| Dunder: Past, Present, Future: I'm not a TLR hater and I know he has a past of mixing and matching, but given the present make up of this team would they really be any worse off in the present if they trotted out a Pujols, Ryan, T. Greene, DeRosa infield with Schumaker, Rasmus and DuncWickiel for the outfield each day? It would be a little more small-ball than Tony is used to, but might be more production and would certainly give a better glimpse into answers for the future. |
Jeff Gordon: I'm a big Tyler Greene fans, but he is still adapting to big league pitching. And this team needs more muscle to reach the postseason. So I'd like to see a lot of DeRosa at third base, as you note, but the four heavier hitters fighting it out for three OF spots.
And if Duncan, Ankiel and Ludwick continue at their current pace, I'd like to see the Cards add another outfielder with some pop while leaving Skip at second for now.
Now, if Wallace keeps hitting, how about putting him at third with his power next year. Re-sign DeRosa and put him at second with HIS power and move Skip back to the outfield with Rasmus and Ludwick. |
|
Thomas: Gordo,
Do you see the Cards making another move after the DeRosa trade? A pitcher?? Matt Holiday?? What are your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Cards are open to either move, but it would come in a few weeks after Lohse returns (or doesn't) to the rotation and DeRosa settles in. Maybe DeRosa will take some heat of Ludwick and Ankiel, allowing both to relax and hit like they did last season. |
|
williemcgee51: Gordo,
I love the DeRosa move and it is nice to see the team trying to win now. That being said, there are other areas of need that have to be addressed before July 31. A veteran bat for the bench, a veteran arm for the pen (Springer would look nice out there), or possibly another arm for the rotation (assuming Wellemeyer and the AAA guys don't grab the bull by the horns) are areas of need that I see...how would you rank these in order of priority, and how likely do you think the FO is to make another move? |
Jeff Gordon: Right now the rotation is the top priority. Even with Lohse returning, there are issues. That may need to be addressed by trade.
If Josh Kinney can't get the job done in the pen, then Jess Todd from Memphis might be the answer. This kid could be in Cleveland next year as part of the DeRosa deal, but for now he can help this group. If the A's want to move Springer for a reasonable return, the Cards would like that, too.
A righthanded pinch hitter would be nice, but Stavinoha deserves at shot at returning to that gig. He is hitting well in Memphis. |
|
| ken: Jeff: It plain to see that LaRussa is trying to try Thurston into the next Aaron Mills. That said, how much more will LaRussa put up with Thurston’s inability to run the bases correctly? Another BIG blunder yesterday and No you can’t lay the blame on Oquendo. |
| Jeff Gordon: Those baserunning mistakes could very well end his big league career. It happens again and again. |
|
| steinjr11: Do you think that the Cards will go and get Holliday and if so will they try to get something in the deal saying that he will sign a new, longer contract before the trade is done, so we are not giving up all those players for a possible rental player? |
Jeff Gordon: Boras is the agent and Matt is one of his stars in the next free agent class, so that will be very difficult to pull off. Since Matt is just a rental, right now, Oakland ought to be happen to get, say, Ryan Ludwick and a mid-level prospect for him. Ludwick is a ways removed from free agency and he can help that team.
As you know, though, I'm not a big Holliday fan. His power outage in Oakland is shocking. |
|
| Rick: Finally the Cardinals made a good trade, and now its time to do it again. Except I think its for a second basemen with defense and offense, not a pitcher like most would say. What do you think? |
Jeff Gordon: DeRosa could be the second baseman for the next few years, so, no, that is unlikely. Skip is a nice offensive second baseman in the mean time and either T. Greene or Ryan can play there, too.
Starting pitching is a bigger issue. |
|
Bob_Inmo: Gordo,
Please tell me the Cardinals are still interested in Holliday even with the DeRosa deal completed. DeRosa was a good move, but I don't think he takes care of everything we need to contend down the stretch. It was mentioned earlier the Cards would likely need to offer Ludwick, Motte/Perez/McClellan, plus a prospect to the A's (similar to the Haren, Calero, Barton deal for Mulder). I thought at the time it was a bad deal because Mulder seemed to be on the decline and he could only pitch once every 5 days, but Holliday would give us the true cleanup hitter we need.
With Perez dealt, the other pieces seem to still be in play. I would think McClellan would need to be the pitcher included since Motte will likely be the new closer of the future.
Also, is there anyone interested in Rick Ankiel? With a Boras represented client in his final year, I'm sure the asking price will be high. I'd love to keep him if we don't have to overpay, but if we can't I would be in favor of getting someone for him now.
Thanks,
Bob in O'Fallon, MO |
Jeff Gordon: Holliday isn't a true cleanup hitter. Look at his numbers in Oakland. He is a very nice ballplayer. He will hit a good average, he can run a bit and he still has gap power. But when a guy goes for weeks without driving in a run in the American League, that is shocking.
Again, I wouldn't offer much more than Ludwick. Having spent Perez, I wouldn't dare deal McClellan or Motte. |
|
Heidi: Mr. Gordon,
I am pleasantly surprised at how well the Cardinal's starting rotation has performed to date, especially Pineiro and Lohse (when not dealing with his health). However, Wainwright seems to be off this year, specifically with his high pitch counts. This seems to be a Matt Morrisesque pattern, which could become a point for concern. Is there cause for concern? If so, is his finger an issue or is his focus/concentration the problem? Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: He IS going down the Matt Morris road, but, like Matt, Adam has the ability to tough out victories when he isn't as sharp. Almost every starting pitcher goes through long stretches like this, with lost velocity and lesser stuff or command. |
|
| HEG: Gordo just a few quick comments concerning the Cards; Re; the Derosa trade it cannot hurt- could they please get someone who could hit the off-speed breaking pitch!! the cardinals starters are seemingly pitching just well enough to lose; in that if they score 3 runs the pitcher gives up more than 3- I would like to know what the stats on cardinal giving up rbi's with 2 outs & in most instances with 2 strikes- the % must be astounding! in my opinion the cards need to put Derosa at 3rd & Ryan at short & wish them luck with the 4 outfielders- they need to forget about the 2 Greene's; I believe the organization did not the whole story with Khalil when they acquired him; bless his heart but he is not going to help the team; does any of these comments make any sense? |
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, it's tough watching these guys try to hit off-speed pitches. It's one thing for Rasmus or T. Greene to struggle some, because they are kids. Ankiel is another matter.
This team can't invest too many more 0-fors in K. Greene. I like his "D" at third base, but he needs to hit to keep his spot in this group. |
|
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
Now that the DeRosa deal is done, whom can we speculate as possible candidates for the "player to be named later" part of the deal that included Chris Perez? It seems to me now that Jason Motte would be off limits, at least for this deal, wouldn't you think? Also, I would think that Mitchell Boggs would be off limits, again, at least for this deal. If Motte or Boggs is part of any trade, it seems they would be used in a separate deal.
Also, it seems like Todd Wellemeyer and Joel Piniero are seeing their last year in St. Louis, but for different reasons. Wellemeyer for his poor performance, Piniero because it's his walk year. Unless he gets traded, Boggs would seem like a leading candidate for te replace one of these guys next year rotation since Carpenter, Wainwright, and Lohse are all locked in deals and Mozeliak will want those final two starters for real cheap. Maybe Jaime Garcia recovers and gives the Cards the lefty starter they desperately need?
Your thoughts? Thanks. |
Jeff Gordon: Boggs is getting these days in Memphis, so he is not off limits. I would presume Motte IS off-limits, since he and Perez would either/or in trade talks. Hard-throwing relievers like Todd, Samuel and Sanchez might be on the list.
