Tackleberry: Gordo,

Do you think that Spags' "four pillars" might have been something that was best kept as an internal reference point? It seems that this critera, applied to almost all free agents/draft picks, is becoming almost as limiting to the Rams as "low hanging fruit" and "dry powder" has become to the Cardinals.
Jeff Gordon: For a rebuilding program -- one that is trying to overcome inherited character issues -- I think this is a good position to take. It is good PR and it is a good way to rebuild the core of a team. When the team finishes below .500, management can point to this as a price to pay to rebuilding character as well as talent. And most fans will accept on-field failure if they believe overall progress is being made with the right sort of players.

Now, if you take shortcuts, take on questionable character and still fail -- that is a problem.

Once the team has a good leadership core, then it can take a few more chances on guys. The the front office can count on leaders to police the team.

rvines217: Last year Molina and Ludwig had career years with the bat and we still finished 4th. Now we have no 3rd baseman; no major league 2nd baseman and Duncan/Stavinoha covering about 5 yards square each in left field. In the pitching department we have Wellemeyer, Pineiro and Lohse, all mediocre at best. Wainwright is pitching like a rookie again. Everyone in the FO is looking at the minor league "eggs" through rose colored glasses. Can you please tell me why Albert would want to stick out the rest of his career in this mess? I've been watching Cardinal baseball since 1947. I stand to be corrected if you can.
Jeff Gordon: If team keeps contending, as it is now, then he will listen to the Cards offers. If the franchise keeps developing "plus" prospects like Rasmus, Perez, Motte, McClellan, T. Greene and keeps locking in key young veterans like Wainwight and Molina, then he will listen to offers.

The Las Vegas Cardinal: Gordo,
Hello from Las Vegas.
Ok what are the real odds the Cardinals will make "ANY" deal?
And after you make the odds can we place a bet? lol

Thanks...
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will make at least one deal, but the prime time for deals is still four to five weeks off.

BillP: Hey Jeff, how bout them Penguins! Awesome turnaround, you gotta give their coach a lot of credit. Unlike last year, this years team adjusted during the series and that was the difference. Remember last year? How Detroit stuffed them and Pittsburgh had trouble getting the puck up ice? This year at the start of the series, Pittsburgh was true to form, carrying the puck over Detroits blue line trying to be creative, but in games 6 and 7 they predominantly dumped the puck in and really threw a changeup at Detroit. It didn't hurt that Fleury was fantastic in Game 7 either, he really rose to the occassion. Great Game! And how bout Hossa? Has he put a big monkey on his back or what? If he knows what's good for him, he'll take whatever he can with Detroit and just ink a new deal there and maybe he'll eventually get that Cup, but zero goals in a 7 game Finals don't look too good on his resume. Thanks - Have a good week !
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the Red Wings want to keep Hossa. Apparently Detroit will dump several mid-tier forwards to make that happen. In a somewhat depressed FA market, he ought to re-up and stay where he is.

Michael Kent: Jeff ...

Any chance that Brad Thompson stays in the rotation once Kyle Lohse returns from the DL? I mean, the Cards are 19-8 whenever Thompson starts. How can TLR and DD continue to ignore this? Send Todd Wellemeyer to the bullpen to sort himself out.

Also, if the voting were held today, how would Colby Rasmus fare in NL Rookie of the Year voting? Who are the prime rookies in the league at this point?

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: If Thompson pitches as well as he did last time out, he will stay in the rotation. That was impressive. Wellemeyer is throwing up caution flags with his talk about declining velocity.

Gamel of the Brewers will take a run at the NL rookie of the year honors. Lot of pop there. McCutchen with the Pirates has time to do big damage too.

Brianbase: If you had to put a % on it right now, what are the chances of the Rams staying in St. Louis in your opinion?
Jeff Gordon: In the near term, 100 percent. Within 10 years, 80 percent. There are more vulnerable franchises in the league right now and the bad economy will hurt some would-be markets.

Brianbase: If Cards make no moves, where do you predict they finish? I think betwwen 84-87 wins and 3rd or 4th place.
Jeff Gordon: The odds of them making no moves at all are nil. Do they make bad moves or good ones? How much (if anything) will they get from returning players?

If this team can hang around a while, the money available and the prospect depth will put them in good shape. But they must get more from guys like Ankiel. Ludwick and Duncan to get to that point.

Mike4265: Thanks for the opportunity to ask. Has anyone asked or answered why it took so long to "find" Glaus' shoulder? I just cannot believe he woke up one day in January with it that bad.
Jeff Gordon: It's an odd thing for sure. The shoulder was a problem last season, but not enough to merit surgery. This did hit the team out of the blue, although everybody understood there was some injury risk with this guy.

doug martin: are the cardinals paying glaus or is an insurance paying? are they saving
ten million $'s by him being on dl?
Jeff Gordon: I don't know if there is any insurance that kicks in on him. This guy had an extensive injury history, so I'd be surprised if the team had much protection there.

DBQIA: When I was a kid my grandfather used to talk about the "single wing". How does the current "wildcat" formation differ from that much much older formation?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: I covered single wing teams at the high school level. Yes, I'm old. The single wing I saw had multiple backs and a lot of misdirection build. The Wildcat lacks some of that trickery, but, like the single wing, it features a direct snap to a versatile athlete.

lwanderson99: Jeff,

With all of the talk about help at 3rd base, has there been any discussion of giving Allen Craig a chance in the Majors? I know he was moved to the outfield and then First Base. I also know he struggled for a while but he appears to have regained his batting stroke.
Jeff Gordon: His hitting hasn't reached that level yet. I did see him in spring training and he did make a great impression. He could be a bench guy some day.

JaLyn1201: Gordo, now that it looks like Izzy is really done, is there any chance that the Cardinals will honor him with a "day"? Has La Russa said "over my dead body he comes back to Busch" so he has to wait for the Matheney/Mabry era for this to happen? I would sure love to see him as the bullpen coach with Matheney or Mabry as the manager in another 3-4 years but I guess DeWitt will not want to pay anything for this kind of talent!
Jeff Gordon: Honoring Izzy would be a great idea. So would bringing him back in some capacity. He really showed his leadership in '06 when he got hurt. He coached up Wainwright as a closer.

Tackleberry: What is your best guess as to what the Cards will do with these outfielders at the end of this season? Do you really see Ludwick/Duncan/Ankiel all coming back in '10? If not, why not move someone now and get something/anything in return?
Jeff Gordon: They have to hit to become commodities. I'd see Ludwick returning because of his glove and his right-handed bat. This team needs to add one more RH outfield with real clout. This could mean just letting Ankiel walk as a free agent if nobody wants to trade for him.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

Carpenter looked tired last night (a comment made by Mrs. Tackleberry) even before he threw a pitch. How much do you think DeWitt's most recent comments took wind out of these guys' sails?

Also, when will this club stop using the "we faced a lefty" crutch?
Jeff Gordon: Guys just waiting around for help to arrive should be the first guys the team offers around. As for the lefties thing, this RH/LH imbalance has been evident from Day 1. Khalil Greene was supposed to help some of that. So were Freese and Mather, once Glaus bowed out for bulk of the year. Their collective failure (some related to injuries) created a real void.

It's not hard to ID this team's need. Dealing for that on June 15 is tough. A lot will change between now and Aug. 1 around baseball.

James: Thanks Gordo for doing these chats. I was wondering what your thoughts are on where this team will end up? Do we make a trade or not, and if we don't make a trade how will the team respond? I know the season is still pretty young but we don't seem to be improving. Do you think the team peaked in the first month or can we get back to where we were? Thanks so much!
Jeff Gordon: Change is needed, as we can all see. The Cards still need to see which Ryan Ludwick will finish the season and which Rick Ankiel will finish the season. Khalil Greene must get one more run to see if he can offer anything. Will Kyle Lohse pitch any time soon? With so many questions, it's safe to say this team isn't a trade away from greatness. If the Cards don't narrow down their needs, there won't be much John Mozeliak can do from his perch.

dub the beachcomber: Gordo, the way DeWitless sounded in the article by Joe Strauss, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for any significant move. Sure, if someone is giving a player away, he may take a look only if there is a surefire profit involved. That being said, do you know of any upcoming d.f.a.'s or others we might find in the trash heap? Since Arizona is losing, any chance to get Filipe Lopez back only this time at third? Also, is it time to trade Albert? He should bring quite a bundle.
Jeff Gordon: There is no need to trade Albert, who has 2-plus years left on his contract. If efforts to extend his deal by the start of the 2010 season fail, then, yes, the franchise would have to explore that.

The real trade activity doesn't come until the latter stages of July. That is just how baseball works. The Brewers and Cubs are in the same spot -- teams can't wait for trades to spark a run.

dub the beachcomber: Does DeWitt et.al. realize that every time he opens his mouth he just does more damage? He may be the world's best businessman but he is the world's worst public relations man. Do the players, Albert in particular, feel the frustration with ownership that is so apparent among the fanbase? Will the paper ever challenge ownership to tell the truth and if they won't, will you waterboard them? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt is being honest. The trade mart picks up in late July every year. He could lie and say there are tons of players up for grabs right now, but that is not the case.

dub the beachcomber: Gordo, I heard a rumor that Tony will waterboard Dewit until he trades for a big bat. Any truth here?
Jeff Gordon: Well, the Cards could trade Wainwright right now and get a big bat. Beyond that, what player would command that sort of return?

Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff, I have a quick Blues question for you. At this years draft. Is it better to go for best available or team need? At the 17th pick, I doubt we will get a blue chip player but who knows?
Thank You
Scott
Jeff Gordon: I'd like to see the team take the best available scorer. Don't take a "safe" pick capable of becoming a third- or fourth-liner someday. Go for offensive upside, even if that talent is years away from arriving.

dave cobler: Hey Gordo;

No doubt the Cards ran into a buzz saw in Clevelands ace Clif Lee last night. Still, it is alarming that for the series with Cleveland the Cards could not put runs on the board. Without Albert Pujols they would have been shut out in back to back games. I don't know what to think of it because HOPE may be blinding me for what could be from what we saw in April. But April is becoming a distant memory as we progress into the season hitting the way we are. I picked them to win between 85 and 89 games at the start of the year...88 to be exact. It seems the losing streaks are more of a trend then the winning streaks. Where do you see this team finnishing as you assess the talent as is and what do you think the Cards FO could/should do to raise the bar of hope?

THANKS Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: There are plenty of unknowns right now. We've already mentioned them. I would expect quite a bit of change, internally or externally, as the season moves forward UNLESS several veterans pick up their play.

It looks like Ankiel has more life, but Ludwick is still a huge problem.

Zac, TN: Gordo,

I wonder if Bill DeWitt watched the game last night? I wonder if he saw the Cardinals almost get no-hit on national television? I wonder if he saw runners left in scoring position again. Pujols is a monster and without we know where we would be in the standings. Bill Dewitt came out and said a big trade is not what we need now. Well again he will say that again in July when that comes around. Why don't the man get it that with that spark behind Pujols great things will happen. Mark DeRosa was doing two things this series. He was either showing the Cardinals what he's got and telling them to come get him or still showing his hatered for the Cardinals with memorys with the Cubs. Gordo I wish you were the owner and you would get things done! Thanks
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt would love to make a deal, but the only readily available players are guys struggling horribly on other teams. De Rosa IS a nice player. Why the Cubs dealt the guy and spent a fortune on Milton Bradley is one of life's great mysteries.

Donnie B: Hello. Thanks for taking my questions. Like all Blues fans, I am excited for next year. I do have a couple of questions I'd like to get your thoughts on...
1) Keith Tkachuk- Any news on a contract extension? Do you see the Blues bringing him back for the 09-10 season?
2) With the return on EJ on Defense, and Kariya at forward, what moves, either trade or free agency, do you see the Blues needing to make?
3) DJ King - With Janssen here, is there much need for King on the roster?
Jeff Gordon: There wouldn't much for King to do here, as long as Cam is healthy. Cam is a much better all-around player and you noticed that Andy Murray didn't use a tough guy down the stretch last season.

The Blues need to add a strong No. 2 goaltender. And that's it, unless JD can magically move McKee and Kariya off the payroll so he can replace them with another offensive defenseman and a bigger offensive winger.

rich: Jeff: What's the deal with the infielders running halfway into the outfield to catch a fly ball? I know this has happened 3 time sin the last week were Brendon Ryan has almost crashed into the left/right fielder. Used to be the outfielder would call for the ball but watching it closely on T V, I see no one calling for it. Eventually someone is going to get hurt or at the least cost a game like almost happened Sat.

thanks
Rich
Jeff Gordon: Ryan is over aggressive. He needs to back off some of these pop-ups and let the OFs take over.

rdh2210a: Hi Gordo
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. I'm still a little concerned with the rams KR/PR job for next season. I know people say Derek Stanley will be giving first shot, but has Brookes Foster participated in any of the return duties? I think he may be a viable option????
Jeff Gordon: Right now Stanley is it. I ask guys out at Rams Park daily about this and they shrug. Some of the other campers could have potential to return kicks, but Derek is in a great spot now.

Will: I have heard that the Red Sox are looking for a shortstop, and they need a DH for the future. Is there any chance we could trade them Khalil Greene and Brett Wallace for Clay Buchholz? A trade like that would also give the Cards the flexibility to use Boggs as part of a package for an additional bat.
Jeff Gordon: Khalil has been mentioned as a possibility for Boston, but I imagine he would have to play well at this level for a few week before the Red Sox would bite.

Wallace's name will surface a lot of trade talks. If hit from the other side of the plate and had some potential to move to LF, his long-range value here would be greater. At 3B, I see the Cards add RH muscle -- either Freese, Mather or somebody from the outside.

Sa;: wht is all the yelling about bringing up Wallace? this is a second year pro that showed up with 23% body fat after a winter that he was to use to get ready for his first professional season. Looks like a lack of commitment to me, is he mature enough to know what is front of him and what is takes to get and stay here?
Jeff Gordon: Actually, he's only had about one year of pro ball to this point. His conditioning has come a long away since his earlier college days, as evidenced by his ability play 3B in pro ball.

After a fast start at Memphis at the plate, he fell prey to all the junkballers at that level. So he still has much to learn.

I would expect to see him here in September.

BaylorDan: Any idea what the average velocity of a fast ball would be for major league pitchers?
Jeff Gordon: Scouts consider 90 mph to be about average. Of course, there are lots of below-average fastball pitchers out there.

Joe Stafford: Hello Jeff,

Doesn't Spag's have an out clause if the team sells? If so, are we looking at another front office rebuild in the near future?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, he could leave if there is change. But it's not like anything is ready to happen. Even if a suitor emerged, completing a sale and gaining NFL acceptance is quite a process.

Bluff Boy: What up Joe?

Look what the Brewers were able to do when they wen't out and Got CC early last year. I wish the front office will go out and get us some help. It could be that our outfield is not that good. Luddy (One Year Wonder) Rick (K's too much) Duncan (Lost his power). We need some help fast, the Cubs are to stacked to keep playing like this. When we will get some help via a trade? This K. Greene to 3rd talk is making me sick already.
Jeff Gordon: And getting C.C. sure paid off in the postseason. They went "all in" for postseason glory, won one playoff game and lost Sabathia. I doubt the Cards could pay a big price for a rental player the team had no chance to retain.

It's hard to remain in consistent contention year after year making short-term moves like that.

Jeepster: Jeff: I seem to remember you asking me if I was "insane" for properly critiqueing Mozeliak as a poor general manager. As a lifelong Cardinal fan I hate to say I told you so but guess what? Last week Mozeliak claimed he had the green light to make deals and add payroll. This week Dewitt renegged and gave a different response. Once and for all...WILL THE CARDINALS MAKE A DEAL TO IMPROVE THIS HORRENDOUS OFFENSE?
Jeff Gordon: When did DeWitt say there was no money for a trade? The green light is there. It was there last week and it there right now. Money is not the biggest issue. As DeWitt explained there isn't a whole lot available right now. It's not about money, it's about the quality of players available and what the other teams want.

He is not going to make a PR trade. If something is there to help the team, allowing the Cards to fill a need while dealing from a position of strength, then he'll be all for it.

ramfandan: Hi Gordo,
Been reading on the Ram's website the various updates in the Dome (expanded jumbotron in north endzone, the new club/suite sections in south endzone, less announcements on game day and more info on the banner strips that run around the stadium, etc.) Two questions for you : No. 1) Do you know if the new format will still have Jim Holder as the Dome MC? and if so will his role be curtailed in any way ?
No. 2 I sit in lower concourse endzone corner. Do you know if there will be any changes in the sound system speakers? (Audio seems so garbled when sitting at field level)
Thanks for fielding the questions each week Gordo!
Jeff Gordon: I asked about the sound and didn't get the sense there would a huge upgrade this year. I was told improvements have been ongoing in recent years. Maybe some people have noticed the difference, but I sure haven't.

As for Holder, I don't know if he'll have the same role.

Cory Radford: Albert Pujols is the best professional athlete in town. But who rounds out the rest of your top 5?
Jeff Gordon: Hmmmmmm . . .

1) Albert
2) Chris Carpenter
3) Steven Jackson
4) Adam Wainwright
5) T.J. Oshie

Jeepster: At this point why can't the Cardinals simply release Khalil Green? Are the hanging onto him to simply avoid more bad PR directed toward the front office?
Jeff Gordon: If he comes back and hits, then he is an asset. The Cards have to take a look. The lineup Sunday night had just a bit of trouble against Lee. If Khalil comes back and flops again, then the team needs to turn him loose and let him get on with his life.

James: Gordo,

Why can't the Cardinals left handed hitters hit left handed pitching? This isn't a one year thing, this has been going on for 4-5 years. The right handed batters seem to be fine with right handed pitching, a little drop in average but not like the lefties. Other teams don't seem to have the same problem or do they?

James
Jeff Gordon: This team is off-balance, with too many lefties. This is where Glaus' demise, followed by the demise of Freese and Mather, really hurt. Three of their top four OFs are left-handed, as is the second baseman and the part-time third baseman. That is a lot. That has to change.

