Jeff: JG,
This year the Cards look like a team that can put together a long winning streak,(4-9games) something they have not been able to do in the last two years. This is what will make them dangerous in the Central. I LOVE OCTOBER BASEBALL IN ST. LOU

Thanks Jeff
Jeff Gordon: If they can keep Carpenter, Wainwright and Lohse healthy, that is a pretty good rotation. That is the key to putting streaks together. The Cards have won with some big offensive games this year and some little ones.

Last year, they pretty much had to outscore teams.

virginiatom: Originally I had thought that Devaney had a nice draft last year, but looking back on it now, it was about a C overall, which is a terrible grade for picking so high in the draft. Other teams with worst draft position did so much better. Long has not shown himself to be an impact player, Avery is not a number 1 receiver, and Greco and Goldberg will never be starters. I see this being the result of a flawed draft strategy that has haunted the Rams for years and is why they are among the worst teams in the league. They continuously draft for need instead of taking the best player available, regardless of postion. This has to stop. Taking Smith as a tackle might be good, but you can't tell me he is the 2nd best player in this draft. Why not take the 2nd best player in the draft at 2, and then the the 35 best player in the draft when they pick 2nd, and so on and so on. With an average draft last year, horrible drafts the four years before that, and an average draft this year, the Rams will be done for years to come.
Jeff Gordon: Chris Long will be an impact player. He is much better than Glenn Dorsey -- the guy fans wanted.
Donnie Avery showed flashes of being an impact WR. Was he reach there? Perhaps, but his rookie season was marred by injury and the team's general incompetence.
Greco could start this year.
Goldberg wasn't in that draft class.
CB Justin King had a great camp, then suffered a knee injury. Jury is still out.
Keenan Burton has the tools to be a No. 1 or No. 2 receiver. Again, injuries and the team's offensive collapse skewed his production.
Roy Schuening had a nice camp last year and could back-up this year.
Chamberlain and Vobora are special teams guys. Maybe they stick again, maybe not.

I can see a scenario where this class deserves a "C" after another year. And I can see it becoming an "A" class if King, Avery and Burton stay healthy and progress.

virginiatom: If Burris is not suspended by the league, why not pick him up for the year? The Rams can use Crabtree but it doesn't look like they are going to grab him, so Burris would be a good number 1. Burris was a monster with the Giants, and if we keep Incognito with all his issues because he can play, surely we can use Burris for a year and deal with his issues too. Its worth it and he can be the differance alone in winning several games, especially with bringing a red zone presence the Rams desperately lack. The Giants players wanted him back, and he wasn't disruptive in that way. I say grab him while he is still there and its one more hole we have filled on a team with too many holes to fill in this draft.
Jeff Gordon: Spags knows all about Plaxico and his constant unwillingness to abide by team rules. A rebuilding team doesn't need that kind of player.

ueaces: Nothing like a three game sweep to get Cardinal Nation buzzing.

Say what you want about Tony, but NO ONE utilizes his bench better.

Can somebody on the team keep telling Lohse it is April for the rest of the year!

Gordo, Greene looks alreay like he is going to be a solid shortstop for the Cards the rest of the year. Your impressions?
Jeff Gordon: Khalil was great in the spring and it carried over. He needed a change of scenery. If he keeps this up, Mozeliak should seriously consider a contract extension. Tyler Greene is a nice prospect, but Khalil could be a nice, solid, B+ performer at a key offensive and defensive position.

stlbluespower: Jeff--Thanks as always in advance for answering our questions--
I am so excited about the Blues, more excited than I've been about another St. Louis or Missouri team in the past several years. Is it too hopeful on my part to think this team has a chance to advance in these playoffs? I think this team is special, and if they can stay healthy and Mason continues to do the job he's doing, why can't they knock off any team in the West? Even if they lose in the first round, I won't be disappointed. But I don't think they will. Blues in 7--What do you say?
Jeff Gordon: Luongo is one of the NHL's top few goaltenders, so the Note will have to creak lots of havoc in the offensive zone to score. Mason will have to be brilliant. The Note will have to rock on the power play and tighten up on the kill.

The Blues beat one top team after another down the stretch. So, yes, they have a chance.

Terry710: Gordo...I have two questions..#1 In the future the Cards will begin contract extension talks with Albert, do you believe ownership will offer him a "lifetime" contract?... #2..I have noticed many baseball players are wearing a cord necklace. Is it a good luck charm??
Jeff Gordon: Not a necklace guy, can't help you there.

Will the Cards buck up for Albert? Can't promise that, but this ownership has a great track record with the very best players. With so much talent in development, affording a $20 million-plus player is much easier. And staying in the hunt year after year is easier -- and that means everything to Albert.

captain hero: What is the deal with all the beards on the Cardinals?
Jeff Gordon: Good question. The guys must be have been expecting a cold April in St. Louis.

virginiatom: Gordo, I hope Billy and Spags see this and agree that while building from the inside out is smart, so is having a game changing, pro-bowl caliber impact player at your key skill positions. We have no one on the Rams who fits that bill, other than maybe Steven Jackson, when he is healthy. The Rams defense has no leadership, and no one who played last year on D seems capable of stepping up this year to do that. Curry seems to have all those natural qualities, as well as ability. I would be ok with an offensive tackle with the #2 pick if he was the best player available at #2 instead of just the best tackle to fill a need we have. Pro-bowl players with attitude bring excitement to the game, and we have been lacking that for so long on defense. And they make everyone around them better. Please Spags, help us out here!
Jeff Gordon: If the Rams staff came out of the minicamp believing Draft could handle MLB for a year, then the pick of Smith or Monroe at OT seems obvious. I'd rather see them tackle Curry, then maneuver to take an OT next.

