Paul II: Why isn't Colby Rasmus coming up this September? If for nothing else, wouldn't the exposure playing at the Big League level be an advantage for him next year?

Paul II
Jeff Gordon: In retrospect, given all the injuries here, it would have been nice to see him. But he had to overcome his own injuries and the club didn't want to start his clock toward free agency unless he would play a lot. At the end of August, that seemed unlikely. Also, Tony felt strongly that Colby didn't earn the promotion with his play. But Arizona promoted a guy out of the rookie league because he is a top prospect.

Tackleberry: When the Cards are making their list and checking it twice this winter can they add to the need category: Veteran bat that doesn't wilt versus lefties? I am so sick of watching this club get dominated by left-handed pitching. In fact, they need to identify a couple guys that can be used to counter left-handers. Let '08 be the last season of the built-in excuse of "we don't hit lefties well."
Jeff Gordon: Here, here. I like what Mather would add to the bench, but good bats at SS and 2B could help address this issue. This group has too many lefties in the OF.

Jayman: Gordo Ive seen alot prospect talk about Cards minor leagers, but one they never talk about is PJ Walters...he has 122k in 122 innings and he's only 23 years old, whats the deal.
Jeff Gordon: Junkballer! Slow, slower and slowest. But he knows what he is doing, so he could reach the bigs.

tim: With Pujols possibly getting surgery soon do you see the Cards possibly going back after Holliday? I know hes costly but he would deffinitly keep our offense going long enough to keep us in it and then when Pujols gets back our offense would be deadly.
Jeff Gordon: I don't see the large investment in an outfielder with so many other needs -- relief pitching, starting pitching, SS, 2B. The Cards have a ton of OFs, including Wallace (if he can play put there).

tim: Do you think Carpenter will ever be the same? I'll be honest I just dont see it hes basically missed 2 years and is 33 but id be more thatn happy to be told wrong.
Jeff Gordon: Good question. There aren't a lot of miles on that arm, relatively speaking, but the assortment of injuries is a huge concern.

tim: Say the Cards let both Lohse and Looper walk. Do you think they would pick up Burnett AND someone like Oliver perez or Derik Lowe or is that to expensive?
Jeff Gordon: Too expensive. That is why keeping one of those guys would really help. Lowe would be a nice get, but he won't come cheap in today's market. Burnett could break the bank, with the Yankees looking to throw money around.

mr. optomist: hey gordo,do you think we could get a 1st round draft choice for any one player on the rams current team....besides dante hall or alex baron?
Jeff Gordon: No way. First-round picks are hard to acquire. Bailouts don't yield much in the NFL, which is why you don't see them.

tim: If you were Mo which closer would you focus your attention on this offseason K-rod or Fuentes? what dirction do you think the Cards will go?
Jeff Gordon: Fuentes. K-Rod will cost much more and there will be long-term durability concerns. Fuentes fills two needs, closer and lefty.

Rich: With the unfolding debacle that is the Rams 2008 season at one point is there going to start being real accountability?

When are under-performing veterans like Incognito, Hall, Chavous, and Hill going to start riding the pine?

And when does the Scott Linehan/Jim Haslett watch start? The te

Thanks for hosting these chats.

Rich
Jeff Gordon: If you bench Incognito, who plays? Goldberg when Bell returns? That solves nothing.

tim: Your guess. Whos at second and shortstop next year?
Jeff Gordon: I'd vote for Renteria and Lopez, but only if the team spent the money to keep Ludwick and Ankiel long-term and shore up the pitching.

ram4life: My dad always told me to never "hustle backwards". When you've got a good thing going, keep it going. Never sabotage yourself. With that in mind Gordo, give me your professional opinion of why did we hand the keys to the "GSOT" to this obviously inept signal caller? When the 49ers changed coaches they didnt miss a beat, neither did Dallas. We fell too far too fast. Fans, like myself, who've been fans of this team for 30 years or better cant fathom why we cant figure out how to put a consistent winner on the field. Every team has some lean years, but, i feel we deserve better, after a decade of losing, than 3 years of competitive football.
Jeff Gordon: Maintaining a winning franchise in the NFL is very difficult. The Rams failed the test for a ton of reasons, starting with Mike Martz's own deterioration. It has gone downhill from there.

cardsnumber7: Why is Dante Hall here?
another drop for a first down

Our Offensive line gives a new meaning to "Offensive"
Our line last year was better and they were horrible.
Jeff Gordon: This line is better. It has played two superior defensive teams. Last year's line against those two defenses would have gotten people killed.

As for Hall, good question.

cardsnumber7: Hey Gordo,
Can we please get Avery and Burton in? Why do you think Burton is not getting in there. Do they think he is not ready?
Please no more Dante Hall. Please.

Thanks
Todd W.
Jeff Gordon: Now that Avery is getting healthier, I'm with you. But Looker is earning his reps.

2deep: I have been a rams fan for 30 years and i don't under stand why the rams don't spend good money to go get good players. My question is why don't the rams get rid of there coach because to me his action look like he doesn't want to be there. Out of all the playes he runs i could get playes fom madden and win a game. Why don't he try the 1999 to 2000 play book look like it work to me.
Jeff Gordon: Get Kurt Warner back, then you can run the 2001 playbook.

Ken the seasons over and let's look forward to 2009: I am a PSL owner from the begginning. I have club seats. They are expensive but up ubtil the last two yesrs they were worth it. This is about entertainment and cost of the same. I would rather stay home and get NFL Direct TV package then waste my time and money watching what can only be desribed as wretched football. It reminds me of the dark ages of Missouri football.

I will not renew unless Zygmut is gone; Linehan is gone; Shaw is gone. The solution for now is easy. Fire Zygmut; Fire Linehan; Demote Shaw to the Rosenblooms family attorney exclusively. Turn the franchise over to Devaney on an interim basis. Turn the team over to an interim coach preferably from the outside but if not posssible give it to Haslett. The season is gone and we got 14 games to see if he has anything left in the tank, for some reason I think he does and now is the time to find out. AS for Dick Vermeil, that silly endorsement of Zygmut on the big screen at the game was all I had to hear to disqualify him unless he agrees that Zygmut must go now.

My question to you is not whether anything will be done but does ownership understand that they are destroying the fan base with this incompetance? If so why won't they do something? If they are as smart as they are protrayed by the media why have they not acted?

Move over Woody Widenhofer and Bob Stull and make room for Linehan in the Missouri hall of shame coaching section.
Jeff Gordon: Ah, Woody's Wagon. Bad times. But this is right up there. Where do where house this Hall of Shame?

Newkirk: Jeff,

How long might it realistically take to fix the mess that is the Rams right now? My biggest complaint is with the long list of lousy personel decisions made over the last 3 years.

Just a few examples: High draft picks spent on Tye Hill (note, we passed on Jay Cutler to get this guy - oh yeah, I think we also got D Byrd with the trade-down pick on this one!), Brian Leonard, Wroten, Klopenstein, Donnie Avery, Carriker (good player, but forced into the wrong role). We've let Isaac go, signed Drew Bennett, let Pickett go. There are plenty more...

How long does it take to fix this? 2 years? 5 years? More?
Jeff Gordon: With the right leadership, two years of work could yield a playoff contender. There are more good players here than you think.

Cooper0413: Gordo,

Every off-season we get all excited about the potential free-agent signings and every off-season we sit and watch the top line guys sign elsewhere while the Cardinals pick up the Matt Clements of the world. What do you think the odds of the Cardinals actually becoming agressive and signing some quality help is? Also, what are the odds of seeing Mulder and/or Izzy back in STL next season?

Thanks for all your hard work!
Brian
Jeff Gordon: No chance of Izzy or Mulder, unless they come back on a tryout basis with bonus-driven compensation.