RCSJR1cardsfan: Mo says one thing that we are going to make a trade, Yet De Witt says no trade and that all is well the team is in good shape and the guys at AAA can fil the gaps. So the ??? is whats it going to be like last year ??? Are we going to make a move or not ??

Ive been a Cards Fan for 50 years and have never until yesterdays article w/ Joe S. been so frustrated w/ a front office that is not even on the same page. At this rate Albert, TLR and Dunc will all move on.. Ive been thru the lows and always suported the team. But this is almost comical the way they are running this Buss. (Cards) into the ground. Concerned Rich Naples FL
Jeff Gordon: Everybody is on the same page. You read what you want to read or don't to read. The Cards are willing to spend money and move assets to make a trade.

But, and we're slow it down here, the . . . national . . . trade . . . market . . . is . . . very . . . quiet . . . at . . . this . . . moment. Most . . . trades . . . don't . . . happen . . . until . . . much . . . closer . . . to . . . the . . . trade . . . deadline.

There will be exceptions, of course. And maybe something will pop up soon.

FloTrain: As much as I'd love to see a trade or an addition of an impact bat, taking DeWitt's view you almost can understand why they haven't yet.... If you look back to the potential lineup the Cards could have with EVERYONE healthy, you see an Ankiel-Pujols-Ludwick-Glaus-Greene-Molina lineup 2-7... Are you kidding me? That is absolutely ridiculous!!! 5 of the 6 have the potential for 20+ homeruns, Rasmus could ease in at the 9 hole instead of at 2 or 4. (Who'd a thought him at 4 in the offseason?)...
Am I wrong or did Glaus say he was good to go at the Winter Warmup? Then comes out and says he needs surgery?!?! Ankiel and Luddy miss time and haven't got on track, Rasmus gets thrown straight in the fire, Greene has his issues... If your DeWitt and Mo, with that lineup are you thinking of adding anyone?
DeWitt has about, what 20M doing absolutley nothing.. And I bet he HATES seeing 4M of that in Oakland hitting over .300 right now... To me, you can't blame him or Mo (yet) for the shape of the offense. With the 180 the bullpen is doing from last year AND that lineup, Cards might have a double digit lead right now.......
Jeff Gordon: Excellent point. People scream at DeWitt, but he has a quarter of the payroll doing nothing. That is the big story, not the alleged unwillingness to spend more right now.

Brett Rugen: In the offseason, the fans were told that payroll could not be expanded because tickets sales were excpected to be below 3,000,000. I heard that the other day that ticket sales will be over 3,200,000. If that is the case, why will payroll not be increased (as Dewitt announced). Secondly, why does Mo lie to the fans on a weekly basis?
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt has consistently said he would increase payroll for the right deal this summer. Trouble is, there is little worth discussing on the market right now. THAT is the point he made over the weekend.

When did Mozeliak lie to the fans?

What are you talking about?

Cory Radford: When are the Rams going to release their 2009 Training Camp schedule? I know a lot of fans plan vacation time around it and we are getting close.
Jeff Gordon: It will be interesting to see how much the Rams do for public consumption this summer. I believe they need to do a lot, but I don't know that the football side sees it that way.

Chris: Does anyone know what really happened with the Pronger rumor from Friday? Who are the Blues most likely to pick up before the season starts? Any big names?
Jeff Gordon: I can see Pronger going to the Kings, perhaps in a deal different that the one speculated about. The D-man Johnson has inflated salary expectations, so I don't know of the Ducks could take him back in a deal.

I see the Blues landing one of the several desirable GTs on the market. Adding Erik Johnson, Eric Brewer and Paul Kariya to a team that finished the season on fire will do lots of good. To add anybody else of note, the Blues would have to offload big salaries.

redbirdswin: Any updates on Troy Glaus? Has he picked up a bat yet?
Jeff Gordon: Forget about Glaus. Even if he somehow made it back on a baseball field this year, the Cards would be best off dealing him to an AL as a DH.

redbirdswin: Do you think LaRussa and Duncan will look hard at keeping Thompson in the rotation even when Lohse returns? How many more bad outings from Wellemeyer or good outings from Thompson will it take?
Jeff Gordon: That was a very impressive outing by Thompson. TLR likes the guy. If he throws anything like that on subsequent starts, he'll stick in the rotation. Lohse is out for quite a while, so Brad will get every chance.

marpdagn: Hey, Gordo. Everyone (including me) has been bashing the FO for their failure to acquire a needed component to help the team (A BAT, MO!!). From another angle, few would argue that the Cardinals are overachievers, due mostly to having the best manager in the game pulling every string he can to get the best out of a bad situation. My question is, next year, after we lose TLR because of DeWitt's unwillingness to expand payroll, what is the new manager going to get out of this team? Myself, I see a return to the '70s. Oh, well, at least there will be good seats available.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will keep putting highly competitive teams on the field. The problem is the total payroll, but the percentage of the payroll that is doing nothing. Last year it was about 33 percent, this year it is at 25 percent. I'd love the see Cards take the field with a $90 million payroll of ACTUAL LIVING, BREATHING, PRODUCING players.

The Cards have only $50 million committed to players after this season, so there will ample opportunity to upgrade in a buyer's market.

Will: Two interesting names have been rumored to make good football sense, but not necessarily good public relation sense in St. Louis, Michael Vick and Brandon Marshall. Of the two I think Vick would be the safer pick due to the fact that he has served his punishment for his crime and since being a better traditional qb has been the biggest knock againgst him, Bulger could be a good tutor. Marshall could also benefit from Buger as well, but he seems to be on the incline with his immaturity and not the decline, although he is a very talented receiver. Both are relatively young still and if in the right situation could dramatically improve their careers/images. Spags is supposed to be the no nonsense type of coach and we could definitely use either or both of the players right now. So my question is two part, if we were to pick one which one and, do you think that the Rams are in any position to to be picky on talent considering our recent record and history of keeping players with felonies?
Jeff Gordon: Spags wants to change that history. Hence his lack of interest in either player. Of the two, Vick has less appeal given his inability to run a West Coast offense. Also, there is the small matter of his NFL suspension to overcome.

redbirdswin: Thank goodness the other teams in the NL Central are playing as badly as the Cards have of late - Cincy has dropped 4 in a row, the Cubs continue to struggle at .500 and the Brewers haven't been able to widen their division lead. That said - which team(s) do you think are simply mired in a slump and will "break out" at some point, and which one(s) do you think will continue to struggle all season?
Jeff Gordon: All these teams can play much better. I still think the Cubs are the team to beat, given their offensive upside. Notice that the other NL Central teams haven't been able to fill holes during the last few weeks.

That underscores how little has been on the trade market so far this season.

jkgeorge: Jeff,
I really think the Rams have an opportunity to move forward this year, based on scouting reports I think we have everything we need.
I believe the 53 man roster is already in place.
I think we are OK at RB and WR with what we have to choose from.
My only concern would be SLB, can Grant, Vobora or any other fill that gap?
Jeff Gordon: The 53-man roster is anything but set. And LB is an area that could still be addressed. The Rams like Grant, but it is very early.

Fun Bobby: Good afternoon! So just watching the NL Central struggle, I see that if the cards could get on a little streak, they could really give themselves so breathing room. that being said, how much longer do you think they will put up with wellemeyer? i loved your idea about going after pedro (or even go after glavine?). even if these guys give you only 5 or 6 innings, isnt that what wellemeyer is doing? at least their 5 innings hopefully wont result in 4 or 5 runs each time.

The other point I would like to make is wow, Derosa really would look good in a cards uniform. Your thoughts on that happening, especially after the series with the Indians.

Thank you for your time.
Jeff Gordon: DeRosa is coveted by many teams and he is producing. Cleveland will rake it in when the time comes to hold that fire sale. Wouldn't it be nice to take Lee off their hands?

When Wellemeyer complained about his loss of velocity, that was another red flag. Vote for Pedro!

Harlin Hutchison: Your Gordness:

I'm sure when you think of great clean-up hitters, three names immediatley
come to mind: Willie McCovey, Tony Perez, and of course, Nick Stavinoha.
Do you find it comical the way this organization gets away with their approach to "addressing" needs?
Why doesn't the Bean Counter at the top just be honest with the fans and say, "Look, we aren't spending ANYTHING that is going to boost payrole significantly. We are the Royals-East."
I could have more respect for management if they were honest with the fans instead of this stuff about looking for help that fits payroll constraints, blah blah blah.
How about the straight talk approach, Gordo?
Jeff Gordon: Royals East?

The Royals have lost 104, 106, 100, 93 and 87 games the last five seasons. They are six games under .500 now.

What are you talking about?

tone-dog: And now, for something completely different:
Why does baseball allow for 6 teams in the Central division and 4 in the Western division? Why don't teams like the Cards protest this as an unfair advantage for winning? Houston does not have any rivalries like the Cards/Cubs/Milwaukee teams do, why don't they go to the West and even things out? They played in the West before realignment. Heck, remember when Atlanta and Cincinatti were in the West and Cards and Cubs were in the East, so geographics don't factor. Same for the AL! Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: There are five teams in the NL West and five teams in the NL East. With 16 NL teams, the extra team goes somewhere.