JohnnyN: Hi Gordo,
What a weekenend for the STL sportsfan!! Couple of questions for you...

How long of a leash do the Cards give Wellemeyer?

How do the Blues match up against the Canucks?

Why has Macklin slipped so far down in the lastest projected NFL draft boards?

Thanks as always for your insight andhard work. J.
Jeff Gordon: Maclin is up on some boards, actually, thanks to Harvin's issues and Crabtree's health. He'll be OK.

The Blues are OK against Vancouver. They split their games in the second half of the season. Mason will have to play great, though.

Wellemeyer has a decent leash, due to his success last season. As long as the Cards have three or four starters clicking at once, they can be patient with a guy. And the options at Memphis right now would rank as just OK.

steve: Gordo:

If Duncan continues to hit like the pre-injury Duncan, and Rasmus proves a legitimate big-league outfielder, do you see the Cards shopping Ankiel for a need (3rd base or closer come to mind) because of the difficulty they perceive in signing Ankiel to a long-term contract (Boras)?

Also, what is it about Glaus' injury do you know that we don't that makes you think he may not return at all this year?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Whenever a player runs off to rehab a shoulder injury for a couple of months, that is not good. That puts his recover on a very long arc, perhaps longer than this season. Even if he feels great by June, then he would need to play three weeks of baseball somewhere before returning to the majors. If his rehab drags past June, then you write the guy off and move along.

The Cards will have to trade OFs at some point because they are stacking up on the depth chart. I can see the Cards dealing one for a reliever at some point. Third base? The prospects are stacked up there, too.

HEG: Gordo I find myself agreeing with TLR on most moves this year; usually I disagree on about 2 out of three moves he makes. Motte in my opinion is not ready for the closing role; he needs to refine his pitches & gain back his confidence; maybe in Memphis. I believe the Cards need to relieve & close as the situation presents itself; from my observations I believe if the Cardinals move an outfielder it will be Ankiel but that could happen later in year if an injury occurs; everything seems to be working for the Cards thru first 7 games but that could could change. Agree or disagree on statements above???
Jeff Gordon: Ankiel could go, yes, because Rasmus is waiting to replace him and there are OFs stacked up at Memphis. This is Rick's make-or-break financial year. He will need to blow up big to cash in big, since the free-agent marketplace is much tighter now.

Motte could trade places with Chris Perez soon if the two continue on their current paths.

ernie from california: I get the feeling that Ram management knows (because the team needs lots of help) it should trade down to improve the team. It is just a matter of accepting the best deal, which may only happen at draft minutes time. Do you agree?
Jeff Gordon: Trading down makes all the sense in the world. Maybe somebody will make a last second pitch. But this doesn't look like the sort of draft where that will happen at the top.

Glenn Turner: Gordo:

Blues much better matchup agaist Vancouver than San Jose. Vancouver is good. I see the Blues matching up pretty evenly with the Canucks forward lines. I give the advantage to the Canucks at Goalie. I do not know enough about the Vancouver defense. What do you see as the keys to this series?
Jeff Gordon: The Canucks are deep on D with puck movers, so it's tough to fore-check them. That is a big edge for Vancouver, along withe goaltending. Up front, the Blues may have more weapons.

George M.: Hi, Jeff. You mentioned in your article today that it could be tough getting all 4 outfielders their at-bats. There are close to 1800 at-bats for the 3 outfield positions, plus around 150 pinch-hit at-bats, plus some at first base when Albert needs a day off or can come out of a lopsided game early. So it looks to me like close to 2000 at-bats there. Also, everyone seems to be assuming that this will be the first year in a long time that the Cardinals haven't had to DL an outfielder. I see everyone in that group who can stay off the DL getting at least 500 at-bats. I think that should be enough to stay sharp and fresh at the same time, but I don't know about staying content? Can you elaborate on the remarks in your column? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick has a breakout season, then sits twice in week while batting .389. That is not ideal. How many 100-RBI outfielders sit out games while healthy and hitting well?

Dropping Rasmus back to three starts a week would also not be ideal. He needs regular work at this age.

Over the long haul, the Cards will have some DH games and a few Pujols off-days to help get at bats. And somebody will tweak a muscle, making TLR's job easier. But spreading three jobs among four full-time players is tough.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

Does it concern you at all that the "Big Three" that are supposed to be Pujols' support (Ludwick, Ankiel, Duncan)are averaging a strikeout more than every four AB's?
Jeff Gordon: Greene strikes out a lot, too, and he could hit behind Albert some more this year. That is an issue, since Ks take away from sac flies and RBI groundouts.

Let's see what these guys hit with runners in scoring position this year. That will be a bigger number than just strikeouts.

Greg: Greetings Jeff..if Lohse is what he was last year, if Carp stays healthy and if Joel P. is consistently (good) the Cardinals rotation is formidable. The offense looks above average. What tweaks do you envision, if any, down the road?
Jeff Gordon: Gotta find a closer, obviously. If that happens, the bullpen falls together nicely because Reyes is a huge upgrade over Villone/Flores.

Even if Glaus never plays for the Cards again, the offense appears to be be sufficient. Getting power from all three OF spots and SS offsets the loss of power at 3B.

Kevin: Hey Gordo,
I know you get tons of rams draft questions, but what scenario do you think would be best for Rams? Trade down, grab an OT, or Curry?
Thanks,
Kevin in NJ
Jeff Gordon: If the team could trade down, grab a good tackle and then add LB and WR help later -- with the help of an extra pick -- that would be ideal.

Ineeda Hammer: Who is the Top OT available in the Draft and what makes him the best choice?

How does the Top OT in this yrs Draft compare to Jake Long from last yr?