Don't get excited about free agency because that is not how these regime will operate. Look for some additions, but the organization will still invest its money in player development first. And that is how it should be.

nms: Gordo, can you please explain to me why David Freese wasn't called up? Also, with an organization teaming with outfielders why are we subjected to Aaron Miles playing left and right field?
Jeff Gordon: Same deal as Rasmus, sort of. The franchise doesn't want to start his clock toward free agency this year. But,yes, it would have nice to see him at third with Glaus out.

Ted: In your opinion, who is to blame for what seems like the rash of Cardinal players who tend to play moderate injuries into major injuries? Rolen, Duncan, Garcia, Izzy, Carp, Ankiel... the list seems to run on ad nauseum. Does the blame fall on the players, the medical staff, or is it organizational philosophy? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Some of it is just bad luck. But I'll say this: Nothing good can come from playing guys (like Ankiel) with nagging injuries.

Glass Half-Full: I just don't get all the negativity surrounding the Cards all of a sudden.. Going into the season, NOBODY thought they'd even be in contention this late. (Even though they've faded)... What team can withstand all the negativity, injuries, etc., that this team has? That all starts with LaRussa. The man has kept this team headed in the right direction when many, many others would've given up. He should be praised for his work the last two years...Im pretty psyched for '09. (Hopefully) Healthy Carp, Waino, Wellemeyer as 1-3, with maybe Lohse as a solid 1-4. Outfield is shaping up nice, Molina is a stud behind the plate, Albert is Albert, kids in the pen are growing up. ALOT to like! That said, they do need a power-hitting SS or 2nd. I live in KC, and TRUST ME, every baseball fan in this city would GLADLY switch franchises any day.
Jeff Gordon: You are right. The Cards used a lot of kids and most of them showed something. The organization moved forward in many ways. And now there is a lot of dead money leaving the payroll.

HEG: Gordo if one is a true Mo. sports enthusiast you have one team to cheer for at this time the Missouri Tigers; go Mizzou; the Rams have no direction what-so-ever; the only plus from yesterday's game was the kicker's; but to no avail when the punter pinned the Giant's back on numerous occassions the defense failed miserably; at this rate the scalpers should sign-up for unemployment benefits for the Ram's remaining home games; Re; the Cardinals they should take the next 2 weeks off and then about 2/3 of the roster should retire; the cards would need to fill 4 or 5 spots on the starting line-up for the 09 season; again I reiterate go MIZZOU!
Jeff Gordon: Two-thirds of the Cards roster doesn't need to retire. If Lopez can play second, then they need only a good offensive shortstop for next year -- along with the obvious pitching and relief needs.

Will: What group of prostects would it take to get Matt Holliday. All of the teams current outfielders have preformed well when they were healthy, but none of them represent the kind of "impact bat" we need behind Pujols I bet other teams would not be as willing to walk Pujols with 1st base open if Holliday was behing him.
Jeff Gordon: Two problems: One, the Rockies would want a combo of blue-chip prospects -- Rasmus, Anderson, McClellan or Perez -- and then the Cards would have to lock him into a $20 million per year deal. Rasmus, by comparison, will be virtually free for the next few years.

redbirdswin: What's the story with the relationship between Colby Rasmus and the front office? Is it more likely that he is offered to teams during the offseason now that he wasn't called up and he decided not to play in the AFL?
Jeff Gordon: Rasmus is 22 years old and a top position player prospect. The Cards could trade him, of course, but I don't see them doing so unless they get a 22-year future all-star caliber shortstop of starting pitcher in return.

Ben: Jeff,
After Linehan is gone, probably bye week. Do you think that there is a remote chance that Dick Vermeil would babysit the team for at least the rest of the season. I say Vermeil because he is familiar with the organization and knows Saunders, is a fan favorite and knows how to motivate his players. He has to feel bad for the fans of St. Louis.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: A lot of love for Vermeil out there. Never say never, but this turnaround is a huge job. It could take this year, plus two more. Does Dick have that in him?

old cowboy: Gordo, How is it, in your opinion, that veterans of this Rams football team forget how to play their position? Last week SL stated that they needed to go back to basics, after playing this game for most of their lives and an entire pre-season, how is it that they need to go back to basics???? And could you ask SL just why he thought Madison Hedgecock was not the right fit for this team? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Good question about the veterans. How could they not play their positions correctly? As for Hedgecock, that is just of many blunders made by Scott and his various assistants.

Paul: For the second year in a row it looks like the table will be set for the blues to showcase themselves and win back the casual STL sports fan. As a life long fan I'm at every game anyway but do you think we'll pack the house even more than last year? I hope so!

Also, could you set my DVR to record the FSN Blues special tonight? I won't be home from work in time to catch it. I'll leave the key under the doormat. Thanks

GO BLUES!
Jeff Gordon: The Blues will see attendance gains, but this team won't be a juggernaut and the economy is terrible, So it will be a challenge to fill the house.

George M.: So we draft Greco in the 3rd round to push Barron and be insurance against a Pace injury. We announce in training camp he can't play tackle, he's a guard. This week, we need a guard, and we use Adam Goldberg, a backup tackle who hasn't had a snap at guard all year, preseason or regular season, as Greco and our other rookie backup guard watch the action from the bench?

Is it too early for the bust lable?
Jeff Gordon: It's too early for that, but it is disappointing that Greco can't play tackle. That was really unfortunate, since there wasn't a good Plan B.

chadbo: Jeff,

I am a frustrated Rams season ticket holder. I drive 3 hours each way to see a game. Do you think the ownership will make the token getsure to the fan base and the players of firing Linehan? I know he is not the only problem (Zygmut, players) and I know the assistant coaches don't really deserve to be head coaches either, but enough is enough. I just can't believe this team is THAT bad. So what do you think, will he be fired this week, the bye week, or not until the end of the season? I really don't want to put my tickets on sale on the internet for the other teams fans to buy but I can't support this regime much longer.

Thanks,
CB in Peoria
Jeff Gordon: This franchise needs top to bottom change. To salvage what's left of this season, but big changes need to be made,

RamsAtLast: Gordo: If Avery (and Burton) were available to play, why just a cameo appearance for Avery in the last 5 minutes? I say release Dante Hall, call up Stanley, bench Looker, and let the kids play!! Our current starting wideouts (and that includes Holt) can't get separation, why can't the coaching staff see this?

Secondly, is the rumor true about Little and Looker blowing up at their teammates after the game? Can you confirm what was said (without the expletives)? Might make good reading for us frustrated fans...Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Again, Looker earned his reps. He is trying to compete -- and that means acting like a veteran in the locker room, too. Look for more in STLToday.com on what might or might not have happened in the room after the game.

Brian: I am not going to state the obvious and hate on the coach, team etc. I want to commend the Giants and their draft personnel. How about Justin Tuck for example? That guy is amazing and if I remember right he wasn't drafted until round 3 or higher. It just shows how bad this organization is from top to bottom. 1st wide receiver taken is Avery from Houston. Once the rams made that pick, I knew things would not end up well this year.

I assume they threw a dart at a board full of wide receivers and it happened to land on Avery?
Jeff Gordon: There were a lot of reasons to pick Avery and it is certainly too easy to write him off. We saw, briefly, what he could do during the preseason. Tuck was a good get for the Giants, for sure, but he went to a better organization. That helps speed the development.

Craig: Jeff,

How about we merge teams with Seattle? I'm sure between the two of us, we could have at least one mediocre to slightly above average team. Too bad Mike Holmgren would only be around one year. But that's okay, I find the West Coast Offense to be a little bit boring.