Ron Pour: I had a real problem with a comment by Joe Morgan last night that I hope is not a shared feeling by any true baseball fans. He said on the pitch that was called strike three on Tyler Greene, that was 4 inches outside of the strike zone and with Yadier Molina at third, that Cliff Lee earned that call. I'm sorry but when Koby Bryant has a good night shooting the basketball if one of his shots goes half way down in the cylinder and pops back out they don't give him the basket. It insults the integrity of the whole game of baseball by making a ridiculous statement like that. The home plate ump made appx 4 of the worst called strikes I've seen in some time and if Cliff Lee has him as a home plate ump the rest of the season he has no chance of losing a game again! What is your opinion of the "earned that call statement"?
Jeff Gordon: That wasn't the worst pitch of the night. But . . . a rookie can't stand there with his bat in his hands and get called out on strikes with a runner on third and one out.

His open stance encourages pitches to work him away. So he better be ready to get out there and hit that pitch, even if it's off the plate a bit.

Max: Hi Jeff,
Bernie had an article out today regarding Pujols and his next contract with the Cardinals. Do you feel that we are going to be sitting here two years from now happy that Ownership extended his contract or should we all start ordering new pacemakers now to help us with the stress of Pujols heading to free agency after the 2011 season? I would imagine part of the reason the Cardinals have been hesitant to add long term, big dollar contracts over the last few years is in large part due to the understanding by ownership of how important it is to have the financial means to extend Pujols...correct?
Thanks,
Max
Jeff Gordon: This team committed long-term dollars to Carpenter and Lohse, along with lesser dollars for Molina and Wainwright. But, yes, the team has left money in the vault for Albert. Just give him Glaus' money going forward and his salary shoots up into ManRam territory.

The money is there. The Cards need to offer him a highly competitive extension. If he passes on top dollar, he passes -- but put it on the table.

B-Ball Fan: I was litening to our GM Mo yesterday morning and wondered why he got so testy when he was asked about arranging for an interview with Troy Glaus. is he afraid Glaus would let us know he won't be back this year ?
Jeff Gordon: I believe he is tired of the whole Glaus situation. He would like to fill that hole and move on. If Troy manages to come back in some form, then deal him to an AL team as a DH.

DJK: Could you give what you believe are the percentages for the following options?

A. Cards pick up 3rd baseman.
B. Cards pick up outfielder.
C. Cards do neither and wait for Glaus.

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Pick a third baseman: 100 percent.
Pick up an outfielder: 20 percent.
Wait for Glaus: 0 percent.

ramboy81: hey' gordo . why don't the rams go after the bill wr roscoe parrish..........
Jeff Gordon: Right now the team is fine with what's on hand.

pujols05: Gordo,

Why does Duncan still consistently get the playing time that he does? At one point last week, Rasmus was carrying the team going 15 for his last 32 AB's. The next game Duncan gets the nod. I understand match-ups and past successes against certain pitchers. However, Colby is head & shoulders above defensively & swinging a hot bat. Duncan can't play D, it even looked like last week Carp was irritated with him when he couldn't get to the ball down the left field line against the marlins. He doesn't hit for power anymore. What's the deal? Thank you!
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus still has tough days at the plate, but, yes, the Cards need to stress OF defense and curtail Chris' time out there. He isn't hitting enough to offset his lack of OF range.

Dave: Gordo,

In an interview published here the other day, Dewitt stated that the goal every year is for 3 million in attendance. Then as an afterthought, added, and to field a competetive team. Is there really any hope to add talent/payroll when a competetive team is the afterthought. Welcome the next reclamation project to St. Louis...
Jeff Gordon: His ownership record speaks for itself.

pat: Once again, it looks like the Cards will not do anything to improve this team. They obviously need at least one bat. During the Jocketty days, there was always the chance that there would be a trade to improve the team, whether it was McGwire, Edmonds, Rolen, Walker, or whoever. You always knew that the possibility existed to improve the team.

But since Jocketty left, it seems like there is no interest in improving the team. Sure, ownership says things in the offseason, but it never amounts to anything.

For me, look at the records and post-season performances of the Jocketty era and the post-Jocketty era to see which plans are better. Of course that's not really fair, since the post-Jocketty era has never been to the playoffs (and looks like they are going to miss it again due to lack of help).
Jeff Gordon: The team finished below .500 in Walt's last year. He left a team full of injured and aging veterans. Perhaps Walt would have cleaned that up more quickly than Mozeliak has, but we'll never know.

How many of the deals you mentioned occurred in early June, before teams started bailing?

tone-dog: Why on earth would they send out a position player (Barden) and bring up a 14th pitcher that doesn't pitch--while they are playing with a DH, which allows a team to carry fewer pitchers--and strips the team of having extra (RH) batters to face the Cliff Lee's of the world? Why Walters and not Shane Robinson or Allen Craig?
Is this totally insane or is it just me?
Jeff Gordon: The guys you mentioned aren't hitting well enough to make a difference. Neither is Barden. I think 13 pitchers are too many, especially with an off day sitting there, but it's not like this team is keeping a heavy hitter from coming here.

tone-dog: Why Walters and not Boggs or Kinney?
Jeff Gordon: Fair questions. Walters is just a long-inning mop-up option in case a game goes horribly wrong. The other two could still become impact pitchers this season.

tom: Joe Mather got off to a good start, rehabbing recently with an 8 for 20 b.a. How is he doing now after another week at AAA?
Jeff Gordon: Just one for his last 16 AB.

CP: Jeff--

I am not a big fan of the concept of trading young (and inexpensive assets) for Chris Pronger. What are the percentages that Blues management follows through on this?
Jeff Gordon: I'm not a fan of such a deal. Get Brewer back. Get Johnson back. Keep developing Polak. Clear room for Cole in a year. Keep developing the kids until you have a critical mass. The team is not there yet.

w.champion: Gordo, as it said in the Post on Sunday it does not look like the Cardinals will be adding any help. My question, what is wrong with these fans? Are they truely sheeple? Also, which team do you think Pu will sign with: Boston, New York or LA? He has said he will sign with a "contender".
Jeff Gordon: That's right, DeWitt came out and said the team is never, EVER, adding additonal help. I read that too. Couldn't believe it . . . because that's not what the story said.

zuke: Realisticly, is there anybody who can actually "protect" Pujols.

As a pitcher, (if you decide to pitch to him) you are not going to throw Pujols any different pitches becasue somebody different is on deck. In fact, I am suprised he gets as many pithces as he does.

I really don't think it matters who is on deck. The decision is whether or not to pitch to the best hitter in the game. I would take my chances with Maur, Youkalis, or anybody else in baseball.

All the cards need somebody else who is capable of driving in runs. DeRossa would work. Unfortuantly, Albert is too good to be protected.
Jeff Gordon: There is some truth to that -- there are few, if any, hitters on his level. Anybody behind him will be a lesser hitter.

virginiatom: I know its early, but how has Bulger looked so far in the OTA's? Of him and Boller, who looks more crisp? Also, does Burtons hamstring problems already forshadow a guy who cant stay healthy?
Jeff Gordon: The folks watching the Rams say he's looked OK, but then nobody has hit him in the mouth in a while.

TOM: Gordo,

I am far from a DeWitt basher. In fact, more times than not I understand where he is coming from. He is a business owner, a successful on at that, and many of his decision that anger Cardinal Nation are simply solid business decisions. All that being said...seems like we need help badly. it's a bit of a slap in the face to fans when he throws out comments about his willingness to add payroll, then amazingly there are just no players out there that fit out needs and are available. BS. I'm not one for giving away too many prospects or breaking the bank for marginal talent but i refuse to believe that if put together a serious offer $$$$ for Beltre or Tejada, that they couldn't be had. i just don't buy it anymore. thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards could make a stupid trade today, but why bother?

Any fan of baseball knows that the activity in late July is a lot different than mid-June. The Cubs and Brewers hit similar ruts and there isn't much out there for them, either.

Tejada is interesting. If there is a way to get him without losing somebody important for the near term (Wainwright and Rasmus come to mind), then great.

Jay: Hey Gordo,

Wasn't Bill Dewitt a former partner and good friend to George W. Bush. Every idea Bush had was a disaster and turned out to be dead wrong and highly unpopular. Maybe some of that capacity to do everything the exact opposite way it should be done has rubbed off on Dewitt. Cut payroll to save money (taxs cuts for the wealthy) ignore and probably run off a highly successful manager (ie: Colin Powell),repeatedly hurt the moral of the players by not giving them help (troops in Iraq) and ultimately kill the fan base to the point where nobody cares (just like the current rebublican party). Of course the worst sin Dewitt could make is not locking up Albert Pujols and assuring he stays his whole career here
just like Stan. There's no parallel here because even Bush wouldn't
be stupid enough to let the best player in the game get away, would he?

Jay
South St. Louis
Jeff Gordon: DeWitt's World Championship was an OK accomplishment.

