Mike: Greeting O' Wise One,
I know we have many needs to fill, but it seems to me that we should never again count on a injury-historied pitcher (i.e. Carpenter) being an important part of the rotation. So, if the Cardinals are truly serious about no one being untouchable on the roster, what does it take to pry Jake Peavy loose and is it a net gain or loss for our organizational depth. I appreciate your insight and valuable anlysis.
Mike
Jeff Gordon: The Padres would probably want Wainwright in such a deal, plus Rasmus and other goodies. I don't believe the Cards would have enough pitching otherwise (with Garcia out for a year) to interest San Diego. Peavy is a top-10 pitching talent.
UtahCardsFan: Of all the regular position players, who do you think has a chance of doing better next year than this year. It seems like most had career year offensive numbers... might be time to sell high, buy low.
Jeff Gordon: Ankiel could do better just by staying healthy and making a few more adjustments. By trying to play hurt, he drove down his production. Ludwick probably peaked, as we saw with his erosion down the stretch. I don't like the idea of trading him, though, because the team has so many lefty bats. And I doubt that other teams are completely sold based on one-plus seasons in the majors.
The Cards ought to give Ryan a three- or four-year deal and count on solid 25-homer, 90-RBI seasons and good D from him.
Juan Felipe: Hey Jeff. What acquisitions do you see in the Card's offseason. Not specific people, just what they plan for this winter.
Jeff Gordon: Lefty relief pitcher is No. 1. Fuentes is guy the Cards coveted for a long time, given his ability to close. They need a shortstop and/or 2B capable of producing runs, plus another potential starter to protect against Carpenter's issues.
Jerome: Hey G
How long will Burton and Hill be out?
Also do you think that Chris Long will get Defense Rookie OF The Year
Jeff Gordon: There is hope for Burton after the bye week. Hill may need longer than that. As for Long, let's see if this team wins any games. If it does, he could factor in the race. He is making himself visible out there.
Tim: Im reading that peavy is available for trade. Could the cards be likley destinations for him?
Jeff Gordon: Of course the Cards would look into that. And that is a player good enough to consider offering Colby Rasmus. But, again, S.D. would have to get top young pitching back and I'm not sure the Cards have the Matt Garza-type to serve up. I don't see them dealing Wainwright, for instance.
Tim: Do you think the Cards will look for offensive upgrades at both middle infield positions. Id like to see a Furcal and Hudson middle infield not only is it a huge offensive up grade and a leadoff hitter but 2 very good defensive players.
Jeff Gordon: Furcal is a fascinating possibility, but LA could afford to keep him if the Dodgers let ManRam leave. But if ManRam stays, maybe Rafael hits the market.
As for Hudson, he is a fine player -- but is he worth millions more, per year, than Lopez?
Tim: Do you think McClellan will go into the rotation? I hope not nothing against him its just he did awsome in the bullpen last year and why change that.
Jeff Gordon: Good question. Kyle was resilient in the pen until the end, when he clearly wore out. He has the makeup to start and would be the top candidate among the young hurlers to fill a spot. His fate depends on what other moves the club makes. If Springer comes back and joins Perez, Motte and Kinney on the right side of the bullpen, Kyle could move into the rotation. If the team gets strong lefty help for the pen, that would also make the move more possible.
But if the Cards are able to deal for or sign another starter, then Kyle can stay where he is.
DBQIA: How good do you think Missouri's defense really is? Will we be able to put enough pressure on Oklahoma? Will our backfield be able to cover?
Jeff Gordon: I like the pass pressure the Tigers mustered in Lincoln -- and the strong work against the run. But the Cornhuskers don't have OU-type receivers and Ganz nearly threw for 300 yards.
So, no, I don't see Mizzou containing the OU offense. That D has to get a lot better.
ctramsfan: Jeff, I know it's a little early to be thinking about the offseason, but because of this team's current state, I can't help myself. First off, the guys who can't do the job on the field need to be shown the door. There are some players on this team who just simply aren't NFL caliber players right now or are over the hill, (Dante Hall, Corey Chavous, Quinton Culberson, Chris Draft, Nick Leckey, etc.). These players need to be let go and replacements need to found at the end of the year whether it is through the draft or through free agency. Guys like Alex Barron, Richie Incognito, O.J. Atogwe, Tye Hill, and Drew Bennett need to prove that they are worthy of staying by the end of the year, and if they don't they need to be shown the door as well, regardless if they were a first round pick or an undrafted free agent, a high priced free agent, or a player who makes the league minimum. The bottom line is if these guys don't produce they need to be gone. Out of curiosity I took a look at some of the free agents who will be available at the end of the year, and if these guys don't step up, there are plenty of guys that can fill the needs; Phillip Buchanan, Nnamdi Asomugha, Chris Gamble, Yeremiah Bell, Sean Jones, Jermaine Phillips, Mike Goff, Marc Columbo, Stacy Andrews, Mark Tauscher, Matt Birk, Eric Ghiaciuc, Channing Crowder, Bart Scott, Eric Barton, Chris Canty, Julius Peppers, Terrell Suggs etc. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for your time Jeff
Jeff Gordon: I can see Leckey staying, since he has held up surprising well at center as a fill-in. Otherwise, yes, the Rams will have many holes to fill. This is why Chip must decide what he is doing with the team. If the ownership is up in the air, the Rams won't have strong leadership at the top. And without leadership, the Rams won't attract the better free agents.
The draft is the draft -- players have no choice but to come. Free agency turns into a popularity contest.
Tim: How do you see the Blues line pairings the first game after obviously the Stemniak Mcdonald and Boyes line?
Jeff Gordon: I loved Kariya, Berglund and Perron. I also loved how Oshie looked with Tkachuk and Backes. That would leave McClement to center a couple of bruisers and kill penalties.
Brett: Do you think Mo will answer TLR's request for a big bat? Ludwick's numbers are solid, but can he repeat? I think we need one more legitimate threat in the lineup, along with a MI who can get on base and steal some bases. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: There will be upgrades in the middle infield. That is where the offensive improvement will come from. If anything, the Cards will have to subtract from the outfield to get some pitching help or address that middle infield need.
A full year of Rasmus and Mather, plus a full year of a healthy Ankiel, would add a lot more power to the outfield. Duncan could factor in IF he heals and IF the team elects to move either Ankiel or Rasmus. IF Duncah heals, he, too, would increase the power quotient.
Mark in NY: Gordo, I've been pretty tough on the family in these chats, and I would just like to take a moment and acknowledge the excellent decisions Chip made last week, and also his handling of the entire process. The timing was right to fire Linehan, hiring Haslett was the right decision at this time, and everything was handled very professionally! Chip, thank you, you've given us hope! I think Haslet is the right guy for right now, and I hope he turns things around. (PS-we still want you to sack Shaw and Zygmunt at the end of the year!).
After reading the article on Haslett, I am more convinced than ever that Linehan was out of his league. A head coach that doesn't even speak with his defensive coordinator until game day? Whatever. I still can't believe we let him cut Isaac Bruce. And the decision to cut Fakir Brown made no sense whatsoever since his contract was guaranteed. Mistake after mistake. Haslett already sounds like a better coach than Linehan. Much more emphasis on field position and playmakers.. basic football stuff. And you can't help but admire the way he dealt with hurricane Katrina.
What's your take on Jim's article?
Jeff Gordon: We were privy to a lot of that info, which is why we were all calling for Scott's head. Nice guy, but in over his head. Releasing Brown was apparently a spiteful move - and the end result was disaster. Some things that happened late in Linehan's regime made you wonder if he will ever get a shot at this sort of job again.
Whip wills: Jeff,
Look into your crystal ball and tell us who the starting 8 will be for the Cardinals on opening day 2009.
