kevgolf77: I was wondering if anyone in STL has noticed this year's team reminds anyone of the 80's teams with the young talent, speed, and creating runs? Another point is the fact that the pitchers are just pitching and letting the defense do their job behind the staff. Just curious what you and other Cards fans thought.
Jeff Gordon: This team has more speed than the station-to-station teams Tony has generally put on the field, but it has nowhere near Whiteyball speed. But the starting pitchers really do have an idea what they are doing. Wellemeyer needs to take a more economical approach, but the other four guys are buying what Dave Duncan is selling.
matt MVP stroehms: howdy Gordo,
I was wondering what the reason that pitchers all of a sudden lose velocity. IE: Zito, yes he never threw that hard but when he's barely hitting 84 on the gun now, somethings wrong. Another example: Matt Morris. Used to threw 93-94 for us, even threw 91-92 last year. this year: 87. Another: Tim Hudson usually throws in the low 90s but for some reason in one start he was down in the mid-80s. This intrigued me and was curious.
thanks,
Matt
Jeff Gordon: Sinple wear and tear. Shoulders wear out. Overhand throwing is an unnatural motion for the body. No amount of weight training protect a pitcher from lost power. Some guys lose it sooner than others . . . and a few guys, like Ryan and Clemens, remain strong their whole career.
Pitchers can ease the load on their shoulder with good leg drive and clean mechanics, but, again, there is no sure way to prevent velocity loss.
Catman: Hi Gordo,
Is Reyes' demotion to Memphis just another way of saying "trade bait"? He'll have a chance to start regularly and probably produce great numbers.
With Colby Rasmus obviously in the Cardinal's future, who will be the unfortunate Cardinal outfielder who will be on the trading block? I certainly want to keep Ankiel and Schumaker is just too darn good to toss away. He's a solid leadoff man and his defense is superb. We need Ludwick's RH stick and he too plays pretty good in the outfield. It seems that Chris Duncan would be the odd man out. Who do you think will depart upon Rasmus' arrival? THANK!
Jeff Gordon: This could go a lot of ways. Reyes is obviously the odd man out, since he didn't take to his relief role as well as M
Wes: Hey Gordo.
Are the Cardinals currently looking at anything in the trade market? Like another power bat? Heard any possible names?
Thanks. I think we need another big bat behind Pujols...
Jeff Gordon: John Mozeliak notes that the trade mart picks up in June, when teams are vetter defined. At 20-12, the Cards are no hurry to do anything. Their pitching surplus hasn't developed yet and their platoon offense is working.
Dave Cobler: Hey Gordo:
Yeah, we won this series with the Cubs but I am still not convinced we can hang with the Cubs over the long haul without more clout backing up Pujols. I still think the lineup needs to be deeper. What do you think Gordo?
THANK YOU Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: The Cards can stay in the hunt with consistent pitching, a deep bullpen and a decent offense. But, yes, Mozeliak will be on the prowl for One Big Move if his pitching surplus materializes and gives him trade leverage.
If it doesn't, then the team will need more from Glaus, especially, since opponents will go out of their way to use lefty pitching against them.
Jim in SW MO: Gordo
Enjoy your work and Thanks for you time. With the Cards in a "rebuilding year", and every win a precious commodity, how long can TLR and the organization continue to rely on Izzy to come in and be the closer? My opinion the closer should be "feared" or at least the opponents should say "We may not pull this one out because they put in (fill in closer's name here) and he is lights out". I don't get this feeling about Izzy and haven't for awhile now. I think many others in the "Cardinal Nation" feel the same way and we all wonder is there an opportunity out there for the Cards to bring up Perez or find someone else to close the door?
Jeff Gordon: Tony went out of his way to praise Izzy Sunday night -- and Jason did make it look easy for a change. I don't know of the closer has to scare foes, but he needs to convert about 90 percent of his opportunities -- since he gets lots of two- and three-run leads and seldom inherits a runner.
G Money: Great start by the Cardinals. Will they be able to keep it up? The pitching is likley to come back down to earth soon. Seems to me the key will be run production by Ankiel, Glaus, Duncan and Ludwick. Is J Mather likely to see time before September?
Do you see Reyes being dealt as more likely now that he will be starting at Memphis?
Jeff Gordon: Reyes has been on the block since the end of last season, realistically. For now, he offers insurance while the Cards wait for other teams to develop pitching needs. At the moment, the Cards could only hope to fetch a so-so prospect for him.
