighter.

Tkachuk would be a good guy to bring back, on the other hand. He can still help the power play as a front-of-the-net guy and he has been willing to play a secondary role at even strength. His leadership can't be underestimated. This team has a good vibe about it. It can't keep everybody

tlwilborn: Greeting Oh Great One:

Hope you've enjoyed your spring in the sun. Yep, time to get rolling. Which means these questions? If a Cardinals starter falters badly, who's next in the rotation? And if Skip, who I wholly admire, just can't do it at Second, would you think an outfielder for Martin Prado with the Braves would be a good trade, even though Prado is a reserve? Lastly, who is your pick for winning the Central Division?

Thanks for sharing with us,
Thom
Jeff Gordon: The Cubs are still the team to beat, although I wonder about their defense and their closer (Gregg). Chicago has an awesome offense and the Cards still have a lot of prove, especially with Glaus likely to miss significant time.

Walters has made a case to be the No. 6 starter. He hung around the longest of the bunch and he keeps posting big numbers with his off-speed stuff. Hawksworth has also helped himself. None of the five Memphis starters are destined for top-of-the-rotation work, but any of the five (including Boggs, Todd or Mortensen) could be OK as a fill-in. Any of those guys could help in long relief should Brad Thompson move up to the rotation as a fill in.

Pixelhead: The Cardinals had a pretty decent spring up to this last week, what happened? Was it because the pitchers were facing for the most part the opposing team's starting day squads vs early in the spring they were facing lots of rookies and others wanting to make the team?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: The big runs against numbers are worrisome, for sure. Wellemeyer needs to get people out. Ditto for McClellan. These guys are saying they feel fine, but the Cards need them to duplicate their '08 seasons.

Some of the struggle occurs because pitchers work on pitches, versus working batter to batter to get out of innings. They will stick with bad stuff longer because they want to fix it in the spring, when the games don't count.

Tackleberry: If the Rams don't go with Curry with the second overall pick, where does that leave the Rams with their linebackers? Going into the off-season this is one of the positions that seemed to be in most need of an upgrade. The idea of moving Draft inside to replace Witherspoon sort of reminds me of every bad move they made at that position since the Marmie Era. If draft was that good he should have been playing a lot more already.
Jeff Gordon: Draft would not excite me inside. We all like Will outside, but that move tells you the team MUST get a strong point-of-attack MLB. This is especially critical given the lack of dominant DTs to wreck the opposing ground game.

redbirdswin: Freese has proven he can hit in the limited AB's he's gotten this spring. Mather has struggled at the plate, though he's gotten some hits in these past couple games. Freese is a good defender (if he's fully healthy) but Mather has shown he can handle the hot corner as well, AND Mather can play the OF if need be. So, who do you think will be the 3B come Opening Day? Also - is there a chance both could make the roster and someone like Brendan Ryan could be left off?
Jeff Gordon: I'd be a little surprised if Ryan got left off, since he is versatile and somewhat proven as a big league hitter -- compared to Thurston and Barden.

I don't see Mather making the team unless he is hitting. There is no point to putting him in a part-time role if he is getting poor at bats. Since him to Memphis and let him work it out there. Keep somebody who is getting good ABs in the utility role instead.

I see Freese as the starting 3B, unless his Achilles injury is an issue. He is a solid fielder who has hit everywhere he has been. He ought to be able to hold his own in a secondary offensive role while solidifying the infield defense. If Freese holds up physically during the final week, he will do enough to win the job.

Brian: Gordo,

What do you think the chances are that the Rams will draft Curry 1st then get a OT in the 2nd. I feel the drop off of the top three Linebackers is much greater then the drop of the top three tackles, much greater depth with the tackles.

Thanks,
Brian
Jeff Gordon: I would agree. The thought of putting Curry in the middle of that defense for years to come is very appealing. Spagnuolo is committed to moving Witherspoon outside, where he can do so much more damage.

However,Spagnuolo believes in building from the lines out, however, so there we can't dismiss the possibility of starting at tackle.

ballhawk32: Gordo:
Your the Rams GM and your on the clock right now. Who are you making Rams with our first two picks? Obviously, the second round pick depends on a lot of variables, but give me your best prognosis.
Thanks
Ray
Jeff Gordon: How about Curry No. 1 and OT Jamon Meredith No. 2.

HEG: Gordo Mizzou had a great year in basketball more than anyone expected; but I feel Saturday's game with Uconn the seniors let the team down. Re; the Ram's I still feel they need to use the #2 pick for an impact player at the skilled positions; also if they could move Bulger which would be difficult with his contract maybe they could get a free agent like Cutler; Re; the Cardinals it seems the starting pitchers are faultering near the end of spring training, hopefully it is just dead arm syndrome at this point in spring- the Cardinals like most teams will only go as far as their pitching takes them. Agree or disagree with these statements?
Jeff Gordon: If the Tigers hit a couple more threes, they advance to the Final Four. So I had no problem with that performance against a superior UConn team.

Cutler isn't a free agent and I don't see anybody trading for Bulger.

Starting pitching is crucial for the Cards. They will need to have four of their veterans going at the same time to contend.

billyh072883: If the Skip experiment fails, like many think it will, do you think the Cards will swoop up an experienced 2nd baseman? Before the season people were throwing around the Grudz as a possible candidate since he is a free agent in KC. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Grudzielanek is out of work for a reason. If Schumaker falls apart, the Cards will have look inside (Ryan or Thurston) or finally look to move an OF for an infielder. Right now, however, there is no reason to ponder such a deal.

billyh072883: What can St. Louis fans expect to happen next year with the Pujols contract? I am worried that a NY or Boston will come along and steal him from us if the Cards dont compete this year. I propose that St. Louis fans all donate $20.00 to the help Albert stay in St. Louis fund and then we can guarantee he wont go anywhere. Any thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards control him through 2011, but, yes, next year would be the time to extend. This franchise can afford to make him its first $20 million player, even in tough times. Baseball will take a big economic hit the next two years, so from that standpoint keeping Albert may be easier than most of us assumed. This franchise will be healthier than most.

LARamFan61: Is there any chance that the Rams can trade down to 5 and then again to 9-11. Oher should still be there and they could pick up additional early round picks

thanks
Jeff Gordon: But which teams want the No. 2 pick and why? I don't know that there are the sort of players at the top of this draft to create that possibility. There are lots of OTs and there are mixed opinions about the QBs.

Jerry from Memphis: It sounds like the Cards are down to two roster spots to settle this week. Which 5 right handers will be in our opening day bullpen? What happens to the odd man out? (Are all three eligible to start the season in Memphis?)