How do many of the top teams in the league have such great O-lines with no first round picks on them?

When S. Jackson goes "down" at some point this yr, how much fear will Pittman, Leonard, and Darby create with opposing Defenses?
Jeff Gordon: There isn't a Jake Long in this draft. J. Smith has interesting athletic potential and Monroe is a polished product, ready to play out of the box.

The stud, high-pick OT makes building a line easier. The Rams had one of those (Pace), a pricey free agent guard (Timmerman), a fifth-round pick at OT (Miller) and journeymen inside.

Typically it is a mix.

The Rams need a second RB to play behind Jackson.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

I definitely bought into Motte and I still believe he can be a hammer at the end of games. I just don't see the value of a flamethrower in the 6th and 7th innings. He will basically be getting mop up work, and teams can hit 95mph in the 6th just like they can in the 9th. Wouldn't our pen be better served to send Jason back to Memphis and get a more versatile arm up here? Do the Cards think this is something that he can correct in a week's time? If he is in fact going to need some time to work through this, I have to believe that Walters or Boggs makes this a more versatile pen in the meantime.
Jeff Gordon: If Motte goes down, Perez comes up. He got off to a strong start in Memphis. He has more pitches than Motte, but he lacked command this spring.

Motte needs to use his off-speed stuff, as he did Saturday. And he needs to work that heat lower in the zone, where it has more movement, and to the edges.

Let's see if Franklin buys the Cards time or if the team needs to move more quickly.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

A week in, it looks like TLR and Mo pulled all of the right strings in terms of the 25 they brought to STL (maybe with the exception of Motte). What is the first pitching move and first positional move you see being made?
Jeff Gordon: Perez for Motte is a move waiting to happen. And if Mather gets on a roll, his power would help this team more than Barden's infield depth. Thurston looks very good at 3B so far, which is a surprise. With Thurston and Ryan starting well -- and Skip holding up at second -- adding a RH bat with heft would make sense.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

What is the internal stance on Kyle Mac as an interim (or long-term) closer? He can still hit 94, and has well rounded stuff compared to Motte and Perez. He hits the strike zone, which Kinney has trouble doing. And finally, he seems to have that TLR/Dunc favorite: THE BULLDOG MENTALITY.

Do you think Kyle will be saved for save situations this week, or is TLR really sold on a true closer by committee?
Jeff Gordon: Kyle won over La Russa with his mental toughness. That was a large save the other day. He struggled in the spring, so TLR is keeping an eye on that. Franklin has been strong since the start of camp, so he leads the committee as we stand today.

davulture24: The Rams have been making all the right moves this offseason. My only hope is that they can find a quality, veteran receiver to help in teaching the "kids" how to do more than just run fast. Do you see a Harrison or Toomer type coming into St. Louis to help out?
Jeff Gordon: I see those guys seeking work with a contender.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

At first I was questioning our 4-man OF rotation, thinking, how could this possibly satisfy a top 5 prospect, a Silver Slugger/All-Star, a free agent to be and a guy returning from surgery that has legitimate 30 HR pop?

I've noticed, that for the first time in a long time, Mather's absence has forced TLR to let two lefties battle it out against lefties. And the early returns look good. The number of "matchups" he can play are limited, and the two lefties that DO get into the lineup finally feel that the manager believes in them.

I've always wondered why we are so HORRIBLE against lefties. And I always thought that part of it was the message TLR was sending...he would have almost rather seen Jason LaRue roaming center against Johan Santana than Jim Edmonds.

Do you see this pattern continuing, or will we be subject to the true platoon once Mather is back up and running?
Jeff Gordon: Duncan made a great point elsewhere on this site. Why is he hitting lefties better? Because he saw so many of them during the spring. Now he can hang in there against them. By holding batters out against lefties, their inability to hit lefties becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Let's see if Duncan, Ankiel, Schumaker and even Rasmus hold up against lefties overall.

I'd like to see another RH power hitter in the mix, but right now there are no ABs for a guy like Mather except as a PH and 3B fill-in.

c-redbird: Hi Jeff, Is anyone concerned about Ankiel's performance thus far? He's looked pretty bad at times at the plate and not great in center either. I know he's faced alot of lefties, but... On the flip side, Rasmus has looked pretty good at the plate and looked really good gliding around in center on Sunday. Is this a developing situation? Thanks for the chat and for taking my question...
Jeff Gordon: Rick hasn't looked great at the plate in the real games, but he was terrific in the spring. Teams are really loading the lefties against the Cards. Duncan has passed the test, so he'll get more at bats.

Ankiel needs a great statistical year to cash in as a free agent. Next year FA market could even tighter than the last one. The pressure is on!

davispastry@verizon.net: would like to know why curry didnt play mlb in college was he not suited or was someone better suited ? if so who was he and is he in this draft? thanks
Jeff Gordon: Stanley Arnoux was Wake Forest's MLB. He was productive, finishing third on the team in tackles. Scouts Inc. ranks him 13th among ILB prospect this year.

warreng2k1: Hi Gordo,

One week into the Cardinals season, what would you say is 1) a trend that will continue 2) a trend that won't and 3)something we haven't seen yet?

Warren
Jeff Gordon: Good starting pitching out to be a trend, given Pineiro's strong spring. He was the weak link coming in.

The bullpen by committee will last a while longer, but I'd expect Tony to settle on somebody so that all the other roles fall in place.

We haven't see much of Freese or his potential power bat. So we can't assess whether he is the long-term answer at 3B.

kat89447: I am so glad that baseball is back. I think it is very hard to measure rookies and such on paper so it does not surprise me that we are doing well. It will be interesting to see how we fair come the end of April. I do think it is too early to talk about swapping Motte for Perez just yet though. I know that Mac rode the rookie cooler last year, with all of our rookies this year, who is riding the cooler this season?
Jeff Gordon: Motte is the baby out there. If he swaps with Perez, then Chris will be the low man on seniority.

