Anthony: Gordo'
TLR says Perez can't be the closer until he proves he can pitch . . . How about until Izzy and Franklin prove they CAN'T pitch? Because, in case he hasn't noticed, that happened a couple of months ago. Nothing against Franklin, he's a nice role pitcher but his role should not be closer. And Izzy . . . he's done.
How can TLR keep fiddling while the Cards burn? If he's still stewing about not getting anything by the trade deadline, he needs to get over it and find something that works.
Jeff Gordon: Given Carpenter's triceps strain, the Wainwright-to-the-closer role may not happen. Adam may be needed for the rotation, which could keep Perez in the closer mix. Chris got beat up during his last stint with the Cards, once hitters got a read on him. His stats deteriorated before he went back to Memphis. As good as he looked while earning his first career save, you have to be mindful of that.
Bronco: Jeff, I am a transplanted Cardinal Fan, lived in St.Louis for 36 years and have been a Cardinal Fan for as long as I can remember. The last 8 years away from STL and missing the games has been tough. Thank God for Direct TV and being able to see most of the games. 2006 was special and Jim Edmonds was a huge part of why the Cards won in 06. I have been a big fan of his since he came to STL and even understood why he had to try to distance himself from the Cards this year while playing for the hated Cubs what with all the media in Chicago. However after today I am not so much a Jim Edmonds fan anymore!! The first home run, flipping his bat at the Cards dugout and staring into the dugout just isn't cool but one can almost forgive that as he and Don Tony don't always get along. However for Jim to say to a couple of broadcasters who have done nothing to him and even defended him on occasion that he is DONE WITH STL TV AND RADIO AND DONE WITH THE CARDINALS is not something that the fans or community should ever forget he said. Brett Favre's leaving from Green Bay was much harsher than Edmonds from STL and Favre in front of the all that Media said he would always be a PACKER forever but he was a Jet now and was going to try to help them win. Edmonds needs to learn that you don't have to burn your relationship with the Fans just because you are MAD at the Mangaer or Coach. Well I say since He is done with STL then it is time for STL to be done with him,to h_ _ _ with Jim Edmonds, he wants to be a Cub so bad and thinks that they are the greatest!!! fine so be it. Dont CHEER him when he comes back but more importantly DON'T BOO him when he comes back, that will only tell him we still care. IGNORE him when he comes back and it will drive him nuts, JE loves the spotlight and attention, he craves it, Deny him it and he will be lost. Oh and his restaurant can't be that good can it? sorry to be so negative but it just irritated me to no end to hear that he said he was done with STL and being a Cardinal.
So to Jim Edmonds I would say enjoy the rest of the year in Chicago and have your fun because you destroyed your relationship with STL for 3/4 of a season in Chicago and when next year you aren't there anymore what will you do then? Don't come crawling back to STL for you are done with STL.
Jeff Gordon: Well, Jimmy Ballgame can be a bit overwrought with everything he does -- catching fly balls, striking out, hitting homers and, yes, dealing with his current or former bosses. That is just Jimmy being Jimmy. It's great theater. But Cards fans should remember that he is just going over the top to be a Cub, just as he over the top with everything else he does.
Rob: Gordo,
Jim Edmonds and Brett Favre how different can two men who were beloved by their fans be?
Brett Favre leaving Green Bay and going to the Jets had to be a very tough thing for Brett to do and hard on the fans of GB. It was about as ugly and nasty a divorce as there could be between an organization and their best player but at least Brett let the GB fans know that he still loved them and would miss them saying that he was still a Green Bay Packer and always would be. I am sure that while not soothing the pain for the fans it made them feel a little better.
Jim Edmonds needs to learn some of this from Brett, Edmonds day today VS the Cards in Chicago was ridiculous, flipping his bat and scowling into the dugout, ok I can understand that, that is just Edmonds being the showboat that he is and telling Tony to stick it. What I have a problem with is the I am done with the media in St.Louis and done being a Cardinal..WHAT? Hey Jimmy being a Cardinal made you what you are today, you came into your own as a Cardinal, became a huge star here, the fans loved you and so did the city. Before you came here yes you were known for great catches but also known to be hurt all the time and an underperformer. You came to St.Louis and we embraced you, your style and your ego. We defended your showboating and even aplauded it and I was still doing that even with you being a CUB because YOU WERE A CARDINAL, a great Cardinal and always would be.
Well thanks for straightening me out JIM, thanks for telling me I was wrong, thanks for setting the record straight and thanks for no class at all, but mostly, thanks for letting me go back to just hating the CUBS completely and not feeling guilty about rooting for a CUB. Good luck to you JIM in your 1/2 season as a CUB,I hope that 1/2 season with them was worth blowing 8 with us. The funny thing is Jim, next year you probably won't even be a CUB and then what will you be left with? Certianly not a realtionship with the fans of the Cardinals as Bob, Stan,Ozzie and many others have. JIM, unlike Brett Favre YOU are a TRAITOR for in your own words you are done being a Cardinal, you are a CUB now and we are done with you!!
Jeff Gordon: Come, he's not a traitor. The Cards got rid of him. He didn't leave. So why wouldn't he want to come back at them a little bit? Most players would have played this more smartly, but Jimmy Ballgame has a knack for ruffling feathers. This is a guy who so irritated the Padres this spring that they couldn't wait to get rid of him -- even though they needed him desperately.
WIRAMFAN: Well it's just one pre-season game and the Rams under Linehan are already in mid-season form! No inside defense, no offensive threats, Berlin looks to be the best but he'll probably get let go. Wow does anyone really think this guy can turn this team around? Honestly. Linehan is soooo far out of his league!! And Steven Jackson is just the first Rat to jump from this sinking ship!
Jeff Gordon: IF Berlin plays like that, he'll win the No. 3 job. Linehan is comfortable with him. As for the rest of the performance -- yikes! At least the kicking game was good.
drelboc: Hey Gordo;
Looking at the Brewers August schedule compared to the Cards, it appears the Brew Crew have a great opportunity to make a big move in the standings for that wild card if not the NL CENTRAL itself given the Cubs tough September schedule. If the Cards injured peices can come back and be good, do you think they can over come the odds (that the schedule seems to favor) and get into the big dance in October?
Jeff, I am always very grateful to get your feedback. THANK YOU!
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will need to make a big, big push to stay alive. And if Carpenter really IS hurt, I don't know where that push will come from. Maybe Ankiel's return could help. The Cards will benefit more than most teams from the September call-up, since they have about eight guys in Memphis right now capable of helping. But it is tough to be optimistic with how this is trending.
Harold: Just a few quick questions-
1) I don't get why people think the Cubs are such a great team, think of it this way if the Cardinals had a good closer for 2008 (and im a big IZZY FAN it's sad to see him have a horrible 2008) and you cut half those blown saves we have, the Cardinals would be in 1st place and the Cubs in the wild card chase. So please tell me why people think the cubs seem to be so good?
2) I just came across and saw the Edgar Renteria has over 2000 hits, do you think that he has a shot for the Hall Of Fame? He's a free agent after this year any chance we can get him?