You're right about the offense; a lot of guys have to step up. As for Mather, the Cards have five productive outfielders and Rasmus on the way. Mather would be a good bet for September, since he can play multiple position and add some righthanded pop.
Tackleberry: Gordo,
I think that LaRussa and Duncan need to recognize what it is they have with Izzy this year and react accordingly. Izzy still is the guy that most people want to see on the mound when the Cards are three outs away from a win in a one-run game, but the truth is that he no longer has the stamina to throw multiple days in a row. There needs to contingency plan for save situations where the club has a 2 or 3 run lead, whether it is Franklin or McClellan, whoever. But someone needs to fill the gap so Izzy is not pitching as often. Then after this season it might be time to face the music.
Jeff Gordon: Pitching three out of five games is about right for Izzy. Too little work causes him to lose command, but pitching three or four nights in a row is asking too much. Either Franklin or McClellan would be alternatives if the Cards get a bunch of save opportunities in a row.
Ryan: Do you think LaRussa will stick with Kennedy-Miles-Ryan in the 2 hole ahead of Pujols? I like the way it's worked out so far, and having a little more pop deeper into the lineup behind Pujols seems logical as well.
Jeff Gordon: As we saw again Sunday night, Kennedy in the No. 2 hole against a RH starting pitcher really works well. Adam runs well and the Cards need a heavy hitter like Duncan in the No. 6 slot. And I would use Ryan in that role against lefties, with Ludwick hitting sixth.
I think TLR found something to like.
Hang Time: Jeff, what can we expect from Saunders? How much "freedom" to game plan, make half time adjustments, and actually "lead" the offense will he be given? Linehan and Olson just couldn't get the job done. I hope that the offense becomes "Saunder's Offense" and Linehan continues to exercise good judgment by handling the keys and the pink slip over to Saunders. Under Linehan, the team has lacked chemistry and has UNDER_ACHIEVED to a fault. How will the play-calling and game planning change this season? What is Saunders' coaching style like? Is he authoritarian? Does he bond well with players?
Jeff Gordon: Al got no freedom in Washington. Here, he will have a LOT of latitude because he has proven capable of maximizing a power running back. Scott is more inclined to control the ball and Al's work in KC proved he can lean that way while still upgrading the passing game.
Look for the run to set up more vertical passing this year.
Mathew: Jeff,
Could we see a trade in the not too distant future where Colby Rasmus and Reyes are dealt? It appears to me that our outfield situation would enable us to deal Rasmus for a middle infield prospect.
Jeff Gordon: Given the strong play of Schumaker and Ankiel -- not to mention Ludwick and Barton --Mozeliak might be more open to dealing Rasmus if he got an extraordinary offer. You never say never in baseball. But there are more likely scenarios.
As for Reyes, he doesn't have much trade value. He would just be a throw-in on a big deal.
Chris: Gordo:
Thanks for taking the time, as always!
My question is about the RAMS 3rd string QB - currently listed as Brock Berlin. Any inside info on whether the coaching staff has plans to look at other options? Either an undrafted rookie or perhaps one of the QBs bound to be released by the Bucs (unless they are planning to go into 2008 with 7 QBs on the roster)?
Jeff Gordon: There will be a LOT of veteran options for the third QB slot. The Rams need to consider them all. They need four QBs for camp and they need a more viable option than Berlin, given Green's concussion history. Tampa Bay has six QBs in the mix -- and that can't last much longer.
The market for QBs is still sorting itself out.
donald s box: donald box: Hey gordo just a few lines on tony larusso. This man is not good with handling young players, barton for one. Don;t play for weeks, and when he do play he can;t wait to get him out of the line up. Mccllen has been used to much last night he looked tired. Reyes another player who was pitching pretty good, then he sets for ever and lose his sharpness. Glaus isn;t hitting his weight, and hurting Albert by causing teams walk him. But he steal plays. Duncan the same thing not performing, but still playing. Put ryan and barton in the line up and lets see what they can do. They hit against right and left hand pitchers in the minors, why not in the majors.
Jeff Gordon: I agree that Ryan should play more. Unless he proves unsteady at SS, he should get a couple of starts there, plus an occasional start at third, but a few starts at second against LH pitching.
Barton is the No. 5 outfielder and his poor throwing arm makes him a late-inning liability, at least compared to Ludwick, Schumaker and Ankiel.
Francisco Prado: Gordo, thank you for taking my e-mail question. Any word on the Rams signing another defensive lineman for depth or to add competion (specially at DT)? I see DT Grady Jackson is still available.
