Fresno Ram Fan: Hey jeff,

I was just wondering how Torry's mindset is now that OTA's are completed. Is his knee healthy in your opinion? Wanted to know how do you think the Ram fans in STL will react when Bruce comes back to town? Believe me, when we go to SF, he wont be hearing Bruuuuuce but Boooooooooos. thnx for keeping us Ram fans in CA updated.
Jeff Gordon: Rams fans ought to applaud Bruce. After all, the Rams opted to terminate his deal and make him a free agent. How hard did the team really try to re-sign him? If fans want to boo, they should boo team management. As for Torry, we'll see. He needs to shake off the 3-13 finish like everyone else. He will have to "manage" his knee problems for the rest of his career. I believe he will enjoy playing in this offense for Saunders.

Dave Cobler: Hi Gordo;
Thank you for taking time for me on your show.
My question concerns the Colby Rasmus factor. Since Rasmus knows he is a shoe in, in the big clubs outfield in the very near future, it just seems to me the Cards should bring him up and let him play himself on or off the 25 man roster. Although always dangerous when they come up to the plate, Duncan and Ankiel are not lighting it up much. Rasmus time is getting closer, which means someone is going to have to go. How do you see the Rasmus factor developing in the over all scheme of things today? Who do you think is the odd man out?

Thanks again Jeff! Your faithfulness to us sports fans is very much appreciated. You do a great job!
Jeff Gordon: There is no rush with Colby. He will make the big leagues. The organization has the luxury of letting him gain the normal amount of experience before bringing him up. When he is hitting like Jay Bruce, the team will play him here. When that happens, the team will have to make choices. Obviously Duncan faces an uncertain future because of all the lefties. Ludwick and Ankiel look like fixtures, because of their power/defense combo, and Schumaker is very handy. After that, Mather's versatility makes him ore attractive than Barton.

But that pecking order can change, according to accomplishment. And there is no telling what sort of trade opportunities will emerge.

Jayman: Hey Jeff..with Chris Carpenter maybe having another shoulder surgery is it time or possible that he may look to retire instead of having shoulder surgery???
Jeff Gordon: His problem is with his elbow -- and it is not a major problem. In fact, it is fairly common with ligament replacement cases. While his return this year is in doubt, his long-term prognosis remains solid.

Warren Arnold: Hi Gordo,

What is the most likely to happen:

1) The Cards trade for Sabathia
2) The Cubs trade for Sabathia
3) The Cards trade for someone of impact
4) The Cards stand pat

As much as I would like to see the Cards get an instant impact arm, I think Sabathia would empty our farm system.

Jeff Gordon: With the Cards stacking up pitching depth, I don't see Mozeliak trading for a hurler who will command Carpenter-like money or more. They are realistically looking at regaining Wainwright and adding Mulder in the weeks ahead.

Could the Cubs make a move of C.C.? Sure. That organization sees a great chance to win it all. The franchise ownership is in flux, so that could be the only holdup there.

G Money: The Blues should take the best player available. If that is a defensemen so what. Our defense is not that great. Any word on where they are leaning?
Jeff Gordon: It appears the team is leaning toward taking the best of the top defensemen left. Not the route I'd go, but that is where the quality in this draft is.

G Money: Have to give credit to Mulder for making an adjustment with his arm slot. Hope it works out for him. With Wellemeyer and Carpenter both having a bad week with injuries we can use some good news. Will Reyes be given a chance??
Jeff Gordon: Reyes certainly earned another look with his solid work at Memphis and his strong showing Sunday. This team needs to be careful with Boggs, since he is still a work in progress. Also, Wellemeyer's ongoing battle with elbow soreness is a cause for concern. And Wainwright's timetable is very uncertain.

MichaelP07: Hi Jeff,

It seems that for several years the Cards have had a major problem getting value out of their budget. By that I mean players with big salaries who actually go out and play and produce. Carpenter's $60 million for one start has to set a record! My question reqards the medical advice they are getting. It seems very stupid to invest this kind of money in guys who can't play. Do you think they need better doctors? Before they spend this kind of dough they must be conducting a thorough medical evaluation. It's not like the Cards are cheap because they have a lot of money tied up in starting pitching. The problem is none of them are healthy enough to pitch. Maybe they misjudge on one guy, but the entire starting rotation?
Jeff Gordon: In general, investing large, long-term money in pitching is not something the team has done much of. Injuries happen. Investing in pitching is a dicey deal. Preventing pitching injuries is virtually impossible. I believe the franchise handles its hurlers with the appropriate care and the doctors do what they can.

Are the Cards unluckier than most franchises? This year, yes. But look what the Cubs went through with Wood and Prior. Look at the Braves with Smoltz, Hampton and Glavine or the Tigers this year.

Tackleberry: Gordo,

1. Why did starting pitchers struggle so greatly while pitching to their counterparts these past 3-4 games. How many extra bases hits did pitchers get for Philly & Cincy?

