karmon: Afternoon Gordo, I have been trying to do my best to keep a positive outlook for the Cards season and giving the benefit of the doubt to the front office, but it is becoming more difficult each day. Some of the moves that have been made just don't seems to makes sense to me. 1. TLR has kept a short bench almost all year for more arms in the bull pen, then we send down a reliver who has done rather well to be replaced by a rookie who has never threw a pitch in the majors. 2. After we lose an arm in the starting rotation, then he is replaced by a position player, which I agree with but what happened to TLR's logic of more arms in the bull pen. Then I read in one of your other columns that MO thinks he is in a good place. He said from the newspaper articles that he read he thought they were in last place instead of tied for first. Don't he get it, it is not where we are but were we might have been had we had some more offensive power in the line up, but NO here we are still scoring 3 or less runs with no help on the way. Is the powers to be ranking our younger players higher than what they really are or are they that good that we are not giving them up to acquire any help and giving up on trying to find some one for the rest of this yr. We are so unbalanced, Fri. nights lineup had three rookies in there and then all we had on the bench to pinch hit were left handed batters except for La Rue and since he is the back up catcher he is useless until he is needed to replace Yodi. I have already spent over a $100.00 on a ball game and am coming back in a couple of weeks but it will be the last one this yr. Just can't take it any more. Sorry but had to vent some frustration. I may be joining K. Greene in the near future. Please give me some good news we have something in the making before that happens.
Jeff Gordon: The offensive imbalance has been an issue all season. This team needs another right-handed bat, preferrably a third baeman.

Now that the team has fallen into an offensive rut, yes, this need must be addressed. But . . . John Mozeliak no longer has a pitching surplus to deal from, with Lohse injured and Wellemeyer struggling, and guys like Duncan, Ankiel and Ludwick aren't looking attractive to other teams these days.

There isn't a magic wand there. Mo's best bet might be to eat some salary, as he did with K. Greene, and hope to turn around one of the struggling 3B-men.

If Duncan, Ankiel and Ludwick are all finished as run producers, though, then Mozeliak won't be able to fix this offense. That would be too much to overcome.

stevew: Hi Jeff,

I remember Hal Smith, Lindy and Von, Julian, Larry Jackson, etc. I've been a Cardinal fan all my life. But I have never seen a whole team (except Albert) go into such a slump as this team, for this long, unless they have either lost respect for the manager, or something is wrong with the chemistry. Is there?
I have also grown tired of the novelty of Larussa of changing the lineup and where the players play EVERY SINGLE DAY. Could this be a problem?
thanks for your answers.
Jeff Gordon: You can play a guy every single day and watch him rack up 0-for-4s. Then the guy is buried deeper. You can question the player rotation when everybody hits, but not when there is a struggle. At this point, Tony is trying to create favorable match-ups for each guy.

When five or six veterans tank at once, there isn't much a manager can do.

The chemistry was great in April when everybody was hitting, so that is not an excuse.

John Bruce: Ryan Spilborghs is RH---it wouldn't take a lot to get him. Can he help and are the Cards interested?
Jeff Gordon: Interesting question. The Rockies have found some outfielders, eh? And this guy would help the mix more than, say, Chris Duncan right now.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

Why is it that the Cardinals pitching is very veteran-heavy, especially at the back end of the rotation, while they were very willing to plug in "unprovens" all over the line-up? For example, if they had spent the $4.5 million they are paying Wellemeyer, on a veteran 2nd basemen or a proven outfielder would they be in a different position? Injuries helped the front office casually write-off the dip in May, but this team is healthy and their lack of offense is concerning.
Jeff Gordon: Schumaker keeps doing the job at second base, so he is the least of the team's issues. And the unproven OF, Rasmus, is outperforming the proven ones.

The Cards spent 18 million on proven third baseman Troy Glaus and shortstop Khalil Greene this year. Fortunately an unproven guy like Tyler Greene appears ready to help.

dub the beachcomber: jeff, in the words of carl the greenskeeper, "this team seems to be acting a little psychotically lately." lots of peaks and valleys. is there some unrest in the clubhouse, or some kind of non baseball problem? perhaps they are afraid that the front office will let them down again in their time of need?
Jeff Gordon: When you have a half dozen guys failing at once, the mood sours in a hurry. That could change overnight if these same half-dozen guys work out of their slumps.

As for potential changes, some of these Cards waiting for the front office to wave the magic wand should be the first to go when changes are made.

Brianbase: Can you give us your honest opinion on the willingness of the Cards FO and owners to do what is needed to win? Are they (in your opinion) content to not spend as long as we continue to put 3 million in the stands? What is the real story.
Jeff Gordon: The real story the last two years has been the huge money spent on guys not playing. Last year it was Mulder and Carpenter. This it's Glaus and Greene ($18 million) -- plus Mulder and Kennedy, who got a combined $5.5 million to go away.

The ownership bucked up to retain players who performed well last season. But Ludwick, Ankiel and Wellemeyer, in particular, have taken huge steps backward. Molina has quit producing runs, too.

Lohse, who got the big money, is hurt.

Once again, this team has tens of millions of YOUR MONEY invested in disabled, slumping or departed players.

DisCard: Either I've been watching the Cards too much or that new show Mental, because I'm wondering if deep down inside, Ankiel doesn't want to have a weak year. He hasn't had much stability in his life. He grew up here in Florida and his difficulties started a long time before being chosen by St. Louis. Maybe part of him feels that with the current Dollar Store menatality, a good year would price him right out of St. Louis.

It seems to me that when you consider the unique pressure Chris Duncan feels, Greene's situation and Ankiel's, not much foresight is being exercised on the non-physical side of the game. What are your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: If Ankiel can't handle success, he should retire. If Khalil can't handle failure, he should retire. If Duncan can't play here -- which increasingly appears to be the case, for many reasons -- then the club should do him a favor and move him along.

Clearly change is in order.

Bob: Gordo,
I don't think any of us - TLR included - can take much more of what we've seen the last 5 weeks from the Cardinals team.

What, if anything, is going to move management to make something happen? Something needs to shake this team up to get it playing some decent ball again.
Jeff Gordon: Tony's job -- and the coaching staff's job -- is to keep players performing to their statistical norm as consistently as possible. This is a huge challenge, as we're seeing this year.

The Cards aren't slumping because they aren't good enough. They are slumping because several "proven" players, guys who got nice raises this year, are all failing at once.

Some of these guys are TLR favorites. Tony's task is to get four or five of these guys out of the tank. These are the same players who tore up the NL in April.

Once several guys are back out of the tank, then the Cards will be in a much better position to reconfigure the team as needed.

DisCard: I’m on record endorsing a strong farm system & believing the current talent is improved. That said, the Cards appear to have stocked up on 3rd basemen and top of the order outfielders. There are virtually no RBI guys who don’t play 3rd. There is little effective left-handed pitching and no top of the rotation guys. None of the middle infielders would scare you with a bat in their hands. Aside from the now in decline Mr. Anderson, not much is noteworthy among the catchers. Some of these positions look better in A ball, but that’s a long way from Busch. The combined record of the 4 minor league clubs is below .500.

Jocketty’s regime, classed as non-developing by ownership, produced Pujols, Molina, Duncan, Schumaker, and Ankiel, plus the departed Adam Kennedy & J D Drew. On the pitching side, Thompson, McClellan, Boggs and Motte were acquired under Jocketty not to mention Looper & Matt Morris. It’s true many were traded, but look at the return. I also just reviewed the drafts 2005-2008 and it’s clear that pitching is especially hard to identify beyond the first dozen or so choices, so Jocketty had and early edge in where they picked.

There is a question to all of this. Where’s the beef from the new regime? How many drafts does it take to find one pitcher capable of being on a major league roster? How long a leash does Ludhow get? Finally, why do the successfully developed players lack balance position-wise? Every team has unfilled holes, but this looks more like Swiss Cheese.
Jeff Gordon: Since the great shift 2005, the Cards have produced Rasmus, T. Greene, Chris Perez, Stavinoha, Boggs, S. Robinson, Todd, Mortensen, Garcia, Wallace . . . really, it's a nice group, as noted elsewhere on this site.

The grousing about Luhnow will diminish as more of these guys play a bigger role.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

While you P-D colleague Rick Hummel is very well respected, by myself especially, I did have a good laugh when I read his article on Rick Ankiel in Sunday's paper. I guess when the skies are dark black you appreciate even a little speck of grey, but most of Ankiel's hits came when the game was well decided and the hits were singular contributions in each game. Just seemed like a reach to me, I can't imagine those paying his salary feel like they are getting their money's worth?
Jeff Gordon: Hey, compared to Ludwick and Duncan, Ankiel is on fire. He has made progress, but Sunday reminded us that he still isn't the player he was last year.

Mr .B: MO IS A NO GO
The Cardinals under the current regime will tell you what you want to hear but fail to pull the trigger. I long for the moves of Walt Jockety who new the pulse of baseball and made a TIMELY trade that helped the cause. Mo doesn't have that knowledge or power to sell it to DeWitt. De Witt shows him a map of 9 states and 3 million plus every year attendance and advises him to go back to his office and play solataire on the computer. We don't make the timely trade, and we draft according to $$$$$. Pete Kozma. Give me a break, guys like him are available in the 10th round.
Jeff Gordon: Walt did a great job, for sure. Mozeliak has a different style. Just as it took Walt time to build the team he wanted, it will take Mozeliak a little time.

I'd argue that this is a pretty good team in a real deep slump, but time will tell. I look at the Cubs and I see the same thing. That team is driving Piniella nuts, but I would expect them to catch fire at some point, make a few moves to improve and get there at the end.

Fans savaged Mozeliak for refusing to trade Rasmus last season. Now Colby is fast becoming the team's top outfielder.

BillP: Hey Jeff, Okay, I'm going to be stubborn here and stick with the Pens to pull it off. Malkin and Crosby have been tearing it up at home during the playoffs, producing far more points at home than on the road. The luxury of having the last line change at home has made a big difference for Pittsburgh here. Provided they come back and win in game 6, what do you see as being key for them to come out and win that road game in Detroit to win the series? Thanks and Have a goode week !
Jeff Gordon: If they get to a Game 7, then they have to sustain pressure and break Osgood. If they don't sustain pressure from the opening face-off on, the Red Wings will gain control of the puck, roll their lines and wear down Pittsburgh will all that skill.

dub the beachcomber: gordo, when a team encounters a prolonged offensive slump like the cards currently suffer, what measures can management, tlr and front office, try? i notice that the pirates traded one of their best players and then swept the mets. is something like that in the offing? it is clear that moe must do something, will it be a minor or major trade? thanks for the scoop.
Jeff Gordon: The Pirates have been horrible forever. That club traded a good player for so-so prospects when waiting would have yielded a better return. That is how NOT to run a team.

dub the beachcomber: watching sunday's game once again we see a team walk albert to pitch to the cleanup batter, this time ankiel. even though ludwick is not hitting very well, isn't he worth playing for the psychological effect. in other words, do you agree that ludwick's reputation as an all star slugger helps protect albert better than a lesser known player that may be outhitting ludwick presently? i question why tony keeps sitting luddy and allowing opponents to pitch around pujols? if we acquire someone like holliday, will tlr sit him as well? it seems illogical that tony keeps asking for an impact bat, when the one he has is on the bench. thanks gordo.
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick has been awful at the plate since returning from the DL. If TLR sends him out to fail game after game, then he could really bury the guy.