Jeff Gordon: There is a lot of depth there, especially if Adeyanju plays some on the inside and Wroten stays focused. Ryan and Carriker are the cornerstones inside and Glover mixes in.
RCJ: Question: The big topic for the Cards right now is the Mulder situation. When his rehab is done, does he get inserted back in the rotation or reassigned etc. Heres what I want to know, why can't they do the same with him that they did with Morris and that I've heard suggested they do with Carp: bring Mulder out of the pen in relief? That way you don't instantly disrupt an effective rotation while at the same time providing an arm that could factor in in case of emergency or better performance. It would have worked well last night. Wellemeyer pitched fine, but his count ran into the 90's after 5 innings. At that point you can insert Mulder for 3 or 4 innings of work. What about it?
Jeff Gordon: Mark's 30-day rehab assignment is about up, so a decision must be made. It's always possible to use Mulder in long relief at first, but I'm sure the team would rather send him back to extended spring training to keep his pitch counts up in simulated games.
Shoulder strength is not he issue now. It's sharpness and mechanics.
RCJ: I know people throw out crazy trade ideas all the time but I want to know what our options are and what we're targeting. I'd like to see Griffey in our outfield and behind Pujols in the lineup. From what I know, the Reds would like to unload the salary and open up a spot for Bruce (I don't keep up that close with them so don't crucify me if he's injured right now). Would a Reyes/Duncan or Reyes/Ludwick for Griffey be logical? Would we even wwant that? Hae I officially become THAT guy, the one who throws out the dumbest lopsided Glaus for A Rod style trade?
Jeff Gordon: Griffey has resisted moves in the past. And now the Reds have an owner looking to win ASAP and a new GM, Jocketty, charged with making that happen.
Reyes has no value to the Reds, who have dynamic young pitching and Homer Bailey in the wings. Duncan would be a poor man's Adam Dunn. Ludwick is just a guy, no trade value.
Bucky: Jeff,
The Rams were ready to spend their first round pick on Jake Long. They said they would have spent their second round pick on Sam Baker but he was selected in Round 1. They then picked John Greco in Round 3.
Is Pace's rehab going badly? Are they down on Barron? It seems strange that they regarded gettin a tackle as a priority bud now it doesn't appear to be so.
Jeff Gordon: Pace's rehab has gone fine, but there is no guarantee that he will stay healthy. Given his age and recent injury history, the team wants insurance.
Barron will go one of two ways: He will excel this year and make himself the heir to O.P.'s left tackle post . . . or he will play his way out of town. Either way, the Rams wanted another young tackle in line to step in.
Ben: Dear jeff,
How long can we keep rotating 5 outfielders through 3 spots? All these guys deserve to start and I hate to see Barton twiddle his thumbs on the bench. Any chance we could package one of these guys once we get some pitching back around the All Star Break for someone to hit behind Pujols? Or heck, I'd take a prospect, I love prospects.
Ben
Jeff Gordon: You can keep five guys pretty busy. The Cards will have some DH opportunities coming up and somebody is bound to pull a muscle at some point.
Barton is the odd man out now, given his lack of power and throwing arm. But he handles his part-time role very well, so I see the five OFs as a strength and not a problem.
NIUcardsfan: Mike Parisi is up and Anthony Reyes is down. It's been suspected that Parisi might get the start tonight because Pineiro is having some back issues.
However, it's also worth noting that Jaime Garcia was promoted to AAA, PJ Walters, Jess Todd and Tyler Herron were promoted to AA.
It seems to me like something else is going on. Is a trade being prepared? Perhaps a team is interested in Reyes and wanted to see him get a start.
What are your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: We know coming into the season that the Cards had prospects stacked up, with near-term guys at the Class AA level and good prospects at the Class A level. This is all part of the surplus "Mo" could deal from at some point.
Parisi is here because he can start. If the Cards don't need him tonight, he could return to Memphis and make room for a true reliever.
Garcia's ascension is interesting because he is the best starting prospect on the horizon. If he succeeds at Memphis, then he will quickly move to the front burner even as the Cards get veterans back.
At some point, something has to give. But the good news is this: The Cards have about twice as much pitching as they had at this point last year, even with all the injuries.
B-Ball Fan: Forget my earlier question as I did not know Reyes had been sent down Sunday. Who would get the emergency start tonight if Pienero has back spasms and Wainwright can't go Wednesday night ? Bullpen by committe game or could McClellan start Wednesday after throwing last night ?