2. What was the managing philosophy in Saturday's 7th inning for the Cards? Why did the less-than-speedy Molina HAVE to run on Loshe's bunt? Why in the world is Tony hitting and running with the pitcher on the bases?
Jeff Gordon: Philly and Cincy can hit. That was the primary issue there. The Cards pitching staff is exposed right now, due to all the injuries and kids filling in. Those teams got some swings.

As for that inning, Molina has to take off to have any chance of advancing on a bunt. He is that slow. It takes a great bunt to advance him. The Cards might now have bunted there, but their bench was short. As for the hit-and-run play, that is just trying to make something happen. Obviously neither ploy worked.

Tim: Will the cards make a run at Roberts or Michael Young?
Jeff Gordon: An impact bat in one of the middle infield slots would really strengthen the lineup. Izturis is playing great defense, but his offense is only adequate at best. So far, Tony has gained good production from his second-base-by-committee arrangement, but there isn't much pop there. I'd like to see Ryan get a shot at one of those two spots and the team add a potential all-star at the other spot.

Trouble is, all the pitching injuries could keep the Cards from making a real big move this summer. This may have to wait until the winter, when there could be some interesting FA shortstops.

Tim: How come the cards havnt brought Jess Todd up to AAA yet? theres also some people down there that deserve a chance to play at AAA like Robinson, Jay, Craig, when will we see them up?
Jeff Gordon: Before the Cards move too many players up, the organization must decide which players are coming back to Memphis as the Cards heal. Mather's return was an example of that. And moving guys like Craig and Jay up is tough when there are good prospects already in place at the Class AAA level.

Tim: Do you think the Cards plan to use Boggs as a future starter or set up man?
Jeff Gordon: Flip a coin. The Cards are grooming him to start, but his relief experience could allow him to move into that role and stick in the big leagues sooner. Not everybody is suited to move.

cardsfan9: Jeff, with the Cards seeming like they will be in contention for either the Central or the Wild Card, what moves would you like to see them make? What players intrigue you that might be available via trade to fill the holes? One player I'm particularly interested in is Dan Uggla from the Marlins. He is definitely an impact bat and plays a position that we could use an upgrade at. Thanks for your insight and knowledge of Cardinal baseball throughout the year.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, that is an impact bat. And, no, the Marlins don't seem prepared to lock in any other players after bucking up for Ramirez. Many GMs will focus on Florida as a result. If the Marlins fade, nobody would be shocked to see another sell-off.

dschertzer: Do you think the Rams should offer a Molina a contract to play the O-line this season? That block at home plate in yesterday's game just showss me how tough this guy really is and how much heart he has playing the game.

That being said, have you heard anything about how he's doing? If Yadi is put on the DL, do you see them bringing up Anderson for a go?
Jeff Gordon: When I talked to Memphis manager Chris Maloney last week, he said Anderson is progressing defensively . . . but wasn't quite ready to the big leagues as a defender. Down the road, Anderson would be the fill-in if Yadier missed significant time. He can hit right now, though.

Bryan S.: Do you think the Blues will go for best available or for a forward or goalie for their two second round picks. I believe they can get some steals for some first round talent that just barely slipped past the round. Also, any ideas of who they could target?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues believe those two early second-round picks offer great value. They have to get impact prospects there. And, yes, players at every position will slip. Assuming the team goes with a "D" pick at No. 4, then the Blues would certainly look longer at forwards in the second round.

FWild: Jeff
On the current roster I can only see Pujols and LaRussa as going to the Hall of Fame and then onto the left field wall. Which of these three former Cardinals do you think has the best chance of joining them. Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds or Ted Simmons? With all the talk recently after Mike Piaza's retirement that he is first ballot hall of famer why does Simmons not get a hint of respect from the veterans committee? If Piaza's defense isn't going to be held against him why should Simmons?
Jeff Gordon: It's a great question. Simmons gets a rap for not defending well and for moving away from the position later in his career. But his offense as a catcher ranks up with the all-time greats. Unfortunately, the veterans committee isn't very charitable these days, under the current framework.

Craig: With the positive news about Mulder's last outing is there a chance he can be effective? At this point, any positive contribution from him would be a plus.

Also, I can't understand the run of bad luck this team keeps having with injuries. All I can say is that I'm proud of the way these guys keep rolling on, even when it seems like the wheels are litterally falling off.
Jeff Gordon: I'd say Mulder is a good bet to get it a try at this level after another rehab start or two. He is getting eager to contribute and his early returns with the new motion are encouraging.

Rich: Hey Gordo,

Do you think Klop will ever live up to his draft status?

They took this guy in the second round in 06 and he has all of 2 TDs to his credit.

Not to mention the Rams picked up free agent TEs in back to back off-seasons.

In my mind the question of what kind of TE Klop is can be summed up in his two catches last season.

Is he the guy who caught a short pass for all of one yard?