Garcia would be a huge addition if he makes his comeback. We never saw him healthy last year. |
|
| CARDGUY: Would signing Derosa to a 3 yr. $20 million deal free up the organization to develop a young 3b and SS (maybe even pete Kozma) while still having some pop from an infield bat...Greene, Ryan, and Freese plus a 6.5 million per for Derosa would only add up to 8 million or less. Currently the cards have 19 million invested in Glaus and Khalil Greene alosne. Derosa could be trhe linch pin for a long term deal for albert and a clean-up hitter. |
| Jeff Gordon: It's not fair to stick DeRosa in the cleanup for the long term, but re-upping him makes all the sense in the world. The Cards will have Kennedy's money to spend next year, too. I'd expect Mozeliak to make this happen. |
|
| BOSS: Gordo, when I watch lil Duncan I just can't help but think his swing has changed since his surgeries. His stroke seems more reserved, like he's holding back. Is he afraid to let it loose due to his disc replacement?? |
| Jeff Gordon: He is still recovering from that surgery, clearly. And he has lost some strength. It's a shame, but you wonder if he will ever be the same hitter. |
|
chris freeman: Hey Gordo
I wanted to know what you think of the Derosa trade of what he will do for them in the short term and also what you see with him in the long term since they have Brett Wallace ready to play 3rd base next year? Do you think this move alone makes them a title contender or do they need to make anymore moves and what those would be?
Thanks
Chris |
| Jeff Gordon: The Cards need more offense and more starting pitching to really contend. Whether that comes from the current group + the farm system remains to be seen. I'm guessing they will need to add one more veteran starting pitcher, which is why I liked the Pedro Martinez idea. |
|
Tackleberry: Gordo,
Now that the DeRosa deal is done, do you think that is it? What if Ludwick & Ankiel continue their futility through July? DeRosa solves a lot of problems but he still can't make Ludwick & Ankiel hit, and right now this team's offense is relying VERY heavily on one of these two getting it together. |
Jeff Gordon: You are 100 percent correct. Perhaps DeRosa will ease the pressure on those guys by assuming the clean-up role. That seemed to help them Sunday.
If Ankiel and Ludwick start hitting, that also takes Duncan out of the outfield -- and that saves the team additional runs defensively. So those two (or their replacements) will be huge indicators for the second half. |
|
Jake Paige: Gordo:
Always great to have the opportunity to get your take on things. I think the DeRosa trade may have been a good one, but a replacement of our continuning question of third base, he may not be the answer since he is rated as a below average third baseman. I know that the Devil Rays are only 5 games out currently, but do you think Evan Longoria might be available at some point? Secondly, didn't Nate McLouth use to be with the Pirates? How did he wind up with the Braves, and how did we miss out on that opportunity? |
Jeff Gordon: McLouth went to the Braves in a deal. DeRosa filled a more critical need for this team, so, no, the Cards didn't miss out by waiting. McLouth was a Cards killer, but his offensive resume isn't THAT much different than the players the Cards have now.
I would imagine Evan would be the absolute last player that Tampa trades. He is their Albert.
DeRosa could be a 2B/LF here long term, with Freese or Wallace playing 3B. Brett is really raking at Mamphis now and he is working hard on his defense. |
|
| KidTwist: What does the DeRosa addition mean for Khalil Greene? DeRosa's arrival came eerily close to a relapse in Greene's condition. |
| Jeff Gordon: No coincidence there. The Cards will be patient with Khalil because the team likes him and is paying him. But how many at bats he gets from here on out will depend on how well he hits. Nobody will be allowed to stack up 0 for 4s now, since the competition for ABs just got hotter. |
|
redbirdswin: First off, I fully support the DeRosa trade. Applause to Mo.
Question - Why all the talk of still acquiring Holliday? At the price Oakland is rumored to be asking (Wallace + more), who in their right mind would make this deal? At this point in the season, Holliday is producing to the equivalent of Ludwick (only Holliday's AVG and OBP are honestly better). Not to mention the salary differential - Holliday's $13.5 mil to Ludwick's $3.7 mil. Wallace has hit at every level, and looks poised to take over at 3B in 2011 at the latest. Unless the asking price drops before the deadline, is there even a chance Mo would look at doing this type of deal? |
Jeff Gordon: Wallace may become a trade chip over the long haul, unless he becomes a pleasant defensive surprise at 3B or in LF. Mozeliak should hang onto him into next season, since his stock will only rise. By then, the team should know whether extending Albert's contract is possible. If Albert commits to becoming a free agent in 2011, then Wallace would have even more long-term value here.
Not that you would ever compare his potential to Albert's output, which is otherworldly stuff. |
|
Tackleberry: Gordo,
What would you guess is the time table on Wellemeyer and is Backe worth a look? |
| Jeff Gordon: There are some interesting pitching options out there, from veterans like Garland to some younger guys looking to move into rotations. For instance, had Khalil Greene pulled himself together and hit, perhaps Boston would have tried him as a rental and sent a spare starting pitcher this way. |
|
| B-dub: Thanks for the time Jeff. With the addition of Mark DeRose is it time for Joe Thurston to go? Baserunning mistake after baserunning mistake, a .209 May average and .211 June average. Seems like his value is no more to this team. Thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: Love the guy, but he isn't getting it done. Those baserunning errors were the last straw. |
|
| redbirdswin: If Thompson throws a quality start tonight vs. San Fran - will it cement his spot as the 5th starter once Lohse returns? It seems as though Wellemeyer has almost certainly tossed himself out of the mix, and his recent quotes regarding "bad luck" don't seem to sit well with TLR. |
Jeff Gordon: Todd is pitching himself toward long relief. He seemed to be aiming the ball. I like the fact he was trying to pound the ball low, but his lack of command was painful. Since he lacks the velocity to dust hitters, they are really working him. They lay off the bad stuff, foul off strikes and either draw walks to crush something fat.
I wouldn't start him again. Give a kid like Mortensen a try. |
|
Jeremy Ping: Hey Gordo,
DeRosa makes a good number two hitter, but what are the odds of the Redbirds now getting a legit cleanup hitter?
Thanks |
Jeff Gordon: I don't see Holliday as a legit clean-up hitter. After that, I don't see many of them available. Fact is, most NL teams are looking for a bigger stick for the middle of the order. They area in short supply.
Don't hold your breath. The Cards may add another hitter, but I doubt it will be a Carlos Lee-type. |
|
| Brett: Do you think DeRosa makes sense to resign? He could play 3B next season until Wallace is ready, and if/when then happens he can move to 2B, LF, and just be a utility guy like Spezio was. Making this impact move helps a ton, and Mark should be a great fit here in St. Louis. |
| Jeff Gordon: Extending him is a no-brainer. He is the perfect La Russa guy. Even if his offense fades, he will offer value with his versatility and leadership. |
|
zuke: Derosa trade is exactly what this team needs. Traded for a need from surplus. Do you see Derosa moving all over the field, or will he be the primary 3rd baseman.
However, what is the odds the cards get holiday. I am not big on the cards surendering the farm for a struggling, rental player. |
| Jeff Gordon: Where DeRosa plays depends on how everybody else hits. If Khalil hits, DeRosa will play in the outfield. If Khalil flails, then Mark fills in there for the rest of the season -- or until another option emerges. |
|
| Rock: Hey Gordo! I live in Chicago and I am a huge Cardinals' fan. You should hear the sports talk radio here since DeRo got traded to the Cardinals. They are so frustrated and are outraged that he got traded to the Cardinals. hahah! I love the trade but still think the Cards need one more bat.. Do you see any chance of landing Holliday for a package similar to Ludwick, Duncan, and McClelland. That deal works for me. Have you heard any other names they may be interested. And is the Todd Wellemeyer era finally over thankfully!!! You are the best |
Jeff Gordon: I'd be hesitant to trade McClellan or Motte now that Perez is gone. Ludwick is plenty offer for Holliday and his expiring contract. Since Cleveland will end up with another good young arm in the DeRosa deal, the Cards can't overspend on a rental outfielder.