Also, I am assuming that Rasmus and Mather will open as the 4th and 5th outfielders. If so then one of the back up infielders has to go. Which one do you believe it will be?
Jeff Gordon: Mather needs a big final week to make the team. Otherwise, the team could keep an extra infielder since Thurston can play well in the outfielder and Ryan can survive out there. Also, Skip will switch to the OF quite a bit in the late innings.

Ryan is the best shortstop of the extra infielders. Barden is the best 3B of the bunch. Thurston's best spot is second, which could help him.

Perez will need a huge week to make the team, given his missed time. He could start at Memphis and close there while Motte closes here. Then he could come up as needed. That would buy Thompson time as the long guy.

Or . . . if McClellan keeps giving up runs, he could go back and straighten himself out in Memphis, then come back when he is ready.

Glenn: Gordo:

I will assume Freese is the starting 3B. The bench would appear to be LaRue, Ryan, Rasmus, and two of the following: Thurston/Barden/Mather. Mather and Thurston are my picks although Barden has outplayed Mather. I guess the question is who do you want to start verus tough left handed pitching. Mather gives more options as far as an OF with sock for Duncan/Rasmus/Ankiel.
The bull pen comes down to 2 of the following 3 making it: Perez/McClellan/Thompson. Thompson appears to have the edge since he is a long guy. I like Perez with McClellan getting starters innings at Memphis. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I just covered most of that. I like Mather's power off the bench and his ability to draw the odd start against lefties. But he has to hit. Sticking him in a part-time role here after a bad offensive spring is asking for trouble.

He needs to continue his upward progression.

Glenn: Gordo:

Rams draft needs are many thus go with best player on board philosophy rounds 1-5. I say Curry/Crabtree with first round pick. Likely can get a good tackle with second round pick or perhaps a good WR. In any event it looks like OT/LB/WR are the three biggest needs now. I would like to see a good RB added als. In the event we do not take Curry in round one is there good depth at LB for us to get a good player at LB in round 2? WR and OT appear to be deep I do not know about LB
Jeff Gordon: The LB depth is iffy. If the Rams go tackle first, I'd like to see them trade up a bit with that second pick to make sure.

Derek DeCounter: Hey Gordo...

If the Blues make the playoffs, or come just shy of doing it, will Andy Murray be a shoe-in for the Jack Adams?
Jeff Gordon: Hitchcock was looking like a good choice until this weekend. If the Note climbs from 15th to No. 7 or No. 8, that would be a heck of an accomplishment.

Glenn: Gordo:

Andy Murray has done a fantastic job with this team. What do the Blues have to do in the next four road games to make the playoffs a good possibility?

Next year we get Kariya and Johnson back plus what rookies do you see making a contribution? Petro? Cole?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues just have to do what they have been doing. They are getting great goaltending and they are forcing the action every shift. The kids are coming through with the offense and the makeshift D is holding up OK.

The next two games against powerful offenses will be tough, but both Chicago and Detroit have taken somes losses of late. Vancouver and Columbus were hotter and the Blues beat them.

Next year the Blues add Brewer, Johnson and Kariya. Pietrangelo may need AHL time, as might Eller. Cole must decide to come out of college. If he does, he could move past Pietrangelo and bid for a job.

Mike Anderson: Gordo:

What big time players are still available for me to recruit for next years roster? Please let Kentucky know I am not interested!!!
Jeff Gordon: Mike, you need to lock down that JUCO big man you are chasing.

Ram_Malavasi: Gordo: Any chance the Rams take a run at Amani Toomer to add to the WR corps for this season? If not him, do you have any insight on who (or whether) they will target as a vet WR presence in free-agency? And do they plan on drafting a big WR in the early rounds in the draft?
Jeff Gordon: Spags has some insight on him, obviously, so it's a thought. I'd rather see this team add one more WR with some growth potential, but such a veteran may not exist.

Dan: Are there any figures available regarding the success rate of Tommy John surgery?
Jeff Gordon: There may be, but I only know this: Most guys make it back fine and many are stronger than before. It is the one arm/shoulder procedure that is usually not a big deal. The shoulder stuff, by comparison, does NOT turn back the clock for most pitchers. It only buys them additional time.

Dusty Baker: Gordo:

Do you think the Reds starting pitching is one of the better staffs in the NL? Why did they build this park (Great American)like a softball field?
Jeff Gordon: Lot of great arms there. Too bad that park could kill them. I'm glad the Cards didn't go that rout. This is the National League. Pitching should count for something.

Marc Bulger: Gordo:

Ff they block I am an above average QB. If they do not block I am one of the worst QB's in the league. Are they going to block???
Jeff Gordon: The line is still under construction, so it is too soon to tell.

murrowboy2: gordo.....the blues are creating a dynamite team......and at the Scottrade it is so entertaining to feel the vibrations, enthusiasms, and pleasures of the crowd. it's gotten to the point where you can just have fun being a part of the audience, regardless of the standings.

question: in what area of the game do the blues need the most help to build for further success? defense? offense? or do you think that with the expected return of this year's season-long injured it will be enough?
Jeff Gordon: Right now their "D" is the soft spot, but Brewer, Johnson, Pietrangelo and Cole could fix that in a hurry. Add a solid back-up GT for next year, get Kariya back to 70-point form and you could have a powerhouse. Just imagine what progress Berglund, Oshie and Perron will make.

murrowboy2: gordo.....amazing season....it's great fun to be a part of that Scottrade audience, feeling the enthusiasm radiating from the players and spectators. Playoffs or no, the blues are building a very strong future.

questions: do you expect the blues to be active in the trade market after this season.......where do you see the most need for change .... or will the return of this season's injured do the trick? By the way, how's johnson's recovery coming? thanks a lot.
Jeff Gordon: Johnson seems to be fine. He will have all summer to get his wheels back. He will make a huge difference next year.

Davidson talked about trading some kids/picks for veteran help next year, but the stellar play of all the kids down the stretch should change that view. Perron, in particular, has stepped it up.

kingoftruth: as of right now, what % chance do you think Mike Anderson will be coaching at Mizzou next season?
Jeff Gordon: Given the offer Mizzou has put together, I'd put it at 80 percent. He is looking at a salary bump of $450,000 per year, plus incentives.

Tackleberry: Do you see a situation where the Cards would pursue Dontrelle Willis? I realize that it would have to be a scenario where Detroit eats a good bit of his contract, but not having a single lefty in our rotation is a bit concerning, especially when you consider that the Cards themselves have often been stifled by good left-handed pitching. It would be nice to return the favor and if anyone could help this kid out wouldn't Duncan be a pretty qualified candidiate?
Jeff Gordon: He may not pitch again in the majors. He is that messed up -- almost Ankiel-like.