Jeff Gordon: Here is the lineup I could live with:
Rasmus -- more power and speed than Schumaker.
Ludwick/Ankiel -- depending on RH or LF starter.
Albert
Ludwick/Ankiel
Glaus
Lopez -- Could hit .270 with gap power, SBs and higher run production. He was one of the most productive late-season additions in all of baseball.
Molina
Renteria -- Certain to get more than 20 RBI.
This is not very sexy, but offers more power than the '08 team in three spots and allows the team to spend more on pitching with Carpenter looking iffy.
Trevor: What are the chances the Cardinals sign Furcal this offseason? Or is there even any real interest?
Jeff Gordon: A lot of teams need a SS, so he could go well over $15 million a year if the bidding went right. He wants to stay in LA -- and the longer that team plays, the more likely it is the team will find money for everybody (while writing off Andruw Jones as s mistake.)
Pastaman372: Jeff: Will the Cardinals attempt to sign Felipe Lopez for 09 and will he fill the 2B position? Would the Cardinals be interested in Renteria for a one or two year deal?
Jeff Gordon: As I noted earlier, these would be logical moves. Give Jose Oquendo credit for waking up Felipe. Edgar would also have a good impact on him.
drelboc: Hey Gordo;
Based upon what I have been reading in Stltoday.com sports, the Cards will not be doing much in regard to signing FA outside their own organization. Are you hearing anything about the direction the Cards are looking to go in regard to trade rumors? Who are the "indemand" Cardinal candidates that will most likely go in a trade to bring what we need to fill the holes on the Cards roster?
THANK YOU very much for always being there for us fans Jeff!! Also, I'd just like to add that "YOU" and your sportwriter constituants are very much appreciated!! If I can say it this way...I am as big a fan of you sportswriters as I am a Cardinal fan. I'll never tire of giving my thanks to you because I think you all do a great job of going the extra mile of keeping us fans timely informed with sound opinions that are grounded in facts and truth. (These kind of forums are an example of that). It pleases me to have the opportunity to tell you that! Stltoday.com/sports is blessed to have YOU on their team!
Jeff Gordon: The team has a surplus in the OF, at 3B and at catcher, where Bryan Anderson has become a big chip. I'd like to see Schumaker and Mather stay as the fourth and fifth outfielders and I'd like to see Barton in reserve at Memphis. Duncan is a wild card, but there is no guarantee he can come back from surgery.
Brett Wallace could be a trade chip, since he plays first. Freese could be a chip, based on his huge play at 3B and the fact that the Cards could try to coax Glaus into finishing his career here.
Andrew Friend: When the first pitch of the 09 season is delivered, do you think we'll see Ankiel, Ludwick and Rasmus in the Cardinals' outfield? If so, how does Schumaker figure into the team's plans? Would the Cardinals consider moving him to second base? He could platoon with Miles (I'm hoping he's back) and play the outfield when needed. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Schumaker lacks power and he can't see bases, so he present the same shortcoming at a new position. The teams needs more run production at SS and 2B. Starting the year with Rasmus -- something TLR would have to be convinced to do -- would add even more power to the outfield. Starting the year with Mather in the mix would do the same.
I'd take Lopez at 2B with Miles as the extra guy.
Josh Gordon: What position or players do the Rams take in next years draft? And do you think their priority would be for replacing veterans (eg LT Pace) or improving weaker positions (D-Backs)?
Jeff Gordon: I'd start with OT and go from there. LBs, DBs, QB -- this team needs it all.
Marty: Gordo!
Out of the D we have, which one(s), are effective mentors for the kids? To me, the play of these veterans is the weak link in the D, not the rookies. They look as inconsistent and indecisive as last year. Are the kids throwing them off or are they just not that good?
Do you think JD will ride out the season with what he has? At what point do they start looking for help?
Jeff Gordon: It's a fair point about the D. Brewer and Jackman were erratic last year and McKee hasn't been able to stay healthy. These three are so crucial to the unit. I love Polak and Wagner. Woywitka has come a long way and he will be important when he heals. I see Pietrangelo ending up back in junior hockey after a while -- unless Junland falls apart.
Murray's success or failure may be determined by the veteran D. I like everything else about this team.
bob_n_weave: Im betting the Rams game plan is to air it out on Sunday and Bulger racks up 3 pick's. Any taker's ? Redskins 28 Rams 16.
Jeff Gordon: Washington is VERY good. Haslett will try to emphasize Jackson, but that is a strong team. Your bet looks good.
eli: when will Burton be back?
can berlin start one day? Can spark the offence?
would the rams consider Roy williams? the lions are shopping for him.
When is marc Bulger ever going to throw a long pass to Avery? We did draft him because of his speed
Is DT Ryan the starter now?
Jeff Gordon: Ryan will get the lion's share of work, yes. Glover will be a change-of-pace guy. Burton could be back this week. Berlin had a nice preseason, but he only plays of the others go down. He is not a top prospect. Why consider Roy Williams? This team has enough problems. Why add one from another team.
The Rams will go deep to Avery.
Jay Richards: Hi, Jeff:
Is it realistic to expect significant change from the Rams coming out of the bye week and for the rest of the season? Yes, they'll have a new head coach and a new defensive coordinator, and Bulger will be back at QB. But to quote a phrase frequently heard in political circles recently, isn't this more like putting lipstick on a pig?
Jeff Gordon: True, especially when you look at which teams loom next on the schedule.
Rick: Would Haslett consider replacing Chavous with Johnson at SS ? There are a lot of weak links in the secondary, but Chavous stands out in all the wrong ways.
Jeff Gordon: Venturi may look at this. A lot of folks at Rams Park agree with you on this one.
Rich: Hey Gordo,
Do you see Haslett and Al Saunders making any changes to jump start the offense?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Derek Stanley got some work with the No. 1 offense, so it's possible that he could step into the mix and add even more speed.
Tim Salyers-Clinchco, Va.: Lonngtime Redbird fan, went to sleep at night in early sixties listening to west coast games on radio,,miss KMOX, feel that has hurt a lot of long-time and true fans,,Gibson vs Drysdale or Marichal was super matchups, 1-0,,2-1, haven't seen another all-star infield from one team such as '64 Cards (Boyer,Groat,Havier, and White). Are there any names of potential players that might be on the radar screen the Cards could acquire to back up Pujois? (Vlad Guererro?)I feel this is more urgent than pitching. At least we have some young guys with decent shot at starting and relieving. We need Pujois to get some pitches to hit. I feel good about '09,,signing Duncan was huge.
Jeff Gordon: If you have a healthy Ankiel, Ludwick, Rasmus and Glaus in the Cards lineup, that is plenty of power -- especially if the team beefs up production in the middle infield. Miles, Izturis, Kennedy, Ryan and Schumaker didn't give the offense much oomph.
bfulton: It's been constantly reported, so I'm going to assume it's true that Haslett had differences with Linehan. Maybe those differences were just personal, but I'll also assume they're football differences. Based on what you've heard Haslett say directly, or even second hand, what changes, beyond end of practice wind sprints, should we expect to see in the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: The big problem with Scott was the overall lack of urgency and intensity. That is what must be fixed. The systems are in place for the year. You'll see some players exit here and there, but the working tone is what really has to change.
redbirdswin: I'm a big fan of signing Rafael Furcal to fill the SS spot next season, but it looks like his price may keep rising if he keeps impressing this postseason.
I don't think the Cards will pony up for Furcal, but I do think they could welcome back Edgar Renteria, who would come cheaper and maybe become that NL player we all knew and loved. Oh yeah - and he kills lefties, who seem to be the achilles heel for recent Cardinal teams. What are your thoughts on the 2009 SS spot of the Cards?