Or is he the guy who turned a one yard pass into a 36 yard catch and run for a TD?

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have hope for him this year, since Becht arrived to assume a blocking role. Saunders knows how to use a TE in his offense. If McMichael gets nicked up along the way, Klop could play a role. Linehan singled him out for praise during the OTAs.

The Show: Hi Gordo, thanks for the time. I'm excited about some of the defensive moves the Rams have made this offseason. My concern is the solid but aging Chavous and up and down Carter. How are the young safety prospects? Is Chaimberlin a real possibility?
Thanks again
The Show
Jeff Gordon: Linehan told Bernie he is looking to add another DB before camp -- and I'm guessing safety would be his first choice. Carter hasn't progressed much to this point, you're right. The depth there is iffy. As for Chamberlain, the team originally saw him as a linebacker prospect who could move back in a pinch.

Dave S.: Jeff - with the rash of injuries lately do you think it will lead to a trade of some kind? Maybe another bat just for safety sake? Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: It's tough to trade when the team is beat up. Your assets are compromised. So far, they have filled all their needs internally. You never say never, but Mozeliak keeps saying the trade market won't shake out until closer to the deadline.

Jim in S.W. Mo: Gordo
Thanks for your time. I have a question that is a little off of the beaten path. My family and I visited the new ballpark for the first time this weekend. I see the stadium on television and it looks nice but the sites and colors are much more impressive in person. I had some time to kill before the game started Saturday so I decided to go for a walk and familiarize myself with the stadium, for the future trips. I made my way around to the left field area and was alarmed with what I saw through the fence where "Old Busch" used to be. It looked like an old mine pit, which had pumps and hoses sucking out rain water into the storm drains in the street. I was embrassed for people to see this and I live at the oposite end of the state. What is in the works for this area? It is just a little more than a year before the All-Star games comes to "Baseball Heaven" and there is an eye sore next to our new stadium. Are the people of St. Louis as embrassed as I am? Sorry for the book but I need some answers. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Yes, St. Louisans are suitably upset over Lake DeWitt.

jerry Cox: Jeff,

I don't hear anything about Donnie Avery. How did he do in recent workouts? Does he have a chance to help the club next year? Does he play like a 2nd rounder pick?

jerry
Jeff Gordon: He and Burton should both be impact rookies. Both are progressing on schedule.

Superjim: Hi Gordo,

I was never sold on the Trent Green acquisition, the financial side particularly but now I am even less pleased with it. By my maths if we kept Frerotte and paid Isaac it would come out as exactly the same cost as Green's deal for this season. Sure Frerotte looked poor last year but am I really convinced Green is an upgrade? No, I think both guys have serious question marks by their name. Now though, with the Gradkowski signing (a good bit of business I think) it makes Green very expendable. So why sign him?! I understand we couldn't have known Gradkowski would be available, but clearly someone from Tampa was going to be looking for a new home and there were other options, perhaps better options, out there for far less money. I'd be surprised if even Culpepper would have cost us what Green is. Would you agree we overpaid for Green and are now regretting it?
Are there any updates on the contract negotiations for Jackson/Atogwe/Long/Avery?

Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are happy with Green. But I have my doubts, given his concussion history, Getting Bruce Gradkowski was a plus, since he could really offer valuable insurance if he learns the offense.

Tom S.: Have you heard anything about the Rams possibly taking a look at LeCharles Bentley. I wouldn't think it would be a bad thing to bring him in and have a chance to be the starting center. He's a former pro-bowler and probably wouldn't cost too much.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are looking for one more offensive linemen, but there is already significant competition for the interior line job. Romberg and Incognito are both proven at center. I don't know how much the Rams will spend to add even more depth.

HEG: Gordo it is obvious that the Cardinals are in dire needs of a left handed reliever; it is pretty clear that Villone and Flores is not going get the job done; also Duncan looks as though his offensive output continues to decline; do you think it is time to address these problems? I think TLR made 4 or 5 bad judgement calls in one of the games over the week-end but they won the game.
Jeff Gordon: Villone really got abused the other day. This guy pitches and pitches and pitches, which might be one of the issues. The Cards have lots of pitching depth, but not much in that spot. Tyler Johnson's injury really hurt. I see Jaime Garcia as a starter, not a reliever.

And, yes, Duncan needs to pick it up. He chased a curveball off the plate Sunday afternoon with the game on the line and got away with it, since Philly botched the play.

Bobby: Hey Gordo! Thanks for the chats. Two quick questions: 1. I've tried to figure out how Reyes and Izzy were brought back on to the roster, who was moved? So I was a little out of the loop over the weekend. 2. When will we see Rasmus?
Jeff Gordon: Mather was sacrificed off the bench and Worrell exited the bullpen. Rasmus still looks like a September call-up, unless there are more injuries or a big trade.