3) Are there any players on the waivers that you see that can help the Cardinals or do you think we should stay right where we are? (Brian Giles)
4) For the 2009 season what players in the free agent class do you think the Cardinals should go after? It's really tough to say what we need help in the only thing that comes to mind is Relief Pitching?.
Thanks and keep up the good work- I always enjoy reading your stuff !
Jeff Gordon: The Cubs are really good. They have a killer lineup and their young bullpen arms are protection against Wood's issues. The Cards would be right there without the blown saves, but Chicago was going to win a lot of games either way.
Edgar isn't a Hall of Famer. He needs 3000 hits for that. The Cards could get him for next year before Detroit believes he has really slipped.
There are players on waivers, like Washburn and Giles. But Giles didn't want to leave LA and other teams are after Washburn. And that guy may not be better than the available options.
As for next year, Fuentes would have to top the list. He could close here. Cabrera would be nice at SS, if the dollars don't get crazy.
Harold: For Mark McGwire 70th homerun in 1998 and seeing how this is 2008 are the St. Louis Cardinals going to do something for the 10th anniversary of it ? And do you think this is his year to be picked for the HALL and what about Billy Southworth will the Cardinals put him on the Hall Of Fame wall in the left field he was a big part for the Cardinals history ----- 2 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIPS ----
Jeff Gordon: Nice thought for Billy, but there isn't much current sentiment for that, I'm afraid. Celebrating Big Mac's feat would be nice, but the Hall of Fame isn't going to happen for him. The steroid stain is too great, for him and for sluggers like him.
Frank: Gordo,
Is Ankiel a free agent at the end of this year ? If so do you think he will resign with the Cardinals ? I see his value and Ludwicks very complicated figure out.
Jeff Gordon: Rick has another year before that, but the Cards need to lock each guy into a long-term deal. Both will have a 1 1/2-year track record to go on. That's not ideal, but it is clear both players have real value and securing them for, say, four years each would be smart.
virginiatom: I know its only one pre-season game, but the Rams first and second team defense against Tennessee looked like the Rams of the last two years of Jim Hasletts reign, missing tackles and unable to stop the run. Its basic defense, yet the Rams just don't seem capable of getting it done. Please tell me it will be better. As a hardcore fan, another year of a twenty-something ranked defense is extremely dissappointing.
Jeff Gordon: Numbers don't lie -- the Rams missed tackles all over the field. Sometimes guys got overpowered and sometimes they just missed assignments or lacked discipline. Either way, the result was shocking.
Buk: Does Albert have a shot at MVP?
Jeff Gordon: With a huge finish, he could get in that discussion. Voters realize that his presence makes what Ludwick and Ankiel are doing possible, But the Cards would have to stay in the hunt all the way for that to happen.
Tackleberry: Is LaRussa becoming the Lloyd Carr of the Cards/Cubs rivalry? He obviously owned the Cubs for a long time, but these past couple/few years he can't seem to get his team to where they need to be for these games. I just always feel like the Cubs want it more. Maybe that is because they have a more emotional group of players, but while the Cards are grinders they seem to be missing that "big game/series" grit.
Jeff Gordon: The Cubs are just better, especially at home. They played two terrific games in this series. Lou Piniella is a fabulous manager. Tip your cap to them. But Tony has kept the Cards ahead of the Cubs for most of his tenure here.
Tackleberry: It feels like the Cards line-up could use a re-focus session on what are and are not good pitches to swing at. Pujols has been the essence of the word "pressing" lately and a three-pitch package of breaking ball in the dirt, breaking ball in the dirt, breaking ball in the dirt should probably take care of Ludwick, Ankiel, and most of the other young hitters on this team.
The biggest question I have is what will the Cards do in the off-season to address the obvious deficiency against left-handers? It is almost like they walk into match-ups defeated against even a decent lefty.
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus is another lefty hitter, so he can't change that. This team could use another RH stick, preferably at shortstop. Mather could develop as a good platoon threat against lefties. Also, more RH power at 2B would help. These definitely are things to look at.
Rich: Hey Gordo,
After the debacle in Nashville, do you see the Rams scanning the waiver wire for veteran defenders - particularly LBs?
I realize part of the point of pre-season is getting young players reps in game situations and when you line up multiple rookies there are going to be days like last Saturday.
However, aside from Draft the Rams LB corp is devoid of steady veterans with more than 3 years in the league and the Rams secondary isn't much better in that regard.
Thanks for hosting these chats.
Rich
Jeff Gordon: Chamberlain made a couple of plays, but, no, the LBs did not have a great day. I believe waiver help there or at safety are possibilities unless the defense enjoys a dramatic turnaround during the next two weeks.
virginiatom: When you look at the Rams roster over the past 5 years, it clearly contains good players, but no impact, game changing, pro bowl caliber type players. Even Steven Jackson has really only had one impact year in all his time here, and this year is not starting out well for him. In addition, Jackson loses too many yards down around the goal line to be a true impact running back in the mode that say an Emitt Smith was. First and goal at the 3, and Emitt would score, which is not the same for Jackson. Do you see any sure fire pro-bowlers or game changing impact players emerging for the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: A big piece of that red zone issue is the O-line. The Rams want to build a power-blocking front wall, but we didn't see it last year because of injuries. The team needs Barron to be one of those impact guys you want. And Incognito. And Bell, the FA pick-up (hopefully) at the take-off point of his career.
Hen: Hi Gordo,
Realizing that it was the first preseason game, is there anything that you can take out of this game that was good to build upon?
Looks to me the same offensive (not crisp) and defensive (not stopping the run) "issues" have continued from last year. Do you see that getting fixed?
I keep reading and did last year as well that it wasn't the other team that beat us it was that we weren't in our run fits and gaps. How difficult is that to accomplish? Wow.
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, great point about missed assignments. At some point failure must be attributed to simply not being good enough. At some point, Haslett has to admit his guys got the butts kicked. Saturday night was an example of that. Rams fans should be worried about that, because a lot of that defensive depth is unproven and almost all of it got abused by the Titans.
davebird32: Gordo is it me are has ever since Bulger got all that money last year before the start of camp he has been scared and playing horrible? It is almost like he has all this money now and is too worried about getting hurt. Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: The money isn't the problem. Repetitive beatings is the problem.
Chaz: Jeff,
Last week you said that you would overpay for Fuentes, do you think that the Cards will try to overhaul the bullpen by pulling a Baltimore by overspending on bullpen help or shall they promote from the minors? Also, with a loaded outfield for next year, what is the possiility of getting a Michael Young or Ian Kinsler from Texas in would be a pretty big trade?
Ps.
The live chats help with Mondays at work,
thank you
Jeff Gordon: Young has a restrictive contract. He would want to leave Texas for that to happen, because he has trade protections. Kinsler would be a perfect fit too, but not easily acquired. It would take elite young pitching, I would presume, and the Cards will need to hoard pitching. The latest Carpenter setback and the Mulder/Clement failures underscore that.