Jeff Gordon: Edgar would be the perfect fit. His numbers would offer a big upgrade from what Izturis did.
jasmemphis: Hello. I am hoping you have the definitive answers to the questions: What about Mulder? Where is he? What's he doing? Is he still on the Cardinal payroll? Is he coming back to pitch in 2009? ( Please say no. )
Thank you for your time.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will give him a $1.5 million buyout and wish him well. If he wants to come to spring training on a tryout basis, the team might consider it. But his problems are more mental than physical.
LrdStnly: It's been thrown around as a topic on the forums, maybe you can answer. How are ticket sales? Any sold-out games?
Jeff Gordon: Which team? The Blues are struggling to sell out their building, as are the Rams -- other than for the Cowboys and Bears games.
CTRamsFan: Gordo,
You mentioned in a recent column that Linehan considered "jettisoning" Torry Holt in a final act of desperation before he was fired. Could you expound a little bit more about this statement? I think more than a few inquiring minds would like to know. What's your take on Haslett's ability to make the team respectable?
Thanks in advance.
Jeff Gordon: Apparently Linehan talked about dealing away Holt, just as he released Brown. Needless to say, he lacked the authority to do that. Such thinking didn't help prolong his employment.
Frank Wild: Jeff
Looking back this year at the Cardinals' offense there were times it appeared to be not overly efficient or productive. However, when you look at all the individual numbers like Glaus, Ankiel, Schumacher, Molina, Ludwick and Pujols you see a lot of decent averages, home runs, and rbi's. What is the Cardinals's offense lacking and who would like to see added. I can remember a Cardinals team that won the world series with Darrel Porter hitting fifth so don't say it is an impact bat.
Jeff Gordon: It was a weird year. The team was too streaky offensively. The team needs more weapons in the lineup and more power on the bench. Then it has to do a better job of manufacturing runs -- SFs, RBI groundouts, hitting behind runners, stealing bases, etc.
HEG: Gordo Mizzou looked good Sat. vs. Neb.; but they need to be cautious this week-end vs. Ok. State- they are ranked #18- 3rd in Offense. I believe Mizzou can score no matter who the opponent may be; but Ok. St. is more methodical on offense than Mizzou taking more time off the clock to score which could work to Mizzou's disadvantage leaving the defense on the field longer; somewhere in this season the defense of Mizzou will have to step-up & make plays to secure a win. I just hope they rise to the occassions; in other words I believe the defense will determine whether Mizzou plays at the highest level this year; Re; the Rams- I believe they will play better but they are still a bad team; Re; the Cards- I think thet will be cautious this off-season regarding free-agents. What is your take on these comments?
Jeff Gordon: You are correct across the board.
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
With Mark Mulder's 2009 option buyout by the Cards pretty much a given, where does Mulder go from here? Do you feel like he'll want to cut ties with St. Louis to start anew and get the best money possible with another team willing to take a chance, or is there any chance he'd be willing to agree to a low-guaranteed money, incentive-laden deal (maybe even a minor-league contract?) with the Cards to make one last attempt to atone himself wearing the Birds on the Bat? Certainly he owes the organization big time. But does Mozeliak (and DeWitt) have the stomach to go down that road again, a la Matt Clement?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Mulder is a head case. If he has an off-season epiphany and figures out how to pitch again, then the Cards should invite him to camp on a make-good deal and try to get something out of him. Otherwise . . .
Thomas: Hey Jeff;
"With the 1st overall pick in the 2009 Draft, the St. Louis Rams select __________."
Obviously we have major issues just about everywhere, but given what you've seen so far from college ball, can you throw in some names that would strongly be considered?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams need to draft the best available OT. Michael Oher would be the guy today.
Tackleberry: As a Rams fan you get the feeling that Haslett is not just an '08 coaching band-aid for this team. Does his contract outline any criteria that guarantees him another season based on his results?
What are the chances, no matter who the coache is in '09, that the Rams bring in someone to be a true personnel director, oversee the draft, oversee free agency signings?
Jeff Gordon: Chip needs to install a strong football man to take care of all the big decision making. Haslett has a chance to return as coach if he gets results, but he would have to be considered a long shot right now. Tough schedule ahead -- winning five or six will take a miracle.
marpdagn: Hey Gordo. Has Rasmus' stock dipped over this past season? If the Cards are able to extend Ankiel, do you see the team more likely to remove the untouchable tag on Rasmus? And lastly, would the Giants do a Rasmus for Cain swap if the Cards threw in a minor league pitcher?
Jeff Gordon: This type of deal could occur, yes. Rasmus has never been untouchable, but the team would only consider moving him to get a potential 10-year All-Star caliber contributor. In that scenario, a contract extension for Ankiel would be essential.
OPTIMEGUS: How do you see the current economic events affecting the Blues?
Jeff Gordon: It's terrifying for the owners, who don't have the capital to sustain eight-digit losses. Look for the team to be run carefully until better times prevail.
John: Gordo:
What is the latest on Fakhir Brown?......I can't believe nothing has been reported. When is Derek Stanley going to start returning kicks and Dante "run to the 20 and get tackled" Hall FINALLY going to be released?
Linehan's stubborn loyalty to the "past their prime" vets led to his/Rams demise and Haz knows it.
Jeff Gordon: Hall would have to be in some peril, although Saunders still finds stuff for him in the offense. Brown has the Rams over a barrel. He is asking for more money to return. The team has to pay it. There is no choice.
Fletcher: Hey, Can you please explain to me why the hunt isn't on for Marty S. as headcoach for next season or the rest of this season. Let me explain my position and please tell me were I am wrong and if what I am asking is realistic. 1st point he is a really good coach, a proven winner, with tons of experience at bringing teams back from the pits of football shame. He is well respected by other coaches, fans, players, and the media. High quality free agents will be able to seriously consider coming here because they know they will playing under a good coach with a good scheme. (Imagine all those unhappy good Chargers players who miss their Martyball). He also would attract quality asst. coaches. Provide instant credibility and show that the organization is forreal about turning this thing around. Why settle for Haslett, or even consider him for the future. There are at least 3 high quality coaches out there right now. Don't get Billick though, he is not what we need either. I live in Baltimore and I love all the STL teams. (as hard as it is). I couldn't handle the thrashing these Raven fans would give me. Hunt Marty down, pay him what he wants, give him control of what he wants. I believe he is exactly what our players, team, organization, and fans need. People will by tickets to see what Marty has done with the team. Give him a radio shpw a high quality free agent on defense(secondary) and draft a nice young QB and fanfare will be at its highest. Please respond in detail.
My next question. What is the likelyhood of Marshall F. becoming the GM? Is that spot really open? Meaning the new HC could also be GM or Devaney becoming the GM or (gulp!!) keeping Jay z or just a new face altogether? Which has the highest probability in your opinion?
Last question. I like Bulger, I feel like if he were on a different team he would be considered one the best QB's playing. I understand his problem is Battered QB Syndrome. Has he admiited it yet, is he in denial or better yet has he recognized his problems? Will he be able to recover in STL? It took Warner a new team and 2 or 3 years to get cured. What's the remedy for Bulger? In your Opinion.
My apologies for the long note, but it's hard getting info in B.More on the Rams especially with us doing soooo badly. THANKS
Jeff Gordon: Marty would be a viable option, since his playoff record isn't a concern here. As for Faulk as GM, he needs to be a No. 2 while he learned the ropes. Putting him in there without experience could be like hiring Millen out of the TV booth.
jon in kentucky: It looks like Craft will be starting over Manning at cornerback is that true, and is it the right call in your estimation?