Just a thought. It worked for Bank of America and Merrill Lynch.
Jeff Gordon: Well-played! The Seahawks would love to have Dane Looker, for instance.

bird_man: Gordo,

Do you honestly see LaRussa and Duncan returning to the Cardinals next season, or do you see LaRussa as a GM somewhere with Duncan along side?
Jeff Gordon: I can't imagine TLR is well-suited to be a GM -- or all that hot about doing it. They knock this team isn't far from being as good as in '06 again.

bfulton: Lots of calls for firing Rams coach and management. Isn't the biggest bar to a move, however, is that Rosenbloom has to position the team for a sale? Who would want to buy the team that's stuck with contracts for new coaches and new executives that they didn't pick themselves?
Jeff Gordon: NFL teams seldom come up for sale. There would be heavy bidding for the Rams if Chip put the team up for sale. And NFL teams can be turned in a couple years, if there is dramatic change at the top.

L King: All of you reporters need to stop with all this Linehan must quit crap to justify why Chip needs to show you he is in charge. We are the same sorry team we were last year maybe worse but trying to start a uprising after every reporter called Petrino a scab for quitting less than a year ago. So you can change now that it helps a homer justify why the Rams are sorry it would impress me more to finish the season then clean house from top to bottom. This spur of the moment crap is not going to change anything about what is happening now we will not just go to the top of the heap and become SB contenders, we are what we are and a change now will not stop this even for your own selfish reasons to show you who's the boss. So stop and grow up. Report what is happening and what you think can happen at the end of the season. Me personally I would love to have the first pick and a new roster to build with a new coach to get a fresh start.
Jeff Gordon: Changing things now would be more PR than anything, since this team IS what it is. I get that. But Linehan mentions "accountability" every week, but that rings hollow if this team conducts business as usual for 14 more weeks.

Crazy_Legs: Gordo, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. The lack of defense if frustrating. As I sat at the Pub yesterday watching all the games I can't help but notice that other teams will have 8 or 9 guys in the box. Sometimes you will see all 11 guys on the screen. You never know who is dropping back and who’s coming. When I watch the Rams D we generally have 4 guys on the line with too much space between them, 2 to 3 LB's 5 yards from the line of scrimmage (too far off the line if you ask me) and the rest of the guys drop back into a mix of zone coverage and man to man. The scheme allows for too much space between our defenders and the opposing receivers. On running plays they seals of the defensive linemen and have no issues taking on the LB's. It is obvious the scheme does not work. When can we expect some type of adjustments to the defense? I find it hard to believe all the players on D are that bad. Will it take Haslet’s removal for change to happen or can we expect Linehan to step in and make the changes necessary.
Jeff Gordon: I think there are bigger issues than pre-snap spacing. Jim can mix things up all he wants, but the players still have to do the basic things right and have the proper frame of mind. Fundamental breakdowns and mental/emotional weakness are bigger issues.

bfulton: In 1999, the Rams got new O-coordiantor Mike Martz, star RB Marshall Faulk, new WR Torry Holt, new QB Trent Green and won the Superbowl. In 2008, the Rams got new O-Coordinator Al Saunders, resigned star RB Steven Jackson, got two new WRs Donnie Avery and Kennan Burton and QB Trent Green but may lose all 16 games. Why the difference?
Jeff Gordon: The '99 had an incredibly easy schedule which allowed the Rams to gain momentum early. They stayed injury free and had great offensive line chemistry. Bruce was in his prime. Holt was a high-end addition. Martz had a cutting-edge offense. Many differences. We could go on and on.

Jason: Gordo, you rock and that's all there is to it!!

You know who else rocks? Kurt Warner. He has got to be one of the most mentally strong guys out there to tough out those years of back up in NYC and Arizona and play like he has always played. Let's be honest, the Rams haven't been the same since Martz abandoned Warner and it seems like it's been downhill for the organization ever since. Fortunately for St. Louis Kurt continues to play and play well in Arizona giving us something to look forward to on Sundays. I couldn't be happier for him.

The Rams on the other hand could be very bad for a long period of time if moves aren't made soon. And by soon I mean TODAY. If the Rams are smart they oust Linehan, a high school coach playing dress-up on sundays, in favor of what has worked in Pittsburgh and Arizona - the hiring of a young coach. Lane Kiffin's days in Oakland are about done. (could be fired today) What about him? It's time for a move of some kind. The Cards and their record since the trade deadline know first hand how it feels when moves aren't made when they arguably should have been. A completely different situation that will yield the same result: Losses and angry fans. Funny how the two go together.

Thanks, Gordo.
Jeff Gordon: Rob Ryan seems ready to take over in Oakland. Why not Rex Ryan in St. Louis? His work for the Ravens D speaks for itself.

ram76fan: It seems to me that it all starts up front on both sides. They cant protect the QB and they cant get to QB. I mean should they start the rookies inside? It seems like they cant do worse. When is Romberg due back Leckey is just too small. It seems like all out stops form now on in what does Linehan have to lose?
Jeff Gordon: Good point. But Greco or Schuening at guard and move Richie to center. That would be a more stout group for sure.

kaeagles: Hey Gordo,

Now that the Cards are unoffically done do you see them allowing some of the unproven players (Ryan, Barton, Phelps, Stavinoha, Barden, etc) a chance to play more? Also, IYO what is Brad Thompson's future as a Cardinal?
Jeff Gordon: Phelps and Barden are just fringe guys, possible bench guys for next year, but I would like to see Barton and Stavinoha play for sure. Ryan too. What do they really have in those guys?

Richard: how long will it take the St.Louis sports teams to start spending some money on decent players.
Jeff Gordon: Like Pujols? Wainwright? Molina? Carpenter?

Jim: Sir: When Cardinal fans are treated to B-team lineups early in the season, one of the rationales is to keep the players fresh for September. And yet, 2008 finds the Redbirds playing worse in Sept. than in the previous five months for the sixth straight season. Over the last three seasons, they've played .525 ball until Sept., when they've collapsed to a .403 pace. Even in the two excellent seasons of 04-05, they played .649 pre- and .559 post-Aug.31. This past week has even witnessed a split-squad lineup or two. Since these Sunday lineups don't pay off in September, how about a "hard 162?"
Jeff Gordon: Resting guys early is still the way to go. But injuries happen, even when guys rest. And when teams fall out of the race, it's only natural to lose an edge.

Andy from UMSL: Who do you think is more to blame for the rams unsuccess the players or the coach linehan? I ask this because these are professional athletes and they should not need someone to inspire them. That should already be there. What do you think is different from two seasons ago?
Jeff Gordon: It's a combo of everything -- management, players and coaches. Right now there is a losing atmosphere and it's up to everybody to change it.

Mark Bammann: Hey Gordo,

Why isn't anybody talking about firing Haslett?! It's HIS forking defense isn't it? How does this worthless weenie get a free pass?

Thanks,

Mark
P.S. Where can you still get brown paper grocery bags, I need to cut some eye holes in them and take them to the next game...
Jeff Gordon: Jim's earlier work was quite good. And I bet if he moves to another team to be a coordinator, he will do quite well again. Remember, he didn't have final say on draft and personnel moves here.

Brian: Do you know how far out College teams book their schedules? The reason I am asking is due to Mizzou's light early schedule, will that hurt them at the end of the year if they remain unbeaten or have 1-loss? It seems to happen every year that a lesser know team moves down in the poll so someone like LSU can play in the title game.
Jeff Gordon: Mizzou eased up their schedule when it became apparent that the Tigers had real BCS hopes. The BCS does not reward tough schedules, as Mizzou discovered last year when KU went to a BCS bowl after playing a much softer schedule.

In fact, the current systems encourages teams in tough conference with conference title games to take it easy early.

Brian: What are your thoughts on offseason trades? Who and where? Does the fact that Colby Rasmus isn't playing winter ball mean he's on the outs with the Cardinals brass?
Jeff Gordon: It doesn't help him make the team out of spring training, that's for sure. But he is still an elite prospect. We'll see him next year unles "Mo" deals him for a stud young shortstop or star starting pitcher.