Scott B: How Jeff, how are a below .500 road Blues team, going to play .600 in their final 5 road games. That's assuming the Blues win at home. I love watching this team play, help make me a believer so the guys at work will stopp calling me a hater. Untill Nashville actually loses a game, i dont see the Note making it in.
Jeff Gordon: I was in your camp until this weekend. That victory at Columbus really changed the scenario. Now this team has tremendous momentum.

Brian: I can't tell you how exciting it is for the Blues to actually have young home grown players that are going to be stars. I have been so jealous of other teams that have been able to do this in years past. Kudos to the management staff for the choosing and development of these players.

If you had to give credit to someone for this, who would it be?
Jeff Gordon: John Davidson, working at the top, has let the hockey guys do their job. He has stayed the course, piling up draft picks and letting the scouts make their scores. Every single member of the hockey operation deserves credit -- including Murray, who is getting a LOT from the kids on hand.

Hershel Davis: who are the incoming recruiting class Missouri has comming in for next basketball season?
Jeff Gordon: The have lined up a pure point guard, Michael Dixon, and 6-10 high school forward Keith Dewitt from North Carolina. Both are three-star guys. Out on the message boards, though, there is concern about Dewitt qualifying academically.

JUCO center Jarrid Famous would be an instant impact guy, as Ramsey was. That is the key to the recruiting class. If Anderson gets him, look out.

schurch1984: Jeff I don't understand the Rams' are determined to bring in Gus Frerrotte as the backup QB. I've read here that this is defended by the fact that he went 8-2 as a starter for the Vikings this past year, but looking more closely at it the guy had a rating of 73.7 with 12 TDs and 15 INTs. That was with maybe the best rushing offense in the NFL behind him. Honestly, how can anyone look at those numbers and think that this guy should be brought back? I pacifically remember a game in which he started for us against the Seahawks in 07, we had a real chance to win that game at the end, and the man fumbled the snap at what, the 2 yard line to blow the game? This man has proven that he is not a worthy starter in the NFL, not just late in his career but at all points, and honestly, I'd rather have Trent Green back because Trent Green being 40% of what he used to be is better than Gus Frerrotte at any point in his career. You put Trent Green in Minnesota this past season and I promise he would have had better numbers then Gus did.
Jeff Gordon: Green didn't show much last year. And with the Rams dedicated to the run this year, and a careful play-action passing game, Gus isn't as terrible fit as back-up.

Rob: 1. What do you think of the second wave of OT? Anyone the Rams like?

2. Many have asked about trading down but I’m starting to think about trading up for one of my favorites Eben Britton. With our 2nd and 3rd we could according to the trade chart get up pretty high around 20-21 and with the 2nd and 4th to around 27-28. Britton was a team leader, smart, great character, though run blocker and good in pass pro, great size at 6´6 310 and some have said he could be in the top 5-10 if he had stayed another year. I know we have many holes but if we could find 2 solid starters with Curry and Britton at RT don´t you think it could be worth it, especially if we could get away with just trading away our 4th?
Thx Rob
Jeff Gordon: Don't know which of the later guys they like -- only that there are lots of them. With Barron and Goldberg back at OT, and with Bell able to swing over there, the team doesn't HAVE to go OT with the first pick.

yaderrty06: Like it or not, this team is built to contend! Do you think the Rams will fullfil their WR need in the 1st or 2nd round? A MLB (Aaron Curry) 1st round and a solid WR (Hakeem Nicks) 2nd round could be a huge boost to push this team around like the Dolphins did last year don't you think? Can't we manage with the Line that we have now? Barron played his best at LT anyways! And we could always get an OL in the 3rd round.
Jeff Gordon: Goldberg's return bolstered the line, but I still see the Rams needed an impact OT somewhere in the first few rounds.

yaderrty06: Have you heard anything of us signing any of the Veteran WR left on the market?
Jeff Gordon: Not much noise on that front. Most of the focus is on the draft. The Rams may not make another move at that spot until rosters start shaking out elsewhere in the league.

It's not like we're going to see a lot of three- and four-WR looks from this team this year.

Adam: Do you think Mike Anderson will be back at Mizzou next year or do you think he'll go to another job? A lot of people are saying that he is near the top of Georgia's list and that they are going to throw a lot of money at their new coach. What do you think are the chances he stays? Mizzou basketball is fun to watch and I hope he stays.
Jeff Gordon: Some folks I respect are certain he'll stay, now that Mizzou is willing to play $1.3 million per year, plus incentives, plus assistant coach salary boosts. That is a very competitive offer.

Mike: If the Lions take Jason Smith with the #1 poverall pick, who do the Rams take? Do they take Curry since the drop off of talent with the next tackle is less? I do not see a problem using the #2 pick on a middle linebacker who will man the position for years to come. I appreciate your thoughts
Jeff Gordon: I'm with you on this one. Even if the Lions go QB first, I'd take Curry. The Rams, however, might jump at the OT with big athletic upside if he falls to No. 2.

Matt: With the Rams second pick. Why not a London Fletcher type linebacker in Aarron Curry? Rams have not had the "Eye of the Tiger" in that position in a while.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, it has been a hole in the D. Witherspoon played pretty well there, but he isn't a force in the middle. His skills are more well-rounded and better suited to outside work.

Stumped Mitchell: Any chance on Crabtree? They call him another Fitzgerald. That seemed to work out pretty good for the Cards. We are so bad why not take the best playmaker and hope we hit with Beatty in the second?

Everbody knows the bird is the word.
Jeff Gordon: As much as the Rams like Crabtree, the team's inability to land significant free-agent help at either linebacker or OT should steer them in one of those directions.

Ray Ray: Gordo,

Love how many ?s you answer on this thing. If the Note can stay in the 8th spot, how does this team match up against the Sharks? I am in DC these days and I have only seen the Sharks play once all year. Go Blues!

Thanks-
Jeff Gordon: San Jose is a powerhouse, but I like the Blues against them more than against the Red Wings. Detroit has skill on all four lines and the Blues can't seem to contain that team. With hot goaltending, an effective power play and tenacious checking, all things are possible - even an upset of the Sharks, if the Blues get that far.

After watching them play this weekend, I can no longer doubt this team.

virginiatom: I have looked at the Rams draft projections and initially I was thinking that the Rams need an offensive tackle or an impact player worthy of the #2 overall pick. But the more you think about it, franchises that win championships generally start at the quarterback play. The quarterback is the franchise and if you don't have one you won't win (the 2000 Ravens an exception). The Rams probably don't have that person in Bulger. With an opportunity to grab a franchise quarterback like Stafford or Sanchez, why wouldn't the Rams set themselves up for the future and do it now rather than drafting a mid-round medicore quarterback that they need to try and develop? Very few (I know there are exceptions) mid level drafted quarterbacks win championships.
Jeff Gordon: And a lot of top QB picks wash out. There are too many bedrock needs here to take a flyer on an expensive QB. If the Rams decide Bulger is NOT the guy, and that could happen, then the team will revisit this position next year.