Jeff Gordon: Parisi is line to start if Joel's back flares up. Or he could hang around and back up Wainwright. There is no need to push either guy right now.
If the Cards had to DL a hurler, there would be other options at Memphis.
Tim: Hey there Jeff,
Do you know which teams have looked into making a trade for Reyes? And how badly has his trade value diminished with his demotion to AAA?
Jeff Gordon: Any deal for Reyes now would be minor. If he throws well at Memphis as a starter, that would help his stock a bit -- but I don't see many teams dealing for Anthony right now and putting him in the rotation. Another team might want to take a shot at turning him around with a different pitching coach.
Mr. Obvious: Mr. Gordon,
My wife met Mr. Bulger Saturday night at the fundraiser, while sitting down to dinner my wife asked him for a dinner roll from across the room, he tried to get it to her but could only throw it about 25 yards?
Go Cards!
Jeff Gordon: Everybody's a comic . . .
Aron: Any chance the rams sign anymore free agents, we are awfully thin at LB and SS.
Jeff Gordon: The team is pretty set, although a few veterans always hit the waiver wire in June. I agree that more depth is needed at safety, in particular.
Ryan Judd: Could you comment on the problem our hitters have with runners on base. We have really patient at bats at certain points in the game and lead the league in walks, however, we seem to have 10 LOB a game and poor at bats in key spots. Numerous times we have scored early and haven't been able to score the knockout blow against a pitcher on the ropes.
Also what shoud we do with our lineup behind Pujols, he has reached base 73 times via hit, walk, hbp and has 18 runs scored, so he has only been driven in 12 out of 67 times. This issue seems to be a glaring weakness. I appreciate the time.
Ryan Judd
Jeff Gordon: I wrote about this a few columns back. The Cards are fabulous at getting on base, but their inability to get more big hits is vexing. This team has enough pitching to stay in the hunt all summer -- but to actually reach the postseason, they must find some clutch hitting.
It's no wonder that fans keep begging for another impact bat . . .
Will Patterson: The Cards need another bat against left handed pithching. Michael Young would be a great fit. Izturis is not cutting it, and if you look at his career numbers there is not much hope for improvment. Do the Cards have enough to get Young? Do they have enough to get him, and have Texas eat some of the contract?
Jeff Gordon: The top Rangers prospect is a SS, so that team might be willing to make a move with Young some day. At a glance, this seems appealing. Young would be an impact bat at a position that currently generates little offense.
How well (or poorly) Ryan plays at shortstop will have some impact in this.
Ron Phillips: Isringhausen has had his ups and downs since joining the Cardinals. Izzy is in his late 30's. What would you think about when Carpenter and Mulder return of this possible situation: Starting pitchers: 1.Carpenter
2. Lohse
3. Mulder
4.Looper
5. Pineiro
Then move Wainwright to the closer. I know Wainwright is good for 15 or more wins as a starter. As a closer, he could be good for at least 40 or more saves. He did not do too bad as the closer during the 2006 playoffs. The Cardinals have good set up men and if the starters can go at least six innings, Wainwright could close the win. I wondered what you thought.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Wainwright ought to stay in the rotation and remain the staff ace. There are other candidates to replace Izzy when that time comes. As for the rotation IF Carpenter and Mulder both return this year, Looper would face an uphill fight to stay in.
Lucky Louie: Hello Jeff, Brian caused quit a stir this weekend with the article on Leanord Little. I am interested in your perspective. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: It was an interesting perspective. Our society gives second chance and let's hope Leonard makes the most of it. But I don't blame those fans who believe the team should have traded him and moved on.
Rich (Sun Valley, ID): Thanks for taking the question, Gordo. Among the many bright spots in the Cardinals this year, I have one concern and two questions. Is what we are seeing from Troy Glaus merely the difficulty in transitioning from one league to another or do you see something more profound? And why, dear God, WHY can't Rick Ankiel be patient! He had two pathetic first swing pop-ups on the infield yesterday in important situations. OK, that was 2 questions-mea cupla.
Jeff Gordon: Rick is still learning. I don't mind his aggression because he can hit the ball 500 feet. He just has to realize what pitchers are trying to do to him. We'll know more about him after 500 ABs this year.
Troy is a .260-type hitter capable to producing runs. He was coming around nicely until the Cubs series. As Tony said last night, he helped with his glove against Chicago. But if he is streaky and Ankiel is streaky, Pujols will keep getting walked.