Mike Enkelmann: Hey Jeff,
Thanks for taking my question. What do you think is going on with Ty Hill? He looks absolutely terrible and wasn't his speed supposed to make up for his size? I guess we can just add this to the list of draft busts and will probably have to add another page soon. If I can remember right we chose Hill over A.Cromartie from San Diego and Cromartie went to the pro bowl last year. Nothing else would make sense when dealing with our Rams.
Jeff Gordon: Hill came in talking about being a Pro Bowler in his career. Now he is just trying to achieve respectability.

Frost: Hey Gordo,

I have absolutely no faith the Cards will be "Aggressive" this offseason. Let me say, I love the Cards, have been a fan since I was a Kid, and that's the tough part for me. I get a Pujols Pack every year. I want to see them do well and spend some money. The fact is, the front office has not done anything to show they are serious about giving Tony what he wants and needs to be competitive. 30 mill to spend this offseason and there are some actractive free agents. Am I wrong to think we are going to end up with just 1 or 2 second or third tier players?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will spend more than $100 million on next year's payroll. DeWitt and Mozeliak aren't going to be "aggressive" compared to the Yankees, who could top $200 million in payroll, But then look at the Yankees ticket prices. Do you want to pay those prices?

Ryan: Hey Gordo, who wins more games this year, the Blues or the Kings? The Kings, like the Blues, are rebuilding and have a really young squad to work with. I think you have to like the Kings offense as much, if not more, than you like the Blues'. The Blues will have better "D" and goaltending with Manny and Mason. What do you think, Gordo? As much as it pains me, I see the Blues fighting the Kings for the celler dweller this season. Am I forgetting about another team in our conference that will be as bad as L.A. and St. Louis?
Jeff Gordon: I like LA's offense, especially when the Kings spend some more money to reach the NHL salary floor. But for now, their goaltending isn't impressive at all. That is where the Blues have an edge.

The Cardinals might actually win the NFC West: Hey Gordo,

A couple of quick questions/comments. First of all, I wanted to get your take on why Adam Carriker was mostly silent on defense yesterday. I would think a first round pick in his second season would have made more of an impact. Do you think moving him to DE opposite Chris Long would help the Rams almost nonexistent pass rush? I don't know if we have any depth at defensive tackle after Ryan and Glover, and so that may not be a realistic option.

Secondly, there has been a lot of talk of the Cardinals getting a left-handed reliever this offseason (Fuentes or someone like him). I wanted to get your opinion on this, but my take is that you shouldn't overspend on the bullpen because of the injury risk and the unpredictability year to year (look at Sherill in Baltimore who everyone wanted to get and is now hurt). Why can't Tyler Johnson fill the left-handed specialist next year when he is back healthy? He would be a cheap in-house option and would let the Cardinals spend more money on a position player or starter, which I think would be a better allocation of resources.

Thanks for you thoughts.
Jeff Gordon: Carriker is a mystery, What is his best position? Is there a good fit for him here? Dunno.

If Tyler can pitch next year, great. But recent history tells you not to trust a return date on that guy. So, yes, the Rams have to look for high-end and mid-level help on that side of the 'pen.

Ryan: Is anyone else even a little concerned about the poor play of our youngsters at the Traverse City tourney? The Blues are relying on these kids to come in and save the franchise (granted, not for a couple of years yet), and they are getting beat by the young players from our division rivals. Am I the only one who takes that as a REALLY bad sign for the future?
Jeff Gordon: It's a bit early to write off the Blues' kids, Most of those guys won't be here any time soon -- and a number of them will never play for the Blues. Let's see why Oshie, Berglund, Junland and Pietrangelo do when paired with NHL-caliber players.

Bill Griesedieck: Jeff,

Well, we got a competitive game for about three quarters and then like last year, the wheels fell off. There are so many things to say and comment on, so here are a few quick takes:
• Our front seven on defense played decent for most of the game except for a few gashes
• Secondary is giving waay to much space to receivers on the line
• No passion...except for Long...he broke through with a sack
• Tye Hill is getting schooled...he was better last year?
• Haslett had a physical D in New Orleans...does he not have the players that he wants here? Teams feared his teams back then
• Linehan is not a motivator...I don't see that the team respects him
• Torry who?
• The only reason Dallas is Dallas..is because their O-line is massive...rams, not so much.
• we have a scary running back here, but even he cannot run through non-existent holes
• If we lose to seattle and the Bills and this town will turn on the team I promise you

your thoughts

Bill
Jeff Gordon: I agree with most of that and have commented on much of it. Hill is an enigma. Don't give on Holt, he is seeing lots of doubles. And, yes, the Rams need to be more physical on both sides of the line.

Petey123: Gordo, will the Rams make any major coaching or player changes this week?
Jeff Gordon: Never say never, but the front office didn't seem inclined to make a quick and dramatic move.

birdswin34: Whats the reasoning behind Mitchell Boggs sitting at home after a great campaign in AAA? Is he off the radar? Seems like after the last few starts, getting him some more experience for next year would have been valuble.
Jeff Gordon: Boggs got a good look earlier and is still high on the team list. Part of the issue is the unwillingness to put extra wear-and-tear on young hurlers. After all, both Parisi and Garcia will miss next after undergoing injuries.

redbirdswin: What will be the most "aggressive" move that Mozeliak makes during the offseason? I would throw a top of the line starting pitcher (Sabathia, Burnett) out of the mix immediately (based on the past), leaving a middle IF bat and LH relief (Fuentes) taking up the extra salary the Cards will possess. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: You're on it. We could see a move in the OF only if there is a trade that opens up a slot for another RH bat out there. But otherwise, the team needs to target its needs and spend accordingly.

VanRam: I don't think anyone doubts rumors and reports that Linehan has lost the players, but what about the coaching staff? Last season Haslett got the defense to play above its head, but this season... Is there infighting or even disagreement among the coaching staff?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, there are disagreements -- especially in the wake of this slow start. With all the wheels come off? We'll see. But it's headed that way.

wotownramsfan: gordo its time to fire linehan obviously. after faulk's comments last week do you think he would step in right now? this team needs a move in the front office and in the coaching staff. marshall would be a great move to bring people back to watch the team and i think he could do the job.
Jeff Gordon: Faulk is a smart guy, but would he put in the long, long hours to coach or fill the GM role? Or would his better role to be an Al MacInnis type?

bleedblu17: Hey Gordo,

What has the better chance of happening:

Mizzou winning the National Championship

or

The Rams going 0-16 this season?

Also, not sure if you keep up with anything that pertains to Mizzou BB recruiting, but is there anything new on Rivals #11 prospect Michael Snaer?
Jeff Gordon: I haven't followed that recruiting story, although it would be great to see Anderson close a big sale, He needs that to move the program back where it needs to be,

The Rams won't go 0-16. Too much talent. And Mizzou would have to beat Oklahoma AND a SEC team to win a national title. That is asking too much.

john: how much longer will st louis fans have to endure the embarrasment of scott linehans lack of coaching? can bulger lead a team? he looked hopeless.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams need to get Trent Green ready in case Marc Bulger can't get off his heels.

David: Hey Gordo,

If MLB games only lasted 7 innings, would the Cardinals be unstoppable?

Is it possible the Rams are the third favorite football team to watch in St. Louis, behind Mizzou and Captain Kurt's Arizona Cardinals?
Jeff Gordon: Go, Kurt, go!

kwenviro: would the Patriots coach stand by and let the team have 3 wins in 18 games or one td since game 12 of last year come on as a fan we spend alot of money at each game hotel, gas, food, team items like jersey, shirts, mugs, etc. and we pay our coaches and players millions of dollars to bring a good show to the dome well I want my wasted money back if upper management doesn't do something call Vermil call Cower, call a pee wee team coach for goodness sake this is beyond bad.