Don Muenz: Good morning, Jeff.
Assuming the Rams take tackle or linebacker in their first two picks, is there a wide receiver available via free agency or in the third round to flesh out our inexperienced receiving corps?
Thank you.

don in columbus
Jeff Gordon: At this point, the middle of the draft looks more promising than free agency at the WR position.

Flotrain: Gotta tell ya, walking around different part of KC yesterday, it was awesome to see SO many people wearing MU gear. Even after the loss, it felt like a source of pride to wear your Tiger stuff... Which, even in Quin's Elite Eight year, you never saw. Like most people KNEW something wasn't right about the whole thing....
Does Alabama hiring Grant take some pressure off this whole deal? Would CMA honestly be a candidate for Kentucky, UVA or other "high profile" programs?... I've thought and said this before during mid-conference season, but especially now after that great run they had, how much would that hurt progress/momentum IF he does decide to leave?.... THEN, who do you get?... after learing this system for so long, remaining players/recruits learn and step into a NEW system! Ugh, hurts just thinking about it....
Jeff Gordon: Losing Anderson would be tough, since the next coach would certainly NOT play this way. But I expect him to stay now that going home isn't an option. Anderson is set up pretty well here. And I don't seem as a strong candidate for one of the perennial Top 20 jobs like Kentucky.

After what those folks did to Tubby, I can't imagine Anderson giving it a thought.

Mike: Hey Gordo,

Ive noticed Wainright has been a little shaky. IM just wondering if you think he'll be ready by the star of the season?
Jeff Gordon: He's healthy, so that's all that matters. Wellemyer and McClellan are the guys to worry about right now.

Michael B: It appears Colby Rasmus may not be ready for the majors. What are his chances of making the club? If he doesent, who stays?
Jeff Gordon: With Mather struggling, I see Rasmus as one of the top four outfielders. He's had a few hiccups in the field, but he is a real talent out there. Duncan is likely to switch out of games he starts, so Rasmus break in the way Schumaker broke in.

Colby is hitting .282 this spring with four steals and a .378 on-base percentage. Not bad. The Cardinals have an outfield crowd at Memphis, so there is no reason to send him back there.

virginiatom: Spagnuolo's comments on Carriker in the post were less than a ringing endorsement for a player drafted so high and which so much was expected. If so,I get sick when I think of the number 1 failures we have had the past several drafts - Chris Long, good, but not great for a #2 pick. Ty Hill, Carriker, Barron. All huge disappointments so far. Its no wonder our team is so bad. So many high draft picks and so many wasted opportunities that take up cap space and tie your hands because you keep these players in positions hoping they can play because of their high draft status. Do you think any of these players will turn it around and play worthy of their draft status?
Jeff Gordon: Spags also referenced Carriker's health, which was not good last year. He played with bum shoulders. If he stays healthy and gets strong again, he should at least be a solid contributor. Maybe not a difference maker, but a sturdy guy with versatility.

This is the make-or-break year for Hill. He is surrounded by good people, so that will limit his exposure.

Barron is also in his make-or-break year. He'll stay in the league a while because of his athletic ability, but this year will determine whether he will be a big-money guy.

Ineeda Hammer: Torry visits Jax... Doesn't it seem like his main goal is to find a "job" close to his NC home ? Jax is certainly not heading to the Super Bowl next yr. I'm sure he just wants to get a "job" with the Panthers so he can be "HOME"... winning doesn't seem to be his goal. He's just looking for a paycheck.

Did we see this with Torry last yr? I feel that he may have showed his true self with his actions last yr... Why else would he not be interested in re-doing his contract to stay with the Rams... Don't you feel that he's just looking for a place close to home were he can collect a few more NFL paychecks while he prepares to retire? Jax - COME ON
Jeff Gordon: At this point, he just wants to stay in the league and get paid decent coin. I don't see where he has the leverage to pick between a contender and a Sun Belt team. He needs to go where somebody will pay him.

marpdagn: Hey, Gordo. With Glaus' return pushed back a bit by his lack of desired progress with the shoulder, what's gonna happen on May 30 when he is ready to return and Freese is hitting .300 with 8 HRs? I know the "fiscally conscious" FO is gonna be all for dumping Glaus and his 12 mil, but will there be any takers out there?
Jeff Gordon: At some point, the Cards will put one of their many 3B prospects (Freese, Mather, Craig, Wallace) at the hot corner. Will that be this year? If Glaus goes into Mark Mulder mode, Freese will get every opportunity to prove he is the guy.

If it comes to it, the Cards could move Glaus as a rental player and get prospects back. But he could also come back, finish out the year and give the Cards a bit more power as they try to get back to the playoffs.

virginiatom: The Rams have not used a high number 1 draft pick on an impact offensive player since Torry Holt in 1999. Steven Jackson was a number 1 but was passed over and was lucky to fall into the Rams lap where he did. Perhaps the reason that the greatest show on turf has failed is because of this lack of drafted impact players on offense. So maybe a Crabtree wouldn't be such a bad pick with the #2 position afterall. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I like Crabtree, but Spags wants to build power first, then go for finesse.

Jayman: Hows it.

Just wandering what you thought of the NFL plans to expand to 18 games? I thinks its long overdue, but taking away preseason games...how will teams evaluate talent and make decisions on players that are on the bubble....?
Jeff Gordon: Preseason games are currently a joke. Coaches refuse to use real players for more than a few series in a couple of the games. So, sure, get rid of them.

But I would expect a roster expansion to come with that, because injuries would obvious become an even bigger issue. Teams need more flexibility to rest injured players on the active roster. So the active roster should increase.

VCR: HELLO GORDO;

What have you heard regarding the 2nd rd OT's projected to go in the top of rd 2??? Is there any LT's available at pick #35ish???

Do you think the Rams #2 rb is currently on the roster, and if not how do you forsee them getting a better back up for this soon to be power running team

Why does Kevin Demoff report the "football" reports to Chip vs. Billy D reporting the "football" report??? Lots of rams fans wonder about this!!!
Jeff Gordon: We've touched on the OT issue.

I do see the team upgrading at second RB one way or another. It's early. Darby, Pittman and Leonard -- that is not exciting.

The current chain of command makes sense. Demoff is running the business at Rams Park, as Shaw was supposed to. He signs off on the financial stuff, so it only make sense that he stands between the football guy and the owner.

VCR: HELLO GORDO;

How many DE's and DT's do you see us taking in the draft at each spot???

Why does Kevin Demoff report the "football" reports to Chip vs. Billy D reporting the "football" report??? Lots of rams fans wonder about this!!!
Jeff Gordon: I see the Rams adding at least one DE and one DT. Depth is lacking both places.

chicagoblues: Jeff, one week later, do you change your stance and say the Blues make the playoffs?