MP: Please tell me whether or not the Blues are considering Kyle Beach.
Jeff Gordon: It appears the blue-chip defensemen at the top of the draft -- the four to five players all the scouts love -- hold the most interest right now. I'm guessing the Blues wouldn't follow your suggestion unless the team traded back.

tmerseal16: Gordo

Do you see the Blues active in the free agent market for a pp shot to be able to move Boyes down low and put McDonald on a 2nd pp unit?

Thanks

Troy
Jeff Gordon: Campbell is a great PP defensemen, but the Stars appear to covet him. I don't see the Blues investing still more money in a veteran D as long as they have the current veterans in place. Overall, I don't see the Blues making a huge splash in free agency.

donald s box: Hey Gordo will the cardinals bring up one of their other catchers, and not bother Anderson. Bring him up for a short time is not good for him.Duncan is still in a funk why do Tony keep giving this guy chance after chance.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, Duncan is still struggling at the plate. He did not straighten himself out in Memphis. But with the team winning, he will get his chance to hit his way out of it.

Adam: I have a couple question:
With interleague play coming tomorrow, who are the cardinals going to have be DH or Playing first(if Duncan DHs)?

What do you see the cardinals doing with Barton, it is obvious that Barton needs some seasoning, we may need the roster spot since we are contending this year?

Thanks for your time.
Jeff Gordon: Barton is a handy OF because he has done OK playing part-time. Right now, he fits the chemistry of what is going on. Had Mather stayed hot, though, it might have become more difficult for him to last the year as a Rule 5 pick-up. When the Cards go to the AL, Duncan could DH, Glaus could play first and Miles could get some ABs at third base.

Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff, Thank You for taking my question. After reading last weeks articles about the Blues and the draft. J.D. pretty much said that they are taking a defensemen. That being said, do we really need one? Is it worth a great pick to have another defensemen waiting for a chance to play or get a forward that could jump out this year and make a difference? Also, J.D. said that the Blues are still rebuilding. Does that mean that the log jam of defensemen will get a chance to be called up and play this year? When will Cole, Junland, Polak and Fast get a chance to play? Thank You for your time.
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Polak needs to be on the team this season. He is ready. The others are longer-term prospects. The D at the top of this draft are universally loved by scouts, so the Blues figure to take the sure pick and deal from their strength (if it emerges) down the road. Obviously, the D wasn't good enough last year, so it wasn't a strength.

Scott Rhein: I read last week that the Blues might be interested in Ray Emery this summer if his is available. Do you think this would be good for the Blues? I think he would cost too much and cause problems. What do you think about Johan Hedberg or Johan Holmqvist as a back up? Also, what are your thoughts on Jordan Sigalet maybe comming in the shore up all the young goalies we have lost since last year? Do you think the Blues will pick a goalie in the draft this year? Thank You for your time.
Scott
Jeff Gordon: Sigalet was a great story in the "A," but the Blues need somebody to back up Legaace this year while Ben Bishop readies himself at Peoria. I look for a move on a veteran. Emery is a wild card, fort he reasons you noted. Hedberg could be a nice option, too. There are no shortage of possibilities, include some trade scenarios.

ueaces: Hi Gordo,
Always love the work you do. Thanks for doing these chats.
Kyle Lohse, once again, came up big Saturday with a great eight inning effort that was sorely needed after the bullpen got rocked the night before. It would seem that he and the cardinals are a marriage waiting to happen. He, Duncan, and Tony all seem to be on the same page which leads one to believe that a future contract offer would be forth coming. So much would depend upon his own desire to overide the infamous Scott Boras and not test the free agent waters. What are the chances, in your opinion, of Kyle signing before the season ends?
Jeff Gordon: Boras will want to get Lohse his money, since he had to work on the cheap this year. To lock in Lohse, the team would have to put big money up on the board. Mozeliak may try to do just that once he gets a better read on Carpenter, Mulder and Clement. (The latter two have team options for next year.)

stl1sportsfan: ok Jeff who do you think the Blues should pick in the draft and who do you think they are leaning towards picking?

Also do you think Ryan Johnson will be resigned?

One more thing do you think it is more or less likely that both TJ Oshie and Berglund will both make the Blues out of training camp?
Jeff Gordon: Oshie, Berglund and Perron could all shuttle between here and Peoria, depending on how they fare. We all know Murray won't take a shortcut with a young player. He doesn't want them to develop bad habits or get into some of the drama David did last year. All three figure to have an impact here, at some point.

Johnson's speed makes him attractive at the right price. PKs with speed are valuable. There are other places to cut. As for the draft, again, it appears the team will take the best "D" standing unless something unusual happens.