Jeff Gordon: Manning apparently lacks the speed to play out on the island. So options are limited right now.
jon in kentucky: I haven't heard how Glen Dorsey is doing this year, any sacks? # of tackles. I was just curios how that draft choice of Long is looking in the EARLY parts of the season and their careers. It has seemed to me that Long is improving each game, i like his intensity, but how about Dorsey?
Jeff Gordon: Dorsey has no sacks, according to NFL.com, and not much in the way of tackles.
Tim G: Any idea what Seattle might want in a trade for JJ Putz? Would one of the outfielders like Ankiel be enough, or would they want a pitcher as well?
Jeff Gordon: Putz wasn't great at the end of last year. I'm not dealing Ankiel for that.
bally22: With Kyle Lohse signed, I would like to trade Joel Pineiro and Adam Kennedy to free money and go after A.J. Burnett or another upper tier pitcher. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Trade Pineiro and Kennedy for what? I keep Joel and try to get him back to his '07 for. Kennedy may just get a release, if nobody else wants him. Burnett won 10 games in back-to-back season before breaking out last year. Why pay him $15 million per year or more, especially with his injury history?
sssmith6267: Do you see any changes coming to the Rams front office ? Firing the coach in my opinion was a small step but what truly needs to be done is to replace the inept people that are running this organization.
Jeff Gordon: There will be substantial change.
redbirdswin: Place these lefties in order, according to the Cardinals perceived interest:
Brian Fuentes, Will Ohman, Jeremy Affeldt, Arthur Rhodes, Joe Beimel, Dennys Reyes
Jeff Gordon: The first three look right, in order. The others? Shrug.
That shows you how fast it drops off, eh? The Cards need Tyler Johnson to heal.
virginiatom: I feel like the Rams aren't going to be any kind of a team until the new owners take over. Chip isn't the guy, nor is Haslett. His Saints had one good year under him, and that was only 10-6 and bounced out in the playoffs. I know its a wait and see, but his record as a coach is average at best, and as a coordinator horrible. With Haslett the Rams will be that, average. What record do you think he has to come back with before Rosenbloom refuses to accept average for this franchise and brings someone in to produce a winner?
Jeff Gordon: He has already decided to hire a strong football guy -- if he keeps the team past this year.
redbirdswin: Brett Wallace's future is . . .
a) Future Cardinals 3B
b) Future Cardinals OF
c) With another team
Jeff Gordon: Never say never on the OF, but I see him hitting his way into the big leagues next year. Unless Albert's elbow blows, Wallace figures to become a prime trade chip.
Hen: Hi Gordo,
Thanks for taking my question. Are you as concerned as I with the way Haslett "excuses" his defense's poor performance during the 2nd half of the Bills game? His expectation level doesn't seem to promote a sense of urgency or the right attitude to improve that side of the ball. If you're a good leader, I would think that you would always expect just a little more than what you are getting from your team.
Do you think he just said that to boost the morale of the defense or do you really think he thinks they played well? I also recall him saying after past games if it weren't for a few long plays we played well. Doesn't make sense to me.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed totally.
den-the-coach: Jeff,
Just a quick inquiry as to Dante Hall being released and Stanley being promoted from the practice squad...Any confirmation on that?
Thanks,
den-the-coach
Jeff Gordon: Don't know if that has happened, but we talked about that extensively last week on KFNS (noon to 2 p.m., The Sports Edge). Derek was working with the first offensive unit before the team broke.
virginiatom: Who in your opinion has the best shot to be the new owner of the Rams and when will that most likely occur?
Jeff Gordon: Why not Rush Limbaugh? He knows sports, has lots of rich friends, has plenty of jack himself, likes Missouri . . .
pdub: Gordo
What lineup/personnel changes do you see Haslett making as he takes over as HC?
Also, do you think Adam Carriker is mis-cast in his current position?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Good question about Carriker. Is he really a 3-4 guy? Or can he, Ryan, Long and Little mesh as a foursome? Adam is a worker, so I bet he can adapt to whatever the Rams need.
Franklin: Any chance that we'll be seeing Glen Metropolit wearing the new Blues third jersey sometime this year? I would imagine Philadelphia would deal his two-year contract for a middling prospect? Maybe Linglet?
Jeff Gordon: The Flyers outbid the Bruins for Glen to get him into an offensive role. Philly has some depth up the middle, but I'm sure why they would make the move. And I like what we've seen of the Blues forward chemistry.
SteveW: Thanks for the time, Jeff,
CARDS - I don't get why everyone is talking about using the money for another starter. If we had had HALF the blown saves/losses from the bullpen as we had this year, we would have made the playoffs. I'm sure good starters don't want to come here and pitch 7-8 good innings and watch the bullpen blow the game every night. I would spend every penny they have left on the bullpen. There lies the problem to me. It must affect the everyday players as well.
TIGERS- love watching them. But hate the fact that in the next 4 weeks all the big 12 teams are going to knock each other out of BCS chances while SoCal, etc. plays noone. Also, why is the backup a senior? Why aren't they grooming a freshman or sophmore for quarterback. (I live in Atlanta now so don't know what's happening there except for this great site.)
THANKS!
Jeff Gordon: The Tigers are grooming Blaine Gabbert to take over next year for Daniel and he is getting some snaps. But Patton would step in right now if Daniel went down, so he gets some snaps as well.
I see OU solidifying its chance at the title game the next few weeks. But the Big 12 is like the SEC -- a lot of infighting. Either Texas or Mizzou could be sad in a couple of weeks.
Although the bullpen needs obvious improvement next year, largely by playing the kids, more veteran depth for the rotation is also in order.
Chad: Jeff this isn't so much a question as it is a celebration piece. If the cardinals can't get into the playoffs there is one thing that can make me happy and that is watching the cubs throw up on themselves. Money can buy alot of things but it can't buy the cubs respect. I don't like how the fans are so gun hoe about what the cubs did all season but then when they **** in the bed Cubs fans don't want anything to do with them. Maybe some cub fans could take something from a proud franchise. When they lose stand behind them while throwing a couple of people under the bus and when they win oh wait they haven't done that in over a hundred years now. Ok when they do eventually win I HOPE I'M DEAD. GO CUBS HERES TO ANOTHER 100.
Jeff Gordon: Cardinal fans applaud your passion and sentiment.
spriggster: Gordo,
Do you think Chip is paying attention to the re-birth in Miami. By bringing in real football people the Dolphins have begun to turn around their organization in one year. They are at least competitive and have a chance in a poor division. Will he show more guts in the hard decisions that need to be made or wimp-out like he did in his Linehan press conference? I don't think he has the stomach for this business.
Jeff Gordon: You may be right, which is why Chip may not be in the game for long.
rosenbloomla: Gordo, thanks for taking my question. Do you know if the Coaches have brought any free agents in for backup roles since the firing of Linehan?
Also, what has the general mood at Rams park been like since the firing? I know it was a short week but I am optimistic about Hasletts change maybe I'm stretching but I think we can still turn this around.
Thanks Gordo!
Jeff Gordon: I see player promotion being a bigger deal than outsiders coming in. Can Stanley help the return game? What will Burton add? Can Ryan make the most of extra playing time? Can Johnson help at safety?
Paul in Peoria, IL: With Dave Duncan signing a contract for 2009 with a mutual option for 2010, are there discussions for TLR coming back in 2010? I can't imagine one returning without the other.
Jeff Gordon: The option covers the possibility that the Cards win next year and TLR decides to keep going. They are a package.