This goes to show how hard it is to manage a team with so many slumping players.

dub the beachcomber: it seems that as soon as the team scores a run or two, they can't get past this psychological wall they encounter. if you were tony, what would you do to fix this? thank gordo
Jeff Gordon: The Cards are trying to score a run at a time to give their pitchers a lead to work with. They have scraped a few wins out that way. But . . . the psychology won't change until the Cards run into a pitcher having a bad night and everybody gets well at once.

This weekend the Rockies OFs are diving around, taking away hits . . . and the frustration mounts.

Through this, the team will learn which players it should build around and which guys are just guys.

murrowboy2: the cards are not a full-fledged contender, based on what i consider to be so-so performers or worse....except for 1st base, catcher, and one pitcher. the farm system has been hyped for a year or two as a great work-in progress.
how strong really is the farm system--compared with other teams???
Jeff Gordon: How good are Rasmus, T. Greene, Perez, Motte, McClellan, Boggs and Mortensen? When we can answer that question, for sure, we'll know.

It's safe to say that not many contenders have used this many rookies the past two years. The depth is good. As TLR notes, though, how many of these guys can you really build upon?

Janet: When is TLR going to stop platooning the OF? Is Rasmus ever going to be playing every day, or will he be traded?
Jeff Gordon: When guys hit, they will play. Colby has made real progress. He appears to be their best OF right now. But . . . it's not like he is batting .320.

Tony has done a nice job keeping everybody busy. If he could get three guys hitting at once. I'm guessing that those three guys would get almost all the ABs.

Squiggy: Do you really believe all the shameless management apologizing you do? Or is it just your job? At least Strauss and Bernie are objective even if they do support their teams most of the time. I doubt you'll answer my question, but thanks for doing these chats with the fans. It takes courage after the stuff you write.
Jeff Gordon: Look, this team needs some change and I've written that, again and again. But I don't think Mozeliak needs to blow up the team or change directions. He needs to be smarter than that.

Previous Blues regimes made lots of changes and spent lots of money on free agency and never won anything, due to inconsistent player development. The new regime is strong enough to stay the course.

The Cards should do the same. I didn't want the team to trade Rasmus and that stance looks OK now. I wanted the team to keep Perez and that is working out, too.

It's easy to demand trades when a team is slumping, but it is easy to make terrible deals while trading from weakness. Why not get your half-dozen disappointing veteran players going first, then deal from strength?

Dale: I have not seen anything like this since the mid 70s or late 80s , have you heard anything about a trade to up grade this team this is depressing throw us a bread crumb please thanks have a great week
Jeff Gordon: This is not the first slump the team has had. Nor will it be the last.

This is not the worst team since those terrible eras of Cards baseball. Settle down.

airgunner: Everybody keeps talking about the need to bring in a "booster Shot" for our slumping offense. Look back over the last 3 years. It shows proof that TLR cannot manage this team. He has many 7 game losing streaks over the last 3 years. He taxes the bullpen when he doesnt need to, and doesnt let them just finish it out when its a blowout. He will use every pitcher in the pen that's available when we're down by 7 runs. When is everybody in st louis sports media going to buck up and question TLR. Teams have fired managers for a lot less then this mess TLR is creating in ST Louis sports. e out manages Himself. When are the questions going to come about how he manages this team rather than about the players only. He has had so many lineup changes that nobody except Pujols knows where they are batting in the order to get ny comfort at a spot. And why is Ludwick getting less playing time than Chris Duncan who everytime a ball is hit to him we all hold our breath at what he is going to do. My question is is when do you start questioning the Manager? Every press conference is about the player. When is TLR going on the stand and how long do we have to wait before something is done? He is on the last year of his contract.
Jeff Gordon: Firing La Russa isn't the answer either. I agree that he can overtax the bullpen with extra moves, but, hey, he's won some games as a manager and his success here speaks for itself.

dc1165: Gordo,

Simple question here.... Have you heard anything about Mo possibly being close to a trade or word that a move could happen this week?
Thanks-you da'man!!!
Jeff Gordon: Change has been pretty constant this season. I'd like to see him trade whichever players are whining about the need for a trade. That would fix the atmosphere in a hurry.

akaitori: At some point - soon - the team has to become miracle workers or sellers. The latter is far more likely. By my count the only players that have value are: AP, Carp, Molina, Wainwright, Perez, Motte then fall off drastically Lohse, Franklin, McClelland - farm hands T. Greene, Jones and Wallace - Did I leave out anyone? Which of the above are likely to be shopped? What is the likely return? I've been following the team for 50 years and do not recall such futility. What about you?
Jeff Gordon: I can remember Cards teams being more than two games out. So, no, this is not the time to sell off assets and start over.

Zac, TN: Gordo,

I drove a total 8 hours to St. Louis and back home yesterday. I came to see soem good Cardinal baseball. Well I did not see that. All the way home I felt terrible for making this trip. There has to be something that needs to be done, and quick. First of all, what happened to players doing rehab assignments? Ludwick and Ankiel look like they could not hit water if the fell out of a boat. How about getting our guys off to a start by letting them get some swings in the minors that will hopefully boost there confidence level and be ready for the majors, instead of sticking them straight in the lineup and say go get'em. Another thing is that I praised the front office for putting up a great team this year, but it's time for a move (another bat)! Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Players must agree to do rehab assignments. Ankiel did a few games in Florida. Ludwick seemed ready to return and Memphis was on the road, playing on artificial surface.

In retrospect, both players needed to go out on rehab assignments for several games.

Rich: Greetings Gordo,

Do you see any front runners for the the strong side linebacker position and the cornerback slot opposite Bartell?
Jeff Gordon: Don't rule out Hill at CB (I know, I know) and Draft at LB. The others have a lot to prove yet.

Austin: Gordo,
There are alot of rumors saying that teams dont have the salary to gain any significant players, are the cardinals one of them?, and do you think Tony's wish of a big bat will be granted? if so, with who?

Thanks, Austin
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have the money to spend and the green light to spend. Tony wants a big bat, but is he willing to trade value -- like, say, Wainwright -- to get it?

If you're a GM and the Cards and ask for an all-star caliber hitter, which Card do you ask for? I'm guessing the standard Duncan-Boggs-Anderson and doughnuts offer won't cut it.

rich: Jeff: You touched on this last week or the week before, but was wondering if you have any more insight or details ref. the Card looking at leaving KTRS/550 at the end of the year?
I live 16 miles due east of downtown in O'Fallon, IL. and yesterday afternoon couldn't hardly pick the game up sitting on my deck trying to listen to it over the radio. Hopefully ownership will have seen the error of their ways and go back to KMOX or even the new FM sports station 101.01 wouldn't be bad,
Jeff Gordon: Change seems inevitable in the radio game. The Cards will have some options. The club tried to replace the far-reaching power of KMOX with a more comprehensive network, but gaps are inevitable.

sjd: Mr. Gordon---You are a huge supporter of Mozeliak/Lunhow and how this club is put together. How do you explain in your "corner of cyberspace" why the team has no starting pitching in the minor leagues that is major league worthy accept at the very back end of the rotation? There is very little to offer other than Boggs or an injured Garcia. Also , there is a huge lack of impact hitters in the minors on there way up to St.Louis.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have prospects to support Wainwright, Carpenter in Lohse, who are locked into long-term deals. Boggs, Mortensen, Garcia (in '10, perhaps)and maybe Hawksworth could be 4 or 5s. You are correct, none of these minor leagues project to be top of the rotation guys. Lance Lynn is more of a depth guy and Todd is suited for middle relief.

Perhaps McClellan could finally switch back to starting now that Motte and Perez are panning out. He could be a No. 3 some day, despite what we saw Sunday.

As I noted today -- and noted at the time -- the Cards were foolish to pass on Porcello for economic reasons. Kozma was a pretty uninspired pick. I believe he'll make the big leagues, but he hasn't shown the "plus" offense.

Rasmus will be an impact hitter. Wallace will be an impact hitter. Freese has always hit, including this year at Memphis. If his ankle finally heals, it'll be interesting to see what he does. Jones, as a top of the order guy, ought to play in the big leagues soon.

Mather could still be a power guy, but more as an extra player. Since coming off the DL at Memphis, he has looked more like his old self.

adam.clymer@earthlink.net: Would it make any sense to sign Glavine and offer a pitcher (Pineiro, Wellenmeyer or Boggs) in a trade?
Jeff Gordon: Pineiro and Wellemeyer will have to pitch better to get much in a deal. But, yes, signing a Glavine or a Martinez would make sense right now. It's only money. Put some pressure on the other guys.

dt1962: hey gordo
with cards gm mo just being dewitts puppet, do you really think the cards will actually add an impact player?
Jeff Gordon: Money is not the obstacle. It is dealing impact pitching to get impact hitting that would be the hold-up.

HEG: Gordo I do not know to begin regarding the CARDINALS; first they are in a horrific slump in all aspects of the game; the cards pitchers get smoked when they are ahead in the count, 0-2 or 1-2; they seem to give up more hits & rbi's when they are way ahead in the count & the cardinal hurler's do not make adjustments; they get killed by certain hitters and they keep pitching the same way without making adjustments; the cardinal hitters seem to be doing the same thing; getting themselves out on the same pitches without making adjustments. I put a lot of the blame for this on the coaches but they cannot hit nor pitch for the team. I would suggest they get a lefthander starter thru a trade; maybe package a lefthander hitter and a right hand starter for lefty starter; ex. Ankiel & Wellemeyer and also trade some of their young prospects for power right handed hitter; does any of this make any sense?
Jeff Gordon: That all makes sense. All along, it's been obvious the team lacks right-handed punch without Glaus. That is even more true now with Ludwick struggling.

Fans want to fire McRae and/Aldrete, but they work every day on adjustments. The players need to regain their feel at the plate. Slumps happen, as stars like Jimmy Rollins can tell you. When slumps happen all at once, hitters really get frustrated.

