drelboc: Hey Gordo;
What can you tell me about Colby Rasmus injury history? Most recently I understand he strained his knee when he barely checked his swing. It seems it does not take much to punch him out of the lineup for a period of time. If this is the case, maybe he should be used as a trade chip before his value is decreased because of the time he may be on the DL throughout his career.
Could he be a J.D. DREW DeJa-Vue while wearing the "Birds on the Bat"?
Thanks again Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus suffered a mild groin strain this year, then the weird knee injury. But he played a team-high 128 games for Springfield last season and 131 games the season before -- in shorter minor league seasons, mind you. So there is no concern about his durability.
Colby has made a rapid climb since signing as a high school player. He won't turn 22 until Aug. 11. He will be a 15-year starter in the majors, so there is no reason to deal him.
nick banche: Jeff, Cards management says " we won't react to brewer/cub moves", "we won't overpay"'"we won't mortgage the future", My observations, if you can't keep pace with the competition, you lose' the market is what the market is, you either pay or do without, and finnaly, the market values your assets, apparently not as high as luhnows opinion of his drafts. Seems like this year is toast. Your opinion please?
Jeff Gordon: Look for the Cards to make their big moves in the off-season, when up to one-third of their payroll disappears -- giving Mozeliak the chance to make upgrades without moving his better prospects. He will also be in a better position to move surplus prospects for either veteran help or more prospects.
I don't believe the Cards overvalue their individual prospects. But the organization is very committed to an overall plan of hoarding young players and letting them improve through job competition. When the Cards finally get a critical mass of home-grown players, they will be able to deal from strength.
Faris Chehabi: For the wide receivers that don't make the 53 man roster, will they still be on our team on practice squad?
Jeff Gordon: Interesting question. If Dane Looker, Dante Hall and Drew Bennett really ARE prepared to make big contributions, then one of the younger receivers gets bumped. Stanley has been terrific, by all accounts. Burton appears to be a great get, too. And Avery has unusual speed. If you put a kid on the practice squad, you risk losing him to another team with a roster opening.
A tough call could be looming. Linehan loves Looker and Hall, if healthy, gives the Rams an element they have lacked for some time on special teams.
Anthony: Which receiver do you think will make the team? I think it's time we get rid of Dane Looker. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Before camp, I would have agreed -- since his role as Wilkins' holder went away. But he is making a great case for making the squad.
Jonathan: If Looker gets cut, which he should, who will be the long snapper?
Jeff Gordon: If Looker isn't there to hold, Donnie Jones could do it.
Larry: What will the cornerback depth chart look like. After Hill and Brown, who will be right after them?
Jeff Gordon: With Brown out, Ron Bartell has stepped in again. My only concern: Bartell is so handy as a utility guy -- and might be one of the best options to fill in if either safety got hurt.
Faris Chehabi: Is there absolutely no way that John Greco starts?
Jeff Gordon: Well, a LOT of guys would have to get hurt. He appears better suited to play guard than tackle and the competition there is fierce. It appears thjis team still needs a quality third tackle to push Barron and/or fill-in for Pace if the Big O gets hurt again.
zimmy: When spezio was around i think he was our emergency catcher. since his departure who is the emergency closer now ? Miles?
Jeff Gordon: I don't know there is one -- which is why Josh Phelps, just killing the ball at Memphis this season, would be a welcome addition to the bench. That is one of the roles he could fill.
theimpossibleemu: With this season proving how important the closer position is, and with Perez's lack of command leaving no internal options for next year, what are the chances of the Cardinals dropping big dollars in an attempt to sign the leagues most dominant closer K-Rod in the off season? Or, even though the Cards will have 7 million of Izzy's money free, is 12 million a year too much for a relief pitcher even if they are lights out in the 9th?
Jeff Gordon: No, it would not be outrageous to pay that sort of money for K-Rod. But it would be very difficult to outbid Angels for him. And the closer role is an odd thing -- many of the best candidates come out of nowhere for the job. Right now the best internal candidate might be Kyle McClellan -- and that could be a real option should the team coax Lohse into sticking around. Otherwise, Kyle seems headed to the rotation
Rick: Hey, what's going on with Mulder? I have heard that they want him to rest for 2 more weeks - but not what they think is wrong. Is it scar tissue? Does he need more surgery? Does he go on a rehab assignment? Or is he going to retire?
Jeff Gordon: At this point, Cards management assumes he won't pitch again. A lot of doctors looked at him and none saw any need for more surgery. And if he DID need more work, he would retire.
It would be nice if he tried to throw again, especially with the roster expansion looming and the Cards hungry for lefty help of any description. But at this point, his issues are much mental as physical.
Bill: Hey Jeff, down the line, what's your view on the KHL?
1) do you see it eventually diluting the talent level in the NHL?
2) will this mean more North Americans will again populate NHL Rosters in the future?
3) and I even saw an article where one writer suggests that the NHL should eventually look into a GHL - Global Hockey League and consider merging with the KHL. Now that I can't see happening, do you?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Just as European basketball teams are luring NBA starters, so will the KHL -- although its cities aren't the most attractive to those born and raised in North America. Long-term, I would see real world championships between NBA and NHL teams and the winners of a European play-off. That would be marketing gold.
Pulling off a Global League would be tough, though, since the folks with money over there don't want to cede control to Gary Bettman and David Stern. But we will see a LOT of top hockey and basketball talent over there.
Wouldn't it be cool to see some of the better Euro teams on TV here?
virginiatom: Two quick questions: What kind of camps are Drew Bennett and Adam Carricker having so far this summer? Is there anyone that the coaches are really excited about this year based on their performance in camp?
Jeff Gordon: Bennett is getting better reports this summer. Carriker is the same guy, a relentless worker ticketed for big things this season. Culberson is a fun guy for camp visitors to watch, since he is making a big play for a starting LB role with Draft nicked up. Stanley is another guy who has jumped out. Both of these guys made the most of their playing time late last season and both seem hungry for regular work this year.
Chaz: Who do you believe will be in a cardinal's uniform next April considering all the money that will be coming off the books,(Izzy,Mulder,Juan) to name a few.
Thanks
Chaz
Jeff Gordon: Great question. If I'm Mozeliak, I try to take some of that $30-plus million and lock Ankiel into a long-term deal and re-sign Lohse. After that, Cabrera would be a nice "get" at shortstop, but he will command big dollars as the top free agent available. Furcal would also be costly and you wonder about his durability. Does Renteria have another year left? That is still another option, since Detroit seems likely to turn him out.