Ryan: Which catcher will be called up in Molina's absence - Bryan Anderson or Mark Johnson?
Jeff Gordon: I'm assuming Johnson, IF Molina is looking at a shorter-team absence. Anderson has a nice bat, but he is learning to play the D needed up here. But Anderson CAN hit right now.

fyyff1: HI JEFF. ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE HAMMERING ON THE AVERY PICK. BUT I BELEVE THAT SAUNDERS SEES SOMETHING IN HIM AND FEELS HE CAN GET THE SAME SORT OF RESULTS OUT OF HIM AS A SIMILER TYPE PLAYER IN NEW ENGLAND. DOES THE NAME WES WELKER RING A BELL? I FEEL HE WILL NOT USE AVERY JUST FOR THE HOME RUN PASS BUT WILL UTILIZE HIS SPEED ACROSS THE MIDDLE FOR THE CATCH AND RUN PLAYS LIKE WELKER IN NEW ENGLAND. WHAT IS YOUR FEELING ON THIS?
Jeff Gordon: I agree, but not enough to use all caps.

Cards Fan: Do you see Ludwick as a Rowand type hitter going forward? What do you think his best case scenario is? Most likely?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, that's doable. Ryan has a bit more power and maybe not as much speed. Ludwick's strong play validates the team's decision not to chase Rowand, BTW.

Adam: Saw that David Backes is an unrestricted Free agent. Is there a deadline for signing him? When do you think it will happen and at what numbers?
Thanks

ADAM
Jeff Gordon: He is restricted, which means he will get a qualifying offer while the team explores a long-term deal. It's possible that another team could throw sill money at him because of his sturdy play. This could be a big year for RFA poaching league-wide

fyyff1: THE WELKER POST WAS FROM JEFF IN VERMONT THANKS
Jeff Gordon: You're welcome!

Blues Fan: Gordo,

With interest in the Blues increasing all the time in Stl, I was wondering if you could take us on a stroll down memory lane and give us your 4 best lines, top to bottom, and three best defensive pairings of all time for the Blues....

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: That would take a day's worth of research, since players have come and gone for this franchise. Hull and Oates was the best combo I've ever seen, obviously. Federko and just about anybody was a good combo; Hunter has a big shot and Sutter converted around the net. Tkachuk and Demitra really clicked. An overlooked line was Janney/Shanahan and Emerson -- a pure playmaker with a power forward and a speed guy.

Interesting, Weight never found great chemistry during his stints here.

Steve: Jeff,

With AP's troubles with his legs, why not have a stationary bike, or two, in the dugout so the guys can keep loose between innings?
Jeff Gordon: That concept works well in other sports, but a bike in the dugout? Hmmmm . . .

BG: So Jeff,

Since the Cards are playing like contenders (and suffering these injuries) will the front office respond like contenders for the first time since the Larry Walker trade?
Jeff Gordon: The front office has been smart already. The Lohse pickup was huge. Trouble is, making a deal while so many players are hurt -- and facing undefined recovery time, in some cases -- making a deal is tough. Teams would love to pluck a Mather, a Todd or a Garcia from the Cards in exchange for short-term help. I just don't "Mo" falling for that. If he stays the course, he could have a powerhouse next year once some of the team's health is restored and more kids arrive.

T. Fechtman: Gordo,
Why would anyone accept Majerus as a viable hire for SLU's coach?

SLU has academic standards for their athletes, which means students actually have to go to class. This is a new way of thinking for Majerus.
Not to mention the cheating at Utah only to leave after violations were found. Another very good coach caught cheating. I believe him to be an elite cheater, which means he cheats gets caught but everyone still wants him to coach at their institution because he is successful at winning.

How do you expect him to get good recruits that will go to class and compete for a conference championship without getting caught cheating?
This will really test him and his cheating, hopefully he has learned to be better at cheating without getting caught.

So even SLU has hired a successful cheater, it's depressing especially on a Monday to realize all these coaches that are cheaters are still being recycled and getting $1 million dollar coaching jobs.

Kelvin Sampson is in the NBA now as an assistant coach with the Bucks, he finally made it to the big time with the premiere cheaters!
Jeff Gordon: Rick's violations weren't anything out of the ordinary. Finding a coach without that sort of minor baggage is tough. A larger issue for Rick is his player turnover. But SLU needs to compete to fill the new arena, so the days of keeping ineffective players on scholarship ended abruptly. Players will have to fight for their jobs and their scholarships on a year-to-year basis. This is a tough approach, but necessary if the Billikens want to win.

Tim: Gordo,

Do you know if the Blues have any interest in Bringing in a guy like Staal, Toews, or McRae with our second round picks and maybe a third for one or two of the guys?
How great would it be for the Blues vs Hawks rivalry to have a Toews vs Toews battle also here in a few years! That could speed up the heat between the two clubs! Kind of saw it get a little hotter this past season!

Also any news on wheather the Blues really want Emery and if they do please tell me they will wait till he gets bought out before getting him! I would hate to see us trade for him!

