drelboc: Hey Gordo;
Last night my dad made an interesting statement that I believe makes sence in regard to Skip Schumaker and the situation the Cardinals find themeselves in as far as what to do with him due to all the quality outfielders they have. As we all keep hearing, Skip may be the likely odd man out and a trade chip to be used this winter. But for all the SKIP fans who would like to see Skip remain a Cardinal, here is an idea that my dad suggested:

Why not convert Skip into a SECOND BASEMAN? We both think his physical condition, size, athletic ability, mental makeup and heart would all work for his chances to be a successful converted 2nd Baseman who might enjoy that success such as Craig Biggio did (catcher, 2b and OF) at Houston, (amongst others who have switched positions).

The Cards could still upgrade a bat at the SS position through FREE AGENCY (FA) like (CABRERA)as well as obtain one or two pitchers through trade or FA. Also, would not this move save them some money? Finally, if you needed Skip to fill in the outfield to give one those guys a break and get some playing time in for the utility infielders Skip could go out there and fill in nice.

A 2009 lineup might look like this...

SS Cabrera
LF Rasmus
1B Pujols
RF Ludwick
CF Ankeil
3B Glaus
C Molina
P Pitcher Spot
2B Schumaker

As I said, it makes sence to us. But then, we believe Skip could do it. What are your thoughts on the matter?

As always, I am very grateful to get your feedback! And this time my dad is very interested to. He'd ask you himself, but he is not up to par with the computer age. ;>)

"THANK YOU" Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: This has been suggested many times before by STLToday.com readers unwilling to write off Skip after this season. If Skip added a ton of power or speed, this might be a worthy experiment. But his offensive profile isn't all that different from what the Cards have seen at second base from Miles, Kennedy, Lopez and Ryan this year.

Unless another team is willing to give up something good for Schumaker, I see Skip has a very valuable extra outfielder for next season. I'd like to see Rasmus, Ankiel and Ludwick start next season with Schumaker and Mather behind them. That would provide lots of offense and defense.

roger from lake tahoe: on friday night in cinncinnatti there was a strange play at home. the throw from glauss beat patterson to the plate by three steps. as larue caught the ball he was leaning backwards. he had the plate blocked and put the glove down and patterson slid into the glove as larue was falling backwards. as this happened the home plate umpire was coming from behind larue around to the side to see the call. by the time he got into position, the tag had been applied and now there was separation between tag and runner. the umpire missed the call. my question - since the umpire must have known he was late getting into position, why did he not consult another umpire? tony came out but really didn't put up much of an argument. why? i have hd tv and the camera shot was pretty good.
Jeff Gordon: I couldn't believe the call either, since the ball arrived well ahead of the runner. LaRue didn't slam the door, a you say, but I thought the runner popped up short of the plate. That is a really easy "out" call, whether or not LaRue actually applied the tag. But that is the home-plate umpire's call. He isn't going to get help unless something odd happened -- like the ball got away from the catcher and he somehow didn't see that. Otherwise, he is at least 90 feet closer to the play than the other umps.

MizzouMarv: Jeff, everyone is jumping on Mizzou's wagon, but realistically Mizzou could lose to IL (1st game & IL is good), Nebraska (haven't won there since '78) & TX (@ Austin & TX still has better athletes). If that would happen would the fans still see Mizzou as a very good team (9-3) or would they jump of the bandwagon?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, that could all happen. And Mizzou fans would see a secondary bowl as a major letdown. Mizzou does need to convert this talent into 10 victories to keep its progress going. The program has a ways to go to become a Top 10 program in terms of attendance, resources, recruiting and so forth. So losses to Illinois, Nebraska and Texas would set back the program.

marvin slay: Van Brocklin-to-Fears:

What keeps Linehan as coach next year?
a. 5-11
b. 6-10
c. 7-9
d. 8-8
e none of the above
Thanks Mr. Gordon
Jeff Gordon: If the Rams finish 8-8 with this schedule, Scott would have a chance -- IF there were many signs of progress on both sides of the ball. I believe 9-7 would earn him a contract extension. But if the Rams finish 7-9 or worse, there will be a LOT of empty seats at The Ed and high motivation for Rams management to make a change.

The Bandit: Jeff,
I think it's pretty obvious this team has a huge quarterback problem(present and future).
Jeff Gordon: We'll see. Bulger made some good throws Saturday night, but the missed connections were ugly. Green looks capable of moving the team, so fans will call for him if Marc starts a real game like he started the preseason game with San Diego. The Berlin/Gradkowski battle is encouraging, since either would be a fine No. 3. But neither is a Quarterback of the Future.

Michael Kent: Jeff ...

I think we can agree that 2009 offers many possibilities for the Cards in terms of what they might do to complete their rotation. While we know they have Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright, and Joel Pineiro locked in for next year, two other rotation positions will have to be filled.

In past chat sessions, you've been adamantly in favor of the Cards extending Kyle Loshe's contract as soon as possible. But what's your feeling about re-signing Braden Looper and/or Todd Wellemeyer? Both seem to be regaining traction as we move toward the final six weeks of the season. I know Looper becomes a free agent, but what about Wellemeyer? Does he become a free agent, or is he only arbitration-eligible?

Will Looper and/or Wellemeyer factor into the equation only if the Cards fail to re-sign Loshe? Or, do you feel like the Cards will get their other rotation pitchers from within (Garcia/McClellan/Boggs/Parisi). Do they dare shop again for another Kip Wells- or Matt Clement-like bargain bin special? Or, as I brought up to you last week, take one last chance on Mulder if Mulder feels like he "owes" the Cards and would sign for small guaranteed money that's heavy on incentives?

Thank you.
Jeff Gordon: Wellemeyer has positioned himself for a two- or three-year deal with some real money. The Cards still control that situation. Looper has increased his value in free agency. Lohse is coming back to the free agency pack, dollar-wise, and that is a good thing for the Cards.

So . . . Carpenter, Wainwright, the revived Pineiro appear to be in for next year. Wellemeyer is likely in and then either Looper or Lohse could also return. McClellan and Garcia are candidates for the rotation, but Kyle has obvious bullpen value, too. Garcia could use another half year at the Claas AAA level, as could Clayton Mortensen.

The Cards will have money to spend this offseason, so it's fair to expect some quality reinvestment in pitching.

karen: I know it has been a while, but why was Ryan Ludwick's batting helmet in the ASG different than the regular team helmets? thanks, karen
Jeff Gordon: He didn't pack the right helmet.

DannyB: Any word on how Duncan is recovering? Also, have you heard if Memphis will remain with the Cards?
Jeff Gordon: The Memphis situation looks much better now that the Cards have given that city a competitive team. The Redbirds are tied with the fifth most victories in the PCL this year and good prospects are coming up the organizational ladder. I would expect that affiliation to last now.

Duncan's recovery will take some time. We may not know his future until next year.