I don't see the Cards going after Sheets or Sabathia for the rotation, given the extraordinary cost/risk factor, but free-agent relievers like Brian Fuentes and Dan Wheeler ought to get a good look.
virginiatom: When do the Rams start to get concerned about Jackson's absences impacting his ability to learn the new offense installed by Al Suanders? In his absence, have you seen either Pittman or Minor showing the skills to be a true #1 back should Jackson go down?
Jeff Gordon: I believe we'll see Jackson before long. He has made his point and he will get his contract extension, as long as his demands for money and structure make sense. In his absence, Pittman has done some good things -- building on a solid off-season. I'm not sure he is really to be a 200-carry player, but he is a better No. 2 than Leonard.
Tackleberry: Gordo,
What is the deal with Tony's recent obsession with Izturis? Pinch-hitting Izturis for Schumaker on Saturday night, and then Izturis getting set down looking at strike three, was ridiculous. I know Ryan has not been what the team had hoped, but give him a few games in a row to get some cuts. If I remember correctly he played pretty well when Izturis was hurt.
Jeff Gordon: Izturis has hit a bit better lately and he is using his speed well. But I, too, am a Brendan Ryan fan. And Sunday I was waiting for Izturis to bunt in that spot. He got hit by a pitch, which was a gift.
Given the high cost of free-agent shortstops, it seems like the Cards need to play the heck out of Ryan to see what they really have there.
st3v346: Jeff: Do you really believe Colby Rasmus is the real thing and not another Jim Lindeman? I remember Jim was the next coming of Stan; we all know what happened back then. We traded Andy Van Slyke a very good outfielder with some pop and Lindeman was a complete bust!!
With Rasmus' many injuries I see another Lindeman in the making. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Lindeman was never universally regarded as one of the top 10 prospects in baseball, as Rasmus is. Independent experts and analysts all love Colby. As noted earlier, Rasmus was a virtual iron man as a pro until the last month.
roger from lake tahoe: gordo - did i dream it or did i really see woody williams on the cards bench? has there been any progress in making a trade with cleveland to acquire brian barton or will he be back with the big club? will we see colby in sept? when will the prognosis be known on chris duncan. when is surgery scheduled and how long do they forecast recovery? send him best wished from california cardinal nation. thanks
Jeff Gordon: Barton will be back with the big club. Duncan's injury creates the opening for him before the September roster expansion. As for Chris, his long-term prognosis is iffy. There is no guarantee he will regain the flexibility needed to play baseball. It may be well into next year before we know what his future looks like.
roger from lake tahoe: can you fill me in on john wasdin. he has nice stats in memphis but there must be some reason we haven't seen him in st. louis. i know he has big league experience. thanks gordo
Jeff Gordon: He is a depth guy, signed for emergency use. He fell behind some of the kids at Memphis earlier this year as the team went with an all-prospect rotation. But he could make it back to the bigs this month if any of the other Cards hurlers go down. Boggs, Parisi and Jimenez have all had their chances.
Stan: Jeff,
Being a ways away ( Utah ) from the Rams I am thankful for this forum. I am surprised that the Jackson hold out is not getting more play nationally. What's the hold up? Are we looking at another Dickerson/Bettis situation. They start here and become Hall of Famer's somewhere else?
And as always, thanks for your time,
Stan
Jeff Gordon: There is no reason for it to go that far. Jackson will throw away a lot of near-term money by taking this holdout deep and the Rams can scarcely afford to lose one of their top assets while coming back from 3-13. As you have seen, he is a big part of their marketing program.
craig: Jeff,
Football is in the air. Since it is obvious the Rams are not going to budge on Steven Jackson until he reports to camp, what is left for him to prove? Seems to me like he's continuing to be a crybaby who's trying to get his way at the expense of the team. If he wants more money, fine. But you have to come to camp to get it, so show up dummy!! If all I had to do was fly to Wisconsin and then my boss would start negotiating a new contract with me, that was for that much money, I'd be there faster than a fart in a windstorm. I guess you've just got to see what a great leader / passionate player Steven is in person, because from an outsiders perspective, I'd really like to choke the crap out of him.
Jeff Gordon: Look, these things happen. It happened with Pace and it wasn't a big deal. He got signed and he played on. The Rams don't want this holdout to last that long - and I would guess Jackson feels the same way. Both sides have too much to lose by letting this thing linger.
alkem91: Gordo,
will the cards go after KRod and Ohman in the offseason since they will no longer be paying 30 million on Moulder, Izzy, Looper, Lohse and Encarnacion? Or are they going to continue to plead poverty?
amk
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will have a $100 million-plus payroll next year. And the exit of all that payroll creates real opportunities. Much of that money, though, should go to locking in Ankiel and keeping Lohse. Both have proven their value here.
mike: Joe
No question- just state the obvious, even tho it won't matter. The management lost this one tongiht. what have you guys said all season- we need a big bat & pitching. what cost the series- 2 minor league batters facing lidge- it's a shame management does not really care about Albert or the Molina, or Carp or any of the vets. Their answer is to promote from AAA & expect to reach post season. What a joke!!
Jeff Gordon: It's also a shame that Pujols went hitless in the series while guys like Mather, Ludwick and Glaus did some damage. Molina had his RBI opportunities as well.
dd79: Gordo,
Do you think McRae is behind the whole "swing at the first pitch" mentality? I cannot believe the way we ended that game against Lidge. I understand he has a mean slider, but everyone who worked the count got on base. Why does every other team work our bullpen over with 2-0 counts and foul balls, and our guys simply death grip the bat and swing into an 0-2 count? I just don't buy Joe Morgan saying Nick and Joe struck out because they've never seen the guy. Those were god-awful at-bats.
Jeff Gordon: Well, there is a reason why Lidge has converted every save opportunity this season and the Phillies are 50-0 when leading after eight innings. You swing early looking for the fastball because you know you will get a slider with two strikes. When Lidge got in trouble, he forget the fastball and threw one killer slider after another. Tip you hat to him.
skelly89: Gordo in the Cards Talk Forum a fella has been really good at picking the Cardinals monthly series and record have you checked it out? The bullpen has been the death of the Cardinals this year, thus far, Waino to the pen or the rotation, to eat innings, when he returns?
Jeff Gordon: Wainwright's role depends on what Isringhausen does. It is a toss up!
Arturo: Gordo!
What's your take on our lack of moves at the deadline? We have a surplus of players/prospects who won't all be back next year. some of their contracts expire and we lose all rights to them when they walk ie Looper, Izzy, Lohse. Plus not all of the outfielders will be around next season. I'd imagine Dunc & Barton will be gone too. Wouldn't It have been prudent to get something for these guys before they walk away?
Jeff Gordon: Where are the prospects going? The Cards will control Barton for the next several years. The same could be true with Duncan, IF he comes back his neck injury. The Cards WILL have a lot of vets leaving the payroll, creating room for free agents, trade acquisitions or prospects. Fans don't want to hear it, but '09 looks great.