MotorMike: How much money can we save by dumping K. Greene's salary?
Jeff Gordon: Zero. He is owed every penny.

Adam2: I realize the front office probably wont act on any trade rumors, and that it is harder as some of the teams of these players are playing better. but the names I have been hearing are Holliday, De Rosa, Beltre, Atkins and Tejada. My question is have there been any other names to be rumored to fill either third base, outfield or a starting pitching role?
Jeff Gordon: Actually, a bunch of those Indians could be up for grabs. Would you put Wainwright into a package for Lee? Hmmm . . .

Brian White: How serious are the talks about bringing back Chris Pronger to the Blues?
Jeff Gordon: John Davidson wants him a lot more than I do, but i respect his commitment to win this in 2000-10.

david miller: Thanks for taking my question. Yes it's true we need a bat with some pop from the right side of the field but we also need a starting pitcher(a lefty would be great) but someone who can at least burn some innings and keep the walks down. Any chance we will aquire such a starting pitcher?
Jeff Gordon: I made my pitch for Pedro Martinez, but I'm guessing that all the focus will be on third base. Somehow I don't see Khalil saving the day.

Brian: What do you think the chances are for Chris Pronger returning to the Blues? The rumblings that I have heard is that he wants to come back.
Jeff Gordon: I think he is tired of being shopped by the Ducks, but he IS happy in SoCal.

cburn17: Gordo,

Based on what we are seeing from management and ownership right now, what would you say the chances are of the Cardinals retaining Albert Pujols when his contract is up in 2 seasons? I would say it's 50/50 and moving steadily in the wrong direction....your thoughts?

Bert from Granite City,IL
Jeff Gordon: I'd expect the club to make a competitive financial offer. And I expect the team to keep replacing useless, high-paid veterans with fresh blood -- from inside outside the organization.

So I'd say the odds are better than 50-50.

ogbk20: Gordo, since we all know Dewiit isnt going to authorize anything to increase payroll considering he still believes Glaus is coming back, Could you see MO leaving the organization?
Jeff Gordon: No.

DeWitt is paying Glaus a ton of money, so naturally his view is different. Bill undying believe in Troy is not the reason the Cards didn't make a deal over the weekend. The fact few teams are offering up players is the factor.

kingoftruth: Hey Gordo,

Hossa is a free agent now.
Any interest from the Blues on him? if so, too rich for the Blues blood?
Jeff Gordon: Interesting guy, but signing him to a long-term deal would limit the team's ability to lock in all the young forwards for the long haul.

Brian: I wish Bill Ditwitt would keep his mouth shut. We all know that the cardinals will never make a big trade ever again, but I can't stand when he comes out and tells us that nothing is on the horizon. Because that ruins any chance of a big deal happening in my fantasy world.

Also would someone in the media please tell him that only him and his stats geek think that our prospects are worth anything.

Thank you very little.
Jeff Gordon: If only he and his stat geeks are worth anything -- and if the current how is he supposed to make a big trade? Maybe I'm missing something.

Jesse: It seems like Dewitt yet again is not going to trade for needed bat to protect pujols. Time and time again, its the same thing. its ridiculous. if he isn't going to spend money, why doesn't he just sell the team to someone who cares about winning?
Jeff Gordon: That's not what he said.

"We have some flexibility if the right situation were to occur. We wouldn't have been so sure about that early on."

In order words, there is money to spend.

Greg B.: Gordo:
Will Chris Duncan ever hit another home run? Do you think there are lingering physical problems from his surgery? Is it possible that his power outage is permanent?
Jeff Gordon: It's fair to say that the injury has robbed him of power, yes.

fletch32: Gordo, Winning 5 games the last 2 seasons has taken it's toll on a lot of us fans. Other than the improvements being made to the dome, I feel the organization should be reaching out more to the fans/customers of the team.
Is there anything in the works in as far as showing more appreciation for the fans? I remember last year they had next to no giveaways at the stadium.
They also said that they wanted the new head coach to be a "face" in the community which Spags has been anything but. I attend the NFL draft every year and some of the other NFL teams had representatives there handing out gear/momentos to fans wearing that respective team's apparel.....
Jeff Gordon: Spags isn't super PR conscious because he is focusing on convincing the Rams to block and tackle this year. He'll grow into that side of it.

Rocky: Let me start by saying that I understand why people are upset that the Cardinals are not playing good baseball right now and can't seem to hit their way out of a wet paper bag.It does get frustrating being a fan and watching it. There were a lot of IFs heading into the season and some haven't panned out due to injury and other factors. However I question the people that get so irate because Mo hasn't made a move yet. I question their knowledge of baseball in general. Do they think that we are the only team that has needs? Every team in baseball wants another impact bat. The problem becomes do we have the farm players to bring one in? This is not the baseball of the pre mid90's when there were 2 divisions in each league. Teams are in contention longer now with the wild card so, big, mid June moves rarely occur unless you give up a load of talent the other way.

My question is do you see the Cards making a move before the deadline? By move I don't mean a 4A player but a player that could make some impact? Who of the TOUCHABLE prospects do you see other teams wanting?
Jeff Gordon: Motte, Perez and McClellan would have some value.

Skip would have a little value for the OF. Down the road, Wallace would be a nice chip. Daryl Jones would draw some interest. Maybe Mortensen, too.

Ludwick has arbitration years left, so he would have value if he started hitting again. But if he started hitting again, the Cards wouldn't want to trade him.

patriothater: Is Keenan Burton the real deal or is gonna be another great prospect who spends so much time on the sideline that he's going to be able to retire as a forgotten draft pick
Jeff Gordon: We'll see -- injuries ARE an issue.

JYD: How many wins will win the NL Central this year?
Jeff Gordon: Fewer than I thought -- but I see the Cubs winning at least 90, so . . .

Elis_Dad: J_Gordo,

Do you see the Cards attempt to move K Greene to third base as "white flag" to their efforts of getting a real third baseman and protection for Pujols thru a trade?
Jeff Gordon: They are just taking a look at him, but by no means are the Cards counting on this paying off.

Brian: Gordo,

with the way that ryan, schu, and tyler greene are playing, would it make sense for the future to have those players play ss and 2B with their low salaries and go after a stud 3B or pitcher?
Jeff Gordon: Well, they need a stud third baseman, for sure. But Ryan may be that low-cost SS.

Willie: Gordo,
Play GM for a day...
DeWitt allows you to make one but only one major move and allows you to pay market value with respect to the salary of the acquired player.
How would you improve the current team?
Willie
Jeff Gordon: One move? I'd go for Tejada, as long as it didn't cost the team Wainwright.

mtp823: The Cards enjoy all media talk about who they are going to trade for to improve the offense. Blah blah blah. HOWEVER...at the end of the day we'd be lucky to land Tom Brunansky's son...if he has one? The whiff! Is Bob Horner available?

Nick NovaScotia to the rescue!
Jeff Gordon: No, not available.

Steve: Gordo,

Do you think its possible that AP may be waiting to see if TLR re-ups before he decides if he wants to stay?
Jeff Gordon: Many factors will enter that. TLR wouldn't likely commit past 2011 at this age, so that isn't a big a factor as you would think.

Darrin G.: I would really love to see the Cardinals trade for Matt Holliday. I hear people complaining about his ability to hit away from Coor's Field, however, Holliday's name alone could be enough to grant more protection for AP. Pujols and Holliday both seem to have excellent work ethics, and how do you think they would influence each other as hitters? Also, what do you think the odds are that the Cardinals pull off a move such as this one?
Jeff Gordon: I seriously doubt the Cards can swing that deal, in terms of what it would take to land him and then re-sign him. And dealing for him without extending him would be a huge mistake for a team trying to stay in contention every year.

Art Vandelay: Hey Jeff

With the lack of upgrades to the ball club, What is the likely hood of LaRussa and Duncan managing the Cardinals next season? If not, who would be likely candidates for their replacement outside of the obvious Oquendo?
Jeff Gordon: I see the Cards staying in contention and the staff returning.

Kenny Holt: Since it looks like the Cards are not really going to be buyers this season and they likely don't have the horses to make a real push, how close are the Cards to becoming sellers? Assuming Albert, Carp, and Waino are off the table, who else would have value at this point and what kind of value?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see the Cards folding because they are a half-game off the lead.

jack a roo: Jeff, Wouldn't you agree that the Cards are basically being turned into a AAA team by DeWitt and Mo. 14 rookie call up this yr. already with I'm sure more on the way.
The owners comments in Sunday' paper only prove this point that the Cards aren't willing to trade for anyone of importance to help this team and now with Grnne being moved to 3rd this shows that don't want to improve the team by taking on a vet. and he's salary. If Greene can't play shortstop (he's norm,al position) without problems how can there expect him to play 3rd?
I'm sure Tony L. sees the cheapness being displayed and will not re up for next year, that will be a huge loss for the team unless Oquendo takes over.

thanks
Jac
Jeff Gordon: "We have some flexibility if the right situation were to occur. We wouldn't have been so sure about that early on."
Bill DeWitt, saying the Cards will spend money if the right deal materializes.

nortzman: Jeff;

Is there any indication of which way Spags wants to go with FAs; offense or defense first? And how did Bulger do during the OTAs? Did he look he sharp, or is there some residual effect from last year's beating? Thanks...
Jeff Gordon: Again, he's fine -- but nobody has hit him lately.

eols118: Jeff, Good Afternoon,

With football fast approaching, what is your prediction for the MU Tigers final record and place finish in the Big 12 North?
Jeff Gordon: Mizzou fans should be happy with seven wins and a minor bowl. Too much rebuilding.

cburn17: Gordo,

DeWitt says "don't expect a big trade". Is this posturing to improve out bargaining position or is this really what the fans should expect?