Brett G.: Ok, I don't know how much this has been talked about or what, but what's the situation on Duncan? Or McRae? I know Dunc's contract is up after this year and I belive McRae's is(?). Will they get one-year deals and they ride off with LaRussa? Or Tony re-ups and Dunc and McRae sign multi-year deals as well? Thanks for the time.......
Jeff Gordon: I would expect the coaches to last as long as TLR lasts. Both guys have done great work this season under tough circumstances. Duncan's success with the younger pitchers (McClellan, Perez, Garcia, Boggs) was critical this year, as was McRae's work with Ludwick, Ankiel, Schumaker, Mather, Barton, et al.

Paul: hi jeff--looks like the testing of waters by waivers is going on as usual. any idea who the cards floated? particularly worried about izzy falling so far he may not be signed by us or anyone, much less be a type-A.
thought?
thanks
Jeff Gordon: I would assume Isringhausen and Kennedy have been available for some time. Izzy has declined to the point where he would have to sign for low money plus incentives for next year. And I can't imagine any team signing him to close.

bill: If the cardinals fall off of the wild card chase, do you see Pujols shuting it down and getting elbow surgery? If he waits to long he'll miss a good portion of next year. I don't think he would come out and say it but I think his elbow has sapped some of his power this year. It would be a shame for him to fall short of 30 and 100 this but having him 100% next year would be immensely helpful.
Jeff Gordon: Because surgery would eradicate him for a chunk of next season, I don't see him undergoing repairs unless the elbow ligament ruptures completely. He will try to soldier on.

Rich: Hey Gordo,

When do the Rams expect F. Brown and OJ to get back in the line-up? Even though they are the Rams two best DBs, in my mind they still need to get some playing time in the pre-season.

Thanks again for hosting these chats

Rich
Jeff Gordon: I would expect Atogwe to get some reps, since he has been able to get back on the practice field. The Rams need Brown for the real games. As long as Brown is physically fit, I don't see the need to get him too much preseason action. Given the loss of King, this team must be very careful with him.

HEG: Gordo I still think it is going to be very difficult for the cards to make play-offs even as a wild card. Rick Ankiel needs to work on hitting off speed breaking ball; they are striking him out on 3 pitches (same pitches).Re; the Rams-if I was the Rams front office & Jackson did not sign this week I would let him sit out this year; most players when they sign about time the season starts are inaffective for the year especially at skills positions;they need to take Ralph Kiner approach- Rams finished 3-13 with Jackson & could finish 3-13 w/o him; I will reiterate what I stated last week in that the Rams would be as good or better with Green at Q.B. Agree or disagree?
Jeff Gordon: The calls for Trent Green have begun! I am a big Green fan and I think he could fill in nicely, but I'm certainly not ready to write off Bulger.

I would give Jackson a deadline this week. Resolve the contract, get back to work or else:

No contract extension this season.

No contract extension next season, either, since he is eligible for the franchise tag.

Either he gets his $17 million to $20 million signing bonus to bank this week or he gets no such bonus for at least two years.

That hard line could force the Rams to deal this guy in a year, but so be it. Either Jackson wants to play here or he doesn't.

kerry lewis: Ever since that afteful day when Warner was benched following the season opening loss to the NYG even when he said he was good to go, I've been screaming from Hawaii that Bulger sucks. Bottom line. He may put up some stats but when the "bulge" hits the fan, he'll toss the big pick, take the big sack, an d do so inexplicably as he did at the end of that season vs carolina in the playoff at home, just a few yards out of fg range in ot when Martz (the real culprit here) asked those around him, "How can you do that?" Hey, give it up already, clean the house! Were the Rams not posturing for Henne in rd 2? omg, clean the house out and bring in Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow. No?
YES!
Jeff Gordon: Urban Meyer? Yikes. He makes Mike Martz appear humble by comparison. Tebow is a fine collegiate player, but can he really play in the NFL?

Bulger has been a Pro Bowl-caliber QB in this league. He isn't likely to match Warner as a MVP, but he is still a pretty good player. He needs to get in sync, for sure, so it'll be interesting to see how much progress he makes before the opener. I would play him in the final two preseason games until he produces a couple of TDs.

LongIslandRam: Jeff,

Do you think the Rams should be trying to be active on waiver pickups even if it means they get a few players who know nothing about the Rams systems?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, they have to shop. Having lost a veteran guard and a veteran tackle, they will keep an eye on offensive linemen who pop free. The same could be said at safety and cornerback.

Sean: I know that Bulger has spent extra time going over film and study with the offense, but has anyone seen him spending extra time throwing to the receivers to get his timing down, because to me it looks like that is a major problem for him this preseason.
Jeff Gordon: He has thrown a zillion passes in the preseason and he will throw a ton more. Admittedly, that hasn't translated into results during preseason games yet.

ed: Why do the rams continue to play the free agency game so poorly. They needed big names on offensive line and linebaker in years past and fell to the back because of their passive approach. In my opinion, the 2 most needed and important positions in the NFL are offensive line-to establish the run and protect the quarterback and linebacker- the most important ingredient in a good(see New England)defense. Anybody can run the ball, or even throw the ball, when a good/great offensive line. Why do you think 6th round draft choices look so good(see Tom Brady-who didn't look so good in the Superbowl when getting pressured)?
Jeff Gordon: The linebacker choices this year weren't all that compelling for a 3-13 team looking to rebuild. And the o-line has been fine during the preseason with Incognito and Pace back from the injured list. Bell was a solid free agent pick-up, especially now that Setterstrom is hurt again. The Rams found two solid guards in the draft and Brett Romberg will be fine at center.

ueaces: Hi Gord,
Always love the work you do. Bring back the "manly morning show"!!!
It would seem that the Cardinals are not going to go away in regards to contending for the wild card. They could have been buried by the Brewers when they ran off 8 straight wins, but hung in there. Do you get the impression that Milwaukee may start feeling the pressure a litte more down the stretch? Also, it seems the Cardinals may have pulled off a heist in landing Felix Lopez. His versatility and overall game could pay off big these last forty something games.
Jeff Gordon: Ah, the "Manly Morning Show." I hated that name. It was more ironic, really, since neither Dave Greene or myself were Hercules. I'm quite happy doing "The Sports Edge" on KFNS from noon to 2 p.m. every day.

As for the Cards, they found more than I imagined with Lopez. This was a Jocketty-like addition. He plays will energy, like Ryan, but he has more polish than Brendan. IF the Cards hang around long enough to get all their reinforcements, they could apply pressure on Milwaukee.

Big A: A question for Hockey Guy,

A brilliant PR move was made last year by Checketts, Davidson & co. with the inauguration of the "St. Louis Blues Fan Fest," a free event that temporarily allowed the fans to forget about the abysmal team record post-strike, watch the new youth movement in action, mingle and get autographs from veterans and prospects alike, and even all-you-can-eat Scottrade Center food.