The Wyatt's in Kentucky
Jeff Gordon: If Belichick were here, he would have been pulled out all his espionage stops a long time ago.

eric: Hey Gordo,
In the land of hypotheticals, let me ask:

If Warner gets to 200 tds for his career (156 now), 30,000 yards (about 25K now), and leads Arizona to the playoffs, do you think he's HOF material? If not, what do you think it would take? Another SB? Another Pro Bowl?

Thanks Gordo!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Another Pro Bowl would help. His career rating is high and he is starting to get his career numbers onto the radar screen.

Dan: Jeff,

If you want to see another example of how awful the Rams are managed, just take a look at the salary cap. It’s downright UGLY. I have seen that the Rams have the 8th highest payroll in the NFL at $108 million. You can see it at the following website:
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/st.-louis-rams/salary

Just look at the top 4 salaries:

Marc Bulger: $17.5 mil (grossly overpaid)
Drew Bennett: $9.5 mil (needs no explanation)
Trent Green: $6.0 mil (backup QB)
Tye Hill: $5.7 mil (realistically, a 4th round draft pick)

This represents about 35% of the 8th highest payroll in the NFL. It does not matter who the head coach is, even if they start to make rational personnel decisions right now, there is going to be a 2-4 year cleansing period before you can start rebuilding.

And take a look at Brian Leonard at #23 with a salary of $1.4 mil and then look at Steven Jackson at #33 with a salary of $667,000...What's wrong with this picture? No wonder he was disgusted with his contract. Now they add Eddie Kennison at $2.7 million. I know this is short term, but it is just another red flag that proves how mis-directed this franchise is. In the last 2 years at the wide receiver position, they cut Bruce, Curtis, and McDonald, they sign Bennett, trade for Hall, they have drafted about 10 receivers including their second and third picks in this years draft and NOW they sign a street free agent and make him their second highest paid receiver...third if you count Drew Bennett.

Is there any wonder what is wrong? Do you think this team lacks direction?

Dan
Jeff Gordon: At least the team is not cheap, right? And, yes, the organization lacks direction.

Jeff Hill: On the Rams - Could part of the problem be that the coaches are too smart for the room? I wonder if the schemes they are trying to run (offense and defense) are too complex for some of the players to grasp. More than once over the past two years it appears that some players do not have a clue as to there responsibility on some of the plays. I sometimes think that some of the players just do not get it.
Jeff Gordon: If that's the case, that is sad. The Rams did look for smarts and character with the '08 draft, but there are a few knuckleheads from earlier drafts still on hand.

james arnold: Jeff:

It is extremely disappointing to see how the FO really dropped the ball on this team. I applaud the players effort but really when our GM and owner decided not to even try and help this season-- it was really a matter of time before they collapsed. My question is why doesn't pujols shut it down for the remaining games? second question--as a fan, i have heard over and over from this FO that they are going to make a move in the off-season, but nothing never happens, why should i even believe them again? is there any real chance of dimwitt actually allowing an acquisition for an impact player? or is this the same old song and dance?
Jeff Gordon: You didn't like the Rolen for Glaus deal? Or the Lohse signing? Expect more of the same this winter. The team has $30 million to spend and they will spend it to add or keep key players.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

We have asked you about Free Agency until you've gone blue in the face. I see this team making more impact in the trade market. That being said, what are some intriguing names that you think we can make a play for this offseason? I'm thinking of deals over the past couple years, like: Dan Haren to ARI, Doug Davis to ARI, Valverde to HOU, Lidge to PHI, Glaus to STL, etc.
Jeff Gordon: You are correct about the trade potential -- there a lot of outfielders to sift through. Some deals will have to happen.

Beth: Is is truly ALL up to the head coach to motivate players to play with heart put their thinking caps on? How can the head coach have the sole responsibility not to mention the power to bring this out of grown men with extraordinary talent receiving pay to play a game they supposedly love. Gordo, do you really hold Linehan responsible for the play in the first two game? And, is he the reason both offense and defense didn't perform, despite coordinators with excellent reputations and above average past performance? Is Linehan supposed to motivate them as well? Are they responsible for the men they "coordinate"? And, when does the responsibility fall on the ones actually playing the game?
Jeff Gordon: The whole atmosphere is the coach's responsibility, He has a LOT of control. And the atmosphere around this organization is weak.

lfulk1: Is it me or is this deal with Colby Rasmus getting out of hand? It seems to me that people either want to vilify Colby or vilify Tony in this chaotic situation. I must say that I agree with Colby and his decision to not play winter ball...especially since after last off season when he played winter ball, played extremely well in spring training, and yet was still kept in AAA. And the fact that even though he is the top prospect and great defensive center fielder, the Cardinals are choosing to use guys like Aaron Miles and Adam Kennedy in the outfield instead of calling him up. So he has learned that no matter how well he proves himself this off season, he probably will start in AAA no matter what. Is there really a feud between him and Tony? And will Mo try to appease Tony and go against the new philosophy?
Jeff Gordon: Colby is recovering from two injuries that derailed him last year. Getting healthy, to me, is more important that getting a few more at bats. He may have to start at Memphis as a result, but this is not a huge setback.

davulture24: With all the talk of pushing Linehan out of St. Louis, I'm wondering if this is even a possiblity this early in the season. Will the Head Office even consider making drastic changes this early in the season? And, if so, what is the chance that they would look into bringing a new head coach in from the outside to salvage this year. Many of us fans are wanting someone such as Marty Schottenheimer to step in and use this season as a step towards next year. I cannot recall a good example of an NFL team actually replacing a head coach with another quality HC from outside the team midseason, do you? Would Marty even be interested?
Jeff Gordon: Installing a new system on the fly, during a season, is nearly impossible.

rich: Jeff: What are the chances, pct. wise, that Linehan will be gone?
Also what are the odds on Zygmunt being axed?

thanks
Rich
Jeff Gordon: I'd say Jay is 50-50 and Scott is almost certain to go. This team would have to turn completely around and salvage the season to save Scott. Jay is vulnerable because of the potential sale.

Handsome Jimmy: How ya doin, Gordo?

Well, it looks like the marriage between the Rams and Scott Linehan is just not quite working out. I imagine that Scott is a really nice guy that is just in over his head in the NFL head coaching ranks. What are the chances that either side in this marriage seeks a divorce before the bye week? I would bet that Scott would choose to stay with the partnership even after the other party runs off with another man. It also looks like the Rams ownership will absolutly not see the forest for the trees and will not seek a divorce until we have ourselves a 1-15 record this season. Any chance that the new owner will wake up and see his investment eroding rather quickly and seek a divorce? I just don't see it happening with this Hollywood movie maker. Someone should draft a quick screenplay about a bad coach getting fired midseason and forward to the guy.
Jeff Gordon: We'll get the word out on that.

Mike: I don't get it, individually alot of our players seem to have NFL talent yet collectively they lay egg after egg. Compared to the Dolphins we're loaded with talent yet over the past 18 games we only have two more wins than them..
in your opinion could the coaching possibly be this bad? or are the players overhyped and overvalued?
it seems to me we need a hardnosed, veteran disciplinarian head coach in there to distill some leadership and change the whole team outlook/identity
Jeff Gordon: Again, a disaster of this magnitude is everybody's fault. A little of this, a lot of that.

Tshow: The Rams will not be able to hire any respectable football front office personnel and coaches until they solidify their ownership situation. Currently, this is a lame duck franchise. Are there any new facts or rumors regarding the ownership situation? This team cannot and will not improve until the ownership situation is resolved. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: If Chip wants to keep the team, he needs new capital and new leadership. He is more likely to sell.

davulture24: I keep hearing excuses regarding Marc Bulger, talk about him being a solid QB and that he is just "passive". Do we really want a passive quarterback to lead and fight for this team? Warner had his issues, but I can safely say he showed up each day with true heart and pride to lead our team. That is the difference. It's not always about passer rating (see: Farve). We need leadership, something that has never been Bulger's strong point. Can Green be this guy? Should we look at drafting a new QB in 2009?
Jeff Gordon: Green the guy? Maybe. Draft a QB? Definitely.

tgrillot: What do you think our biggest needs are? Bullpen help? Speed?
Jeff Gordon: Righthanded offense. Starting pitching depth too.