Austin: With Carp going down with a injury that doesnt look to serious, does MO start to think that we cold use a SP from the Wavier Deadline to have some kind of fallback incase Carp is out longer, or we cold use a lefty reliever too, who do you think we will target if anyone during the Waiver Deadline.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will look at anybody who comes free on a salary dump, since money isn't the issue here. Trading prospects is the issue. But as the Cards saw with Livan Hernandez, teams with lesser records get first shot to put in claims. A guy like Washburn is drawing interest from teams like Chicago, so Seattle could be in position to get something for him.
Jim W.: Say Gordo, with Dick Vermeil visiting the Rams, any chance ownership could just quietly remove Linehan and insert Vermeil in his place? I think the intensity of training camp would ratchet up a notch or two.
Seriously though, what's it going to take for Haslett to change his "defensive strategy" to stop the bleeding with the opposition's running attack? We've been bad at stopping the run in Haslett's entire tenure here. Maybe it won't be fixed until the entire coaching staff is gone.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams can only hope that Dick can fire up the troops this week. They need it. And what happened to the Rams defense defies easy explanation. This will be a big week of practice for Haslett and his players. They looked demoralized in Tennessee.
Kevin in NJ: Hey Gordo,
2 questions. First, after watching the Defense get totally embarrassed against the run, do you think they made a big mistake by not taking Glen Dorsey?
and do I bother ordering direct TV this year?...lol
Thanks,
Jeff Gordon: The Dorsey/Long comparisons will be fun. Long did little in his pro debut and Dorsey wasted no time suffering a knee injury. As for the Direct TV, there will be lots of entertaining teams to watch. The Rams? We'll see.
Chris: How much so you think the Tenn. game will be a indication of what type of year the Rams are gonna have? I know its just one game but we looked very bad..
Jeff Gordon: The Rams can't possibly be that bad, can they?
Nice job of moving tickets, guys. The marketing department can't be too happy with them.
Arturo: I saw it mentioned in the forum that LA has interest in Mckee. not only because hes a veteran which they have few of on the blue line but also they need extra payroll to hit the cap floor this year. is this true ? have you heard credible sources for this or other rumors?
Jeff Gordon: LA dumped a lot of salary, but I don't know if they HAVE to take on some more dollars before the season. And if the Kings do need that, I'm not sure McKee is a great fit. I think the Buffalo deal (for Afinogenov)makes more sense, since Maxim makes $3.5 million this season and needs a change of scenery. And Buffalo likes McKee and knows he is a better fit in the Eastern Conference.
Arturo: Shanny to NY or STL? or somewhere else?I almost want to see him back in blue , but hes older & will take a roster spot from a youngster if hes here.
Jeff Gordon: He has to wait for the Sundin deal to play out and for a collective bargaining issue to be resolved. Then I believe he will go to the Rangers, unless Mats ends up there.
smallbear: Gordo,
We Cub fans have been catching a lot of flack for ALLEGEDLY "booing" when La Russa trotted out to the mound (accompanied by the trainer) in the middle of Jim Edmonds at bat -----and subsequently claiming that they had noticed something wrong in Carpenter's delivery).
Your fans believe we were booing Carpenter. I contend that that we were booing La Russa for his interruption of the Cubs momentum and Jimmy Baseball's at bat, in what we believed was another La Russa STRATEGEM to get both unlimited warm-ups for a his relief pitcher (whom he had gotten up too late) and in an attempt to interrupt the Cubs momentum at a critical time in the game.
Far be it from us to believe La Russa would pull such a ploy !!!
But having watched our team and fans for the last 50 years----I have never seen them "boo" an injured player----but I have seen them boo "cute managerial ploys" designed to disrupt our momentum and gain additional (UNLIMITED) WARM UP PITCHES by relievers.
Could you please weigh in on this ---- no animousity needs to be generated in our rivalry which until now has always been good natured and friendly. Neither of us needs to create a spirit of hostility which might erupt from such a patently obvious misrepresentation of what occurred last night when Carpenter was lifted from the game. Note, the booing occurred when LaRussa (trainer in tow) emerged from dugout in Jimmy's mid-bat!!!
And I don't recall seeing any obvious indication of pain from Carpenter---
La Russa must have X Ray vision !!! or a wilely Lawyer's knack for stratagems.
No one I know wants any player injured and their livelihood negatively impacted. This is only a game----not a War !!!
smallbear
Jeff Gordon: La Russa came out because he was called out by Molina and Carpenter. Chris was clearly hurt, although fans couldn't pick that up from watching what happened.
But any Cubs fan who believes La Russa was dying to get Ron Villone into the game with unlimited warm-ups -- at the expense of Carpenter for the rest of the game -- is a drooling idiot. TLR would have preferred Carpenter pitch eight innings the way he was going. Had the Cards fielded behind him in this game, he could have kept Chicago off the board.
zimmy: tough losses to the cubs, Carp's arm, Wainos less than perfect rehab, 7 games back... & now on to FLA who are also in the race...
wow im shocked Lopez isn't our savior after all! who knew??!!
sorry had to throw that in...
after a disappointing week is there much of a sliver lining headed into the new week?
Jeff Gordon: Hey, Lopez has helped a bit. But Ankiel's return, Wainwright's progress and Carpenter's injury are the big factors. If all three break the right way, the Cards can hang around some more.
HEG: Gordo the Cards were right on their familiar path this week-end; after scoring big Saturday following with an offensive melt-down the next game. Adam Kennedy has been a complete failure ever since they re-acquired him; O.K. on with the Rams-granted I only watched a small portion of the game and saw more than what I wanted to; basically the same as last year; got torched up the middle on numerous running plays; Bulger looked the same as last year and I believe the Rams would be as good or better with Green as Q.B. I can see the Rams with 3-13 record this year the same as last year & the Cards finishing 3rd in their division and out of the play-offs- what is your take on these comments?
Jeff Gordon: It's early to ditch Bulger for Green, but that was a really discouraging performance by Bulger. He has a new coordinator and a new offense. He has to pick it up. No excuses there. Kennedy has been OK this year, although Sunday night was not his finest hour. If he hits .270 and plays better D than he played Sunday, then he does his part to help.
zimmy: In the blues forums there was a thread about Shanny and Janney & affairs & scandals. As one of the younger readers I remember Janney being around but dont recall the scandal. please enlighten me & and the rest of us on the factual goings on from the scandal & the "forced " trade soon after.
Jeff Gordon: Well, Janney did end up getting divorced and Brendan ended up marrying his ex. But that sort of thing happens in sports. It didn't force Shanny's exit, since Iron Mike had no use for Janney either and later moved him. Shanny and Keenan were at odds and Mike wanted to flex his muscle. He also tried to deal Hull. He also traded just about every player that he inherited.
zimmy: Can TRL resist using Vallone for one game?? he like many others are overtaxed, MO was unable, unwilling to add pitching help & TRL is scrambling to patch together a 'pen that can be halfway respectable. but overuse and lack of reliable arms makes that difficult.
Jeff Gordon: Must be a team rule: Villone pitches every game.
bjsgolf: How can the Rams, with an undersized defense, a gigantic hole at offensive takcle, and no backups at linebacker, spend their last 2 second round draft picks on Brian Leonard and Donnie Avery?