Mike: Gordo I know we are only one game back in the wild card but our bull pen is very poor to say the least. Do you think with 26 blown saves and on pace to break a team record for blown saves can you see us actually winning the wild card?
Jeff Gordon: No, I don't see this team winning the wild card -- unless the Brewers and Phillies collapse. I've never seen this as a playoff team, only a team that would contend this season and then make its move next year.
Buk: Greetings from Thailand. Since the Cards seem content to overachieve in 2008 and "go for it" next year (this team reminds me of the movie Major League, where ownership hopes they lose and the players keep winning with a patched together lineup of misfits), who are some pending free agents who could potentially put the cards over the top? I know it is early, but can you think of any realistic targets for the 2009 Cardinals?
Jeff Gordon: There are some interesting guys, like Furcal and Cabrera at shortstop. Fuentes for the bullpen would have to be the top target. I'd overspend for him out of necessity. I don't them in the Sabathia or Sheets hunt, but Carpenter's return to full-time duty will give this team a nice top of the rotation. The ascension of Rasmus and progress of the other young outfielders will make a big difference, too.
Rich: Hey Gordo,
At what point do you think the Rams will relent on their stance of not negotiating a new contract for Jackson until he is in camp? Their into the second week of camp and the guy that is supposed to be the focal point of their offense still isn't on the field.
Thanks for hosting these chats.
Rich
Jeff Gordon: Jackson has too much to lose to stay out. That said, there are always ways for Zygmunt to finesse his hard line and assure Jackson that he will get a fair deal. Jay is a pro and so is Steven's agent. Neither are pushovers, but neither is stupid.
Brett: A lot has been said about the impact bat. Do we need one now that Ludwick has been this good, or is he just a fluke? Do the Cards go after a slugger in the offseason with all the money coming off the books?
Jeff Gordon: I don't think Ludwick is a fluke. He has been well-scouted and he is still cranking homers. Rasmus will add a bat. Mather looks like a viable threat, too. Ankiel ought to keep improving. So why chase after Holliday?
WDMay35: It appears that there is no lead safe from the Cardinals bullpen and clutch hitting is rare.
Jeff Gordon: Agree with the first point. And clutch hitting against top-end pitching is rare. This team can kill average to bad pitching all day.
Ray R.: Gordo-
Who has been the biggest suprise so far in camp? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: The guys watching every practice like the kid linebackers. That is critical, since there are no veteran linebackers behind the top four.
HEG: Gordo up to this point in the Cards season their failure is due to the bullpen; TLR can put the blame all he wants on the offense but all season the leads have evaporated in the 7th,8th,&9th innings. Albert is a great player with great stats but he is not the producer he was a couple years ago;the best the Cardinals could hope for this season is wild card because the Cubs are far superior to other teams in division;if by chance the Cards could make playoffs they would be in pretty good shape with 3 starters and Weino in as the closer; but that is long shot since their wiil be about 3 teams vieing for the wild card; agree or disagree?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, this team is a longshot for the playoffs. It will be a couple of weeks before Wainwright can help. In the meantime, the pen will keep wearing down.
ueaces: Hi Gordo,
In would seem, in my view, the clock is ticking on Kyle Lohse. As this season seems to be slowly sliding away from the Cardinals, I beleive it would be paramount about the club deciding on either to offer him, or be prepared to move him. Mo can't always reveal all, but I would find in hard to beleive that some prilimiary discussions have not already happened. There is virually no chance of resigning KL once he hits the open market. Just as well make some team overpay for him if the Cards fall out of the race, which is what appears to be happening.
Jeff Gordon: Boras wants to make a big score with this guy, so that is the obstacle. At least the Cards would get nice a nice compensation pick for Lohse if he signs for stupid money elsewhere.
Steve: Jeff I understand that it's still very early, but I really think the Rams should contend for the NFC West title. I think that the offensive line is a vastly improved unit from last year's disaster, and the return to health of starters on offense is going to make a big difference. I also think that Marc Bulger is by far and above the 2nd best QB in the NFC(behind Farve). It's not fair to judge him on his play last year, Peyton Manning would have posted terrible stats playing behind the line we fielded. Al Saunders is going to make a huge difference. I also believe that the defense will be a top 10 unit(Not 5, but I could see it at 8 or 9). Again, this is all provided the team STAYS HEALTHY. I think they are due for some luck though, because the past 2 years injuries have hurt their chances.
Jeff Gordon: I see improvement for the reasons you state, but I don't see the Seahawks fading in Holmgren's farewell tour and I like the Gridbirds this year. Just getting back to 8-8 would be a chore for the Rams with this schedule.
Tackleberry: I am fearful that a couple good series' versus the lowely Padres and the ravaged Braves have given this team, it's ownership, and it's fans a false sense of confidence in their offense. If you look at the Cards scoring output against "contending" teams since July 1st, they are averaging 3.05 runs per game. In 19 games versus Chicago, Philly, NY Mets, and Milwaukee they have scored a grand total of 58 runs. In the other 11 games in this stretch of time, against "non-contenders" they have scored 89 runs, or 8.09 runs per game. So they prey on the weak, but where is the production against the better teams?
Still think we don't need a bat?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards need to get better against better pitching, and that includes Albert. But the only spot this team could really upgrade offensively is shortstop. Production at the other spots has been good and what's available wouldn't a big difference.
Is Jason Bay really better than Ludwick? I never understood why Cards fans wanted that deal.
Loren Baker: Just curious if you have heard much about Clifton Ryan so far this year. Is he really going to be the steal he seemed last year.
Jeff Gordon: I'm a big Ryan guy. He has a great attitude and he has learned from the veterans well. If he stays healthy, expect big things.
bob in indiana: gordo,
who's got the toughest 2 month schedule coming up. The cards ,cubs or brewers
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have it the worst.
Dan in Dodge City, KS: Gordo, I believe Drew Bennett got a bad rap last year. He was injured early, then the ENTIRE offense struggled with the decimated O-Line, which led to Bulger running for his life (then ultimately injured). How has Bennett looked in camp, and what are the realistic expectations for him as the number 2 WR this year?
Jeff Gordon: He was horrible last year. He didn't seem to know the offense. He was hurt, true, but he didn't show much. This year he has opportunity AND competition. The team sent a message by drafting two guys to push him. That said, the early reports are good.
bfulton: As always, thanks for doing these chats. I understand that the Rams' Little and Hall look great and that Long is finally coming along. Can you confirm? Is it because they really are good or because the Rams' OTs are bad?
Jeff Gordon: By all accounts, those guys are all excelling. But I would be worried about tackle depth. That has to be a concern.