Superjim: Hi Gordo,
Let me ask you, is the mood in St. Louis more optimistic now that Linehan is gone and Haslett's in charge? I get the distinct impression that Haslett intends to lead this team and prepare them for the battles that lie ahead. This is the type of thing he's brilliant at, flying in the face of everyone, and trying to produce an honest, hardworking team. For the first time in 12 months I'm excited about the season, and while I don't think we'll win the division (there's optimistic and there's optimistic), I do think we should put the 49ers in their place (4th), and have Jim Mora sweating before he takes over. We have nothing to lose, and if we play even .500 football we can silence a lot of critics. Is the attitude in the city as positive as mine, and even more importantly in Rams park?
Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: Haslett brings some fresh air, as Joe Vitt did when he stepped in for Mad Mike. But the reality is bleak with the near-term schedule.
Darrell Ippensen: With Duncan signed for another year and the Cardinals needing a cheap starting pitcher in case carpenter is done, any chance Jeff weaver could be given another chance at St. Louis. I think he was creleased and set out most of last season so he aught to be hungry and ready to listen to Dunc for another chance to redeem his career.
Jeff Gordon: I'd give him a tryout, just to see what is going on there.
Darrell Ippensen: Has Joe Klopenstein's blocking abilities improved any or will the Redskins blitz everytime he lines up at TE ?
Jeff Gordon: I'm skeptical. We'll see.
Andrew: Gordo!! Thanks for taking my question (s)..
First off, what a GREAT weekend for baseball!! Go Dodgers!
I can't say I feel sorry for the scrubs and their fans one bit, I've heard alllll year how they were gonna win the WS. Anyway, on to the questions. What are the chances that we go after Renteria? What would it cost us? I bet it wouldn't be that expensive and probably only a couple year deal.. Would you agree that if he can mash NL pitching like he has his whole career that he could be a solid fit? Also, I think we have GOT to start drafting middle infielders.. i'm not impressed with a one of them in the minors.. I think our focus should be on pitching and MI in next years draft.
Say we don't go after Renteria.. Who do you think Mo is gonna be realistically looking at?
One more thing (sorry) Who do you see going to the WS? Winning?
Jeff Gordon: I'd like to see Edgar, knowing what the cost of Furcal or Cabrera would be.
I agree with the other points, too.
steve: Would the Cardinals be wise to trade Colby Rasmus or Rick Ankiel for a solid middle infielder or pitcher?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, if you can get all-star caliber player in either spot.
spiritofstlouis: Good afternoon. It has been my contention that the Cardinals make a move for Matt Holliday, using Ludwick as a chip. I feel that the best protection for #5 is a contact hitter, and, despite his home/away splits, Holliday is that guy. I don't believe that the FO will pony up for a top notch FA, so getting Holliday, and extending his contract, will give the Cardinals a solid piece for several years to come. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Hmmm . . . keeping Holliday would cost plenty. This team has lots of outfielders that won't cost so much. I'd rather see the money spent on middle infield and pitching.
cards27: I believe Joe Strauss said or implied that Rasmus may be involved in a trade for Matt Holliday... What are your feelings on this? Does it have any truth? To me it doesn't make much sense; Rasmus is younger, cheaper, and Holliday outside of Coors Field is not nearly as impressive as inside it. What's the upside for the cards in such a trade, and who would likely be involved? Thanks for your time!
Jeff Gordon: I agree with you. Not that Rasmus is a hall of famer, but he could be a 20-homer, 20-steal, 85 RBI guy in short order. Holliday is a stud, but if it means Glaus leaves in a year or the team takes a shortcut at shortstop . . . then I'm not interested.
Todd from Michigan: Gordo was wondering what is your favorite team and who you are rooting for if your job was not with the Dispatch? Thank you for chat.
Jeff Gordon: I don't really have one now, but as an old Mizzou guy, It does my heart good to see them competitive in football again.
Todd from Michigan: Jeff thank you for time. I was wondering if the Rams will be dumping some salary at the deadline. Do you think its possible that Marc Bulger, Chavous or Leonard Little will be moved for some younger plaers or draft picks. Thank you and great job as always.
Jeff Gordon: Why would the Rams dump salary? The payback, in terms of picks, is usually minimal. This team needs to play football again and go from there.
Ryan: Hey Gordo,
So everyone is picking the Blue to finish in the bottom three of the league. Most are putting them just barely ahead of Toronto and Atlanta. Some power rankings I've seen (Yahoo sports for instance) have them 30th! I'm a realist, and I know the Blues probably won't be in the playoffs this year, but there is no way I see them finishing that low in the league. I don't even see them finishing dead last in the division (I think Nashville will take the bottom from the Blues b/c they have no proven goaltending). I see them in the hight teens, low 20s. Nashville, NYI, Toronto, Atlanta, L.A., Vancouver, Columbus, Colorado (no goaltending), Tampa Bay and Florida will all struggle as much as the Blues (if not more so) this season.
Do you agree, Gordo? Where do you rank the Blues going into the season?
Jeff Gordon: I think you're a bit optimistic, given the loss of Johnson. I see several teams as being worse, especially LA, Toronto and the the Thrashers and Islanders.
Curt: Gordo,
Now that Linehan is gone, does FOSL Corey Chavous get scrutinized?
Will Haslett stay with the young guys on the D-line?
Your thoughts on moving Witherspoon to WLB, Culberson to MLB and Tinoisamoa to SLB?
Jeff Gordon: Haven't seen Culberson do enough to merit that promotion. I'd like to see Johnson over Chavous. And Haslett will stay with the kids on the line, yes.
Paul: The NHL has made some interesting tweaks to a couple of rules reguarding faceoff positioning and tv timeouts.
A shot that deflects off the post and flies out of play now results in a faceoff inside the zone instead of just outside the blueline.
After a penalty is called the faceoff is in your defensive zone.
After the puck is iced the offending team can't change lines and there will be NO tv timeouts after an icing call this year.
What's your take on how this will affect the game and do you know of any other changes that I haven't?
PS I heard you and your buddy on the radio last week saying the blues season is going to be rough and mizzou is the only bright spot. I'm happy for mizzou and all but it's not like we're going to be the rams or anything. Heck, most games that we lose are usually at least entertaining. I'll think we'll see some good hockey.
Jeff Gordon:
Jeff V. is harder on the Note than I am. I see them on the high side of .500. I like the no timeout after an icing rule, because tired teams won't get away with icing the puck to get off the ice.
Gary Nguyen: Jeff,
What do you think of drafting a High Caliber, Probowl potential Center in Alex Mack of Cal for 2009 being the #1 Pick Overall? I think it helps to have a smart, dominant center for 2009 since this Offensive Line is too offensive in protecting the Quarterback and opening no holes for Steven Jackson to run.
Jeff Gordon: I'd go for a tackle, regardless. It's harder to find OTs.
Gabe: I went to Blues Fanfest as well as one preseason game (the beatdown on Atlanta), and in my opinion David Perron was the best player on the ice by far. Who impressed you most at camp, and do you think their will be any surprises (busts, or breakouts) on the Blues roster next season?
Jeff Gordon: Perron is a remarkable talent. But Kariya, McDonald and Stempniak all look rejuvenated. And Berglund is a load.
KY_CUB_KILLER: How likely would a trade with Baltimore to receive Brian Roberts and George Sherill be? Who would have to be involved? Rasmus?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, such a deal could happen. And they would want Rasmus, Anderson, so on and so forth.
KY_CUB_KILLER: How can the Cardinals upgrade via trade? Who are likely to be coming to STL via trade?
Jeff Gordon: The possibilities for pitching trades are endless, really. Think in terms of a mid-level OF for a mid-level insurance guy for the rotation.
CTRamsFan: Gordo,
What changes to the offense, if any, do you see Haslett or Saunders making?
Any changes to the defense including personel coming?