Mike: Greetings Gordo!
Thanks for taking my question. What is your read on the Mulder situation, do you feel that they will try to send him to extended spring training to buy some time with the rotation? It seems that TLR & Mo's recent comments imply that this may be the case.
As always you take on the situation is appreciated.
Mike
Jeff Gordon: That would be prudent, especially since the Cards already have more pitching than they need.
Dave S.: Hi Jeff - I am a long distance Cards fan stationed in the Washington, DC area. My question is what do you think they will do when Mulder is ready? Will they sit Looper or Wellmeyer, something else? What are your thoughts. Thank you very much.
Jeff Gordon: Let's see what happens the next two or three weeks while Mulder keeps working. Players tend to make these decisions for management. Right now, Wellemeyer is on the bubble, but he'll get more chances.
Ken Wilson: Hey Jeff,
What is it going to take for TLR and Duncan to consider replacing Izzy as the closer. Sure, he had a 1-2-3 ninth last night but long term Izzy is on his way out. Why not give Perez, Molte, or Worrell as chance to eventually become the closer. These 2008 Cardinals are great but I don't believe good enough to give away games.
Jeff Gordon: It would take a LOT for Tony to move away from Izzy. And if he did, I see him going with a veteran like Franklin rather than a kid. The guys you mention will work their way in as set-up guys and then graduate.
Ken Wilson: Hey Jeff,
How is the recent use of Kennedy or Ryan in the two hole being viewed? Also, based on performance so far, do you see a short and long term fix for the Cardinals clean up hitter issues?
Jeff Gordon: Kennedy's bench time was a topic at the park Sunday, given his strong play this season. I can see Ryan getting ABs, but at Adam's expense? Really?
Scott Looney: The hostile reaction Jason Isringhausen gets is unbelievable. It seems a part of our fan base is not as knowledgeable as given credit for. Here is a guy who, although gets into periodic funks, nails down win after win and consistently ranks as a top closer in the NL.
I don't think his contribution to this team will ever be truly appreciated. One look at the goofs posing as closers in the NL central should make us grateful.
Jeff Gordon: Like. say. Eric Gagner? Or poor Kerry Wood?
Dustin: The Chat Man,
Is tonite the night we know what Mulder's status is? I figured J-Mo would make an appearance in Memphis to make the final decision.
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: How he does -- and how he feels -- will dictate the next move. But he would have to be awesome to come back to the Cards right now. I'm guessing he'll head back to Jupiter and pitch two or three simulated games.
Keith Maxfield: Aloha, thanks for keeping a Saint Louisan living in Hawaii up to date on the Cardinals. Haven't seen anything lately on Matt Clement. Is there a problem more than strengthening his arm? Seems arm strength shouldn't take that long to improve.
Jeff Gordon: He won't be a Cardinal until he relocates his fastball. If he never finds it, he won't pitch here. The Cards have too many other guys.
Lucky Louie: How would you rate the Rams draft. I know that we sould all wait 3 years to pass judgement but I think opinions from people around the Rams all the time are relevant. Personally, I am so happy with Long as the 1st pick. I am not a Raiders fan but I have always liked Howie Long and he is the only guy on ESPN I can stand to listen too. I loved seeing him and his son standing together at the draft in Rams hats. Great PR pick and I expect Chris in camp on time. I think Chris will make all of the nay sayers eat their words--Of course they will all forget what they said by then. I was surprised at the Avery pick at 1st but have since changed my mind. Who cares what Mel Keiper snack thinks.
Jeff Gordon: I'd say this is about a C-plus draft, with the potential to get better if the Avery pick was as good as the Rams believe it was. Long will be fine. I like a front four of Long, Carriker, Ryan and Little, with Glover, Hall and Wroten backing them up.
Matt: With Clement and Mulder having yet to show that they will make it back to the majors or at least pitch effectively, is it wise to try and trade our best starting pitching alternative in Reyes? Mike Parisi pitching in the rotation scares the bejesus out of me.
Also, how long does with La Russa stay with Springer if he continues to pitch ineffectively when Motte and Perez are pitching so well in AAA?
Jeff Gordon: Springer has a great track record, so he will get to pitch his way back into form. If his struggle continues, Wellemeyer would be more likely to move into that role as one of the starters returns.