Carl: Dear J.G.,
When Air Martz was running the offense in St. Louis, everyone knows that it was the most beautiful thing to watch. One thing that made it amazing to watch is that Marc Bulger often threw completions that traveled in the air for 20-25 yards down the field to wide receivers. Will Bulger consistently attempt those kinds of passes in Al Saunders offense as well every game?
2.) As it relates to the receivers, who's the front runners for the 3rd and 4th receiver spots? And will Derek Stanley make the team? He's been impressive,oh, and by the way, Stanley ran a 4.34 40 yard dash in college as well.
Jeff Gordon: Saunders has lots of downfield passing in his offense, in addition to extensive use of the tight end and a nice power running scheme. IF the team protects Bulger, his accuracy will serve the teams well.
Great competition at WR. Stanley has made a move. He is pushing the draft picks and Hall. Poor Marques Hagans.
Dwayne: Hey Jeff,
Why doesnt Hasslet give Bartell a look at FS and let
O.J(who is way more physical) man the SS spot.
BTW whos the fastest on the rams
Hill
Wade
Avery
King
Thanks, Jeff
Jeff Gordon: We'll ask the experts about the speed, but I'm guessing Wade and Avery would fight it out for No. 1.
As for Bartell, he is too valuable at corner to move to safety unless there is an injury. Remember, the team still believes in Chavous -- even if the fans don't.
donald s box: Hey Gordo looks like we are watching a sinking ship, the cardinals stood pack and made no moves on the trade front.A now look at whats going on bull pen gives a way another game. But don;t put all the blame on them, tony and mow deserve some. Tony with some of the moves he have made, like batting ankiel for molina, and mo for not getting some help in the pen.Bonds would of been a big help maybe put us over. The season is not over but you can see the wrighting on the wall, not enought pop in the line up and no relief help congradulation mo and dewitt
Jeff Gordon: When this team is a powerhouse next year, you will understand the method to their madness.
Demasoni: Ok I am tired of throwing up a little in my mouth everytime we have a lead late in the games. I almost can guarantee that the pen will blow it. Ughhhhh how can Don Tony say it isn't the bullpen's fault? Of course every team would like to score 8 runs a game and not have to worry about their pen but you do have the one run games that need to be held. I am just sick with watching us piss away this division because of our bullpen. A conservative estimate on blown saves etc..would put the Cards at 7 games up on the Chubs. How can Tony not see that?
Grrrrrrrrrrr we need some help in the pen BAD!!!
Jeff Gordon: It would help if Tony used fewer relievers and wasn't so anxious to play the match-up game. This staff is too weary to play that game right now.
craig wilson-matson: Hi Gordo , Its the begining of a new year and i am excited with our chances to compete in the NFC west.
I believe our offence will be much improved but i am concerned about the toughness of our defence against the run. I remember the Cincinnati , and the Steeler games which showed our lack of toughness and containment vs speed backs and also the weakness to power running game .This type of performance is frustrating to fans and makes us a mark when other teams gameplan us !!
I dont know we have done anything past the DL to get better. Chiller was much better than credited and he is no longer here! We are in a divison with good running teams and a team in Arizona that has WR as strong as RB'S .
Whadda we gonna do to avoid getting ran over like a lighweight JV Squad as we have in past ??!!
Jeff Gordon: I like the Rams against the run this year. The front wall will be tough, with Ryan, Carriker and Long starting with Little. Adeyanju is strong against the run as well. I like Culberson against at LB this year. A heavier hitter at safety would help, I'd give you that. Keeping Pisa healthy would be a nice change of pace as well.
BCRamsFans: What's the story on Avery? He's an expensive asset (early round two, first WR taken) and we need early positive returns-especially given our serious lack of team speed on offense. Early prognosis for his impact this year? And, his health--what's the story on his return?
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: He's falling behind fast, since Stanley is having a great camp to date and Burton can catch the ball. Also, Hall and Looker have responded to the challenge. Assuming Donnie heals up, I'd see him breaking in as a fourth WR in big passing situations. He still needs to master route running at this level.
Eric: Hey Gordo,
Let me just say that I have never faced Lidge, and I feel very inadequate second-guessing professionals, etc.
BUT, that being said: What ever happened to taking a strike when you are down runs in the ninth? Especially when Lidge just hit the guy before you.
Thanks Gordo!
Jeff Gordon: You assume Lidge will throw heat early, getting ahead in the count to set up the slider. In that situation, you are looking for something in your zone to drive. But when Brad came out throw sliders, that wasn't fair.
Lawarence Marmie: If Jim Haslett's defense finishes in the bottom third of the league once again, but his demeanor is especially "Fiery"- does that impassioned character trait continue to override his subpar performance as DC with the Rams and put him in consideration for more head coaching jobs this year?
Jeff Gordon: If the Rams stay reasonably healthy, they won't finish in the bottom third again. But if they lose all their pass rushers, look out below!
James Arnold: Jeff:
Please enlighten me if there is any hope or talk that Mo will try and make a move this year through waivers/trade deadline? It hopelessly appears that Dewitt is not REALLy going to allow any additional payroll this or next season.
Jeff Gordon: Payroll is not an issue. The Cards could add money this year, if something popped up. Trading prospects was the issue. Look for a $100 million plus payroll next year, which will create room for multiple additions.
rich: Jeff: Any idea why Pujols tap the catchers and umpires shin guards with his bat whenever he comes up to bat for the first time?
Jeff Gordon: I never noticed that, but ballplayers are into rituals.
Cardinals101: Jeff what happened in the race last night, why didn't you put more gas in the tank!
Jeff Gordon: I don't know . . . my fuel gauge looked fine . . .
webslingerinstl: Jeff: Will the Cards going the route of claiming a few DFAs again by the end of the month?
Jeff Gordon: I would assume they will be on the prowl for pitching of any and all forms.
Tom: Hi Jeff,
How do you see the O-line competiton shaking out, who do you think will be the starting 5?
Jeff Gordon: IF everybody is healthy, I see Pace-Bell-Incognito-Setterstrom-Barron. Mark has made a strong comeback from his injury and he took the early lead at guard. Now Richie is over there. Romberg is a solid player, but I could see the Rams going with maximum muscle.
Ryan Judd: Hey Gordo,
I was looking at the Cardinals remaining schedule and don't understand why we have so many off days coming up? The Cards have played multiple 10 day or more in a row stretches with no off days, yet between 08/18 and 09/15, they have seven off days. Any reason why the schedule is so diffrent than in years past?
Jeff Gordon: Some make-up games crowded the schedule. Now the much-needed off-days will allow the bullpen to rest and recover.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Can/will Joel Piniero ever get back to form and be a 6 inning, 3-4 ER per game pitcher? It seems he hasn't missed a bat in a month, and he is critical to this teams success even with Carp and Wainwright returning.