Thanks,

Tim A
Jeff Gordon: I would be shocked if the Blues gambled much of their own money on a guy like Emery. Ottawa has to turn the page first, right? Right? If the Penguins go ahead and extend Malkin -- thus putting trade rumors to rest -- then targeting Staal would be a great idea. Pittsburgh can't keep them all, even with Hossa departing (Montreal?) as a UFA. I just don't know if J.D. is willing to pass on the opportunity to draft three more top prospects.

bob in indiana: Gordo, The Molina crash. I never saw a tag on that play, and I'm a big cards fan.
Whats considered a tag? Is 1 person crashing into another considered a crash?
Jeff Gordon: Molina caught the ball turning right into the contact. As long as the glove made contact with the runner -- and the ball stayed in the glove -- the runner is out.

Tackleberry: The left-side of the bullpen seems weak. Flores does rank 7th in the NL with holds, but his ERA has been ballooning since mid-May. He seems like the guy that the front office gives the annual "why not" contract to. If you look at his last 3 seasons they haven't been that impressive to warrant the re-signing every year. He's not awful, but there has to be better out there because he inspires zero confidence. Villone is what he is, and while his ERA took a monster hit Friday in a sacraficial outing, he was also trending up to the low 4's in ERA prior to Friday. Is this an area of concern for Tony & the front office?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, it is. As we mentioned earlier, Tyler Johnson's demise left the team vulnerable. If you could point to one need to be met on the marketplace, a lefty reliever would be near the top. Tony loves to play the match-up game and these guys are getting heavy use. If the rotation settled and the team had another inning eater in middle relief (Thompson, Reyes), perhaps TLR could scale back Villone's workload a bit.

Justin: With the Blues not expecting to make a big splash in free agency and continuing to make a push to develop young talent, is there any chance they will pursue Blake Wheeler from the University of Minnesota? After failing to sign with the Coyotes, he is now an unrestricted free agent. Rumors are he would like to stay in the midwest and could fill a need for the blues by adding a power forward with good hands and speed at lower cost than veteran talent on the market. The Blues would also allow him the opportunity to play with fellow Gopher alumni Erik Johnson!

Justin
Minneapolis, MN
Jeff Gordon: There has been speculation that he is looking East, perhaps to Buffalo or Toronto. Lord knows, the Maple Leafs desperately need young talent. Outbidding Toronto under the circumstances could be tough.

Chris: Gordo:

Couple of questions:

How comfortable are you with what the Rams currently have at FB and LB positions? Do you see them going forward with their current roster or are there any likely June cuts or FA options on the horizon?

Is Bruce Gradkowski a viable long-term answer for the Rams at QB or is he just insurance for this season in case Bulger/Green go down?
Jeff Gordon: Bruce has some upside, but it remains to be seen how comfortable he will be in this offense. Is he more suited for the West Coast? We'll see. He will make camp more interesting, for sure.

Linehan definitely is looking for a pure run-blocking FB, freeing Leonard to be a passing down specialist. He seems happy at linebacker, believing that Culberson will push Draft for a starting spot. But let's see how all the young candidates do. Veteran back-up LBs pop loose as the summer winds down.

ricostl: Gordo, reports out of Edmonton suggest the Oilers are offering talented centerman Rob Shremp for a 2nd round draft pick. Would this offer be something the Blues should pursue since they are in desperate need at the center position?
Jeff Gordon: Interesting situation at center. Rob was a fast-tracker until his knee injury. The Blues could also use one of their high second-rounders to address this need some how. Berglund will compete for center work this camp, but Oshie might be better on the wing. Eller figures to be a few years ahead. McClement failed to progress and Tkachuk is near the end. Center is still a need.

Aron: Who has been the most impressive rookie so far besides Long?
Jeff Gordon: The insiders rave about Burton's ability to go get a football

slapperloon: As you know, some fairly significant trades often take place during the NHL entry draft. What do you think the likelihood is of the Blues making a move to add another goal scorer on the draft floor. It looks like the NY Rangers are souring on the talented, but somewhat soft Petr Prucha - a 30 goal scorer in his rookie season. Any chance the Blues could make a move for him or someone of his calibre?
Jeff Gordon: Normally Prucha would hold some interest for the Blues, he needs to play off a great passer -- and this team is still looking for help there. A bigger need is to get Stempniak, Kariya and Perron going.

Curt: Dear Jeff,

IF, and I stress IF, Orlando Pace comes back as his old self and ends up back in Hawaii, what could the Rams get for him in a trade next February (draft pick)?

If Torry Holt shows no lingering knee issues and posts 90 receptions and 1,200 yards, what could the Rams get for him?

Both will be mid-30's, and costing the org $14 million in 2009, no?
Jeff Gordon: At his advanced age? A lot less than you think, unfortunately.

JakeD: Gordo,
Can't beat a Monday afternoon at work with Gordo Live and then an 18 hole play off to follow for the U.S. Open.

So one quick question: Why not Bryan Anderson now? I mean come on, this team has benefited from major contributions from rookies all year and there is actually talk of bringing up veteran Mark Johnson instead. Why not Bryan Anderson?!?!
Jeff Gordon: If Molina had to miss 6-8 weeks, Anderson would make great sense because of his bat. But he has work to do with his defense. His arm is OK, but Matheny had to coach him up on pitch blocking.