Now, if Oakland will look for something other than relief pitching, then something could happen. |
|
Adam2: hey gordo, thanks for taking my question.
Do you feel that the DeRosa trade is going to put the front office in the position of feeling they have done their part and that this will be enough to put the Cards over the top? |
Jeff Gordon: If the team starts winning regularly, yes. A lot of guys on hand have more to give. Same goes for some guys in Memphis.
If the team continues to sputter, then look for another move or two. |
|
| Levi: Thanks for taking my question. So is Kyle Lohse set for a rehab start Thursday night in Springfield? |
| Jeff Gordon: That is what Lohse expected, as of the weekend. |
|
| JTroske: With DeRosa now in the fold why not keep him at 3rd everyday. It is obvious, and unfortunate, that we cannot expect anything out of K.Greene. With DeRosa at 3rd, we could put T.Greene at short and Ryan at 2nd. That is the best defensive infield we could put out there hands down. Skip could then move back to Right, Rasmus in center, and then Ankiel and Ludwick can fight for playing time in Left. Tony could still swith up the lineup against a lefty if needed. Then we could trade Ankiel or Duncan, or both, with DeRosa also able to play the outfield. We could def use another starting piture especially if there is a lefty available. What are the odds that we trade Ankiel and Duncan by the deadline. |
| Jeff Gordon: What trade value does either player offer right now? Ankiel is underperforming and his contract is up. Chris can't hit for power. |
|
| BradV: What's up with the inconsistency of Pineiro??? He comes out one day, gets 22 groudball outs, and the next he's giving up homeruns and fly balls. I seems like certain games he really struggles with his command. Does he do the same thing between every start? |
| Jeff Gordon: He served one big meatball Sunday, which was unfortunate. The team also played bad defense behind him, which was especially unfortunate. Overall, he has deserved better for how he has pitched. |
|
| norman roberts: Why are you a big homer?Fans like to hear the truth. |
| Jeff Gordon: You'll have to be more specific. |
|
| Cards09: It seems like I'm one of the few that are not enamored by this DeRosa trade. Maybe I'm missing something, but I was thinking of someone younger, better BA, and more pop. We lose a 95+ mph youngster, plus someone to be named later to rent DeRosa for the rest of the year. There's no guarantee we will resign him. What gives? Are expectations so low in the new DeWitt non-spending era that we're excited about a mid-level deal that can still backfire on us? Is DeRosa that good? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: DeRosa is a good fit here, and likely to re-sign. Ask the Cubs how good he is. Had the team kept him and stayed away from Bradley, they might be running away with the NL Central. |
|
FloTrain: As much as I like getting DeRosa, not a fan of sacrificing Perez.. I thought the guy had some serious potential, but you have to give talent to get talent... I just hope the other player involved is not Todd. From all I've read the guy could be a stud... And not to forget, even though it's a "strength", Franklin is only signed for '09 with an option for next... They'll need a new closer soon enough...
Ok, now that they got better options at 3rd, and I KNOW this won't happen, but trying to find a RH, speedy 2nd baseman? Put Skip in LF, then you got L-C-R of Schu-Ras-Lud/Ankiel and have the new 2 bag at leadoff ahead of Rasmus/Pujols/4 hole... Get someone on base WITH speed that can steal some bags ahead of the 3-4-5. Albert leading the team in steals is ridiculous... Get the offense going with some hit-and-runs, double steals......dare I say it, Whitey-ball? |
| Jeff Gordon: I agree with the idea of playing a top defensive outfield. Again, I DeRosa adding pop at 2B next year, Skip taking his glove to the OF and Wallace or Freese or one of the free agents playing 3B. If the team has pop at second and third, then having a leadoff guy like Skip in the OF is OK. |
|
Eric R.: Gordo,
Has it come time to cut bait with Joe Thurston? I think it's now 5 games in a row with a mental error. With DeRosa on the team I think it's fair to say he's expendable... |
| Jeff Gordon: That is fair to say. |
|
DFrost: Hey Gordo:
I applaud Mo and The Cards for the DeRosa deal. Do you think the Cards are satisfied they are set now? I'm worried they will feel This is the Deal that puts them over the top. Although it is a good deal, I'm not sold it's the one that wins the Central, although it does make them better. |
| Jeff Gordon: Let's see if this deal is a catalyst. Will it help others play better? If so, then maybe only a minor move or two will be needed. But if key guys kee struggling, more change will be needed to keep this team in contention. |
|
| tkarst: This is a question about something that is really not that important, but one that I have wondered about. Anytime the pitcher throws a ball in the dirt, it is taken out of play. As a former pitcher, I understand why as it is a great advantage to the pitcher to have a scuffed ball, What happens to the balls they throw out? Are they rubbed up and returned to play or do they become batting practice balls? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Batting practice! |
|
| Train Wreck: Who would need to sit in order for Alex Pietrangelo and Lars Eller to come up and play? The D has a solid 6 already with Johnson, Brewer, Mckee, Jackman, Polak and Cola. I know Andy wont sit somebody making around 3.5 mill. so that pretty much leaves Johnson, Cola or Polak? Thats a tough one but who would you sit in order for Piet? |
| Jeff Gordon: If Alex really came on, the team might shop Carlo around now that he has established a bit more value. This assumes that McKee picks up where he left off last year and doesn't move on in a trade. |
|
| Sean: Do you think the Indians will take Jess Todd as the "player to be named later"? |
| Jeff Gordon: I would. He could help them this year. |
|
Michael Mikoff: Gordo,
I really like the Derosa trade. I do however feel that we need one more piece to the puzzle. Do you think that the cards will still pursue Holliday? I really think he would provide the protection for Albert that we have been coveting. Not to take anything away from Derosa but I just don't think that he will be enough but he does fill a major need on this roster. Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: DeRosa has been a much better run producer than Holliday this year, but Matt, at his best, is a real force. But Matt hasn't been at his best all year and didn't hit much outside of Colorado last season. Not sure this team will pay a big premium for that. There is a deal there, but Billy may get somebody else to give more. |
|
| twobasshit: the tigers need a 1st baseman. what's the chance of sending duncan along with a couple minor leaguers for inge. that would allow the tigers to move cabrera to third. inge has already played cf, 3b and catcher. inge at third, derosa at 2nd and then trade for holiday for left field. |
| Jeff Gordon: Why would the Tigers take Duncan? |
|
| Sean: If the Cardinals don't re-sign DeRosa this offseason will they get some draft picks as compensation? If so, what round will the pick(s) be in? |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't see Mark turning into a Type A free agent. I very much see him staying here. |
|
| cardsfaninphx: So, after DeRosa, are we done? |
| Jeff Gordon: Let's see if the Cards win or not. |
|
Scott Chadbourne: Gordo,
Congrats for Mo in getting the DeRosa deal done. My question in in regard to Khalil Greene. I'll admit after his return in KC last weekend I thought maybe he had overcome his issues with his short stay on the DL. Now we know different. Did he seem more relaxed (In KC) and able to deal with the day to day issues of being a big league ball player? We all would like to see a healthy Khalil in our lineup but for his sake he must be able to get past the slumps and errors or something much worse than the DL could be the next headline in the paper, which no one wants. Does the front office think now that he can get over this issue and be a productive part of this team? |
| Jeff Gordon: It's anybody's guess with Khalil, which is why DeRosa is here now. There is no telling if he'll come back from the DL. That is why another move will be necessary. |
|
| BradV: Is there any question whether or not Wellemeyer will be making his next start, or are they waiting until Loshe comes back before they make a move in the starting rotation? Thompson has definitely been more consistent than Wellemeyer.... of course that wouldn't take much right now. |
| Jeff Gordon: There are questions about Todd, yes. Enough is enough. That is why Mortensen is here. |
|
williemcgee51: Gordo,
Is there any truth to the rumor that Clayton Mortensen will be called up? If so, what are the implications on the makeup of the team, especially the starting rotation?