I like this rotation if it lines up Wainwright, Lohse, Carp, Piniero and Wellemeyer/Looper. I think it's a whole different story if we have to rely on Wellemeyer and Looper as our 3 and 4. Is it time to give Garcia a longer look in the rotation, or is this a pipe dream with TLR at the helm?
Jeff Gordon: Garcia will get every chance to make the rotation, since he is the sole lefty on the cusp in the organization. As for Pineiro, there is nothing physically wrong with him. He just isn't sharp or consistent. It's up to him to fix that.
Scott S.: Jeff - Please help me with this one ... Mo doesn't trade any of the pending free agents for help in the future (in the form of prospects). And he doesn't trade any prospects for help today (in the form of bullpen help or a bench bat that can hit a slider). What & when exactly are the Cards playing for...
Jeff Gordon: The reason why the Cards didn't sell is that they are still very much in the hunt. And exiting free agents will generate compensatory draft picks -- which the Cards are better equipped to exploit. That is why few teams went into "sell" mode at the deadline. Plus with Lohse, the Cards still hope to keep him around long term.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
As a die-hard Cardinal fan stuck in Brewer territory, I have spent much of my time/energy wrapped up in the baseball race. The Rams are holding camp just down the street from me right now...in a nutshell, can you give me a realistic projection on what we can expect from the 2008 Rams?
Team MVP?
Improved Defense?
Strength of Schedule?
Other teams in the division's projections?
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Jackson is the team MVP, which is why he wants big money. The "D" will improved, but the tough schedule -- especially early -- will make it tough to reach the playoffs.
I see Arizona taking a run at Seattle for the division title. All hail Kurt Warner!
Ryan Judd: Hey Gordo,
While watching another tough game last night, I noticed when Garcia went to warm up they showed the bullpen and Springer was sitting down talking to another Cardinal in the pen. Garcia comes in and faced two batters and couldn't have thrown more than a half dozen pitches and Springer is sent in. Springer looked out he had no time to warm up and wasn't ready to go. Does Tony give these guys enough time to get loose before coming in especially for a guy wo is close to forty or has it always been like this and I never noticed before?
Jeff Gordon: I assume that Springer knew he would be next in and that he had time to get ready. He has pitched so much lately, I don't know if he needs more time or less time to get ready. That is a good question.
Ryan Judd: What was your thoughts on another trade deadline passing with no action being taken? I find it hard to believe that no one was available again? I know the asking price was high, but we have needed bullpen help ALL year long and continue to put up staggering blown save totals while still have a chance to make the playoffs. I understand the approach as a transition year and keeping prospects, however, nothing is guaranteed next year or beyond, don't you have to do something this year?
Jeff Gordon: The fact so many other teams failed to land bullpen help tells you how overpriced the relievers were. Had the Mets and Phillies gotten bullpen help at the end, then you could ask questions.
Ryan Judd: Hey Gordo,
The Cardinal ownership had had a great run the past twelve years without question. Since the World Series win, the same cycle seems to keep going on. We are told that they have financial flexibility to address needs in the offseason, yet their "market value" is different with the rest of baseball and are outbid. Then it is we can acquire at the trade deadline, but " no one is available" or "not a good fit" seems to be the response when nothing is done. As long as the sellouts continue, will management really follow through on these promises?
Jeff Gordon: Do you really want to play inflated prices to pay for, say, Barry Zito? Or do you want a smartly constructed $100 million payroll? "Mo" was terrific in the offseason, moving Rolen for Glaus and signing Lohse as a free agent. Clement didn't work out so well, but that wasn't much dough.
kdunlap: thanks for taking the time to do these chats.
1. Do you know how ticket sales are going for the upcoming season?
2. Will Steven Jackson be in camp before the end of pre-season? (sorry if this is 100th question no this subject)
Jeff Gordon: The Rams still have tickets to move, as you noticed with all the TV ads. That will convince the team to get the Jackson deal done.
Lawrence Houston: Hey Gordo,
First reports indicate we drafted well and we will have some good depth on both sides of the ball -maybe even some suprise starters. What is your take?
Thanks,
VermontRamsFan.
Jeff Gordon: One concern: Greco isn't able to push Barron at right tackle. He appears better at guard, where the team already has depth. But Long is a stud, Burton is strong, the LBs are surprisingly good . . . a nice draft, as of now.
Reading Ram: Gordo,
During the off season I was hoping stringly that we would pick up Alen Faneca, now I know we made a bid for him and lost but we picked up Jacob Bell. Once we picked up Bell much of what I heard about him was that, while not Alen Faneca that he was a force and he was very mobile and a great blocker. I am hearing some talk from folks that have gone to camp that he is getting beat by the likes of Hall and Ryan as well as not really making a positive impression. It is hard to seperate fact from fiction here so from what you have seen and heard where does Bell stack up? I was hoping strongly that the Pace - Bell - Incognito(who I think will win Center) would be a force run blockign on the left side. I am beginning to lose that hope......
Jeff Gordon: I'll be able to answer that better next Monday, when we'll do the live chat from the training camp site.
Dan Gates: Gordo,
I'm a long time LA fan.
I'm still most concerned with the Jackson holdout. Any ideas on when the two sides will meet again and talk. I know the Rams said they will not talk until Jackson get reports to training camp. I remember what happened last year when Jackson was barely used in the preseason and then he fumbled twice on openning day when he finally got hit for real.
I hope Linehan learns from his mistakes and plays the starters more in the preseason. Any word on his playing time schedule?
How's Donnie Avery hip?
Jeff Gordon: Look for the starters to play more, yes, if they are healthy. Also, this time against the Titans will be productive as well. The front of the schedule is brutal and there will be no backing into it.
Jeffrey Edelman: Jeff, I'm sure you read Rick Hummel's notes in the Post on Sunday (8/3/08) where he comments on the remaining games the contenders have against the Braves and Nats. Expanding on that, how do you think the Cards schedule stacks up in terms of difficulty against the rest of the wild-carders (i.e. all League teams except for the Cubs)?
Jeff Gordon: It's a tough schedule. For instance, catching LA with Manny Ramirez is worse than catching the Dodgers earlier. Then they go to Chicago and catch the Cubs on a roll. From there, it is a VERY challenging road.
Dan Gates: Gordo,
Dan Kieder update? If he's healthy, I think the Rams have a great lead blocker.
The Rams really missed Madison Hedgcock last year. I still don't get why we let him go. Obviously the Giants found a diamond in the rough and locked him up with a long term contract.
How's Kieder looking? Jackson needs that solid lead blocking to be effective. I just don't think Owens or Leonard have the blocking ability to get it done at this level.