Jeff Gordon: Look for an offensive emphasis on Jackson, Jackson and more Jackson. Otherwise, look for kids to get every chance to progress.
BB-Austin, TX: Who will be the first defensemen and forward called up from the "p" this year?
Do you think Wagner is over his head playing right now in the NHL? I'm worried!
Jeff Gordon: Wagner was one of their best D last year before he went down. So I'm not worried.
As for the other D, it's hard to pick between all the depth guys the team signed. As for the Rivermen, I believe Linglet took a step in camp and is better physical shape.
thejager: Hey there sir!
I was curious if you could shed some light to some of the other teams the Cardinals have good trade relations with and/or any teams that are perpetually difficult to trade with. I really like the idea of making a deal with SD for K. Greene or possibly a deal with the O's to get Roberts and/or Sherrill, but i just don't know how our realtions are with them. Thanks again!
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak is still forging those relationships -- but he has players that other teams want. He won't have trouble.
Rambunctious: Hi Jeff,
Now that Haz is head coach, I can't help but wonder about his relationship with Al Saunders. Not only on a personal level, but also conceptually. I don't pretend to know much about Jim's offensive predilections, however he did not hire Al as his OC. Do they have a healthy relationship predicated on mutual respect? Or do you believe Haslett has other inclinations as far as the offense is concerned. Thanks in advance!!
Jeff Gordon: We'll see . . . I know Haslett wants to play more smashmouth, but Al has done that in his day, too.
Tshow: The current Rams organization is the laughing stock of the NFL after the way they fired Linehan and the teams anemic play. Chip must sell this team, what is the latest? There has to be some rumors floating around. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Actually, the Lions and Raiders are probably worst laughingstocks. Chip has to sell or retool his management team. We'll just have to see which way he goes.
rg prater: Gordo,
All the talk around here about the offseason has focused on the redbirds intentions regarding free agents (and trades). I'm wondering if the brewers and now the cubs (after their latest debacle) intend to be big players in the free agent market?
Jeff Gordon: Look for the Brewers to retool, in a big way. If Cuban gets the Cubs, look out!
FredDryerFan: Hey Gordo as always thanks for your bits-o-wisdom!
Let’s talk blocking and blitz pick-ups. Mainly SJ’s inability to do either. I consider it a travesty that a Top 5 back isn’t sharp enough to identify then pursue an attacker in his own backfield. Early in his career we recognized he was a liability but had Marshal and other guys protecting Bulger, so we left SJ on the sideline during passing situations (like when we’re behind). Martz knew this and caught heat for it, but now it seems that because the coaching staff is afraid to hurt SJ’s ego that he has to be in on EVERYPLAY. Is anything new being done to improve his blocking? Maybe throw him into 1 on 1 drills with the DL or Linebackers? Does his ability to scan and identify blitz or stunts begin and end on a chalk board, when it should be emphasized on the field?
Thanks,
D in L.A.
Jeff Gordon: I agree -- if it takes 10 hours a week of extra practice, he must learn how to pass block.
rich: Jeff: Does MLB realize just how horrible they're scheduling of the NL and ALDS series on T.V. is?
I mean last Wed. it took me awhile to figure out exactly what station the games were on. And because only 1 network is broadcasting the DS not all 8 teams get to play on the same day. It's a joke really!!!!! TB doesn't play until Thursday and then not again until Sat.? I realize the playoffs the Sox had to play in had something to do with but still....comment?
thanks
Rich
Jeff Gordon: Couldn't agree more.
Walt Glaeser: Hey Jeff... I know preseason means nada, but should we take hope that the Blues are actually scoring goals, especially PPGs, in quantity this preseason? Or is it the kind of false hope in which Cubs fans routinely engage?
Thanks!
Walt
Jeff Gordon: This team will be better and it will more fun to watch. Playoffs . . . can't promise that.
Todd W.: Hi Gordo,
Please tell me that Avery is starting the rest of the year?
No more Dante Hall, when can he be released?
Next 3 weeks are gonna be very hard on the Rams.
Thanks
Todd W.
Jeff Gordon: Avery will start the rest of the year, unless Burton beats him out. Look for Stanley to get a bigger role too.
Cards4520: Considering how Mizzou's defense is constantly on the field, do you think the numbers against them are skewed? Are they better than the numbers say?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, the numbers are skewed. But open receivers are open receivers -- and they were open early, before anybody got tired.
CORRY ELLIOTT: HAVE YOU HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT CHRIS CARPENTER, AND WHY ARE WE WAITING TO SEE IF HE IS GOING TO BE HEALTHY OR NOT I SAY TRADE ONE OR TWO OF OUR OUTFIELDERS FOR A NUMBER 1 OR 2 STARTER,AND HAVE CHRIS CARPENTER AT THE END OF THE ROTATION?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will get more aggressive looking for a real starting candidate in January, if it becomes clear that Chris is iffy.
Chris Hagen: Hey Gordo,
The blues have played well this preseason, rolling out three lines that can score for the first time in a while. McDonald and Stempniak are lighting it up! Do you see a rebound for these two this season? Will Kariya bounce back? What about the development of Perron and Backes? Is there ANY chance of a post-season for the Note?
Jeff Gordon: Playoffs are a long shot, but look for much more scoring.
MonkeyLooker: How about Tory Holt for KC's Tony Gonzalez straight up - we have 2 good young rookie wide receivers in Avery & Burton so lets get a great TE. Do you think Bulger will last the season as our starter? I cringe every time I watch London Fletcher making tackles for other teams - incredibly bad mistake not resigning the best MLB we have ever had. Go Rams!
Jeff Gordon: I would assume KC wants Gonzalez to finish his career there, if he is up to it. The Rams do need a TE now, but they need a lead WR more.
Rambunctious: Jeff, do you know why Fakir Brown was released? If I am not mistaken, Fakir was one of Haslett's "guys." Linehan apparently was the one who cut him. Why? I believed Fakir to be our best corner(I am sure there are many who don't agree with that). Brown seemed to play opposing receivers tight, too tight in more than a few cases, and was flagged for it. I personally liked the fact that he was a physical corner. At least he usually made opposing receivers fight for the reception. There has been talk of bringing him back, any news on whether he is willing to return, or does he want to break the bank?
Jeff Gordon: Linehan whacked him to prove he is in charge. It did not work out so well for him.
Mike: Gordo,
How many points do you see Patrik Berglund putting up this year? TJ Oshie?
Will Brad Boyes prove that last year wasn't a fluke and net 40 more this year?
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Patrick should get 40 to 55 points, Oshie 35 to 45. Both could be big surprises for the rest of the NHL.
Justin: Maybe the Rams need to take a trip to Columbia, MO to get some inspiration from a top-level program!
Jeff Gordon: Maybe the could pick up a new offensive play or two as well.
Jeff: The starters for Mizzou are primarilly juniors and seniors this season, which is a bit scary for next year. With the exception of a major injury, do you see any underclassman rising up and replacing a starter as the season goes along.
Jeff Gordon: You have to trust the recruiting process, which has gone well. Gabbert is getting a taste this year, but he would be the biggest concern. Great tools, lot to learn. But are good WRs and RBs.
Bill Motchan: Could the Tigers (Mizzou, not the Detroit baseball team) beat the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: With that spread offense? Probably not. The Rams front seven would be too much.
Bill: Hey Jeff, those NHL games that opened up the season in Europe. I take it they had to play those games in the bigger European sized rinks right? Is that not a big deal to adjust to, or is it? thanks
Jeff Gordon: I watched a bit of that and the rinks looked the same . . . but maybe I was just not paying close attention.
Mike Atkinson: With Dunc and Tony on the same contract schedule now, do you see this as their last year or will they consider a new contract?