The Cards need to see an opponent:

1) Throw meat.

2) Not make diving and lunging outfield catches.

When that happens, maybe these guys will break out of it.

redbirdswin: What's the inside scoop on Ankiel's outburst at Jorge De la Rosa? Was it exactly what we saw - Ankiel yelling for a fastball and talking trash for no apparent reason? Or did De la Rosa say/do something to set him off? It was a bit shocking to watch, and a bit amateurish on Ankiel's part in my opinion. I still like the guy, but perhaps he should be yelling at himself to learn how to hit an offspeed pitch instead of taking it out on others.
Jeff Gordon: When you're getting beat big in a game, that is no time to get into it with the pitcher. I didn't see the other guy -- who was winless -- doing anything unusual. This was just a case of one very frustrated player boiling over.

RedRedRed: Hey there,

This goes along the idea of a possible trade. Many opinions. OK, so...There are several players, but I'll mention one. Bryan Anderson was a decent prospect, decent avg, needed work on his defense. Still, even two years ago it was clear he wouldn't start for the Cards. How much have he and other prospect been "kept" too long? What do you think is the most reasonable scenario for a possible trade.

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: If there were good offers out there for Anderson two years ago, the Cards should have made the move. Right now he isn't a hot prospect. He needs a T.Greene-like surge to drive up his value. Right now Pagnozzi is hitting well enough to start at Memphis.

Say Florida wants to move Dan Uggla. He is making $5.35 million this season and is due a big long-term deal. He is coming out of an offensive funk. If the Cards offered Ankiel, Perez and either Boggs or Mortensen, perhaps Florida would look at that. Uggla would add heft.

Or maybe Cantu from the Marlins would make more sense.

The Cards will want to deal left-handed hitting, right-handed relief pitching and young starting pitcher for a RH bat at a need position.

redbirdswin: What will it take to keep Colby in the lineup on a regular basis? With this anemic offense, TLR should probably play those who are actually getting hits - and Colby seems like the only OF who's doing that consistently lately.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, he fought out of his first big league slump. His power numbers are trending up and he is producing runs.

Yoknapatawpha: Concerning the recent McLouth trade to the Braves, does such a trade suggest that Mo is asleep at the controls--if the Braves' GM could pull this trade off, why couldn't Mo?
I think Mo is simply over-matched by every other general manager in MLB.
Jeff Gordon: If the Cards needed a center fielder, Mozeliak could have easily topped Atlanta's offer. But this team has three centerfielders.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

It's obvious something needs to be done with this offense. This is beyond a slump and although we are only 2 games out now, it could be 6 games out just like that. We have Albert producing and Carpenter and Wainwright appear healthy for now....knock on wood. The division is there for the taking, and with the exception of the Dodgers, I think the NL is too. Milwaukee and Philly have explosive offenses with questionable pitching. So...my question for you is:

Who are our top 5 trade chips (in order), excluding Rasmus and Wallace? Also, are these chips attractive enough to compel another team to trade with us, or is Luhnow's PR team merely duping us into thinking these guys are going to be something?
Jeff Gordon: I'd trade Rasmus, in a heartbeat, to get Hanley Ramirez. He isn't untouchable. The only guys I don't offer are Albert, Carpenter, Wainwright and Molina.

After those four, I suppose teams would want:

Rasmus.
McClellan.
Perez.
Motte.
Wallace.
D. Jones

Schumaker has to be appealing to some teams. Mortensen and Boggs would have some value, too. So would Franklin, although TLR would have a heart attack if Mo moved him to open a spot for Perez.

But with Ankiel, Ludwick and Duncan all struggling -- and with Lohse hurt -- it's not like Mozeliak has trade leverage.

If K. Greene was playing a producing, the Cards could have moved him to Boston for somebody or something.

If Glaus returns, the Cards might move him as a DH to an AL team.

But it is not like Mo is rejecting great offers left and right because he is love with every last Luhnow draft pick. And it's not like DeWitt won't spend -- but once again, the Cards have a third of their payroll tied up in dead money.

Obes10: Any chance that a stadium for the Rams can be built on the Chrysler site in Fenton? Plenty of space for a stadium and tailgating. Then possibly the MLS next door at soccer park.
Jeff Gordon: That's a OK site, but somebody will have to pay the construction cost.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

What is the outlook for Kyle Lohse? Are they expecting him to resume his turn in the rotation after his 15-day stay on the DL?

Do you think Thompson will be given every chance to fail, or do you see him going back to the long role with Hawksworth, Boggs or Mortensen taking over the spot in the rotation?
Jeff Gordon: At this point, Thompson ought to get every chance to fail -- because Lohse could be sidelined for many weeks.

redbirdswin: What's your impression on the Cards' upcoming draft choice? Will they favor a bat (like Randal Grichuk) or will they look to a lefty pitcher, as mentioned in previous reports?
Jeff Gordon: They have worked out guys before at the last second, then done something else. If one of the two lefties is there, the Cards should grab one and hope for the best.

Sports34: You wrote a good column on the upside of the cards prospects in the minors. Given that talent...If you were the GM would you bundle some of that talent to make a trade for a proven bat or starter, or would you ride out the storm until those players could be counted on at the major leauge level?
Jeff Gordon: Changes are needed immediately. This team has a chance to win. That is why there is so much frustration out there. But . . . dealing right now is tough because so many current Cards are slumping at once. I'd wait until some players broke out again to assess the needs and the market.

Fresno Ram Fan: Hey Gordo,

Any news on potential FA's the Rams might be interested in? Ellis from Dallas would fill a need and add depth even though he is older than what the Rams are looking for. I think a one or two year deal would be ok, your thoughts? Thanks for keeping us out of state Ram fans updated. Go Rams!!!
Jeff Gordon: So far Devaney has passed on a LOT of veterans. The Rams seem serious about rebuilding with younger players now that a leadership core is in place. Never say never, but . . .

Fresno Ram Fan: In your opinion, how do you think Spags is doing as Rams HC. Is he as advertised? Thanks again.
Jeff Gordon: We'll know several games into the season -- and not a minute sooner. The vibe is good now, but what happens once the violence starts?

marpdagn: Hey, Gordo. It seems you have long defended the front office in their wheelings and dealings (or lack thereof) in the past several years. True, MO did bring in KG, but little else since the summertime crash of last year. We continually hear "it's early in the offseason", "it's early in the season". At what point exactly does it not become early? Either one of two things seems certain. Either MO is not up to the task at hand, or he needs to resign if he is simply a puppet whose strings are completely at the whim of BD. When, sir, are you going to wake up and smell the kool aid?
Jeff Gordon: I've called for change. It's never too early to make a trade, especially when the team is struggling. A deal could also take away one of the player excuses for failure.

But, again, making a trade when so many players are slumping at once is tough.

If he put Ankiel up for bidding right now, what would the offers look like? That is an ideal guy to trade, for many reasons, but he can't help teams playing the way he is now.

What team wants Duncan right now? How low is Ludwick's stock?

Riz: Gordo,

I'm wondering why the heck people are going crazy for Pronger. Why would we ever want to trade prospects for an aging guy we can probably pick up next year as a free agent? It's easy for us fans to throw out names like Pietrangelo, Palushaj, Sonne, and Cole as trade bait, but that's because we have no idea what we have in them. Don't you think that the time to discuss trading prospects would be closer to the trade deadline this year (if we're doing well), or next year's offseason with more roster spots opening up?
Jeff Gordon: Trading for Pronger at this point would be dumb. Develop the guys you have and keep climbing.

tone-dog: Gordo: Thanks for your chats. I would suppose that this will not be a happy bunch of comments today!
Here's mine: Do you think Tony has got too much personal interest in Ankiel and Duncan to really see how these two are killing the team? And do you see the Cards-Indians series this weekend as one big audition? Thanks again.
Jeff Gordon: TLR is clamoring for a deal, but Ankiel and Duncan will be high on the list of potential players to move on. If that happens, it will be fun to watch the aftermath.

The Cards need guys to start hitting. That will help the team win AND make trades.

tone-dog: Do you agree with Bernie that morale is going down because there are no moves being made? Is that what you see? Do you think Mo should just make a move for the sake of making a move to get the wolves off of him or do you think he's just working up to a good, sensible move that will help the team and not weaken it? You're 7-10 days of a couple weeks ago are up.
Jeff Gordon: If I'm the GM and I sense certain players are down because of the lack of trading, then those "down" players would be the first guys I'd offer to other teams.

If players blame Mozeliak and DeWitt for their bad at bats, mistake pitches and fielding mishaps, then these are not players you can build around. I would expect the top guys to fight through and the lesser players to follow their lead.

This team is loving because several "proven" players -- guys the franchise rewarded with nice new deals -- are failing at once.

Brett: Hey Gordo! How much should the Cards have available this coming offseason after arb and player raises? I've heard that they have at least $37 million coming off the books and that after raises they will only have about 10-15 million to play with. Considering they still will likely need to go after a RH bat, a SP, and bullpen help, and maybe a short term 3B guy (DeRosa?) will that leave them enough? Thanks as always.
Jeff Gordon: They need to take Glaus' money and give it to Albert on a long-term extension. Promoted players could fill several spots, leaving Mozeliak enough money to address needs again.

Will: Please explain to me why the Cards can't pull off a trade for Matt Holiday. It was my understanding that this is exactly the situation the organization wanted to be in. I thought the idea was to build a young talent base, and then add veterans to fill in the gaps as needed. This team now has several young players who can make significant contributions, but this team needs a proven "big" bat behind Pujols. Wouldn't adding Holiday in the 4 spot let everyone else fall into a more comfortable position in the batting order, in the same way Franklin assuming the closers role allowed the bullpen to settle in. I understand that he would be expensive, but he is expensive because he can produce.
Jeff Gordon: If Holliday was actually having a big year, then I'd get on the bandwagon to acquire him. This guy killed the ball in Colorado, but was ordinary on the road last year. He isn't dominating the AL at Oakland.

Adding an righthanded impact bat at 3B would make more sense.

contentedapollo: Hey Mr.Gordo,
I've been a big fan of the Cardinals ever sense I was born. I've been loyal to them to the point where when I went to college up in Minneapolis, I refused to go to Twins games and watch my beloved Cardinals via computer. This would mean I haven't been to a game in 5 and 1/2 years. My last game was at the old Busch Stadium. I'm going to the Twins game in June to experience the new Busch Stadium and cheer on the Cardinals. I've always believed in them. Except now it looks like they don't believe in their selves. Is there a way you could pass on an encouragement to remind them about playing with heart, playing with will, and skill? And some way make sure everyone gets it? Its just a simple request that could go along way into a disorganized club house right now. I believe they have talent there and would like to see them turn things around. I'm tired of people clawing at their inabilities to perform. It would be much appreciated. One more thing, if they ask who just say an "guy in the outfield" (like Angels in the outfield). Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: This guys have some heart. They are just really, REALLY frustrated.