Jeff Gordon: Our guys are giving good early reports on him. If he holds up, he will be a big addition.
redbirdswin: Gordo,
First off, I enjoyed your latest article about fans enduring the growing pains the Cardinals are going through - thanks for shining some positive light on the future after two losses that easily could have gone our way.
Speaking of the future - what's the latest on Colby Rasmus' recovery? Will he make an appearance in September or will he make his debut in 2009?
Jeff Gordon: If he can get some time in at Memphis after healing -- and if he hits - then he could make big league debut. It's time!
Hang Time: Hasn't Zygmunt's "show up or shut up" approach to coming up with a contract offer that's acceptable to Jackson made the situation worse? Isn't Zyggy running the risk of alienating THE FRANCHISE (Jackson) by taking this hard line low balling stance? Is Zygmunt once again proving that he should be the poster boy for the Peter Principle---being someone who has more responsibility and a job than his skills and competency can handle? Jackson will sit all through pre-season in all likelihood until Zyggy and others see the obvious: Saunders' new offense will be crippled by the absence of SJ or the presence of a half-hearted and bitter superstar? Isn't Zyggy really making matters worse? Who in the organization can force arrogant Zyggy to try an approach with Jackson that's more effective?
Jeff Gordon: Jay is just being Jay. It's how he keeps agents in line. But he knows what is at stake. He has to get that deal done.
slapperloon: Hey Gordo,
A quick question/comment regarding the Blues. The Blues, like many other NHL teams, have failed to get full value from recent free agent signings (McKee and Kariya come to mind), so I can see why they're not making a big free agent splash this off-season. But still, I'm concerned about their forward corps for the upcoming season. With the current roster, I think they're counting a little too much on young players like Perron, Oshie and Berglund to make an immediate impact and counting way too much on players like McClement, Stempniak and Kariya to regain their previous form.
Do you agree? If so, what do you think they should do about it?
Jeff Gordon: Your assessment about free agency is right. But I think Perron and Stempniak, in particular, can do a lot more.
Vince B.: Gordo,
Has there been any talk about extending Ludwick to a Molina/Wainwright type contract? Is signing Furcal in the off-season realistic? Ludwick is the real deal and the Cards need a bat at SS. Thanks for taking my questions.
Jeff Gordon: I would think Ryan would be easily extended, although that will eat a chunk of the $30-plus million that's there to spend. Ankiel will also be costly. I like Furcal, but I worry about dollars and durability. An impact bat at SS would be the ideal addition, though.
umslbirdie: Hi from Los Angeles Mr. Gordon
I just found out (thanks to babych10) on the stl tobay blues forum that TJ Oshie is Henry Boucha's cousin. What a talented, tough and colorful player to be related to... Both are members of the Ojibway tribe ...Boucha was on his way to an all-star NHL career when a stick fight blurred his vision an ended his career. Will Oshie be as exciting a player as his cousin?
Thanks
UMSLBIRDIE-(I graduate online this December)
Jeff Gordon: I didn't know that. But Oshie draws Roenick comparisons and the Blues could definitely use a hard-hitting, hard-skating scorer. This kid will be a fan pleaser.
Pat: Hey gordo!
You will obviously get lots of comments on the trade deadline. Like most others I was disappointed by the lack of movement, since this current group is good but also has some obvious holes.
so rumors or speculation... what is the probability that we actually try to plug some of the holes at the waiver deadline?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will take a long look at any veteran reliever who hits the waiver wire. But will anybody good come free?
Chris in Ohio: Hey Gordo!
What's going on with Lito Sheppard these days? I would give up next years second round pick for him. How about you? Do you see any worthwhile pickups coming up on the waiver wire due to cap space?
Jeff Gordon: Everybody has their cap settled now, but teams may whack veterans to clear spots for kids. The Rams will keep an eye peeled for safeties, for sure. Not sure about cornerback.
Terry: Is there a stat that incorporates lob and if so, what is it and how does Albert compare to his peers? If there isn't, wouldn't rbis/(ribis + lob) be more meaningful than av or rbis?
Jeff Gordon: I'm not away of such a stat, but it's a good idea. I always look at batting average in all the RBI scenarios as a key indicator. Albert has slipped there.
Chris: I saw that the Kings are giving away the new jerseys to season ticket holders. Any such luck here?
Jeff Gordon: Not sure, but maybe Blues management will see this and get the idea.
Rob: Long time no see..
Is Antonio Pittman potentially a better starting RB than Brian Leonard? If so, does that mean Leonard was a bad pick in the 2nd round? If not, why is Pittman working more with the starters at RB than Leonard? What is Leonard missing in terms of being a starting RB?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Brian has settled into a third-down role. He can play some RB and some FB, catch passes, pass blocker -- a pretty handy guy. Was he picked too high? Perhaps.
Travis: Gordo, thanks for the chat. What do you expect out of Blues rookies TJ Oshie and Patrick Berglund? How many points out of the two? Will either one get enough ice time do be a Rookie of the Year contender? How do the Blues view Ben Bishop? Is he the starting goalie of the future or more of a backup type?
Jeff Gordon: Bishop is projected to be the starting goaltender of the future. He has the tools to be that guy, as long as he makes the adjustment to this level. He is a great athlete.
As Oshie and Berglund, both will get every chance to earn scoring-line roles. Not sure about rookie of the year honors, though; Stamkos at Tampa Bay looks like a good early bet.
Fearsome: Gordo -
Is Becht's hamstring injury more serious than the team is letting on? Hamstring injuries can linger all season, and he hasn't practiced in a week.
Jeff Gordon: You're right, those injuries can linger. And that field turf they are practicing on in Wisconsin is hard on the legs.
JARED: how has eric bassey performed at safety this training camp?
also, anything on steven's contract?
Jeff Gordon: My guys say that as a safety, Bassey is a great special teams player.
David: Jeff - A story on CNNSI.com today says Theo Epstein offered Manny Ramirez to all teams - including paying his full salary for the year - but only three teams (Marlins, Dodgers & Phillies) showed any interest. Why on earth wouldn't Mo jump in on that action? Does he think anyone on this team NOT named Pujols is a better offensive force than Manny? Manny batting fourth behind Pujols (WOW!!!) for two months would help the bullpen as their wouldn't be as many 6-5 or 2-1 games, right? God forbid we get any players on this team that has some baggage like Manny - all the Cards players are upstanding, don't do anything wrong (i.e., steroids, etc) type players, right?
Jeff Gordon: With Ludwick, Ankiel, Rasmus, Mather, Schumaker, Barton, et al in the outfield, this is not the place to spend time and money. As for TLR and Manny working together . . . yikes!