Armen Dacity: There have ben a number of reports indicating that the Rams are interested in Fresno State's Tom Brandstater. My sense is that most "experts" have him rated as a 5th or 6th round prospect. Do you think the Rams will wait until the 5th to take him, or could you see them grabbing him in the 4th to ensure that another team does not get him first?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see them reaching for anybody, given their needs across the board. Last year they reached a bit to add WR speed, and for good reason. That position was thin and the Rams had an acute need. This year they really can take the best player in every round because they need almost everything.

Marco: One of top priorities of the St.Louis Rams was to get bigger going into the off-season. With that said, is it safe to assume that Eugene Monroe has the edge over Jason Smith?

The Rams also need a number two running back, what does the free agent market look like at that position?

Thanks Gordo.
Jeff Gordon: The RB market is not great. Let's see if somebody gets cut this summer or during some team's camp.

I talked to Jim Hanifan about these two and he liked Monroe more. The Rams have always liked him a lot. But . . . Smith has fascinating athletic potential. So that's where the choice gets tricky.

cardsfaninphx: I know our offense is not the problem and that the rational fan is screaming for more bullpen help (Brad Thompson, really???), but c’mon, don’t we have to appease Albert before his contract comes up? Here is my thinking: It's silly, I know, but I just can't get off the point that if Albert had real protection in the lineup (like Ortiz provided for Manny in Boston) that his .375 would be MUCH higher, no? I'm not the unrealistic fan that expects the DeWitt's to spend more then the organization has, but don't we have to do something to get into the WS (again) while Albert is in his prime? It seems like we're in a similar position to the Cleveland Cav's with LBJ. I like Luddy, Ank, Dunc, etc. but can't we go and acquire another toy for Tony to play with to provide REAL protection for his wonder boy?
Jeff Gordon: If you add another big bat, and pay for it, then you make it harder to pay Albert AND invest in starting pitching.

If teams walk Albert all year, the Cards have enough firepower to score runs. They have firepower stacked up in the minors, all the way to Class AA ball. That will become evident during the final three years of Albert's deal.

The Cards scored the fourth-most runs in the NL last year and should rank higher this year, unless injuries decimate the team.

bpage: Gordo:

Had the opportunity to read your article today on positives and questions from the recent home stand. Clearly, the Schumaker experiment is still just that, an experiment. Isn't second base Joe Thurston's "natural" position? If Joe keeps hitting the way he did during the homestand, and with his speed on the base paths, does this not pose a potentially difficult decision for La Russa concerning who to play at second?
Jeff Gordon: Joe IS a natural second baseman. And his speed on the bases makes a different. But he's a long way from establishing himself as a full-time big league. Schumaker did that last year.

Now, if Skip falters and Freese proves he can handle 3B, then Thurston is a threat to move in at 2B the way Miles did.

Cards4520: Thanks for taking your time to answer our questions.

1.)With the blues playing so hot, what do you think the chances are that they could win the cup?

2.)It looks like TLR is giving Rasmus sometime playing. Do you think he will use him like he is now and continue to do so even if he gets exposed as a hitter?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues have beaten everybody down the stretch, so, yes, they could go on a run. They would be underdogs in every series. I don't think they have a Cup-worthy defense. But any team that goes from 15th to sixth must be taken seriously.

TLR will play Rasmus quite a bit. If Colby really struggles at the age of 22, he will sit or go to Memphis. There are so many options. Everybody has to earn their ABs.

Tiger J: Jeff, Blues in playoffs, Cardinals off to a good start and Rams with a FO, things are looking better wouldnt you say?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but nothing has been decided. We'll have plenty to debate yet.

john thomas: Can you tell me if any of the Blues p/off games are going to be shown on
local channels or only on fox-sports-mdw?
Jeff Gordon: Due to the Cards broadcasts, some games will be on FSN and some will be on Channel 11.

Chocolate Thunder: GORDO,
This is a question everyone is asking. Why isn't Ludwig an everyday player, it's absolutely mind boggling?
I think it might have something to do with the fact that TLR still wears his pants like they did in the 80's, maybe it's cutting off the circulation.
Jeff Gordon: Ryan had some bad numbers against certain righties, but, yes, is hard to keep a 100-RBI guy out of the mix. Ludwick finished the spring well and he has torn it up so far this season.

billyh072883: With what we saw this past week who can we expect our closer to be? With Perez pitching well in the minors what are the chances or switching him and Motts? thanks Gordo.
Jeff Gordon: It could happen down the road. It would do Motte good to straighten stuff out at this level so that his confidence doesn't take a hit. A few more middle-relief outings like the one he had Saturday will help him.

springpatchfan: Jeff...I am still confused about Rule V as it relates to Luis Perdomo. He was claimed off waivers and is on the 25-man roster of the Padres. Did the Cards decline his return for $25K or was SD free to claim him provided he stays on their active roster all year? I thought a Rule V draftee returned to the team from which he was drafted if the drafting team removed the player from their roster. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards could have taken him back had he cleared waivers. The rule exists so players don't trapped in the minors. Had the Cards taken him back, he would have been stuck in the minors.

It was silly to expose him to the Rule V. There was a spot on the 40-man roster for him. Having one more power arm in the pen would have been nice.

ncdc: Dear Jeff,

If the Rams take J. Smith or Monroe at #2, and knowing Spags puts an emphasis on getting a pass rush with his front four, do you think the Rams would seriously consider DE Michael Johnson if he's there at the top of the 2nd?
Jeff Gordon: With Little and Long on hand, I would be surprised if the Rams went there with the second pick -- given the needs at ILB and WR.