- Bert from GC, IL
Jeff Gordon: "We have some flexibility if the right situation were to occur. We wouldn't have been so sure about that early on."

Bill DeWitt, saying the Cards will spend money when the right deal comes along.

smagsmoker: Hey Gordo,
How long do you think the Cardinals can keep running Wellemeyer out to the mound? He has 4 quality starts in 13 appearances, a 5.50 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. He doesn't give us a chance to win very often. Does LaRussa think he is still one of our best options or does he have a longer leash (no pun intended) due to the contract and some success last year? If it's the former, then it doesn't say a lot about our minor league staff.
Jeff Gordon: I'd rather see Mortensen or Boggs at this point.

sddeck: What re the chances of te Cards landing Holliday from Oakland at the trade deadline?
Jeff Gordon: I'd say that is a long shot, for a ton of reasons. Primary issue: The team has huge 3B and pressing pitching needs, too. OF is not a huge weak weakness, despite the current slump.

BrandonCARDS: Hello Gordo,
Quick question about the MLB draft. Say you draft a high school player( or possibly a college player early in his college career) and can't work out a deal to get him on the team so he goes off to college(or continues). Now does that particular team that drafted him have rights to him first to work out a deal when he ready to come up to the major league? Or does he have to re-enter the draft again? How does that all play out?
Jeff Gordon: In that scenario, the player re-enters.

Kenny: What do you think about hitting Yadi Molina in the lead-off spot. I know he has no speed, but they rarely employ any kind of running game ahead of Pujols anyway, so that shouldn't be a factor. I belive that his ability to work a count and get on base would benefit the top of the order. If they hit the pitcher 9th, he would hit into less double plays because a runner would/should have been sacfificed over to 2nd. At this point, it doesn't hurt to try it.

Your thoughts?

Go Cards!
Jeff Gordon: The Cards need his RBI ability, which, sadly, hasn't been great lately.

Ryan: Cardinals ownership has come out and said essentially that clubs have pulled back on making players available because they are hoping for staying in contention. Why is it that Ownership continually make excuses for not getting deals done? You can't expect fans or insiders such as yourself to agree that an impact BAT cannot be found out there right now if they really were serious. As the summer wears on, do you honestly believe they will make a deal for an impact player (whether its an arm or a bat) or will we be watching the usual suspects (Cubs, Brewers, Phillies, Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, Red Sox) making their big moves and we will be struggling at the .500 mark? Also, how would you grade Mo'z job as GM? Can anyone (media) give an honest grade without fear of being black-balled from the Cards front office?
Jeff Gordon: The Brewers have lost six of seven. Why hasn't that team made a blockbuster deal?

The Cubs are sputtering. Where is their big deal? Are they just making excuses when their GMs point out that few teams are dealing.

Kenny: Jeff - would the cardinals think of putting Albert at 3rd and move Duncan to first or are concerns about Albert's elbow make this an option not warranting any consideration.
Jeff Gordon: You answered the question. The elbow is the issue.

Bill J: What are the chances of the Cardinals possibly getting Mark Derosa? I think this guy would fit in perfect with the cardinals, and he is the type of player Tony would like and the fans would appreciate the way he plays the game.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed, but why would Cleveland deal him.

Ben W: Hi Gordo. Have you heard anything new regarding trading for a 3B or SS? Is Atkins still a possibility given the Rockies' recent win streak?

Thanks,

Ben W.
Jeff Gordon: Colorado is likely to ride this, for the time being. But, sure, that deal might be there later. The longer the year goes, the more you will see teams promote top prospects and move out veterans blocking their path.

Ben W: Also, I forgot to ask, do the Cardinals have any interest in Jake Peavy?
Jeff Gordon: Fans were furious the Cards didn't make that deal. What if the team somehow swung a deal for him, only to see him suffer a major injury. Ouch!

John George: Do you think Dewitt will let Pujols walk when his contract expires? He sure isn't helping the team now!
Jeff Gordon: Albert will get a nice offer. Will it be nice enough?

The Striek: Hey Jeff, thanks for the time. Two things:

1) I've posed this question to many people without getting a straight answer, but Why has Jess Todd been relegated to the bullpen? His numbers were outstanding previously as a starter! Does the organization think that his future can only bu successful in the bullpen, even though he was our minor league player of the year last year?

2) You heard the phrase surrounding the blues the last few years, even though they aren't winning right now, "this team is fun to watch." This Cardinals team is NOT fun to watch. They are kind of vanilla don't you think? I understand getting prospects in, and developing players, but surely, at some point, those prospects have to be sent out in favor of proven big league talent. I find myself this year tuning away from the cardinal games mid-way through, because the lack of offense becomes boring. That could be the reason Dewitt's attendance is down. Its not the economy, its your team on the field being less than entertaining. Agree?
Jeff Gordon: The economy is a bigger issue than the fact the team is a half-game out. But, no, this team hasn't been much fun to watch. The Cards run around a little more, but it's no fun watching guys get called out on strikeouts.

As for Todd, middle relief would be his quickest ticket to the bigs. He did a nice job closing in Memphis before his brief recall.

John George: What do you think will happen to the Cardinals fan base if Dewitt lets Pujols go to Free Agency?
Jeff Gordon: If that happens in 2012, it would be a tough deal. But the team didn't fold when Stan Musial finally retired.

The Striek: Jeff,

any word on the Blues off-season moves? I know they've re-upped Mclement which was great to hear. But in regards to Polak, and Walt, and word on which way they're leaning on some of the other FA's?

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: I sure hope the team brings Tkachuk back. That seems like a no-brainer for one more year.

All this Pronger chatter has fans excited, but I'm not as enthused. I'd like to keep every prospect and go from there.

savoncordion: I think Miguel TEjada is the best bet for getting Pujols some help. what would it take for the astros to let him go?
Jeff Gordon: Yahoo talked about that very topic.

http://sports.yahoo.com/video/player/mlb/Y_Sports_MLB/13901296

BradV: Gordo, can you explain to me what the harm would be in taking a look at Pedro Martinez???.... wouldn't he be the perfect bargain basement deal, or "low hanging fruit" that ownership loves to sign?
Jeff Gordon: I'm with you. He's just sitting there. Go get him!

kevin: I just heard a rumor from someone that used to work in the Blues locker room that the Blues may be trading Oshie to the Pens. Have you heard anything to support this or have any ideas on who we would be getting in return?
Jeff Gordon: Trading Oshie would be insane. And other than Malkin or Croby, which Penguin would you really want back for T.J.

Amrhein: K Greene is now our third base men. Does this mean the Cardinals are not gonna make any kind of trade to improve this horrible offense?
Jeff Gordon: If Greene reverts to his 27-homer form, maybe, MAYBE he would stay over there. Otherwise, internal and external options will be explored.

Patrick Daub Sr.: Okay, so is there any talk of the Cards getting someone? If not, can't the owners come out and just say, hey nothing happening. I think it is worse to lead all of us on, including and especially the players. We need some sort of hitting here Gordo, let me ask this too, what is the likelihood that McRae's days are numbered? I can't remember the last time I have seen such a stagnant offense. Furthermore, what is the likelihood that the players are simply holding out, treading water, playing subpar in order to hasten a trade?
Jeff Gordon: Anybody doing that should be the first to exit in a trade.

The Cubs canned their hitting coach, but TLR has been publicly supportive of his guys.

Max: Hey Jeff,
Lets pretend that Ownership really is committed to getting Albert some protection. Instead of bringing in a overpaid/under preforming player (Atkins or Beltre), a rental that will cost too much after this season (Holliday), or a guy that really does'nt fit the role of "protection" (DeRosa) would'nt in make sense to give Washington a call and see what it would take to get Adam Dunn? Yes, I know, he is LH and they could use a RH bat but 40 plus homeruns and 100 plus RBI year in and year out are nice regardless of what side of the plate they come from. Plus, Dunn is signed through next season which means we don't have to do this "protect Albert" song and dance again next year. Thoughts?
Thanks,
Max
Jeff Gordon: I'm not a Dunn guy. He'll hit some homers, but there is a reason why all the contenders passed on him. He is a one-trick pony and he is no help in the field.

Go Cards: Gordo,

What's with the left handed pitching? Can you advise how the Cards have done against southpaws over the last few years? It seems like we can never hit one. That just strikes me as being very odd. Thanks.