BGCARDFAN: The Cards obviously have several holes to fill and the money to do it, although it remains to be seen what DeValues they will assign to the FA class of 2009.

How do you see the Cards setting their priorities and in what order if you would venture a guess? ... position wise of course.
Jeff Gordon: LH relief, starting pitching, right-handed offense at SS and 2B . . .

Jeremy: Gordo, Thanks for doing these chats.

I haven't had a chance to watch either of the games, but how have the kids looked in the NHL prospects tournament? I'm really looking for to this Blues season and several of the young guys getting ice time. It should hopefully be a more entertaining show than what the Rams put on every Sunday.

Speaking of which, who would have thought 2 or 3 years ago people could make a legitimate argument for Mizzou having the best football team in the state.

Jeremy
Jeff Gordon: I saw a little bit of the games and the kids looked all right. They didn't dominate, but Pietrangelo, Junland, Oshie and Berglund could have an impact this year.

LT: Hey Gordo,

I'm a realist (like yourself), and I know that there is no "quick fix" for what we (fans and media alike) have had to endure so far this season. But in you honest opinion, what would be the first thing you would do to get this organization pointed in the right direction if you last name was Rosenbloom? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Hire a strong football guy as president.

gp: Gordo:

Since the 2008 season is suffiently a bust for the Ramshackles, do we have any hope of fielding a competitive team by the 2010 season? Also, any there any chance that ownership would dismiss everyone from the front office before this season ends? The only place that this type of performance is repeatedly tolerated is in St. Louis and Cincinnati.
Jeff Gordon: With 22 losses in 29 games, it is hard to be optimistic. Total change is needed.

Ramfrank: Gordo -

As far as I'm concerned, Burwell's column says it all. John Shaw and Jay Zygmunt have screwed up this franchise (with the all-too-brief exception of the Vermeil/Martz years) for decades!! How many winning seasons have there been on their watch?

If what Burwell writes is true -- signing players because he likes their agents and hiring coaches to be his friend, etc., that's MADNESS and UNFORGIVABLE!

We hear Shaw has begun to phase himself out; now it's time for Zygmunt to do the same (what does it say when not one but TWO Post-Dispatch columnists are calling for his ouster??). Chip can hold on to the team or not keep the team, but with JZ running the show, things will NEVER get better.

Do you disagree with any of this, G??
Jeff Gordon: Zygmunt's track record since getting more power speaks for itself. I like the guy, but, hey, the results don't lie.

Jeffrey Edelman: Jeff, great job working under such duress.

Is it me, or is Steven Jackson simply easy to bring down vs. other "top-flight" NFL running backs? Either his center of gravity is very high, his sense of balance is mediocre or his holdout was disastrous in it's effect. Either way,he looks far from a difference-maker right now.
Jeff Gordon: Steven stumbled on that one would-be long run, but he is otherwise fine. Once in a while he skips outside instead of turning in. But he is still a Top 5-caliber back. If he went elsewhere, everybody would scream when he put up big numbers.

kenny: Isn't this a classic case of tearing it all down and starting from square 1
Jeff Gordon: Believe it or not, there are some good players here. A lot of them, in fact. With new leadership, you would see that.

StLbLuEs: Hey Gordo, how we doing?

Hey, i was just curious if maybe you have talked to any of the blues Front office about their rookies and how they have looked so far in the tourney?

Any insight?

Also, if you had to make a guess, next season in the redbirds uniform, what's our rotation looking like?? Again.. just a guess as of right now.
Jeff Gordon: Redbirds: Keep Lohse with Carpenter, Wainwright and Wellemeyer. The fifth is a wild card. With Carpenter hurt, spending more for a Lowe-type would be nice. McClellan could cross over and Pineiro would win back a spot, but it would be great to trade for a lefty of some description.

Chris: It's September 15th, and Shanahan still has no contract. Is he in the "Rangers or Bust" mode right now?
Jeff Gordon: He also liked Montreal, but that money got spent. So we'll see. The Devils may be tapped out, but that would be interesting too. Why not the Blues?

David: I realize that the Rams place a high value on speed, which is why we have Avery. But isn't there something to be said for size in an NFL wide receiver. When you look at the top play making wider receivers in this league, they are all 6' plus and 200lbs. What are the chances the Rams go that direction in next years draft? Avery may prove to be a viable NFL reciever, but I don't see him as a dominant play maker.
Jeff Gordon: Size is always good, as Burress showed. The Rams hoped to get some of that with Bennett, but he is a bust. If Holt bolts. WR moves up the need list for next year.

rob walker: Do you see larussa returning after 09?
Jeff Gordon: After '09? Probably not. A monster year could change that, but TLR will be demand and he may want more say in the personnel stuff.

Rita from South County: Hi Jeff,

Thanks for taking the time to chat online with us today. Here are a few open letters regarding the Rams -- just in case anybody cares anymore.

To Chip and Lucia -
Your mother was a very beautiful and caring woman. St. Louis will be forever grateful to her for giving us the Rams. However, when she said Linny deserves another chance it was the meds talking.

To Steven Jackson -
If you would have been here for the preseason, you would have known what shoes to wear yesterday.

To Haslett -
You're starting Chavous and Hill because ... why?

To Saunders -
Dante Hall is D-U-N.

To the Martz Haters -
Under Martz: Faulk, Bruce and Holt all set records and had potential HOF careers. Under Linehan: Faulk retired, Bruce left for the 49ers, and Holt sees as much action on the sidelines as he does on the field. Thank you all for your obvious football expertise.

To the Throat Slasher -
At least YOU'RE happy.

To the wagering public -
I'm putting together a team of my 100 year-old grandma and McCain's 96 year-old mother to beat the Rams. Take the over and bet the house.
Jeff Gordon: We'll pass this along.

David: Any chance that good ol' MU gets to play for the shiny crystal trophy this January? Their O looks unstoppable, but their d will probably be exposed a bit by Oklahoma and maybe Texas. Think undefeated is possible?
Jeff Gordon: It's possible, but OU and then a SEC team would really try to muscle these guys. Stoops gave the world a playbook to use against the Tigers. It takes athletes on D, but a few teams have them.

agarcia: Hi gordo,
I think Linehan is going to get fired very soon, who do you think is going to stay in his position while the season is over? Also who do you thinks is going to be the next coaches HC, OC, DC? and what do you think of Marshall Faulk as our next GM?
thank you
Jeff Gordon: I'd rather have a good football man as president, perhaps with Marshall helping. And somebody like Billick or Rex Ryan as coach.

MIZ-ZOU: Hey Gordo, good stuff! In watching Mizzou wipe the floor with this early schedule, (no disrespect to the schedule its the only way to a national championship) how much do you feel Chase Daniels Heisman Trophy race plays into Pinkle's decision to play him or pull him. If it were me, I'd play him all game to pad those stats. Some analysts still have Tebow as the front runner????
Jeff Gordon: Tim is the front runner, but why expose Chase to unneeded risk at the end of a blowout win? Getting back to the Big 12 title game is the first goal.

Mysterio6: Gordo:

I read Mo saying he will be aggressive, but that could mean anything (try really, really hard?). But we haven't heard from the man who really makes the decisions: DeWitt. Wouldn't it be nice to hear a guarantee from this man that the money coming off the books will be used to improve the ballclub, instead of going to DeWitt Care?
Jeff Gordon: One way or another, the payroll will go over $100 million. The money will go somewhere. A lot of it may go to keeping the guys here, like the FA pitchers and the OFs heading to arbitration.