Kurt King: It was fairly obvious to most that Bulger gets pretty nervous in the pocket due to several years of getting pounded and slammed. The million-dollar question is can he shake it off and return to his previous form? How long do the Rams give him to re-locate his cluster? Thanks Jeff.
Jeff Gordon: Marc will get this season to regroup. I'm skeptical that he can actually regroup, but we'll see. If he flops, he'll be done here.

Ray: Gordo:
All signs point to an OT with the Rams first pick...do you have any insight as to which tackle, Monroe or Smith, they prefer and why?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Again, Monroe is smoother and more polish. Smith has big athletic upside. Smith's overall stock is higher to most teams, given that upside. But Monroe would step right in and handle the gig.

kingoftruth: Hey Gordo,

It seems to me that the Blues need to try to "out-physical" the Canucks in this series. Vancouver has great speed & maybe the Blue can throw them off their game by playing a brusing style (much like the Ducks have played the last 2 or 3 yrs).

What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: The Canucks can give it back with Kesler and Burrows. And Sundin is still a load, even at his age. The Vancouver is skilled and Bieksa is tough. There is no Giant Gino out there, but they are pretty tough. It's not just the Sedin twins and Pavol.

But, sure, the team needs to play vigorously and try to force turnovers. That is a big part of why they are here. The big challenge will be to rattle that D, which is very good with the puck.

Joey Bianco: It’s great to see the Blues in the playoffs again and they’re definitely
riding a wave of momentum, but what do the Blues need to do to crack Vancouver's Robert Luongo amour??
Jeff Gordon: He doesn't give up much, so it's the usual thing: Deflections and rebounds. He'll stopped what comes through clean and he doesn't flop around in the crease.

Dan in Dodge City, KS: Gordo, two questions:

1. If you were to guess where the Rams will be in five years, would it be St. Louis or LA?

2. Do you think the salary cap will remain when the owners and NFLPA hammer out a new contract? (I personally think it will be a big mistake to do away with it.)

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: I'm betting on the Rams being here and the NFL having a cap.

njramsfan1328: Jeff,
Will you be at the draft? I will be online at midnight on Friday just to get a wristband to get online at 2pm! Do you have any info for those attending summer camp ? will it be fan accessable? Go Rams!!
Jeff Gordon: I would expect some public scrimmages, but that hasn't been finalized. Don't expect a lot of open sessions.

As for the draft, we'll have lots of live commentary. We haven't finalized plans yet, but expect more info than ever before.

rams26: Hello Jeff -

Thank you for these chats! Can you describe how the mood at Rams Park has changed since the new regime has taken over?

Thank you!
GO RAMS!!!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: It's all business all the time. Which is appropriate.

Will: Can you give me reason for the lower velocity on Mott's fastball? Last year he was throwing 98 consistantly, and with decent location. Now he is topping out at 95. Why the decrease?
Jeff Gordon: Goold wrote about this. There is a difference between touching 97 miles per hour and throwing 97 for strikes. Not many guys throw 97-plus for strikes all the time.

I don't know that Motte has suffered any loss of velocity.

rich: Jeff; Thanks for taking my question. Even though the Cards look good the first week. Don't we all need to be a little leery of defense at 2nd and 3rd? I know pitching will dictate how the season goes like it always does but w/Dunc's 'pitch to contact' Cards teams have always had to rely on good defense to win games more often than not.
Jeff Gordon: You are right. It's too early to know if you can get by with the D in place at these spots. Thurston's bat is nice, but can he play 3B.

Skip is very iffy at 2B.

Richard P.: Hey Jeff,

Have you ever seen an MLB game where the pitcher went out in the field so they could come back later on? It could be useful if the manager wants a specialist for one batter; put your starter/long reliever where the batter is least likely to hit it (left or right field?) and sub that fielder for the specialist. When the at bat is over, replace the specialist with another fielder and bring back the original pitcher. I haven't seen this happen before so I was wondering why no one's tried it.
Jeff Gordon: Trouble is, a lot of relievers look like Reyes or Chris Perez or Ray King or Izzy. Not OF material.

Rick: Is the Cardinals bullpen as bad as they look?
Jeff Gordon: Mixed bag there. McClellan and Reyes had good week. Kinney and Motte struggled. Thompson has given up runs, but he's had decent innings too.

familyrapp: Gordo,
With the continual expansion of sports season, how soon do you think we'll be watching the Super Bowl and MLB opening day in the same weekend? How about opening day for NHL and NBA Championships in the same week?

Thanks!
Mike
Jeff Gordon: Let's hope not . . . I don't see it.

Rick: Joe Thurston has looked pretty good so far, does this help the situation out at second? Meaning TLR doesnt need to play skip everyday, thus lowering his chances of Skip losing us games.
Jeff Gordon: If Skip scuffles, Thurston looks like a more viable alternative -- versus going outside the organization or to Ryan.

RedRedRed: Hi, and thanks for much Mr. G.

I probably should know a little about this, and have some ideas, but...

What are the reasons Babe Ruth was snubbed so often in MYP voting? Not only did he win only one, he often did not receive any votes. This was in spite of his monstrous seasons.

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: No idea there. If Babe played today, he would lose votes by playing on such a great team with so many other great hitters.

JMcD54: Who will have the better record this year--the Cardinals or the Royals? Is it going to be a close race for best team in Missouri?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have a deep organization and the money to fill holes. Can't say the same for KC.

Rick: Ankiel has looked horrible so far, and Rasmus has been decent. Are we seeing the changing of the guard in centerfield?
Jeff Gordon: Too soon to say that.