I, for one, would like to see Mortensen or Hawksworth take the mound on Thursday evening with Wellemeyer becoming the long man or going to the DL... |
Jeff Gordon: Mortensen is next in line, La Russa wants his 13-man staff and you saw Wellemeyer's last outing. I would start Mortensen, put Wellemeyer in the long-man role for a while and keep Hawksworth where he is.
Khalil Greene going back to the DL seemed inevitable. |
|
| Sean: With Wellemeyer struggling, do you see the Redbirds trading for another starter? If so, who might be a possible fit? |
| Jeff Gordon: There could be a ton of guy out there. A veteran like Garland might fit snugly. I am intrigued by Mortensen, who seems to have more upside than Boggs, Walters or Hawksworth. |
|
| Jayrod3932: So we got DeRosa. Sounds like we beat the other teams to him..which is nice to see. Couple of Questions..Do the Cardinals go after another Starting pitcher? And what about trading Ankiel for another outfielder? Would he bring back enough.....Thanks Gordo! |
| Jeff Gordon: With Ankiel's contract up -- and his offensive game in regression -- his trade value has shrunk. The Yankees are saying they aren't looking for such a guy - and that team seemed like a potential fit earlier. |
|
| Mizzoufan: Gordo what do you think the chances are that the Cardinals go after Matt Holiday even after they got Derosa? I really like the Derosa deal but I think a guy like Holliday would put us over the top! |
| Jeff Gordon: The price will have to come down. |
|
Mizzou22: Gordo,
Thanks for the chat. Honestly, do you think the higher-ups for the Birds traded for Derosa in an attempt to shore up the offense, or to appease an increasingly unsettled fan base. I understand, at this point, he's a definite upgrade to whichever position he plays, but he isn't going to be the piece that puts us over the top. He isn't going to be in front of Mang (Albert) getting on base and he, more than likely, isn't going to be the protection ensuring pitchers throw to Albert. I'm not a fan that tries to find any reason to moan about my team, I'm just reserving judgment for a later date. If the outfield can pickup some sustainable offense, then this move is nice, but if they remain stagnant it doesn't make much difference. Is there more on the horizon, despite the lack of a market, or is this the last of it? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: The current OFs have to hit or this team won't make it. DeRosa fixes 3B, now that Greene has shut down again, but the team needs more from Ludwick, Ankiel and Duncan. |
|
| jlbrach: hi there,i know that people have clamored for a move but i think the price of perez and perhaps another high end prospect is a bit much for a guy like derosa who while a good ballplayer is not a difference maker...derosa's bat is going to suddenly transform the cards offense and his batting behind albert is going to get pitchers to pitch to albert more often....seems to me that if this team is going to seriously contend and make a serious run in post season we still need an impact bat and another starting pitcher..easier said than done i know! |
| Jeff Gordon: Not a lot of "impact bats" floating around out there. But a RH hitting OF would be nice. Same with a starting pitcher. |
|
| Ben: Hi Jeff, Joe Thurstan's baserunner is bad, just plain bad. The first or second week of the season he was thrown out trying to go for three in the ninth down by more than one run. O.k one strike, however he has racked more than his share of strikes on the base paths. This may seem petty to some people, but it needs to be addressed. I love Joe's hustle, but we can't have guys running into outs or getting picked off all the time. Is Joe the odd man out when we pick another pitcher up? |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd rather have Stavinoha on the bench than Thurston, since DeRosa moves to third in K. Greene's absence. |
|
Kev: Jeff,
Does Matt Holliday end his search for an appartment in St. Louis? Will the Cards look a different direction for a big bat? Could a starter like Garland or a veteran reliever be on the Cards radar for July?
Thanks,
Kev |
| Jeff Gordon: What if Troy Glaus returns? Wouldn't that be exciting? |
|
Fun Bobby: Good afternoon. So I am very excited that we landed DeRosa. It gives so many different positive messages. Even if this doesnt pan out (for some weird reason) at least the front office is giving the right message to the fans, Tony, and most importantly, el hombre. 3 quick questions...
1. I know its a little premature, but do you think we can sign DeRosa for a 2-3 year deal?
2. Do you think the Cards will still make a play for Holliday? Or for pitching (if Wellemeyer was dog food, i wouldnt even feed it to my pup, hes that bad!).
3. Dont you agree that the MVP Trophy should just go to El Hombre right now? i mean after this weekend it show, if he has an 0-fer (which HE IS HUMAN) we lose. Any stats on what our record is when albert doesnt get a hit? ESPN Sportscenter had a good piece on how Albert beat the Twins 4-3 saturday(althought the bullpen was great once again!).
Thanks for your thoughts, they are always appreciated. |
| Jeff Gordon: Yeah, give Pujols the trophy now and be done with it, |
|
Don F: Will the Cardinals remove Todd Wellemeyer and his 5.86 ERA from the rotation any time soon?
Any chance Clayton Mortensen takes Wellemeyer's spot until Loshe returns? |
| Jeff Gordon: Let's hope so. |
|
Spike in Sudbury: Will Jason Motte be the Cards closer starting the 2010 season or will he finish as the Red Birds Stopper ... closing out Game 7 of the World Series ?
Curious in Canada |
| Jeff Gordon: Franklin figures to be the closer into he proves he can't do it -- and that could be a while. That buys Motte time. He has a long way to go. |
|
| skylynx05: Now that it has been a few weeks, is there any idea why the Cardinals simply dropped Blaine Boyer? His ERA is now even lower than it was when he was with St. Louis. To send him down when we could have sent down Lohse makes little sense. If the Cards didn't want him, couldn't they have tried a move similar to what got him here in the first place? Who makes that type of decision - the coaches or management? |
Jeff Gordon: Boyer had his chance here. It would have been nice to see him do better, especially given his friendship with Wainwright.
The only sensible move with Boyer would have been to deal him for a young prospect, somebody who didn't have to go on the 40-man roster. That roster is pretty full right now. Guys are pushing upward very quickly.
I'm happier to see a guy like Hawksworth get a chance to test himself at this level instead. Ditto for Mortensen. I'd like to see Todd here, too. |
|
| iron924: Is there a worse base runner in MLB than Joe Thurston? Why does TLR continue to start him. |
| Jeff Gordon: It's pretty tough to watch. |
|
Larry: Gordo-
In Joe Strauss' article, he mentions two possibilities for the 'player-to-be-named-later' in the DeRosa trade. Is it known that both Todd and Samuel were included in the list of players for Cleveland to select from? I was expecting the PTBNL to be from a list of lower level prospects.
If so, in your opinion, did the Cardinals give up too much for DeRosa?
Interested to hear your thoughts. |
| Jeff Gordon: Cleveland spent three young pitchers to get him, so the Indians wanted plenty back. This will be a good deal for them. |
|
| Mary: So, what happened to the Holliday rumors? Do you think the Cards will do anything else? |
| Jeff Gordon: Both deals were being discussed at once. The DeRosa deal got done. And Perez was discussed with both teams. |
|
| turner5: Now that the cardinals have derosa do think that they are done making moves or could they still add another bat or pitcher? |
| Jeff Gordon: They will make moves if they need. |
|
| Mark A. Goodson: What other players will the Cardinals try to trade for or purchase by the trade deadline? I see a need for an impact hitter to give Albert protection and a starting pitcher who can eat up innings-keeping us in the game in order to win. |
| Jeff Gordon: It'll be fun to see what happens right before the trade deadline. How many teams will bail? This team needs another RH hitter, although "impact" might not be available. |
|
brettjhouston: Hey Gordo,
Longtime Cardinal fan in Houston. Thanks for your time. So now that we have bartered 2 young players for DeRosa can you see us using other young or veteran players for another bat and/or arm for the second half of the season.