David: If aquired...would the Cards lock up Matt Holliday? I think Albert would take less to stay here if he has legit protection such as Holliday. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: If the Cards could trade Ankiel or Duncan in a package to get Holliday -- swapping left for right -- and then sign the guy to a reasonable long-term deal, that would make some sense.

But if he wants to hit the lottery based on his home-field numbers in Colorado, I'd rather see the Cards look elsewhere.

Dave Mestdagh: Gord: "MO" keeps saying :only 1 game back" no need to "panic", yada yada yada. At what place in the standings will he realize that you can't compete, even in the Central, with a roster full of prospects, no matter how good they are?
Thanks for your insight
Dave M
Jeff Gordon: If the young guys hit and pitch, you can win with them. Right now the Cards are losing because their veteran guys aren't playing as well as the younger guys.

rbc1: Gordo give us something anything in this, our darkest hour....

Seriously, is going to happen soon to this team to give it a spark, or atleast attempt to? a roster shake up, a trade, hell even, a garbage bin pick up?
Jeff Gordon: Or maybe, just maybe, Ludwick, Ankiel, Molina, Wellemeyer, et al will perform to their '08 level and the team will resume winning.

Jeepster: Jeff: I'll ask again. Care to re-examine your belief that Mozeliak has a clue of how to perform his job? I honestly do not believe the man knows how to initiate trade talk with other general managers. How else would you explain the lack of activity since he's taken the job as GM?
Jeff Gordon: Other than Albert, Carpenter, Wainwright and Molina, which Cardinal players would you, as a rival GM, pay a premium for?

Lohse is hurt. Glaus is hurt. Ankiel can't hit a breaking pitch. Ludwick is slumping. Pineiro is Just a Guy. Duncan cratered after one good month. Boggs might have some value, but TLR doesn't want him at this level, so showcasing him is tough. McClellan just got rocked.

Motte and Perez have real value, but losing either guy would compromise the bullpen.

Making a deal now just to shut people up would be stupid.

socialsitsforobama: please cut through the "veiled speech"....

mr. Dewitt can do whatever he wants with his money, but be honest with fans, if you want to actually be "aggressive" that means getting a deal done and sometimes thinking you might be on the wrong end. There will be many buyers and many sellers, if we arent going to be aggressive in the market, just say so.
Jeff Gordon: Did DeWitt ever promise to be "aggressive" in free agency?

w.champion: Dear Gordo, how do you sleep at night? Is it "spooning" with the Cardinals management? Do you think you will ever have the ability to be an "objective" reporter?
Jeff Gordon: I could call for mass dismissals with the team two games out of the division lead, but I won't. I have repeatedly noted the need for adjustments to this team, but his is NOT a terrible team. It is a pretty good team playing terribly right now.

I stand behind what I write, unlike "w.champion." Now THAT takes courage.

jmfree: Gordo - Who's out there that the Cards could REALISTICALLY get that would benefit the club? We don't need another JAG.
Jeff Gordon: If Florida really wants to move Cantu or Uggla, rather that give them long-term deals, I'd like their bats. Cantu might struggle at third, but he could at least help this team get through the season.

Cleveland is being coy about DeRosa, but that guy would be a great long-term Cardinal.

Atkins is hitting better, so he'd be worth a try at third.

Matt: With the offense struggling and the pitching starting to show signs of fatigue (and possibe overexposure) why is it continuing to take so long to make a deal. I am proponent of not making a deal just to make a deal. It has to be the right deal, but given what has been floated out there, I see a lot of "right" deals to be had, or at least really good fits i.e. DeRosa, Holiday, Beltre. Why has nothing been done yet. Is the front office waiting until they are completely out of contention so they don't have to make a deal at all and give us the whole we will try again vigorously next year? I am not a usual FO basher, but I think it is time to shift course again from "we are going to be competitive" to "we are going to win."

What is out there to assist in this philosophy shift? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Beltre has been a horrible hitter for Seattle, so that is the hold up there. The other guys we talked about. And trading players amid massive, team-wide underachievement is tricky. Sometimes the other team wants a guy playing well in return.

brandon frye: It seems to me that Seattle would be eager to dump Beltre since he has underachieved the moment he got there. He is a great defensive player and I think STL could reserect his bat. I have heard they want relief pitching which we seem to have a bunch of young talent there. Could it be a fit?
Jeff Gordon: Getting Beltre wouldn't be tough, given his horrible hitting. But if the Cards are so good at turning around hitters, why are Ludwick, Ankiel, Duncan, Molina, et al struggling at once?

Danno: The days of landing a veteran to really give us a boost the likes of what Will Clark and Larry Walker have did in the past are over. Maybe you can help me with this one though, why do will still have all of our outfielders? Seems to make since to me that would should have unloaded at least one of them by now to get some help (third base or pitching). I do realize that are all struggling at the moment but the weren't in spring training and April. Just think the hot start by Barden and Thurston gave management a good excuse not to make a move. Thanks for answering my question.
Jeff Gordon: Dealing for older guys is still quite possible, especially in the late going.

All four outfielders are still here because two got hurt at the same time, then both guys struggled when the came off the DL. Duncan had a chance to build trade value in their absence and failed.

joie: So Gordo any chance Dewitt and company sell the team and go back to Cincinnati and send Walt Jocketty back ? the smug and condescending attitude of Mo is unbearable just fess up and tell us it will be a while to rebuild a competitive team don't say we are in a good place it is obvious to all we are not and haven't been since the end of 06
Jeff Gordon: Why should Mozeliak say it take a while to rebuild a competitive team when it is a couple games out of first place?

IlliniBirdFan: Did Mo and Luhnow get their spin degrees from the same university? I actually think Mo is a pretty sharp guy whose hands are somewhat tied, but the spin that he and Lunhow put on every topic is revolting. Is there any chance Mo will pull the trigger before the Birds fall out of the picture. They way they've looked lately, that could happen soon. On another note, lots of folks seem to be clamoring for Matt Holliday -- I would much rather have had the kid from Pittsburgh. With what the Braves gave up, I think the Birds could have at least matched that or done better. Did we fall asleep on this one?
Jeff Gordon: McLouth is a nice player, but it's not like he can play third base or really protect Albert. But that IS the sort of deal Mozeliak needs to make, since the Braves traded quantity for quality.

Marty VonBokel: A very important point that I have not heard mentioned is the fact that as the Cardinals' season opened and the team was not considered to be a contender, the opposing teams did not schedule their ace pitchers to throw against the "lowly" Cards. That strategy made our offense look real good and the statistics proved that.
Since that great April, opposing teams' managers adapted their rotation to combat the Cards' bats.
We are now witnessing what rookie bats and not-yet-ready-for-primetime bats can (not) do against big league pitching.
We can only be grateful that Carpenter may be the stopper that we all had hoped for... but this does not negate the fact that the Cards need help in all aspects of the game.
The Cards' management should look around at the empty seats in the new once-standing-room-only stadium to realize that we St. Louis Cardinal fans will not support a mediocre team by going through the turnstiles next to an empty BallPark Village that we now know will not be financed by a management whose only goal is to milk money from the greatest fans in baseball.
Jeff Gordon: I agree that empty seats will create greater urgency. So, yes, I do see the Cards spending more on this team. Ideally the team will invest in players who can actually get on the field and play the games.

Brian Clarke: Re Cardinals.

the Cardinals have brought a lot of talent to the major league level in recent years and this year is not an exception. What seems to happen with almost all of these players is that their performance deteriorates rather quickly after promising starts. (exceptions are Molina, Pujols, Wainwright and possibly Ludwig) What is the reason for this? What can be done to keep these guys on a more consistent arc of growth.

Brian Clarke
Jeff Gordon: There are two types of young players. Some are real prospects and some are just fill-ins. TLR wonders which of the current kids are real prospects.

Of the players in that category, most have panned out nicely. Schumaker and Ryan are good examples of that this year.

Joe: Jeff,

This is what the Cardinals need:
1. DeRosa (can play second or third)
2. Holliday (will protect Pujols)
3. Tyler Greene should be given the chance to play everyday.
4. Brendan Ryan should be given the opportunity to play 2B everyday
5. Trade Ankiel to Red Sox for Jed Laurie SS, protection for Greene
6. Trade Duncan, Thompson, Ankiel

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Ankiel, Thompson and Duncan need to driver up their trade value ASAP to make that happen.

NormalGuy: Gordo,
Thanks for the time as always. I was just wondering, obviously no one move will cure all that ails the Cards right now, but if you could make one move for a player right now - what would it be?
Personally, as far as the Cards go, I think they played a little over their heads in April and currently are playing well below their ability. I think the month that most accurately demonstrated what they have on the current roster was May, when they were about a .500 team. Just my opinion but I'm sticking to it until they prove me wrong, which I'm really hoping they do at some point.
Jeff Gordon: The one guy capable of helping the most right away is DeRosa, since he plays a need position. If Ludwick never hits again, then perhaps Holliday moves to the top of the list.

Mark Applegate: Why on Earth do we hype Wallace so much, then look to trade off proven commodities for a longer term major league third baseman? Are we grooming Wallace to replace Pujols? Are we hying him to trade him? I see a logjam in corner infielders coming soon, like the mess we have made in the outfield! Ughhh. Enlighten me please!
Jeff Gordon: If Wallace keeps progressing -- and he is just a year out of school -- then he could become a nice trade chip if he can't play third base. Either way, he is a well-regarded asset in the eyes of most impartial experts.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

What do you think Luhnow's draft strategy is for the first and second rounds? I understand drafting in an area of need. But "best player available" seemed to work with Brett Wallace. Even if he never takes an at-bat in STL, he will be a MAJOR trade chip that might net a Holliday, Halladay or Peavy-type deal in the future.