If the Blues really are committed to winning back their fan-base, they should hold an event like this every year. However, to date I can find nothing on their website about scheduling a like event for this year's training camp. It seems like this year they are more concerned about bringing in a nearly retired 20-goal scorer (to go along with the other not nearly retired 20 goal scorers already on the roster) who played here 13 seasons ago than they are about getting the fans excited about all of the great young prospects who might just produce more than 20 goals. Going after Shanahan is a "no-brainer," Gordo, because it would take a brainless idiot to make that move for the Blues.
Jeff Gordon: A little tough there on Shanny. I'm not usually one to make nostalgic moves, since this strategy hurt the Blues in the past. But the team is so thin up front that even a 20-goal veteran would help.

The focus will remain on the kids. I would expect the team to do fan-friendly things during camp, since the youth movement IS their sales pitch this year. The Blues will spend a couple of camp days up in Peoria, too, since the the team now owns its AHL affiliate and is eager to re-engage fans from Central Illinois.

ramslife: Hey hows it going Jeff? I would like to ask you a couple questions if that is alright with you.

1. When do you see this Stevn Jackson holdout end? And why are the Rams FO not trying hard enough to pay him what he wants and get him in camp? I know he might be asking to much money/is breaking the bank but they know and the fans know the Rams don't have a shot at the playoffs or even a descent record without Steven Jackson in the Backfield.

2. With Setterstrom done for the year I can see Schuening replace him. But who will be the backup RT behind Barron? Mark Levior?

Thanks Jeff
Jeff Gordon: Right now, Goldberg is the next tackle in on either side. After that, the team might be better moving Bell outside and plugging Greco or Schuening into the guard slot.

LeVoir has had his moments in the preseason, but tackle depth is still a big concern.

I would expect Romberg to start at center and Incognito to play guard, where he can use his aggression. Leckey has played well enough this summer to earn the back-up center spot.

GoneGator: Hey Gordo, how short do you think Scotty's leash is this year, if any? It seems the Rams are doing nothing new, nor positive, this preseason - again. With Saunders as a capable HC, do you think the "uppers" will pull the trigger if the "same 'ol" style of play shows up the first 4 or 5 weeks this season?

Also, do you think we may see Green as the starter on week 1 if Bulger continues his "ways"?

Thanks for your time!
Jeff Gordon: Bulger will have a pretty long leash. He is the No. 1 quarterback and done enough in training camp to reaffirm that. Green is an appealing option because of his comfort in the Saunders offense, but it's been a while since he was a Pro Bowl-caliber QB in this league.

Linehan will have the full year, unless a dramatic player revolt or total team collapse occurs. John Shaw and Jay Zygmunt are not knee-jerk managers.

dave cobler: Hey Gordo;
Perhaps the St. Louis skyline is what Felipe Lopez needs to revive his career to levels he has attained in the past. Do you think Lopez could be that upgrade at SS for 2009? He seems happy to be here. He could probably be had for a lost less money than the other FA that are out there. That would free up more of that 30 million to go after an elite starting pitcher that has a history of being on the diamond vs the DL.

Thanks Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: He has played great so far, but installing him as the every day shortstop would require a tremendous leap in faith. His versatility would make him a logical utility guy for next year. Where does that leave Brendan Ryan? Probably not here.

The Cards still need to find a more permanent shortstop option, since '07 top pick Pete Kozma is still a few years away.

Tackleberry: Around June of this year, when Lohse was cruising and Glaus was heating up, the transition from Jocketty to Mozeliak seemed seemless. Mo looked like he would be an asset for the future. And then the first of two periods in the calender year that make the Cards fans cringe came along, the trade deadline. Cards fans got the typical lip service they have become accustomed to the past 3 seasons and the team got zero support. In fact, for the second year in a row the players designated as the "support" that were to emerge from the DL have fizzled (Wainwright TBD). SO my question is, with a large amount of cap space freeing up this winter, what do you expect to happen? An aggressive assault to fill obvious voids? The re-signing of "familiar" (see Izzy, Mulder) guys on the roster? Or better yet, a meager attempt to land big name free agents, followed by the company line of how we were barely out bid only to find out that we offered the free agent player 1/3rd the amount of money?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will be active, but they won't make the sort of high-cost mistakes that doomed teams like Seattle for years to come. Mozeliak's track record is good. The Rolen deal was bold and team-changing. The Lohse signing was a brilliant stoke. Clement didn't pan out, but his failure won't make "Mo" too cautious this winter.

He will look for value, just as Jocketty did. Let the teams that haven't had a recent parade overspend to appease the fans and sports talk radio hosts.

I'd like to see the team take some of the available money and keep guys like Lohse and/or Lohse and lock up guys like Wellemeyer, Ludwick and Ankiel. Investing in current players isn't very sexy, but it's a good way to build a consistent winner.

StempniakScores: First off thanks and of course I have to ask what are the chances with Shanahan?

But to my more original question, is there any sign or anything being said that would lead you to believe that the lines Andy Murray puts together will stay together longer than they did last season?
Jeff Gordon: Shanny appears to be a longshot. He would rather finish his career in New Jersey, Philly or perhaps Boston if the Rangers don't take him back. (And that depends on the Sundin sweepstakes.)

As for line stability, don't count on it. Murray makes young players earn their shifts from game to game. With so many kids in the mix, that guarantees a lot of shuffling. Ideally, he will find three two-player combos to build around. He could pair centers with one winger on a regular basis, then shuffle the third guy according to how things are going.

But this year, more than most, that will be difficult.

jskedavis: At the Blues development camp there was a Cliff Ronning wannabee named Vladamir Nikiforov. Any news if the Blues have an interest in signing this guy??? In my opinion, he was the most exciting, skilled player at camp and during the scrimmage he was always involved and made things happen. Yes, he's elfkin, but so was Theo Fleury.
Jeff Gordon: Vladimir Nikiforov goes 5-7 and 170 pounds. He scored 25 goals in 41 games for Barrie and Sarnia of the OHL last season as an overage player. He originally signed to play at U-Mass, but opted for the major junior route. He was born in Lithuania, but he grew up on Long Island. After playing in the Blues camp, he went home and played in the Islanders camp. It appears New York will give him a chance to earn a pro contract.

KH: Gordo,

At this point, what is the Cards offseason plan?
Jeff Gordon: The off-season plan will be a continuation of the in-season plan. The commitment to player development has paid off this year with the graduation of several players. About a third of the payroll went to injured players, so the key to '09 will be getting Carpenter and Wainwright healthy and reallocating the "dead" money toward contract extensions and a free agent or two.

Shortstop is the primary position to fill. Could Renteria become a short-term solution? Could the team stay in the Cabrera sweepstakes when the prices soar? Is Lopez really an option?

The pitching scenario will become clearer as we see Perez take more closing assignments and guys like Carpenter, Wainwright and Kinney pitch again.

I would expect Barton to spend much of next year at Memphis, since he largely skipped the Class AAA level. And Duncan will have to rebuild his career IF his operation is successful.

Tackleberry: If the Rams season mirrors their preseason, how devastating will the end result be to this franchise? Forward thinkers believed that Linehan should have been gone after last year. He is obviously part of the problem, not the solution. He does not seem to command a lot of respect from the players or the other coaches (Haslett). This would be a painful "lost" year if we just go through the motions again with Linehan at the helm and end up a sub .500 team.
Jeff Gordon: Linehan is trying to assert himself as a leader. And his team's effort was solid enough in Game 2 of the preseason. But how will this bunch hold up against a vicious schedule? This is huge test for a young head coach.