And... do you share the sentiment that Wallace doesn't have a position with the cards (see Pujols) and could be a piece of a future deal.
Thanks!!
BA Card Fan |
| Jeff Gordon: Wallace is working hard on his D. We'll see. He is like Albert -- a 1B that could see time at 3B and OF before he gravitates to his natural spot. |
|
| floodtime: So, there's a play-to-be-named-later in the DeRosa deal. Besides speculation on who that might be, how does this work exactly? Is Cleveland provided a list of, say, 5 players, to be picked later? Is the player named yet not revealed for various developmental reasons (e.g., roster space, minor league rosters, etc.)? If a list is provided, can St. Louis and Cleveland strike one player each from the list provided, and then Cleveland picks among who's left? |
| Jeff Gordon: Not sure, but I would assume Cleveland would get its pick off the list. |
|
Redfeather: Hi Gordo,
With the DeRosa acquisition the Cards are obviously strengthened on several fronts as has been nicely reported by the PD SPORTSWRTITERS. Yes, your headline is what has been on my mind, which is; Can we expect anymore help so that we can take the offensive initiative because we have the firepower to attack? Are there any other names out there that are surfacing? I still think we need a big bat in the four hole. Maybe Ludwick is the guy but how long can we wait for his bat to serve up the missles that we need to launch behind Pujols assault? Pujols still needs a backup, would you agree?
Thanks so much for taking our questions Jeff!! |
| Jeff Gordon: This team needs more offense, yes. But No. 4 hitters are hard to come by. Holliday isn't a No. 4 guy. Pitchers would walk Pujols all day to face him. |
|
junglejim: Gordo,
Is Ben Sheets throwing yet, and is there any chance of him pitching this season? Do you think he could be effective during the second half of the season? |
| Jeff Gordon: His agent believes he could be a huge second-half get. Who else has that kind of stuff? |
|
| Jim Hart: I would like to know if many more moves will be made to improve the team. At this point K Green hasn't been any help at ss or 3B. I would like to see another pitcher and a power bat for the outfield added. We know that there isn't anyone out there to back up Albert other than another Albert (Himself). We have enough to trade even after the 1st trade for DeRosa, (good move there. How does the team think about this one and maybe more trades? |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes, there is enough for one more significant trade. |
|
Dave: Hey Gordo-
How to you expect the Rams defense to play out?
Do you expect a helthy Tye Hill to start at corner opposite Bartell?
Will Laurenitis start at MLB from day one and how do you see the middle of the d line play out?
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: Yeah, I'd see Hill and the Road Warrior starting out of the gate. I'm big Clifton Ryan fan, so I'd expect him and Carriker to start. |
|
Brian: Gordo,
I was at the game yesterday and after seeing first hand it is time for K. Greene to go. His at bats were the worst I have ever seen. At one point do they cut ties with him? It seems to be the Cards have handled this as best they can. No pressure on the guy at all from the team, which gets him about a week of feeling good and than he feels sorry for himself again.
I know the salary for him is ridiculous, but it is apparent that this guy is mentally done. |
| Jeff Gordon: Hard to argue that point. |
|
Eddie: Gordo,
I like the trade for DeRosa, but do you honestly think the Cards will now make a legitimate run after Holliday? If DeRosa adds a little pop and Ankiel and Ludwick continue to underachieve we are still in need of offense. Then one has to ask if the asking price of something like two big-leaguers and a prospect is worth it. Your thoughts?
Eddie |
| Jeff Gordon: And if Holliday continues to underachieve, his trade value will keep going down. It'll be fun to see what he fetches. |
|
| Doug Klein: Is it your opinion that there are "untouchables" within the farm system for the Cards? If so, who do you believe they are? |
| Jeff Gordon: No untouchables, but there are guys the team will want the world for -- like Brett Wallace. |
|
| Adam: With the Cards getting DeRosa (great trade), do you think they are finished? I know a person like Holliday is probably out of their range now, but I would still like to add some more power from the right side that can also play third (Ty Wigginton) or another bench player with pop. I also think with the loss of Perez in the bullpen, maybe another veteran arm (Russ Springer) would be nice. What are your thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: Springer's name comes a lot. I whined when the Cards let him leave, so you know I'd like that. |
|
| evolutions1: What's your opinion on Mortensen getting called up? Do you think welle might be taking a break? |
Jeff Gordon: Clayton is a top prospect. We've seen most everybody else from Memphis, so it's worth a look. I'd start him and see what he has. Let Todd take a step back and regroup.
Why go down the Kip Wells road again? |
|
Steve: Jeff,
What is in the cards for JP. One day he looks like a ground ball machine, and the next he looks like a pinball machine. Do you think he'll be resigned, and if so as GM what would you offer him? |
| Jeff Gordon: Tough question. His ERA is worthy of a new deal, but last season as pretty disappointing. There is a lot to prove yet. There could be a buyer's market for mid-level starters next winter, with so many teams unwilling to spend big. |
|
| glen: Gordo, I know you are not real high about Matt Holliday, and I fully understand why. But at the right price (who knows what that might be), I'd take the risk. He is just 29 and I am betting in the right environment (no place better than the Lou) he would flourish once again. Thoughts? |
| Jeff Gordon: My other concern about Matt, aside from the numbers, is his next contract. This team needs to lock in Albert before spending big on another hitter. Could the team afford to give Albert top dollar, pay Matt top dollar, keep Carpenter and then re-up Wainwright and Molina? Don't know about that. |
|
| evolutions1: With everyone in our outfield struggling somewhat, If we were to make another trade, who do you see as our most desirable bait? Luddy? Ankiel? |
| Jeff Gordon: Ludwick, due to his distance from free agency. |
|
| bobnd80: Hi Gordo, Does Mortenson get Wellemeyer's next start ? And in your opinion, should the Cards shut K Greene down for the year ? He can become a real distraction if they let this continue |
| Jeff Gordon: I might let him come back in September, if all is well. |
|
| Ben W: Hi Gordo. Thank you for taking the time to do these chats and answer questions. What are your thoughts on the DeRosa trade? Did the Cardinals give up too much for what may be a short term acquisition? Do you think the Cards are done for the season in terms of trades and if not who might they be looking at? |
| Jeff Gordon: DeRosa should be more than rental. I'd be shocked if he didn't re-sign. |
|
Brad: I would appreciate your thoughts on the following. Excellent move obtaining DeRosa. Thanks.
Assets:
Pujols
Molina
Shumaker
Rasmus
DeRosa
Carpenter
Franklin
Kinney
McClellan
Underachieving assets:
Ankiel
Duncan
Ludwick
Glaus
Pineiro
Lohse
Wainwright
Asset in the Minors:
Reyes
Stavinoha
Mather
Thurston
Freese
Motte
Ryan
LaRue
T. Greene
K. Greene
Robinson
Barden
Wellemeyer
Thompson |
Jeff Gordon: Kinney isn;t throwing like an asset right now, but I still like him,
Wainwright has scuffled a bit, but I don't think he is an underachiever. He has found ways to win some games.
Lohse is an asset, despite the forearm thing. |
|
CCR: Gordo,
The DeRosa trade looks great to me for now, but lately the pitching has been as questionable as the offense. Do the Cards also need to move on another starter to be able to pull away in this division? Is Mortensen's call-up today his audition for the #5 role that Wellemeyer has all but given away?