Rick: Who is the Blues man out when Kariya comes back, if he comes back?
Jeff Gordon: I suppose Winchester would be the odd man out, although his size and toughness are assets.

Mike Davis: Hey Jeff,

I'm not a fan of drafting any WRs in this year's draft because we need veterans not rookies. Who are some of the veteran wide recivers that the Rams are looking at bringing in. What are the chances of Marvin Harrison, Plaxico Burress or Amani Toomer being signed by the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: And veteran receivers don't want to go to a two-win teams. If I'm the GM, I want to add talent. I don't want teachers -- that is what the coaches are getting paid to do.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Will any of the Blues first-round playoff games be aired on national TV? I cannot find the TV schedule on the web.
Jeff Gordon: Versus has some games. Check NHL.com.

Rick: If Wainwright can find the strike zone soon, and Carpenters arm doesnt fall off, and Lohse can keep pitching the way he is, do the Redbirds become the favorites to win the central? Especially with the Cubs showing signs of weakness.
Jeff Gordon: Too soon to say that. Cards have to find a closer first.

Dave In St. Peters: Gordo,
Lets say the rams can move down in the 7-10 range...
1)If Jason Smith, Curry, and Raji are off the board and Monroe and Crabtree are both available, who would they go with?
2)Would we be willing to move down further for premium picks in this year or next year's draft (next year looks to have a pretty strong class comming)

I think the Blues have a tough draw against Vancover, but I don't think they are first round food and you don't have the best record in the 2nd half by accident...I believe if we give our 110%, we could make a run with our solid/hot goaltending and D play. How good are the Blues going to be next year...division title??
Jeff Gordon: 1) Monroe.
2) Don't go too far down. This team went 5-27 the last two years. It is time to get help.

sltest: Backes, boyes, McDonald, Berglund, tckachuk, oshie, over a full season the blues appear to have 6 guys capable of 20+ goals, not counting Perron and Karyia. Given that level of breadth is scoring is it fair to say the blues match up skill wise favorably versus Vancouver?
Jeff Gordon: Blues have the edge at forward, but Vancouver has a big edge on D and in goal.

Rob: Please set the record straight on Legace. If the Blues bring him back through re-entry waivers, can any of the playoff teams claim him even though they can't put him on their roster -- basically preventing the Blues from adding him to their roster? What is the financial cost for a team to claim someone in re-entry waivers?
Jeff Gordon: There is no cost in claiming Manny now, since he has been paid for the year. Now that the season is over, I'm sure what the reentry rules. I know teams could have blocked Manny's recall last week.

BillP: Hey Jeff, do you think Anaheim can beat San Jose? I figured the Ducks would beat the Wings but I'm not sure about the Sharks. Can you imagine if the Blues and Ducks win, a possible scenario is Blues/Hawks in 2nd round. A Duck beating on the Wings in the 2nd round and the Blues would host the Conference Finals.............Do you believe in miracles?
Jeff Gordon: The Ducks played great down the stretch. So, sure, they could win. A lot of those guys in Anaheim have won the Cup, so they know what it takes.

bob in indiana: gordo
1 week in ,I like what
I see, except for the closer, are you feeling good about this team.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed.

Jim: Any word on Kariya in the playoffs and what is your key to the series against Vancouver?
Jeff Gordon: Paul could play if Andy wants him. They key? It starts in goal. Also, the Blues will have to work double hard to force turnvoers against that strong D and create havoc in front of a very good GT.

The Striek: Gordo: I was there for the game the Blues clinched a playoff spot Friday night. For me, that was the most memorable and important game I've attended in my entire life so far. (That includes cardinals and Rams games.) In terms of the atmosphere in the building, it was one of those surreal moments that you get lost in it, 20,000 people screaming and applauding at the top of their lungs, and you could tell the players on the ice were caught up in it too. I'll never forget it. Where does that game rank for you? (Assuming you were there.) You could narrow it down to just Blues games if you want, seeing as how they haven't won a championship, and the Birds and the Rams have. Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Just Blues games, I'd rank with the elimination of Chicago in the Cujo/Belfour series. The Arena was out of control that day. I missed the Monday Night Miracle, since I wasn't in town yet.

The Striek: Gordo. Lets say that Kariya has been cleared and is coming back. Seeing as how he is the highest paid player on the team, I don't think there is anyway we can keep him off the ice. If you had to pick one player to replace him with, who would it be? My vote: Steen. His production seems like its fallen off a little bit, and he doesn't have the postseason experience like Hinote would. I'd go with either Steen or Crombeen. You?
Jeff Gordon: Steen is a superior checker and a handy guy to have. He is real versatile. Winchester has appealing size and toughness and Hinote has played really well down the stretch. It's a tough call.

Kariya would play not because of salary. He would play because of talent. If salary dictated anything, Legace wouldn't have gone to Peoria.

Steve Butler: You do a great job Gordo, and thanks for the live vine. What do you think the Rams will do in terms of back up running back and tight end (draft, trade or free agecny)? I like RB Andre Borwn from North Carolina State. He'd be a great addition for the Rams. Any possiblities with him? I still don't fel like the Rams have a great tight end. Any nmaes at TE you've heard Ram brass talk about? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: A healthy McMichael is both a great receiver and blocker. I don't see that as a priority now, after the changes the team has made.

RB is another matter. The Rams need another power runner to back up Jackson.

BillP: Hey Jeff, what's your biggest concern about the Blues heading into the playoffs? My concern is if our under-manned defensive core will continue to hold up. To me, that's our only weak link on the team. With Kariya coming back, Murray has all kinds of options up front, and of course Mason is still on fire. I expect the opposing playoff teams will try to break down our defenseman best they can. What do you think? Thanks and Have a good week!
Jeff Gordon: You are right -- the D is the weak link, despite the strong play by McKee and Weaver down the stretch.