I understand the risk when drafting pitching. But with our glut of OF bats and the progression of middle infielders like Descalso, Martinez and Greene, it seems pitching is the way we have to go. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Pitching, pitching, pitching! The lack of a potential No. 1 or No. 2 starter in the system is a legit concern.

nesporter: How can a team pay $4M to a guy, Adam Kennedy, not to play for us, but not pay $6-10M to find a player that can play for us? The Cardinals need to get a "legitimate" bat in the lineup to help Pujols and Ludwick. I don't care how or who they have to give up. There are guys out there to be had in a trade. Give up Motte or Perez in a package with Ankiel. I'd like to get rid of Duncan, but that limits your options to American League teams only.
Jeff Gordon: I think the team would spend the money for that hitter IF the right deal could be made. Remember, this group has to keep TLR happy and Albert happy. Right now they are not happy.

murtaugh: It would seem the Schumaker-at-second experiment is hurting the Cardinals at two positions. Hard to argue that Skip is not one of the team's three best outfielders. Is sentiment getting in the way of the team shopping Duncan and/or Ankiel? Schumaker in left, Rasmus in center, and Ludwick in right would be a fine everyday outfield for 2009 (and beyond).
Jeff Gordon: If the Cards can make a move to add more offense, then I don't mind Skip's lack of power in the OF. He is a nice leadoff hitter. But right now, the team needs run production and OF is a place where they have the beef.

Patrick Daub Sr.: Has Tony LaRussa given thought to the idea that maybe the Cardinals are struggling rightn ow offensively because there is absolutely nothing even closely resembling a regular lineup? We have players who aren't seeing the ball, but couldn't that just be because our lineup is like a regular rubik's cube? Albert Pujols is the only constant with the rest of the team being moved from position to position and no such thing as an everyday player. What we need to do is establish a lineup that is almost everyday and let these players hit through their slumps, have them work through it. Here is my idea for what should be close to an everyday lineup, let them work through it.

1. Skip Schumaker (2b)
2. Rick Ankiel (LF)
3. Albert Pujols (1b)
4. Ryan Ludwick (RF)
5. Colby Rasmus (CF)
6. Brian Barden (3b)
7. Yadier Molina (C)
8. Pitcher (P)
9. Brendan Ryan (SS)

Any thoughts? Also, why is Wellemeyer playing in the Majors right now, much less a starter for the Cards?
Jeff Gordon: I like that lineup because of the D. I'd flip Ludwick and Ankiel against tough RH pitchers, but otherwise I have no beef with that.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

It seems Daryl Jones is becoming a hot prospect. What type of major league OF do you think he could become. Is he a corner or CF? A leadoff-type or bottom of the order bat?

Also, what type of upside does Daniel Descalso have in the majors? I have been paying more and more attention to this young man and it seems all he does is hit.
Jeff Gordon: With Rasmus in center, Jones would play a corner and probably hit second. Daniel Descalso is hitting, but I don't know that he has established himself as a real prospect yet.

lfkuberski: There have been ten (10) sellouts at the stadium this year. This is also the year for the All-Star Game. Since the callapse of the team last year Dewitt's group has made money. Why should they change anything. It seems to me that a little bit of critism when the club already had ten (10) sellouts will not open DeWitt's pocket book. Only empty seats speak to this group. All the bull about prospects is just that. Colby Rasmus who might one day be a star couldn't be touched. Neither could a few others. Look at the numbers -- hitting under .250, a few long home runs, high ERA's, and yet these people are untouchable. Because their salaries are inexpensive.
Jeff Gordon: Who said Rasmus or any other guys are untouchable? The Cards just don't want to move them in a dumb deal. And a lot of these guys are outperforming older players.

bantam weight: Gordo,
We hear all the talk about the the dome has to be in the top 25% of stadium in the league or the team can opt out of it's lease in 2014 or whenever it is. My question is what factors go into the top 25%? I have not seen that in articles. It has to be more detailed, or a simply line of "top 25%" would seem awful subjective and open a ton of lawsuits.
My question, I would think that revenue stream would be the #1 factor, and I believe the Rams have one of the sweetest deals in the league, they pay a whopping 25K per game. How does the Rams lease stack up to other "newer" stadiums? I would like to see more media coverage on this or is it a cover up because the Rams have it good and they don't want it leaked out?
Jeff Gordon: I believe the Rams deal is one of the best ever -- but is the stadium among the very best at generating revenue? That will be the issue going forward. Expect massive coverage on this topic during the weeks, months and years ahead.

Rhamer99: Who would you rather have Holiday or DeRosa?
I personally say DeRosa just because we have no everyday 3rd baseman right now and I feel that even with the slump that our outfielders are in they are better than who we have at 3rd. Ankiel and Ludwick should hopefully snap out of this funk, but I think if we can trade Duncan then lets do it.
Also, I wouldn't be suprised if we have to give up Ankiel or Ludwick for a big time player.
-Tim
Jeff Gordon: DeRosa is more immediately helpful. If Ludwick is a total washout, then Matt (or any other RH or SH power-hitting OF) would have value for the long haul.

Carl Craig: The lack of activity on the part of the Cardinal front office is proof to the fans and to Albert that management is very satisfied with the status quo. I am a lifelong Cardinal fan and will continue to be one no matter what, but if I lived in the St. Louis area(it's where I'm from and where I grew up), I would be even more discouraged than I already am. I live in the Atlanta Brave broadcasting area and that organization is dedicated to giving the fans something to cheer about. The truth of the matter is that they do it because fans down here will not come if the team isn't very competitive. In St. Louis, the fans are more dedicated and will attend even if the front office doesn't care. So I guess my question is this. Front office... what will you do to please the fans... and keep Albert?
Jeff Gordon: Boy, the Braves have done a lot of salary dumping. I doubt that Atlanta will spend nearly as much as the Cards will spend in the years to come.

Cris Furtado: If the Cardinals make a move for a player not at third base what do you think the odds are of Wallace being called up this year should Glaus not remain healthy?
Jeff Gordon: Wallace is a long shot to play much at 3B this year, but I would expect to see him in September, anyway.

I'd like to see David Freese get another shot if his ankle heals and he puts up some good ABs at Memphis.

Bluff Boy: GORDO push baby, push!

We need some help. Tony needs to throw some bats in the shower and tell them to stopp lolly gaggin. I almost gave up my season tickets last year due to the lack of help we got at the trade deadline and the offseason. I keep them for the all star game and hope that we would stat climbing that ladder. We are still spending money at the ball park, we are not that far behind last years pace........When is the front office going to let MO do his job and go get someone. Dunc has no power. Rick not might be the Ricky we all had wanted him to be. Luddy is slow to come around. This staff can only do so much. With Phat Albert and Toney and Co. we seem to be wasting a good chance at the postseason
Jeff Gordon: De Witt just reiterated, on KFNS, that Mozeliak has the green light to add payroll. But what else must the Cards spend to get the right player? That will always be the question.

Bluff Boy: Where do you think my boy TYLER HANSBROUGH going in the draft?
Jeff Gordon: It appearts he will go very late in the first round.

CardsFanWithTheBlues: Mr. Gordo... What are the chances that the Cardinals make a move and sign Pronger? haha jk.
Jeff Gordon: Bam!

Cardinals9: Hi Gordo,

My view is probably in the minority opinion.

Mather is pretty hot right now down in Memphis, although he has only been back for a short while from his injury. Given his rather successful production upon being called up last year and his adequate defense at 3B, wouldn't it be more "prudent" and more likely that the FO will call him up and wait until closer to the trade deadline to see if they still need to trade for an "impact bat"/3rd baseman. I know our offense is really struggling, but I'd be shocked if Ankiel and Ludwick (both coming off of injuries), Duncan, and Molina don't heat up sooner or later.

I'd hate o see another Danny Haren traded away when Wallace has a shot for 3B in the Bigs next year and we'd likely be trading for a 1-year rental.

Thanks, keep up the good work.
Jeff Gordon: I assume Mather would really have to crush the ball to get a look before September. Mozeliak said as much last week.

Steve: Most questions today are going to deal with the Cards getting a bat at third base, however I would like to know if the front office is going to get off their behinds and do something to shore up the rotation? Wellemeyer is not a starting pitcher and has shown this to be the case. What would it take to make a run at a proven starter for 1/2 season? Am I correct that after the draft this week, Ben Sheets becomes more attractive. I know he and his agent are playing "Cloak and Dagger" about his status, but is an incentive-laced deal with a club option for next year a feasible option? People will growl at me, but what about Pedro? Glavine? We need something quick.
Jeff Gordon: Sheets would be an interesting project. This team has been burned by injured guys, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

I'd do it.

CB: Gordo-
The Cardinals are good this year, but not that good. And it seems that the problems are in both the hitting AND the pitching.
What is the likelihood of longer-term changes in the rotation/bullpen (Thompson/ Boggs/ Mortensen(?)/ Todd/ Walters in, Wellemeyer/ Piniero/ out)? If we do something like that (I vote we should), how does that affect our potential to make big changes in the lineup (DeRosa/ Holliday/ Hawpe(?)/ Beltre)? By moving in younger pitching, are we comitting to keep what would otherwise be our trade-chips? Who else would we give up in a deal if we put Mortensen/Boggs in the rotation?
-CB
Jeff Gordon: I'd like to see more of Boggs and four or five starts for Mortensen. Wellemeyer has pitched his way out of the rotation, in my mind.

Will in Atlanta: I know you're getting some pankicky emails today, and I'm interested in your responses. What a weekend. I had forgotten about the Rick Porcello thing, and it sure reminded me how cheap the Cards really have become. Thanks to 2006 (which I loved, and was present for), they feel like they can roll Pujols and (a healthy) Carp with a bunch of whatever and hope for the best. What I really don't understand is how can they be soooo careful with finances, yet WASTE money every year on Khalil Greene, Mark Mulder, Kennedy and Matt Clement. Wasted $$!! Remeber back when they balked at paying Grudz $2M (or was it less?) and ended up spending MORE on Spivey and Ronnie Belliard. And Gruz is still productive three years later!

Everything has come full circle now, every worst-case scenario is cashing in and finally the Jocketty thing makes sense to me and other Cardinal fans-- he saw it coming, thought Lunhow was a hack (ahem, jury?) and forced his way out. Meanwhile, the Cards haven't made a big in-season move since Larry Walker (Jeff Weaver does not count-- dumpster dive) and every move since has been under-researched with money as the main driver. You don't think Beane knew something was wrong with Mulder and the Padres with Greene? The Cards are now gun-shy and have no one to blame but themselves for not doing their homework when they see a guy's price tag is lower than it should be.

Whoa be Mozielanek if the Cards lose today. A ton of fans are on the ledge and you can't help but suspect that LaRussa and Pujols are next. Mozeielanek has shown us nothing but his willingness to be a flunky and an apologist for a bottom-line driven ownership. "Nothing to see here, AllStar Game coming up! Pujols is in it! Best fans in America!"
Jeff Gordon: The money spent on injured and former players should be the biggest concern for fans. Money wasted on those guys have prevented the addition of guys actually able to play.