Torre is a good fit. He will coax the best out of Manny for at least the rest of the year.
kranhour: If all teams are valuing their minor league prospects at a premium, will the future of trades trend towards swaps of higher profile prospects that fill team needs as opposed to trading high profile prospects for big money rent-a-players? While it's nice to have the proven commodity isn't it also nice to have a "can't miss" prospect that would be under team control for 6 years at a reduced rate thus allowing the club to allocate dollars towards premium pitching? Thanks for taking the time to answer.
Jeff Gordon: A lot of teams are looking at the market just as the Cards are -- develop your own players, especially your pitchers, because it is way most cost-efficient. Strength in numbers! Gambling large dollars on a single hurler makes less and less sense.
Lawarence Marmie: Is there any truth to the rumor that last season- in anticipation of playing the Rams this year- a Patriot's videotape assistant was sent to illegally tape the Rams games and practices, but had his work thrown out by Bill Belichek because the coach thought the man had mistakenly filmed a St. Louis Pop Warner team by accident?
Jeff Gordon: Rim shot!
Glenn: Hey Jeff, I know you're probably going to get asked this questions a million times but, have you heard any news on Steven Jackson? What about any interest in John Lynch? Thanks....
Jeff Gordon: The Rams could use a young John Lynch. A Lynch at the end . . . not so much.
Rob: What's your take on Quentin Culbertson's 2nd camp? It's one thing to raise eyebrows as an undrafted free agent, but since he's been talked about as a potential starter at strongside linebacker, I've been hearing little about him and more about the two 7th round rookie LBs.
Is he going to beat out Chris Draft? If not, why not, and if so, why can't Chris Draft win a starting spot anywhere he goes?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: As reported elsewhere on this site, Culberson is doing great. He was a productive college player. He tackled people. So that means more than pure speed or vertical leap.
Rob: What's your prediction on...
Will Steven Jackons report to camp by Aug. 8? and....
Will he have a new long-term contract when he does?
Jeff Gordon: I can't predict a date, but I fully expect Jackson to sign a long-term deal.
Kevin: Jeff,
Since the Cards are fading could we hope for the Cards to do a waiver deal and off load Izzy for a prospect? The Indians want a closer...perhaps Izzy for Barton?
Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: This team needs all the relievers it can hoard, so Izzy stays. Barton will be back when he rehab stint is up, since Duncan's demise creates a roster hole. It's not like Stavinoha is keeping him from coming back.
zimmy: Desperate for some Blues news... Hinote getting married to a playmate and the release of a third jersey have been the most news out of Blues-land for the last couple weeks.
Any interesting news come across your desk? There are still some intriguing veteran free agents( Shanny, Sakic, i think) still available, short term , not too expensive...
Also a couple teams have cap issues potential trades there ?
anything??
Jeff Gordon: Shanny will go back to New York, I think, if Sundin doesn't go there. But it's a thought. Sakic may wait until September to decide his future.
Joe: Jeff,
Can you give me your opinion on what defensive players in camp are impressing the Rams coaching staff? And, more specifically which DT's do you think will make the Rams final roster? Thanks for your time!
Jeff Gordon: With Wroten's demise, the DT competition isn't all that fierce. I'd like to see Adeyanju play some inside to spell Ryan and Carriker on run downs. Otherwise . . .
Ryan: So, I know the Blues are going with a youth movement, and I'm a huge believer in the cause. However, I also think the powerplay is atrocious. With a guy like Glen Murray a free agent, it would seem beneficial on many levels for the Blues to target him. Yes, he only had 17 goals last year, but he's a proven powerplay producer who might up his goal total playing with a Paul Kariya or Andy McDonald. Also, he would provide more veteran leadership that the Blues crave. Any chance the Blues go after him? They could land him for a reasonable price after his low production of last year. What do think? What have you heard?
Thanks, Gordo.
Jeff Gordon: One more shooter, at the right price, would be worth a look. Murray doesn't want rookies to get top jobs by default and the organizational depth up front is lacking. So a Murray or a Parrish-type would be worth bringing in.
Ron McAdams: What are the chances of Chris Draft starting at SLB?
Jeff Gordon: Interesting question. Culberson is getting a chance to shine now. And Draft's versatility may work against him starting here, since Haslett could move him around.
Dan M.: Hey Gordo,
Are there any rumblings of the Cardinals locking up players like Ludwick, Ankiel, or Glaus to long term contracts before they are too expensive to resign as free agents? It seems to be a trend for teams to sign their talent before the price tags on them explode. (See: Longoria/Tampa, Braun/Milwaukee, Wright/Mets)
Jeff Gordon: Ryan and Rick are good targets for 4- to 5-year deals. Glaus is another matter, since the team has possible replacements on the horizon. The team has to extend Albert at some point -- for more than $20 million per year or more -- so something has to give.
Arturo: Hey
I asked a Question earlier , stating Dunc and Barton could be gone next year. I didn't mean to imply we don't have control of their rights , simply with Lud, Ank and the great Rasmus on the way , plus Shu and Mather for the bench , the outfield looks a little crowded.
Jeff Gordon: Right -- and I think the four guys here now, plus Ramus, would be the ideal OF for next year. Duncan could need a long rehab stint in Memphis, if he can even play. So he is out of the picture. That would Barton at No. 6, unless somebody else is dealt. And Jon Jay and Daryl Jones could be similar type players real soon.
David: Gordo,
In reading all the training camp blogs, Jacob Bell is seldom mentioned. It appears he's got the starting LG position, but has he been turning heads?
Jeff Gordon: I haven't heard much from my spies. I'll have a better idea next week, when we do this chat from camp.
knighad: Gordo,
Thanks for all your hard work. I really enjoy your insightful columns. Do you have any insight into why the Cardinals have played much better on the road and struggled at home recently? Even Mr. Pujols has not performed well at Busch. I saw the team in Atlanta last week and they looked relaxed, but watching the game last night on ESPN they seemed more tense. The Cardinals should have a big home field advantage. Do you feel that they will stay in the Wild Card chase until the end or will we see a return to the postseason next year?
Jeff Gordon: The home-field issue is a real mystery. Just hitting last is a huge advantage, unless Lidge is pitching. If I knew why this was happening, I'd tell Tony and become his new best friend. As for the playoffs, I don't see it this year. The pitching staff is wearing out.
Scott Linehan: Can a coach ever have enough tight ends?
P.S.
Is the 1 yd quick hitch the greatest offensive play ever created or what?
Jeff Gordon: No, it is not the best play ever.
ibleedblue1968@yahoo.com: Hey Gordo!