Dan
Jeff Gordon: Given the overabundance of LH hitters, it shouldn't be a shock.

smagsmoker: Hey Gordo,
Since during the season many teams are reluctant to trade due to the wildcard keeping teams in contention until early to mid July, why wasn't a stronger effort made in the off season to fix holes that we had then. No one could foresee the Greene problem at shortstop, however, a 2B, a 3B, and some bench depth was sorely needed then as it is now. We have virtually no pop from any infield position with the exception of Pujols. Now we mostly like have to wait unitl the trade deadline to make a move and we could have put some distant between us and the rest of the pack in the Central due to injury situations among the other clubs mainly Cincy and Chicago. My fear is that by the time we can deal, it may be too late. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Nobody anticipated Glaus aggravating his shoulder injury away from the field AND David Freese getting in a car wreck AND Joe Mather hurting his wrist. Also, the team is surprised that both Ludwick and Ankiel and sputtering at the same time.

NormalGuy: Gordo.
I enjoy the chat each week and thanks for the time as always. I have two questions this week if that is allowed. 1. What are the chances if things continue to go downhill for the Cards (who are what, 16-23 since May 1?) of them actually becoming SELLERS at the trade deadline as opposed to BUYERS like so many people assume? 2. When September call-up season arrives, who will be left to make the trip up to the big club? Aren't we currently fielding about 3/4 of Memphis' roster? Perhaps there is a bat boy or maybe an assistant trainer who has been overlooked or maybe a beer vendor at Memphis has such wicked action on his can-opening move that he will warrant a call to the show come September. Some advisement on this situation would be appreciated.
Jeff Gordon: Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing some combination of Mortensen, Boggs and Todd up here sooner than later to help the pitching staff. So there are Memphis players capable of helping here.

Tom Fowler (tupelo, MS): Thanks Mr Gordon for taking my question. Do you believe the Cardinals have given up on getting a 3rd baseman with some power by moving green to 3rd base?
Jeff Gordon: No.

bigheadred: What is your position on the move of K. Green to third base? Or is there something else on the horizon in way of trade or other alternatives?
Jeff Gordon: Still looking.

Amrhein: Gordo ,

This was in the sporting news power poll . What do you think?

9. Cardinals (10). Help from the front office was non-existent last season, and the Cardinals faded out of the race. Will this season be a repeat?
Jeff Gordon: If the Cards could add a .385 hitter capable of playing 3B, as they did last season with Felipe Lopez, La Russa would be thrilled.

Linda: What are the chances of the Cards trading Chris Duncan for a third baseman? Or has his poor hitting as of late devalued him?
Jeff Gordon: You're right, not much value there.

Jeepster: Jeff: How would the Cardinals be making a move for PR reasons only if they deal for some help? Do you not see the offensive problems this team has?
Jeff Gordon: There are deals just to make a deal and then there are smart deals. Hard to make a smart deal now and end up better.

Max: Hey Jeff,
How much value do you think Chris Duncan currently has to other teams (especially in the AL!!!) and would the front office seriously consider dealing him with his Dad as pitching coach?
Thanks,
Max
Jeff Gordon: He needs to hit HR and boost that average to have DH value.

Armen Dacity: Jeff,

Could the Rams structure a long-term deal for O.J. Atogwe in a manner that would open up significant cap space to add another free agent from among the remaining available veterans. If so, what kind of money are we talking about?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams will surely want to create cap space with such contracts, but the goal is to clear space for several years to rebuild over time.

Max: Hey Jeff,
I understand the need for a 3B, especially a RH hitting 3B. But lets be honest, the choices out there are not really that appealing. Why not try for a guy like Adam Dunn? Washington would have to consider moving him with as bad as they are. Yes, he is a LH hitter and an outfielder but he is also a 40 home run, 100 RBI guy with a high OBP as well. Oh, and he is signed through next year too which means we don't have to do this "how do we protect Albert" song and dance again next year!
Thanks,
Max
Jeff Gordon: I'd be shocked if Dunn offered much protection. .258 BA with 67 Ks -- no thanks.

goosehead: What about Brandon Wood? He is a right-handed power bat that can play the left side of the infield. He may not have the immediate huge offensive impact the club is looking for, but his bat is likely at least as good as someone like Atkins or even Beltre at this point. The Angels clearly do not have a spot for him right now. He would not be a rental but a long-term investment. If Wallace develops into a solid third basemen, he can play short. Whole lot of different upsides here. My questions are, is this something the front office is remotely considering? Would it be feasible with the Angels? What would it take to get him? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: That sort of deal is certainly in line with Mo's game plan. But is this guy better, long term, than Freese?

tom: Jeff: What are the changes that Hal McRae gets canned like the hitting coach in Chi town? Also do you think if he was canned this would wake up some bats?

Tommie
Jeff Gordon: That, to me, is a scapegoat move. I just asked Rick Hummel about that and he said he would be surprised if Tony did that.

MattM: You've mentioned Wainwright as trade possibility for CLiff Lee. Not that it would ever happen, but if we held an auction for a guy like Wainwright, who buys? If we wanted Major League proven talent, what could we get in return? If we asked for Minor League / almost Major League ready talent, who could we ger?
Jeff Gordon: You could get a young all-star at most positions for a guy like Adam. But the Cards have three rotation holes right now, so no deal there will happen.

Garrett: You mentioned earlier if you had one move to make, you'd go for Miguel Tejada as long as Wainwright was not involved. Are the Astros asking for Wainright? That would be outrageous. In your opinion, who would likely be heading to houston among our stable of overrated prospects?
Jeff Gordon: Perez isn't overrated. Motte isn't overrated. McClellan isn't overrated. D. Jones, Wallace, perhaps T. Greene . . . there are some assets building.

Dave: Hey Gordo
My question regards your thought of the cardinals draft. Shelby Miller seems like a steal at 19 but some of the other picks were questionable. Your thoughts of who might be the best in the long run and who was the biggest steal?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards went right back to the college venue after the first pick. That makes some folk groan. But we've seen a lot of Luhnow picks from college develop quickly.

1buschstadiumplz: What's your estimate on the financial windfall for the team if it wins a WS? Break it down by playoff series. Part of me wonders if the owners are really passionate about taking it all.
Jeff Gordon: There is no much windfall from the actual playoff series an world series, but such success boosts revenues for the long haul has massively upgrades franchise value.

Max: Hey Jeff,
What is your best guess for the back of the rotation next season? My guess is Pinerio wont be back. I think Wellemeyer has some arbitration years left however assuming he continues the way he has been they couldnt bring him back for another go could they??? Do you think the Cardinals would look outside the organization for a #4 and 5 starter or would we give Mortenson, Garcia, Boggs, etc. a shot to crack the starting rotation?
Thanks,
Max
Jeff Gordon: Carpenter, Wainwright, Lohse for sure. Then I'd put McClellan there. Then I'd put Garcia in there, with Mortensen, Boggs, Hawksworth and Walters would battling it out if he isn't healthy.

ogbk20: Gordo, We all know the Blues need a speedy defensemen that can play the transition game..we all know Prongs fit's the bill but what about Jay Boumeister?..this is a guy I would love to have..rumor is he wants to play in canada but would the FO be willing to aggressivley pursue this guy?
Jeff Gordon: E. Johnson is the speedy D of which you speak. Pietrangelo has big offensive upside, too. Brewer would help, if healthy. Add those three to last year's group and it is different.

chris: Jeff, what would you consider a successful first season for Spags as the Rams' headcoach? I'm going to say that 5 wins would be a good year.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed -- IF the Rams are competitive in their losses. This is a big, big job.

Linda: It seems to me that the Cards need to get back to basics at the plate. They seem to be overthinking each pitch and anticipating the wrong pitch. What can McRae do to get them to see the light?
(Naturally, Albert is the exception.)
Jeff Gordon: Like Hal said, the hitters are "in between." He can talk his head off and show them video, but the guys needs to regain some confidence and relax.

rich: You don't have to publish this.....
Just want to take the time to thank you for answering my questions and everyone elses questions here on Monday's afternoons.

Rich
Jeff Gordon: Glad to be here.

MMeyer: Why does it seem tougher for left handed hitters to hit off a lefty pitcher, but right handed batters don't seem to have as much trouble with right handed pitchers. Shining example Cliff Lee last night. I know he is an exceptional lefty and we struggle with left handers period, but I wanted to puke at every swing and miss on a low and away slider to a lefty last night.
Jeff Gordon: Lefties don't see a lot of lefties growing up. That is pretty much it.

Adam2: Hi Gordo, do you see any pitcher in our minor league system that could turn into a dominant force in the late innings whether setting up or closing? I guess what im asking is do you think we have any possible all star arms in our minor league systems?

Thank you
Jeff Gordon: Other than Perez, Motte and McClellan?

Jeremy: Thanks for doing a live chat Jeff. We've all heard this before about ownership going is going to get help and nothing happens. We really need a guy at 3B. Or a right handed guy that can hit lefty pitching. The Cards just stink against lefties and have for a few years. Will help actually come or will we be given the same treatment as last year and the year before... Hope and wait for things to get better! Hope only goes so far before the names of Clement, Mulder, Glaus come to mind. You know and I know, Glaus is done for the year. Whos the better fit, Tejada, DeRosa, or Holiday? Eating some money is fine, since there on pace to sell 3.2 million tickets and payroll is down $10 million.
Jeff Gordon: Eating money alone won't get you players of that caliber. Teams will want a done for each. Not sure the Cards have enough.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

I have noticed that you bring Wainwright up a LOT in trade discussions. I presume you are using that to make your point that teams will not be dealing with us unless we are using our biggest chip.