Red Bird: What's the over/under for Scott Linihan's weeks left on the job?
Jeff Gordon: Tough to say, because this is Chip's call and this is his first year on the job. Scott could last the year.

kaeagles: Gordo,

So after watching the Eagles & Giants beat up the Rams, what is your early read who which division is the toughtest in the NFC? Do you believe one of the conference championship participants is playing tonight?
Jeff Gordon: You throw Dallas into that discussion -- and Washington is not bad. Yes, that is the toughest division.

jealousblues: How can the offensive line be so horrible?
Last year they were bad, but you could give them a break because they absorbed so many injuries. Well this year they are healthy and appear to be worse.
Is it just coaching?

Any insight?
Jeff Gordon: Actually, Leckey and Goldberg are fill-ins. So the line is not healthy without Bell, Romberg and Setterstrom.

nick banche: Nick: Gordo, I am confused, how can tlr be powerfull enough to keep Rasmus from a sept call up but so weak that he can't get even token deadline help when he begs for it ?
Jeff Gordon: TLR doesn't make trades. And in retrospect, given all the other injuries (Ankiel, Carpenter's reinjury, Mulder's implosion, Glaus and Molina missing time, so on and so forth) it's the best the Cards didn't spend prospects on rentals. Lopez was a nice pick-up and Perez and Motte have been solid promotions.

As for Rasmus not getting a promotion, the kid was down in A ball rehabbing a second injury as Sept. 1 neared. Had he been in Memphis on a rhree-week hitting tear, it might have been a different story. Also, there were valid business reasons for keeping him down.

Brutus0117: Did you hear Torry in pre-game? He talked about how "the offense would take what the Giants gave them."

That made me throw-up in my mouth a little. It seems a perfect reflection of Linehan's play-to-not-lose philosophy. I think his passive attitude has trickled down to the entire team.

Do you remember when Bulger was a fearless gunslinger? Linny's "don't make a mistake" gameplan has neutered MB and the rest of this offense.

Plus-the O-Line,D-line,Wr's,Secondary,coaches and waterboy stink.
Jeff Gordon: I'm surprised that Al isn't being more aggressive. That has to change.

Studweiser: What are Chase Daniel's chances of making it in the NFL as a QB or otherwise? He has shown that he has the arm, the brains, the leadership, et cetera to excel in a major college program, but in today's NFL where O-linemen regularly measure around 6'7" and up, there doesn't seem to be much room for a QB his size. During the Nevada game I noticed Gabbert just towering over him on the sidelines...
Jeff Gordon: If Chase can make all the tough throws -- putting the ball in the windows of NFL defenses -- then he has a chance. Drew Brees isn't a giant.

sddwight: Will the Cards move forward and realize Mulder, Clement, Carpenter, et al, are not going to be a factor in 2009 and make some major moves this winter?
Jeff Gordon: Mulder and Clement are long gone and out of the team plans. Carpenter does become more iffy now, requiring the team to seek additional veteran pitching.

kaeagles: You mentioned earlier the injuries of Parisi and Garcia. It seems like the Cardinals minor leaguers have had more than their fair share of TJ and serious shoulder injuries the past decade. Do you believe this is consistent throughout baseball or have those in the Cards organization suffered a higher rate of injuries and bad luck?
Jeff Gordon: Pitching injuries are very common, but the Cards have taken more than their share of hits with high draft picks. College pitchers can arrive with wear and tear, but high school hurlers often break down during their 5- or 6-year march to the bigs. Some scouts believe they can predict shoulder and elbow injuries by looking at a delivery, but it is an inexact science.

okcarhauler: Well Jeff, here is another Monday after another moronic Rams loss. Can you give me a name of a coach that could takeover after the bye week when this Bozo is fired? Either that or the Rams just go out of business.
Jeff Gordon: If a change is made, it is more likely to come from within.

jealousblues: Sorry about the back to back questions.

Gordo, how did the situation with Rasmus get so bad?
Is he a bad guy or a just a kid being a kid?
I cant imagine how an organization could let this happen, you have a five tool guy who can hit, run, and field get in the dog house of a manager he has probably met 10 times?

I know his dad says some things on the internet, but really is that what its about?

Shouldnt there be someone in the organization that can step in and mediate this?
I mean he isnt Delmon Young or some problem child out causing trouble and showboating or is he?
and now it looks like they are going to be doing everything they can to ship him out before he even plays a game in St. Louis.
Jeff Gordon: Who said the situation is bad? If Rasmus has a great spring, he could make the team. If he goes to Memphis, he would be the first guy up if he started well. There is nothing wrong with letting him earn a promotion by hitting Class AAA pitching.

okcarhauler: Jeff why would the Rams bother to sign Eddie Kennision and then not even suit him up? I thought he done well under Al Saunders, he might be a little rusty but what had they to lose?
Jeff Gordon: He hadn't played football in forever. He was in no shape to play.

okcarhauler: Jeff, I hear a rumor that Chad Jackson might be in for a tryout. My question is, Why bother? Whe had a hall of famer in Issac Bruce and basically run him out of town, to play for the niners of all teams, I know he is a little long in the tooth, but he is alot better then the end all be all Drew " I'm Hurt" Bennett!
Jeff Gordon: That is one of the many decisions that could haunt this staff and management team.

DaninBlm.: Hey Gordo, Do you think Colby R. will be a Cardinal next year?
Jeff Gordon: Yes.

Steve (Roch. NY): Gordo,

Not sure how much the locals follow the Cards farm system - but their Class A SS team - the Batavia Muckdogs won the New York-Penn league championship yesterday!
Jeff Gordon: Well, that's something.

GoneGator: Gordo, first, thanks for fielding our weekly pleas for help! This is what, the third year in a row?

Anyway, I'm stunned there isn't any talk or buzz surrounding Linehan this morning (outside of the angry fan group). That is, making a move on him. Has anything been mentioned by management? Have you heard anything "on the streets"? Does anyone seem to care?

I told you two years ago Scott Linehan is to STL what Ron Zook was to Florida. Zook came in and nearly destroyed everything Spurrier had built up. Luckily, and unlike STL management, FL took care of business and sent him packing. The Rams have to do the same.
Jeff Gordon: Zook recruited the foundation of a championship team at Florida. Linehan has not done that here.

John: What do you think of putting Trent Green in for a quarter next week?

I really feel this team just needs some momentum... I think if they can get the wheels greased, they will be okay... They are just having the problem of getting the cart moving...

Thanks,
Jeff Gordon: At some point, soon, it will be worth a try.

Daniel Jamtgaard: I don't necessarily want to look too far down the road here (this is a hypothetical question)...but how is Missouri matching up with Oklahoma this year? I haven't paid too much attention to Oklahoma ...but I know they're strong and at this point a matchup in the Big 12 Championship seems inevitable.
Jeff Gordon: OU returns most of the team that physically handled the Tigers twice, so there you go. Until the Tigers prove they can beat the Sooners, Ic can't pick them to do so. I've seen too many slaughters.

Pat: Why do the Rams pay Bulger the amount of money they do when he has shown since he took over for Warner that he doesn't have what it takes to win. He can get pretty numbers sometimes but he does not win games.
Jeff Gordon: Marc got the money because Pro Bowl-caliber QBs are hard to find. If you got one, you keep him -- and try to block for him, too.

Brett: What would it take to pry Uggla from the Marlins this winter?
Is Felipe Lopez a Card next season?
Jeff Gordon: Florida might bite for a high-end young pitcher and one of the young OFs. Never know.

Eddie in Kentucky: Hey Jeff!

Do you see the Cardinals making an offer for either Lohse or Looper or both? Looper would have a better record than he shows if there was a little more offense generated in several of his starts.