Jeff Gordon: They could come back, again, if the new Cards approach leads them back into the playoffs. If the direction doesn't, they could move on to the next challenge.
jbirds21: Is it possible we are goin to see Derek Stanley returning kicks now? Replacing the cement filled shoes of Dante Hall?
Jeff Gordon: Yes.
Griff21: Hey Gordo
With all the talk of more offense up the middle, which I agree to an extent, you can't throw away defense in those positions. Before the season when we signed Izturis(still cant spell his name) I thought that kind of money could be better spent. He did surprise me thru the season with his speed and (usually ) solid defense. are REnteria, Furcal, or the other options still solid defensively? are they Izturis-good?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will likely take a small step back defensively, but they will get more than 20 RBI from that position.
Griff21: observation/comment... even if Fuentes is a lefty, TLR still would need another lefty or 2 in the bullpen. He would solve the closer problem( for an outrageously high price ) but we still need a lefty that can come in during the middle innings.
Jeff Gordon: True, but to have a closer-caliber lefty would be huge. HUGE!
Tim: I watch ESPN and hear all the hype about Alabamas offensive line being the best in the country. I try not to be so bias towards Mizzou, but how about their offensive line? Also, do you see Derrick Washington becoming a premiere tailback in the future?
Jeff Gordon: Tough to compare, because spread blocking is different from SEC power blocking. As for Washington, I love him. A big-time back!
IsDurbanodoingtime: Given the private equity money behind Dave Checketts, have you heard any problems on the horizon for Checketts and the Blues?
Jeff Gordon: Well, the Blues better sell some more tickets.
Tim: Gordo:
What a great Saturday night...Tigers winning big and Cubs Gone. (The remote was getting a workout) I thought our defense played their best game. The D line played tough and our linebacker play was excellent. Overall giving up just 10 points is remarkable.
I wish Chase would have taken the high road during his post game statement.
Next week will be a good test... Tigers 57..OKS 35
Love our running game.
Regards
Jeff Gordon: Running game is much better with a bigger back.
jackhoff: As a card fan living in chicago im loving the way the cubs ended the season, and disappointed the cards couldnt be there instead. what do you see as the biggest reason the cubs flopped and what lesson should the cards get from that big playoff collapse.
Jeff Gordon: The Cubs pitching went south and a key guy (Soriano) didn't hit at all. The team was a little young in the pen as well. Winning playoff baseball starts on the mound.
jbirds21: It was funny to hear LaRussa among other say, obviously we dont have much organizational depth.. To me, we didnt even call up some of our best prospects.. As far as i see it, Mather went down.. After playing a pretty nice role for us.. We didnt see Freese or Rasmus.. Even John Jay was doin pretty well in his short time in AAA.. Also when Yad went down, where was Bryan Anderson.. Boggs, Todd etc.. I know they dont want to start their clock, but dont complain how we dont have any depth, when u dont promote your top guys!
Jeff Gordon: Agreed. Freese and Rasmus are big-time talents. Wallace will be in the big leagues next year. Todd was the best hurler in the minors. These guys are all on deck now.
Griff21: I know its preseason but the blues look awesome!!
players ranking as league leaders in goals, points , assists... PP @ 26 % can you even remember the last time that happened?! SKILLED players up and down the line up.
Jeff Gordon: So far, so good. Lots of skill, good speed, lots of potential.
jwein23: From one knowledgeable hockey fan to another, Gordo: I've seen the experts' predictions. And perhaps I'm a homer and I'm longing for a competitive product to return to the ice. But with three legitimate scoring lines (barring injury, of course) and an NHL-ready backup goalie, am I wrong to think that the Blues could at least challenge for one of the last couple playoff spots in the West?
Jeff Gordon: Challenge, sure. It could happen.
matthew: Bryan Anderson, Skip Schumaker, Brendan Ryan to KC for Mike Aviles and minor league pitching.
Troy Glaus, Mitchell Boggs to MIL for J. J. Hardy.
We have outfielders to replace Schumaker; we have Freeese (and ulitmately Craig / Wallace) to replace Glaus. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: I like the idea of keeping Glaus and just signing, say, Renteria.
pattonj68: Gordo,
Do you think Linehan will resurface next year with a coordinator position? If so, how could it be justified with the poor offensive the Rams had under him?
Jeff Gordon: Position coach, maybe. Or a college coordinator.
Joe S: Do you think the Cardinals have enough to lure Texas into trading Young & Kinsler? It looks like they may be rebuilding and could use starting pitching, catching and one outfielder. (Rasmus, Anderson, Boggs, Ryan?)
What do you think it would take? This to me would be worth trading some prospects.
Jeff Gordon: That's a big package -- I'm guessing the Rangers would want Wainwright.
Scott T.: Regarding the Rams: At least we're not the Oakland Raiders. If Jay Zygmunt owned the Rams THEN we'd be the Raiders. Gordo, can the NFL legally remove sue-happy "Weird" Al Davis from running that team? And what coach in their right mind will take that job? Maybe Art Shell??
Jeff Gordon: Can Oakland condemn the franchise and seize control? That might be the way to go.
Chris: Gordo,
I'm wondering that if the Rams turn it around would it show they tanked on Linehan or that Hasslet is that good since (so far) the roster is pretty much the same? Either way I guessing next years roster will be very different. And lastly, do you see Brown coming back and if so would he play corner or maybe move to one of the safety positions?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have tried to bring back Brown, but he is in position to command good money from teams looking for a fill-in CB. He would start here.
Dave: I am concerned about whather the Rams will stay in St. Louis. I have went to games and followed them for 12 years. Obviously, I have an emotional investment. What do you know about the Rams chances of staying in StL and what will it take for them to show that there is a commitment to stay? Will they stay?
Jeff Gordon: The next owner of the Rams will make that decision. The sale of the team is something Rams fans need to sweat.
Griff21: To anyone out there who still follows the rams heres a quick note... they suck!, they won't get any better, they have the same players who always lose. can we say 0-16? the only sport to watch right now is hockey! come along brothers and join the Blues. Do you bleed blue?
ok by the way we are going to the home opener, what kind of festivities are planned?
Jeff Gordon: Not sure what all is planned, but it will be fun night. Hockey Guy will be there, blogging live.
Petey123: What did the Rams see in Linehan to hire him as head coach? He'll never get another head coaching position in the NFL. The guy has absolutely no leadership skills.
Jeff Gordon: That became apparent.
warreng2k1: What's your prediction for the BCS title game?
I think LSU will win the SEC with one loss to Florida, Georgia, or Alabama and then meet the Big XII champ(which I hope is Mizzou),which will have one loss to a Big XII South team.
Of course in a perfect world, my Vanderbilt Commodores will find a way to win the SEC East. But if they have taught me anything, it's to be cautiously optimistic. But at least we are not the Cubs.
Jeff Gordon: LSU-Oklahoma. Sorry TigerFans . . .
Maclin4heisman: Pretty simple question; how much is Mizzou's secondary going to be exposed againts OSU? Willie Mo is back and we looked better against Nebraska, but I'm still wary.
Jeff Gordon: This will be a test. I did like the pass pressure and rush defense against NU. That is a start.
pattonj68: Gordo, do you think certain players are destined to be injured? Erik Johnson being one of them. Do you see him being healthy for a productive NHL career, or an injury prone player?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see him as injury-prone. That was an unfortunate off-ice accident.
Jeepster: Jeff: I read today that the Cubs post season interests are now C.C. Sabathia and Dave Roberts (again). I don't expect Dewitt to pursue Sabathia but wouldn't Roberts make a ton of sense for the Cardnals?
Jeff Gordon: You mean Brian Roberts. Yes that would make sense.