Jeff Gordon: The OT issue is large, since it appears Greco is better at guard and (gulp) Goldberg is the clear No. 3. Yikes! And Avery's injury is a tough blow, since other WRs are doing well in his absence. Stanley has been excelling in his absence. That pick is open to much second-guessing, since he was a bit of a reach in the second round.
MonkeyLooker: I know it was only a couple of series and also the first pre-season game but Mark Bulger was the same QB we had last year - happy feet in the pocket, panicking & throwing way too early several times instead of moving around & letting the play develop, staring down the 1st option & then looking at the rush instead of checking down to his 2d & 3rd options, and absolutely no touch on short passes. Bulger quit last year in the Pittsburgh game and unfortunately I see no improvement. Is it time to start thinking about drafting a QB for the immediate future? I am worried!
GO RAMS!
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the Rams should have already drafted their Quarterback of the Future, since it takes time to develop. Bruce Gradkowski is probably not that guy.
LA-Vegas Rams Fan: Gordo I haven't posted for a while but had to comment, I know it is the first pre season game but I really don't see much change from last year! The defense is too small up front and we are getting blown out on to many plays. Bulger has the deer in the headlights looks still. Looks like another long year.
Jeff Gordon: The kids -- Ryan, Carricker and Long -- will have to pay bigger than that. But I won't write them off after one game.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Even if Carp's injury is a minor strain, it got me to thinking last night. What are we possibly going to see as an '09 rotation? I used to have faith in Wainwright as a 200 IP kind of guy...hopefully he will be. But with Carpenter being a HUGE unknown (although I am incredibly pleased with how he's been pitching), Lohse and Looper heading for free agency, and Wellemeyer and Piniero being Wellemeyer and Piniero, I don't understand how we could POSSIBLY try to glue this rotation again for a THIRD YEAR STRAIGHT. I understand buying pitching is a risky way to win, but teams with lesser payrolls are doing it...I understand we have youth, but they aren't getting a shot. It's time to give Garcia a look! McClellan would be a major bullpen subtraction if we put him in the rotation! Wellemeyer has been OK, but I'll be honest, I would be perefectly happy if he were coming out of the BP next year.
We have been sold that 2009 will be the resurgence of the cards (even though 08 has been pretty nice), with garcia, perez, mcclellan, rasmus, pujols, ankiel, ludwick, carpenter, wainwright and yadier contributing.
How do you see this rotation rounding out? Is there ANY chance we will make a run at Sabathia/Sheets/Lowe/Dempster, or do you see us HOPING the season away that Carp and Wainwright are healthy and productive?
Sorry for the manifesto!
Jeff Gordon: Lowe would be an interesting addition, given his Duncan-approved style of throwing. He gets grounders when he is going well. But I still believe Carpenter, Wainwright (victim of an odd injury, a re-signed Lohse, Wellemeyer and McClellan or Garcia would be a good start. I would spend the money on a guy who already fits in, Lohse. Sheets and Sabathia will chase Zito dollars and that is not where the Cards will go.
Andrew Sampson: Hi Jeff
With TJ Oshie projected as a Calder candidate, how much of an impact you see him having? I'm of the thought He and Patrik are being counted on by Blues management to have an impact this year. Do you think Alex P can make the team?
Jeff Gordon: He is a Calder candidate because the team needs him to have a big impact. He should get PP time and first- or second-line action. But will Murray stick with him? Is he more mature than Perron? We'll see.
Moon Dog: Gordo,
Are the Rams & S. Jackson's agent having any discussions at all about a new contract?
I think he is a good running back with tremendous potential, but I have just not seen the results on the field to show that he is the best back in the NFL, as it appears he wants to be paid the best.
Is there any scenerio that would result in him being traded?
Thank you
Moondog
Jeff Gordon: I don't see him getting traded. As another poster noted, he is one of the team's few true "impact" players. I believe Jackson realizes that the impasse could hurt his career, so I would expect him to make something happen soon.
Ray: Hey Gordo:
I know it always seems we expect the world from Pujols, but I do have one concern. It seems a few years ago Albert would hit balls to right field and right-center with power. Though still hitting the ball that way and getting hits, the power doesn't seem to be there, so other teams seem to consistently pitch him outside these days. Has Albert become overly pull conscious (in a power sense)? Is this a result of his arm issues? Is my memory gone or am I blind?
Jeff Gordon: Teams will keep pitching him away until doomsday, so, yes, he will have to drive more balls into right and right-center to maintain his usual high level of consistency. His power his still there, but perhaps he HAS become too willing to pull the ball.
Richard: Gordo,
After another dismal preseason performance with all of the same problems we've seen for the last few years, it doesn't seem that there is any progress. With 2, more qualified, cooridinators, how long do you think Linehan has until he gets the ax?
Jeff Gordon: Nobody is getting canned because of a preseason game. But this is obviously the make-or-break year for him as a head coach. To get an extension, Linehan will have to take this team a big step forward. This was NOT an encouraging start to that.
Ryan: I heard Manny Legace on "The Drive" last week, and even he sounded a little weary about the Blues' age. When asked about his feelings toward the Blues' rebuilding, Manny said he didn't like it. He thought we were going too young. It can't be a good sign when even your starting goaltender doesn't seem to have faith in the plan. My question, do you agree with Manny's comments? In an effort to rebuild have the Blues overdone it and gone TOO young? I mean, I think it's a pretty safe bet that given the current Central Division and Western Conference, the Blues will be on the outside looking in once again come playoff time, and it'll be because of our age. Your thoughts, Gordo?
Jeff Gordon: The more I look at the division, the more I wonder if the Blues can make enough progress this year. They are putting a lot of Oshie, Berglund and Perron. Two of those three have to become significant scorers. But I really think the key to this season will be getting big bouncebacks from Stempniak, Kariya and McDonald. The latter two could be point-per-game guys and Stempniak needs to score 25.
Ken: The pre-season game no. 1 is just more of the same as 2007. It was mistake to retain Linehan but what does it matter so long as Zygmut and Shaw remain in control.
My question to you: Is there any hope at all? I am dying here and I just see another unbearable year of horrible football.
I hope the RAMS are sold. I will take the unknown rather then stay with present management.
Jeff Gordon: It's early to write off Zygmunt, Shaw and Linehan for good. But this start couldn't have been more discouraging.
PossumBoy9: Do you think not taking Darren McFadden when the opportunity was there for the Rams a mistake?
Jeff Gordon: No, I think Jackson is a great player. The team just has to resolve this contract matter and move on. Obvious the defense needed help.
The GOAT (Greatest of All-Time): Gordo,
Before the Rams game started I thought the Titans would rack up at least 350 yards rushing so 340 was an improvement.
Maybe the Rams defense should wear the new Speedo swimsuit to make them faster on the field, it would definitely help in games played in the rain?
Don't you think it would be cool if Edmonds restaurant had a special everytime Edmonds did something to torch the Cardinals? I also understand in the bathrooms the urinals have LaRussa's picture on them for target practice.
The 4x100 Relay last night, greatest swimming event of all time, ahead of Spitz winning 7 gold metals all world records without a swim cap, goggles or hydro-dynamic suit and only wearing the 1976 bicentennial speedo!
Jeff Gordon: The new suits could make them faster, but what about the whole problem of defenders not being where they are supposed to do?