What do you think Oshie's ceiling is (future)? 75/80 point guy? 90 point guy?

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, after this week, I am drinking the Kool Aid. I did not see this team beating Columbus twice. There is still a hard road left, but those two victories showed all things are possible.

There aren't many 90-point NHL guys. I see Oshie as a steady 80-point guy, with a few big years mixed in. He is a Roenick-type.

VCR: HELLO GORDO;

Does Kevin have any veto power that can trump Billy on the football side of the business. Being a cap guy does his budget over see (power-wise) Billy's decision power???
Jeff Gordon: In theory, the money guys holds veto power because he has to sign (or not sign) players. It's Chip's job to make sure that the money guy doesn't overstep his boundaries. The only reason the money guy should step on the football guy is on money issues -- the budget and the cap. There is a fine line there, because all decisions are part football decisions and part business decisions.

Bottom line, everybody has to work toward consensus.

dougstl: Jeff,
What do you think about Jackman's performance this year? He is matched up with the best from the opponents most of the time...but, I cringe everytime he is out on the ice. Also, with the way the kids are playing this year, it sure would have been nice to see EJ manning the point on the power play as well. Oh well, hopefully next year!

Thanks.
DJB
Jeff Gordon: Next year Jackman will play a more realistic role. He is not cut out to play against top lines every night. He is just not that good on the puck. But give him credit for working his tail off during this late rush toward the playoffs. He and McKee have picked up their play.

mbswyers1: Whats up Gordo? With the way the standings are setting up it looks like the Note will have to go a minimun 3-2-1 for 7 points. Do you think thats enough to get it done? That would give us the 90 pts that we all thought we would need to get it done.
Jeff Gordon: It sure looks better, but the Blues must take advantage of Chicago's recent struggles and win there.

Trouble is, all these three-point games elsewhere make it tougher to build a margin.

Paul H: Jeff,

Thanks for the chat! Who do you think the back-up middle infielder(s) will be on the Cardinals' opening day roster?
Jeff Gordon: Touched on this earlier. IF Freese starts at third and IF Mather doesn't hit, the team could keep an extra infielder and four outfielders, since the front four would get all the ABs and the extra infielder (Thurston?)can also play well in the OF.

Steve: Thanks for taking my question, do you really think we should bring back Gus?? Shouldn't we train a new backup instead? (NOT BERLIN!)
Also, which throwbacks are we using this year? I hope it's the Blue & White!!
Thanks!!!!
Jeff Gordon: I assume the throwbacks are going all the way back.

Ultimately, the team will develop another QB. Right now, they are just looking for a stand-in.

chicagoblues: Kariya has said he will be back if we/Blues make the playoffs. But wouldn't he need to get a least a few games in before throwing him right in the mix of a high tempo, physical playoff game?

Would he go to Peoria or if it looks like we're going to make the playoffs with two games left, do we throw him the last few?
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't be in any rush to Kariya in with all that rust. The team is playing very well with the current mix.

Andrew Fuchs: Gordo,
The Blues are playing the greatest hockey I have ever seen in this town. TJ Oshie is the most exciting player on the ice and Backes has been a great leader and playmaker on the ice. I wondering if you are with me in saying that within the next 3 years Backes and Oshie will have the C and A respectively? And do you believe that they will finish their careers here in St. Louis?
Jeff Gordon: Backes and Oshie are great long-term captain candidates. Both play with such heart. The future is bright. And don't leave Perron out of that discussion.

redneckburd72: Heellllllooooo Gordo,
I'm happy top see Freese getting a crack at the major league roster and quieting some of the discord for our embattled GM.This makes the WHOLE Rolen situation slip away without significant sting, which leaves me to ask.....how has he looked? The stats only say so much,it really seems that the Edmonds trade was much better than anticipated. What is your take on the defense in general? Also had to throw this in,is Matt Pagnozzi son of the former Card?? If so exciting to hear about his defensive prowess.Any information on the Perez front,if set to start the season at AAA who could get the keys in the meantime.Thank You for your time.....Bring on the SCRUBS!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Matt is the nephew, not the son, of Pags. Great glove, great handler of pitchers, no bat, but he could be a big league back-up.

If Perez opens at Memphis, Motte is the primarily closer here. A great spring for him.

Freese has a very good glove, which is why he will be fine filling in. Great trade!

b dunn: rumor has it that the Tigers are getting a 5yr contract together to offer coach Anderson...any truth to this?

i've already heard his name mentioned in regards to the kentucky and/or arizona opening.
Jeff Gordon: I believe he will get a 5-year offer. As for Arizona and Kentucky, not sure those are great fits for him. He hasn't recruited at that level.

Joel Koch: Gordo, thanks for taking my question. I was reading Ken Rosenthal's award picks for the 2009 season, and I found something interesting. He predicts Roy Halladay will win the AL Cy Young, but he wonders if Halladay will be in the AL all season.

As bad as the Blue Jays are, do you think Mozeliak might try to land the prized right-hander? And do you think it is possible to talk Ricchardi into taking Piniero (just for the sake of moving him), Clay Mortenson, Jon Jay, P.J. Walters, Adam Riefer, Pete Kozma, and possibly Bryan Anderson? It might be a lot, but having Halladay, Wainwright, and Carp at the front of our rotation for the rest of 2009 and all of 2010 would be sick.

Is that possible, or am I just deluded?
Jeff Gordon: Anything is possible, but the Cards need to save their dollars for Albert. And with the money owed Carpenter, Lohse and Wainwright, that would be too much to throw at starting pitching.

Buzz: Gordo,
How would you rate Billy Devaney in the following categories:
1) Overall ability as a GM.
2) Ability to evaluate players and construct a contending roster.
3) People skills.
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: His people skills are great. I think he is a solid personnel guy, based on what he did last year filling holes. Now let's see how good he is at building a consensus between the scouts, the coach and the money guy. That is a real leadership skill.

I believe he has it, because is not an ego guy. But we'll see.

itdsntmttr: what is the story with third base? Looks like Freese is hitting a little better, but why was Allen Craig not even considered? He is a third baseman right, he was killing the ball in spring training and not even givin a look at third, Is he going to be another life long minor leaguer, or are they going to try him at another position or trade him, your thoughts.
Jeff Gordon: Great point about Craig. All he does is hit. His glove isn't as good as Freese's, so the team looked at him as a 1B/outfielder type. He may have a tough time finding his spot as a result.