This is a fascinating time for the franchise, given the age/injury history of Bulger, Little and Pace and the Jackson contract dispute. If this team goes south, then, yes, the football operation will go into total makeover.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Of these Minor Leaguer's that we haven't seen in MLB, which ones are most likely to be "real deal" prospects and who may be an overvalued?

*Jess Todd (rising fast...)
*Fernando Salas (TON of K's)
*Jon Jay
*Allen Craig (impressive offensive #'s)
*Tyler Herron (good K to BB ratio)
*Luis Perdomo (could we have gotten more out of reyes?)
*Jason Motte (lot of K's)
*Clayton Mortensen (lot of walks)

With all of the BP trouble and a thin rotation, I am beginning to wonder why we don't see some of these guys for a brief spot start to see what they have. I understand the business side of it, but it would sure be nice to see jess todd get a spot start or two before the year is out. I would hate to pass on some free agents in november/december only to realize that he and jaime garcia are overvalued or "works in progress."
Jeff Gordon: The team doesn't want to rush a bunch of new guys onto the 40-man roster, since that would require releasing players with value.

Of the guys listed, Mortensen would be the logical next guy into the rotation, IF he were really sharp. Same for Motte and the bullpen. But Wainwright and Carpenter will be back soon. These off-days, combined with Thompson's solid fill-in start, will allow Duncan to stay the course with what he has.

September could be fun, since returning players and Memphis graduates will give La Russa a LOT of options. It would be fun to see Rasmus and Jay here, but how many at bats will the Cards have for new outfielders?

As for Anthony Reyes' trade value, he was available all year. If he had more trade value, the Cards would have see it.

JS5981: Hey Gordo, just wondering if you think the Shanahan deal will likely happen or not? Also, how do you feel about this completely going against Davidson's mantra of "building from within"? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Andy Strickland insists there is little chance of this happening, but it was good PR to put in a bid. The Blues are building from withing, whether or not they add a veteran scorer. Shanahan or another vet would not block the development of Perron, Oshie and Berglund. They will all play as much as they are ready for.

jlaue: gordo, this is more of a commment. i saw my third game at the dome sat. what a lifeless atmosphere. from the team to the crowd to the dome setting itself. the music sounded like it came from a tape recorder. if this team falters at all early in the season, i can't see more than 25,000 people seeing these games in person. the good news was i was able to take my 3 year old son and get even closer to the field. one question; does bruce g. actually give us a better chance to be competitive because of his scrambling ability?
Jeff Gordon: Gradkowski helped himself in the San Diego game. A third quarterback who can scramble has an advantage, since the No. 3 usually plays under emergency fire drill conditions. But Berlin moves around OK, too.

redbirdswin: Talk out of Florida suggests that the Marlins may be looking to deal players in the offseason that they can no longer afford with their limited payroll. The name that jumped out was Dan Uggla, a bonafide power bat. I know the Kennedy/Miles combo has done admirably at 2B this season, but there simply isn't any power there. Any chance Mo kicks the tires to see what Florida seeks in return? Would you like to see Uggla in a Cards uniform?
Jeff Gordon: Dan would add a RBI bat at a position that doesn't produce many runs. So, yes, it would be worth offering a LOT to Florida to make that happen. Would you deal Ankiel to make that happen -- since Rasmus is on the cusp, Schumaker is solid and Mather looks legit?

jd: Are there any good free agents left out there that may be on the Rams' radar? Particularly veteran help at linebacker and corner?
Jeff Gordon: Not really. Devaney keeps an eye on both positions for obvious reasons. Perhaps there are depth guys out there . . . and perhaps there is nothing much at all.

redbirdswin: Why can't Wainwright just come back as a starter, like he's supposed to? Perez has done well as interim closer, and Wainwright can give us better chances of winning through 6+ innings each time out than he will pitching one inning at the end. If Carp does return and return to form, that's two ACES for the stretch September run. I'd take my chances with those two at the helm and know that if we miss out on the Wild Card, at least we threw our best guys out there in the process.
Jeff Gordon: It could be that Wainwright will return to the rotation and Carpenter, to save on wear and tear, will move to the bullpen for the rest of this season. We'll know more about both players on Tuesday.

Marc Furtado: Now that Mark Setterstrom is out for the season, what I would like to know is how are Roy Schuening and John Greco doing? What do the coaches think about them? I see many of teh O-Linemen drafted this year playing lots of first quarter minutes...are John and Roy of that caliber? Both were seen by many as having that kind of potential prior to the draft.....
Jeff Gordon: Greco's inability to play tackle well was disappointing, but both kids look capable of playing well inside. If push comes to shove, the Rams could move Bell to tackle and plug one of these guys into LG.

Scott from So. Cal: Good am Gordo -

I'm having Dickerson, Bettis deja vu here ...
... any updates on this holdout with Jackson
coming to end this week ?
Jeff Gordon: If it gets past this week, then it becomes a HUGE issue for the team -- and a huge issue for Jackson, since the Rams have all the leverage here. Again, I would give him a deadline and threaten him with the '09 franchise tag. He is under contract. If he actually misses time this season because he wants a new deal -- thus hurting the team - then I see no reason to offer him a massive signing bonus and the lifetime security that comes with it. He can try to get that from the next team.

elvis26: hey gordon i was wondering will the cards make any trades before the aug 31st trade deadline? also who do you see the cards signing this offseason as a free agent? thanks
brian
Jeff Gordon: Barring an unexpected injury, I'd be surprised if they made a deal. I can't imagine a good lefty reliever getting through waivers to be trade-eligible. Other than that, the Cards can fill needs with players returning from the DL and coming up with the September roster expansion.

As for free agents next year, Fuentes and Cabrera are two popular names. Both would fill needs, but both will command top dollar.

Ryan: I don't think the Blues will get Shanahan anyway, but even if they could, would he be a good fit here? I mean, his production has gone down, and he's nearly 40 years old. I understand he could help educate the young players on the Blues' squad, but in doing so he'd be taking ice time away from those very same players, and for what...20 goals? I'd rather see the Blues go after Afinogenov or O'Sullivan (just rumors I know). What do you think Gordo? I know you wrote an article on this topic Friday, but is Shanahan really a missing piece to the Blues puzzle?
Jeff Gordon: Shanahan would have to help the power play. And he would sell tickets. Both are big needs here. I agree that Afinogenov and/or O'Sullivan would fit the retooling plan better and both are still possibilities if McKee moves. But Shan the Man would not get in the way of player development. This team is not all that deep at forward and the goal is always to build three scoring lines and two strong PP units.

mike: Do you think that Marc Bulger's days as #1 are numbered?