Superjim: Hi Gordo,
An unconventional thought...how about Jonathan Wade to return kicks? he's done zip for the d, so why not use his speed on returns?
I learnt the rules of the NFL via computer games because it's not well publicised in the UK (or at least 5 years ago it wasn't). So there are some rules I don't understand, was wondering if you can help me. Why when the QB spikes the ball is it not 'intentional grounding'? Why does he not need to be touched by a defender when he takes a knee?
Thanks Gordo, from a cold and wet London
Jeff Gordon: The latter two rules are a convenience to the offense, one to stop the clock efficiently and the other to run out the clock. As fpr Wade. first he has to show more enthusiasm about kick coverage. Not exactly Spartacus.
pattonj68: Gordo
Do you see the Cards getting anything for Adam Kennedy? I assume they will end up trading him since he requested it. How do you see this bad signing working itself out?
Jeff Gordon: Maybe the Cards deal, but they don't get much.
Superjim: Hi Gordo,
Let me ask, why do teams trade players for 7th round picks? We got Donnie Jones from Miami for a 7th rounder, he's produced a lot for us and I'm sure the Dolphins spent that pick on a player who's no longer on their roster. Where's the logic? The same applies for the 5th rounder we spent on Dante Hall. Other than Cliff Ryan we haven't drafted a success in the 5th round for years, so we get a proven player in exchange for a probable flop (in our hands at keast).
Make any sense Gordo???
Jeff Gordon: I agree totally. Why bother making those deal.
Paul: Just a response to a previous question.
The nhl season opening games in sweden and prague were played on an nhl sized rink with nhl rules the same as if they were here. (nhl perhaps testing a future market? hmmm...)
The exhibition games against foreign teams that were played days before the openers looked like they were on International sized rinks but with nhl rules. It was very interesting to see because the hitting was way way down (too easy to throw yourself out of position) and everyone was skating their butts off. reminded me a little bit of a wide open outdoor soccer game but with more offense.
Jeff Gordon: Thanks. And I do believe the NHL will expand to Europe some day to compete with the KHL.
PA: Gordo,
Have you heard anything about the Blues potentially looking to sign a Berard or trying to get another puck mover with exp.? Or are they leaning toward keeping Petro the season and just let him develop?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: They were leaning that way, but I agree about Berard.
KY_CUB_KILLER: What percentage would you give Lopez's return? I think 85% (100% if contract is under 4 million)
Jeff Gordon: Agreed.
David: What are you hearing regards a timetable as to when a decision will be made on if the Rams are sold or kept in St. Louie.?
Jeff Gordon: No timetable, really. Depends on the offers.
Tim: I know the defense played well Saturday against Nebraska. However, they still gave up 290 yards passing to an average group of receivers. Do you see the problems on defense coming from a lack of talent, coaching, or execution?
Jeff Gordon: Execution. There is talent on the D. Get more pressure, get QBs on the move, force some mistakes.
Jeff: Jeff,
Do you think Ryan Ludwick is the real deal? In other words, do you suspect he will continue to put up the numbers he did this year (30+ homes, 100+ RBIs)?
Thanks,
jeff from atlanta
Jeff Gordon: I look at 25 homers, 90 RBI as realistic for him.
KY_CUB_KILLER: Which FA is more likely to be in a Cardinal uniform? Furcal, Hudson, Lowe, Fuentes, or Ohman?
Jeff Gordon: In that group, aim low -- Ohman.
Joe Driskill: Do you think the Mizzou defense is up to containing high-powered offenses in the Big 12 like Oklahoma and Texas? I don't think there is much question our offense can keep up with any other team in the country, but you have to wonder whether they will have to score 40-50 points to contend with other high-powered offenses.
Jeff Gordon: The D needs to get timely stops and a few turnovers. It doesn't need to control the other side, for obvious reasons. This week will be an indicator.
Nick: Gordo,
Do the Blues have enough scoring to make the playoffs this year? If not, do you see them making a mid-season trade to get us there?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see a big midseason deal that costs a high pick or prospect. The Blues will stay the course and hang in the race.
Stallion: Off the top of your head, and on the spur of the moment, give us one FA name the Rams, Blues and Cardinals cannot do without?
Jeff Gordon: Fuentes is the guy who could really make a difference for the Cards. The Rams will need everything. As for the Blues, they aren't looking at FAs at all.
Walt Glaeser: Jeff,
If Chase Daniels wins the Heisman Trophy, what will that do to his NFL prospects? All I read is that he's too small. Will he draft regardless of the Heisman, or does he have a backup job lined up? Do you see him as a backup QB for a while? All I can do is compare him to Doug Flutie. Is there still a Canadian Football League?? LOL
Walt
Jeff Gordon: The Heisman has no pull with the NFL. Chase will have to prove he can drop back from center and make plays. His workouts will be interesting. To me, he is at least a back-up in the NFL.
Brendan: Your boy Cutler is finally what you predicted him to be a couple of years ago.
Congrats!
Jeff Gordon: Too bad he's not a Ram!
Cary Schneider: Are the Cards considering a deal for Jake Peavy that would include Rasmus and other prospects?
Jeff Gordon: If they could do that without involving Wainwright, great. But that is a lot of money over the long haul . . .
KY_CUB_KILLER: Any inside info on the Russ Springer situation? What are your predictions?
Jeff Gordon: Love to see him back, but his family is down south for good.
pattonj68: Gordo, with the organization in shambles, do you think the Rams fans would be that upset if they move? Or is bad football better than no football?
Jeff Gordon: Bad football is better than no football, yes.
dch60: Woe is me, with Dave Duncan signed again, we're stuck with Chris. Isn't that a roster sport better served with anyone else?
Jeff Gordon: Chris is hardly guaranteed a spot on the team, especially coming off the surgery.
Tackleberry: Why does the "impact" bat have to come from 2B/SS position? That limits teh Cards search to very, very few players. I'd rather see modest moves (i.e. cement miles and his .305 average at 2nd) and go after a legit hitter. Ankiel and Ludwick had great numbers, but were ghosts in the clutch.
Jeff Gordon: It's possible that a Holliday could come here, but the first step is to get more than 20 RBI from the shortstop. And runs from second as well. Those are the biggest holes.
bpworgo: Love your chats.Keeps me up to date, even though I'm in big CO.Saw that there is some interest by the Cards for Holliday?I sure hope so!I've been watching this guy for two years and he is worth whatever the Cards give up to get him.I know what the perception is,of anyones offensive numbers in Colorado. But this guy can flat out hit.Not only for average, but for power too.He can also steal a few bases for geing a big man.His defense is not Gold Glove, but it is above average.I think the most important thing about him though,is the fact that he has a hunger to win and excell. After seing Albert in the Lou for all those years(before I relocated).Holliday has the same kind of drive and desire as El Hombre. This guy wants to win in the worst way, after being with the Rockies all these years and losing. And if Alberts elbow ever does blow out, Holliday could replace him untill he recovers.Imagine;Schu-Ankiel-Pujols-Holiday-Glaus-Ludwick-Molina-P-SS) B in Denver (Go Bluse!)
Jeff Gordon: Cards fans love the guy, but he was merely good outside of Coors.
John: Hi Jeff,
What can you tell us about the games that the NFL scheduled for the Rams this season? I thought weaker teams were to receive a somewhat easier schedule, but so far the Rams have faced almost all first-tier teams. Do you know the strength of schedule for the Patriots, for example, as compared to the Rams?
Thanks, as always, for your time.
John
Jeff Gordon: The NFL switch to more divisions changed that. The schedule rotation stuck the Rams with games against two rugged divisions.
That's it for the questions today -- got 'em all!
See you next week.