Scott: Regarding third basemen upgrades, what trade packages do think it would take to bring Mark DeRosa, Adrian Beltre, or Garrett Atkins? DeRosa is most useful if Glaus is OK, Beltre is probably the most productive, and Atkins is likely the cheapest.
Jeff Gordon: Other teams should ask for Perez, McClellan or Motte, either Boggs or Mortensen, plus D. Jones.

Dennis: Why isn't there more talk about our hitting coach maybe not doing his job. Seems like he would be a focal point on why the club is not hitting. Jeff, think its time for a new hitting coach?
Jeff Gordon: Well, these guys hit for Hal last year and they hit for him in April. He coaches the same way. At some point, the players need to play better.

MightyMike: This is worse than waiting for Christmas. We have been waiting for the move, THE MOVE, since the end of last season. Everyday I look at the paper, the web site, the blogs, everything watching for news of THE MOVE. There really is only one question for Mo. When will there be a move?
Jeff Gordon: If you're waiting for a massive Herzog-caliber deal, that is not likely to happen.

charlie scott: Mo,
Thank you for continuously taking time out of your day to remain somewhat in touch with the fans. I say somewhat because there is obviously a sharp disconnect between us. The story kind of goes like this...
Long before you were named to replace Walt Jocketty, the St Louis fans have shown up and supported whatever team the former front offices threw together. We've been there through thick and thin. 100 win seasons and 70 win seasons. We still sell out the stadium, and we still make St. Louis one of the tops in attendance every year. But the time has come to do something that you are not used to doing. Something that may require a little bit of testicular fortitude. Something that will require you to become a realist and bring down the fosad youve been hiding behind over the last two seasons. Mo, we know whats really going on here. We get called the smartest fans in baseball for a reason. You can no longer try and fool us. We want to win, and we want to win now. All it takes is a little bit of talent in the lineup and we are there. We can easily take the division, and maybe even the National League. All its going to take is one or maybe two offensive moves. The upside to making these moves is obvious. Albert gets the protection he needs, and the pressure is taken off of the solid pitchers that we have. Consequently, we win. The down side to the moves would be simple as well. The lineup goes flat, just like a season ago. We struggle to maintain third place in the division. And Albert eventually walks into a contract with the Mets because they make the moves that you wont.
The time is now Mo. Its time to etch your name into the Cardinal's history books. So go out and make that eye popping move. Go get us that big bat that we all know is needed. Make this franchise one to be reckoned with again. Dont let this year be another waste with the previous one. Carpenter and Pujols are just getting older, and someday soon they wont be here to depend on any more, and neither will the fans who pay your bills every day.
Jeff Gordon: Nice speech, but I don't believe DeWitt sees the situation is that dire.

gianni: Jeff---you've obviously been corrupted/ or your employment is in danger by the Dewitt secret police. If you can somehow tell (in code if you have to) us the extrme pressure you are under--DO NOT BE AFRAID---Go to the FBI or Homeland security--do not go to the local police as they have been paid off also---you'll be okay--be brave...
Jeff Gordon: Good one!

Ray: Hey Gordo:

My theory of what pains the Cards is a lack of experienced hitting. Albert is really the only veteran hitter, regardless of what the one PD article said this morning. Though Ludwick, Ankiel, Duncan, and Schumaker are not rookies, none has that much time in the majors. Even Molina is not a great hitter, though he has improved much. Surround these players with the true rookies playing short and third and you have a very young hitting club. They are in a team funk and have little experience to fall back on of what to do. I think the loss of Glaus this year is the key, not only for his bat but for his experience. Do you go along with this?
Jeff Gordon: There's some truth to that. Ankiel was supposed to step forward this year. Ludwick was supposed to be pretty good. Their failure, combined with the death of K. Greene and Glaus, really crushed the offense.

zuccarel: The management of Cards may not make the "big move" unless it's a long term help, or if the current team is viewed as a serious contender with that move. Last year's team effectively got a vote of no confidence, and no moves were made. As much as this team is struggling offensively, and with several key positions ineffective, this team may not be "one move away". Will they get another vote of no confidence? Or, will Mo make a move regardless this time to keep attendance strong?
The front office has no excuse payroll-wise, because it's clear that attendance/revenue will be above their lowered projection, particularly if the Cards stay in the hunt.
Jeff Gordon: There is money to spend and it will get spent -- unless every other team tries to hold up the Cards for the rest of the season.

And that is unlikely.

Scott: for some time (years) we do not want to work on the farm system ie we do not have people to bring up to play. You tell us u are trying. but when someone is hurt you do not have people to bring up why. we do not have people on the farm system. the bottom line is you are not giving a good product to send on the field. you got a new place to play charge high prices and the wheels are coming off. lets stop taking money out of the system to pay the owners and stick it in and on the product to play the game. we are going to be the gigle to lol cards come all star game week
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have nobody to bring up? They have used 13 rookies? What are you talking about?

Maybe Tomorrow: Gordo, normally I have not been the classic Duncan hater that lurks these boards, but this guy has to go. He is a huge liability in the field and if he isn't going to hit, then he needs to sit down or start getting some time in memphis. The only perk for him is to hit for power and he is not hitting period. Joe Mather has started to hit in memhis and should be given some time up here with the parent club. It seems obvious that this team isn't going to make any moves via the trade market, so why not give Mather a shot. I'm not saying he is the answer but do something.
I truely believe this front office isn't going to do anything until there are on longer butts sitting in the stands and by that I mean butts not in seats that have not already been paid for.
Jeff Gordon: When Chris doesn't hit, TLR can't really justify playing him. His lack of a throwing arm is almost as hurtful as his lack of range.

coachcannon: Mo seems to get offended, and even take shots at fans by saying we are negative when the club is tied for 1st place. What he needs to understand is that WE are the consumer. WE buy his product, and WE want return for our investment in the team. Clearly, MO has sat on his hands for the past 2 years while a contending team, manager included, cried out for help. If his job is not to make deals that actually help the team, then what is it? Are we sure that he is not just a figurehead, while Jeff Luhnow really is the power that runs the team with his precious farm teams? The last time I checked, St. Louis Cardinal fans paid all their salaries and made this organization operational, NOT the Memphis, Springfield, and Johnson City Redbird fans. It is paramount the WE win here in the big leagues! Mo needs to get some fortitude an help the club or he will pay the price eventually, along with the team and fans. Mo says we are in a good place? Well we will see when he becomes the whipping boy for Cards owners and Luhnow. I guess I could be a whipping boy for his salary though.
Jeff Gordon: The team has made lots of changes over the last two years and will make many more.

tlm2020: With the losses mounting, how much longer can the Cardinals wait until they pull the trigger? I suspect either Ludwick or Ankiel will likely be in any trade that might occur.
Jeff Gordon: If either guy who hit, that would help.

steve: Gordo
If the Cards stand pat does that mean Tony and Dave Duncan will be gone at season's end?
Worst yet could we see the end of Albert's stay with the end of his contract?
Young DeWitt stated on FSN that the only way the team was filling seats was discounting them. So you think the All Star Game is a show case to sell the team?
Jeff Gordon: Those guys will walk, for sure, if the team doesn't make any moves and the team dies horribly.

Mr.Bad to the Bone: Jeff -thanks for taking my questions. First do you really believe mortgaging part of the future to get Holliday for a little more than half the season is pratical? I really feel the need is much more at 3rd than the OF,and secondly switching to hockey what type of move(s) do you see the Blues making this off season. I'd like to see a finisher up front and perhaps a puck movind Defenseman. Your thoughts and thanks again
Jeff Gordon: The finisher for the Blues is Kariya and offensive defensemen are Brewer, Johnson and Pietrangelo. In other words, help is in house. They really need a GT, first and foremost.

klingenhagen: Any thought to trying Ankiel at third base?
Jeff Gordon: Good one!

Herb: I know most people will be submitting Cards questions, and after this weekend, I can't blame them, but I want to talk about the Rams ownership situation. I am concerned that the economy, the poor cycle the team is in and the stadium will combine to have a new buyer move the Rams. Which St. Louisans could we hope to be the buyer, maybe we can write them letters to buck up? Taylor? Busch? Knight? Who can be the white knight?
Jeff Gordon: I don't know that any of the old-money families are positioned to fund this thing. We'll see. The STL has changed a lot in 15 years. The financial landscape is much different.

FloTrain: I would love to see a trade for a 3rd baseman, a RH power hitting OF or just about anyone that can get on base right now but, honestly, who can you trade/package in deals?... I would hate to see them give up Perez, Motte or Todd. Those three have the makings of a high-quality right side of the bullpen for years.... Does Kinney have much trade value? He seems to have been leapfrogged by Todd. Do Jay or Jones have potential to start in the bigs soon? As much as I respect what they've done and been through, Ankiel and/or Duncan have to go... This mediocrity is killing the Cards offense!
Should they have packaged Ludwick for Holliday when they had the chance?..
Jeff Gordon: Ah, good question. I was in the don't-trade Ludwick-for-Holliday camp. In April, that stance looked smart. Now . . . not so much.

Can Ludwick pull himself together? That is critical to the turnaround.

imetsachelpaige: Jeff, good column this morning-many thanks for what stacks up to be an angry, frustrated chat. I don't care of if we are only 2 out, this is the most defeated Cardinal team at the plate I have seen in 50 years of following the team. I have a proposed course of action to pass by you for comment. Since nothing else is working--at all-- and a difference making trade seems problematic at this point (you can't trade 1/2 the team) it seems to me that seriously shaking things up is the only option. Some shock therapy is in order, an Alamo of sorts for this depressed team that appears to be manifesting it's own destiny.

My suggestion: send a strong message. Fire our hitting coach, send Duncan and at least one other starter to AAA (as should have been the case with Ankiel and Ludwick coming off the DL anyway) and hope that Albert will go postal on his teammates in the clubhouse. Surely the greatest player of our generation can frighten the hell out of them. I'd like to see Tony throwing some chairs, too, or at least getting thrown out of a game-that blown call at first yesterday was a great opportunity. To quote a great line from Bull Durham "They're kids. Scare them."
Jeff Gordon: I feel your pain and I agree that a shake-up is in order. But demoting guys to Memphis isn't practical. Maybe TLR can just make them run steps instead . . .

Cards4520: Thanks for taking time Gordo.

What are the chances of the Cards getting something done within the week? Or do you think it will be right before the deadline?

I know we have some ungodly stingy owners,(att: Bill Dewitt, we will once again have 3 mil. plus in attendence!)... but is there possibility we could get both Holliday and DeRosa? What do you think the chances are of getting just Holliday or DeRosa?
Jeff Gordon: To get both hitters would be very difficult -- this team doesn't have that much pitching.