The guy looks like a million bucks during practice, but has happy feet during the game. The comments about him sound awefully familiar to the comments from mike martz on kurt warner and how well he was making passes during practice, etc and we all know what happened there. I like bulger, i think he has a lot of stuff that other guys dont, but he really looks terrible out there.
Jeff Gordon: The pressure is on! The call for Trent Green gets louder! Obviously the next preseason game is mammoth for this guy.

Chris: Where did former Cardinal Fernando Tatis go the last few years? And what is the story behind his resurgence with the Mets?
Jeff Gordon: Tatis was out of "organized baseball," as they say, in 2004 and 2005. In 2006, he decided to stage a comeback -- so he could earn enough money to build a church in his hometown back in the Dominican Republic. He saw some time in Baltimore in '06, then put up big numbers for Class AAA New Orleans last year. That earned a shot with the Mets this year. He was a longshot in spring training this season until he cut down his swing. The other key is conditioning; he had knee and shoulder problems earlier in his career, but he really trimmed down and firmed up.

Andy E: Hey Gordo! Quick question about the blues. With training camp coming up soon, who do you think has a shot of making the club? Junland, Lemtyugov, Polak, Eller? This assuming both Berglund and Oshie make the team.

Also, What can we expect from Berglund and Oshie this year. Could they both score 15-20 goals?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, those two rookies should score in that range. Berglund has the ranginess and Oshie has the speed to do more.

I'd also expect Polak to make the team and for Junland and Lemtyugov to see duty up here at some point. Eller will play in Europe.

mike: Jeff apprecite your chat
I've found us cards fans in an interesting predictament. As this was a "rebuilding" year and management obviously can not (will not) part with their dollars to improve the cards, why do we care when they dont win? Really, they weren't supposed to so when they dont have the pitching or dont have the big hit to drive in runs with the bases loaded, who cares? Except we do care, because they are so close & yet we're frustrated because MO & owners have done little to give Albert, Molina & others a chance this post season.
Jeff Gordon: Spending money is not the issue. Trading prospects is the issue. Mozeliak could have traded Perez and McClellan for veteran help, but both kids are helping the team now. The same goes for Mather. The league-wide lack of activity at the trade deadline underscores that the so-called sellers -- and there weren't many of them -- were asking for too much young talent in exchange for stopgap help.

Everybody talks about Pujols needing more help. Maybe he needs to give Ludwick more help.

dfunk: I understand that the swimming lanes are a meter wider and that there are 2 more lanes than normal (10 instead of 8) and the new suits are effective. But with the world records being shattered every other race, could blood doping be involved in swimming like it is in cycling?
Jeff Gordon: The depth of the pool and the new suits are the big factors. Across the board, swimmers saw their times drop with the suits. As for doping in the Olympics, that is a concern in most of the sports. It does happen.

davebird32: Hey Gordo,

Do you think Bruce Gradkowski has any chance of taking some snaps in the regular season? I think he would be a good change of pace guy. Not to mention it was nice to see a effective mobil QB in the Rams huddle.
Jeff Gordon: Bruce really helped his case Saturday. But Berlin is playing well, too, so the battle will rage on until the end. Both could play a lot in the final preseason game as the coaches protect Bulger and Green.

Scott: Jeff - The Cards signed the important draft pick - Brett Wallace - but with the signing deadline coming last Friday whom did the Cards fail to sign? And were they a big hit to our draft (since we are now living and dying by the draft)? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: They signed everybody of important. Nobody key got away this time. In fact, almost all of the picks signed early and got right to work.

Vince B.: Hey Gordo,

Looking to the 2009 outfield, who do you think will be the 5 that make the cut? Ludwick, Ankiel, and Schumacher are locks with Skip's stats being better than Fukodome of the Cubs. I would think Mather and Rasmus would be in the mix leaving Duncan, Barton, and Stavinoha as trade chips. Giving Mather 400 plus AB's next year could produce 20-25 plus HRs. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: I agree, although it will be hard to find Mather that many at bats unless Glaus or Pujols missed extensive time and forced him onto one of the corners.

Kiko: First off The Rams and Jackson have to work this out, PLEASE!!! I have been on Jacksons side but now he just looks like its all about him and he is lazy, get to camp!

Secondly when Linehan says Jackson is working out, do you know what he is doing, what kinda of training?
Jeff Gordon: Jackson is staying in shape, but it's not football shape. If he tries to play real games without taking bumps in practice or preseason games, he is more likely to get hurt.

Tank: Hey Gordo, We all know that the Blues have expressed interest in going after Shanahan but I read an article the other day saying that he has no interest in returning to St. Louis however if the Blues do sign him, Do you think they will give the 'C' to him? Its a no-brainer to me.... He is a veteran leader that has proved himself to be a champion.
Jeff Gordon: If Shanahan came -- which IS a longshot, it seems -- he would be an extra player, not a captain-type.

Don Nahnsen: Hi Jeff-

Albert's elbow is aching again-Any chance he has surgery if/when the Cards fall out of the Wild Card race? Rehab on this is 9+ months? Is that time frame correct?

Thank-you-Enjoy your chat and tipsheet daily

Donald
Jeff Gordon: Again, surgery isn't a great option unless the ligament ruptures. Rehab IS a long process, so he wants to avoid surgery if at all possible.

Ryan Judd: Hey Jeff,
With the large amount of off days in the coming weeks and assuming we can get Carp and Wainright back soon, are the Cardinals considering going to a 4 man rotation or would they not want to overuse those two coming off injury?
Jeff Gordon: A four-man rotation is possible for a turn or two, but Carpenter won't be put at risk. Neither will Wainwright. The other four guys are throwing fine.

Ryan Judd: Hey Jeff,
Do you think LaRussa's constant tinkering of lineups may affect guys? Every other team seems to have a set lineup day in and day out, yet we have a different lineup almost everyday. I always hear guys feel comfortable hitting in certain spots in the order, yet besides Pujols everyone else changes on a daily basis. Could this partly have to do with this team's inability to go on a nice run. Our longest win streak is 5 and have only won more than three games in a row only a handful of times.
Jeff Gordon: Tinkering can be an issue for some teams, but aside from Albert, Glaus and Molina -- whose roles have been pretty steady -- there were a lot of guys trying to establish themselves (or maintain themselves) as everyday players. This team isn't the '27 Yankees.

UtahCardsFan: What do you do with Bryan Anderson if he keeps progessing at this rate?...teach him another posision?

Molina is still young and second string catchers don't get many at bats in the majors.
Jeff Gordon: Anderson's value is as a good-hitting catcher. They are hard to find. At another position, he is just another good hitter. In time, it seems inevitable that Anderson gets moved.

Ram_Malavasi: Gordo:

2 items:

First off, in warming up for the Rams' regular season, I'm concerned about the level of intensity coming from the team - particularly the head coach. Do you see any hope that the Rams will improve enough to compete for a playoff spot this season?

Second, the Rams seem to be passing on a number of veteran free-agents (LB Brandon Moore the most recent example) that can help out on defence (not to mention targeting a veteran running back in case SJ doesn't show). Do you see/hear anything to indicate they are looking to grab some FA help - MLB, SS/CB, OL depth, etc... (I fear if they wait until the season starts, there won't be much quality left)
Jeff Gordon: The intensity was better in Week 2 of the preseason, but they will have to play like maniacs to get to the high side of .500 this season. Can they do that with Linehan? Haven't seen it yet.