But he can hit.

bjwstl: Hey Gordo,
I know its spring training, but should we start to be worried about the Cards recent losses. I thought the end of spring training was when the games mattered more. Do the players just feel they're ready to go, which means they dont try as hard? Or could the extra week of spring be a factor. Also it seems Skip has finally settled down into 2nd base. Is he looking better since Jose is back? Thanks again
Jeff Gordon: I always worry when I see pitchers give up big run totals. They are still working on stuff, yes, but it is still unsettling.

stlcardfan78: Could you check with Johnny Mo the next time you see him and ask him if he has confused his low lying fruit plan for a struggle to contend for 4th place in the NL Central plan?
Jeff Gordon: He feels great about the team. We'll when the real games start, but he likes the 5-man rotation, the 4-man outfield, the power pitching for the end of games . . . other than Glaus' shoulder, there are no real concerns.

erich_stlmo@yahoo.com: Hey Jeff, was wondering about your thoughts and the future of Mizzou. I was shock and impress as far as the team this season. I was hoping they could pull it out against UConn, they had their chances and thought they could of won the game. D was playing great just weren't hitting their shots on offense. Have you heard anthing about Mizzou giving Anderson a raise or extension. And if Anderson does leave for another school who do you think they would bring in or who in your opinion who do you think they should bring in. I like the system and I think they should get one of the assistants or a coach that fits that system.
Jeff Gordon: It would be a shame if Anderson left now, just as he got the program back.

itdsntmttr: When are the cardinals going to use their farm system for backup players
(they do to a point). I mean why pay LaRue 1 million or so when Pagnozzi or Anderson could do the job. Neither it sounds are ever going to be a major league starter.
Jeff Gordon: Pags looks like a La Rue type, which means he could have a role. And Anderson will step in if Molina suffers a long-term injury.

OT RamFan: Jeff: You keep football interesting, so here we go! Realistically, the Rams are 2 seasons and 2 drafts away from being a team that fills its needs with quality players. Maybe the Rams can be 8-8 this year, which I would consider exciting, and pick in the 10-16 spot next year. That puts a real premium on this years pick with respect to filling a long term need and getting an exceptional player. When you look at this years 10-16 picks, there are still offensive tackles available, but no Aaron Currys. But, looking at the last 5 years, there were several linebackers 10 thru 16, but no offensive tackles. With that in mind who is the exceptional player we have to get this year that we don't have a "chance" at next year? Do you sense the organization is thinking along these terms? I think the Rams need to be exciting this year, relevant next year, and keep their fans encouraged along the way.
Jeff Gordon: Curry is an exceptional talent -- and this team needs building blocks. If the Rams keep that No. 2 pick, it needs to get a future Pro Bowl. Curry could be that guy.

BluesFan: Hey Gordo,

Blues are playing great! Oshie seems to be a great mixture of so many old blues--sutter, gilmour, bobby basson....

3 Questions:

If the Blues do make the playoffs, who do you see Kariya playing with....

Any chance Brewer returns?

After seeing how the Blues have been playing these past few months, what would you rate as the top 2 off season moves that need to be made (and an example or two if possible).

Thanks Gordo!
Jeff Gordon: I don't see Brewer coming back. That is a tough injury. And Kariya will have to work his way back into the mix. But . . . Murray does lots of mixing and matching, so the lines will keep shifting if the team hits the playoffs.

mars: Gordo, I may have missed this topic of conversation. But do you know why Lyons was on the bench for much the stretch run Saturday? I know any answers from the coach might be laced with PC jargin, but I feel like CMA had him on the bench for a reason. And that reason is that Leo just wasn't being aggressive, he disappeared. I thought he had ample opportunities to drive to the basket, and instead chose to try and hit jump shots from the perimeter. When he was "playing", he was hard to defend and showed he was the most athletic player on the floor for MU this season. But all too often, he would pull these disappearing acts during games, and it would hurt this team. I thought Saturday was one of those times. Am I wrong? Reading too much into it? And what is your feeling on it? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: I love Mike Anderson! He threw up a half-hearted long-distance bomb right away and got the hook. Bam! Keith Ramsey came in and provided a lift. Even in Leo's last game as a Tiger, CMA leaned on him. Beautiful.

bigmatth67: Gordo

Who is #1 on the Rams Draft Board?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: I can only guess. I would put Curry there, but that determination may not be made until close to draft time. Let's see what Detroit does. If the Lions make an advance deal with the No. 1, then we'll know so much more.

Cards4520: Thanks for taking your time...

Listening to sports radio this morning, it sounds like there isn't too much interest in teams wanting to hire anderson. With Alabama already hiring someone, and Kentucky possibly going with Cappalari (spelled his name wrong)...what do you think the chances of having him back are next year? What kind of raise is he looking at? And who has the better season next year for the tigers- Their football or baskeball program?
Jeff Gordon: CMA stands to get a $450,000 per year raise, plus bonuses.

Cards4520: With Ludwick struggling, Rasmus doing so-so, and Duncan being a hot hitter (God knows we are just talking about hitting...) Who will be the starting outfielders for opening day?
Jeff Gordon: Rick, Ludwick and Duncan would be a starting point, with Rasmus starting out in the old Schumaker role. Skip will switch out to OF to replace Duncan defensively. If Ryan struggles early, then Rasmus could get some early starts.

Encino: Assuming the Detroit Lions do not trade down, what is your best guess as to whom they will select at #1?
Jeff Gordon: I want Curry, but I can see them taking J. Smith if he's there.

bully: Alooooooha!! from Hawaii!!
Hey Gordo! a lot of Ram Fans here in Hawaii, even after they Left L.A....oh, just a little note, and not a knock on St. Louis, which one day, i will visit to watch my beloved Rams, but, all us Ram fans here never say St. Louis Rams, we just call them the Rams!! only becuase of the move, and we get teased a lot being called fans of the "Lambs!" but hopefully, NOT this year! o.k., sorry for the chatter, question: The Draft, do you think we go Curry, and if not, Crabtree? a lot of us fans here want Curry, but would LOVE Crabtree, if Curry is gone at #1. Who do YOU like if you could make the call? aloha, mahalo, and thank you for your time!
Bully :)
Jeff Gordon: I'd be surprised if Crabtree came here, given the Spags has been talking.

cbc1b: with the eye on next year and the minimal value of Brewer unitl recovery from the back injury combined with contract and the re introduction of EJ into the mix who would you consider the top six defensemen next year?

also who would you consider at risk with #9 returning next year?

thank you for the input
Jeff Gordon: I'd keep Crombeen and Winchester, regardless of what happens with Paul. Love those two guys.

I'd go with E. Johnson, Brewer, Polak, Jackman, Pietrangelo and McKee. Nice mix of young and old. If somebody else takes McKee, then I like Weaver.

Dave: Any chance the Redbirds re-up Ankiel at some point during the season or is it a foregone conclusion that Boras will advise him to bolt for greener pastures at season's end? Rick seems to have some loyalty to Tony and the organization for sticking with him through his well-documented transition from pitching phenom to power hitting outfielder. Who sticks, Ryan, Barden, or Thurston? Alas, is Oshie the second coming of Jeremy Roenick?!!
Jeff Gordon: Good T.J. comparison.