Thanks for your insight!
Jeff Gordon: I like them both well enough, but I'd take Lohse. I like his approach and durability.

davulture24: Is there an issue with the Rams players lacking respect for the coaches? I know we have a lot of young players and an insufficient amount of true leaders on the team, but come on! Linehan seems willing to face the media to a degree, but what is going on with him facing the players. Linehan should be the one throwing chairs around the room, benching players, etc. As HC, he should be making a more vocal, noticable attempt, if nothing else for PR reasons, towards the players and the fans. Do you agree?
Jeff Gordon: Emotion is great, but a winning game plan and great in-game adjustments go further in the respect department.

GS: When is someone going to tell Steven Jackson to stop dancing and hit the hole. If he wants to dance, there are plenty of clubs on Washington! He started last year with this dance attitude as well. He's much more effective when he lowers his shoulders and hits!
Jeff Gordon: Give him 20 to 25 carries and some consistent run blocking and he'll be fine.

toldyouso: Jeff ,Don't you think its the responsibility of the head coach to get his team prepared to perform at a high level. The games i've seen, the Rams don't seem to be ready and or organized .There is no emotion what so ever on that sideline.
Jeff Gordon: Again, a winning game plan and in-game tactical adjustments are more important than the rah-rah stuff.

Apstl187: Hey Jeff,
Man I feel sorry for you STlouis Columnist having to answer questions for Stlouis Bad teams. Anyways I appriciate it, but can you give us some insight on what happened in the locker room after the rams game. I heard Little was throwing chairs and Looker blew up. We all saw Linehan up there about to cry of have his head explode maybe he shoulda spoke reality from the begining and got an attitude like this along time ago.

I feel we are paying Bulger, Jackson and Holt a lot of money, but I feel like they are the only ones who give a crap too. Bulger is clearly frustrated I mean he was MOVING AROUND IN THE POCKET and I thought with all things considered has been VERY TOUGH, but has not had the LINE LUXURIES that other top QBs have had. When peirce sacked him yesterday he didnt even have time to turn around be for he was hit.
If I see Hall outhere again Im gonna lose it get these young guys in there, I dont get it. Now Kennison is gonna come in and steal there playing time too
WHAT A MESS
Jeff Gordon: Eddie is just an emergency guy, for now. That could change if the kids don't come along. As for the emotion in the locker room, that was overdue. At least people can't say the players don't care.

Tank: Is there any way to get a Mizzou vs. Rams exibition game set up?
Jeff Gordon: It would be fun to see if somebody could run a spread offense against a NFL defense. Mizzou's defense would give up a LOT of points in this game.

Bryan: Hey Gordo, how was your weekend? Mine was great till Sunday arrived. hahaa
Anywho, just wanted to ask you a couple of questions. First many have gone crazy during these two horrible weeks of football. Now everyone seems to be pointing the finger everywhere. First Bulger, then the Oline, then Linehan. I feel for Bulger as he is a great QB with protection, although he can do better on some judgement calls. I WILLL blame the oline as they have fallen apart. I WILL also tear apart Linehan as he has done a horrid job in terms of motivation. I would like to see him leave and a guy like Spagnolo come in. Have you heard anything?
Also, whos someone you picture in a Rams uniform through the draft next year? I know its early but its never too early for DRAFT talk. I've heard great things from a certain tackle but I can't remember his name. Thanx GORDo YOU the MAN

oh and PS, have you ever seen Bulger get in his line's face? I get so mad when they get away with allowing a 60 million dollar investment get tossed around.
Jeff Gordon: Whichever OT is No. 1 by the end of the college season is the guy the Rams should take. Too early to say which one.

T-roy: For starters,I have a Rams jersey and can't wear it outside. I'm too embarrassed. My question. Why not let Marshall Faulk be the head coach? He's smart. Understands the players and would demand greatness, because that's all he knows. Also, his players would respect him.
Jeff Gordon: He has always said he doesn't want to put in those hours.

Dreamski: Gordo, is Kurt Warner really doing what it looks like he's doing? And are the GridBirds actually good? It's like karmic revenge to STL for not sticking by Kurt, like Green Bay stuck by Favrererere over the years, good day or bad. May I cheer for my boyhood team in exile now? If the GridBirds can actually get there, what can the Rams learn from this? Thanks!

And GO MIZZOU!!!
Jeff Gordon: Mad Mike Martz was clearly wrong about Kurt.

Joe: Wow, sure glad the Rams did'nt draft this Cutler, kid!
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, that would have been a wasted pick . . .

William: Gordo, SI.com is reporting Yost has been fired in MKE.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, heard about that. Too bad for Ned, but man, what a free fall -- two years in a row. Hard to believe it happened again.

patrick crane: the rams are in for a long year.there weekness are obvious.there head coach has never had to deal with the pressures of the n.f.l.but he gets paid a handsome salary.but hes not ready to talk intelligent about wins and losses. If he cant put things in percpective at press conferences.whats he telling the team.he needs to get a grip.or get someone in there to calm himself down.He the reason things are starting to snowball from last year.He doesnt seem like he is ready to lead this storied franchise.we have a good past.all he has to do is not panick.but he already is.It feels like were out of control.no one has the answer.were in trouble.
Jeff Gordon: Yes to all that.

adam_cruts: Jeff, if you're Torry Holt, why would you be in a Rams uniform next year?
Jeff Gordon: No, not unless there is major change.

Big Jack: Gordo,

Pls. tell me that Linehan will resign today. I know that the needs of the few or the one, outweights the needs of the many, after all, this is the USA, but msybe, just maybe, someone can use a little "commom sense" and end the bleeding. We need positive results, not excuses. This football year is already over. Can someone with real football know how please save what is left of this "franchise" and get things turned around??? Linehan must go now, as in TODAY.
Jeff Gordon: Bernie makes great points, but it's tough to be a quitter.

adam_cruts: Jeff, thanks as always. In your gut feeling, do you think that the Rams brass are concerned at all with letting the fan base deteriorate like this, likely causing the sell price of the Rams to drastically go down? Or is that really a concern?
Jeff Gordon: A new owner -- a good owner -- could revive the fan base pretty quickly.

Dreamski: Gordo, what is the enamoured state about Lopez? The guy can't field. Maybe he's going to long term turn the bat around. Miles may not be All-Star, but he's a gamer and has been a solid contributor. I understand the desire for a power-hitting 2B - seems every position has become a power spot anymore - but why Lopez?
Jeff Gordon: At second base, he could get by defensively with some work. I just like having some pop there. He is a fall back, but a more viable one than the others on hand.

adam_cruts: Jeff, sorry for all the questions. I noticed your response to the Eddie Kennison question about "why didn't he play week 2" by you saying that he was in no game shape to play. If that's the case, why was it reported on this site immediately after his signing that he might play? Had he not stepped on a scale after the signing?
Jeff Gordon: When we talked to Eddie Wednesday, he said he "might have to go to Target and buy some lungs" to play. When Avery proved healthy enough to play, there was no need to run him out there.

Ex-Jackson Fan: Knowing coach linehan isn't close to perfect; he's still not the one not playing with fire in their tummys & desire to win !!
Are there any cases of linehan making a bad judgment call on the rams sideline that has cost them a game & warrant firing him???
Jeff Gordon: His teams have been consistently bad in the second half, after the other side adjusts. His gameplans are almost always insufficient and his game management speaks for itself. 22 losses in 29 games, is it, and 15 of the last 18?

okcarhauler: Jeff, Thanks for taking the questions. If the Rams are a true business, here to make a profit, Then Chip Rosenbloom needs to know that I personally have not and will not spend one more dime on anything Rams IE hats, jerseys ect. until he gets this Management/ Coaching thing fixed. I have even cut off my Direct TV Sunday ticket which I was a charter member when it first started. Why spend a dime on a product that is clearly mis-managed and doesn't care about it's customers! And they have the NERVE to want a new stadium in a few years? I'd just show them the nearest onramp to I-70 and tell them good luck! I don't expect Superbowls every year, but at least look like you care enough to try to compete!
Jeff Gordon: Fair enough. And this is my last answer of the day.

Thanks for all the questions and comments!