As for veteran help, Devaney is a good personnel guy. He watches the market daily. But he hasn't seen much that he likes more than what he has. This team could use a veteran CB, S, LB or OT.

Rambunctious: Hi Jeff,
Is there a point where S. Jackson must come in or he'll forfeit most or all of this year's salary? Do you recall any NFL players holding out for an entire season?

Is LaCharles Bentley still unsigned? If so, given the injuries sustained by the O-line, do you think the Rams may be interested, or is Bentley's knee shot? Thanks in advance.
Jeff Gordon: Bentley wanted to go somewhere to start. Now he could start here --sorry Brett Romberg -- so it would worth looking at now. The loss of Setterstrom hurts.

Jackson could miss eight games, play eight games, forfeit half his salary and become a free agent (or franchised). If he sits out all year, he forfeits all the money for this year and plays next year under his '08 contract.

The Rams have all the leverage.

Dennis: Hey jeff,

Love your columns, just two quick questions.

1) Do you think Bulger will be able to bounce back this year?
2) What kind of impact do you see Chris Long making this year?

Thanks from CT,
Dennis
Jeff Gordon: I haven't written off Bulger . . . yet. Bernie is right -- he needs to bounce back with a nice showing in Week 3.

Long will help this year, but he has a ways to go. He is learning how to play out in space, having played a 3-4 in college. He'll make effort tackles, but he hasn't shown much pass rush yet.

bigthirstylegend: ANY POSSIBILITY OF BULGAR GETTING BENCHED IF HE CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE. WILL THE RAMS LOOK TO THE WAVIER WIRE FOR ANY POSTIONS.
Jeff Gordon: Green's presence give Linehan a great Plan B, but Bulger will get a long leash. And, yes, the Rams always watch the wire.

Curtis Maness: Gordo,

Regarding the Shanny rumors, are the Blues admitting that a rather large piece of the puzzle is still missing if we want to slip into that 8 spot this year? And if they are open to adding a free agent of his caliber now, why did they not pull the trigger on something earlier?

Thanks and keep up the good work

Curtis Maness, O'Fallon MO
Jeff Gordon: This is a unique PR opportunity, even just talking about it. Plus the money is a lot lower at the end of the summer for guys like this.

bigthirstylegend: IS STEVEN JACKSON EVER GOING TO REPORT TO CAMP
Jeff Gordon: HE BETTER!

Paulie: Gordo,
I have read on HoeckeyBuzz.com that the Blues are NOT on Shanny radar and that he would sign with another Eastern Conf team if not with the Rangers. Also the Blues have No interest in JayBo or O'sullivan. My main question is why would the Blues seek any kind of defensive help? This team needs scoring more than anything. Shanny would be great but if you have to make a deal it should be for an established scorer. Wouldn't you agree?
Jeff Gordon: JayBo and O'Sullivan would both have value here, but both would cost the team current nucleus members. I would take JayBo over Brewer or Jackman. Moving McKee alone would not be enough. And, yes, Shan the Man is a longshot. But it's fun to talk about.

D-Mac: Hey Gordo, thanks for the session.

Do you think the Rams will settle the Jackson issue like they did with Jerome Bettis, shipping him out. Or will they roll aka Jerry Jones did with Emmitt Smith and sign him up to get him in the game?
Jeff Gordon: That could happen, as a last resort. But Shaw learned from that, I hope. This team needs to extend Jackson and get him going. The alternative is not pretty.

bigthirstylegend: ANY TALK OF THE RAMS BRINGING TODD STUSSIE BACK
Jeff Gordon: The Rams could still land a veteran fill-in tackle, if the right one shakes loose. That is still a concern, even through Goldberg has had a nice camp.

kdunlap: I am a big believer that attitude, aggressivness and personality go along way on the football field. From what I see of Bulger he has neither. He looks like the dog that gets beat by his owner each day so he automatically cowers when he sees him.
I think the rest of the team and especially the offense feeds off this lack of attitude, aggressivness the lacks.

Is he different behind the scenes with teammates?
Jeff Gordon: He is trying to become more assertive, now that Bruce and Faulk are long gone. But his NOT a gung-ho, outgoing guy by nature.

steve665: Jeff-If I had a contract to do a job,and I refused to do the job,I would be taken to court to be sued for breach of contract. Why can't the Rams do that to Steve Jackson? He signed a contract to play for the Rams for a set amount of time for a set salary. What gaves? Also if I was a Rams fan,and I had to paid full price to see that mess at the Dome last Saturday I would consider starting a class action lawsuit against the Rams and the NFL.-PS-Gave the Rams some green spray paint so they could spiffy up that "turf?" at the Tomb of Gloom.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams can't sue the guy, obviously, but they can fine him. And the franchise can't threaten him with the franchise tag and take away its offered long-term extension. The team has leverage.

pj: Mckee has drawn some interest, LA and Buffalo have been mentioned. he might not be a great player, & surely isnt worth what we are paying him, but he is a valuable shot blocker. who do you see on the team that will fill his skates if he departs?
Jeff Gordon: On the stay-at-home front, Polak is the next guy to step in. Also, Jackman and Brewer have to be better. They are getting paid and they have to solidify the group.

Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff and Thank You for taking my question. After spending most of the summer wondering what happen to the Blues. Their lack of movements. I think I now see what direction they are moving in. Rather than spending more money on over priced free agents. They are going to make their players earn their pay. If the season does not go well this year. They have a bunch of veterans they can off load and we have a bunch of young players waiting for a chance. This summers draft is going to good again. If we don't fail. Then the Blues have a good season and we keep moving forward. I think the first part is going to happen but we will see. Let me know what you thinking the Blues chances are this season? What direction do you think they are heading?
Thank You
Scott
Jeff Gordon: i like the Blues' course. Now Murray has to speed the player development. Perron, Oshie, Berglund -- this guys have to arrive soon. Stempniak has to bounce back. E. Johnson must become a 50-point defenseman. Wagner has to become a solid puck moving defenseman. Backes must become a solid power forward.

TUG MAGRAW: Hello Jeff,

It seems to me that the Rams will have a similiar season to last year. They don't seem to be very tough (physical) and I don't think Coach Linehan is a fiery kind of coach to get the players fired up. I hear the practices aren't very hard and I think the Rams will just be another opponent for other teams to pad their record and Scott won't last the season as head coach. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are trying to be more physical. If there lines stay reasonably healthy, you'll see that this year. That part of their game was much better Saturday night. But, no, Scott isn't a fiery motivator. That will have to come from veteran players and other coaches.

jwbrown518: Gordo, the Rams look, sound and feel horrible again this year. Is the major problem an ownership crisis, in that the new owners don't much care about football and don't care whether the team remains in St. Louis?
Jeff Gordon: Give Chip time. He cares. And if he can't afford to keep the team - which could be the case -- I would expect him to find a good owner to buy in. Don't blame Chip for the 3-13.

pj: with the cards shedding "dead payroll" after the year and freeing up possibly around 1/3 of the payroll, who are some names on your list you want to see in cardinal red for next season?
Jeff Gordon: Job one: Keeping Lohse and/or Looper for the rotation.
Job two: Lock in Ludwick and Ankiel for the long haul.
Job three: find a shortstop (Cabrera?) and a LH reliever (Fuentes?).