Also regarding the DeRosa deal: Do you think the Cards kept the right young bullpen guy?
Thanks! |
Jeff Gordon:
Clayton will start in the bullpen, it seems, but I'd love to see him get a couple of starts to see what his 2010 potential really is. This is the team's top starting pitching prospect, aside from the rehabbing Jaime Garcia. |
|
| Bert: Sweet, one down, 2 more to go. So, De Rosa replaces Thurston(great move). Now, what can be done about Ankiel/Duncan/Ludwick. 2 of them playing everyday is now the biggest area of concern. When can we expect help there? (And don't say De Rosa will play OF, so Thurston can play) |
| Jeff Gordon: Let's hope DeRosa handles third now that K. Greene is down again. If the four OFs, this team needs to get at least two going. And I'd like to see Stavinoha back. |
|
steely dan: Gordo,
Now that we have DeRosa we have a solid 3rd baseman that can hit, but I really don't see him as the feared clean-up hitter that can protect Pujols. Is there any chance the cardinals would still acquire an intimidating hitter, like Matt Holiday, even after the DeRosa deal? |
| Jeff Gordon: When has Holliday intimidated anybody this year? |
|
| Gmartin: Mortensen being called up. Is he filling in for Lohse or can he be replace Wellemeyer? AAA stats are pretty good but too many walks. Lack of command issues usually not a good sign for rookie pitchers. |
| Jeff Gordon: He needs polish, which is why TLR wants to start him as the "innings" guy and use Hawksworth as a set up guy, like Sunday. |
|
redneckburd72: Hello Gordo,
I must say that I'm pleased with the DeRosa trade, not only does it give more veteran presence, but it was more defining of if we have any other trades.Perez gone doesn't worry me, what does is WHO could be the player to be named later? I'm sorry but I just don't think that dealing with Beane right now would be recommended.Personally, I would like to see Beane and the Athletics EAT the mad collaboration of players that he picked up with the sole intent of fleecing the other teams farm systems.Given that DeRosa needs time to assimilate into the fold(shouldn't take long being from the NL Central). What other trade could YOU see going down....maybe Davis from AZ or Dunn from Wsh? As always thanks for your time and SORRY CUBBIES YOU CAN HAVE MILES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Jeff Gordon: The Nats have figured out that Dunn can no longer play in the OF. He needs to be a DH. Look for him to land in the AL as a result. |
|
| BillP: Hey Jeff, I heard Randy Karraker say last night that he still thinks Pronger will sign with us as a free agent next year. Do you think that's plausible? I would think Philly would go all out to lock him up since they gave so much. What do you think? |
| Jeff Gordon: I would fully expect the Flyers to sign Chris after trading so much to get him. Not signing him would be a fiasco for Philly. |
|
| Rob: Gordo, What's the deal with the Blues loading up with RH defensemen? Johnson, Polak, Peitrangelo, and now Rundbland. Please tell me Ponich and Ian Cole aren't RH. It just seems like we are getting overloaded looking for the next Al MacInnis. By the way besides Al Mac what other RH defenseman have made it into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the past 40 years? |
| Jeff Gordon: Cole, the next prospect likely to reach the Blues, also shoots from the right side. Sorry about that. |
|
Joel Koch: Gordo, the Cardinals made a great splash with DeRosa, but they can't be done. There are still two positions to fill: bat and starter. Wellemeyer has been inconsistent and we need to go get Doug Davis. The bat has been rumored to be Matt Holliday, but I'd like to see Josh Willingham (as mentioned by rbc1 in Cards Talk) added. He's cheaper and he's producing just as much or more than Holliday. What do you think about us landing Willingham?
Also, what do you think of a deal of Glaus when he is closer to returning? Deal him off as a 1B/DH and eat $4+ million on his salary? |
| Jeff Gordon: You're right on it. Mozeliak would love to see Glaus become a trade chip. Mid-level pitchers and hitters will come available, at a lower price than Beane wants. |
|
| BillP: Do you think the Blues should of made a pitch for Bouwmeester? Did they even entertain the idea? It seems like the Flames just stole him. They gave up Jordan Leopold, a defenseman from the same 99 draft just like Jackman.........just makes you wonder if the Blues could of swung this. Thanks - Have a good week! |
| Jeff Gordon: But if JayBo gets $6 million-per on a long-term deal, that diminishes the team's ability to do other things. There is a LOT of money invested D-men right now. |
|
| M Griffey: Gordo - Do you think the Cards are still looking for another bat now that they have DeRosa? If so, do you think it would be in the IF or OF? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Righthanded OF is the need. |
|
| Gmartin: K. Greene needs to be taken off the roster if his anxiety issues are still present. This has become a distraction and his long term prospects would be better served by getting appropriate medical care. Agree? |
| Jeff Gordon: Can't argue with that. |
|
| Mark Applegate: Gordo... how about artificially generating some Carl Crawford buzz? The Rays sure need young relievers and we still have a couple...and Ankiel would sure look nice there as a replacement? What say you? |
| Jeff Gordon: If Ankiel was under contract for a while and hitting with some power, he might be a starting point to making a blockbuster move. |
|
steve: Gordo:
Kudos go the front office for the DeRosa trade. Obviously if Ankiel and Ludwick do not hit, then this team can not contend as they do not have enough minor league talent to acquire all they need. Two things:
1) What are you hearing from either Coach McRae or anyone else as to what is wrong with these 2? There are a lot of at bats under their belts now since the DL and they don't seem much better.
2) What does the coaching staff see in Motte that they didn't in Perez to move Motte ahead of him in the future closer derby? To a neophyte, it looked like to me that Perez's fastball had more movement and his slider more bite, but his command was lacking. Do you agree and what does Motte offer down the line other than his fastball?
Thanks |
Jeff Gordon: Cleveland made the call on Perez. The Indians wanted him. Some Cards people like Motte's upside more, due to his arm and his make-up. He is a bulldog. Not that Chris isn't.
Ankiel can't hit off-speed stuff to save himself -- and that is a difficult skill to teach. That may become his ultimate undoing. |
|
Cardsfan In AR: Gordo,
I'm thrilled that the Birds made a move. . .any move. Are there any more? Specifically, any in terms of pitching. PITCHING WINS GAMES. Are we doing anything to upgrade our staff? |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes, Mozeliak is on the prowl. A LH in the fifth spot would be a huge get. Let's see how the market develops. |
|
| Ryan C: Gordo, It seems as if the Cards are limping their way to contend for a division title this year, and while the DeRosa trade was a big step to add some battery for El Hombre, I dont feel that its going to be enough if they want to contend after they win the Central Divsion. I've read a number of blogs and articles about aquiring Matt Holiday for say, Ludwick, Ankiel, or even Duncan. Do you think that this is feasible or even reality at this point? It seems like we need more production and currently our outfield has produced next to nothing for the Pujols. Pulojs cant hold us above water forever and if I'm him, im thinking "what else can I possibly do". |
| Jeff Gordon: Holliday is still possible, but not at the price Beane wanted. There are other 8 homer/40 RBI guys coming available. |
|
| matt: Is Joe Thurston really that stupid of a player? |
| Jeff Gordon: He's a smart player, in one sense, because he can think the game at many defensive positions. But that baserunning is shocking. |
|
| Tim: Cliff Lee? |
| Jeff Gordon: I can't imagine there is enough left to make that happen. Too bad more of the young SPs aren't putting numbers. That's what it would take. |
|
R.L. Wilson: Jeff:
At the risk of seeming stupid, I wonder the following observations: In over 50 yrs. of following baseball and in
particular the Cardinals, I've never seen so many swinging strikes at LOW outside balls by the whole team including Pulos. Quite often after taking a strike ball over the middle of the plate in hit-away,runners on
situations. Is there an explanation ?