NJ Cards Fan: Any word on - or your thoughts on - the Cards ability or willingness to sign Ankiel to a new contract before the trade deadline? If they don't sign him, do you expect him to be dealt?
Jeff Gordon: Given the massive surplus in the OF, a trade is possible -- but not mandatory. The Cards could collect a compensatory pick if he exits as a free agent.

floodtime: What do you think the chances are that Ankiel or Rasmus or Wallace is traded in the next several months? What do you think it would take from the Cards to push the button and trade some of their surplus for a relatively reliable closer? Is this pretty much moot because the salary exchange likely wouldn't work?
Jeff Gordon: Salary is not the issue. It is getting quality back that is the issue. A shutdown righthanded reliever would be a nice return, but those guys are scarce.

eternalramnation: Gordo,

Less then two weeks til the draft. Any clue if we've narrowed down who we will go with in the first round?
Jeff Gordon: I'm guessing tackle, based on what has happened with the team. But let's see what Detroit does and let's see if any team defies the odds and tries to trade up.

archie68: I have a boring question here gordo...

Can anyone on your end confirm the TV schedule for the Blues playoff games? stlblues.com is reporting conflicting information, some of which says the games will be broadcast on Versus while there is another portion of the website that says some games will be on FSN-MW and KPLR. Which is correct?
Jeff Gordon: The latter.

marpdagn: Hey, gordo. Watched the Cards game on Sunday TV, and was astonished to see an up close on Lance Berkman, who looks terrible physically and at the plate. Has he gained some weight, is he sick? Did you notice any difference?
Jeff Gordon: He's always been a big guy. Like his teammates, he didn't have a good day. It was shocking to see that lineup hit so poorly all weekend.

cardinal1: Jeff,
I always enjoy your take on the sports scene. The Cardinals look great so far.The only thing that worries me is the closer situation. Do you see anyone on the current roster in St. Louis or down at Memphis as the answer to this important role ?

Cardinal 1
Jeff Gordon: Chris Perez has always been the future closer. And he still is -- although it is too soon to write off Motte.

tom b: I keep reading how the rams "may revisit dane looker" after the draft. what should we read into that? have they talked to his agent? asked him to sit tight? is there anything here or just idle speculation?
thanks, as always.
Jeff Gordon: I don't mind Looker. It's not like there is any urgency. If comes back to add depth, fine. If not, they'll find somebody else.

Jeff: HI Jeff, how are you? Do you think the cards will use someone other than Motte as closer and if so, how soon?
Jeff Gordon: They have used Reyes and McClellan in that role. Franklin will get used there, too.

chicagoblues: Blues in 6?
Jeff Gordon: Nice thought, Vancouver is favored for a reason.

Chris: Shouldn't we know about Kariya by now? Are the Blues keeping this quiet, in an effort to keep Vancouver from fully preparing for us?
Jeff Gordon: This will be a game-to-game deal.

potsos: Hey Gordo. A lot of people are very quick to dismiss the Blues' chances against Vancouver because they believe the team will be emotionally (if not also physically) drained from their long battle toward playoff inclusion. I disagree. Do you think frazzled nerves and tired legs will play a huge role in this series or will it simply come down to which team plays to its strengths?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues are on a high right now. They aren't drained. They are rolling.

Playoff hockey is usually a game of mistakes. Almost every team plays hard at this time of year.

Grant: Hey Gordo!
As always, thank you for taking our questions...

First, you noted that the Note would probably not make the playoffs a few weeks ago - Now that they have, what is your prediction for this team in round 1 versus the Vancouver Caknuckleheads?

Finally, the Cards swept what seems to be the lowly Astros this past weekend giving us a 5-2 record to open the season. Do you think management is regretting not "bucking" up and signing a closer with major league experience? I think we'll see errors from time to time in the infield as the growing continues, but man - We cannot go through another season of blowing 30+ saves!

Go Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuues!

-G
Jeff Gordon: I predicted the Blues would miss. I thought there were too many teams in their way. And now, to keep Karma going, I'll predict them to lose.

Jerry from Memphis: Why do people continue to say that Ski['s defense at 2nd is poor? So far his range factor is 5.00 and he has turned 3 DP's in 5 starts. What's wrong with that?
Jeff Gordon: He had a costly throwing error that led to a run. He also ruined a potential double play with an errant flip. Both were on routine plays.

shive: gordo...

if the guy that killed nick adenhart is charged with murder..do you think dante stallworth should be charged with the same?
sometimes i think there is a double standard for athletes in trouble, as in the leonard little case. what do you think?
Jeff Gordon: In Stallworth's case, the victim was in the street, apparently, and not in the cross walk. That was probably the key there.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

One of my biggest concerns with Motte is that he was billed as a 97-99 mph fireballer and he was CONSISTENTLY hitting 94-95 all week. The former might be enough to blow away major leaguers (if located and set up with the slider), but 94-95 will get ripped all day. There are a lot of starting pitchers throwing 94-95 for 7 innings, so it doesn't really phase these guys to see a "fireballer" doing exactly what many starters do.

Am I way off base?
Jeff Gordon: He could throw 97 all day, but if he is up and over the plate -- with no movement and no change of speed -- he will get stepped on. Wellemeyer took 3 to 4 mph off his fastball, worked on his movement and location and got a lot better.