Rick's market value may come to earth in this new economic world order. Maybe it will be easier to keep him than people think.

Dan Buffa: Hey Gordo,

A question about the Cards closer situation. An update. With all the roster talk coming up and the spring training session ending, who looks like the Cards closer right now? It has to be one person. Its widely known that a committee hasn't worked here or anywhere. La Russa stresses that Ryan Franklin has experience there, but its only short term bad experience. Josh Kinney is stuck in comeback mode. Chris Perez has either been inconsistent or injured. My pick is Jason Motte. He has the perfect recipe for a closer. Mean looking, hard throwing, resilient, and ready. And he has the stats. He has pitched just over 12 innings and has mostly been untouched. Lots of strikeouts. No walks. He has earned the job. This is a young team. Motte should get the nod. Everythings a competition. I think Motte earned it. Of course I am just another writer. You do this for a living and know more. What do you think? And whats the inside track on the hunt for the new Redbirds closer?
Always a pleasure,
Dan Buffa
Jeff Gordon: Motte is the obvious leader, based on talent and performance. Perez could close fast and get in the late-inning mix. And TLR will mix in some vets to keep the load off. He doesn't want to give a guy too much too soon.

Todd: Gordo, noticed Paul Kariya in the Checketts box both Thursday and Saturday night. Also, JD said this am on KMOX that Kariya is getting closer to returning. Is he traveling with the team now? Any projection for when he will start practicing with them? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Practice soon. Play -- not until the playoffs.

gene f: gordo!
could someone please rename the Kids Line, that is absolutely so square and sickening. They arent kids, they are men making tons of cash, do you think oshie thinks hes akid! Or is it a phrase for all the fans to think they are proud parents of these young men and the over advertised blues just love it? I agree they are the best thing to happen to st. louis in years but, Please make it stop!
Jeff Gordon: Given Andy's penchant for line juggling, I'm not sure these guys will be long together.

dabeerdude: is their any interest in defensive tackle tank johnson , or is this another four pillars situation ?
Jeff Gordon: Character issues!

JeffInColorado: Gordo,

Thanks for taking your time to answer our Q's as always.

Mine is Blues related.

I honestly could care what any media outlet say about our Blues. However there is something that I have always wanted to know. Power Rankings. I understand that the guys at TSN, ESPN, Yahoo, or wherever... Cannot watch every team play every game.

But power rankings are based off of a teams recent play are they not? Or are they supposed to be? I keep seeing the Blues hover between 15th and 20th in the league recently when quite honestly, we are one of the best teams in the NHL since January. Mason is 20-7-5 in his past 32. Thats the Blues record. Not just his.

If power rankings are based off of an ENTIRE seasons play then all we have to do is look at the standings and power rankings are useless. But if power rankings are based off of recent play then the Blues should be in the top 3.
Jeff Gordon: Few teams have played better in the new year. And quality wins over Columbus (twice), Calgary and Vancouver are telling.

Rob: What is Manny Legace's status? If the Blues make the playoffs, I'm assuming they'll want a veteran backup, not Holt or Bishop. Is it possible for the Blues to bring him up through re-entry waivers either now or after the playoffs start? Or is he stuck at Peoria for the rest of the year?
Jeff Gordon: Manny would have to clear waivers, but nobody would claim him. I do like the idea of having him here as insurance -- because the Note is a pulled groin way from falling out of this thing.

ramfanoncapecod: hey jeff, i think the rams should go with Curry, seems like they have enough young guys at the o-line, we havent had a middle linebacker that can be that good since hacksaw reynolds. What do you think? Thanks for taking my question, from cold Cape Cod Ma.
Jeff Gordon: Fletcher was really good, too -- better than the coaches realized.

newyorkram!: In your opinion, what are the odds that Alex Barron is the starting LOT on opening day?

Thanks Stud Gordon,

NYR
Jeff Gordon: Stud? Got the wrong guy. Barron will start somewhere next year. He's better on the left side, so that makes sense.

Chris (Brooklyn): Gordo--

Can you give me your best bet at who's going to be sent down to the minors? We already know about Pagnozzi-- but who else is leaving the roster?
Jeff Gordon: It's a coin flip now. Perez has to pitch his way on the roster, but he has time. I see Thurston's versatility really helping him, but Ryan is versatile too. Barden is the best 3B of the bunch, but if Freese holds up, he'll hold that job.

Chris: Despite playing on the road, it looks very possible to get at least 4 wins out of the last 6 games. Especially with the momentum (sorry Murray...) they are carrying. Call it, Blues finish in 6, 7, 8, or 9 in the West?
Jeff Gordon: I'm finally believing. Until now, I've expected the team to miss. Now I see them squeezing in at No. 8.

Chris (Brooklyn): Hey Gordo--

Big fan of yours out East! Is Rasmus making the roster? I'd much prefer to see him in LF on opening day. Tell me he's not a bench player and the Cards are finally committed to seeing what this kid has got.

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus could start in the old Schumaker role. If he hits, he'll play more. It is a good situation to have -- four guys with power. Colby's defensive ability and speed should earn him lots of work.

59 Cadillac: will erik johnson be playing if the blues are able to make the playoffs?and any news on johnson or kariya's if they been able to hit the ice yet?
Jeff Gordon: Johnson no, Kariya yes.

Ramsfever: Hello Jeff.

Thanks for information regarding the Rams. I have a few questions for you.

1. Do player like Joel Filani, Antwon Burton,Quinten Culberson and Mark Setterstom have anything to offer the Rams this year? All of these players are positions of need and I would to know what the Rams see from them?

2. Do you think the Rams would look to trade Pisa T. for a middle round pick with Witherspoon being moved to the weakside?

3. If Detroit takes one of the OL at number one 1, and the Rams have the choice of Eugene Monroe, Stafford and Aaron Curry, want to you think the Rams will do with the pick?
Jeff Gordon: If they could got a middle-round pick for Pisa, they should do it. Not sure he has a spot in this D.

Culberson disappointed last year. I liked Setterstrom, but he's had some huge injuries. Not sure about their futures.

Cory: Master of masters:

Are you getting the feeling that Tony is starting to feel like he can use Raz in enough situations to keep him around and without impeding his progress? Or, are you getting the feeling he is trying to find him a role because of pressure comming from upstairs? Just curious, I think it's probably a little of both, but the kid does have some serious tools.

thanks man,

Cory
Jeff Gordon: This team needs a strong fourth outfielder and Mather's cold start left that gig open. The one negative is the overabundance of lefty hitters. I think Colby is too good to go down.