R.L.Wilson in Memphis ( formerly from St.L ) |
| Jeff Gordon: We all feel your pain. A lot of whiffing. Tyler Greene, a fine young player, is guilty of doing just what you're saying. It's hard to watch. |
|
Fred McTaggart: The DeRosa trade was the least expensive and the least risky move the front office could have made. And that is in line with the operating principle that the front office has followed for the last several years. I have a feeling this is all we're going to get...at least for now and maybe for this season.
My question is: do you think it's enough? or do we need to do something to bolster the outfield and/or maybe the rotation as well? If those and other needs become clear by mid-July, will Mo be given the authority to do something to meet them? |
Jeff Gordon: This was NOT the least expensive move the team could have, believe us. This team will spit up two blue-chip pitching prospects for this guy. That is not cheap.
DeRosa has been way more productive than Holliday this year, in terms of run production. He was a good get. But this probably is not the only move. |
|
| Darren Huddlestun: I have heard that there are rumors of the Cardinals being interested in Jake Peavy . Any truth to that . |
| Jeff Gordon: He's hurt, so let's see what happens there. It would have to believe the Cards would have enough pitching to deal for another big-time arm. |
|
Cardinals9: Hi Gordo,
Thanks in advance for taking my question
If Thompson performs very well in today's start (e.g. - 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 hits...or something along those Koolaid lines), who do you predict gets booted out of the rotation when Lohse returns? Welly or Brad? Neither seems to have an overwhelming case over the other, but Thompson has a much better GO/AO, WHIP, OBA, and SLG. Moreover, the guy induces way more groundouts and couldn't do much worse than Wellemeyer.
In my opinion, I expect Thompson to get thrown back into the bullpen even if he throws a no-hitter today. Sad to say, he's never seemed to get a fair shake for an opportunity to make the rotation. If given the chance, he could possibly become much more consistent. Do Dunc and TLR just view him as that much more of a commodity out of the bullpen and as a swingman? |
| Jeff Gordon: I see your point, given Brad's past handling here. But Todd is really scuffling, to the point where starting him is doing him a disservice. He needs to take a step back. |
|
| Tim: Loved the DeRosa trade. Sad to see Perez go but RH flamethrowers arnt rare to find Boosted my confidence in Mo alot after it happned. As much as I like ot though I dont think it will be enough. Now I know your not much of a Holliday fan but I think him coming to St. louis could be a steal. He really wants to play in St.louis and hed be back over in the NL with a playoff team. He never wanted to play in Oakland so you got to think something going on there. I say Ludwick, Craig, Samuel, and mabye even Boggs to sweeten the pot could get it done. He doesnt have much trade value right now so asking for Wallace would be stupid. Also with all the dead money off the books with Glaus, Greene, and Kennedy we have more leverage to resign both Holliday and DeRosa. Mabye we should give it a few weeks and see how DeRosa contributes but I wouldnt want to wait too long just in case Holliday goes on a surge and asking for Wallace becomes imperitive. Thoughts? |
Jeff Gordon: If Holliday really wants to play here, he can come here as a FA. But why meet Beane's inflated price, given his poor production?
Tony really wants the guy, which is why Mo took a good run at him. |
|
tlwilborn: Greetings Great One:
What is next for the Cardinals? Is Matt Holiday still obtainable? And, as I have thought since Spring Training, the Cardinals need another pitcher. Think we can weasel Roy Oswalt away from the Astros? Thanks for you great inside opinions. They are cherished.
The Ironman |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't see Houston trading Oswalt to an arch-rival. And with the NL Central scuffling, Houston could still get in this thing. |
|
john owens: Jeff,
DeRosa move is great, anything brewing to help the lack of production coming from our outfield? |
| Jeff Gordon: In two weeks, the Cards will know more about the offensive chemistry. Maybe moving Ryan away from the No. 4 slot could help him hit to his potential for a change. |
|
Ed Seigenfeld: Now that we've finally gotten Da Rosa - and he's being hailed as the solution to the third base problem- how come in his first game he starts
in left field? |
| Jeff Gordon: The team took one more look at Khalil. It didn't go well and now Khalil is on the DL again. |
|
| Tim: Is Brandon Marshall a possibility? I know the guys a douche but mabye being around an atmosphere with a team first attitude could change him. They need a legit no.1 recieve. I dont see how they can expect the small Avery to go out the in the No.1 slot and take on the much bigger and stronger Cornerbacks and Safties and expect production. Especially with them knowing at the moment hes our only legit reciever. They'll man handle him. |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't see this team going down such a road in Year 1 of a rebuilding program. Establish the character first, then worry about talent. |
|
BuckRobley: Hey Gordo:
How long before they wise up and pull Wellemeyer from the rotation? |
| Jeff Gordon: He's got at least one more start. It better be good. |
|
| doug: Why isn't Rasmus playing in front of Ankiel and Duncan. Doesn't a .325 average in June warrant more playing time? |
| Jeff Gordon: Colby has had some tough ABs of late. TLR will keep rotating. |
|
| Mizzoufan: How good do you think Missouri will be in Football this year? They have a lot of talent but I am curious to see how you feel they will perform! |
| Jeff Gordon: I'm thinking seven or eight wins, plus a mid-level bowl. |
|
| cardsfaninparadise: Gordo, Joe Thurston must have incriminating pictures or something on TLR for him to be in the line up so much, despite light hitting, horrendous base-running, & pourous defense. Do you have any idea what he has on the Skipper? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Joe has gotten some big hits, but, yes, this has been a really ugly month of baseball. |
|
| fourdashfour: Jeff, the cards outfield of Duncan, Annkiel and Ludwick are batting in the 230's and 240's. How long can we wait for them to start producing? Jim |
| Jeff Gordon: Replacing them all will be tough, so the Cards must find a way to get one or two of them going. This is hard to watch. |
|
bshivepoker: i dont understand why albert doesnt bat clean up.
derosa could go in the 3 hole, and with ALBERT as protection (instead of the other way around), derosa should have a monster year.
Holliday would offer much more protection for Albert than Derosa, but seriously, who in baseball could offer more protection than Albert?
It's time to start getting runners on for Albert, and I think him batting 4th would do just that.
Watcha think, Gordo? |
| Jeff Gordon: I agree, but the Skipper likes to put his big bat No. 3. We saw that with Mark. |
|
| StSpiff: A few years ago I read the NFLs plan (dream) for LA was to award them 1 (or possibly 2) expansions teams after they produced a stadium. With NFL expansion going for about $1 Billion a team, don't you think the owners would frown on the Rams going in there and preventing them from splitting all those expansion dollars? |
| Jeff Gordon: I don't know if that expansion dream is realistic. There is no stadium and the economy is tough. Several NFL teams could eye LA before expansion happens again. |
|
| fourdashfour: If the cards could'nt hit some of those Twins pitchers, what do you think Lincecum will do to them? |
| Jeff Gordon: 17, 18 strikeouts . . . |
|
Matt: Hey Gordo,
I read recently in a blog by Buster Olney that the Cards can probably get Matt Holliday if they are willing to part with Brett Wallace. Two part question:
1) Do you have any knowledge confirming that?
2) If true -- would you make that deal? I know people have been ragging on his production so far this year -- but the A's lineup isn't exactly stellar. Put him w/ Pujols and see what happens? |
Jeff Gordon: Wallace could get dealt at some point, but not for a rental. Given Matt's age, IF he signed a long-term deal coming in, then dealing Wallace in that scenario would make more sense.