Is Reyes the best starting alternative now? Maybe, maybe not. If he throws well at Memphis and the Cards develop a need, he could return. But Parisi, Boggs and Garcia are all making their move up the depth chart.
sean: when looking at the defence, it's hard to pinpoint a galring hole. we don't necesserily have allot of playmakers, but everything seems solid. should we expect a middle of the pack defense, maybe beter, or worse? just trying to set my expectations
Jeff Gordon: If Little, Pisa and Hall stay healthy -- and the CB corps does as well -- this could become an above-average D. They Rams will get more done in their base defense and rely less on the gimmicky stuff.
sean: how do u think the oline will hold up if pace goes down, alex starts at left and greco at right tacle?
Jeff Gordon: Greco will need some work. If that scenario happened right away, Gorin might have to play right tackle while the kid keeps learning.
sean: do you think justin king can be our nickle by the end of the year? he was projected to be a first or second rounder next year...
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but can he cover? Speed and skills are great, but a lot of expects panned his coverage skills. He will need work this summer.
sean: dont u think that antonio pittman is running with out instinct, just straight ahead? he had maybe 3 instinctual runs last year that i can think of. if you watch him at ohio state, he was very good at seeing the holes, he just seems like he is too tentative at this level so far.
Jeff Gordon: It's a little tough to judge him on those limited reps. True feature backs like Pittman need some carries to find a rhythm. He flashed skill, but you are right -- he was NOT dynamic on every touch.
sean: shouldnt carricker look quicker than he does on the inside? i love his hand use, but i'd like to see a second move if the first doesn't work, he gets stacked on allot of plays (i like him on runs allot though)
Jeff Gordon: He loaded extra weight to play the nose. Now that Ryan has that job, perhaps he can play lighter and be quicker. We'll see. But I'll agree that he is not a pure penetrator, ala Dorsey, and that he is better against the run.
Dmac: Gordo,
Glaus?...Bench?
Jeff Gordon: Tough weekend at the plate, but come on -- the guy had a nice stretch before the Cubs series.
Gabriel to Snow: Hey Gordo, considering that Al Saunders is possibly less than a year away from being a head coach candidate for the Rams, it has been very hard to locate interveiws or quotes attributable to him. I understand why he would not want to appear to undermine Scotts tenuous grip on the team, & why he would not wish to be percieved as "lobbying" for the position in any way. Having said that, how much weight did Al's voice carry when it came to our draft? Was he a very active participant?
Also, will Holt & other vets be attending the upcoming minicamp?
Lastly, is Youngbloods 85 retired? If not, Long was the first player since Jack that could do it justice. I read that he has chosen Grant's #98, but that is not etched im stone is it?
Jeff Gordon: Long wants to be his own guy, so he is not eager to mimic his dad or another great like Youngblood. That is wise.
I'm eager to see Holt, given all the chatter about his unhappiness. Given the change in offense, he needs to be here.
Al has a strong voice, but Linehan didn't need prodding to upgrade his O-line and WR corps.
Mike: Hey Gordo!
Concerning the Anthony Reyes demotion. As I understand it, Mike Parisi was promoted to provide insurance if Joel Pineiro can't go, and Reyes was struggling and still has an option. Is that accurate? Is there more to the story? Is Parisi just a place holder? A trade in the works perhaps?
Thanks!
Mike from Miami
Jeff Gordon: Parisi is insurance, since he was ready to start Sunday. Longer term, I see the Cards putting a natural reliever in that slot while Reyes concentrates on starting.
Might the Cards trade Reyes? Sure, if another team made an interesting offer. The pitchers are stacking up at Memphis and somebody will have to go at some point.
Kris: Jeff,
Any thoughts on the Cardinals going after Hanley Ramirez. The Cardinals have picked up SS from Florida in the past and this guy would be a perfect long term solution to SS. What do you think it would take? Without giving them Rasums
Jeff Gordon: I would assume Rasmus would have to be part of such a deal. The Marlins would ask for guys like McClellan and Garcia, too. Just look at what they go in the Detroit deal and use that as a guide.
If this team opts to move Ramirez, the bidding would be fierce.
David: Hey Gordo,
In an ideal and semi-realistic world, what would the Cardinals rotation look like after the All-Star break? Also, IF (big IF) everyone gets healthy, what do you see the Cardinals doing with the extra pitching and who might be a trade target if this team is still in contention?
Jeff Gordon: If Mulder and Carpenter came back, the team would likely move Looper or Lohse to a contender. Both are due for new deals this winter. The Cards control Carpenter, Mulder, Wainwright and Pineiro. Those four would be in the ideal rotation, plus the next best hurler not to get traded.
sean: what kind of progress did johnathan wade show last year as a potential contributer?