Steve (Roch. NY): Hey Gordo,
Another year under Linehan and nothing's changed. I watched the replay of the game on NFL Network yesterday and while I wasn't expecting much this year to begin with, now I think the Rams will be lucky if they don't start 0-7. Jay Z didn't seem to be too concerned with SJ's holdout - but the Rams might go 2-14 if he's not there. When will his contract get done?
Jeff Gordon: The two sides weren't all that far apart, relatively speaking, when the impasse hit. So I'm surprised it has even lasted this long.
Chris: Gordo:
As always, thanks for responding to our questions.
I know, I know, it's 'only' a preseason game but in the past few years, regular season performance has somewhat mirrored that of the preseason, and coming off a 3-13 season, I would have thought there would be more of a sense of urgency from both coaches and players. The starters appeared listless and disjointed, and the 2nd/3rd string players, while somewhat more motivatedm did not fare much better (with the possible exception of the kickers and Berlin + Looker, to name a few)
Is there hope that they can work the kinks out over the next 3 games and put something decent together for the season? Or are we looking at a high draft pick and new coaches next year?
Still looking for a glimmer...
Jeff Gordon: The coaches are still looking for a glimmer, too. I would expected a spirited week of practice, starting this afternoon. But there is plenty to be worried about, like the depth at linebacker.
SteveW: Hi Jeff.
My question is who is telling the truth about Jim Edmonds? The cards spin on it was that he desired to be traded to the west coast. He had not been good for a year plus in St Lou and was awful in San Diego.
Then he comes to the cubs and plays on fire, with a vengence against the cards. Is he mad at them? Is he trying to prove something? Where was this calibre of play for the cards? Is management once again not telling the truth about his departure, and/or his injury situation?
(I guess that is more than one question)
thanks.
btw, I think it's time to start preparing for '09.
Jeff Gordon: Edmonds didn't want to leave here. The Cards were ready to move up their younger outfielders, which proved to be a good decision. Edmonds didn't fit in San Diego, but I'm not surprised he rose to the occasion of playing for the Cubs. He always had a flair for the dramatic.
cardfan89447: Gordo,
What's the story on Carp? Is it a mild strain or something more? Maybe a symptom of coming back too fast? Does this change how Waino rehabs and is he headed back to the starting rotation? I would love to see Thompson take Carp's turn in the rotation if he needs to miss the next one. I think Thompson is completely under rated and have always thought he needs to be given a real shot. I also heard rumblings that Mo might be sniffing around Paul Bryd. Any truth to the rumor? Hopefully this is all just a minor speed bump for us, but history makes me think otherwise.
Jeff Gordon: I'd be worried. Talking to him last night, he described the pain as pretty sharp. He arm wasn't hurting afterward, but then he wasn't throwing the ball either. Let's see how he feels today and if he throws on the side as scheduled Tuesday. But I would expect him to miss time. And that could change how Wainwright is handled.
Did Carp come back too soon? If this problem proves to be serious, then you could make that argument.
Chris: Holy cow,
I realize it's preseason but what happened to our run defense? Do you see it getting better? Would you say it's more coach or player issues? Hopefully this knocked off the dust and their head is in the game.
Way to go for Dane, I hope he stays a Ram. Do you see him playing this year given the WR spots for grabs?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Looker is making a great case for himself. With Avery off the field, it'll be interesting to see what he and Hall do. Looker is a favorite of Linehan's and he is a pro -- although he won't stick just to be a holder. The punter handles that chore now.
OCRams Fan: Hey Gordo, thanks for taking my question.
I know the Rams have played only one pre-season game but should we get alarmed at the lack of run stopping on the D again? I really don't want to say "here we go again". I know it's early but we have history to remind us the past few years! Shouls we be alarmed? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Sure, you should be alarmed. The Rams got tossed like rag dolls.
sean: i was just wondering why the 1st team was not left in longer. it makes sense to people who dont know anything about football that a team sport may require just a little bit of chemistry. leave the offense in! leave them in a whole game! injuries? bah to injuries, we wont win with out the team playing like a team, if a player goes down, its a sacrifice for the chemistry for an intire season. how can saunders' offense run without timing? it cant. how csan we build timing without live football action? linehan has proven in his preseason stupidity of not playing his players more that you cant. it's frustrating, and i'm angry that fans can see that the 1st team should be left in, but the coach cant. angry.
Jeff Gordon: Good point. Jim Thomas was just making the point up here at Rams camp that the first unit should stay in the next game until it scores a TD -- even if it takes all night. The Rams can't afford to back into this season.
Petey123: So, this is the new and improved rams Linehan talked about. What are chances Linehan doesn't make it through the season? What are the positives Linehan brings to the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: Linehan is a good football man, but he still must prove he has the leadership ability to command an entire organization. This could be his last chance to prove that.
RamsrollerNY: Unlike many of the Ram Nation, I am not ready to write off the season from one less than wonderful showing. However, I am wondering if you think training camp has been too easy for the Rams, or is there another reason they seemed so ill prepared to play vs. the Titans?
Also, with the Jackson hold out, do you honestly see a quick end to this or will it haunt us all season. With what happened to Ike, I tend to side with Steven here....the days of loyalty from an organization are long gone I think. But I still think he is our best shot to win....
Thanks for your help, us NY fans miss out...and we are Sick of Favre stories already!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: The organization is committed to retaining top players. Linehan has made that a priority and we've seen several guys taken care of. Jackson would join that list if he plays along with Zygmunt here. And, no, camp has not been too easy. That live action against Tennessee should have prepared the team for the game itself.
kdw005: How does Cy Young voting go for someone like CC Sabathia? He seems to be having a great season, but hasn't spent much of it in the NL and wouldn't make sense to get it in the NL
Jeff Gordon: He could still win in the NL by winning all his starts. It's not like there is a minimum victory total he would need to get there. Switching leagues in midstream obviously does make it tough to wins award, though.
Chip: The defensive line does EXACTLY like they did all year last year, it has to be design flaw, how can they give up these HUGE runs again this year already...horrible, I thought Haslett was a good coach but this is his defense and it stinks (no safeties cause we're good to go, no LBers cause we have C. Draft to back them all up and horrible alignment on the line that gets blown up for bigger runs than probably any other team...) The offensive line also got their butt kicked, this looks just like last year...already.
Jeff Gordon: I find it hard to believe that mere alignment issues would result in that sort of thrashing. Surely some of that was the result of guys getting manhandled. And that is what has to be discouraging.
Crazy_Legs: It appears to me there is too much space between our defensive lineman. The opposing line has plenty of room to seal off two defensive lineman opening up holes my mother could run thru. What do you see as the major issue with our line upfront and how much should the linebackers be held accountable for being unable to stop the run Saturday?
Jeff Gordon: This is one of the questions we'll tackle this week in Rams camp. We've gotten questions about the scheme and the alignments, which obviously didn't work. Assignments were missed, for sure. But we need to find out if this is ability-related as well.
Vincent: I have a few questions. What happened to the Rams? Is it that the organization drafts the wrong players? Have teams caught up with the high power offense gimic? I just don't understand why the Rams have fallen off.