Bill C: Comment on the question of sending the pitcher to the outfield and bringing in another one, then bringing the original pitcher back. I believe in the 80's there was a game where Whitey Herzog sent Todd Worrell to right field and used Ken Dayley to retire a batter, then brought Worrell back to the mound.
Jeff Gordon: I've seen it before. Todd was a good athlete.

bpage: Gordo:

There has been a lot of talk about how Joe Thurston's play has made people forget about losing Aaron Miles to the Cubs. Last the last few years there was always much discussion about whether Miles should have been the everyday second baseman. Although his bat was good, people complained that Miles wasn't tall enough or had enough range, particularly when playing with a smaller shortshop like Eckstein or Izturis. What about Thurston? We've seen his hitting so far. Is he a better fit at second than Miles would have been?
Jeff Gordon: Miles did a solid job there, but I think Thurston could replicate that.

kingjames83: As the Cards swept the Astros this weekend, I thought to myself, "Are the Astros really that bad?" Is that really true? Berkmann had one decent hit, the bullpen looked like they were mediocre, and Roy Freaking Oswalt is 0-2 to start the season. They have the potential to be a good team this season, but do you think that Houston is the doormat for the NL Central for 2009?
Jeff Gordon: That is a great lineup. I expect them to score runs this year.

mythreesons13: gordo,

Can you check and see who will be the top goal scoring forwards in the upcoming free agent pack. I want to get a head start on the blues shopping list.
Jeff Gordon: Where would they put another scorer? Everybody wonders where Kariya will play now. Eller and Palushaj will be in camp. Perron is only getting better.

Jason: With the Blues now in the playoffs, how do you think the young kids will do? The simple fact of the matter is, the Blues would never be where they are with out Oshie, Berglund, Perron, and Polak. But relying on a group of rookies in the playoffs can be dangerous. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Those kids came through again and again down the stretch, so there is no reason to doubt them now.

jsmith: I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but I was wondering how subsequent NHL playoff rounds are seeded. Is it bracket-style like NCAA, or does highest remaining seed play lowest remaining seed?
Jeff Gordon: The NHL reseeds.

CardsRedOctober2009: Gordo,
Why is Rasmus removed from the #2 spot after every day there? Every game in Spring Training (remember the 5 for 6 game?) and the regular season here he has been in the #2 spot he is either moved to the bottom of the lineup or sits down. Why is that?
Jeff Gordon: But Greene looks good in the No. 2 hole. A lot of players look good there, hitting ahead of Albert.

Mike from NJ: Hey Jeff. Thanks for taking the time to answer this. I was just wondering. If Lions cannot come to terms with the #1 pick before the draft (as they have stated they wanted to do). There is talk that they then might let the clock run out & scarifice the 1st pick to save $$. If that happens who do you see the Rams taking?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: If the Lions pass, it'll be with the quarterback, Stafford. So the Rams will take the guy they planning on taking.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

If we have 4 productive OF's come the trade deadline, is it more likely (assuming we are in contention) to move one of them for an arm/prospects, or to play the season out and lose Ankiel?
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't expect the team to make a trade just to get something. If the guy can help the team win -- and there are no compelling trade offers -- then the Cards are better off keeping him, using him and then replacing him for the next year.

randy prater: hey Gordo,

I've been wondering how Ludwick has been taking to sitting as part of an outfield 'rotation', since the man is coming off an all-star and silver slugger season. I'm not critisizing TLR's thinking in this, but it would take some stones to start an outfield of guys, all who have proven less than Luddy, while he sits. Especially since he is off to a much better start than the other 3. Does this become a problem between player and manager?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: I would think Ludwick would get understandably frustrated if he sits a lot.

Chris: Do you see the Blues brining back Tkachuk next year? I think he's a vital part of this team. Who on the roster now, won't be back, either via trade or free agency? We all know Hinote, but what about Winchester, Crombeen, Steen, etc... We've got new players trying to move up, but not enough roster space..
Jeff Gordon: Hinote would be tough to bring back, given all the depth up front. McKee will be more marketable in the last year of his contract. I'd bring Walt back. I'd bring Winchester back, too. Then the team would be set.

Scott: Jeff,

What jobs do you see Coach Anderson getting offers for down the line? While I'm elated that Coach stayed this time, I'm thinking the market rate for coaches has passed Mizzou by. We're lucky he wasn't insulted by $1.35 million when Georgia and Memphis would have given him at least $2 million.

Jim Calhoun surely would have been insulted...
Jeff Gordon: Calhoun would have been insulted, for sure. Anderson will get calls from SEC schools if he keeps winning, given his recruiting base.

Jerry from Memphis: Why isn't Freese playing every day? I'd love to see what he could do with 4 ab's per game.
Jeff Gordon: I agree, to a point. But if Thurston hits like and the team keeps winning, how can TLR fool with that.

JC: Gordo:

Just curious as what happen to the guy (can't remember his name) the Cards lost in the rule 5 draft. Has he been returned to the Cards, or did he make his new team?

JC
Minneapolis
Jeff Gordon: The Giants waived him and San Diego claimed him.

CardsRedOctober2009: Since Perez will lose his super two eligibility if he is kept in AAA for another month, do you think that will factor into the decision to call him up? How much weight will that be given if Thompson or some other reliever does poorly?
Jeff Gordon: Perez is a late-game hammer. If he pitches well, the team will need that. If Motte also pitches, then it will get tough -- since this team needs a middle man.

Mike: Gordo,

Do you see the young guys on the Blues tiring out throughout the playoffs since they have never played this long before? Maybe not Oshie since he's missed a good chunk of games.
Jeff Gordon: I don't think it will be an issue at this point. They are going 1,000 miles per hour. I'd worry more about old guys who are beat up a bit.

That's is for this week. See you next Monday.

Rich: Jeff, so is Thurston the real thing or a flash in the pan? Where does he fit long term? I like our team one week in.........
Jeff Gordon: I see him as a handy utility guy for some time.