Jeff Gordon: He's pretty raw. He will still need a big summer of work to earn regular work.
Warren Arnold: Hi Gordo,
I must say that I prefer having Ryan or Kennedy in the 2 spot to help Skip set the table in front of Pujols. I think the only way Albert will get any protection from the 4 spot is if someone puts up solid number week after week, and then maybe in July other clubs begin respecting someone enough to tempt fate with Albert.
That being said, doesn't having a contact bat in the 2 spot necessitate moving the pitcher back to 9? It's happened a couple of times where we need to score later in the game and we have three leadoff type hitters scheduled and we cant push one across.
Jeff Gordon: I'd like to see Ryan hitting ninth, Skippy leading off and either Kennedy or Miles hitting second. That could set up a light inning late in the game, but they would get pitched to with Albert looming.
Jase M: Is there any chance Bryan Anderson will see the Majors with the Cardinals? I think he would help the team better then LaRue. As far as another call up, why Parasi and not Boggs?
Jeff Gordon: Parisi was due to pitch Sunday, so that was a big part of it. Anderson would hit a lot better than LaRue, of course, but he still needs defensive work. And that is what the Cards want out of Molina's back-up.
Now, if Yadier got hurt, Anderson would be an option to play here.
KC: Gordo,
In your opinion, will Mulder have to pitch his way into the rotation, or will they give him more leash because he is a larger investment? Also, is Clement even on the team? What is his timetable?
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: This rotation is fine, so neither Mark or Matt will join it until they are ready. The team rushed Pineiro a bit and we saw what happened. Mark has shown signs of making it back this month, but Clement remains iffy for this season. As long as both guys are healthy, they will keep working until they find their form. Again, there is no rush.
Aron: Is there a developmental QB in the works or are the Rams waiting to draft an future QB in one of the next upcoming draft, Bulger is not getting any younger.
Jeff Gordon: I'd say the Rams would need to find an heir apparent in the next draft. The younger guys kicking around don't look to exciting right now and the most recent draft was thin. The Rams liked Henne but didn't get a shot at him.
sean: did you see iron man???
Jeff Gordon: The other Jeff on "The Sports Edge", Jeff Vernetti, is the Iron Man guy. I'll ask himself tonight at 10 p.m. on KFNS.
Luke: Jeff,
Has Alex Barron reported to the offseason conditioning program yet? If so, did you hear what kind of shape he showed up in? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Burwell saw him earlier this spring and says Barron is in phenomenal shape. Bryan also says the big fella was fired up to make good this season. But we'll see how all this translates.
Alex: Jeff, why do you think we're not stealing as many bags as I think we should be? For example Ankiel is supposed to be 5 tool, but he doesn't seem to attempt any steals. If it's in front of Pujols then I understand, but other than that TLR stills seems reluctant to steal unless it's a hit and run. We have some speed for once, let's use it.
I love your articles, thanks for all the great work!
Alex
Jeff Gordon: Running in front of Albert is an issue, obviously. Ankiel can run, but he isn't a great base stealer. Skip is the same way. Barton can run, but his leg injury cost him some burst. And, again, is he really a great base stealer?
Justin: Jeff,
There has been talk and some speculation about the Rams SS position. Chavous is aging and still missing tackles that are necessary for a successful defense. We drafted Chamberlain and some say he will see some playing time at SS perhaps or he will play Sam or Mike. Have you seen or heard any news on this progression if there is any.. Also, Bartell is in the mix at the position. What do the Rams look at doing in order to utilize him to his fullest potential?
Jeff Gordon: Scott insists that Chamberlain was taken to play LB, not safety. He would only play there in an emergency. So I assume the kid is adding weight, not subtracting it. If King and Wade progress at CB, that would free Bartell to play more safety. But, yes, I think they need another guy.
Bryan: Jeff,
What is your views on the Cards sending a package deal of Reyes and Duncan (possibly someone else instead of Duncan) to the Braves who have already shown interest in Reyes for the 27-year old shortstop Yunel Escobar if the Braves would be willing to deal him?
Jeff Gordon: I can't imagine Reyes has much value, so the package would need a LOT more to fetch a SS. Duncan could have more value in a place in Texas, for obvious reasons.