Jeff Gordon: The offense is no longer high-powered. At the end of the Martz Era, teams had made adjustments, yes. And Mad Mike's willingness to let QBs take hits against the blitz caught up to Warner and Bulger. Right now the Rams just aren't as good -- and, yes, some missed draft picks contribute to that.
I still think Saunders can make something of this offense once Jackson returns.
redbirdswin: Wainwright returning as the closer - is this still written in stone now that Carp could potentially miss some time? It's going to be real tough to swallow if BOTH injured aces don't return successfully to their starting roles for the stretch run. I know Waino could help the bullpen if he returns to his old self, but how many chances will he get if the Cards' offense can't get leads in games? Starting pitching has been solid as of late, it just seems we can't get enough runs on the board (excluding Saturday in Chicago, of course).
Jeff Gordon: Carpenter's setback, after Mulder's setback, tells you that counting on pitchers coming off the DL is tough. If Carpenter has to miss time, the team may rethink Wainwright's role -- especially if Chris Perez can help hold the late-inning fort.
Steve: Hey Jeff
When do you think the Rams will stop dealing with Steven Jackson like the US goverment deals with terrorists? They need to get to the table and get things going, I'm sure about 1000 people are saying this, but as we all recall Jackson did not get off to a good start last season, and reps in the preseason would be very beneficial to him, especially with the complicated offense Saunders is bringing in. The Eagles got Brian Westbrook in with a new deal, as did the Packers with Ryan Grant. It's time for the Rams to realize that maybe more than anything else the Rams need a healthy Steven Jackson to have any success this season.
Jeff Gordon: It's not unfair to ask a player under contract to come to camp while the two sides work out a deal. Having said that, the Rams need to get off the blocks on this Jackson thing and make something happen.
Mike: Although, the focus may be more on the secondary, do you see forsee any interest in Brandon Moore, just released from the Niners? He's two years removed from well over a 100 tackles, 29 years of age, and is versatile to play slb and mlb. Mccargile looked pretty good over the weekend but with Draft ailing and an often injured Pisa, sure would like some more depth there. Early on, the only rook brought in, that seems to have a chance is Chamberlin, and Moore is also an excellent special teams player; the kick off coverage over the weekend looked again to be somewhat suspect.
Jeff Gordon: Talking to folks up here are camp, the Rams HAVE to be considering veteran help at LB. Most of the youngsters competing for back-up spots look vulnerable.
UtahCardsFan: I had an opening day bet with my cousin that the Cards wouldn't get five wins our of Clement, Mulder and Capenter combined this year. I'm willing to double down on that and say they won't combine for five more wins EVER.
It's a bet I'd like to lose, but I don't think I will.
Jeff Gordon: You would lose that bet. Carpenter will be fine over the long haul.
Larry L.: Is there something about the way MLB players regard Pujols that we don't know? We're always hearing announcers and writers calling him possibly the best player in baseball or at least the best hitter, as he certainly seems to be. Yet for the second year in a row, his peers---his fellow players---have failed to vote him onto the NL All-Star team. He had to be inserted by other means. What's up with that?
Jeff Gordon: Well, look at the other first basemen having huge years. There are a ton of them. Albert is well-respected, but . . .
redbirdswin: Any word on whether or not Rick Ankiel will be in the starting lineup tonight vs. Florida?
Jeff Gordon: Will he play again in our lifetime? In my mind, this was the sort of injury best treated by putting a player on the DL for 15 days and letting him rest it.
redbirdswin: Looking towards the offseason, what are realistic targets for the Cardinals to pursue among free agents? Would they pay the hefty price for Fuentes, take a risk with Furcal, pay up for Kyle Lohse, etc?
Jeff Gordon: I expect them to bid Lohse and Fuentes for sure. Furcal's age and injury issues will merit a long look. If he was five years younger and not coming back from surgery, paying him huge dollars would make sense.
owen: AFTER WATCHING THE GAME AND READING SOME OF THE POSTS I AM IN AGREEMENT THAT OUR 2ND AND 3RD STRING PLAYERS DID NOT MATCH UP WELL ESPECIALLY ALONG BOTH SIDES OF THE LINES.DO YOU THINK THERE IS ANY WAY THAT WE CAN REALISTICALLY IMPROVE THAT DROP OFF OF TALENT THRU WAIVER WIRE.MORE SO ON DEFENSE THAN OFFENSE.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams might get a veteran or two to shore things up. Some of the kids bidding for sports are really late picks and street free agents. That is a recipe for trouble.
Jeff Wade: Does Steven Jackson know he has a contract for this season? (I know the line about all the players do it). This is great theatrics by the Rams and Mr. Jackson with ticket sales a little down. He will eventually sign a earth shattering contract, draw lots of media attention and everybody will love him even after he gets out of 2 a day practices in the heat and didn't honor his contract. How sad.
Jeff Gordon: I can certainly see this perspective. I didn't agree with his strategy. The Rams have all the leverage in this matter, including the ongoing fine accumulation. Jackson needs this extension or else he takes all the risk this year. He needed to come to came trusting that a deal could be finalized.
Kiko: Thanks for answering your questions, as a Life Long Rams fan living in New Mexico, its great to have a place like this to go to for Rams News. Thanks
First off, read the story about yoga, now was it the Titans doing Yoga or the Rams? Do a lot of NFL teams do this and if so is it effective?
Second, what is Jay Zygmunt thinking???? Jackson wants to sign an extension, so give him the money because I know there are plenty of teams out there who will want to give him more! GET IT DONE! How much more time can he miss for it to really affect the first few games???
Jeff Gordon: Interesting, isn't it, how fans are divided on Jackson. As for the yoga, the Rams must try everything to cut down on the injuries they suffered last year. That was ridiculous.
steele: Hey sir!
Thanks for doing this each week!!
I was curious if there was any Cardinals interest in the recently designated for assignment Al Reyes? He pitched well for us 3 years ago and showed that could close in the AL east last year for the not-so-dominant Devil Rays, and if I remember correctly we were reluctant to let him go, but conceded due to his age/injury concerns. I know he has been a bit injured this year, but with the possibility that we may have to tread softly with Carpenter and thus put Wainwright back in the rotation, could Al Reyes be our pseudo-savior if Perez falters?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards really like Al. It would just depend on where his arm is right now. I'd take a look at him for sure, unless the scouts believe he isn't right.
trey: hey gordo,
i was justwondering if you jay zygmunt will get a deal done with steven jackson soon??? did u see our RB's in the last game vs. tennesee? We couldnt possibly carry them into the regular season bcuz they couldnt even rack p yards on 2nd and 3rd team defense..i just really want the rams and SJ to get something done quick so SJ can learn the offense and be ready for week one vs the eagles
Jeff Gordon: The clock is ticking . . .
Tony Bell: The Blues have been awfully quiet. Is anything up? I would hate to think they are satisfied with being in "rebuilding" mode for a year, while the rest of the conference gets further away.
Jeff Gordon: Again, they have spent their money on guys (Kariya, McDonald, Brewer, Jackman) who have to play better. That is the key to the season.