It is my understanding that Waino is to play a larger role in our success than everyone aside from Albert. Does the organization hold a different view?

I have to say, if we are going to move Wainwright, I need to see Lincecum, Longoria, Braun, HanRam or the like coming back in return. Your mention of Wainwright for Tejada scared the heck out of me! I would hardly move Mortensen for Tejada.
Jeff Gordon: The point is, Wainwright has huge value to this franchise. The falloff in young starting pitching is so dramatic, that it will to hard to satisfy other teams. Starting pitching the top commodity to deal and this club is not well off in that category.

Jordan: Hey Gordo,
Do you see he cardinals moving Ankiel if he continues heating up and starts hitting a few more home runs? What would be a reasonable return for Rick if he continues improving, and who would be next in line for a shot at the big league level to take his space?
Jeff Gordon: He has an expiring contract, so that limits his trade value to a degree. Long-term. Daryl Jones or Jon Jay would be possible OF replacements if they don't move in other deals.

Dwayne Roy: Gordo

Thanks for taking our questions. I respect your opinion and honesty. With that being said I am going to ask you a tough question so please, "tell it like it is". Chris Duncan seems to be a great kid and a hard worker and Dave Duncan is an excellent pitching coach. I like to give credit were credit is due. Despite what I have just said I cannot figure out why Ludwick, Ankiel and Rasmus have to split basically equal playing time with Duncan. It makes no sense to me what so ever. Ludwick proved himself last year and he needs at bats to get back into a groove after his injury. I haven't missed a game this year and his so called slump is overrated. He has hit the ball on the nose for tough outs on several occasions. My gosh, play the guy everyday. Ankiel is now hot and does not need to sit out (he can carry a team for a couple of weeks) and Rasmus may be the best overall player of the four. Duncan is not player offensively or defensively that the other three are. Again, I have nothing against the kid but he should not be playing as much as he is. I will never be more than a .260 hitter with 10 to 15 home runs and we all know his defensive limitations in the outfield. Give the kid a break. Get him away from his dad and TLR and all the nepotism criticism that goes with this situation whether it is legit or not. Trade him to an A.L. team so that he can play in a better situation than what he has here in St. Louis. Even his own mother has stated that she wished that he didn't play in St. Louis because of the pressure that goes with playing for Big Dunc and TLR.
Jeff Gordon: If Ludwick would hit like he did last year and Ankiel hit like he did last year and if Rasmus keeps coming, then, yes, at bats for Chris should be scarce -- unless HE hits.

zuke: Everybody keeps talking about Pujols leaving for a team that is more dedicated to winning. If that is true, which team has had a more successful run at "winning" than the cardinals? I think fans say this without thinking about it. Do the Mets really have a better orgizational approach than the cards? If fans would put away their bias against DeWitt, they would learn that the cardinals have one of the best reputations in baseball. Not saying that he stays, but rather give this organization some credit.

Along those lines, If this team wants to keep pujols, doesn't it make more sence to keep your top prospects (serious contributors in 2010 and 2011), then deal them for rentals in 2009?
Jeff Gordon: The more of those kids develop, the more money there is for Albert and the more money there is for real help. Paying for band-aids is what kills you.

stloufan5: A couple of quick things, why do the cardinals name names on their targets? Why would they come out and say "we want X player"? Why has the names of DeRosa and Holliday been leaked to the public? Doesnt this run the cost of said player up?

Did you notice in Saturday's game after Pujols hit the second home run, he came into the dugout and sat down with Dave Duncan and showed him exactly what Chris Duncan was doing. It looked as if Pujols was mocking Chris Duncan's swing to a tee, and he was explaining to him what Chris needed to work on. Seems like that should have been a conversation to have with Chris or Hal?
Jeff Gordon: The media brings up the name. It's not Mozeliak is holding a news conference to list players he wants.

As for the dugout stuff, you're probably reading too much into that.

Linda: What happened to Mike Parisi?
Jeff Gordon: Got hurt.

adam_cruts: Jeff, I asked this last week but I think you were done answering questions prior to my question. I keep hearing (including this week) saying that the first people you would trade are the ones that are "waiting/complaining for trade help to come." I think that seems to be an unfair statement considering that Albert Pujols is probably the main culprit making statements that he will only stay if the team remains competitive. Are you stating that Albert should be the first one traded? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Not at all. Albert keeps competing. If there are playing shutting down while waiting for a deal or hoping to force a deal, THOSE players need to go ASAP. Those are the players that derail a franchise.

adam_cruts: Jeff, Adam Dunn's numbers seem to speak for themselves. Halfway to 100 RBI already, and 17+ homers already this year, for a team without any legitimate bats outside of Zimmerman. I understand the concern with his fielding ability (or lack thereof), but a perennial 40 hr 100 rbi guy behind Albert wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, would it?
Jeff Gordon: He weakens you in the OF, fails to address the inability to hit lefties and doesn't fill an acute need position.

I'd rather have an OF of Ludwick, Rasmus and Ankiel catching everything and a better offensive 3b.

joenstl: If the cards believe that Albert may leave nd sign elsewhere, what could the cards get in a trade for Big Al ?
Jeff Gordon: A couple of blue-chip young starting pitchers, a power-hitting OF prospect and a couple more position players.

ogbk20: Ok Gordo..Brewer is a 3rd line Dman at best on this team. I realize what EJ can do, BUT we need to go outside of the organization for another Dman. Our defense was exposed in the playoffs and Ej isnt enough to take us to say the WCF. Will the Blues make a move..Bouwmeister anyone?
Jeff Gordon: Florida wants a No. 1 pick for his negotiating rights -- and other teams may pay that. So, no, that doesn't look like a good fit.

williemcgee51: Gordo,

If this team were to fall out of contention with their brutal July schedule, would you see the value in shopping Chris Carpenter? If proven healthy, he would be a CC Sabathia type addition for an eager team. I have to believe the Phillies, Mets, Dodgers, Yankees, Rangers, White Sox, etc. would be all too eager to secure their success by adding Carp.

I know Carp is a TLR guy. And a STL guy. When healthy, I'd take him over any other pitcher. He's got the arm and he's got the mindset. But he also has the medical reports. It's no secret that his contract paralyzes this team when he is on the DL. If we got a fair return via trade, and spent his money on the free agent market, I have to believe this team could still compete for the division with a healthy Wainwright and Lohse in 2010 and beyond.

My question for you is: What is a fair return for Carp?
Jeff Gordon: A young blue-chip starting pitcher, plus a potential all-star position player.

StubbyClapp: Gordo, two topics: (1) What are the chances of Clayton Mortenson being called up with Lohse out for another 3 weeks and Wellemeyer struggling? How much of a role does Thompson play into that decision? (2) When we promote someone from Memphis for the first time, does it raise the payroll by the league minimum (I think about $400,000)? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: If a guy comes up, somebody goes down -- so that doesn't impact payroll unless the spot is created by a DL move.

Jeremy: If Tejada is making 13 million this season, and the season is just about half over, how much would the cards be on the hook for if a deal was to occur, assuming the cards weren't going to eat all the salary? I guess what I'm trying to say, is how much have the Astros paid for Tejada this year so far?
Jeff Gordon: It's pro-rated. If the Astros deal the guy, odds are that club will pay at least half is deal for this year.

bshivepoker: gordo..

i guess i dont understand what "UNTOUCHABLE" means...if you can get a proven major leaguer for someone who maybe has "potential", i would run, not walk, to the phone and make the deal.

if someone (Cleveland, for example) wanted Wallace, Todd, and Daryl Jones for Cliff Lee and DeRosa, to me its a no brainer, because "the future " is basically a crapshoot. Some guys pan out, but most dont.
Jeff Gordon: Why would Cleveland make that deal? That would be nuts. Throw Wainwright in, for starters.

Jeff: Hey there Gordo,
All of this talk from fans on who they want us to bring in. All i want is a guy who doesn't strike out. It seems like some of our guys surrounding Pulojs have HIGH strikeout numbers. Do you know where we rank among the Majors or even just the NL in that category?
Jeff Gordon: That's a big issue -- one that Khalil certainly won't solve.

jordan@AE: Gordo, I was wondering how the Cards are going to continue their run with the starting rotation looking like this. Welle is done or should be and Lohse could leave us waiting all season. We could replace Welle with Glavine for real cheap, give us that Lefty SP and the fill Lohse's place with Pedro. ( all for under 6 million ) Those two would give us a better chance to win. Out of all the Bats available. Derosa is the only guy we should expect to land in STL.
Remember the last big deal we pulled off was Walker in 04 ... Your thoughts ???
Jeff Gordon: Glavine is worth a look. You know my position on Pedro.

That's it -- I'm whipped!

This was a new record for me, I believe. Sorry I didn't hit them all.