Andrew: I think that the 5 man rotation is pretty good. I view it as a luxury for manager. My question is to you With all the odd ideas Tony LaRussa has put into use, why doesn't he give the green light for guys Like Pujols, and Ankiel to take a swing on the first pitch when 9 times out of 10 it will be a strike?
Jeff Gordon: Tony was puzzled when Glaus took a lot of first pitches over the weekend. While the Cards want their hitters to grind away at the plate, common sense tells power hitters to attack some first pitches if the hurler likes to start with fastballs. This is one of the great cat-and-mouse games: Pitchers trying to get ahead and hitters trying to work the count. Pitchers want to get ahead and force hitters to swing at THEIR pitches; hitters want to get ahead and then sit on fastballs.
Kevin Weber: Do you think the cardinals are just going to keep barton on the roster for the year and send him down next year to polish up?
Jeff Gordon: If he hits all season, there is no reason to do that. If he accepts his part-time role better than Robinson did, then he can have a long career here. But if he falters, then getting 400 Class AAA at bats could help him next season. But he isn't a kid anymore, so he will get every chance to stick.
ram a man: quick ,trade 2009 1st rdr for isaac before they start playing........AAnyway g man we still need playmakers on d . why not try mcgargle in the middle game 1...if it works we'll be on our way...Trust me, o and 3 and they'll
be some 49er fans around here for awile..........and empty seats till linehan n haslett go!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: McGaricle is another guy, like Culberson, will a chance to make this seeming lack of depth at LB evaporate. It will be an interesting camp for him.
As for Bruce, he's out the door. And if fans follow him into the 49ers camp, that's going to cost them a lot of money to go to the games . . .
Kevin Reynolds: Gordo!
Do you think the Cardinals have enough trade chips to get Hanley Ramirez? If so, do you think we would be willing to part with enough of them to get a young SS of his hitting caliber?
Thanks for the time!!!!
Jeff Gordon: If I'm Florida, I'd ask for Rasmus, Garcia, McClellan, Ryan and Duncan. At least.
I'd be shocked if the Cards could outbid the big teams when Ramirez is auctioned off.
Tackleberry: The Rams schedule would seem to indicate another year of missing the playoffs. With Linehan's contract up after this year, what options would you see this team exploring should the Rams come up short again? In what scenario do you see Linehan returning to the sidelines for '09?
Jeff Gordon: Rosenbloom could extend Linehan if he goes 9-7 or 10-6. Anything less than that would cause a massive fan evacuation if Scott returned.
Mike Bess: What do you think about having Glaus use a lighter bat. It seems he has trouble getting the bat thru the zone, especially on fast balls.
Jeff Gordon: He has a long swing. I think he needs to be more compact with it, versus using a lighter bat.
RCJ: Can you elaborate on the six finger Chris Long story? Both Howie and Chris were born with six fingers? Were they removed? I've never seen it in a photo and I can't get good info from google.
Jeff Gordon: I didn't press Chris on the six finger thing when he was here. We'll do his life story at some point and it will come up.
Greg Gibson: Greetings Jeff...your Q & A work is outstanding! I get the impression that the Cardinals are waiting for Wellemeyer or Looper to stumble badly so the move to the bullpen for one or both is apparent. Fortunately, neither one of these guys is going quietly which means the braintrust will take its time on getting Mulder back. Question...what if these guys keep getting the job done as starters? What then?
Greg
Jeff Gordon: Then the Cards will be forced to make a deal or just let somebody go. So they will make a deal.
Steve: Jeff,
I have no basis for this, but I am convinced that Duncan stays with the team as long as his father is employed with the club. How much, if any, influence do you think his dad's presence has in MO's office? I know MO or anyone else would ever admit to it publicly, but I would think it's in the back of the front office's minds.
Jeff Gordon: Duncan will stay with the team as long as the team needs a LH power hitter. If a deal presented itself to add an impact RH bat, he could depart in the package. Everybody understands the nature of the business.
That's all the questions for now -- see you next time!
Kevin Reynolds: Ramirez follow-up...Thanks for answering my question! What if you replace Rasmus with Bryan Anderson in that deal and McClellan with Motte or Perez? I would be willing to make that deal if it meant getting Ramirez long-term...Anderson won't start for us and I'm willing to give Motte or Perez with the remaining one as our future closer...maybe...Hate giving Garcia...but we gotta' get a long-term SS solution AND impact bat to protect Pujols...Ramirez solves 2 problems at once...
THANKS!
Jeff Gordon: Every team in the majors with money would covet Ramirez. It will take elite prospects, not good ones, to make a deal.