Pat: The cards have had a great run, no one thought we would be anywhere near this good. Personally I didn't believe those dire predictions, but I'll admit I thought we would play .500 ball, so this has been a fun summer. After going head to head with the cubs , even though they were close, our chances are slipping away. Wainright is on the mend, Carp is...?
so on to the question...Do we have a shot still? Will Mo get us someone now that our 2 aces are questionable to start again for awhile?
Jeff Gordon: Anybody you get now is just a stopgap. I'd rather see kids pitch than most of what's out there.
Bryan: I seriously wonder what's going on at the Rams practice. Especially when the defense is practicing. After watching the Rams Titans game i've come to the conclusion that either Haslett's scheme is too complicated leading to mistakes/misunderstandings by the players, or the defensive coaches are not coaching these players correctly. Is Haslett going to finally do something about this because after seeing two years of poor run defense it deosn't seem like they changed up anything in the scheme or practice?
Jeff Gordon: We'll watch practice closely this week, but I can't believe that it's too complicated. Although a lot of guys do miss assignments . . .
dd79: Gordo,
In your opinion, is there a possibility the Cards and D-Backs will discuss Adam Kennedy for one of their bullpen arms since Hudson's out for the year? Not sure about the D-Backs situation, but I can't believe the Cards would mind sending him over.
Jeff Gordon: Good idea!
Rambunctious: Hi Jeff:
1)Is Kreider now deemed healthy by the Rams? If so do you see him being the first team blocking back? (I don't mean at the expense of Leonard as they apparently will be expected to fulfill different roles).
2)How serious is Avery's injury, will he be out much longer?
3)The game against the Titans was ugly period! Do you expect more of the same on both sides of the ball against the Chargers? The old saying "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," comes to mind. I hope Jacob Bell, Chris Long, and Adam Carriker turn out to be more than lipstick .. Thanks in advance !!
Jeff Gordon: Those guys you mentioned are all on the spot. The Rams need to block and tackle! Kreider is being counted on to fix the blocking back situation, which means Leonard becomes a utility back. As for Avery, not sure how much longer on him.
Pat: I remember Eck had an ab strain and he was DL'd twice in the same year for it right? now Ank has an ab strain and he hasn't played in 2 weeks save an at bat here or there .wouldnt in have made more sense to DL him and call up another player? isn't an ab strain something that can reoccur if not properly rested/ treated?
Jeff Gordon: I agree, but TLR valued him as a pinch-hitter more than Stavinoha. Has Rasmus been healthy, this would have been a great time to break him in.
Mark C: Hey Gordo! OK. I know pre season does not mean all that much, but why is it that the Rams seem to totally suck in these games? I mean hear we go again. First team can't get a score. Bulger's throws are off his back foot just like last year (This is a huge concern) and all he can talk about is golf. I thought he had his confidence back. The defence can't stop anyone and there is always an excuse, like we have a player/players hurt, WELL SO DO OTHER TEAMS! and it does not affect them like it does us. I know SJ is not in the mix, but are our other backs that bad? The Titans backs ran through us and it did not matter who it was. You could probably take the guy selling peanuts out of the stands and let him run through our D
I hoped our D would be much improved against the run I mean on paper we look really good. Why were they so bad? It kinda seems that no matter how good a player is, when they come to the Rams they forget how to play. Is this coaching? Haslet was a great coach, what happend? Where is Al Saunders great offence? And you can't say oh well it's just the first game. I saw a lot of other teams perform great on their first outing.
Please give me some insight on what is wrong. I am a dedicated Rams fan, always have and always will, can't help it, I love this team and do not expect a Super Bowl win, but just want to see them fight to win, they don't even have to win, just see them try and fight for it.
Also SJ is hurting this team. He signed a contract! Steven live up to your contract! You are no Marshal Faulk. He has all year to get an extention. I am a former U S Olympian and have seen this kind of athlete, they are selfish and not a team player. If this continues, the Rams should cash in on him and get a first round pick for next year, or shop for another one fast. From the way this last game went we will need all the first rounders we can get.
Jeff Gordon: We just talked to Clifton Ryan on KFNS ("The Sports Edge, noon to 2 p.m.) and he attributed the problems to missing players (Witherspoon, Brown, Atogwe and Draft) and some missed assignments. He insisted this scheme can get results and he noted that it did get results until the injuries deplted the group last year. But this will be a big week of work.
rich: Jeff; Any word on Carp felt this morning after waking up? soreness, swelling etc?
I know this may be a redundant question, if so just ignore it.
Thanks
Rich
Jeff Gordon: I'm at Rams camp, but I'm sure STLToday.com will have any updates on Carpenter as they become available.
Pat: Ryan to the minors, good move or no? btw how is he doing down there?
Your thoughts on Lopez? so far he shows some motivation that he wants to play ,and TRL seems to love the guy.
Reyes to the Indians, we get little/nothing in return, they get a potential 4 or 4 starter, IF he stays happy and on his game. too bad he couldn't have had a long career as a card.
Jeff Gordon: If Carp is out a while and Reyes throws well for Cleveland, that will stir some chatter for sure.
Lopez is a handy guy, although I'd rather have a natural outfielder with power in that spot. How many middle infielders can one organization have? I didn't mind Ryan going to Memphis to play full time at short, given the circumstances. Braden vacated that spot to go to the Olympics.
zenonator: No, NO, NO, Not another lackluster start. What is wrong with this group of underachievers anyways? I swear its enough to quit on this Team and I've been a fan for over 33 years and find that a repulsive alternative. Bulger seems like driftwood after a new contract, Haslett must just be Pathetic. Linehan moves the team into a better atmoshere for training and they repay him by playing soft and cuddly. Please tell me what is going on with these Clowns ? Lets deal with this EARLY this time. Is it really time to clear the house yet !!
Jeff Gordon: It seems like the Tennessee trip was anything but cuddly, but it still didn't pay off. Weird. Bulger isn't complacent because of money, but he is still recovering from the beating he took last year.
Pat: Gordo, your the man! I really appreciate the opportunity to bounce questions/ comments off you.
lets trade Dunc, Mulder, Izzy, clement( even though we already released him...), and the guy we got for Reyes in a package, im sure that could fetch a nice starter.
hmm...recovering starters , struggling relievers, and an injured slugger, sounds like a perfect trade for Dave Duncan.
Its bad, i know, but i had to toss it out there, probably wont get posted...
Oh heres a question ... I hear the infield fly rule called on occasion, the batter is automatically out, if the ball is caught or not. runners still get the option to run, from my understanding. do the runners ever try to advance ? as a fielder couldn't you let the ball drop and try to trick the runner?
Jeff Gordon: Runners advance at their own peril, so they seldom try it. By definition, the infield fly is right there on the infield, so there is almost never a chance to go anywhere.
The rule exists so infielders don't just let the ball drop and either go for the forceout of the faster runner or get two runners in motion.