Cards4520: Also...is there a chance the Cardinals are gunshy again, and miss out on a possible trade?
Jeff Gordon: They'll do something. Whether it will satisfy the public is another matter.

cburn17: Gordo, thanks for the chats! One question slash rant point. Before I begin, I want to say that I have never been a fan of the pitcher I am about to mention, but I must bring attention to this mind bending fact. Joel Piniero should be 10-1 (if not undefeated) based on his numbers this season. He has by far been our best pitcher and the lack of run support indicates a larger problem in the Cardinals lineup than is being admitted. It seems like this team plays their best behind Carp and Wainwright but have let Piniero down big time. Since his 4-0 start his run support has decreased by nearly 6 runs per start. IF he was getting just average run support he would be looking like an early CY-Young candidate. Why does this team not get up for the ENTIRE rotation like they do for Carp and Wainwright? AND what should the fan-response be if MO doesn't make a deal and or makes another bargain-basement move? I seek your wisom in what is turning into a grim summer to be a Cards fan. Thanks.

- Bert from Granite City, IL
Jeff Gordon: If the Cards play like they did this weekend, nobody will buy another ticket. And for good reason.

Randy Rothrock: Heard part of Mo's interview on KMOX. The best he could offer was that there are a lot of positive things happening and the Birds will have K. Greene back soon. Give me a break is that the best he can do? Bring back Izzy too. A no comment or I have no clue would have been more encouraging and believable. I guess my question would be are we really trying to win? Enjoy Albert while you can. The problem isn't Tony or the players it is ownership and front office.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards are NOT banking on K. Greene saving them with an explosive return.

S. Kerr: Gordo, thanks for the chance to ask a question. It's trade time right? I have been a Cardinal apologist, but I agree with my impatient friends and that the standard "wait and see" approach is getting tiresome. Please confirm the Cards will make a move...you can do that right?

If so, considering the fact the Cards aren't getting offensive production from any position (except 1st base) should there be less urgency to fill the void at 3rd base or the middle infield and just get a good offensive bat regardless of the position?
Jeff Gordon: You ought to get three of your OFs going at the same time, so, no, I'd still look 3B first.

Kevin doukas: Living in Scottsdale Az the web and Fox are our lifelines today for all things Cardinals baseball, so, THANK YOU, for taking the time to do this chat.

Now for the question(s), is Mo serious about adding players or is this another smoke screen put up by the owners and those overseeing the mnor league tallent (really miss Porcello. And is this tallent over valued or are legit prospects that can help this over achieving team win today?

Thanks! Cards Fan stuck in AZ
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have lots of big-league caliber prospects. Now, how many will be "impact" players? That is the question.

tom cook: my comment is simple. with the amount of money the cardinals are charging for tickets , concessions , and parking, they will have one family of four(mine) who normally go to 4 games a year not attending games this year. we will be going to springfield or memphis where a family of four can go for 1/4 the price of the major league team. you finally priced my family out of attending games.
Jeff Gordon: Sounds like a plan.

Adam: Is it too early in the season to expect other teams to begin trading their high value properties such as Holliday or Derosa? Is it really realistic to expect a blockbuster deal this far ahead of the deadline?
Jeff Gordon: That IS an issue, but fans would rather blame Mozeliak for being unwilling to deal. Cleveland isn't ready to bail, like it or not. There will be a lot more available later in the year. It is critical that current Cards pick it up.

Lex: If Lohse is out for a considerable amount of time, will the Cards try to get Tom Glavine? Also, why wasn't Hawksworth able to be called up a day earlier, it was a waste to bring Jess Todd up for one whole day and then say that the Hawksworth move was planned all along.
Jeff Gordon: That was kind of silly. I'd like to see Todd get a long run.

As for Glavine, every team scouted him in the minors. I'll be interesting to see which team signs him. Is there anything left?

I'd take a look, but I didn't see him pitch.

Lex: I believe the Rams have one of the best secondaries in the NFC West, if they can get their d-line in order (Adam Carriker) then don't they have a chance making the playoffs? Also, Do you see WR Tim Carter Making the team?
Jeff Gordon: Carter is JAG, just a guy. He would have to make it as a special teams guy -- unless a bunch of guys get hurt.

Big Jimmy: Gordo - Some of the lineups that Tony creates are confusing if not frustrating to the fans. What do you think the owners think of these line ups on a daily basis? Can Tony be doing this to frustrate them as well if he is getting little to no help from them?
Jeff Gordon: Tony always rotates guys. When they hit, he looks smart. When it doesn't, they complain. When nobody hits, why even argue the point?

CP: Jeff--

With the NHL draft coming up in a few weeks, I would like your opinion on something. I am a big fan of Jarmo, but is this guy a little overrated? For every late first-rounder he has unearthed (T.J. Oshie, Patrik Berglund, David Perron), he also has a clunker on his record (Shawn Belle, Marek Schwarz, second-rounder Scott Jackson). I would be curious to know your thoughts on his track record since joining the Blues.
Jeff Gordon: There have been too many misses, especially in goal. I'd say he has been just OK in his role, not a genius.

With so many high picks the last few years, the Blues HAD to get some players.

Brian: Whats your thoughts on Mo? I think that he is trying to make deals, but he is limited because everyone wants the prospects that are considered untouchable. Sooner or later he is going to have to let go of one of those guys to get anything in return.
Jeff Gordon: Which prospects are untouchable?

Carl_winslow: What's Up J. GO? I am really lacking some fotball right now, and I am looking forward to what is known as the "CLASH OF THE TITANS" Rams Vs. Chiefs on September 3rd. Who do you think has the better team this year?
Jeff Gordon: Hmmmm . . . I'll go with KC, given the move at QB.

Brian: Gordo,

I was out of town last week, so my question is did the rams make an official announcement that the team is for sale? I keep hearing stuff about them moving.

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: They have been sale for some time, actually.

unn: Hi, Gordo,
Did Mike Martz find a job?
Thank you
Jeff Gordon: Not that I'm aware of.

rbc1: Gordo, what is the general feeling about Rasmus from those around the organization, is he what was expected?... so far i have been very impressed with his defensive skills and his lightening quick bat i just wish he would go back to taking walks like he did int he first month
Jeff Gordon: Still a lot to learn at the plate -- but he has nice long-term potential. Impact offensive and defensive player.

Leecard: Do you think the Cards would have enough to trade for Holliday? I think that with the salaries dropping off their payroll this year the Cards may be in a position to afford both Pujols and Holliday. If they would trade for Holliday I certainly hope it wouldn't be for a half a year rental. Would they be able to work a 1-2 year extension before a trade? Do you think that would be a possibility? Are my red glasses screwed on too tight?

I also don't think one trade or move will be enough. I think we are getting to the point where the Cards are going to have to do something about Duncan, Ankiel and Wellemyer if the results don't start getting better very soon. I have not been a Duncan basher or a FO basher but the results have to be better than what we have seen for the last month+.
Jeff Gordon: They have more than enough to land Holliday, if the front office believes that is the right deal. But would the players lost leave too many holes? And is there a better deal for a power-hitting INF out there.

milomiller: Thanks for the time Jeff. This is a rough stretch for the Cards, and we desperately need help. The offense is too 1 dimensional with high strikeout, no speed hitters in the middle of the order. You hear the name of Matt Holiday being thrown around, but do we have enough to offer. It seems our minor league pitchers, Boggs, Todd are oeverhyped and no better than a number 4 major league starter. Can and WILL Mo pull off a Jockety type trade to keep us in the race. Or will we stand pat and try to fight through this downwards spiral, and if not become sellers at the trade deadline.
Jeff Gordon: They can get Holliday, but it will cost a lot more than minor league pitching.

mpat890935: Will Troy Glaus be back this year? Is he still getting paid? Even though he has not played a game all year? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: He is getting paid $11.5 million. Who says DeWitt is cheap?

dave: What in the world was Mo thinking when he complained that some fans seem to think we're last in the league, the way we're begging for roster help?

The reason we know we need help is *because* we're contending - if we were in the basement of the division, no one would be demanding that ownership go out and rent a bat. We know that we have most of the pieces we need to make a run this year - all that's really needed to make the team a legitimate postseason threat is a big bat.

Those comments were a pretty disturbing sign to me that the goal is to be "good enough" and play a few months of entertaining baseball before running out of gas late in the season and finishing in the middle of the pack. Mo is a smart guy - shouldn't he be able to figure out that naturally the most call for roster help would come when the team has a chance to make the playoffs?
Jeff Gordon: If this team sinks to the bottom of the NL Central, fans will quit demanding moves? Really?

John Bruce: Ryan Spilborghs has become a 5th outfielder in Colorado. Can he provide modest help (he's RH ), and are the Cards interested. I would think he could be had on the cheap.
Jeff Gordon: Interesting guy on this team.

tony: thousands of dollars for season tickets.
$6 hot dogs and cheeseburges.
$5 sodas and waters.
$8 beers.
what does it get you?
a very sorry baseball team.
Jeff Gordon: This weekend, that was the case.

Earlier, the home record were pretty good.

vgsram: Hi Jeff! Thanks for taking my question.

I was wondering about the depth chart at LB. Sounds like Grant and Vobora have a good battle going on, but are they really just battling for a backup job behind Draft? Or do you think one of them could really win the job. I know it's early but who would you put your money on winning the starting gig?
Jeff Gordon: Grant has generated the most buzz. Perhaps he could start and return Draft to a utility role.

Greg: Do you ever see where the Puppet strings are tied to Mo'z arms, legs & mouth? I have looked, but cant find them anywhere.. Since he is Dewitt's lacky puppet. I hope he knows that he is the MLBs worst GM & maybe one of THE WORST ALL-TIME. I just hope he is ashamed at what he done to the Cardinals franchise. If not, then he needs to look in the mirror & see that he has failed EVERYONE in Cardinal Nation..
Jeff Gordon: Worst GM of all time? We'll remember that one. Falling two games out of the lead is devastating for sure. That never happened when Jocketty was here.

tessondave: As I wrote in the PD's Sound Off section during the off season, I think it would be a good move to trade Chris Duncan's bat to an American League team for whatever spot we need to fill. He has proven time & time again that he is NOT a major league outfielder but has a lot of pop in his bat. Are there any AL teams that would be suitable for a trade such as this ?
Jeff Gordon: Perhaps, but would he fetch much in a deal?