All of it is doable with the money available.

Pat: Gordo!
Mckee apparently is generating some interest around the league, at least in the rumor mill. have you heard anything from credible sources? what do you think the chances are that he will be traded?
Jeff Gordon: It's just speculation. The Blues like him, but moving his payroll would give the organization the flexibility to beef up the offense. McKee is well respected and he is more attractive two years into his deal.

Ryan: I want to see the Blues trade McKee. When we initially signed him from Buffalo, I thought he was a giant steal. However, after one injury riddled season, and a sub-par injury free season, I think McKee's time with the Blues should be coming to an end. I understand that if the Blues could have gotten rid of him at the trade deadline last season they would have, but are there no takers in the NHL for a shot blocking D-Man that the Blues could negotiate something with? L.A. needs D-men and salaray, Toronto needs defensive help, the Lightning have a young D-squad that could use veteran help. Any chance the Blues move McKee before the season opens, Gordo?
Jeff Gordon: Those could be options for Jay elsewhere. With the Blues bucking up for still another D-man (Pietrangelo) after spending big on Jackman, it's tough to keep them all.

Oldgeek: Jeff,
Do you think Bulger's funk the first two games is a result of the beating he too last year? How long do you think the Rams will give him to snap out of it?
Thanks
Oldgeek
Jeff Gordon: You would hope there is no residual impact from that, because then it would be time to consider Green.

Kenny H.: Hey Gordo,
Isn't it clear that the Rams will get SJ signed if he will just report? He seems like such a headcase to me. Maybe the Rams should just bench him for the first several games while he gets into shape. What? Without him are they going to lose 14 or 15 games instead of 13? I realize the guy is a stud, but it's stupid that he won't show up and get things moving. The Rams should just trade him for some players/picks. Teams clearly don't need a RB of his caliber to win it all, nor do they need a personality like his bringing people down. Besides, only fools overpay for running backs in this new era of football. One teams cast off is another team's Ryan Grant/Earnest Graham/Mike Bell/Chester Taylor/etc.
Jeff Gordon: Jackson IS a rare talent. If the team can resolve this matter this week, we'll see that during this season. Trading him won't get a good enough return.

Pat: Ank hasn't quite looked the same since his return, do you believe his ab strain is still bothering him?
Jeff Gordon: Could be, which is why I wasn't a fan of him playing through the injury. Nothing wrong with the 15-day disabled list, especially given this team's offensive depth.

zimmy: what's the point of warning the teams if the very next thing they hit lopez( i think it was) only to have nothing done about it?
Jeff Gordon: I agree, but what can you do about it? It's always a judgment call for the umps.

aaron: Hey there sir! Thanks again for all the wisdom!

I noticed that Yorman Rodriguez was signed by the Reds this past weekend and I was curious how close (if at all) were we to signing this kid? Are we getting closer to developing better cred with yougsters in the Int'l FA market? I feel like teams like the A's and Reds always seem to start with a leg up on us with these kids.
thanks!
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have made a lot of progress there, but there are very late into the game. Give them a couple of years and they will get more than their share.

JP: 1) Does Steven Jackson want to be a Ram or not?
2) Has Marc Bulger "lost it" ot just not in sync yet.....in your opinion?
3) It's high time to cut our losses on Klopenstein, it's a cut throat
business, either your getting it done or your not. He's not! He can't catch,
he's a below average blocker (Minor TD included) and he's SOFT!
4) Any possible scenario you can envision us beating Philly in week 1.
Eagles-Weaknesses?

Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Too soon to wrote off Jackson's loyalty or Bulger's ability. Let's see how the next two weeks play out.

Klopfenstein got high marks from Linehan Saturday, so he'll be around for a while.

As for the Philly game, they will be big underdogs. A lot of experts like them to win 11 or 12 this year.

stlfan4189: How much payroll will Cardinals have next season? With that amount of payroll and the current contracts, how much will that leave us to make a free agent acquisition? I want to get facts straight before I make an opinion of whether the cardinals are really being cheap or going to full extent of their financial power.
Jeff Gordon: There is more than $30 million in expiring contracts, but a big chunk of that could go to keep and/or extend current players. Don't expect huge forays into free agency, with the need to keep the current group as intact as possible.

stlfan4189: How concerned are you about Mizzou's OL turnover from last year? How do you expect the season to unfold? I personally think if we get by Illinois then we will be primed for something special just judging off what I have heard about the defense but part of that may be do the OL not really being that good.
Jeff Gordon: You never know how good a replacement OL really is until the team plays for real. And playing Illinois is as real as it gets. You're right -- if the Tigers win that game, they will have plenty of time to build confidence and gain experience.

owen: should the rams look at making a trade for a qb that could possibly play this year.bulger reminds me of jim everett.once a qb is scare of the pass rush it is hard for them to get over.it would probadly help if steven jackson was back, that way defenses would concentrate on him.dante culpepper is still not signed.also there is beck who could be available in miami.trent green i believe has the courage to stand in there but physically will not hold up.
Jeff Gordon: Courage is is not the issue. If he was afraid, he would have quit many cracked ribs ago. But if he is physically battered, he isn't going to be the same guy. It happened to Warner too. And it's happened to Green.

Jeff F: Hi Jeff. Thanks for all your great work and these chats every Monday. It seems clear that the Marlins will look to deal Dan Uggla this offseason (among others). What would it take for the Cards to obtain him? They're in need of an impact bat, especially from the right side and anything that improves the middle infield is welcomed. Thanks again.
Jeff Gordon: How about moving Ankiel and one of the pitchers not named Perez? Rick will be tough to lock in long-term with Boras as his agent. Rick would be a great long-term Cardinal, but at some point something has to give.

stlfan4189: Do you believe Tye Hill, OJ Atogwe, Carracker and Adeyanju can improve enough to make a difference to help the rams become respectable. It is pretty evident early on the offense be just flat anemic. I pointed out those players and you could even add in clifton ryan and Johnathon Wade because these were the young players recently drafted who were supposed to help revitalize the defense. I am putting all hope any successful rams season in the defense, which may not be good with the Titans game. I know they looked better with San Diego but with LT its hardly something to base yourself off of. What are your thoughts about those players and what sort of record do you see us having?
Jeff Gordon: Carriker has nice upside, as does Victor. Those four are critical to the team this year. So is Culberson, Bartell, Long . . . really, they are all critical. This team has to make a stand and it has to start on defense. This is still the NFL.

zimmy: are there any waiver deadline players of interest for the cards? I think heard Washburn was waived? did we have no interest in him or did he not get down to us? anybody else out there?
Jeff Gordon: Contrary to published reports, the Cards did not bid on Washburn. They like what they have and they don't want his '09 salary.

mike: Hey Jeff
What is the likelihood of moving Izzy or Franklin? What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Izzy's deal is up after this year, so that will be that. Franklin has obvious value as a set-up guy.

stlfan4189: Do you feel the blues are ready to make a playoff run? I kind of feel like we may need one more strong prospect ideally a forward who can score to counter act what appears to be a very good defense in the makings? Again, what are your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues will hang around this year, but a LOT has to go well to get this team into postseason play. The conference is very tough.