Joe: Jeff,
I realize that last Saturday's game was just a preseason game but the Rams play still had to be very disturbing and discouraging to the Rams coaches. Seems like this game showed a lot of weaknesses the Rams need to work on but the run defense is probably their biggest concern right now. Do you know if the Rams are looking to add or trade for any DT's and/or LB's in the near future to help them stop (or at least slow down) the run? Is it correct that the Rams 1st String Defense did a pretty good job last Saturday night while out there and it is mainly the reserves that the Rams and their fans need to be concerned with? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are OK at DT with that they have, because Adeyanju can move inside. With Draft and Witherspoon out, their lack of veteran depth at linebacker got exposed.
Jay: Gordo -
Short and sweet:
Who can we expect to see come up when rosters expand Sept 1?
Thank you!
Jeff Gordon: Phelps will help the team's power on the bench. Ryan returns. Flores returns, if he throwing well. Rasmus comes up if he is healthy. Anderson would be a worthy third catcher. Barden is a handy guy coming back from the Olympics. That's a start.
Let's go Blues: Gordo,
Any news on the Blues? What would you consider the 3 to 5 keys to success for the upcoming season?
Jeff Gordon: Keys:
Mason upgrades goaltending over Toivonen.
Cleaner defensive zone play.
More offense from McDonald, Kariya and Stempniak.
Oshie, Berglund et al add fresh legs.
HAMMER: When is the Blues Third jersey coming out?
Are the Cards going to acquire an impact player through a waiver trade anytime soon?
Jeff Gordon: Not sure about the third jersey. The Cards could add a pitcher at any point, especially if Carpenter really is hurt. There are some interesting names hitting the wire as teams dump salaries.
pj: I know the Grizzlies and the Bandits are minor league teams, but both teams have won their respective championships within the last few years. Why do they get no media love? KSHE was at a grizzlies game a few weeks back. they hardly ever get a mention in the Post. I love the Blues , but they havent been great. the cards are the cards enough said... the rams, tho, SUCK but they get ALL kinds of media attention.
Jeff Gordon: You are talking about Class A, independent league baseball teams. It is tough to command the attention the big league teams get. It just is. The P-D, like every outlet, has to prioritize. And fans can't get enough Rams/Cards/Mizzou/Blues.
JP: Where in the world is the PASSION on this football team????
Maybe it's just me but I saw more excitement & passion from the other teams
around the league.
Hopefully Dick Vermeil's has one helluva speech left in him for the
troops because they sorely need it! From your "inside knowledge" would it be fair to say that while Linehan may be a nice man he doesn't have the respect or confidence of the players under him......
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't say that, but Scott does have to ramp up the leadership. All eyes are on him as the team comes off a 3-13 fiasco.
trey: do u think the rams have a shot at the NFC west?
i really think that they are the best team in the nfc west and dont think the hawks are better..truthfully who would u pick to win the NFC west?
Jeff Gordon: I like Arizona this year. And Seattle always beats the Rams . . . so I'm not optimistic.
Pat: when does training camp start for the blues? a buddy and I were gonna catch a few practices/scrimmages. I think remember hearing they will all be at Scott trade or split half & half, he says they are all still at the Mills, whos right?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues' first preseason game is Sept. 22, but I'm not sure when camp starts. They won't practice much more than a week, I believe, before they play.
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
A couple of questions related to Cards' pitching:
1) If you're TLR and Chris Carpenter can't make his next scheduled start later this week, who would you start in Carp's rotation turn?
2) I read Joe Strauss' post on Mark Mulder looking to try to come back again in 2009. Do you feel that Mulder feels he "owes" it the Cardinals to try to come back with them next season, even if he has to take, for example, a contact paying the minimum guaranteed salary but incentive-laden? Do you think the Cards would even entertain that proposition?
Thank you.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, Mulder owes the Cards for the last two years, so it would be great if he would sign for limited guaranteed money and lots of incentives. It would be worth it then. Will he do that or go elsewhere? We'll see.
Who would replace Carpenter? Either Thompson or Garcia would be ready to step in. I'd try Garcia, with Thompson backing him.
pj: is STL really disliked by the rest of the country or do we just get overlooked all the time. we seem to have a lot of calls go against us ( at least the cards and the blues i dont follow the rams... go chiefs!! ) pitches seem to be called differently. penalties seem to go against us, there are a lot of 'missed calls' on penalties against us.
Jeff Gordon: Cue the conspiracy music! I think the Rams aren't beloved by the NFL, but that is just my paranoia.
trey: well gordo u know what?
i dont like you.
and i think u need a new job.
this is a different year and when we get SJ we gonna win the NFC west by a long shot believe it or not.marc bulger is gna go back to 2006 form.SJ is gonna have a monster year..torry holt will have a good year.and our defense will be good with witherspoon oj atogwe and LL...so think whatever u want gordo but its a whole new year.
Jeff Gordon: Sorry, but I'll stick around a little while. The Rams will be better, for sure, but it's hard to predict greatness for them in the NFC West. Holmgren has owned Linehan and Kurt Warner will keep the Gridbirds from collapsing if Leinart can't get it done.
Petey123: Linehan has another year on his contract after this year right?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, but I don't believe the team would bring him back as a lame duck. Either he gets extended or he departs. In fairness to Scott, he needs an extension if he is going to coach here next season.
Vince B.: Hey Gordo,
Jose Lopez of the Mariners would be a great addition for the 2009 Cards at 2B. He is 24 years old and is hitting .310 with 10 HRs and 31 doubles AND only 46 strikeouts.
Do you think the Cards will pursue a 2B in the off-season? This has been a revolving door over the last 15 plus years. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: It's possible that an impact bat could arrive at that position, since there are several out there. But shortstop would be a greater need, since Kennedy could hit .270 there for another year.
tc: Hi Jeff,
I know it's just pre-season, but I've NEVER been as depressed after an opening pre-season game, there was nothing to be happy about.
Prediction time: SJ signs......
Jeff Gordon: I keep saying he has to sign soon, since this holdout is senseless and both sides need it to end. But nobody listens to me!
steele: You heard anythign about this trade of Dunn to the Diamondbacks for 3 prospects? http://www.ktar.com/sports/?nid=22&sid=930425 Whadda ya think?
Jeff Gordon: Not shocked to see Dunn move, if that happens. Cincy is dead in the water. He has a big bat, but he seems to be in a rut there emotionally. Some Cards fans wanted Dunn, but he is just a rich man's Duncan.
Patrick: Considering our schedule (Rams fan) and the current state of the organization is it likely the Rams will make an in season head coaching move if things aren't moving toward .500 or will they wait until the end of the year?
Jeff Gordon: It would take a bloody player revolt to cause a midseason change. I don't see that happening. And it is too early to talk coaching changes.
pj: a trade for Afinogenov would be stellar. free up a spot for another Dman with more offense and get a decent forward back. maybe he can pull a Boyes & have a big year here.
Did i hear this right... Walker is now with chicago?? that could make for an interesting game.
how bout this one too... Wideman got a new deal 16M over 4? you mean we could have had wideman for the same price as jackman or mckee? I'd take Wideman over those 2 anyday.
Jeff Gordon: Wideman finally cleaned up his defensive game to a extent, so that deal is fair for him. And, yes, as valuable as Boyes is to this team, the Blues could use a PP QB.
Yes, big Matt is a Hawk. So, yes, that will be interesting.
That appears to be the last question, so we'll catch you next time!