This guy is a big chip. If the Cards spend that chip, it should be for something permanent. |
|
| gasman: Gordo, I'm intrigued by your comment about starting pitching as I see a rotation of Carpenter, Waino, Lohse, Pineiro and say Thompson, or whomever as pretty strong. What am I missing? Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: They can use a lefty, first and foremost. Thompson/Wellemeyer isn't great at No. 5. And Lohse's chronic forearm injury this year is a concern, too. |
|
| stlgdoug: I heard there has been some speculation about Jose Reyes being traded by the Mets. What's the possibility of the Cards taking a shot at getting him? |
| Jeff Gordon: He is a cornerstone-type player. That would take a LOT, especially dealing with a big-market team. |
|
Matt: Hey Gordo,
Do you think the Blues will attempt to sign a top 6 forward. Do you see any trades comming |
| Jeff Gordon: With McKee's buyout today, there is more flexibility. But the team has Kariya, Tkachuk, Boyes, McDonald, Perron, Berglund, Backes and Oshie, plus Winchester, Steen and McClement coming back for the third line and Eller and Palushaj coming to camp. That seems like plenty. |
|
| West Coast Cards Guy: Gordo.... There is a lot of buzz around trading from strength (pitching). However the tigers should show as a cautionary tale here. A few years back they had a ton of hot young arms and after a few trades that provided marginal to on par returns they are struggling with pitching. Any thoughts? |
Jeff Gordon: You can't deal away too much depth, for the reasons you note. And spending big on more than a few starters is dicey, as the Tigers can tell you with Bonderman and Willis on the shelf.
It's all about developing lots and lots of pitching. |
|
C.Press: Who is the long-term answer at SS? Ryan, T. Greene, or outside help?
Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: I like Greene a lot, but Ryan is a stellar defender. I see those two hacking it out for the next few years. |
|
zuke: I am all about forgetting Holliday. Maybe make a run at him as a FA.
However, what you think about Dye if he becomes available? What would the cost be? |
| Jeff Gordon: There is some serious power. Chicago would want young arms. It always comes down to young arms. |
|
Brad: Gordo--
With the pick-up of DeRosa, is he set at third base or could 2nd/OF be popular homes for him? If not, could Garrett Atkins be a possibilty for the right handed bat? He has started to heat up in June. Thanks in advance. |
| Jeff Gordon: DeRosa can go wherever. IF Atkins hit and was available at the right price, Mark could play 2b and let Skip go to the outfield. |
|
danandjonelle: There are certain measurables for good baseball performance--for instance .300 and over as a batting average.
What would be major league yardsticks for fielding percentages of shortstops, third basemen and second basemen? |
| Jeff Gordon: Those are deceptive. A guy could have a phenomenal fielding percentage but no range. How many plays does a guy make? The stat-heads have complex formulas to rate such guys. |
|
Dave: Jeff:
In my opinion I don't think the cardinals will make another major splash in the trade market but I do think they should get Doug Davis of the diamondbacks. He's 3-8 but thats deceiving he has a 3.28 era. I don't think he would take that much to get but what do you think it would take to get him? |
| Jeff Gordon: He's getting a lot of votes today. |
|
| ronjon1702: Gordon is there anyway you could stop answering all these questions? I try to catch up and i cant. I dont have that much free time in the day. PS, when will the rams let me know when i can watch practice during training camp. |
| Jeff Gordon: I would imagine we'll have a schedule soon for what fans can see. Fans from outside the area want to come in. Seriously, some do. |
|
| stlgdoug: I heard on the radio in KC that the Mets may try and move Reyes, is it possible the Cardinals could try to deal for him? |
| Jeff Gordon: The other issue with Reyes is the huge money it would take. Albert needs to be covered first. |
|
| West Coast Cards Guy: We have seen in the past where a GM will go to the league to seek help (compensation) when he feels as though a team did not disclose all info about a player prior to a trade. Can the cards use this approach with San Diego given K.G.'s battle with A.D. not being disclosed? Does the fact that the pitchers we gave back both having their arms blow up have an impact? |
| Jeff Gordon: I've talked to Mo about that and the franchise has given it some thought, but there is plenty of gray area with this malady. It's not a bad shoulder. |
|
| Matt: Thanks for taking my question. First, great to see the DeRosa trade. He is an excellent addition. Good work to the FO to get this done, and early. My real question is as follows: It seems the Cards and Blues have similar approaches lately with a focus on homegrown talent (of which I am excited for both) and similar constraints in terms of limited FA activity due to mid-market budget concerns. Yet they have elicited completely different fan reactions. While the Blues seem to be on a good will rennaisance, the Cards seem to get killed in fan nation. This despite the Cards greater success recently with a WS under their belt, consistent competition for the league title year in year out, and local ownership. It would seem the opposite should be true. In your opinion, what is the cause of this difference and what can be done to rectify it? |
| Jeff Gordon: Cards fans have great expectations. They have earned that right with their support. Blues fans are just grateful their organization finally has a direction, one that is obviously working. |
|
| JL: How about luke scott? Do you like him as a OF? What would it take to get him? He has a little power and good against lefties even though he is one. |
| Jeff Gordon: He has been up and down, like the guys here. |
|
KyleV: Gordo, thanks for the chat.
If the Chicago White Sox are shopping Jermaine Dye, what would he fetch? I'm thinking a top SP prospect and 1 or 2 outfield prospects?
Could the Cardinals get him and could he play left field? |
| Jeff Gordon: He is more of a No. 6 hitter, but he has real power. I'd think the price is lower than Holliday's price. |
|
| HalT: Hey Jeff. As a lifelong Cards fan who lives in Chicago I appreciate your even and fair evaluations of the Cardinals in the face of the near hysteria of some Cardinal fans. Who do you believe are "impact" bats that might be available at the trade deadline? Are there any that could impact the Cardinal's post-season chances? Great work Jeff. |
| Jeff Gordon: Compared to Albert, everybody is a lesser hitter, eh? I'm not sure anybody the team could get would top DeRosa's run production of the last few years. |
|
| Matt: With the recent trade yielding two of our prospects, it would seem we only have enough firepower for one more significant trade. However we have two holes to fill (RH outfield hitter, starting pitchter). There are no real free agents still out there for the first opening, but there are still Sheets and Martinez out there for pitching. It would seem to make sense to make a play for for one of these guys and then trade for the outfield bat. What is the market for Sheets and Martinez right now, how do they grade out in terms of the probability of risk / reward given their injuries, and what would it take to get one? |
Jeff Gordon: Martinez wants about $3 million plus incentives for the rest of the season. Scouts worry about his last fastball and wonder if he's worth that.
Sheets will want to score big. He has top of the rotation stuff. |
|
| Brett: Gordo...with the current OFers not producing, is there a need for an OF bat this offseason and for the long term? Rasmus is our only OF option I like right now and Jones or whomever else will likely be a few years off. Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: Mather's third wrist operation is also a bummer. He could have helped in this scenario. |
|
cardsfan99: Gordo,
It is my feeling that Ankiel is a head case and needs to be moved while he still has any worth at all to other clubs. I also feel like Dunc is too streaky in the batters box and we all know he wouldn't have made the play De Rosa made last night in left.
What do you think we could get for those two and possibly a relief pitcher? |
| Jeff Gordon: I'd be shocked if Rick (expiring contract) or Chris (post-surgery power loss) has much value. |
|
zuke: I am tired from hearing from of all these "bat Albert" 4th people. Why, because tradtion says but your power guy there. Well Actually, Pujols is a great #3 who happens to alot of home runs.
Why don't people put it the way it really is and say "Lets take away 20 Abs from albert so I can feel better he is hitting 4th" |
Jeff Gordon: Finally a comment the Skipper could agree with!
I have to move on to other duties today. See you next week! |