Jonathan: Hi JP,
Long Time Rams fan,
Do you believe JH's Defense will look more like this week's D or
was it just an illusion due to the Chargers playing hardly any starters.
Our O line looked great in running the ball and even though Bulger got manhandled, they looked better in pass blocking. I liked what I saw out of Lecky, do you think he could beat out Romnberg?
Thanks JP
Jeff Gordon: If Romberg's hand heals, I'd expect him to start. Leckey has been a pleasant surprise, though. The Rams D will be better this year, but don't judge it by what happened with the Chargers scrubs.

Jonathan: Linehan's not really considering Berlin over Gradkowski is he? Saw Berlin in College and he looked horrible then. The Cincy game with Berlin was painful to watch.
Thanks JP
Jeff Gordon: That's why Bruce is here. And Bruce keeps playing like he did in Week 2, he will have a good shot at the job. The competition is pretty hot right now.

Mark C: Hey Gordo!
I have to say I have a real concern about Bulger. He is not the same; you can see it in his face. He already looks defeated and I’m going to make a comment that nobody has yet. Bulger is the only QB in the NFL that looks like he has never lifted any weights. He has the thinnest legs, arms and resembles the marathon runners at Beijing. So how can he take even the lightest hit? When Trent came in even for just a few plays, the offense came to life. In the second half our other QB’s at least looked like they were fighting to win. At what point does the coach recognize a player that has lost his stuff and is afraid to step up and lead this team? I believe that if Trent had started, we would have scored.

I was impressed with our defense; for the most part they looked very good. I wonder why the Rams seem to have so many injury pronged players. I know other teams have injuries as well, but not the same players year after year. We seem to have a lot of guys that have potential, work hard during the off season, come into camp, the hype is great and then they go down with a season ending injury at the start or early part of the season year after year.
Jeff Gordon: Setterstrom is certainly injury prone and we've probably seen the last of him. Otherwise, it's just part of playing football. Every team has issues.

Marc always looks kind of hangdog, so he gets a tough rap from the fans. The body language is misleading. I believe he is more into it than he seems.

Jonathan: James Hall has outplayed Long in two pre-seasons games. Any chance he is the opening day DE with Glover, Carriker and Little? I hope I'm wrong, but Long looks alot like Trevor Johnson with great hustle and no impact.
Thanks JP
Jeff Gordon: Hall is a nice player when healthy. The guy you saw Saturday is the guy the Rams signed. Long will still play the Lion's share, but Hall could move around and play a lot of pass rushing situations.

Tom: Jeff, as a former Antler, you've gotta be excited about this season!

Will Mizzou be ready for the Illini... I think if Juice played the entire game last year, the Illini would have won?

Will Mizzou live up to expectations? I fear possible let downs versus Illini. Also, they haven't won in Nebraska in 30 years!

I say they win the North and I think with the home field advantage they finally get the Sooner off their back.

I'd like to get your thoughts.

Thank!
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the Tigers dodged one against Illinois last year.

If they get past that game, they can build momentum. Nebraska will be tougher with the coaching change and the game at Texas will be tougher, but I'll look for at least 10 victories overall. History doesn't matter so much when a team can make plays.

bassrecord: Gordo. Since camp started to date what is the most significant positive and most significant Ram negative you've seen?

Thanks John
Jeff Gordon: Positive: The O-line, with the rookies and Leckey coming along on the inside.
Negative: Injuries (Setterstrom, King), Bulger's slow start, Long's slow start.

steele: hey again!

How many guys do you think get the call in Spetember for the Cards? Who do you think will/won't, to me, I see the following...
Randy and Ron Flores
Motte
Boggs (did he learn from hsi mistakes)
maybe Worrell (did he learn anything?)
maybe Wasdin (veteran and has been solid)
Ryan
Barden
Phelps
maybe Freese (spell Glaus)
Stavy

to me that seems like all the deserving guys...we woudl have to make room for Wasdin/Phelps/Barden/Freese/Ron/Motte? on the 40, but don't we have room with Rico being taken off/Duncan to the 60day/Mulder to the 60 day/Clement gone/ and any other spots that i can't think of...whadda ya think?
Jeff Gordon: Barden might bumped by Lopez, who has been lights out.
Motte for sure has to come up. Ryan too. And Phelps. I'd like to see Rasmus, to get a head start on next year, but he has to be healthy.
As for either Flores, I dunno . . . how good are they throwing?

Brian: Jeff,

I have never been big on Mark Bulger, but his mind is clearly somewhere else. At the very least I wish he would show emotion. This team needs a lot of help due to its inability and coaching or lack there of, but for your quarterback not to be a leader, they are destined for continued failure.

thanks,

Brian
Jeff Gordon: Now would be a good time for him to channel his inner Favre, if he has one.

Jeff Gordon: Compare Marc's body to Gradkowski -- now there is a load! He looks like an mixed martial artist.

Kiko: I understand we need to keep our starters healthy, but I think we have to leave them in these pre-season games until they score a TD (I don't care if they play all 8 qtrs we have left) once they score they can can take a seat.

Waiting until the season starts to get the starters to play for a TD is too late in my opinion, what do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Agreed!

Michael Kent: Jeff ...

I noticed that there was a recent chain reaction of promotions among the Cards' infielder corps in the minors. Tyler Greene moved from Springfield to Memphis, Donovan Solano from Palm Beach to Springfield, and Pete Kozma from Quad Cities to Palm Beach. Do you feel like these were legitimately earned promotions or were they more out of necessity when Brian Barden took time off to play for the U.S. Olympics team? A lot has been written about Kozma, but what's your take on Greene and Solano?

Also, any chance that Brett Wallace could get promoted before season's end? He's been knocking the cover off the ball ever since he landed in the Quad Cities earlier this summer. If not, then do you think he starts next year at Palm Beach or Springfield?

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Wallace ought to jump to Springfield ASAP. He could be in the big leagues by the end of next year.

Greene earned his jump to Memphis with some hot hitting. Good for him, because it was overdue. Kozma earned his move up with a nice surge at the plate. Barden's Olympic move is a non-factor, since Ryan got dumped down from the majors for a few weeks.

Petey123: Jeff, your prediction on the rams staying in St. Louis long term? How do you see it working out?
Jeff Gordon: Pull for Rush Limbaugh to buy the team. He'd keep it here long term. Ownership is the key -- even more so than the stadium.

That looks like it for now! See you next week!
