Michael Kent: Jeff ...
Of all the Cards' September callups, would you consider Matt Pagnozzi's callup as the most intriguing? It makes you wonder if the Cards may be thinking about parting ways with Jason LaRue after this season as a potential (albeit small) salary-reduction move. I guess the question is whether the Cards view Pagnozzi as their long-term backup catcher. Surely, it doesn't appear they're ever going to call up Bryan Anderson unless Yadier Molina is on the DL for an extended period (God forbid).
Now that the Cards have clinched, do you expect Pagnozzi to get some playing time in this final week?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Matt is an excellent receiver, but he is NOT a big league hitting prospect. Anderson suffered a shoulder injury that set him back this year, so it is difficult to assess his standing.
LaRue is an excellent back-up. He relocated his hitting stroke in St. Louis. He is a nice part of the chemistry. I wouldn't fool with that.
Joe Stafford: Hello Jeff, can we just say Goodbye to Bulger? At this point I would start Keith Null. What we would lose buy more? At this point who cares!
Jeff Gordon: At 0-3, the Rams are going nowhere this season. We'll see Null at some point, I suppose.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, can you please remind me who's bright idea to dump Isaac Bruce or sign Drew Bennett and get rid of Kevin Curtis was? We sure could use them right now!
Jeff Gordon: The Bennett deal was one of the many tragedies of the earlier regime. Ditto the Curtis move, although his injury history suggests that he is overpaid now.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, I have alot of respect for coach Spag's, he has helped this team alot. With that said, can we lose the ground Chuck Knox 70's offense of run, run, pass, punt please? A high school varsity team could defend this offense!
Jeff Gordon: Maybe not a high school offense, but a good NFL defense could stop it with nine or 10 guys since there is a huge portion of the field that almost never gets attacked.
Tackleberry: Gordo,
So when the '09 season comes to a close and Spagnuolo and Devaney look at this offense how do they determine the cause of the unit's futility? Is it Bulger's fault; he's been the one common denominator these past 4 seasons and still seems shaky in the pocket, but as we are learning this organization stiffed him at receiver this year. Is it Shurmur's fault; remember that Linehan stuck with Olson, who was in over his head, will Spagnuolo have the same loyalty or will he have the stones to send an ineffective friend packing? But again, no receivers makes it difficult for him to implement his offense. Or will the answer be a hybrid of a proven OC and a new QB? The one thing that can't be denied is that they cannot skimp on talent at a position, like they did at receiver this year.
Jeff Gordon: There is a lot wrong with the offense -- almost everything but Jackson stinks. The O-line is OK at best, despite that huge investment. Fells had a nice day, but he remains a work in progress. WRs, FB, and back-up RBs are poor. Still, the coaching staff better get more aggressive with the scheme or this team is doomed to 0-16. This team is easily defended as is.