Lewis Kincade: St Louis native who lives in Los Angeles (also a 1975 all-metro ftbll selection from Maplewood).
What gives with the baseball Cardinals front office? They are starting to remind me of the old football Cardinals led by Bill Bidwill--afraid to draft the top talent available because of $$. This is not a good situation, and Albert Pujols has to be watching.
Jeff Gordon: Afraid to draft top talent? Two No. 1 picks from '05 are starting today. The Cards make a mistake by passing over Porcello over money, but that hasn't happened since then.

davulture24: Have the Cards even considered bringing in someone like Glavine or Martinez for a temporary fix while we recover from injuries? While veterans such as these may not be a long-term solution, a quick fix to pull us through the blunt of the season may be possible plus the experience and media attention helpful also. I'm tired of seeing unknown maybes stepping onto the mound in a coin toss of having a good game.
Jeff Gordon: I'd sign Pedro just to help the clubhouse. Mo may not see it that way, so (gasp!) we're have to disagree on something else.

jimec: Has Adam Dunn's name ever come as a addition to the Cardinal's, Washington is ALWAYS looking for youth, and apparently the Birds have plenty of it. Him in Left Field sure would make up for lack of punch at 3rd. I dont know alot about the finances end of a deal like that just seems like we have the youth to make a deal like that.
Jeff Gordon: Another LH hitter? Another guy that can't play in the field? No thanks.

Ron Phillips: The Cardinals are in need of power at third base. There are also concerns at short and second base. Could the Cardinals do this? Let Tyler Greene, Brendan Ryan, Joe Thurston platoon at short and second. Put Schumaker in left field with Rasmus in center and Ludwick in right. Package Ankiel, Duncan, and prospects in a deal for third baseman Beltran and Barden back up third. I realize Beltran has a huge salary, but trading Ankiel and Duncan, some salary is released. Deal with Khalil Greene as time allows. I wondered your thoughts and thanks for taking questions?
Ron
Jeff Gordon: If you're talking about Beltre, it wouldn't take much to get him and his salary out of Seattle. Trouble is, he hasn't hit much in years.

dave cobler: Hello Gordo;

Duncan and Ankiel seem to be challenged with adversity. Ludwick has hit some balls hard only to see them take a death dive into someones glove. Whats your feeling about what is going on with the Cards? How much longer do you think they can tread the water in the dead sea before they quit fighting and give in to the doom and gloom? It sure is pitiful to watch.

Thanks Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: Guys giving into the frustration need to be the line to be traded. This team wants to contend every year and you can't contend with guys folding left and right.

Ross: What is your opinion of Ankiel/Duncan. I believe they are as good as they are going to get, so why keep playing them if they are going to take careless at-bats and hit around .220. You don't need 1 of those type players in your lineup, much less 2. Aside from Pujols, Yadi, and Ludwick, I don't see any major league players in the lineup. Rasmus seems to have legit potential and obviously K. Greene has proven himself in the past and needs to get right, but at some point the FO needs to pony up and grab somebody thats ready right now, not in 2 or 3 years so that we can go somewhere this season. What are your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I believe Ankiel can be better than we've seen, even with his weaknesses. He is a big leaguer. Schumaker is a big leaguer. Rasmus is a big leaguer right now. Ryan is a big leaguer. So I don't see the point.

ramboy81: hey' mr gordon? and you tell me how mr sean walker , is doing in ota .
Jeff Gordon: He is one of many, many guys going after one spot.

Now, if he can become a lights-out kick returner, that would help.

slappygohappy: Gordo,

What are the Cards going to do with Ring? He is tearing up AAA at Memphis. WHIP at .85, an ERA at .40, keeping hitters to just a .171 average and read somewhere that he has only allowed one inherited runner to score the entire year. It doesn't seem likely he will be brought up to the big leagues with Reyes and Miller having decent years. Is he trade bait? Insurance policy? Or just an afterthought?
Jeff Gordon: Depth guy, afterthought.

Jeepster: How convenient! Now Mozeliak doesn't have a "pitching surplus" to deal from. If he turns his back on this ball club again, why should this man be employed beyond this season?
Jeff Gordon: When did he ever turn his back?

starr87: In looking at this team, I see two issues. Lack of protection for Albert and consistent pitching. What about signing Tom Glavine to help the young guys learn how to pitch? Or I see that Boston wants to trade Brad Penny. He can eat up some innings. As for offense, Holliday would provide more, but must be signed long term instead of as a summer rental.

What are your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Penny looks he is toast. Glavine may be toast, too, but I'd take a look, for sure. Experience counts for something.

hallplante: Gordo,

Now that the Blues made the playoffs, they end up drafting towards the bottom half.

By contrast, the Penguins and Blackhawks succeeded because they stockpiled top-five draft picks.

In hindsight, do you think making the playoffs was the best thing for the Blues' quest for the Cup?
Jeff Gordon: At some point, a team needs to learn to win. The team took enough high picks. It had to learn to hit.

bobincorona: Gordo,

What day does training camp open this year for the Rams? It can't come fast enough for me.
Jeff Gordon: Come on, baseball season is just warming up!

BobJMc13: Doesn't Mozeliak, or as I like to call him, NO-ZZZZeliak, seem to you to be the most indecisive and/or lazy GM in all of Major League baseball. I do not see him trying to make a move during the season, despite his protestations. In the off-season, he does nothing to go after some real needs, unless you think Trevor Miller has been a real stud for us...and we know about K Green. Can you name 3 GMs who are worse?
Jeff Gordon: Let's . . . the Astros are great . . . so are the Pirates . . . The Nationals are a juggernaut . . . the Royals are tanking again . . . Detroit went belly up with a huge payroll . . . the Indians have labored for years . . . yeah, actually, it's not hard to point fingers.

deebox: Hey Gordo can you are any one tell me how do a whold teame go into a slump. Is there something else going on that we don;t know about. I can see the way albert looks when his team mates fail at the plate, do you think the front office see the same thing. And why do they keep playing duncan.
Jeff Gordon: If Ludwick would resume hitting, maybe Duncan wouldn't get as many at bats.

Bluebirds66: Could someone tell me why the Cards batters have to swing at the first pitch most of the time? All they are doing is let the opposing pitcher stay in the game longer by swinging so early in the count.
Jeff Gordon: Every at bat is different. The Cards have really worked some pitchers, even in this slump. On the other hand, why let the other team know you lay off first pitches? You take a lot of fastballs that way.

murrowboy2: are there any Cardinals--other than pujols, wainwright, molina and carpenter--who should not be dangled as trade bait?
Jeff Gordon: No.

Joe: Jeff,

Do you think the Cardinals see Skip as the long term fix at 2B? If Duncan teaches pitch to contact doesn't your defense up the middle go along with that? I like Skip, just in the outfield.

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Nah, Skip is just filling in for now. He is doing an admirable job of adapting, but I would be surprised to see him stay there for the long haul.

JP: Hey Gordo, so with all of the excitement of the NBA finals, buzzer beaters, and overtime victories. I am just curious as to what you think the likelihood of a NBA team moving to St. Louis would be? Thank you for your time!
Jeff Gordon: In this economy, zilch.

Jason Busb: The whole state of Missouri is too cheap and just want to get by. St.Louis cheap owners would rather make their money and let us fans watch pitchers that wouldn't make another major league roster. Last year we could have been great but they just watched the team go down the dumps. Great coaches with bumb pitching
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have the fourth-best ERA in the NL. Which of these pitchers couldn't make another big league roster?

BobJMc13: Jeff
Thanks for the response. As a follow-up, you are telling me that Dave Dombrowski of Detroit is a worse GM than Mozeliak? Dave has taken tow teams to the World Series (it would have been three with Montreal, but it was the strike year), built two World Series winners with the Marlins (although he left the year they won their second) and is currently in 1st place.

You may want to rethink that...
Jeff Gordon: Dave has rolled the dice on some big deals. It looked he bought a long-term juggernaut. Then the bottom fell out and his team had to eat a LOT of salary.

It'll be fun to see what he does with less money going forward. He has worked in that world, too, so it'll interesting.

And he did sign Porcello after the Cards passed, so he has that.

williemcgee51: There it is, Rockies go up 1-0. We officially have to lose this game with our noffense.
Jeff Gordon: But the Cards scored on a wild pitch, so there!

Ed Reeve: Hello Gordo, Thanks for this opportunity. Do Georgia's heirs want to move the rams to LA because they dislike STL, our stadium size, or both? I was for our stadium, but against it's small size, because of it's limitations. I was at a lunchion (eons ago) w/ one of the partners, or RCGA to tell us about the stadium's plans & location, w/ an opportuniy for questions. I voiced my objection about its size because it's size (because "that's all the fans this area could draw" perpetuated our history of progressive movement, then undone by "cow town" mentality. We should build it larger primarily for two main reasons; "if you buid it, they will come", and we'll never have a superbowl here, or major conventions. An example of which is the Natiobal Biz Aviation Ass, specifically said they'd never return here because we are too small. If the owner's say it's size that's their reason, I'd think we could redesign ours by combining/merging the convention side & stadium side into one, larger stadium; the playing field would be rotated 90 degrees from it's current layout. If it's location, whta's the possibility (no matter how crazy it may sound) of the metro community buying the team like Green Bay did? Thanks again for this chance to talk w/ you, sir. /s/Ed
Jeff Gordon: They like St. Louis. They just have to sell, period.

Matt: Thanks for taking my question. In the past, various columnists have noted it takes a couple of years to determine a GM's performance. Initially, Mo was given decent reviews due to his Rolen for Glaus swap, Loshe extension, and recently what was assumed to be a smart play for K. Greene. However, time has passed and these same positives appear less helpful. And recent transactions such as the Barton trade, passing on O. Hudson, not seeing the K. Greene issues, and passing on Porcello seem to be flags against the talent evaulation process of the GM. Coupled with the failure (thus far) to aquire talent to address needs (especially in terms of striking when we are in a strong position), potentially Mo's reviews require a revision. What is your current opinion of Mo's GM performance? If ranked among MLB GM's where would you place him and why?
Jeff Gordon: I still like Lohse deal. I like the Reyes signing. Rolen had to go, period. Glaus soured after dramatically outplaying Rolen last year. Too bad Mo insisted he take another year. I like the progress of the young players and the Dominican signings.

Mozeliak has been fine so far. He just needs to ignore sports talk radio and the chat rooms and manage his assets wisely.

bshivepoker: gordo..

please tell me why everyone is on YOUR case regarding these moves.
Did you become GM last night, or did I miss something?

this is why Mo needs to make another apparence on the chat, so he can personally take the heat for his "non activity" concerning the birds.

i think you are unfairly targeted by our fans, when the real culprit (MO)
answers to no one.
Jeff Gordon: I have the temerity to suggest that maybe the man should be cashiered, immediately, for letting this team slip off the lead by a couple of games.

On that note, I bid farewell till next week.

This was a new record for me, I believe, in terms of total posts.