Lucas: Jeff,

Silly question...What is the name of Rick Ankiel's walk-up song?
Jeff Gordon: You stumped me -- we'll open it up to the floor . . .

Tim G: Hey Gordo, any chance of phasing out Flores? Seeems teams are learning that he throws very few strikes, and if they stand there with the bat on their shoulder they will draw a walk.
Jeff Gordon: He hasn't been as sharp lately, but his approach is terrific. I just worry about overuse. It's a shame Johnson got hurt. It would be better to have three lefties.

jeff pan: Hello Mr. Gordon:

Personally speaking, more than ever, NOW is the time for our genius GM to make some trades/moves than waiting until the trade deadline, simply because:

1) The team has so many key injuries right now, we may lose some ground in the next few weeks without some additional enforcements from offense and pitching side (when we play Detroit, Boston and Cubs). A trade for Brian Roberts or Michael Young and a callup for Garcia/ Rasmus at this moment would certainly BOOST the confidence of the team with the tough stretch coming for the next few weeks while we are waiting for AP, AW, TW and YM to heal. If we are going to make a trade/move sooner or later, why not make them now. Some enforcements in offense and pitching at this VERY moment will help us ride through the upcoming tough stretch and may even gain some ground.

b) I'd like to see the Cards get the NL's best record in regular season than just being satisfied with winning the wild card, as the home court advantage in the playoffs would be huge for the Cards (as Cubs and Phillies are tough to beat at their home). We do have a chance to get the best record since we have won both series against the top NL two teams this year, so there is a chance we can win the division and have the best records in the NL this year with some ADDITIONAL offensive and pitching help ASAP during the next few weeks' tough stretch. If we are going to dream, why don't we dream it bigger!!! As we saw in 2006, we may surprise a lot of people by winning another WS again this year (the AL teams are not that strong this year)!

Jeff Pan
Jeff Gordon: I see where you are coming from, but it's dangerous to deal while you're shorthanded. It just is. You want to deal from strength, while you really understand your assets.

As for Garcia and Rasmus, it's early.

Barry: Hey Gordo,

Thanks for all you do. I have not heard much about the Rams third key to success -- special teams. Any comments?
Jeff Gordon: Well, they have great kickers. That's a start. Their return game is up in the air. Is Hall still viable? Don't know. Stanley? Don't know. As for the coverage teams, well, let's see what happens with some of these draft picks.

Joe: Jeff,

With some Rams fans (including myself) somewhat surprised that the Rams didn't address their LB depth earlier in this past draft can you tell me what your opinions are of Quinton Culberson (undrafted LB from last year's draft and had an outstanding game in his only start at LB in the Rams final game), Chris Chamberlain, Marc Magro and Vince Hall (really like the physical type game he plays!)? Personally, I think Culberson will be a very good player for the Rams and I also think Vince Hall might end up being their best rookie LB (even though he wasn't even drafted). Have any of these players shown you anything so far this offseason and which players do you think will make the final Rams roster?

Thanks for your time!
Jeff Gordon: The coaches love Culberson, who had a great camp last year and then stood out when he finally got his chance. McGarigle stepped up last year, so perhaps one of the kids will do the same. We get a lot of Hall shout-outs, given his college productivity, but we'll see.

Bill: Hey Jeff, in regards to the rumor that the Blues are leaning towards picking Luke Schenn with their first pick, is that because they like him best of all the top defenseman in the draft, or do they feel Drew Doughty or Zach Bogosian won't be available when they pick? Unless Schenn is a bonafide can't miss Scott Stevens clone, I would much rather have the offensive defenseman like Doughty. Your take on this?
Jeff Gordon: I agree. And one of those offensive D might still be there, based on what insiders are saying. A stay-at-home D doesn't interest me, but the kid apparently IS a load.

Scott L: Terry Glenn and the Cowbooys appear to be having issues regarding contract and health, would he fit as a spped reciever flnaking Holt or is that spot taken definitaively by Bennet
Jeff Gordon: To me, he is an injury waiting to happen. I'd rather see Avery and Burton get their shot.

Jesse: Do you see the Blues adding another defenseman to the mix this offseason via free agency? If so do you think it will be a puck mover like a Ron Hainsey or a stay at home type like Brooks Orpik?
Jeff Gordon: With Wagner (a puck mover) and Polak ready to move up -- and a full set of D under contract -- I don't see additional investment there, at least not for a veteran.

stl4life85: Hey Gordo do you think the Cards would be a high bidder for Cuban defector Dayan Viciedo if he becomes a free agent.
Jeff Gordon: I'd run that one past Joe Strauss . . .