Matt: Hi Gordo-

How does Mizzou's basketball recruiting class look like next year? Hopefully, we can some good size coming in?

Love the chats. Thanks for all you do.
Jeff Gordon: Touched on that. He has a 6-10 three-star high school forward, but that kid my have eligibility issue. He is after a 6-11 JUCO center that will make or break the class.

BillP: Hey Jeff, how much longer do you think the Blues will be able to retain Kekalainen here in his current role? I mean lets face it, for the Blues to get this kind of return from their draft picks on Oshie, Berglund and Perron this quick is nothing short of amazing. Picks all taken in the 24th thru 26th range (not exactly guaranteed picks of success), all from 2005-2007. I mean without Kekalainen, the Blues wouldn't be where they are right now..........will the Blues be able to sway him to stay in the organization? Thanks and Have a good week !
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but . . . his earlier picks left something to be desired. He is respected league-wide, but I'm sure anybody is ready to hire him as GM.

Monte Estes: The Glaus injury situation is already having a Mulder ring to it. How likely do you think it is that we've seen the last useful playing time from Troy Boy?
Jeff Gordon: I had the same thought. So write off Glaus. If he plays again, great. If he does, find his replacement from the stack of good prospects.

Griff21: how long is cola under contract for ? & since he hasn't played a lot of games do we hold his rights longer than his current contract?
Jeff Gordon: I believe he has one more year. Then it's cash-in time, if he keeps it going.

BTW, I left him off my top six for next season. Just an oversight -- he is in the group with EJ, Brewer, Jackman, Polak, Pietrangelo, et al.

Chance: Shouldnt the Rams at least look at trading For Anquan Boldin?
Jeff Gordon: They would have to give up too much at a time when there are too many holes to fill.

Griff21: I heard Brewer was still having some nerve problems. was there more problems than originally thought, the surgery not go as well as planned? or is that normal in the course of recovery?
Jeff Gordon: I don't know if it is normal, but it is concerning for the long haul.

Griff21: Correct me id I'm wrong but Manny is not eligible to play in the playoffs since he was not on the roster by the cutoff date?
Jeff Gordon: You know, I don't know if he can be on a reserve list and be eligible for an emergency injury call-up. That is how he would come.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

Anything new on the Torry Holt front? I read a little piece that he's hoping for a bidding war between Jacksonville and Tennessee but do you think he burned the Titans bridge when he refused to redo his contract to complete a trade?
Jeff Gordon: "Bidding War" may be an optimistic assessment. There is interest, but let's see where the money hits.

Griff21: I noticed Travis Turnbull signed (pits maybe I forget now...) It would have been nice to sign another hometown kid , who looks pretty skilled. I heard we were interested in him, why couldnt we sign him?
Jeff Gordon: I know the Blues showed some interest. At the end, a kid must choose a situation where he has the best chance to advance. The Blues are stacking up some players.

JeffInColorado: Gordo...

Chris Mason vs. Steve Mason

Who ya got?
Jeff Gordon: Head to head, Chris has torn him up. Weird thing, but no other team really got to Steve this year.

Chris: The Blues have erased Manny from every highlight shown at scottrade, and even the banner on the side of the building. You really see them brining him back up for playoffs? It seems some serious bridges have been burned. (And a side note, how sad for him, considering how much he loved this team the past few years, to not be here for the redemption....)
Jeff Gordon: If Mason blew out his groin and the Blues had to go with Chris Holt, that would be a shame.

Carlo: So are you saying I'm not playing for the Blues next year?
Jeff Gordon: Just an oversight. Can't forget the great job you've done!

I didn't think much of the Stempniak trade at the time, but Carlo paid big dividends.

Griff21: Is there reason for concern of the starters only carp has gone 6+ innings. Lohse and welle just had rough outings. they should be in command and stretching out innings now
Jeff Gordon: There is always concerned when guys get rocked late in the year.

JeffInColorado: Who do you like the Blues matching up with in the first round more?

Sharks?
RedWings?

Also, wouldn't it be great if the Sharks won the presidents trophy and the Blues knocked them out in the first round? Ahhhhhh sweet revenge!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Sharks.

Yur Mom: Hi Jeff,

The changes at Rams park has been drastic and exciting. I get a real sense from the forums that the Rams fanbase is pumped for next year. I think that stems from what we can see as clear progress towards being a REAL football team and not a collection of body's collecting paychecks.

As a reporter, have you noticed any difference in how Rams Park is handling the media?

Do the people you deal with at Rams Park seem as excited about the direction of the Rams as the fans do?

Thanks, YM.
Jeff Gordon: These guys are all business, as it should be. Not as much yukking it up. But there is nothing funny about 5-27.

littlecotton: Gordo,

We should rename the Kid line to The Young Guns line.
Jeff Gordon: That's been done . . .

Steve: I agree with the comparisions of Oshie to Roenick. But I think Oshie might compare to another great player, Pat Verbeek. They are more of the same size and wasn't Verbeek's nickname The Little Ball of Hate. It's a shame that nickname is taken because they way TJ plays he will sure make the rest of the league hate him. I love how he abused Nash this weekend. Thanks for the chat.
Jeff Gordon: Verbeek was an agitator, too, with great hands. But T.J.'s speed and body checking are so much better.

407CardsFan: Whats Up Jeff?

Thanks for answering our questions!

I notice Freese is running away with the 3rd base job. Did Mather do something, besides his bat as of late, to get him booted from the competition? I could be way off base here, but I am just curious since I don't ever remember hearing anything bad about his glove.

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Joe is barely adequate defensively, so he has to hit to keep that gig. And he didn't hit. Still has a nice future, though.

BradV: Hey Gordo! Do you see TLR actually naming a closer before opening day? I don't see the value of closer by committee, when you got a guy like Motte throwing in the upper 90's, and continues to impress in SP.
Jeff Gordon: I think Motte will emerge. But TLR doesn't want to burden the kid right out of the gate with the title. He'll spot others in the role and see how it works. But Motte has the tools to grab the job.

oneramsfan: Hows it! What are the chances of us taking Matt Stafford?
Jeff Gordon: Just about zero.

Luke: Gordo,
Who was it that hired Devaney? How did we know about him? Why wasn't he a GM already? I have my first man-crush.
Thanks,
Luke
Jeff Gordon: Shaw saw the need to add a football guy. Linehan was OK with it and Jay played along, hoping to keep his gig.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

What's your opinion of:

1) Curry
2) Loadholt
3 Francois DT-LSU. I think he was injured for most of the season last year but in '07 as a sophomore he tore it up and I think he was the defensive MVP of the BCS title game that year.
Jeff Gordon: Love Curry and I see Loadholt's potential. Don't know much about Ricky, who gambled a bit by coming out as he did.

That's it for this week. Thanks for all the questions!