With the number of quality outfielders the Cardinals have, what's the possibility that a guy like Mather would be moved into a third base role? He seems to be developing into the type of offensive-type player for a third baseman. They need to do something to free up space in the outfield. Too many guys that are MLB-level. Any thoughts on this are appreciated.
Jeff Gordon: If he could play a steady third base, that would really help the franchise long term. That would allow the team to apply Glaus' money elsewhere over the long term.
David: Gordo,
I'm always curious about Alex Barron. I've gained the impression his motivation isn't on the level of a Carricker or a Long. Is he having a good training camp? Are his skills living up to the hype surrounding his draft? I won't ask about the false starts. And I don't really care about his attitude--I just wonder if there is legitimate hope of this guy becoming top shelf, or will the Rams need to dump him when his contract runs out?
Jeff Gordon: Alex said all the right stuff in the offseason and there is a lot of money on the table for him IF he realizes his potential this year. But let's see when the real games begin.
adam_cruts: Jeff,
Thanks as always. I have to ask - why in the world is Josh Phelps not getting an opportunity to bat off the bench for the Cardinals? I can understand us not having the opening at 1B, but wouldn't it have been nice to have an experienced power bat off the bench against a Lidge last night in the 9th, rather than sending currently undermatched Mather/Stavinoha up there?
Jeff Gordon: Right now the Cards need an OF on the bench. But Phelps could have more value than an extra middle infielder, since he can also catch a little. And his power would be a welcome bench addition.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Where can I find a training camp fan schedule? Since it's just down the road, I'd like to make it over there for one of the bigger events.
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are headed to Tennessee to practice, so your best bet is to catch them when they return at the start of the next week.
Dan M.: Gordo,
Doesn't Marc Bulger have a problem with his touch on deep balls? If he is not able to accurately put the ball in the hands of these receivers down field, what difference does it make how much vertical speed they have? Until Bulger proves that he can go long, I don't see DBs biting deep and allowing the short passes to turn into big YAC plays.
Jeff Gordon: He doesn't have a real long arm, period. His key to throw accurately and hit guys in their break, headed upfield. Heaving the home-run ball over the top of the secondary isn't his strong suit.
Ken Wilson: Hey Gordo,
This summer seems to have shown a major philosphy difference between somewhere between Dewitt and LaRussa. Dewitt appears to be wanting to keep cost reasonable while LaRussa needs more bats and arms. Watching Mather and Stavinoha was painful. Everyone agrees that TLR is a sure bet HOFer. However, deep down I'm wondering if based on the direction upper management appears to want to go towards, IYO do you think upper management still believes that TLR is the best man to guide the Cardinals now and going forward?
Jeff Gordon: La Russa has developed Ankiel, Ludwick, Schumaker, Ryan and McClellan. So he is the right guy to do the same with Rasmus, Perez, Garcia, et al. Injuries to Duncan, Rasmus and Barton put Stavinoha in pretty deep Sunday, but this isn't a sign that the youth movement will fail.
Michael Martz: Don't you think that Larry Marmie got a raw deal as defensive coordinator of the Rams? I mean, Jim Haslett hasn't done much better and his name is thrown around for head coaching vacancies all the time- while Larry was chased out of town like the villagers chased Frankenstein's monster into that windmill... I thought I even saw some carrying torches. Do you know if Marmie is receptive to the idea of moving to the Bay area...San Francisco specifically?
Jeff Gordon: Marmie's problem was taking Lovie's aggressive scheme and getting passive with. Haslett's issue last year was personnel, not scheme. With no outside pass rush, smallish LBs and injured CBs, there wasn't much hope.
virginiatom: Your comments on Avery falling behind fast and possibly not being able to break the top 4 wide receivers except on big plays is worrisome for the 33rd pick overall in the draft, and the first wide receiver taken. Did they expect more or is this normal development for a young receiver. I hope this is not the reincarnation of Trung Candidate.
Jeff Gordon: It's just that Donnie had the most to learn, coming from a spread college offense that didn't stress route running. Speed is still speed, so he'll have a role once he's healthy. But other guys are making good cases for themselves, including most of the holdovers from last year. Al Saunders is having that impact.
Patrick Berglund: Please tell Mr. Murray to play me a lot this year! I will score many goals and points....
Jeff Gordon: Don't worry, big guy. The team has no depth at center. You will have to play.
WDMay35: They do well with the bases empty or with perhaps one man on but with the bases loaded we are lucky to get a sacrifice fly or a score on a double play. There are so many times that just a single would do the job.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards seem to score in bunches. The hitters do need to become more consistent down the stretch.
Jonathan Gammel: Is there a chance that the Rams will keep 7 WR's on the team instead of 6? Also, will the Rams trade Medlock or just release him?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see 7 WRs, since there is no way to make the active roster work.
Glenn: Who's standing out more Berlin or Gradkowski?
Jeff Gordon: Bruce had a strong scrimmage and his experience has to be a big factor. But we'll see both take their shot in preseason games -- and that will be the indicator.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
I am going to you as my insider versus trusting everything that comes from the front office.
I agree with you that spending money where we are already strong (OF) would be a disaster. That being said, I see 4 GLARING holes. A starter, shortstop, closer and second baseman in that order. I am willing to fill the relief and second base help from within. What are two realistic moves/acquisitions you see this team ACTUALLY making this offseason?
Jeff Gordon: My order: Closer, keep Lohse, add a shortstop bat. If the Cards fail at No. 3, put Ryan there. Why not? Second base I'm OK, given the batting averages. I'd overpay for one guy in the offseason: Fuentes.
adam_cruts: Jeff,
I posed a question earlier about why isn't Phelps up with the big club; however I can understand there's no real place in the field for him. But with that said, is there not a team in the majors that would be interested in his current .280 25HR 80 RBI line in AAA right now for some LHP help? Is he considered one of the many "2009!!!" hopefuls that we keep hearing about? I'm confused what his purpose is if we can't pawn him off for the right deal to help the big club. Obviously our 1B position is taken with the Cards.
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: If another team wanted Phelps, I assume we would have heard so. There are a lot of young hitters breaking in and Phelps is now just a bench guy. That said, I'd rather have his power on the bench than an extra middle infielder. Phelps HR/AB numbers in the bigs are pretty good. As for '09, he would need some assurances to playing time to re-sign here. Let's see if he gets a chance in September to earn that time.
redbirdswin: Who are the best bets for September callups - Rasmus (if healthy), Barton, Perez, Motte, Phelps, Flores, Anderson, Jimenez . . . anyone else stand out in your mind?
Jeff Gordon: Barton will return before then. Otherwise, Phelps, Rasmus, Motte, Perez, Flores, Boggs and Anderson would all make sense. It would be nice to see Freese, too, but it would be hard to get him at bats.
That's it for this week. See you next week from Wisconsin.