Bill: Hey Jeff, what's your take on Barrett Jackman being being retained, at a costly contract no less? Don't you feel he was someone that could of been replaced from one of our defenseman within the organization? There's no doubt the Blues defense was overrated 2 years ago. Backman is gone, Brewer is still an enigma, Mckee doesn't log a lot of minutes. To me Jackman is overrated and I would of liked the Blues to move on in another direction, and saving the money wouldn't of hurt either.
Jeff Gordon: Many fans protested Jackman's retention at the expense of Bryce Salvador. Also, Polak could be that type of player. Also, McKee is still under contract, and that is a LOT to invest in offensive limited D.

Bill: Hey Jeff, what's your explanation/analysis on how the Red Wings suffocated the Penguins offense? I got to watch 3 of the games and I'm mystified at how they just stoned them. Was it great positional play / coaching strategy? It's like everytime a Penguin tried to do something a Red Wing was right there in there tracks. There's no question that Detroit deserved to be champs.
Jeff Gordon: It's tactics, determination AND, the big AND, team speed. Fast up front, mobile in back.

Tim: If Yadi is sidelined for an extended period of time, do you see Bryan Anderson making an appearance for the big league club? He is hitting .320 at Memphis after all. Also, do you think I could get a bulk mail rate if I sent a get well card to all the ailing Cardinals?
Jeff Gordon: Good line about the bulk mail. We'll see Anderson -- I just don't know if now is the time. We'll see. But his bat will get him to the bigs.

Chris: Gordo,

I really enjoy these live chats and you're doing a great job on KFNS, keep up the good work!

A couple of quick Blues questions:

1. It seems Oshie will make the squad barring a horrible camp, is Bergland in the same boat? I read he put on like 15 pounds and arrived in STL two weeks early on his own dime. He is showing commitment to this team and as I recall had a great camp last year. Will he be our #2 center this year?

2. Last year Perron had a great camp and made the team out of nowhere. Is there anybody this year that can muscle their way onto the team with a great camp? Any sleepers we should watch for?

Thanks bro, keep up the good work
Jeff Gordon: Eller could stand out -- but the team could still send him back to Sweden to play against men. The Blues didn't want Perron to waste a year in junior hockey. A guy I've want to see before Russia calls him home is Nikolai Lemtyugov, who finished well at Peoria.

Berglund may need time to adapt to the North American game, but he will play here in the STL. He did fine against older players in Sweden.

Tim: Who is a better hitter Anderson or Rasmus? Do you see Anderson trying out many other positions?
Jeff Gordon: Long-term, Rasmus is the better hitting prospect. But Anderson has progressed well enough behind the plate to stay there. Good-hitting catchers are hard to find.

phil: When do you think Izzy will be back in the 9th?
Jeff Gordon: Great question. TLR will want to get Izzy reestablished with a few easy assignment, I believe. The day off should help Franklin regroup as the interim closer. If Izzy has a couple of crisp outings and gets his feel back, then, sure, try him again.

The good news: Perez is ready to take over as needed. So from that standpoint, there is no extra pressure on Izzy.

Michael Kent: Jeff ...

During one of your live chats about three or four weeks ago, I raised the question to you about whether it was possible that Izzy was tipping his pitches. You replied that tipping was something Dave Duncan is usually good at catching and seemed to suggest that nothing was mentioned about it. However, while Izzy was rehabbing in Florida, news accounts were saying that Chris Carpenter and Josh Kinney both noticed tipping in the delivery.

So my question is ... how could Duncan have not noticed it while Izzy was in the middle of his struggles?

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Great question -- Duncan is usually all over pitch tipping. They look at tape all the time. I don't know if it became more pronounced in the minors, but that was a good catch by the pitchers watching. Josh Kinney earns his keep!

Brian L.: What ever happened to Bud Smith after he was traded to the Phillies in '02? Is he out of baseball?
Jeff Gordon: The last two years he pitched independent league baseball in California, and not very well. He could never get past shoulder woes. He never made it up with Philly.

Jallarie: The Blues are rumored to be interested in Blackhawks forward Jason Williams. If he is signed, what do you think is value dollar wise would be? And if healthy do you think he could be a key contributor to this club going forward with the youth movement?
Jeff Gordon: A few months ago, there was some speculation of interest. Lately, we haven't heard much. He would be a solid get . . . at the rest price. I'm more interested in getting Stempniak back to his old self.

Brian L.: FYI -

The name of Rick Ankiel's walk-up song is 'Wherever I May Roam' off of the 'Black' album by Metallica.
Jeff Gordon: Thanks for helping with that. Don't have that in my Ipod.

Jallarie: You don't seem to think or want the Blues to make any moves via free agency this summer. If there was one move you could do to imrpove this team by signing somebody, what would it be?
Jeff Gordon: Well, they could Marian Hossa and get a lot better. They could use a scorer, big time. Also, the Emery talk is interesting. He has untapped upside, but he has to settle down. He and Legace could be a nice pairing.

That appears to be it for now. See you next week!
